Abstract:
Abstract The ecological discourses in China include the government’s political propaganda and the voices based on the traditional Chinese culture, especially Confucianism, Buddhism and Daoism. Furthermore, there are also public discourses on ecological issues from the environmental scientists and/or activists, who may adhere to neither the political party line nor any traditional Chinese religious/philosophical perspectives. As such, when Chinese Christians attempt to address ecological issues, they have to respond to these divergent voices in the public sphere. This article reviews the Chinese Christian ecological discourses from the perspective of a public theology. It will examine whether, and how, they respond to the non-Christian voices, and analyze how they exhibit different approaches to public theology. It will further explore whether, and how, Chinese Christian ecological discourses could benefit from Christian discourses in other contexts, and may in return contribute to the global development of an ecological theology as a public discourse.

Abstract:
AbstractThis essay examines how twelfth-century Christian Hebraism, as an aspect of biblical exegesis, contributed to producing Christian knowledge of the Jewish Other. It argues that Christian Hebraism was symptomatic of strategies central to the formation of Christian identity, a process to which Jews were essential not only as foils, but as collaborators. An alternative approach to Christian Hebraism, its contributions to a volatile Christian identity, and its status as both a cause and an effect of changing relations between Jews and Christians in the period, is demonstrated by the application of postcolonial discourse analysis to the psalms commentary by Herbert of Bosham.

Abstract:
Why does God call people to be Christians? After considering the different answers that people give to this question, Karl Barth offers his own view of what it means to be a Christian. In refuting many of the common assumptions about this, including views that God calls people to live moral lives or to evangelise, Barth looks back to a more ‘New Testament’ approach to the matter, one that regards the task of evangelism to be at the very heart of being a Christian and not just something they do.

This paper presents some of the important issues pertaining to the role of the (Hebrew) Bible in Jewish–Christian dialogue, some of the problems arising around it, and suggests some solutions to how Jews and Christians can share this corpus without forcing Christian readers to give up their unique perspective on the text or justifying reading practices in which Jews lose a full claim on the text.

Abstract:
This essay proposes that the Reformed theology of ordinary life has promising principles that can be applied to the recent challenges of the digital age. It first examines how contemporary scholars have grappled with the challenges posed by virtual life, highlighting their Advantages and disadvantages. Then, it suggests that the Reformed attitude for sanctifying ordinary life leads Christians inevitably to embrace discipline in their use of technology. The author recommends digital resistance and digital intentionality as judicious parameters for Christian engagement in a digital age. Manohar, Christina. "Spirit Christology : an Indian Christian perspective." Thesis, University of Gloucestershire, 2007. http://eprints.glos.ac.uk/3165/.

Full text
Abstract:
The theologians of the early church sought to interpret the Christian gospel in the categories of `Mediterranean antiquity. ' The classical two-nature model of Christology has a Greek philosophical underpinning that shapes the ontological construction of the deity and humanity of Jesus Christ. Logos Christology is primarily a reflection on the hypostatic union of the Logos with the human reality of Jesus that leaves little place for a consideration of Jesus' relation to the Holy Spirit. In the light of such a limitation in classical Christology, a study of the relationship between Christology and pneumatology becomes very significant. In this regard, the recent resurgence of Spirit Christology in the West adds a new dimension to contemporary Christological reflection. The theologians who are engaged in this pursuit are of the view that Christological reflection is incomplete without reflecting upon pneumatology and vice versa. This study identifies in particular at least three approaches in the contemporary European Spirit Christologies, namely, reconstruction, replacement and complementary approaches. Norman Hook attempts to reconstruct Christ, Spirit and the Trinity from the perspective of the Hebrew understanding of the Spirit. G. W. H. Lampe, by using the symbol God as Spirit replaces Logos Christology with a Spirit Christology. Jürgen Moltmann, John D. Zizioulas and David Coffey seek ways to complement Logos Christology with Spirit Christology. While not denying the contributions of reconstruction and replacement approaches, this study adopts the complementary approach and shows that Spirit Christology not only enriches systematic theology but also is relevant to an Indian context. This is done by bringing the insights of two Indian theologians Pandipeddi Chenchiah and Swami Abhishiktänanda, who emphasise the centrality of the Spirit, in interaction with the strengths of Spirit Christology. The study ends in offering a chapter on `understanding Jesus Christ in India' using the Hindu concepts of Spirit that are expressed in the terms such as atman, antaryämin, Sakti and änanda. Drawing on some of the resources of Spirit Christology, it is argued that these concepts can explicate, illuminate and evoke some latent aspects of Christology.

Zandman, Herm Jan Gerhard. "Physical education in holistic Christian education : a Christian ethical perspective / Zandman, Herm J.G." Thesis, North-West University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/824.

Full text
Abstract:
The historical-literary phenomena and all the facets of research have been carefully tested against Biblical principles and indices. During the journey through historical-literary material and in the quantitative and qualitative research that has been undertaken, the striving has continuously been to test each phenomenon, event and research data against the fundamental, Biblical principles that were enumerated in the second chapter, i.e. . The Bible makes a clear case that the whole person needs to develop and be developed for holy service; . God Himself is interested in the body as part of the entirety of the person He created and demonstrates and teaches through His Word against dualism; . Included in the sixth commandment regarding murder is the principle that one should not harm one's own body in any way, but rather nourish it (Vorster, 2004:123). . Christ and the apostles demonstrate in many ways the necessity to serve God as a whole person; . To be fit for service includes being fit to live before God as a well-balanced spiritual, emotional, cerebral and physical being; . Man's fallen-ness has led to imbalance, causing disfuntionality in stewardship and in training for stewardship; . Physical education, as declared in the central theoretical argument and as reasoned throughout the thesis on the basis of Biblical-ethical principles, should be regarded as essential to development of vicegerents under Christ.

Carr, Bridget. "No grey areas : a rural fundamentalist Christian perspective." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Religious Studies, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/8120.

Full text
Abstract:
An investigation into the operation of a small rural Fundamentalist Christian Fellowship is the subject of the following thesis. This field research was undertaken through observing the group for three months by attending Sunday Fellowship meetings. At the completion of that period, eight members were interviewed. Informal discussions during that time, involving approximately thirty members, added to the information accumulated. Through observation it became apparent this group originated because of their dissatisfaction with the local Christian church. This break-away Fellowship sought to form a version of Christianity that was unstructured, flexible, informal and lacking in hierarchy. As previous research had been carried out with this group, information that might otherwise have remained hidden, such as a disfellowshipped couple, became available. The scope of this thesis will include: the development of the group, observation of a typical Fellowship meeting, investigations into their 'Biblically-based' attitude and how this related to their everyday existence, as well as information concerning a rift within the Fellowship that resulted in the expulsion of two of its members. This research led to the conclusion that although the Fellowship fulfilled a desired need within the group, its future seemed uncertain, due in part to the very aims it sought to achieve. The spiritual aspect of this Christian Fellowship was willing and strong but the physical composition, the informal hierarchical structure and format, was weak, and so in the final analysis, I consider this and similar Fellowships will have a finite, continually changing existence. All names and places have been changed, at the request of those involved, to protect the group concerned.
