Hanssen, Jessica Allen. "Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Narrative Fallibility, and the Young Adult Reader." Literature 4, no. 2 (May 27, 2024): 135–46. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/literature4020010.

Full text
Abstract:
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon presents a remarkably complex narrator, 15-year-old Christopher Boone. Due to his implied autism spectrum condition, Christopher is possibly the ultimate in “reliable” narrators: he struggles to articulate emotions and is incapable of telling or understanding lies. His point of view (POV) is an extreme form of first-person limited, with Christopher at times seeming (or even yearning) to be more computer than human. The limitations of Christopher’s experience are reflected in his narrative self-presentation, and while, ordinarily, these would damage any sort of achieved authority, they instead underscore the book’s powerful thematic messages. Christopher’s narrative fallibility echoes the developmental stage of its crossover young adult (YA) audience: Curious Incident works with fallibility to establish a strong narrative voice that inspires an empathetic connection between Christopher and his implied reader. This article therefore considers how narrative fallibility is linked to constructions of adolescence in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, and further explores the relationship between the narrator and the implied reader(s). Positioned within narratology-based theories and secondary research on Haddon and representations of neurodiversity in YA literature, it provides guidance for teachers and scholars who might question the value of authenticity in this or similar novels.

Abstract:
In In re Christopher I., the California Court of Appeal upheld a juvenile court's decision to withdraw life-sustaining medical treatment for a then-1-year-old dependent of the court. Christopher I. had come under juvenile court custody after his biological father, Moises I., physically abused him and rendered him comatose. Christopher's biological mother, Tamara S., was either unwilling or unable to protect him. After the disposition hearing, Tamara petitioned for a “Do Not Resuscitate” (DNR) order for Christopher and/or removal of his life-sustaining medical treatment. Moises opposed, asserting that the juvenile court did not have authority to make medical decisions for a dependent child, for whom counsel had been assigned, without appointing a guardian. The juvenile court rejected Moises's argument and proceeded with an evidentiary hearing. All six physicians who testified supported the withdrawal of treatment or at least a DNR order.

Jeong, Youn-Gil. "Analysis of the Narrative Structure of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time as a Meta-narrative." Korean Society for Teaching English Literature 27, no. 3 (December 31, 2023): 205–27. http://dx.doi.org/10.19068/jtel.2023.27.3.08.

Abstract:
This paper analyzes Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time in relation to its meta-narrative qualities. This entails analyzing how the fusion of mystery elements and the autistic perspective enriches the novel’s thematic depth and narrative complexity, and how the narrative features inherent in Christopher’s perspective shape the novel’s structure and contribute to a proper understanding of the complex and varied autistic features. The paper demonstrates that Haddon’s method presents the overall narrative of the story as thoroughly factual, while at the same time metaphorizing the character of Christopher. In doing so, the paper emphasizes that Haddon’s portrayal of Christopher’s maturation is a meta-narrative in the way that a mystery or detective narrative is constructed and that Christopher, the narrator, is communicating with the reader by making himself the object of the narrative. In conclusion, the paper shows that Christopher’s search for the killer of his dog is a process that reveals the different layers of social disorder represented by his parents and neighbors. It will also argue that his role as a detective in this process can be seen as a narrative vehicle for revealing familial and social conflicts, as well as a signifier of the effects of these conflicts.

Abstract:
I have also had the experience of sitting—though not silently—through deliberations in the ICJ. Often professors say, “Oh well you know, they were not quite clear where they were going because they had been ambiguous here.” The common law world of academia often misses the point spectacularly, because in common law courts—even when you have a lot of judges—the tradition is that a judge writes his or her own judgment, and either other judges agree or you have to distill the ratio decidendi of the case from the different judgments. It is a totally different exercise when the judges must produce a collective judgment, especially if they must produce it in more than one language. Had academics been a fly on the wall in the deliberations at the ICJ they would have known we knew exactly what we were doing: we did not all agree on the outcome, and this is a disagreement that has been reduced to writing in order to enable the court to move on.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of the paper is to provide a profile of Christopher Fox. Design/methodology/approach – Christopher provides a short biographical account of his life thus far. He is then interviewed by Jerome. He describes how he has coped with serious depression. Findings – Christopher claims that he owes his own life to two things, Philosophy and his close friend Helena. Research limitations/implications – The wide diversity of first person accounts shows the necessity of collecting them as they reflect the lived experience of people battling with serious mental health problems. The personal is often lost in the quantitative world of p values and statistical tests. Practical implications – Christopher mentions being helped by numerous informal chats with peers rather than medication and focused psychological therapies. Social implications – While Christopher drew much sustenance from the works of Nietzsche, he was most helped by a friend who had been his learning mentor at school. Friendship can be critical in maintaining hope. Originality/value – Like many before him, Christopher says he “learnt more about himself in the days where I sat in the garden (with peer survivors) than in the collective sessions of therapy, CBT or hospital visits”.
