Abstract:
Limited theoretical research exists regarding attrition of nontraditional (older, part-time, commuter) students on American college and university campuses today. Thus, when colleges or universities seek to improve programs specifically designed for such students, there is no broad research base on which to rely. The present study sought to determine if there were differences, especially ones the institution could do something about, between non-traditional students who left such a program and those who completed it. A conceptual model of non-traditional student attrition, developed by adult educators/researchers, Drs. John Bean and Barbara Metzner, provided the theoretical base for the study. Data were obtained from 80 questions on a survey mailed to 469 leavers and finishers in the Eastern Oregon State College External Degree Program. The questions represented four variable categories of the Bean/Metzner model: (1) background, (2) defining, (3) academic, and (4) environmental, and psychological (satisfaction) and academic outcomes. Of the 402 deliverable surveys, 82% were returned from 112 leavers and 204 finishers. Chi-square and t-tests of significance provided little differentiation between leavers and finishers on background and defining variables. For example, leavers and finishers were similar in age (most were 44-46 years); the majority were Caucasian, married, and had children; lived in Oregon communities of less than 50,000 population within 60 miles of post-secondary institution (not necessarily Eastern Oregon State College); had performed well (3.00-3.49 GPA) in high school; and were employed outside the home at least 30 hours a week. Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to ascertain the relationship between student persistence and financial aid through a meta-analysis of existing empirical research. The significance of the study was that financial aid policy would be enhanced if the facts regarding the relationship were clearly known. The meta-analysis assessed forty-nine studies, representing seventy samples. Studies were organized into two categories: (1) studies that compared financial aid recipients to nonrecipients and (2) studies that examined persistence differences among financial aid recipients. Studies were integrated by converting each study result into the common metric of effect size. The meta-analysis results were reported in average unweighted and weighted effect sizes. In the latter case results were weighted by the number in the treatment group. Average effect sizes were interpreted by (1) absolute magnitude of effect sizes, (2) graphic representation, and (3) an elasticity measure. The meta-analysis examining the total sample found financial aid to have a small, but significant, positive effect on student persistence, thereby enabling lower income students to persist at a rate roughly equal to that of middle and upper income students. The average unweighted and weighted effect sizes of the total sample were +.13 and +.06, respectively. The length of persistence measured, the type of institution attended, and whether studies controlled for academic ability were found to be mediators influencing the magnitude and direction of the effect size. When results of studies that examined persistence differences among financial aid recipients were integrated, the following conclusions were reached: (1) there was little difference in the persistence of males and females, (2) minority students persisted significantly less than white students, and (3) the amount of financial aid had a significant positive effect on persistence. When forms of financial aid were analyzed, although the effect sizes were reasonably small and the differences in effect sizes among forms were minimal, combinations of aid were determined to be more effective than single forms. This finding probably reflects more the amount of financial aid than the form of financial aid.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to investigate various factors that contribute to attendance levels at NCAA Division I men's soccer games. A questionnaire was sent to all NCAA Division I men's soccer programs. The final response rate was 84.5 percent with 158 of 187 questionnaires returned. The questionnaire examined four areas: team success, field location, promotional activities and ticket price.

The data indicated that there is a significant relationship between average attendance levels and home soccer fields that are between .6 and mile away from the dormitories. Off-campus fields and the existence of an admission fee were found to have significant relationships with attendance levels. The use of many promotional activities and materials were also found to have a relationship with average attendance levels.

Abstract:
This study investigates the spiritual subjectivities of pastors in the Mainstream White Middle Class Evangelical Church in the context of American capitalism. The Evangelical church carries extreme amounts of power and influence in shaping the beliefs of individuals in American society. However, very little pointed research of pastors' spiritual subjectivities that guide their teachings and views in this sub-sect of church culture is present in academia. Anthropology, along with other disciplines, often focuses on dominant churches from an etic perspective of politics and power relations without fully considering the spiritual beliefs of pastors. This etic perspective can miss the deeply interwoven factors, including understanding of the Scriptures and pastors' roles in their congregations, challenges associated with religious consumerist competition, and conceptualizations of church "success" that shape pastors subjectivities, and in turn help shape American Christian culture. Pastors navigate the tension between the broader capitalistic social forces and their spiritual and Biblical beliefs as many pastors of the church aim to change the unquestioned adherence to these ideals. Building on my seven years of experience as a pastor in the Orlando area and drawing on current research with a group of Evangelical pastors, I demonstrate in this study that although capitalistic social forces shape many ideals of individuals in the American Evangelical church culture, understanding pastors' spiritual subjectivities is crucial when investigating the influence of the church in America.

The purpose of this study was to investigate recruiting and retention practices for African American music students in selected colleges and universities. This study also investigated model programs formulated for the improvement of African American student enrollment in higher education, generally or in other professional fields and specialized programs.Subjects in the study were twenty-two music executives in music units of selected colleges and universities based on three general criteria as follows: (1) Historically Black Colleges and Universities whose enrollments were 4,000 and above; (2) Institutions that participated in the Richardson Study and cited for having success in minority student access, retention, and graduation; and (3) Institutions that participated in the National Black Student Retention Conferences (1987 or 1988).A survey questionnaire was completed by the subjects in order to determine the effectiveness of recruitment and retention practices and strategies employed by music units. The data were organized for analysis by frequencies, percentages and calculations of chi-squared statistics.The results of this study suggest that there are a variety of recruiting practices and admission policies that may impact increased enrollment of African American students in music units. Various retention practices were determined that may promote persistence and achievement. Support services were identified as financial resources and special assistance programs. Other factors included non-academic retention predictors and the presence of African American faculty in the music unit.Another valuable source of information regarding the recruitment and retention of Black students was found in eight model programs. Recruiting strategies included outreach programs, precollege programs, linkages with elementary and secondary schools, faculty, staff and alumni involvement, and flexible, multiple criteria for college admission. Retention strategies included support services that focused on the academic, cultural and social needs of African American students.This study revealed numerous findings which may be employed by music units. These findings offer supportive evidence for the development of model programs that promote and enhance access, retention, and graduation for the African American music student in higher education.

Abstract:
Small private colleges represent a unique and important element of diversity within American higher education. Their small size, heavy dependence on tuition, and limited resources, have caused them to be repeatedly identified as singularly threatened with enrollment declines. Despite these predictions the evidence indicates that most of these colleges survived the 1980s and many thrived. This study had two major goals. The first was the characterization of institutions within the population during the 1980s with regards to environmental characteristics, institutional attributes and academic strategic actions. The second was the description of the relationships between these variables and enrollment changes in the 1980s. The population was composed of Liberal Arts I and II colleges with independent ownership and average Fall, 1980 enrollment between 100 and 1000. This study utilized data from two primary sources; a questionnaire distributed to academic officers, and several self-reported, public domain sources. The survey was distributed to all 294 institutions in the population with 219 returned (74% completion rate). Basic descriptive statistics were used to characterize the population. A list of statistically and substantively significant variables were identified using a set of criteria for causal inference. Factor analysis was utilized to develop factors from the significant variables and these factors were entered into a multiple regression model to explain variance in enrollment growth. These colleges were located in highly populated areas shared with many institutions offering two- and four-year degrees. Nearly three-fourths of the academic programs at these institutions were classified as liberal arts in 1989. The 1980s saw an increase in the number and proportion of professional programs and the number of programs for "non-traditional" students. These colleges added Associates and Masters degrees, and increased the number and proportion of graduate students. The selectivity of nearly 90% of these institutions was minimally or moderately difficult in 1989 and 84% were church-related. Two categories of environmental characteristics were related to enrollment changes in the 1980s. The first was the size of the immediate community, and the second was the level of local competition. Community size was the only environmental factor which substantively explains any of the variation in 1980s enrollment change. Four factors were identified which characterized the relationship of institutional attributes and enrollment changes in the 1980s. These factors were; the age of students, the balance of professional and liberal arts programs, and two variables related to institutional image. Collectively, three of the four factors explain ten percent of the variance in 1980s enrollment change. Eight factors characterized institutional actions influencing enrollments. These factors include adult programs and policies, institutional student selectivity, internal activities focused on traditional student pools, non-traditional student support and recruitment, non-traditional program development, changes in institutional policies (calendar and directed studies), addition of graduate programming, and increase in transfer students. Collectively, factors one, two, three, five, and eight explain over 30% of the variance in 1980s enrollment change. When all fourteen of these factors were entered into a multiple regression model, the six factors that loaded were; student selectivity, traditional student responses, nontraditional programming, transfer students, average student age, and community size. These factors explained nearly 35% of the variance in 1980s enrollment change. These findings indicate that the greatest influences on enrollment change in the 1980s were related to non-traditional students. Those institutions which showed increases in non-traditional programs, non-traditional students, and average student age, showed the greatest increase in enrollments. Those institutions located in rural regions and those which reported the use of more traditional institutional responses to enrollment challenges (e.g. freshman advising programs) showed lower enrollment gains. Finally, higher levels of student selectivity co varied significantly with enrollment rates.

Abstract:
A survey was conducted to determine current conditions pertaining to church organ acquisitions and renovations in selected Roman Catholic parishes in the United States. A need exists to ascertain what problems are occurring with the process of organ acquisition, what solutions are possible, and how trends in organ acquisition are measuring up with the principles outlined by Vatican II.Addresses of organ companies were obtained from the current National Association of Pastoral Musician's Organ Builders Directory_ (1988). The 105 organ companies queried sent the researcher the addresses of 711 past and current Roman Catholic customers; each customer was sent a questionnaire. Fifty-eight percent of the contacts responded, supplying significant information from 362 parishes in the forty-eight contiguous United States. Information was obtained regarding: organ installation/renovation, selection, organ companies considered, console placement, parish size, age of church building, fund-raising, greatest difficulties experienced, points of advice based on experience, diocesan organ acquisition policies, acoustical concerns, and reasons for choosing a pipe or an electronic instrument.Reviews of related research and discussions of current publications, Roman Catholic church music legislation, new technologies used for accompanying church music, and differing opinions of church leaders supplement the survey research.Parishes reported their most difficult problems encountered during organ acquistion and offered their best points of advice for avoiding problems. The data include opinions regarding pipe and electronic instruments; organ companies frequently utilized; examples of sucessful organ console placement; the status and examples of diocesan written policies concerning keyboard accompaniment instruments; the benefits of combining fund-raising with parish education and communication; and the need for greater concern and education regarding acoustics.Case studies describe Roman parishes that achieved quality worship services after thorough preparations for their organ acquisition. Beginning parishes need the greatest amount of help for organ planning. Conclusions call for national-level attention and education about the organ acquisition process, and encourage dioceses to facilitate this goal with well-written policies.

Abstract:
This dissertation analyzes the nature and degree of attitudinal change that has taken place within a key sector of the Catholic Church, i.e, lay leaders, in the period between 1966 and 1987 in two different national contexts, Chile and the United States. It builds on an unfinished study by Ivan Vallier, who attempted to clarify the ambiguous position of the laity in the Church and in society, in implementing the reforms of Vatican II. The author interviewed 96 middle-class lay leaders, plus dozens of informants. The analysis examines continuity and change on three issues. Some key findings include: a significant change in concepts of Church and God, toward more intimate/maternal images that encompass an active social dimension; much greater salience and complexity of the 'democratization' issue, particularly concerning the role of women, in the American Church; and the continuing imperative of the socio-political issue for the Chileans and their demands for more, not less, political involvement by the hierarchy. The results reflect the persistent tensions between 'progressive' and 'conservative' models of change, and help to explain the continuing importance of religion in modern society.

Abstract:
This study investigated enrollment management practices found in higher education. The research identified enrollment management and retention practices described in the higher education literature. These suggested practices were incorporated into a sixty-six question survey that was distributed to a random sample of colleges and universities taken from the 1999 US News and World Report of college rankings. The survey data were used to identify which of the suggested enrollment management practices were of greatest utility. First, the sixty-six items were grouped into 14 categories of enrollment management strategies. Second, the institutional responses for each category were averaged and then correlated with each institution's graduation rate. Finally, each institution's "yes" responses for the entire survey were totaled and correlated with each institution's graduation rate. This study developed a list of the 26 most frequently used enrollment management practices in higher education, and as well, identified the 10 least used enrollment management practices. Given the results of this study graduation rate is not a sufficient criterion to assess enrollment management practices at a college or university. Enrollment management strategies contribute to many institutional and student outcomes; thus, multiple indicators are required to accurately evaluate enrollment management practices.

"Heathen Men and Publicans" looks at the ways in which freedom of conscience and association intertwined in from the early colonial through the early national eras of American history, by examining the arguments which excommunicated Protestants leveled in an effort to protest the church discipline with which they were faced, as well as the reforms they endeavored to enact within the church bodies they joined and created following their excisions from religious societies. Likewise, the dissertation asks how conceptions of church discipline bled over into the civil sphere to influence politics and political culture in the years following the American Revolution. From 1730-1840, alternative conceptions of liberty of conscience and association dueled for preeminence in the chapels and meetinghouses of American Protestants. Where ecclesiastical leaders and many laymen described the liberties in question in corporate terms--as the property of religious bodies duly established--those faced with church discipline increasingly argued that individual conceptions of freedom of conscience and association deserved to be protected within associated societies. to this end, excommunicates following the Revolution embarked on a number of novel experiments in church government, minimizing the importance of church ordinances, disputing the existence of heresy, arguing for the liberty of excommunicates to employ the property of the religious meetings to which they had once belonged, and insisting that members, not church bodies, held the right to decide if and when they would exit a religious association. Even as many excommunicates sought to subject themselves to new religious communities following their excisions, they nonetheless contributed to the rise of an increasingly atomized sense of individual conscience in the early American Republic.

Abstract:
In the late 1970's and 1980's, education issues formed a pivotal part of the American religious conservative agenda. The issues of school prayer, textbook content and the teaching of evolution in particular inspired lively debate and committed activism on the part of conservative Protestant leaders and activists. Confronting the behemoth of secular humanism, these leaders sought to win converts and to foment action in the converted through two separate modes of rhetoric: the emotional, which used impassioned arguments, and the intellectual, a more phlegmatic approach used to achieve political ends. Finding their roots in the 1920's, conservative Protestants have placed paramount importance on education issues throughout American history, believing that the United States is a fundamentally Christian nation, founded on a normative Protestant world view, and that American children should be taught according to these principles.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of selected student background variables and traits with academic persistence of first-time, full-time, Native American students enrolled at a major Southwestern university from the 1988 to 1990 school years. The predictors associated with persistence of Native American students were identified by use of the Student Information Form, a survey questionnaire devised by Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP, 1990). The survey was administered during each Fall semester Freshmen Orientation to a total of 275 Native American students, 147 of whom voluntarily returned the questionnaire. Of this group, 83 questionnaires constituted the sample. The research centered on an examination of probability for six predictors and five psychological characteristics with academic persistence used as a dependent variable. The six predictors were: (1) high school grade point average, (2) American College Test (ACT) scores, (3) residence status, (4) parental income, (5) parental education, and (6) financial aid. The Logistic Regression Analysis was utilized to analyze data, and the obtained findings indicated that there was no significant correlation between Native American students' high school grade point average, ACT scores, parental income, parental education, residency, or financial aid and their academic persistence at a Southwestern university between 1988 to 1990. The analyses suggested a significant correlation between remaining at a university for four or more semesters and leadership, attitude, and values, and future goals. These three factors appeared to be the best predictors of academic persistence for Native American students.

Typical public secondary school students seem unable to compete with distinguished public and elite private secondary school students when seeking admission to highly selective colleges. This study has identified the characteristics that distinguish college guidance and school-wide programs at public secondary schools perceived to be the strongest (distinguished) from other public secondary schools. School boards, public secondary school counselors, school administrators, and the communities they serve now have college guidance programs they can emulate to better prepare students for admission to highly selective colleges.

Abstract:
The relationship between FTE enrollments and state appropriations to public four-year colleges and universities is a fundamental issue basic to numerous institutional and state policy decisions. Yet, the relationship is obscure and may have changed during the period from 1965 to 1982. Data for this dissertation were obtained from three sources. Enrollment data were obtained from the Higher Education General Information Survey (HEGIS) information as edited and entered onto computer data tape by the Center for the study of Higher Education (CSHE) at the University of Arizona. Appropriations data were obtained from the annual issues of M. M. Chambers' Appropriations of State Tax Funds for Operating Expenses of Higher Education as edited and entered onto computer data tapes at the CSHE. Variations in the reporting of these sources were obtained through a mail survey instrument. Appropriations data were adjusted for inflation using the national and regional Consumer Price Indices (CPI). The appropriations data were corrected so that all states are reported consistently for (1) tuition, (2) employee benefits, and (3) capital equipment. The edited enrollment and the corrected appropriations data were then regressed for two time periods (1965-77 and 1977-82). The results determined the nature of change in the enrollment/appropriation relationship over time. The results show that there does appear to be a relationship between enrollments and appropriations which is stronger for certain types of institutions. Nationally, the relationship in mean constant dollar appropriations per FTE enrollments has not undergone any radical changes. However, the slopes of the regression lines have undergone statistically significant changes from period 1 (1965-66 to 1976-77) to period 2 (1977-78 to 1982-83). Yet the regression coefficients did not decline in a major way over time for the national sample, for institutions by Carnegie Classification System or by state. Wide ranges of difference were found to exist among states. However, a considerable majority of 35 states and most Carnegie classification institutions did not demonstrate a significant change in the amount of constant dollar or adjusted funding per FTE student over time.

Abstract:
Giles Corey as Man, Myth, and Memory Giles Corey is remembered today as the man who suffered the singular fate of being pressed to death during the Salem witchcraft trials of 1692. Corey was neither the first, nor the only, man killed during the trials, yet has captured the public imagination where others have not. His refusal to stand before the court is depicted as a testament to his principled moral commitment, idealizing him as a hero ahead of his time. An examination of seventeenth-century records, however, reveal Corey engaging in illegal behavior, heckling his neighbors, alienating members of his own family, and generally inspiring dislike. How, then, did the glorified popular image of him originate, and why? Surveying the earliest works focused on Corey reveals him as a mythic construction of late nineteenth century. Authors recast his story out of shame for the 1692 executions and a general nostalgia for the agrarian past as a foil for the turmoil and corruption they saw in the present. Through these revisions, Corey entered American cultural memory as a symbolic caricature of preindustrial virtue and small-town values. Family, and Tradition in the Lives of George Robert Twelves Hewes, Robert Twelves, and Boston’s Old South Church George Robert Twelves Hewes, familiar to scholars of the American Revolution as the central figure of Alfred Young’s The Shoemaker and the Tea Party, had an unusually long name. Middle names were rare at the time of his birth, and multiple middle names rarer still. Why did Hewes’ parents bestow such an unwieldy name on him? Although Hewes shared his name with his father and uncle, another namesake, Robert Twelves (a distant relative, who built the original Old South Church), provided valuable social capital. However, the ties commemorated by the name did not remain transparent, and its meaning evolved over time. Just as Robert Twelves faded from memory in the Hewes family during the late nineteenth century, the caretakers of the Old South Meetinghouse revived his name to serve a new purpose. In saving the church from the threat of demolition, they reimagined its role in the nation’s founding and attached it to a version of the past that celebrated great men, including its purported builder. Exploring the intertwined histories of Hewes, his namesakes, and the church where his family worshipped illuminates both the varied purposes a name could serve and the role of memory in reconstructing the past.
