Abstract:
In his famous speech of 1714, Peter I depicts Europe as a single organism with Greece as its heart: it is from here that “the sciences,” like blood, once flowed and along the homeward path they run, having first gained a firm foothold in Russia. The18th century perceived this comparison as a real political program: the similarity was supposed to imply that the European culture should be brought back to Greece on Russian bayonets. This rendering was born with the utopian “Greek project” of Catherine II and lasted until the end of the century. Neither confirming nor contradicting it, the 19th century prefers to see in Peter’s words pride in the successes of the Russian enlightenment which was introduced during the two decades of his reformist activity. The 20th century, burdened with the baggage of literary associations, interprets this image as commonplace for baroque rhetoric, a routine metaphor for translatio studii with little or no actual political meaning. Undoubtedly authentic, transmitted by several early witnesses, the speech became part of the ‘Petrine myth,’ but, surprisingly enough, was never the subject of critical source analysis. Thus, its historical context and intended meaning remained largely obscured. A comparative study leads to the conclusion that all its renderings originated from a common literary source. The archetypal version was that of F. Chr. Weber, while the other variants are more or less remote copies containing deliberate amendments. A closer look at the relevant paragraphs of Weber’s notes reveals the true pathos of the speech. Peter’s rhetoric, prompted by his immediate concerns, boils down to an admiration for the culture of Western Europeans. The historical context clarifies what motivates the central image of the simile — Greece as the heart of European enlightenment: shortly before the episode, the tsar was treated to a Greek speech delivered by the six-year-old son of the learned Moldavian prince Dimitrie Cantemir who was one of Peter’s principal allies.

Abstract:
The paper presents the life and work of Eugene of Savoy, a famous military leader at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, whose achivements left a mark in the history of numerous countries, from Austria, through Germany, Italy and France, to Serbia. The biography of Prince Eugene has a mutinational, “pan-European” char- acter, bearing in mind that he came from an Italian family (princes of Savoy), that he was raised in the environment of the French royal court, and that he served three Habsburg emperors (Leopold I, Joseph I and Charles VI). Napoleon considered Eugene one of the seven greatest commanders of history. The article contains presentation of young years and military career of Prince Eugene, especially during the Great Turkish war (1683-1699) and after, includin presantation of crucial battles of Zenta (1687), Petrowaradin (1716) and Belgrade (1717). The Prince’s fame was secured with his decisive victory against the Ottomans at the Battle of Zenta in 1697, earning him Europe-wide fame. The Battle of Zenta proved to be the decisive victory in the long war against the Turks. Renewed hostilities against the Ottomans in the Austro-Turkish War consolidated his reputation, with victories at the battles of Petrovaradin (1716), and the decisive encounter at Belgrade (1717). Of all Eugene’s wars this was the one in which he exercised most direct control; it was also a war which, for the most part, Austria fought and won on her own. The war had dispelled the immediate Turkish threat to Hungary and was a triumph for the Empire and for Eugene personally. In the period after the Second World War, during the period of growing popularity of European integration and cooperation, as well as supranational ideas, there was a reinterpretation of the historical role of Eugene Savoy as an archetypal character “pan-European”, “hero of European culture”, “builder of Europe”. The period of the Austro-Turkish wars in which Prince Evgenije participated and his great victories over the Turks had an exceptional influence and significance on the history of the Serbian people (Great Migration 1690). A large number of Serbs also took part in the campaigns and battles led by Eugene of Savoy.

Abstract:
This study utilizes methods to follow a measles epidemic in New France, where cause of death information is lacking. We fit a series of splines to estimate mortality and trace the origin, spread, duration and severity of the epidemic, which originated in the region of Montreal during the 2nd quarter of 1714. By the 3rd quarter, the epidemic had spread throughout the colony and had run its course by the second quarter of 1715. Overall, the measles death rate was 52.8 per 1,000 for children under age 15 and females were more likely than males to have died from the virus.

Abstract:
A comparison of pyrolysis characteristics and gas product evolution of biochar with different packing arrangements was investigated. Pyrolysis properties and released gas products of rice husk char were obtained by particles in two different modes of packing. The results of the combustion characteristics of rice husk/char showed that the maximum pyrolysis rate of the rice husk decreased and the pyrolysis curve shifted to higher temperatures when the biomass was covered by Al2O3. The volatilization analysis of char from the covered biomass had a larger characteristic index and a lower activation energy. The 2D Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) results showed that layering hindered gaseous products from being released during rice husk pyrolysis, and there was no obvious release peak of C=O-containing organic matter. The 3D FTIR results showed that gaseous product absorption peak of solid product char pyrolysis gradually decreased while the rice husk conversion rate increased. The amount of H2O, CO2, CO, CH4, and C=O-containing organic components released during combustion of pyrolyzed char when blended with Al2O3 decreased gradually. However, the pyrolysis gaseous product release was increased by the layering procedure.

Abstract:
Earthwork associated with highway construction provides an opportunity for high-volume reuse of excess system sands (ESS) discarded by the foundry industry. California bearing ratio (CBR), unconfined compressive strength, and resilient modulus tests were conducted on 13 ESS, one base sand, and two reference materials. Tests were conducted on specimens prepared dry of optimum, wet of optimum, and at optimum water content with standard and modified Proctor compaction effort. Results of these tests were used to identify characteristic engineering properties of ESS, appropriate compaction conditions for ESS when used as subbase, and empirical equations that can be used to predict the engineering properties of ESS based on index properties. Results of the tests indicate that ESS classify as SP, SM, or SP-SM (A-2-4 or A-3 in AASHTO) and should be compacted dry or at optimum water content and, if possible, with higher compactive effort. The CBR of the ESS ranged from 4 to 40 and averaged 20 when compacted with standard effort at optimum water content. Swell during the soaking portion of the CBR tests was small for all ESS. ESS compacted at optimum water content with standard effort had unconfined compressive strengths ranging from 71 to 190 kPa. Resilient moduli of the ESS were similar to that of a reference subbase material but smaller than a reference base material. A power function model in terms of bulk stress described resilient moduli of the ESS well.

Abstract:
The purpose of this project was to address the lack of scholarship on mid-twentieth century Haitian history and illustrate its significance. It employs primary and secondary sources in shaping a Gramscian historical narrative. Ideas of "everyday resistance" and internal and external politics are also be of significance to this work. In mid-twentieth century Haiti, the black-nationalist rhetoric of noirisme became the dominant political ideology. Blackness was amorphous and its application to politics was dependent upon class. In proclaiming blackness the average Haitian was attacking the class schism that beleaguered the island. Yet for the elite noirismewas a conduit to modernity and a useful tool for muting the division between rich and poor. With the election of Dumarsais Estimé in 1946, dialogue between the U.S. government, the Haitian elite, and the masses, relative to definitions of modernity played out within the new political reality of noirisme.

Abstract:
This study deals with a Parisian notary who was from tours and who had been practicing for twenty years. The analysis of this notary's social environment introduces us in the world of the bourgeoisie and the notary profession in Paris. It enables us to understand the conditions of integration of provincial French peoples into the Paris of the second half of the 17th c. It also gives us the chance to study the profession of notary closely. The second part is a study of the clients of this notary. We analyse the original characteristics proper to this case by distinguishing between occasional and regular clients and by classifying them according to their places of origin, their sex and their profession. A chapter is devoted to study of some important clients. Finally, a third part deals with the practice of the notary profession and the importance of its archives as a source of the study of the economic and social situation in those days

Abstract:
The prevailing historical narrative of the collapse of Louis XIV's naval power has emphasised the importance of political decision-making, either in the strategic shifts between the guerre d'escadre and the guerre de course, or in the decision to reduce the naval budget in the midst of war in 1694 and 1707. As France faced massive financial overextension and an increasing need to fight for territorial survival in the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714), it was inevitable that Louis XIV's government would fund its armies in preference to its naval capabilities. However, a shift in priorities at Versailles does not provide a full explanation for the navy's decline. Recent works emphasise the effectiveness of the state's revenue-raising capabilities and the importance of the fiscal intermediaries who financed royal expenditure. Yet, these connections between French naval power and Louis XIV's fiscal capabilities remain only partially explored and this thesis presents a fresh examination of the navy's financing arrangements. It is argued that the difficulties that Louis XIV faced in maintaining the fleet were rooted in a unique set of issues embedded in the navy's financing mechanism and the way it was managed. The problem was four-fold: the naval ministry consistently overspent its allocated funds; the navy's budget was increasingly underfunded as a result of the finance ministry's mismanagement and also of wider fiscal instability; the naval treasury was not fit-for-purpose since the navy's fiscal intermediaries, the trésoriers généraux de la Marine, lacked the capacity to sustain costly levels of borrowing; and the crown failed to meet the organisational challenges of war by not controlling spending and the activities of the trésoriers. These structural issues surfaced internally early in the war and would be progressively and disastrously exposed by the loss of liquidity and the mounting debts that affected France in the 1700s.

CHF and hMNB are significantly higher and occur at lower ΔTsat than has been reported on plane, macro-, micro- and nano-structured surfaces. CHF increases linearly 4.5%/K, while hMNB, occurring at end of the fully developed nucleate boiling region, decreases and corresponding ΔTsat increases with increased subcooling. For the 171 μm-thick surface: CHFsat of 27.8 W/cm2 increases to 63.25 W/cm2 at ΔTsub = 30 K, while saturation hMNB of 13.5 W/cm2.K decreases to 12.7 W/cm2.K at 30 K subcooling. ΔTsat at hMNB and CHF increases from 2.0 K and 2.16 K at saturation to 4.2 and 6.42 K at 30 K subcooling.

Abstract:
A small scale model (length 1710 mm) of General Motor SUV was built and tested in the wind tunnel for expected wind conditions and road clearance. Two passive devices, rear screen which is plate behind the car and rear fairing where the end of the car is aerodynamically extended, were incorporated in the model and tested in the wind tunnel for different wind conditions. The conclusion is that rear screen could reduce drag up to 6.5% and rear fairing can reduce the drag by 26%. There were additional tests for front edging and rear vortex generators. The results for drag reduction were mixed. It should be noted that there are aesthetic and practical considerations that may allow only partial implementation of these or any drag reduction options.

Abstract:
Introduction: The aging process can result in the decline of cognitive function. Some factors may be beneficial for cognitive functioning in aging, such as physical activity. Objective: To analyze the relationship between physical activity and cognitive performance in community-dwelling older adults. Methods: Cross-sectional and quantitative study, carried out in 2018/2019, with 491 older adults (≥60 years), registered in Primary Healthcare Units in Três Lagoas-MS. The older adults were divided into two groups: physically active (>150 minutes of moderate physical activity or >75 minutes of vigorous activity/week - n=320) and inactive (n=171), according to the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was also applied. T and chi-square tests were used to analyze the relationship between variables. Results: The physically active group were mostly women (60.8%), with an average of 69.7±6.9 years of age and 4.2±3.5 years of schooling. In the inactive group, the majority were women (59.7%), with 71.4±8.2 years of age and 4.0±4.2 of schooling. The groups were similar in terms of sex and education, but the inactive group was older (p=0.029). The active older adults had a mean of 23.7±3.8 points in the MMSE, and the inactive group, 21.9±4.6, with a significant difference (p <0.000), ndicating that the active group had a better cognitive performance. Conclusion: There is a relationship between being physically active and having a better cognitive performance. Physical activity in old age is related to benefits in several areas and must be incorporated into public health promotion and disease prevention policies.
