Abstract:

Abstract:
Deciphering the climate changes that influenced the glacial fluctuations of the last millennium requires documenting the spatial and temporal patterns of these glacial events. Here, we estimate the change in equilibrium line altitudes (ELAs) between the most prominent glacial advance of the last millennium and the present for four alpine glaciers located in different climatic regimes along the Andes. For each glacier, we reconstruct scenarios of climatic conditions (temperature and precipitation anomalies) that accommodate the observed ELA changes. We focus on the following glaciers: an alpine glacier in the Cordillera Vilcanota (13°S), Tapado glacier (30°S), Cipreses glacier (34°S), and Tranquilo glacier (47°S). Our results show that the range of possible temperature and precipitation anomalies that accommodate the observed ELA changes overlap significantly at three of the four sites (i.e. Vilcanota, Cipreses, and Tranquilo). Only Tapado glacier exhibits a set of climate anomalies that differs from the other three sites. Assuming no change in precipitation, the estimated ELA changes require a cooling of at least 0.7°C in the Cordillera Vilcanota, 1.0°C at Tapado glacier, 0.6°C at Cipreses glacier, and 0.7°C at Tranquilo glacier. Conversely, assuming no change in temperature, the estimated ELA changes are explained by increases in precipitation exceeding 0.52 m yr−1 (64% of the annual precipitation) in the Cordillera Vilcanota, 0.31 m yr−1 (89%) at Tapado glacier, 0.22 m yr−1 (27%) at Cipreses glacier, and 0.3 m yr−1 (27%) at Tranquilo glacier. By mapping the ELA changes and modeling the potential climate forcing across diverse climate settings, we aim to contribute toward documenting the spatial variability of climate conditions during the last millennium, a key step to decipher the mechanisms underlying the glacial fluctuation that occurred during this period.

Abstract: Effects of the CIPRES program on suicidal risk in adolescents. The objective of the study was to evaluate the specific changes generated by the CIPRES program on suicidal risk in adolescents. The sample comprised 106 adolescents aged between 13 and 18 years old (53 in the experimental group, 53 in the control group), of which 54.7% were women (n = 58). The study used a quasi-experimental design of repeated pretest-posttest measures with a control group. Two assessment instruments were administered before and after the program: The Scale of the Suicide Risk (ERS) and the Inventory of Positive and Negative Suicidal Ideation (PANSI). The pretest-posttest ANCOVAs showed that the program significantly reduced (p < .05) the scores of suicidal ideation, planning, self-harm, isolation/social support, lack of family support, and global suicide risk. In addition, it significantly increased positive ideation scores. The results support the relevance of this program to reduce suicidal risk in adolescents. Keywords: CIPRES; suicide risk; adolescents; psychological intervention; quasi-experiment.

Abstract:
Abstract · The Burrowing Parrot (Cyanoliseus patagonus bloxami, Aves: Psittaciformes) colony from Alto Cachapoal, Chile: variations in population size between 1985 and 2015 The endangered endemic subspecies of the Burrowing Parrot from Chile (Cyanoliseus patagonus bloxami) is threatened by hunting, pet trade, and loss of its habitat. Abundant and widely distributed in the past, its population has become fragmented and, by 1985, consisted of only about 3300 birds in Chile. Based on a systematic monitoring we studied population dynamics at the Cachapoal River (O’Higgins region, Central Chile), documenting a population increase from 217 individuals in 1985 to 2979 in 2014–2015. This growth is probably related to the creation of the Rio Cipreses National Reserve, as well as the direct protection of its colonies and a campaign of environmental awareness aimed at the local people.

Abstract:
Abstract An expanded network of moisture-sensitive tree-ring chronologies has been developed for central Chile from long-lived cypress trees in the Andean Cordillera. A regional ring width chronology of cypress sites has been used to develop well-calibrated and verified estimates of June–December precipitation totals for central Chile extending from a.d. 1200 to 2000. These reconstructions are confirmed in part by historical references to drought in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and by nineteenth-century observations on the position of the Río Cipreses glacier. Analyses of the return intervals between droughts in the instrumental and reconstructed precipitation series indicate that the probability of drought has increased dramatically during the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, consistent with selected long instrumental precipitation records and with the general recession of glaciers in the Andean Cordillera. This increased drought risk has occurred along with the growing demand on surface water resources and may heighten socioeconomic sensitivity to climate variability in central Chile.

Three soil samples were collected at the highlands of Cartago (Cipreses, Pacayas and Tierra Blanca) Costa Rica and were placed in individual trays. Then, 50 seeds of tomato variety Hayslip were sown in each tray. After 40 days, plants were inoculated with a Pseudomonas solanacearum. Two weeks after the inoculation, healthy and diseased plants were incorporated and left to decompose for 12 days, in order to allow establishment of the bacteria in the soil. Then, 70 seeds were sown in each tray. After 42 days, plants were inoculated by inundation with a suspension of 103 CFU/ml of P. solanacearum. Surviving plants were taken to the laboratory and desinfected; cuts were made at the base of the stems, then the epidermis was removed and cuts were placed in test tubes containing sterile water for 90 minutes. The Petri dishes were then incubated for 48 hours at 28°C. From the growing bacteria, antagonism on P. solanacearum was evaluated by scratching Pctri dishes with each bacteria over same medium alrealy dcseribcd. Out of 22 bacteria originally obtained, 12 showed antagonism on P. solanacearum. Antibiotic substances might be involved in this process.

Abstract:
Daily and total elongation of spears, plus elongation rates, and the number of days to reach maximum height of spears prior to branching were measured on 5-year-old asparagus plants of cultivars Atlas, Ciprés, Gijnlim, Jersey Giant, JWC1, UC-157 F1, and UC-157 F2. Six measurement periods were carried out every other week during a spring harvest, measuring spears from emergence to maximum height before branching (5 mm of branch above budscale).Daily elongation varied widely through harvest, from less than 1 cm/day when average temperatures were below 10 °C, to more than 14 cm when daily temperatures reached a mean between 16 to 18 °C. Total spear length varied from an average of 50 cm, at the beginning of spring, to an average of 32 cm at the end of spring. Elongation rates varied between and within periods: less than 1cm/day at the beginning of the season to more than 15 cm/day at the end of the season; within a given period lower rates prevail at start of elongation. Days to reach maximum height varied from up to 13 days, at the beginning of the season, to 5 days at the end of the harvesting period. Cultivars showed somewhat similar elongation patterns; however, variations observed could have significant effects on quality and total commercial yield of spears.

We tested 5 German cultivars (‘Ravel’, ‘Rambo’, ‘Rally’, ‘Ramada’, ‘Rapsody’), 2 Spanish cv. (‘Cipres’ and ‘Plaverd’), 2 Dutch cv. (‘Backlim’ and ‘Grolim’) and French cv. ‘Orane’ in the field conditions. The field experiment was carried out in two consecutive years (2005-2006) at Kruszyn Krajeński near Bydgoszcz on a sandy soil. Adults and larvae ofC. duodecimpunctata(twelvespotted asparagus beetles - T-SAB) andC. asparagi(common asparagus beetles - CAB) reached over 91% of all insects settled on asparagus summer stalks. The German cultivars ‘Rambo’ and ‘Rally’ were considerably settled by adults and larvae of T-SAB. The highest number of individuals (adults and larvae) of CAB on the Dutch cv. ‘Backlim’ were observed. However, German cv. ‘Rapsody’ were significantly less numerous (both CAB and T-SAB). Moreover Dutch cv. ‘Backlim’ was more occupied by adults and larvae of CAB in drip irrigation plots than all five tested German cultivars. Also adults and larvae of T-SAB as well as CAB often prefer drip irrigated asparagus summer stalks.

Abstract:
The resistance of 33 major olive cultivars to Verticillium dahliae was assessed in four experiments conducted under controlled conditions. Nine-month-old nursery olive plants were inoculated with a defoliating isolate (V117) of V. dahliae. Resistance was evaluated by assessing symptom severity using a 0–4 rating scale and estimating the area under disease progress curves with reference to the maximum value potentially reached over the assessment period (AUDPCP). The percentage of plants killed and that of plants that recovered from the disease were used as additional parameters for classifying the cultivars. Twenty-six of the 33 cultivars were found to be susceptible or extremely susceptible to the defoliating V. dahliae isolate. They exhibited values for AUDPCP higher than 45% with mortality higher than 37.5%. A second group of cultivars, which included `Cipresino', `Koroneiki', `Oblonga', and `Sevillenca', were classified as moderately resistant because they showed an important reduction of the final mean severity values and of values for AUDPCP that ranged from 23% to 42%. `Changlot Real', `Empeltre', and `Frantoio' were resistant to the defoliating isolate of V. dahliae. The resistance of `Empeltre' and `Frantoio', although previously reported, was consistently confirmed, because the two cultivars exhibited no dead plants and had very low values for AUDPCP and final disease. This is the first report of resistance of `Changlot Real' to Verticillium wilt based on ability of the plants to recover from infection and the absence of dead plants. These three cultivars will be useful for inclusion in Verticillium wilt-breeding programs.

Abstract:
Until today, only Leccino and Fs-17 (=Favolosa®) olive cultivars proved resistant to Xylella fastidiosa subsp. pauca (Xfp) due to a low presence of bacteria in the xylem. Integrated disease management in olive growing areas threatened by the spread of Xfp is crucial to overcoming the environmental, economic and social crisis. Since the EU Decision allows for the plantation of resistant olive cultivars in infected areas, there is a need to define a suitable plantation system for these cultivars. The adoption of new planting systems, such as intensive and super-intensive (SHD), could compensate for the economic losses and restore the olive agroecosystem. The aim is to ascertain the suitability of the available Xfp-resistant cultivars to SHD planting systems that demonstrate the best economic and environmental sustainability. Hence, a five-year study was established in an experimental SHD olive orchard (Southern Italy) in order to analyse the main vegetative and productive traits of Leccino and Fs-17, together with four other Italian cultivars (Cipressino, Coratina, Frantoio and Urano), compared with the well-adapted cultivars to SHD orchards (Arbequina and Arbosana), by means of the von Bertalanffy function. The results indicated that cv. Fs-17 showed sufficient suitability for SHD planting systems, giving the best-accumulated yield despite some canopy growth limitations, whereas cv. Leccino did not show satisfactory results in terms of both vegetative and yield parameters, confirming its suitability for intensive planting systems. These results are useful for optimizing integrated resistance management in Xfp-infected areas by planting resistant host plants.

Abstract:
Aim of the study: Seed removal may be a determining filter for regeneration. Factors such as leaf litter, tree cover and seed density affect seed removal. This aims to assess three aspects involving on post dispersal seed removal of four woody species (Lithraea caustica, Maytenus boaria, Quillaja saponaria and Retanilla ephedra) of a sclerophyll forest.Study area: Andean Mediterranean sclerophyll forest of Quillaja saponaria and Lithraea caustica located in the Río de Los Cipreses National Reserve, Chile.Materials and methods: Seven experimental plots were set up, in which seeds were offered in an experiment with variations in leaf litter, tree cover and seed density. Generalized Linear Mixed Models (GLMM) were used for the statistical analysis. Camera traps were installed to identify the seed removers.Main results: Q. saponaria seeds were more removed than the seeds of the other species (0.84, observed mean). Whereas that M. boaria and R. ephedra did not show significant differences on the removal of their seeds (0.77 and 0.67 respectively), both were more removed than L. caustica (0.59). The removal of M. boaria, Q. saponaria and R. ephedra seeds was lower in the presence of leaf litter. No factor influenced the removal of L. caustica seeds. Seed removers were identified as invasive alien species such as Rattus sp. and Oryctolagus cuniculus and native species such as Lycalopex culpaeus.Research highlights: Three woody species of this forest suffer severe seed removal by invasive alien fauna with major implications for the resilience of these forests. The coverage of leaf litter is key to hide away the seeds, increasing survival and could promote germination. Keywords: invasive alien fauna; Mediterranean forest; sclerophyll forest; seed removal factors.

Abstract:
A dependence on proteoglycans for cationic lipid-mediated gene transfer has been suggested in previous studies [Mislick and Baldeschwieler (1996) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 93, 12349-12354; Mounkes, Zhong, Cipres-Palacin, Heath and Debs (1998) J. Biol. Chem. 273, 26164-26170]. We have evaluated the mechanism of proteoglycan involvement in cationic lipid-mediated gene transfer. DNA plasmid uptake and gene expression were studied in wild-type Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells (CHO-K1), heparan sulphate-deficient CHO cells (pgsD-677) and proteoglycan-deficient CHO cells (pgsB-618). At an optimal ratio of cationic lipid to DNA, a substantial decrease in reporter gene expression was observed in proteoglycan-deficient cells compared with that in heparan sulphate-deficient and wild-type cells. However, there were no differences in reporter gene expression between the cell lines when transfected by electroporation. Moreover, all cell lines exhibited equal cationic-lipid-DNA complex uptake activities, as assessed by the measurement of intracellular 32P-labelled and rhodamine-labelled DNA plasmid. An analysis of reflected-light images of wild-type and proteoglycan-deficient cells suggested that cationic lipids were preferentially toxic to proteoglycan-deficient cells. Cell-growth assays confirmed this, showing that cationic lipids exhibited a greater anti-proliferative activity in proteoglycan-deficient cells and in chlorate-treated wild-type cells than in the other cell lines. The growth-inhibitory effect of cationic lipids was abrogated by the addition of exogenous sulphated glycosaminoglycans. We conclude that the glycosaminoglycan part of proteoglycans serves a protective role against cationic lipid cytotoxicity, allowing optimal transfection efficiency in vitro.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
A new genus named Dendrodacrys is proposed for a monophyletic group in Dacrymycetaceae, containing species with pulvinate to depressed basidiocarps, distinctly branched hymenial hyphidia, and up to 3-septate mature basidiospores. Four taxa in this group, occurring in Europe, are proposed as new species, viz. De. ciprense, De. concrescens, De. ellipsosporum, and De. oblongisporum, based both on morphological and DNA data (nrDNA, RPB1, RPB2, TEF-1α, 12S). These new species are all described in detail, illustrated, and compared with other published taxa that with which they can be confounded. The new combination De. paraphysatum is proposed after revising the type material of Dacrymyces paraphysatus, but other combinations or potentially new non-European species descriptions are postponed pending further studies of additional specimens.

Abstract:
A field experiment was carried out during two subsequent years to study the drought tolerance potentials of the existing olive cultivars at Olive Development Centre, Kigus, Mandi, Himachal Pradesh. In this field trial, 33 uniform and healthy, 25-year-old olive trees of 11 olivcultivars viz., Canino, Cipressino, Coratina, Cornicobra, Frantoio, Gordal Sevilana, Hojiblanca, Leccino, Manzanilla, Moraiolo and Pendolino planted on contour system at 6 m apart were selected. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with eleven treatments replicated three times. Olive cultivar Leccino showed lesser reduction in growth, upholds higher leaf water potential, higher photosynthetic activity, increased nutrient uptake and accumulated more osmoprotectants like proline, ABA and free amino acids, which enable it to perform better under rainfed conditions of Himachal Pradesh. On the other hand, cultivars Pendolino and Gordal Sevilana showed more water stress related symptoms of leaf yellowing, leaf rolling and shoot tip bending. It may be inferred that cultivar Leccino can tolerate drought stress conditions better than other cultivars

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Background In order to preserve residual hearing in patients with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) who receive a cochlear implant (CI), insertion trauma to the delicate structures of the cochlea needs to be minimized. The surgical approach comprises the conventional mastoidectomy-posterior tympanotomy (MPT) to arrive at the middle ear, followed by either a cochleostomy (CO) or the round window (RW) approach. Both techniques have their benefits and disadvantages. Another important aspect in structure preservation is the design of the electrode array. Two different designs are used: a “straight” lateral wall lying electrode array (LW) or a “pre-curved” perimodiolar lying electrode array (PM). Interestingly, until now, the best surgical approach and design of the implant is uncertain. Our hypothesis is that there is a difference in hearing preservation outcomes between the four possible treatment options. Methods We designed a monocenter, multi-arm, randomized controlled trial to compare insertion trauma between four groups of patients, with each group having a unique combination of an electrode array type (LW or PM) and surgical approach (RW or CO). In total, 48 patients will be randomized into one of these four intervention groups. Our primary objective is the comparison of postoperative hearing preservation between these four groups. Secondly, we aim to assess structure preservation (i.e., scalar translocation, with basilar membrane disruption or tip fold-over of array) for each group. Thirdly, we will compare objective outcomes of hearing and structure preservation by way of electrocochleography (ECochG). Discussion Cochlear implantation by way of a cochleostomy or round window approach, using different electrode array types, is the standard medical care for patients with severe to profound bilateral sensorineural hearing loss, as it is a relatively simple and low-risk procedure that greatly benefits patients. However, loss of residual hearing remains a problem. This trial is the first randomized controlled trial that evaluates the effect of cochlear insertion trauma of several CI treatment options on hearing preservation. Trial registration Netherlands Trial Register (NTR) NL8586. Registered on 4 May 2020. Retrospectively registered; 3/48 participants were included before registration.
