Abstract:

"Trans-Pacific variation in outcomes for men treated with primary androgen deprivation therapy for localized prostate cancer." Journal of Clinical Oncology 31, no. 6_suppl (February 20, 2013): 92. http://dx.doi.org/10.1200/jco.2013.31.6_suppl.92.

Abstract:
92 Background: Primary androgen deprivation therapy (PADT) is endorsed as an option for monotherapy for localized prostate cancer by guidelines in Asia but not in the United States (US) or Europe. PADT use is common, however, in both the US and Japan. Prior studies on either side of the Pacific have reported disparate outcomes for PADT; we aimed to explore these differences in a direct comparison study. Methods: Data were drawn from the US community-based CaPSURE registry and from J-CaP, comprising men in Japan treated with PADT. 1934 men treated with PADT were included from CaPSURE, and 16,300 treated in J-CaP. Risk adjustment was based on the validated Japan Cancer of the Prostate Risk Assessment (J-CAPRA) score. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to assess prostate cancer-specific mortality (CSM), adjusting for age, J-CAPRA, year of diagnosis, and treatment type (combined androgen blockade [CAB] vs. castration (medical or surgical) monotherapy). Results: Men treated with PADT in J-CaP were older than those in CaPSURE (mean age 75.0 vs. 72.7, p<0.001), and had higher risk disease (mean J-CAPRA score 3.0 vs. 2.1, p<0.001). They were more likely to be treated with CAB: 67.1% vs. 44.5% (p<0.001). In the Cox model, the hazard ratio (HR) for PCSM was 0.31 for J-CaP compared to CaPSURE, 95% CI 0.25–0.40. In J-CaP, CAB improved survival compared to castration alone (HR 0.81, 95% CI 0.66–1.0), but this effect was not observed in CaPSURE (HR 0.96, 95% CI 0.69–1.34). For all-cause mortality, the HR for J-CaP was 0.27 (95% CI 0.24–0.30). Conclusions: Adjusting for multiple factors including disease risk and type of androgen ablation, men treated with PADT in Japan compared to the US have more than 3-fold lower CSM and 4-fold better overall survival. CAB improved outcomes compared to castration alone in J-CaP but not in CaPSURE. These findings support existing guidelines both encouraging PADT in Asia and discouraging its use in the West. The reasons for these substantial differences likely include both genetic and dietary/environmental factors, as well as potential confounding variables such as comorbidities. Such factors may explain varying biology of prostate cancer on both sides of the Pacific.

Abstract:
Purpose Prostate cancer epidemiology has been marked overall by a downward risk migration over time. However, in some populations, both in the United States and abroad, many men are still diagnosed with high-risk and/or advanced disease. Primary androgen deprivation therapy (PADT) is frequently offered to these patients, and disease risk prediction is not well-established in this context. We compared risk features between large disease registries from the United States and Japan, and aimed to build and validate a risk prediction model applicable to PADT patients. Methods Data were analyzed from 13,740 men in the United States community-based Cancer of the Prostate Strategic Urologic Research Endeavor (CaPSURE) registry and 19,265 men in the Japan Study Group of Prostate Cancer (J-CaP) database, a national Japanese registry of men receiving androgen deprivation therapy. Risk distribution was compared between the two datasets using three well-described multivariable instruments. A novel instrument (Japan Cancer of the Prostate Risk Assessment [J-CAPRA]) was designed and validated to be specifically applicable to PADT patients, and more relevant to high-risk patients than existing instruments. Results J-CaP patients are more likely than CaPSURE patients to be diagnosed with high-risk features; 43% of J-CaP versus 5% of CaPSURE patients had locally advanced or metastatic disease that could not be stratified with the standard risk assessment tools. J-CAPRA—scored 0 to 12 based on Gleason score, prostate-specific antigen level, and clinical stage—predicts progression-free survival among PADT patients in J-CaP with a c-index of 0.71, and cancer-specific survival among PADT patients in CaPSURE with a c-index of 0.84. Conclusion The novel J-CAPRA is the first risk instrument developed and validated for patients undergoing PADT. It is applicable to those with both localized and advanced disease, and performs well in diverse populations.

Abstract:
A commercially available matt black paint is used as the primary component of a composite coating for low-temperature flat collector systems. The composite coating is composed of the paint, carbon black powder (CBP) and lithium metal oxide (LMO) powder. The CBP and LMO powders are added on the top of the primary paint to improve the solar-thermal conversion characteristics of the collector. The optical and solar-thermal conversion characteristics of these coatings are investigated by means of optical microscopy, optical spectrophotometry, total reflectance measurement, and the measurement of the maximum collector temperature. Results show that the solar-thermal conversion response (maximum temperature) of the collector plate can be improved with the addition of the CBP and LMO powder at low concentrations. This is been demonstrated and discussed in this report. The coatings prepared in the present work can easily be applied on the collector surface and exhibit competing characteristics to other coatings.

Abstract:
La Terapia Psicoanalitica infantile breve (PaCT) prevede 20-25 sedute psicoterapeutiche condotte in diversi setting (genitori e bambino insieme; bambino e genitori separatamente). Abstract:
An easy approach to fabricating carbon fiber paper (CFP) based electrodes has been developed. This method can be mainly divided into two steps, for which the mixture of cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was first deposited on the surface of carbon fiber paper through a vacuum filtration device followed by immersing the hybrid paper into concentrated aniline solution to polymerize polyaniline (PANI). Compared to carbon fiber paper, the acid-treated carbon fiber paper (A-CFP)-based electrode provides more active sites, which are beneficial for the polymerization of polyaniline. The mixture of CNFs and CNTs could coat on the A-CFP by vacuum-filtration due to the high hydrophilicity of A-CFP improved by acid-treatment. PANI with different polymerization time was in-situ synthesized on the surface of the hybrid paper to form a three-dimensional cross-linked structure that greatly enhanced the electrochemical performance of the electrode by improving high capacitance, high rate-capability, and long cycle-life. Moreover, the assembled symmetrical supercapacitor showed a high area capacitance of 626 mF·cm−2 and an energy density of 87 µWh·cm−2. This facile, easy performed, and low-cost strategy may provide a feasible method for the production of supercapacitor electrodes.

Abstract:
The three-dimensional (3D) conductive network structures formed by barium titanate/carbon nanotubes incorporated polyaniline were favorable for strengthening electromagnetic absorption capability. Herein, an easy and flexible method consisting of sol-gel technique, in situ polymerization, and subsequent mechanical method have been developed to prepare the barium titanate/carbon nanotubes incorporated polyaniline (CNTs/BaTiO3/PANI or CBP) ternary composites. The dielectric properties and microwave absorption properties of CNTs/BaTiO3/PANI composites were investigated in the frequency range of 2–18 GHz by vector network analyzer. Interestingly, it is found that the CNTs/BaTiO3/PANI composites with 3D conductive network structures presented outstanding electromagnetic absorption properties, which may be attributed to the high impedance matching behavior and improved dielectric loss ability and novel synergistic effect. Additionally, it also can be supposed that the “geometrical effect” of composite was more beneficial to absorbing the incident electromagnetic wave. The CNTs/BaTiO3/PANI composite (the mass ratio of CNTs/BaTiO3to PANI is 2 : 3) exhibits the best microwave absorption properties, of which the minimum reflection loss value can reach −30.9 dB at 8 GHz and the absorption bandwidth with a reflection loss blew −10 dB ranges from 7.5 to 10.2 GHz.

When will solidarity, which emerges spontaneously from the fear of spillovers, be reinforced through contracting? The optimal pact between countries that differ substantially in their probability of distress is a simple debt contract with market financing, a borrowing cap, but no joint liability. While joint liability augments total surplus, the borrowing country cannot compensate the deep-pocket guarantor. By contrast, the optimal pact between two countries symmetrically exposed to shocks with an arbitrary correlation is a simple debt contract with joint liability, provided that shocks are sufficiently independent, spillovers sufficiently large, liquidity needs moderate, and available sanctions sufficiently tough. Abstract:
Biofouling is an inevitable problem that occurs continually on marine fishing vessels and other small crafts. The nature of the antifouling (AF) coatings used to prevent biofouling on these small vessels is of great environmental concern. Therefore, the efficacy of a non-toxic AF candidate, acetophenone, was evaluated in preliminary laboratory assays using marine bacteria, diatom and Ulva spores. At a low concentration of 100 μg cm–2 of acetophenone, spore attachment of a green fouling alga was significantly reduced (p < 0.01). Similarly, 40% acetophenone coatings significantly inhibited diatom attachment. This new non-toxic AF agent was incorporated into controlled depletion paint (CDP). Fouling coverage (%), biomass, and fouling resistance (%) were estimated. On CDP coatings made with acetophenone (40%), a significant decrease in fouling biomass was estimated (p < 0.01).

Abstract:

Abstract:
Prostate cancer (CaP) is the most common adult male cancer in the developed world. The paucity of biomarkers to predict prostate tumor biology makes it important to identify key pathways that confer poor prognosis and guide potential targeted therapy. Using a murine forward mutagenesis screen in a Pten-null background, we identified peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (Pparg), encoding a ligand-activated transcription factor, as a promoter of metastatic CaP through activation of lipid signaling pathways, including up-regulation of lipid synthesis enzymes [fatty acid synthase (FASN), acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC), ATP citrate lyase (ACLY)]. Importantly, inhibition of PPARG suppressed tumor growth in vivo, with down-regulation of the lipid synthesis program. We show that elevated levels of PPARG strongly correlate with elevation of FASN in human CaP and that high levels of PPARG/FASN and PI3K/pAKT pathway activation confer a poor prognosis. These data suggest that CaP patients could be stratified in terms of PPARG/FASN and PTEN levels to identify patients with aggressive CaP who may respond favorably to PPARG/FASN inhibition.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a severe and chronic brain disorder that affects about 1% of the world population. It is among the most burdensome illnesses with a serious impact on patients, their families and society. To this day, a lot remains unknown about the neuropathological cause and etiology of SCZ. The prominent two-hit theory postulates that early neurodevelopmental abnormalities interact with a later “second hit” which occurs around symptom onset. Recent research points towards the role of inflammation in pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) was recently suggested as a potential key player in both first and second “hit” in the pathology of SCZ. It is considered to not only regulate brain development and synaptic plasticity, but to also mediate neuroinflammation. A point of interest for interaction with neuroinflammatory pathways is the Choroid Plexus (ChP). MMP-9 has been reported to be upregulated in ChP in SCZ. Since ChP regulates CSF production and permeability of the blood-CSF-barrier, MMP-9 upregulation in ChP might lead to its enlargement, as well as enlargement of the lateral ventricles and increased extracellular water volume, all found previously in SCZ. We investigate, for the first time, the relationship between MMP-9 blood plasma concentration and volume of ChP in patients with SCZ compared to healthy controls (HC). Methods We included 66 subjects (25 female = 38%, 41 male = 62%, mean age 32.59 +/- 9.14 years); 32 were patients with SCZ, 34 were HC. ELISA analysis was performed to measure MMP-9 blood concentrations in patients and HC. A whole brain, high-resolution three-dimensional T1-weighted magnetization prepared rapid gradient echo (MPRAGE) sequence scan was used to collect 240 sagittal slices, field of view = 224 x 224 mm2, 1 mm3 isotropic voxel, TR = 2.3 s, TE = 2.33 ms, flip angle = 8° on a 3T Siemens Magnetom Prisma. Structural T1 images underwent visual quality control, were realigned and parcellated into 176 gray and white matter regions using FreeSurfer software. Preliminary analyses were conducted comparing 1) MMP-9 levels between groups and 2) relating MMP-9 levels to ChP volume utilizing regression analyses. Results Patients with SCZ showed a strong upregulation of MMP-9 compared to HC (patients: 120 ± 60 ng/ml; HC: 60 ± 40 ng/ml; p < 0.0001). Furthermore, linear regression analyses - corrected for age and sex - demonstrated a positive association between concentration of MMP-9 and ChP volumes (left: R2 = .095, p < .01; right: R2 = .084, p < .02). Discussion To our knowledge, our study is the first to present preliminary evidence of an association between brain structure and MMP-9 peripheral upregulation in SCZ. Advanced evaluation of MMP-9 might enhance our understanding of illness cause, enable outcome predictions and paint the way for more individualized psychopharmacotherapy, as MMP-9 might serve as potential pharmacological target. However, further analyses are needed to validate our findings using as neuroanatomically precise methods as possible and to develop MMP-9 biomarkers that would capture central, as opposed to peripheral levels of MMP-9.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The prospects for economic development in Poland for the rest of this century depend on the ability of the authorities to handle a number of very serious obstacles that presently face the economy. If the constraints imposed by these obstacles are significantly reduced during the second half of the 1980s, a considerable improvement may take place during the 1990s. If, however, the authorities choose to follow present economic policies without modification, prolonged stagnation will likely continue. The final outcome will, of course, also depend on a number of external factors beyond the authorities' control, such as the state of the political and economic situation in the world and within the Warsaw Pact Bloc, East-West political and economic relations or the occurrence of some unforeseen natural or man-made ecological disaster. Assuming, however, no big changes in exogenous factors, the economic situation in Poland in the year 2000 will primarily be determined by the authorities' policies within the next few years.

Abstract:
The restoration of the paintings of Le Corbusier in the Villa E-1027 was preceded by an important study phase including systematic sampling of the paintings. One purpose of the study was to determine the presence of the original paintings under the global over-paint made by a local craftsman in the seventies. Four of the eight paintings have been rediscovered, in a much better condition than expected. These paintings are a fragile testimony of the particular use of “Ripolin” by Le Corbusier, in the context of its use by others famous artists as Picasso or Picabia in the same period.

Abstract:
The origins of the reference values for budget deficits and public debt (3 and 60 per cent of GDP) in the euro area are explored. Both numbers came into the Maastricht Treaty by coincidence. Later attempts to legitimise them are traced and found unconvincing. In particular the debt cap is scrutinised, often considered as a precondition for debt sustainability. Since the first overhaul of the Stability and Growth Pact in 2005, reference values for structural deficits became the focus of fiscal policy, but derived from the 60 per cent debt cap. With the so-called Fiscal Compact from 2012, caps for structural deficits were added to the semi-primary law of the European Union. It is argued that the reference values for deficits and debt are not consistent. If the Domar equation is observed, the changing relationship between interest rates on public debt and output growth should be included in the fiscal policy framework. Therefore ‘eternal’ reference values for deficits and debt should be removed from the primary law by Treaty amendments.

Abstract:
When I first read King, Keohane, and Verba (1994) (KKV), I was excited by the general theme of what seemed to me the obvious, but usually unspoken, idea that all political scientists, both quantitative and qualitative, are scientists and governed by the same scientific standards. KKV, as Henry Brady (Brady and Collier 2004, chap. 3) cleverly notes, clearly were preaching to the qualitative researcher, and the subject of the sermon was that qualitative researchers should adopt many of the ideas standard in quantitative research. Thus, to abuse both the metaphor and KKV, one might compare KKV to the view of the Inquisition that we are all God's children. But, having sat through many talks based on case studies, it is clear to me that getting everyone to think about the nature of the scientific enterprise we are all engaged in can only be a good thing.

Abstract:
Drugs targeting epigenetic mechanisms such as histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACi) suppress tumor growth. HDACi also induce the expression of ligands for the cytotoxicity receptor NKG2D rendering tumors more susceptible to natural killer (NK) cell-dependent killing. The major acetylases responsible for the expression of NKG2D ligands (NKG2D-L) are CBP and p300. The role of the oncogene and transcriptional repressor SKI, an essential part of an HDAC-recruiting co-repressor complex, which competes with CBP/p300 for binding to SMAD3 in TGFβ signaling, is unknown. Here we show that the siRNA-mediated downregulation of SKI in the pancreatic cancer cell lines Panc-1 and Patu8988t leads to an increased target cell killing by primary NK cells. However, the higher cytotoxicity of NK cells did not correlate with the induction of NKG2D-L. Of note, the expression of NKG2D-L and consequently NK cell-dependent killing could be induced upon LBH589 (LBH, panobinostat) or valproic acid (VPA) treatment irrespective of the SKI expression level but was significantly higher in pancreatic cancer cells upon genetic ablation of SKI. These data suggest that SKI represses the inducible expression of NKG2D-L. The combination of HDACi with NK cell-based immunotherapy is an attractive treatment option for pancreatic tumors, specifically for patients with high SKI protein levels.

Abstract:
e15106 Background: Recent clinical trials for developing new drugs for castration resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) have been done for the patients who are surgically or medically castrated, with castration level of testosterone. Although patients who received combined androgen blockade (CAB) with anti-androgen must have shown PSA progression after discontinuing the anti-androgen prior to study enrollment, such patients are analyzed together with patients with castration monotherapy. Methods: We analyzed the time to CRPC among the patients with primary androgen depletion therapy (PADT); LH-RH agonist or CAB (LH-RH agonist + anti-androgen) who have registered to the J-CaP study and were followed up for >10 years. Time to CRPC was defined as PSA progression or other disease progression. Patients were stratified into three risk groups using JCAPRA score (JCO 2009; 26: 4309). In addition to the time to CRPC, overall survival length (OS) after initiating PADT was analyzed. Results: Time to CRPC was significantly longer in the CAB group than monotherapy group in intermediate and high risk groups (Table). In addition, in the intermediate and high risk groups, OS was significantly longer for the patients with CAB (Log-rank test). Conclusions: The significant differences of the time to CRPC and OS will influence to the outcome of clinical trials of CRPC. It is important to take the type of ADT in to consideration when we analyze the results of clinical study of CRPC. [Table: see text]

Abstract:
e15508 Background: Gemcitabine (G) is regarded as the standard treatment for pts with APC. However, a standard second-line chemotherapy regimen has yet to be defined after G. PHY906, a 4-herb traditional Chinese medicine has a history of > 1,800 yrs of human use to treat GI symptoms including diarrhea. Preclinical studies showed that PHY906 may potentiate antitumor activity of CAP in human PANC-1 xenograft (ASCO 2007). A phase I study showed that CAP can be escalated up to 1750 mg/m2 PO BID on d1- 7 and PHY906 800mg PO BID on d1–4 q 2 wks with no DLTs (ASCO, 2008). Delivered dose-intensity of CAP was similar at 1750mg/m2 dose level as 1500mg/m2. Therefore, 1500mg/m2 of CAP and PHY906 was further tested in a phase II study as second-line treatment in pts with APC. Methods: Pts with G-refractory APC with ECOG PS <2 were treated with CAP 1500mg/m2 d1–7 with PHY906 800mg d1–4 q 2 wks. Response was assessed by CT scan according to RECIST q 6 wks and toxicity according to NCI-CTC v3.0. Primary objective is overall survival. Secondary objectives include overall RR, PFS and measurement of cytokines to assess inhibition of NF-kappa B, a possible mechanism responsible for PHY906's pharmacological activity. Results: As of January 5, 2009, 25 pts have been enrolled. Baseline characteristics include median age, 65 (range, 40–85); male/female,15/10; ECOG PS 0/1, 4/19; median cycles: 3 (r: 0.5–15). At this point 5 pts are still in active treatment. 4 pts have confirmed OS > 6 ms (1 still on study) with 2 further pts approaching 6 ms. Among evaluable pts, 1 had PR (5.3%), 11 SD (57.9%) and 7 PD (36.8%) after initial restaging scan. 36 % pts had >30% reduction in CA19–9 as biochemical response. There were 7 deaths on/within 30 days of study treatment, 6 related to PD and 1 had acute MI. G3/4 toxicities diarrhea 3/25 (12%), fatigue, 1/25 (4%), HFS 1/25 (4%) and mucositis 1/25 (4%). 1 pt was removed from study due to G3 HFS. Biomarker studies (IL4, GM-CSF, TNF-alpha, IL10, MCP-1, IL2, IL6) are ongoing. Conclusions: This is the first clinical study to evaluate a botanical formulation PHY906 with CAP in G-refractory APC pts. CAP + PHY906 regimen appears a safe and feasible salvage therapy in APC and warrants further investigation. In addition, PHY906 may have a cytoprotective antidiarrheal and anti-HFS effect, making treatment with CAP more tolerable. [Table: see text]

Precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) is synthetic calcium carbonate that has high purity of more than 98 wt% of CaCO3 content. Owing to its unique characteristic whereby its shape and size can be controlled to tailor to various applications, PCC has seen great demands in many industries such as paper, paint, plastic, food, ceramics, cosmetics, pharmaceutical, and many others. PCC can be synthesized via various methods and the most often used method in industry is via carbonation process. This process has caught interest of the oil and gas industry for utilizing existing carbon dioxide waste from plant processes. Precipitation of PCC is carried out using hydrated lime under various conditions at different gas purity (1 mol% CH4 + 99 mol% CO2 , 40 mol% CH4 + 60 mol% CO2 ), different gas flowrate, and different stirring rate. All experiments are carried out using 1 litre of ionic solution at ambient conditions. All samples are characterized using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), Particle Size Distribution, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF). FESEM analysis shows different surface morphology for different methane content with calcite formation. The particle size for all PCC produced at different parameters are comparable at the range 5-9 microns depending on the mixing rate used whereas XRF results indicate very high purity of CaCO3 of more than 99 wt%.

Abstract:

This paper presents results from the examination of a set of experimental samples using fibre optic reflectance spectroscopy (FORS) and diffuse reflectance imaging spectroscopy in the short-wave infrared (SWIR) range, combined with statistical analysis of the data for the discrimination and mapping of poppy and linseed oil. The aim was to evaluate the efficacy of this non-invasive approach for the study of paint samples with a view to the application of the method for characterisation of the two drying oils in painted art. The approach allowed discrimination between the two drying oils based on FORS spectra and the hyperspectral cube, indicating the influence of the spectral region around 1700 nm on the statistical discrimination based on the anti-symmetric and symmetric first overtone stretching of methylenic CH2 groups. This method is being studied as a potential non-invasive method of organic analysis of oil types that have formerly been studied using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), which requires micro-samples.

Abstract:

Abstract:
While the European Union (EU) fiscal rules are suspended in the years 2020–2022, new rules are in the making and might be activated in 2023. If the old rules were used again, massive austerity would be required in the face of the strongly elevated level of public debt and the gap to the 60 per cent debt cap in the EU Treaty. A new proposal is suggested in this article which requires only small changes in the Treaty and/or the Fiscal Compact, but a strong overhaul in secondary law, that is, the Stability and Growth Pact. The key ideas are to use net interest payments, as a share of GDP, as the new metric for defining debt sustainability rather than gross public debt. This would allow the adjustment of the rules to changing monetary environments, especially interest-rate levels, and changing differentials between interest rates and growth rates. This way, much more fiscal space would be generated both for higher-debt and lower-debt member states and the entire euro area.
