Vitelli, Federico. "Causes and possible consequences of hybridisation in angelfishes at Christmas Island." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2019. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/2197.

Full text
Abstract:
The angelfishes (family Pomacanthidae) have the greatest proportion (~30%) of hybridising species, compared to other families of reef fishes, with 26 species implicated in hybridisation. However, very little is known about hybridisation in angelfish, especially in terms of fitness of the hybrids and possible ecological consequences. Hybrids between three species (C. flavissima, C. eibli and C. vroliki) in the genus Centropyge have previously been reported from Christmas island, where these have been observed in heterospecific harems and interbreeding. This provides the unique opportunity to examine the breakdown in assortative mating in marine fishes. The broad aim of this study was to determine causes and consequences of hybridisation in angelfish at Christmas Island (Western Australia). To achieve this, the abundances, habitat and fitness of the three angelfish parent species and their hybrids have been investigated. Based on 14 years of surveys, C. flavissima was abundant (4.53 per 250 m2 +/- 0.66), whereas C. eibli, C. vrolikii, and all hybrid combinations were consistently low in abundance or rare (average abundance < 0.3 per 250 m2 +/- 0.03). Parent species and their hybrids displayed high niche overlap, with all being more abundant at 20 m depth compared to 5 m, and showing similar diets that comprised a mix of green, red, and brown algae. Thus, rarity of parent species and niche overlap would help to promote hybridisation in angelfishes at Christmas Island. The relative fitness of angelfish hybrids against the parent species was evaluated by comparing key life history traits. Both the von Bertalanffy growth coefficient (k) and the asymptotic length (L∞) of the hybrid C. flavissima × C. eibli did not differ from the parent species C. flavissima. In comparison, C. eibli tended to grow at a slightly faster rate but reached a smaller size than the hybrid and C. flavissima, potentially increasing its reproductive success. Both females and males of the hybrid C. flavissima × C. eibli presented similarly developed gonads and showed all stages of oocytes and spermatocytes development to the parent species. The presence of post-ovulatory follicles indicated possible spawning activity (and fertility) of the hybrid. The level of fitness of the hybrids at Christmas Island was similar to their parent species, and could explain their persistence at this location. Angelfish hybrids formed harems with all parent species and the species composition of the harems reflected the underlying patterns of abundance for the parent species. The total number of fish and number of males did not differ between different types of harems (mixed and pure). Harems comprised an average of ~4 fishes, generally with one male, but some harems had 2 males, which were found in each type of harem. Almost one third of the dominant males in the mixed harems were hybrids, while ranks two to six were occupied by similar percentages of hybrids. The ability of the angelfish hybrids reaching similar ranks as both males and females of parent species and being in similar sized harems in mixed harems, combined with them displaying similar growth and size, indicates that their reproductive output would be similar to the parent species C. eibli and C. vrolikii. However, since C. flavissima was far more abundant and was the only species to form mono-specific harems, its reproductive output would be larger than the other two species and its hybrid. This study provides empirical evidence that hybridisation in reef fishes conforms to terrestrial-based theories, and thus advances our understanding of the processes underlying hybridisation in coral-reef systems. Given the variable changes in environmental conditions occurring in the ocean, hybridisation and introgression could prove beneficial if it can provide new genotypes that increase the adaptive capacity of hybrids and/or parent species.

Abstract:
In 1974 the Australian Government decided that from 1975 all education on its Territory of Christmas Island, Indian Ocean, would be integrated into a single service. It further decided that all schools would be staffed by Australian teachers from its recent1y established Commonwealth Teaching Service and would implement a curriculum closely reflecting those on the Australian mainland. These were decisive shifts from the previous system of separating the 'Asian' education system from the 'European' (Australian) system. This thesis sets out to find the reasons for these decisions and the expectations, or objectives, of those who made them. The changes to education had many Impacts on the Christmas Island community - both intended or unintended. These impacts are used to assist in evaluations of the policy objectives. The thesis uses the methodology of public policy analysis to examine the links between the government's education policy and its other broader policies regarding the Island. It thus examines operational decisions in the context of strategic considerations. The mid 1970s saw rapid changes in many Australian Government policies. Its new Christmas Island policies were responses to a range of complex, interrelated problems which emerged in the early 1970s - only 15 years after it assumed sovereignty. At the centre of these policy responses was Resettlement. The government's education decisions are examined in the light of the objectives and implications of its Resettlement policy as well as other inputs to the policy problem.

Abstract:
[Truncated abstract] This research investigates social capital within the everyday space and actions of sociability on Christmas Island. The theory of social capital as proposed by Robert Putnam (1995) provides the framework for this investigation which was conducted in two phases. Quantitative and qualitative approaches and a mixed methods concurrent nested strategy were used in both phases of the investigation and the analyses. The analyses also incorporated multiple perspectives of both social capital and physical activity processes. In the first phase, I sought to: (a) uncover the determinants of social capital within the Christmas Island community; (b) develop a social capital typology; and (c) establish the relationship between the determinants of social capital and adults’ physical activity involvement. In all, 212 participants took part in the study . . . Overall, several factors affected women’s social capital and physical activity. These included: (a) women’s societal roles and positions; (b) household and cultural norms relating to gender-based time and space negotiations; (c) ideologies surrounding ethic of care; and (d) role commitment. These factors also influenced women’s recruitment into becoming active in their community. Network embeddedness and autonomy, assimilation and acculturation as well as language and knowledge competency further distinguished the community and physical activity status of European and Asian women. Analysis related to the two physical activity programmes in part 3 showed how various forms of latent social capital within the community can be synergized to produce physical activity benefits and empower inactive and minority-group women. Findings in this study also support trust as an important element in the establishment of relatedness in a physical activity setting.

Agius, Jessica. "Combating a Novel Pathogen Threatening Critically Endangered Reptiles in a Biodiversity Hotspot." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2021. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/25893.

Abstract:
The emergence of a multisystemic and invariably fatal syndrome characterised by facial deformity and lethargy in extinct in the wild Christmas Island endemic and invasive reptiles prompted an investigation into its aetiology. Knowledge pertaining to the ecology and impacts of the agent at the time of the outbreak were limited, threatening efforts to conserve the island’s endemic reptiles. The investigations described in this thesis therefore aimed to enrich understanding of the organism’s pathogenesis, pathophysiology, and epizootiology. Investigations into other agents with the potential to jeopardise conservation efforts were also explored. Following morphological characterisation, genomics revealed the agent was a novel species; Enterococcus lacertideformus, within the Enterococcus faecium clade, possessing genes encoding virulence determinants, resistance traits, and genes underpinning its biofilm phenotype and failure to cultivate in-vitro. Efforts to combat E. lacertideformus were also explored. Pharmacokinetics of enrofloxacin in-vitro showed that 10 mg/kg oral enrofloxacin likely achieved sufficient plasma concentrations. An experimental infection model indicated that the clinical course of E. lacertideformus depended on the inoculation route, and transmission likely occurred through direct contact. Following infection, an in-vivo therapeutic trial showed that enrofloxacin and amoxicillin-clavulanic acid were prospective candidates for treatment. Additionally, health surveillance and metagenomics uncovered disease processes and parasites, and two novel papillomaviruses, respectively, in Christmas Island and Cocos Islands reptiles. In summary, this thesis contributes substantial knowledge regarding the bacterium and its host interactions, while also providing foundational health data on reptile populations. Ultimately, this research guides management strategies and conservation opportunities and informs treatment protocols to combat E. lacertideformus.

Abstract:
Christmas Island Rock Phosphate (CIRP) is known to cause renal fibrosis and depressed growth performance when it is used as a source of calcium and phosphorus in grain based rations for grower pigs. As a result its full potential as an inexpensive mineral supplement has not been realised. This thesis presents a 4 part study of the toxic effects of CIRP and investigates the economic feasibility of including certain antagonists in rations containing CIRP. The data is discussed with special emphasis on aspects of economic importance for the pig industry. The results of the first experiment suggested that the initial renal lesion was focal interstitial fibrosis without obvious prior injury to glomeruli or tubular epithelium. Other evidence confirms the detrimental effect of CIRP on the growth rate of pigs. Evidence from the second experiment is presented to show that rations containing sodium fluoride produced similar kidney lesions to those induced by CIRP, and so support the hypothesis that the fluoride ion content of CIRP is responsible for the renal fibrosis. Additional evidence shows that the solubility of the source of fluoride is an important factor in the development of these lesions. In the third experiment, the absorption and storage of fluoride from 3 sources by young boars in metabolism cages was studied over a 20 week period. The results showed that absorption and storage of fluoride was greater when sodium fluoride was the source than when CIRP was the source. It was least when calcium fluoride was the There was source. no clinical evidence to suggest any of the 3 sources of fluoride had a detrimental effect on renal function. Results of the fourth experiment support the hypothesis that the addition of alumina and ground limestone in combination to rations containing fluoride is able to alleviate growth rate depression and prevent renal fibrosis. However they also show that the reduction in bone fluoride concentration which was achieved was insufficient to allow CIRP to be used at a 2% level in rations for other than pigs produced for market.

Pulscher, Laura. "Investigating the Role of Toxicological, Nutritional, and Infectious Diseases in the Decline of the Critically Endangered Christmas Island Flying-Fox (Pteropus natalis)." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2021. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/26931.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the last 30 years, the Christmas Island flying-fox (CIFF; Pteropus natalis) has declined from approximately 6,000 individuals in the 1980’s to 3,800 individuals today. While the cause of contraction of the CIFF is not well understood, several disease related threats have been proposed. Potential diseases include intoxication with cadmium, nutritional diseases resulting from foraging on introduced plants, and diseases caused by infectious agents. The primary objective of this thesis was to understand disease related threats to and inform best practice management policies for conserving the CIFF population. In this body of work, I examine the utility of flying-foxes as bioindicators for metal pollutants and validate minimally-invasive sampling methods for screening flying-foxes for metal pollutants. Using these validated sampling methods, I identified increased cadmium concentrations in CIFFs. Urinalysis, biochemistry, and histopathology of a subset of CIFFs with paired cadmium data revealed proteinuria and glucosuria in two CIFFs and possible bone lesions in one CIFF suggesting cadmium exposure may have substantial implications for the health of the population. To explore nutritional diseases, I determined essential nutrients of native and introduced food plants consumed by the CIFF. Examination of nutrients revealed how the CIFF historically met their nutrient requirements. I then predicted how preferentially foraging on introduced plant species might alter nutritional requirements. Lastly, using multiplex serological and molecular assays I demonstrate the presence and maintenance of a Tioman-like and a severe acute respiratory syndrome-like coronavirus in the CIFF population. This has implications for understanding viral maintenance in small, geographically isolated bat populations. Together this work substantially contributes to our understanding of health-related threats to the CIFF and by extension other insular flying-foxes facing similar threats.

Musa, Mukhtar. "Growth variables, yield and nitrogen fixation of Bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea L. Verdc.) landraces at different rates of Christmas Island Rock Phosphate and rice biochar on tropical acid soils." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2017. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/39204/.

Full text
Abstract:
Bambara groundnut presents a great adaptation potential for mitigating climate change and as a potential alternative crop for the future in its production regions and beyond. Experiments were conducted at the Field Research Centre of the Crops for the Future and the Screenhouse of the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus to determine the growth variables, yield and nitrogen fixation of Bambara groundnut landraces at different rates of Christmas Island Rock Phosphate and rice biochar in the study area. The treatments consisted of three Bambara groundnut landraces [Ex-Sokoto, Kaaro and NN-1, for which two (Ex-Sokoto and Kaaro) were maintained after the first experiment], two biochar levels (0 and 10 t ha-1) and four levels of rock phosphate (0, 20, 40 and 60 kg P2O5 ha-1, the equivalent of 0, 555.6, 1111.1 and 1666.7 kg ha-1 Christmas Island Rock Phosphate). The treatments in experiment 1 and 3 were laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) replicated three times, whereas experiment 2 was laid out in a completely randomized design (CRD) replicated three times. For all the experiments, data were collected on growth, yield and nitrogen fixation of the crop. The results obtained revealed grain yield and N fixed ranging from 703-2256 kg ha-1 and 32-81 kg ha-1, respectively in experiment 1, 13.2-18.0 g plant-1 and 587-894 mg plant-1, respectively in experiment 2 and 891-1220 kg ha-1 and 101.6-103.4 kg ha-1, respectively in experiment 3, which are comparable to the yields obtained in other regions. Hence, Bambara groundnut can adapt to the tropical acid soil and the growing conditions in the study area. The two field experiments confirm Ex-Sokoto landrace to perform better in the study area in terms of yield than Kaaro landrace. Growing Bambara groundnut and returning the residues (haulm + shells) back to the soil resulted in net addition of N to the soil in the range of 1 to 25.6 kg ha-1, 150-261 mg plant-1 and 63.3-74.1 kg ha-1 observed in experiment 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Application of biochar increased the yield and nitrogen fixation of the crop in the study area. However, the effect of rock phosphate application on the yield and N fixation of the crop was only observed in the screenhouse studies and was optimum at the application rate of 40 kg P2O5 ha-1 (0.56 g kg-1 soil). Thus, Ex-Sokoto landrace could be recommended for grain yield in the study area. Application of biochar at 10 t ha-1 alone was optimum for increased yield of the crop. The implication of the study is that farmers in the study area could apply 10 t ha-1 of biochar on Ex-Sokoto landrace to enhance the yield of the crop.

McCallum, Richard John. "A sociological approach to Christian-Muslim relations." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10036/3129.

Abstract:
The increasingly politicized presence of Muslim communities in Britain today is raising issues not only for society in general but for other faith communities as well. Among these the Evangelical constituency, including the members of various Christian diasporas, is struggling to find a coherent response which is true to its Bible-based, activist roots. This thesis discusses the relationship of religion to the theoretical notion of the public sphere. Specifically it hypothesizes an Evangelical micro public sphere as the framework for an empirical exploration of the responses of British Evangelicals to Muslims since the events of 11th September 2001. It describes the formation, composition and discourse of this sphere drawing on data gathered from books, articles, lectures and interviews with key participants. The data reveal a marked tension, indeed a polarization, amongst Evangelicals, with an increasingly sharp disagreement between ‘confrontationalists’ and ‘conciliators’. A detailed analysis of the interaction of this sphere with Muslims, the national media and church leaders follows, leading to a concluding discussion of the future trajectory of the British Evangelical movement. Whilst it is still too early to say whether Evangelicalism will be strengthened or weakened, its encounter with Islam is likely to be an increasingly significant factor in British public life for the foreseeable future.

Joansson, Tordur. "Brethren in the Faeroes : an evangelical movement, its remarkable growth and lasting impact in a remote island community." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2012. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/3647/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis comprises results of broad research into the Brethren Movement in the Faeroes from 1865 to 2010, emphasising the disciplines Church History, Economic, Social and Cultural History, Cultural Studies and Missiology. The role of Brethren in the Nation Building Process is analysed as well as their pioneering work in the language struggle. Drawing on recent theories the Faeroese Brethren Movement is set in national and international perspective. Interviwes with many Brethren confirm the validity of the theories and give insight into (1) the developments until the 1960s, and (2) the period after. New aspects are brought to light, analysed and seen as part of the general development in the islands, and how Brethren have influenced the national, economic and cultural progresses. Nowhere has the Brethren Movement had such support as in the Faeroes where around 15 per cent of the polulation are members; elsewhere it is between a half and one per cent at most. Reasons for this are analysed as are Brethren theology and practices, attitudes and activism which have influences the broader community. The conclusion points out that the Faeroese Brethren movement has had much greater impact on the progress and developments that so far acknowledged. Self-government, self-financing and self-propagation of each assembly have influenced attitudes outside the movement, and Brethren attitudes, pioneering spirit and new ways of thinking have inspired others. The Brethren Movement was the first to break away from colonial power (the Danish State Church) and establish a Faeroese church. Tensions and changes within the movement in the early 21st century are discussed and the future of Brethren in the Faeroes is evaluated.

Fulbright, Timothy Calhoun. "The marching rule : a Christian revolution in the Solomon Islands." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/26471.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis reconsiders, in the light of new evidence recently made available, the socio-political movements subsumed as 'Marching Rule' that occurred in the British Solomon Islands Protectorate during the period 1939-53. Part I, historical, considers the development of these movements. The need for an indigenous political institution by means of which the differences between governed and governors might be resolved was first articulated by an Anglican missionary, Rev. Fall owes. He taught a new model for self-rule, and his ideas and inspiration were widely propagated through the central Solomons. World War II introduced a period of liminality in which local rivalries were submerged in new unities. The American servicemen legitimated a model of representative government, and inspired new religious and organizational ideas. Islanders then elaborated new governmental institutions within a global model of third-world development, bounded by Roosevelt' Four Freedoms, the ideology of Social Gospel ism and the ideal of reconciling pagan/Christian differences under 'Christian Kastom.' Part II, ethnographical, considers Malaitan Christianity, traditional leadership and fol1owership, and the impact of new kinds of leadership growing out of mission organization or imposed by the colonial government. The South Sea Evangelical Mission policy of complete indigenization required converts to wholly abandon former ways. The mission provided literacy, a key to a variety of modernizations the Bible, a complete 'handbook for living'; and the notion of an incipient social institution, a community of God that was expressed mystically but which was to be created on earth in advance of the millennium. Part III draws together these themes, considering key indigenous Marching Rule documents in a semiotic analysis. The war was interpreted as the end of the old dispensation, the Americans as bringing a new world order. The social program is addressed as a logos, and the new image of a moral man, the Christian American serviceman, emerges as the ethos of the movement. Its emotional foundation, pathos was based on ethnicity and masinoa. brotherhood, which was also the weakness of the Marching Rule. Rather than the form of 'irrational' Cargoism imputed by the administration of the time, Marching Rule emerges as a Christian revolution aimed not to forcibly overthrow the colonial administration, but at the creation of a means of talking with it and converting it to something new.

Caucanas, Rémi. "La dimension islamo-chrétienne du dialogue méditerranéen au XXe siècle." Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012AIXM3114/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Intercultural dialogue in the Mediterranean is undergoing hard times. However the religious dimension, connected and independent at the same time, offers another possible channel of dialogue in the Mediterranean relations. The transformations of the Christian perception of Islam started during the interwar period, then the practices of the dialogue between Christians and Muslims, in mainland France and beyond the Mediterranean Sea, gradually promote the Islamo-Christian dialogue on the Mediterranean forefront. In the 1960s, the Second Vatican Council stands out in this process. Trapped inside its own ambiguities and conditioned by Mediterranean geopolitical settings, the Islamo-Christian dialogue however enters a much more chaotic period punctuated both by symbolic acts for peace and identical tensions at the end of 1970s. Inspiring by multiple documentation sources, in particular by the collection of the Service des Relations avec l'Islam (SRI), the present work offers an historic overview of the actors, the stakes and the limits of the Islamo-Christian dialogue in the Mediterranean Sea throughout the 20th century. Historic reviews and the actors from Marseille illustrate such development

This dissertation will address the implementation of New Life Christian Academy (NLCA), a Christian Education School, produced out of New Life Deliverance Temple (NLDT), in St. Helena Island, South Carolina. The desire was to target students who have a desire in educational and spiritual achievements regardless of race, creed or religion. Parents who have become disillusioned with the Beaufort County public school system will be presented the progress of the current students at NLCA, who have transferred from the public school setting. The researcher founded the school by merging a homeschool run by a parent of NLDT and a new school which had never been operational. The advantage the researcher has concerning this project is that he was responsible for the grassroots implementation orchestrating every step from changing the county code allowing a school to locating modular buildings to house the school. NLDT is not considered a ‘mega ministry’ (2,000 or more membership) nor is the church located in a major metropolis, but on a dirt road in a rural section of St. Helena Island. Though the church possessed meager funds, this lack of capital did not prevent the pursuit of building a Christian school on church property. The researcher formed a board to assist in searching for rules and regulations so that the school will be in compliance. The first teacher hired by NLCA was Mrs. Mary Bolles who started her homeschool and was very well versed in Christian and secular education. NLCA has formed relationships between parent, teacher and student resulting in increased communication. The empirical data to assist in developing the foundation for the school will include: (a) Surveys conducted showing how the children have transitioned into the Christian/ Secular educational setting, (b) Showing how other Christian Schools operate within Beaufort Schools, (c) Data which will confirm the weaknesses of area county schools, and (d) surveys which will aid in satisfying the needs of students, staff and parents. Theologically, the Biblical basis for the school was discovered in Daniel the first chapter, showing four youths who had been forcibly removed from their native land and were successful in enemy territory, not compromising their Jewish values. The objective remains to parallel this Biblical past into a current motif which will allow the student to experience holistic curriculums of education, enabling them to meet life’s challenges, utilizing a Christian perspective.

Abstract:
The career of the Anglican scholar and bishop, Kenneth Cragg, focusses attention on the Christian understanding of other faiths in general and of Islam in particular. Cragg has been a leading exponent of a particular missionary approach to Islam, emphasizing that there is a 'mission to Islam' as much as a mission to Muslims. To this end he interprets Islam as pointing in its deepest meaning towards Christianity, a course which has aroused both admiration and opposition among Christians and Muslims alike. I attempt to show that his theology is strongly influenced by distinctive Anglican traditions, and nourished by one particular Arab Christian source. Cragg, however, resists any easy classification, and faces the accusation of theological evasiveness as well as hermeneutic sleight of hand. His writings show a remarkable consistency over thirty years and point to possibilities for reconciliation between deeply rooted religious antagonisms. A further significance of Cragg is his awareness of contemporary secularity in its interaction with and impact upon religious belief. Here again his conviction that the deepest convictions of unbelief are at heart religious needs to be tested. The central question is whether he illegitimately 'christianises' Islam, and by extension, other faiths and ideologies. His keyword is 'retrieval', but there are attitudes and beliefs that cannot be retrieved, only abandoned. Few would quarrel with the ethics he advocates, but the question remains whether his theological method can be accepted as valid.

Abstract:
In the development of Islam in India in the nineteenth century, the impact of the interaction between modernist Muslims and Christian administrators and missionaries can be seen in the writings of three Evangelical Christians on the role of the H&dotbelow;adith and the responses of Indian Muslims. The writings of Sir William Muir, an administrator in the Indian Civil Service, were characterized by European Orientalist methods of textual criticism coupled with the Evangelicals' rejection of Muh&dotbelow;ammad. In his response, Sir Sayyid Ah&dotbelow;mad Khan, an influential Muslim modernist, supported the traditional perception of the H&dotbelow;adith but also initiated a new critical approach. The writings of Thomas P. Hughes and Edward Sell, missionaries with the Church Missionary Society, tended to portray Islam as bound by this body of traditions, with the rejoinders of Sayyid Amir 'Ali and Chiragh 'Ali presenting an increasing rejection of the religious authority of the H&dotbelow;adith and an impassioned defense of Islam.

Abstract:
This study intends to examine a ninth century anti-Christian polemic work written by the great Muslim litterateur al-Jaḥiẓ. The historical background of the treatise is presented within the contexts of the early `Abbasid regime (750-900), the Christian communities of the time, the impact of the translation movement, the rise and development of polemic discourse between Muslims and Christians, and the life and works of al-Jaḥiẓ. The study provides the manuscript background of the letter along with a translation supplemented by the work of Joshua Finkel. The analysis of the work is limited to one section, which reflects al-Jaḥiẓ's most original contribution to antiChristian Muslim polemic. The actual analysis is focused thematically in order to better ascertain al-Jaḥiẓ's portrayal of Christians before his Muslim readers.

Abstract:
Much of Kenneth Cragg's writing is devoted to finding common ground between Christianity and Islam. A conservative Christian upbringing and a liberalising education based on the Enlightenment's values have contributed to this approach. Although Cragg often quotes the Bible, he has not written on Christian Scriptures to the same extent that he has on the Qur'an. His theology of Christian Scriptures has been affected by his engagement with the Qur'an. Cragg's traditional approach to the Bible has been reinforced by Muslims' view of their Scripture. To handle problems his traditional approach creates, Cragg filters Scriptures through a single model of revelation. Thus Scriptures are valued only for their contribution to this revelation. The result is that he unconsciously develops a canon within the canon. He solves problems with the Old Testament by handling it in a way similar to the Qur'an: both become a type of old testament to the New. In connection with the New Testament, 'hospitality' is key to Cragg's interpretation. Those parts which communicate his understanding of hospitality are one major, though often unarticulated, criterion for his canon within the canon. Cragg was one of the earliest to propose comparing Christ rather than the Bible to the Qur'an. His understanding of different scriptural issues between the Bible and the Qur'än has led him to see the comparison as one of revelation to revelation rather than Scripture to Scripture. Some of the difficulties that Cragg has had with the Bible as Scripture could be helped within the framework of his theology if he were to consider a variety of models, rather than a single one, for understanding Scriptures. His exegesis tends to be intuitive and at crucial points vulnerable to a more historical approach which is concerned to work with the meaning the author would have had for the text.

Krokus, Christian. "Faith Seeking Understanding: Louis Massignon's (1883-1962) Catholic Conversation with Islam." Thesis, Boston College, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/3699.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Frederick G. Lawrence
There are two aspects, and thus two aims, of the dissertation. Primarily, the dissertation is an interpretation. It seeks to understand Louis Massignon's understanding of Islam as it developed across three stages of his life and work. Secondarily, the dissertation is methodological. It takes Massignon's experience as a test-case and attempts to show that, as a possibly relevant hypothesis, his understanding of Islam warrants further attention by contemporary theologians working on Catholic-Islamic dialogue, Catholic-Islamic comparative theology, and Catholic theologies of Islam. The dissertation consists of six chapters. The first is an introduction to the questions and the relevant secondary literature. In it I establish the work of Massignon, primarily a scholar of Islam, on the relationship of Islam to the Catholic Church as theological, that is, as faith seeking understanding, and as conversational, that is, as constitutive communication. In Chapter Two, I establish Massignon's Catholic beliefs and examine his early and fairly traditional position on the question of Islam's relationship to the Catholic Church. I focus primarily on his apologetic treatise, Examen du &ldquoPr&eacutesent de l'homme lettr&eacute&rdquo par Abdallah ibn al-Torjoman (1917), in which he presents the contrast between the Christian and Islamic apologetics in stark terms, arguing for the superiority of the Christian position at every turn. I argue that the Examen should be read less as a condemnation of Islam than as an articulation of Massignon's Catholic beliefs. In Chapter Three, I examine &ldquoL'h&eacutegire d'Ismaël,&rdquo the second of Les trois pri&egraveres d'Abraham (1935), in which Massignon articulates what the secondary literature has called his five-point credo of Islam, namely, that the God of the Muslims is the same as the God of the Jews and Christians, the Qur'an is in some sense inspired and retains a conditional authority, Muhammad is sincere and can be understood as a negative prophet, Islam has a positive mission in the divine economy of salvation vis-à-vis the Church and Israel, and Arabic, the language of revelation in Islam, has a particular spiritual vocation. This represents the second stage of his life and work. In Chapter Four, after considering the possible (and likely) influence that Massignon's work exerted on the statements on Islam in Lumen Gentium and Nostra Aetate as proclaimed at the Second Vatican Council, I establish the bases for a nascent Massignonian Catholic theology of Islam, whereby the two religions enjoy a complementary relationship such that the Church knows and communicates explicitly what remains implicit in Islam, while Islam provokes the Church toward greater fidelity, charity, and hospitality. In Chapter Five, I turn to the third stage of Massignon's life and work in which he was increasingly concerned to establish practical means for encouraging Muslim-Catholic understanding. I focus on the Badaliya Annual Letters (1947-1962) in which he articulates the philosophy of the Badaliya prayer sodality that he co-founded for the purpose of interiorizing the rites of Islam and praying with and for Muslims. I focus on Massignon's understanding of substitute mysticism, which I argue is actually an expanded understanding of Redemption such that through participation in what Massignon calls the secret of history, and what Bernard Lonergan, S.J. would call the Law of the Cross, the saints of Christianity and Islam (and other religions) knowingly or unknowingly participate in the saving mission of Jesus Christ. At the conclusion to each main body chapter I suggest possible lessons that one might draw from Massignon's engagement with Islam at that particular stage, and in Chapter Six I summarize the findings and the limitations of the dissertation and suggest possible lines of further enquiry

Abstract:
This study is purposed to show how the Christian and Islamic concepts of monotheism are paradigms and thus, argues that the concept of paradigm, as a method of inquiry, can be a basis for analysing and exposing the conflictive differences and seeming similarities between the paradigms of Trinitarianism and Tawhidism.  Taking its ideas of the paradigms of Trinitarianism and Tawhidism from the Christian Trinity and Islamic Tawhid respectively, this study argues that the Christians and Muslims construct their identities from these paradigms as Trinitarian faith and Tawhidic faith respectively.  It investigates the fundamental principles of Islam and Christianity as constituting the belief formulae wrapped in the paradigms of Trinitarianism and Tawhidism. Therefore, analysing the issues of identity and alterity, the ideological oppositions, and orthodoxy claims intertwined in the paradigms of Trinitarianism and Tawhidism, this study examines the conflict of interpretations with reference to the nature of God, Christology/’Isalogy, Maryology and the lines of defining Christians and Muslims as ‘binary opposites’.  It further argues for a transformational intersubjectivity as a necessary condition to authentic communication between Christians and Muslims by analysing the paradigms of Trinitarianism and Tawhidism from the philosophies of dialogue. Using in places the framework of critical discourse analysis (CDA), this study analyses the empirical data of  A Common Word and reavels the underlying problems of ideologies, dichotomies, identity constructions and orthodoxy claims that are associated with the paradigms of Trinitarianism and Tawhidism.  This study observes that groups of Christians and Muslims, through various conferences and workshops were able to reach some compromise on interfaith matters.

Abstract:
John of Damascus (c. 650-750) is one of the best known Christian theologians of the eighth century. Most of his theological works have been the subject of prolonged and repeated scrutiny, with a recent renewal of interest in his thinking among scholars. Although little is known ofthe details of John's life, his well-attested upbringing in Damascus and later position as an administrator for thy Caliph placed him in a unique position to witness the early development of the religion today known as Islam. This thesis seeks to free earlier conceptions of John's treatise, and explain how John could understand Islam as a 'heresy', when such a term of application to Islam would not have occurred to most of his predecessors, peers, or successors in the Byzantine theological tradition, nor to modem scholars of heresy. By considering early Christian heresiology in its various forms and contexts, the first half of the thesis shows how it was possible for John to conceptualize Islam within the category of 'heresy', and that contrary to earlier assumptions, having done so did not require John to think of Islam as a deviant form of Christianity. Further earlier conceptions of the work are normally made against the background of false assumptions: that a highly developed Islam existed in the eighth century when John wrote his treatise and that he considered Islam a 'Christian heresy'. By reconsidering his text, and situating John in his historical and theological context, it is possible to show that we are not in a position to say with certainty how accurate John was in his observations. At the same time, there is no reason to consider his treatise other than an accurate historical reflection of events as he perceived them in his time. 11
