Abstract:
This chapter describes ways Palestinian Christians in Bethlehem use Christmas music to highlight the contrast between the former peaceful “little town” in the carol and the current situation of its population under Israeli occupation. An annual Christmas event is staged as a protest, but promotes nonviolent resistance to occupying forces. Organizers provide an opportunity for the expression of shared feelings of belonging and loss among local Palestinians, but are keenly aware that such emotivity can generate conflict and aggression. For this reason, the music at the festival is performed rather than participatory, and features lyrics celebrating nonviolence and peace, promoted as both Christian and universal moral values, alongside allusions to lost territories and the restrictions imposed by Israeli authorities. By drawing on repertoires of wide dissemination across the Christian world on a main Christian holiday, the event also draws international attention to the Palestinian cause.

Abstract:
This book has demonstrated the absence of studies of theological tradition that might have built on the substantial agreement about tradition, which has come to exist between the Christian churches. It has shown the considerable help offered by sociologists to theologians who want to explore the nature and function of tradition. Any theology of tradition should attend to the vast variety of Christian traditions. While Scripture enjoys an essential place in evaluating traditions, Christians who discern traditions should be open to wider criteria, including those supplied by the secular world. At the heart of all particular traditions is the risen Christ, the Tradition (singular and in upper case) made present by the Holy Spirit, the Christus praesens who is not a reality which Christians possess but the person by whom they are possessed.

Abstract:
This book is the first systematic discussion of the bodhisattva path in Māhayāna Buddhism from the perspective of Christian comparative theology. With the increasing interest and participation of Christians in Buddhist practice, many are seeking a deeper exploration of this topic, and of the way the two traditions and their teachings might interface. Crucified Wisdom provides important scholarly background material for this discussion, as well as a constructive proposal for Christian engagement. The text combines a rich exposition of the bodhisattva path with detailed reflection on it in connection with specific Christian convictions. The description of bodhisattva teachings centers on Śāntideva’s classic work the Bodicaryāvatāra and its interpretation by Tibetan commentators. The book argues that Christian theology can take direct instruction from Buddhism in three respects: developing an understanding of a “no-self” dimension in all creatures, recognizing an unvarying nondual dimension of divine immanence in the world, and appreciating that both of these are constituent dimensions in Christ’s incarnation and human redemption. The writer argues that Christians rightly remain committed to the value of novelty in history, the enduring significance of human persons, and the Trinitarian reality of God. A notable feature of the book is its exploration of the tensions around the crucifixion of Jesus in Buddhist-Christian interpretation. This work will be of particular value for those interested in “dual belonging” in connection to these traditions.

Abstract:
Chapter 3 treats Augustine’s preaching on prayer in his Enarrationes in Psalmos, focusing on his celebrated totus Christus doctrine, and his commentary on Galatians, whose original audience was his monastic brethren. The analysis of Chapter 3 highlights two important developments. First, Augustine begins to work out his doctrine of the totus Christus through the interpretation of Christ’s cry of dereliction, a quotation from Psalm 21:1. This begins to help Augustine make sense of the relationship between the life of Christ and the Christian life. And second, in his commentary on Galatians, Augustine queries the process of ‘putting on’ Christ (induere). In a final section, this chapter provides a focused analysis of Augustine’s commentary on Psalms 85 and 132.
