Full textIn May 2012 a misleading decision of the Landgericht (Court of Appeal) Cologne declared that male circumcision in children amounts to be a criminal offence, even if performed lege artis and with the consent of the parents. The article pays attention to the new legislation of December 2012 introduced into the BGB as a legal framework of male circumcision with regard to the right of freedom of religion and the parental rights in education especially for Jewish and Muslims in Germany.

Full textCircumcision is probably the oldest enigma in the history of surgery. It has been performed at least since Antiquity – maybe since prehistoric times – for cultural and religious reasons. More than a century ago, especially in the English-speaking world, it had become a medicalised surgical intervention. Circumcision was at once trivialised and emptied out from its symbolical signification, and ascribed with a thousand hygienic and prophylactic properties that changed along with medical fads and fashions. Today, about a fifth of the male population is circumcised worldwide. What are the ethical stakes of circumcision when pitted against the principle of human bodily integrity? Can it satisfy universal ethical principles?

Full textIt isgenerally accepted that the circumcision ceremonial as initiation trial implies (and) dictates a change in status that is not with out implications and consequences for the psyche of the neophyte. In what manner does this beginning of integration of change affect the algerian child, knowing that circumcision has the status of a cultural practice having socially "positive" consequences. By relying on these values which constitute the fondations of the psychic work of integration, the algerian child confronts and stands up to circumcision in its dimension of painful trial

Full textThe circumcision, in berber background, corresponds to unchanged social and traditional practices usually admitted in algeria and which are still operative today. At issue in a historical, ethnological, and psychological examination that we want, we hope to situat the traditional circumcision in algeria as a necessary and fundamental sign by which a young boy identifies himself with the masculine community and his membershipe with that group. On the psychological level, the circumcision has lived as a narcissisti validation, and an affirmation of virility. The circumcision, is an inherent attribute in the masculine adult clan, realizing not only the sexual identity of a young boy but by this aspect of a rite of passage, this act, at the same time, promotes his superior social position. Througthout our research paper, we have analysed in detail the phenomenon of circumcision in the algerian traditional berber society which we have considered from three interdependent perspectives. In a more detailed manner we have studied in the first part of this research the origins and significance of circumcision on religious, ethnological and psychological levels. In the second part we have concentrated on the different aspects of circumcision in algeria. Based on evidence from some specific cases of field-work investigation we studied, in the last part, its purely clinical aspects

Full textIn the beginning there is circumcision of the beginning (Dissemination). The scar comes in the place of that which is stolen (Marges) — the foreskin (Circumfession), body (La Parole Soufflée), language (Monolingualism of the other, Rams, Shibboleth) —, gives itself as the very place where the operation of the cut lives and as the place of the thief (god, mother, theologic program) who carries out such an operation. The effects of a past which has taken place without taking place, which does not pass et which is « instantaneously » called by the imminence of the death of the other (that of the mother in Circumfession), come back to the mark that the « I « without » I » (Parages) carries since before he knows that he carries it. Our thesis concentrates on these effects which cut the I — at the letter of its body — off from all destination, all predictable future, and that way constitute the I as ethics, through the questions of guilt, of forgiveness, of conversion« and » of writing

Full textSexual mutilations are still a question with us. They are growing among children everywhere in the world and particularly in Europ and France. Haw can you penalize minor's circumcision and excision? And is this penal treatment necessary and sufficient? According to the french right, such acts are considered to undermine children's physical integrity. Despite many laws protecting persons, some don't even want to hear about this problem. The human rights' declaration and the child rights' declaration are clear: noone is allowed to hurt children. Sexual mutilations have to be penalized. But as it is easy to demonstrate excision's damages, circumcision doesn't summon up all the french opinion. Therefore, this book proposes good alternatives to sexual mutilations by an adapted criminal policy and social efficient predispositions. Could penalties of more than five day's imprisonnement change parent's behaviour? May be medical acts could bound the damages of some traditional pratices. Bu in fact. The best solutions is to symbolize these mutilations in order to have them abolished

Full textThree randomized controlled trials showed the protective role of circumcision in heterosexual HIV transmission. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Joint United Nations Program on AIDS (UNAIDS) recommend that voluntary male medical circumcision (VMMC) programs should be rolled-out wherever there is a generalized HIV epidemic and few men are circumcised. WHO recommends a prevalence rate of at least 80% male circumcision in adults to have a substantial impact on the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Eastern and Southern Africa. Starting in 2007 in the fourteen Southern and Eastern Africa countries identified as priority countries, the programs to promote the CVME have allowed a rapid increase of the male circumcision prevalence rate. So very low in 2008, it rose to about 50% in 2011. This study showed that the male circumcision prevalence has remained almost stable among adults in the township of Orange Farm since 2011. Township where a similar promotion program to other Southern and Eastern African countries is underway since 2007. We then designed and tested an innovative strategy combining the existing strategy with the elements of interpersonal communication with a financial compensation and discussions with all members of the household. This new strategy tested showed that a male circumcision prevalence rate of 80% could be obtained in a very short time. This easily reproducible method should be encouraged in order to increase the male circumcision prevalence rate to 80% as recommended by WHO in severely HIV affected countries, and thus to decrease HIV incidence

Full textWritten at the beginning of the XIIIth c. To channel the intemperance of the Feast of Fools, the Office of the Circumcision from Sens (F-SEm 46) is very similar to others offices of the Circumcision written for the cathedral of Beauvais, particularly the one contained in the manuscript GB-Lbl Egerton 2615. However, the office of Sens remains rooted in the liturgy of this city. We can divide the repertoire into two groups: the usual chants of the antiphons and responsories, and one composed by the tropes and the conducti added to embellish the office and the mass. The first category is found overall in the other manuscripts of the cathedral of Sens, at times with adaptations, but the tropes and conductus are mainly those written in the offices from Beauvais, most of them already present in the manuscript from Norman Sicily E-Mn 289 (c. 1140). One may also notice that a Latin rondeau and a conductus are also copied in the manuscript I-Fl Plut. 29. 1 from the Parisian cathedral. Nevertheless, the scribe of F-SEm 46 tried to introduce to the office of Sens some melodies particularly appreciated in this cathedral: long melismas and a prosula only noted in the manuscripts from Sens. The office of the Circumcision from Sens combines the influences from Sens and Normandy/Picardie. Although the copy of the manuscript was initiated by Pierre of Corbeil, previously canon of the cathedral of Paris, the Parisian repertoire, still in full expansion at the beginning of the XIIIth century, is under-represented in the office of Sens

Full textAlthough the annual number of new HIV infections has been decreasing since the middle of the 1990s’, it remains high, and particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. Epicentre, in collaboration with “Médecins Sans Frontières”, is planning a strategy to reduce HIV incidence in several areas of high prevalence and incidence rates, such as Ndhiwa sub-county (Nyanza Province, Kenya). In this sub-county, the adult HIV prevalence was estimated at 24% in 2012 (Ndhiwa HIV Impact in Population Survey, NHIPS, 2012). In the first part of this thesis, various aspects of HIV infection as well as current issues are given. In the second part, our objective is to estimate HIV incidence in Ndhiwa sub-county using several distinct approaches. In the last part, we focus on the mathematical modeling of the spread of the HIV infection to the short term. Firstly, we develop a framework for using the same data for estimation and prediction. Secondly, the potential impacts of multiple interventions on HIV incidence in Ndhiwa sub-county are studied using our framework and performing deterministic and stochastic simulations

Full textCircumcision is an almost universal practice, in so much as it is at work in a considerable number of countries: in the Arab world, Israël, the United States, etc. Nevertheless, it acquires a specific character in Black Africa, where it occupies the function of a true rite of passage. As such, it constitutes a practice which puts to the forefront notions of social integration and masculine identity. Today, the confrontation of cultures results in the “deritualising” of circumcision. This operation is thus “juvenilised” and “medicalised”, in other words practised more particularly on young children and in hospitals. In this work, we attempt to understand this transition from a “traditional” to a more “westernised” conception by comparing the representations of subjects living in a country where this practice constitutes the norm and those of expatriates in a country where the dominant discourse rejects that norm. It is a question of studying the effect of the confrontation of two conceptions concerning the social representation of an object with a strong value in terms of identity. In order to operationalise this situation of confrontation, we addressed Gabonese subjects living in France, whom we compared to other Gabonese subjects living in Gabon. In practical terms, semi-directive interviews were carried out with forty Nzebi students whose academic levels ranged from bachelor’s degree to doctorate. The results presented are on two different levels of analysis: the first one, which is explored by means of syntagmatic and phrastic analysis, gives access to the attitude and the anchorage of the subject in relation to the object. The second level, which is explored by means of propositional analysis and ALCESTE software, gives access to the field of representation

Full textThe process of evangelization undertaken by the missionaries faced various onstacles. Indeed the kotas known as the natives opposed to the infiltration of western religion showed a lack of interest in their attempts asserting their way of life and habits such as polygamy. For the Kotas, the most important remained the relevance of their traditional rites such as "Mongala" and "Ngoye" associated with circumcision that represented an essential aspect of their social life but considered by the missionaries as fetishistic practices. Actually and beyond its initiatory function consisting in introducing young men (teenagers) to the world of the adults, the ceremony of circumcision aimed at bringing forth or carrying on the Kotas identity. Therefore by denying "Mongala" and "Ngoye" the missionaries contributed not only to deeply transform the rites of circumcision, but they also led to alter Kota's thinking

Full textThe theoretical task of the present work consists in the inquiry of the ‘Jewish Question’. This notion, extremely rich in meanings and nuances, can be referred to several issues: from the tragedy of Shoah up to the contemporary conflict between Palestinians and the State of Israel. Nevertheless this work tries to develop it in a specific way: ‘Jewish Question’ is here interpreted as implying the relationship between Judaism and Christianity, and in particular the connection existing between the two figures of the Synagogue and the Ekklesia (the Church). The question that sustains this work can be summarized in this way: how do Christianity and Judaism look like, once they are brought back to the ‘Jewish Question’? That is to say: what does it mean to radically think the Jewish Christian nexus from a philosophical point of view? The working hypothesis consists in reading this nexus starting from the notion of aporia: a constitutive and unsolvable contradiction is at work between the Synagogue and the Ekklesia. If it is true – in fact – that Judaism is the un-avoidable root of Christianity, it seems not less true that Judaism itself embodies a petition, which puts Christianity into question. In other words, Christianity finds in Judaism its own essential condition as well as its necessary ‘enemy’. The nexus between the Synagogue and the Ekklesia is then an aporetical one. At least two implications follow this aporia: 1. The ‘Jewish Question’ is, first of all, a question for Christianity, put into question once it is brought back to its constitutive relation with Judaism; 2. Christianity is detracted from every declination in the nomenclature of identity. In the aporetic space opened by the contradiction of the ‘Jewish Question’, Christianity finds its own constitutive incompleteness and impossibility to fully correspond to itself. This represents a crucial aspect of the ‘Jewish Question’: it is, paradoxically, a question of, as well as a question for, Christianity. The implications of the ‘Jewish Question’ are decisive from the political point of view too. The notions of identity and belonging are, in fact, directly implied in the nexus between the Synagogue and the Ekklesia. With those notions, the concepts of community, justice, the ‘other’ and hospitality are, as well, called into question and re-shaped. The work tries to analyze those political consequences of the Jewish-Christian nexus. The work, finally, is structured around eight key words, through which it tries to bring into light and underline crucial theoretical knots of the ‘Jewish Question’. The words are: TESTAMENTO, ESCLUSIONE, NEMICO, PROFETA, CRISTIANESIMO, CIRCONCISONE, CONVERSIONE and POLITICA MESSIANICA. For each of these words, a different philosopher or theologian has been interrogated.
