Abstract:

Zusammenfassung Erst ganz am Ende der Petrusakten (MartPetr 12/ActPetr 41) tritt Kaiser Nero in der Erzählung vom Martyrium des Petrus auf. Er kommt aber zu spät, das Martyrium fand ohne ihn statt, und so nimmt sich seine Erwähnung am Ende der Erzählung etwas seltsam aus. Dieser Beitrag bietet dafür eine Deutung, die den kurzen Hinweis auf Nero im Kontext der christlichen und römischen Erinnerung an Nero versteht, den malus princeps, der bald auch als der erste Christenverfolger ins Gedächtnis einging. Anscheinend konnten christliche Apologeten aus der Erinnerung an Repressalien unter Nero Kapital schlagen, indem sie ihre eigene Bewegung auf eine Stufe mit der römischen Elite stellten, die bereits eine düstere Erinnerung an Nero als Tyrann kultiviert hatte.

Abstract:

The article examines the historiography of the pontificate of Pope Pius XII, especially the phase that fell during the Second World War. Accusations that the Pope had not publicly condemned the crimes of Fascism and Nazism emerged in Soviet historiography shortly after the war and were faintly echoed by radical historiography in European countries. At the same time, an apologetic trend emerges in historiography. The situation changed dramatically with the publication and production of the play Der Stellvertreter. Ein christliches Trauerspiel (The Deputy, A Christian Tragedy also published in English as The Representative) by the German playwright Rolf Hochhuth, in which the Pope is accused of remaining silent in the face of the Nazi crimes. It marked the beginning of a critical trend in historiography. In historiography, a heated debate between the critical and apologetic ‘schools’ has been termed the “Pius War”. The revival of the critical movement has usually been associated with various politicised events such as the beatification process of Pius XII at the turn of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and a new step in that direction in 2009, namely the declaration of Pius XII venerable by Pope Benedict XVI, etc. At the same time, the introduction of new archival documents into scholarly discourse (in particular, the opening for academic examination of the collections of Pius XI and Pius XII in the Vatican Archives) has led to an enormous expansion and diversification of the source base. Studies have also demonstrated the need for a more active exploration and contextualisation of the policies of the Holy See during the war years. All this contributes to a more balanced and objective appraisal of these matters on the part of historians and political scientists.

Abstract:

The paper explores the Christian-intoned philosophical aesthetics of the figurative arts during the silver age of Russian culture. In this period, which covers the second half of the nineteenth and the first two decades of the twentieth century, Russia's speculative thought, based on the Orthodox patristic and philosophical idealism, promoted the original religious philosophy, which highly valorized the importance of comprehensive gnoseology and ontology of "total-unity", true knowledge sought only through the absolute - an ideal which in itself synthesizes a real beauty, truth and goodness. That is why the Christian fine arts and aesthetics of this period in Russia were built only as an organic segment of a holistically interpreted philosophy of life, recapitulated by its essential principle - Christ. In order to systematize various aspirations, ideas and concepts of this artistic aesthetics, the paper singles out and explains three major themes that are intertwined. These are: the beauty (integral with goodness and truth), Christlike according to Dostoevsky, ideal-real according to Soloviev; theurgical creation, viewed both as artistic (free and transformative) and as an ascetic likeness to God; and the icon, which - through a philosophical-theological interpretation of an apophatic-kataphatic antinomy, reverse perspective and symbolism - integrates the issue of beauty and creativity into a common discourse, entering the Orthodox apologetic front before western art and culture, from the renaissance to the modern digital age.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNGDie frühchristlichen Apologeten verteidigten in ihren Schriften das Christentum gegen die heidnischen Vorwürfe, indem sie unter anderem immer wieder auf die Vorzüglichkeit der christlichen Ethik hinwiesen, die sich im alltäglichen Leben der Christen manifestierte. Die Apologeten hätten nicht auf diese Argumentation zurückgegriffen, wenn sie darin nicht Anknüpfungspunkte zu ihrer nichtchristlichen Umwelt gesehen hätten. Dafür übernahmen sie die unterschiedlichsten philosophischen Lehrmeinungen und passten sie ihren argumentativen Bedürfnissen an. Ein Blick auf die Moralvorstellungen innerhalb der nichtchristlichen Gesellschaft, wie sie von der Philosophie, der Schulbildung und auch im paganen Kult verbreitet wurden, bildet die Grundlage für einen Vergleich mit den apologetischen Argumentationslinien und ermöglicht Rückschlüsse auf die Reichweite der apologetischen Argumente. Bei den philosophisch gebildeten Lesern schien die christliche Moral aber weniger mit theoretischen Betrachtungen überzeugen zu können als mit den praktischen Erfolgen der christlichen Lehre bei Menschen aller Bildungsschichten.
