Gardiner, Michael William. "Local government marketing model." University of Southern Queensland, Faculty of Business, 2005. http://eprints.usq.edu.au/archive/00001428/.

Full text
Abstract:
Local government is one of three tiers of government that operate in Australia. This research investigates how marketing can be applied to local government in a holistic manner. To achieve this goal, theory needed to be reviewed and developed with one particular outcome being a model outlining the components of the marketing environments that need understanding prior to the application of marketing practice. Local government was selected as the context of this study as much is written about the marketing of not-for-profit, social and public sector organisations but the literature on the integration of these practices in a holistic approach for local government is very limited. Further local government has a major economic impact on the viability and longevity of many rural and semi-rural areas of Australia. Equally in the metropolitan areas, local government accounts for a considerable proportion of the employment and impact on growth and development of these regions. Traditional marketing theory has been found wanting in the local government area, as traditional marketing practices is being applied in a piecemeal approach. This practice has caused local governments to have conflicting messages and product offerings to the community. However the review of marketing derivatives theory shows that no one derivative addressed the scope of products and activities managed by local government. Reviewing these derivatives show that marketing core concepts are relevant to local government, but the complexity lies in the application of marketing where the components of added complexity were derived from the organisational focus, structure and target market definitions. The theoretical process to develop this understanding of local government marketing and to develop a proposed model for the application of local government marketing was derived from the literature relating to the core traditional marketing concepts and the marketing derivatives of public, not-for-profit and social marketing. This review of the literature aided in defining the complexities of local government marketing and helped found the preliminary local government marketing model. With the use of case analysis three local government cases were explored. The first case, a metropolitan local government, used convergent interviewing to determine the factors relevant to the development of the holistic local government marketing model. Confirmatory case analysis was used for the remaining two cases, one semirural and one rural, to refine the developing model. Ultimately, the model was confirmed in principle but minor changes were required to make the model robust across the three cases. From a theoretical perspective the research identified that the marketing derivatives used in the development of the local government marketing model were relevant and further sets local government apart from but integrated with the three derivatives studied. From a practical perspective the development of the local government marketing model goes some way to developing practices that are coordinated and integrated across the local government organisation, thus providing local government with the advantages of having an integrated local government marketing approach.

Full text
Abstract:
Churn analysis is an important tool for companies as it can reduce the costs that are related to customer churn. Churn prediction is the process of identifying users before they churn, this is done by implementing methods on collected data in order to find patterns that can be helpful when predicting new churners in the future. The objective of this report is to identify churners with the use of surveys collected from different golfclubs, their members and guests. This was accomplished by testing several different supervised machine learning algorithms in order to find the different classes and to see which supervised algorithms are most suitable for this kind of data. The margin of success was to have a greater accuracy than the percentage of major class in the datasetThe data was processed using label encoding, ONE-hot encoding and principal component analysis and was split into 10 folds, 9 training folds and 1 testing fold ensuring cross validation when iterated 10 times rearranging the test and training folds. Each algorithm processed the training data to create a classifier which was tested on the test data. The classifiers used for the project was K nearest neighbours, Support vector machine, multi-layer perceptron, decision trees and random forest. The different classifiers generally had an accuracy of around 72% and the best classifier which was random forest had an accuracy of 75%. All the classifiers had an accuracy above the margin of success.K-folding, confusion-matrices, classification report and other internal crossvalidation techniques were performed on the the data to ensure the quality of the classifier. The project was a success although there is a strong belief that the bottleneck for the project was the quality of the data in terms of new legislation when collecting and storing data that results in redundant and faulty data.

Edelen, Delores. "EXPLAINING CHURN: MASS SOCIETY, SOCIAL CAPITAL, & COMMUNITY CHURN." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2004. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/3054.

Full text
Abstract:
Population churn--the population turnover experienced by a community--can have differential effects on a community. Mass society theory suggests that because the churn rate experienced by communities can contribute to their uprooting, fragmentation, and isolation, churn is a potent threat to the stability of our modern day communities. Social capital theory, to the contrary, suggests otherwise. Social capital theory suggests that churn can have positive effects on communities by bringing new migrants with valuable human capital skills and experiences to communities. These migrants bring to their new communities the potential for creating new jobs, spurring economic development, and for initiating housing starts that expand housing options for the poor and minorities. In so doing, they help create and sustain vibrant, growing modern day communities. Yet in spite of the significant role churn may play in determining the health and viability of modern day communities, it has been overlooked in the migration literature, which is mostly dominated by individual-level research on the causes and effects of migration, particularly the pecuniary benefits to movers. Using county-level data and multivariate analyses, this research seeks to fill this gap in the literature by examining the relationship between the community and churn, from the perspectives provided by social capital and mass society theories.

Hinchliffe, R. "Chern-Simons theory." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 1998. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.604074.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is concerned with various mathematical aspects of Topological Quantum Field Theories (TQFTs) known as Chern-Simons theories. Although this subject has its origins in theoretical physics, the treatment here is in terms of the axiomatic approach due to Segal and Atiyah. A key feature of the thesis is the notion of a 3-tier (axiomatic) TQFT. This involves assigning a category to a closed I-manifold and a functor to a 2-manifold with boundary which is viewed as a cobordism between I-manifolds. To a closed 2-manifold Σ the theory assigns a vector space HΣ , and to a 3-manifold M the theory assigns a numerical invariant (if M is closed), a vector in HδM (if M has closed boundary δM ) or a natural transformation of functors (if the boundary δM of M has a 1-dimensional boundary). After a brief introduction, we introduce in chapter 1 the definition of a TQFT and that of a 3-tier TQFT. We then describe the geometrical set-up for Chern-Simons Theory for a Lie group G and focus on the particular case of G = SU(2). Finally we describe quite concisely how it might fit into a 3-tier TQFT structure. Roughly the next half of the thesis treats the specific case of Chern-Simons theory for the circle group T. In chapter 2 we describe a number of interesting topological aspects of the theory. In chapter 3 we go on to show how the theory fits into 3-tier TQFT framework. In the next two chapters we begin to deal with Chern-Simons theories for G a non-compact group. In chapters 6 and 7 we deal with a rather more algebraic theory which is the abelian version of a theory which is meant to compute the Casson invariant for oriented homology 3-spheres. For this reason we call it the abelian Casson-type theory. From the physics viewpoint, it coincides with the Chern-Simons theory where G is a supergroup. This is rather difficult to motivate mathematically, so we adopt an algebraic-topological definition of the theory and show it satisfies the TQFT axioms. We then go on to show how it fits into the 3-tier TQFT structure. The novelty here is that the category assigned to a 1-manifold is not semisimple.

York, Perrin. "Comparing the Emotional Impact of a Vadd11 Chord versus a V Chord." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2019. https://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/1314.

Full text
Abstract:
The psychological research on music and emotion supports how the two concepts have always been intertwined. The most common line of research in this field is related to the commonly experienced phenomenon that major chords sound happy while minor chords sound sad. This proposed study takes a specific extended major chord (the Vadd11 chord) and tests whether the V chord with a color note, an added 11, has a significantly different emotional impact on listeners as compared to a V chord without an 11. The chord will be played within a I-V-I progression so that the Vadd11 chord is given musical context. Participants are asked to rate the how emotional the progression is and to indicate their preference between the two chords. Both piano and strings timbres will be tested. The chord progression change is hypothesized to cause a significantly increased emotional impact. Multiple confounding variables will be examined within the study (specifically cultural musical background, or what culture’s music participants listened to in their upbringing, and musical sophistication, or how musically adept participants are). Neither of these variables nor the timbre are anticipated to affect the changes in emotional reaction.

Abstract:
The way humans listen to music and perceive its structure isautomatic. In an attempt by Friberg et al. (2011) to model thishuman perception mechanism, a set of nine perceptual features wasselected to describe the overall properties of music. By letting atest group rate the perceptual features in a data set of musicalpieces, they discovered that the factor with most importance fordescribing the emotions happy and sad was the perceptual featuremodality. Modality in music denotes whether the key of a musicalpiece is in major or minor. This thesis aims to predict the modality in a continuous scale (0-10) from chord analysis with multiple linear regression and a NeuralNetwork (NN) in a computational model using a custom set offeatures. The model was able to predict the modality with anexplained variability of 64 % using a NN. The results clearlyindicated that the approach of using chords as features to predictmodality, is appropriate for music data sets that consisted of tonalmusic.

Pokorny, Andrew. "Chord-Specific Scalar Material in Classical Music: An Adaptation of Jazz Chord-Scale Theory." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/18443.

Full text
Abstract:
Jazz chord-scale theory identifies scales that can be used to embellish a particular type of chord. It has fostered the notion that chords can generate their own local scales. This idea as well as many of the scale types that jazz chord-scale theory identifies are essentially foreign to classical music theory, which instead tends to focus on the scales that represent relatively global key areas--that is, the scales that accommodate entire chord successions. Both the jazz and classical perspectives can coexist, and each can inform and supplement the other. This study explores implications of the jazz chord-scale perspective for classical music and classical music theory. The scalar notes and intervals that embellish a particular chord are referred to as chord-specific scalar material (CSSM). Following the suggestion of jazz chord-scale theory and Ramon Satyendra's chord spaces, each chordal zone can exhibit its own local tonal hierarchy potentially consisting of a local tonic note (usually a chord root), chordal notes and intervals, scalar notes and intervals, and sub-scalar notes and intervals. Focusing particularly on the scalar level of these chord-specific tonal hierarchies, CSSM is a relatively foreground phenomenon that can be understood against the backdrop of a deeper, uninterrupted scalar space that is associated with the key of the passage at hand. A chord succession can occupy the deeper scalar space while each chord is embellished with CSSM suggestive of potentially different local scalar spaces. This study considers examples of CSSM spanning the music of Bach through Fauré, and it proposes a classification of four general types of CSSM found in classical repertoire. Each type suggests a different theoretical derivation for examples of CSSM, and each type has its own implications for tonal function (both locally and globally), coherence, and color. The fourth type apparently did not emerge until the Romantic era. Special attention is given to CSSM in the music of Gabriel Fauré, who seemingly developed rather innovative CSSM techniques. Practical benefits of this theoretical approach for today's composers, improvisers, and performers are also considered. Various techniques for generating CSSM are offered, and further scalar possibilities are explored.

The purpose of this dissertation is to show the new musical practices of the Choro. To this end, we consider changes in social, artistic and educational aspects. The text presents an overview of elements, intrinsically to the style and its innovations. On some chapters, Roda de Choro and its novelties are described, also the teaching of the style, the musical structure of a traditional Choro and then what has changed, doing comparisons, what factors that have contributed to these changes, showing theories that can contribute to support these innovations (such as Hybridism, Habitus and cultural capital), the practices of this musical style (performance, interpretation and improvisation) and at the end of the work, we present three musical pieces with our observations about the new face of this Choro style. It was noted that such changes result from resonances of other musical styles and from the musical instruction of new composers and performers.

Wissmann, Jens. "Chord sequence patterns in OWL." Thesis, City University London, 2012. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/1306/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis addresses the representation of, and reasoning on, musical knowledge in the Semantic Web. The Semantic Web is an evolving extension of the World Wide Web that aims at describing information that is distributed on the web in a machine-processable form. Existing approaches to modelling musical knowledge in the context of the Semantic Web have focused on metadata. The description of musical content and reasoning as well as integration of content descriptions and metadata are yet open challenges. This thesis discusses the possibilities of representing musical knowledge in the Web Ontology Language (OWL) focusing on chord sequence representation and presents and evaluates a newly developed solution. The solution consists of two main components. Ontological modelling patterns for musical entities such as notes and chords are introduced in the (MEO) ontology. A sequence pattern language and ontology (SEQ) has been developed that can express patterns in a form resembling regular expressions. As MEO and SEQ patterns both rewrite to OWL they can be combined freely. Reasoning tasks such as instance classification, retrieval and pattern subsumption are then executable by standard Semantic Web reasoners. The expressiveness of SEQ has been studied, in particular in relation to grammars. The complexity of reasoning on SEQ patterns has been studied theoretically and empirically, and optimisation methods have been developed. There is still great potential for improvement if specific reasoning algorithms were developed to exploit the sequential structure, but the development of such algorithms is outside the scope of this thesis. MEO and SEQ have also been evaluated in several musicological scenarios. It is shown how patterns that are characteristic of musical styles can be expressed and chord sequence data can be classified, demonstrating the use of the language in web retrieval and as integration layer for different chord patterns and corpora. Furthermore, possibilities of using SEQ patterns for harmonic analysis are explored using grammars for harmony; both a hybrid system and a translation of limited context-free grammars into SEQ patterns have been developed. Finally, a distributed scenario is evaluated where SEQ and MEO are used in connection with DBpedia, following the Linked Data approach. The results show that applications are already possible and will benefit in the future from improved quality and compatibility of data sources as the Semantic Web evolves.

Higher gauge theory arises naturally in superstring theory, but many of its features remain obscure. In this thesis, after an exposition of the bacis tools in local higher gauge theory, a higher gauge Chern-Simons model is defined. We discuss the classical equations of motion as well as the behaviour of the gauge anomaly. We perform canonical quantization and we introduce two possible quantization schemes for the model. We also expound higher parallel transport in higher gauge theory, and we speculate that it can provide Wilson surfaces as topological observables for the higher gauge Chern-Simons theory.

Full text
Abstract:
Following the work of Rees, Thomas and Barton on the divisibility properties of certain normal chern numbers some chem numbers of the Milnor-Novikov generators of the cobordism ring are examined. The divisibility properties, at least up to 2-torsion, of these chem numbers are computed and these properties are then used to construct the manifolds whose chern numbers realize the minimum divisibility. As an example of how these direct methods can be employed an observation of Libgobcr and Wood is verified and improved upon. Odd torsion is also examined. It is observed that a proof from the work of Barton and Rees is incomplete and that proof is duly completed. Symmetric functions are introduced to form natural coefficients for a formal sum of the chem numbers of a manifold. Using this construction a bound on the primes contained in the hcf of any chem number is obtained, where this bound is dependent upon the length of the partition which indexes the chern number. A systematic method for lowering this bound (often eliminating odd torsion completely) for particular examples is demonstrated. As a digression the link between chem numbers and symmetric functions is examined in its own right. In particular the combinatorial side is addressed through the generalization of a partition of a number to a partition of a set. The general case of an arbitrary chem number of an arbitrary cross product of projective spaces is considered in detail and a general formula is obtained using the language of the lattice of partitions of a set. Examples to demonstrate the viability of this approach are presented.

Abstract:
This study aimed to investigate the choro's musical improvisation and the way the chorões learn and teach it, through the viewpoints of some choro musicians and scholars, in view of the wide dissemination of methodologies from [or inspired by] jazz culture. Based primarily on talk-about-music, this work presents a more conceptual and philosophical [but no less practical] approach - after all, the speech is able to shape not only our thinking but also our actions, in short and long term. Since the speech of chorões and o choro musicians and scholars is the raw material for this study, we collected twelve semi-structured interviews, of which we highlight and bring together a number of meanings and values essential to understanding the phenomenon of musical improvisation practiced by the traditional chorões. In the processes of influencing of and/or hybridization between jazz and choro cultures, many of these values and meanings clash causing some confusion as to the origin and purposes of improvisation in each of these cultures. In investigating the emic view of chorões, we wish to develop more of an ethnopedagogic awareness, so needed in the incorporation of popular music in ours music schools.

Abstract:
Paradox Interactive is a Swedish video game developer and publisher which has players all around the world. Paradox’s largest platform in terms of amount of players and revenue is the PC. The goal of this thesis was to make a churn predic-tion model to predict the probability of players churning in order to know which players to focus on in retention campaigns. Since the purpose of churn prediction is to minimize loss due to customers churning the focus was on big-spenders (whales) in Paradox PC games. In order to define which players are big-spenders the spending for players over a 12 month rolling period (from 2016-01-01 until 2018-12-31) was investigated. The players spending more than the 95th-percentile of the total spending for each pe-riod were defined as whales. Defining when a whale has churned, i.e. stopped being a big-spender in Paradox PC games, was done by looking at how many days had passed since the players bought something. A whale has churned if he has not bought anything for the past 28 days. When data had been collected about the whales the data set was prepared for a number of di˙erent supervised machine learning methods. Logistic Regression, L1 Regularized Logistic Regression, Decision Tree and Random Forest were the meth-ods tested. Random Forest performed best in terms of AUC, with AUC = 0.7162. The conclusion is that it seems to be possible to predict the probability of churning for Paradox whales. It might be possible to improve the model further by investi-gating more data and fine tuning the definition of churn.

The subject of this Master‘s Thesis - „The Role of Choir in Formation of Ethno-Cultural Attitude of Students“.Globalisation is associated with the positive and the negative at the same time. It manifests itself in danger for traditional culture of people, its variety and, especially, the spiritual component of culture, including traditional humanistic virtues. As the activity of choir makes great influence on the formation of ethno-cultural attitude of students, strengthening of ethno-cultural attitude in the activity of mixed choir and choir of schoolchildren from the 1st to the 4th grades is an urgent pedagogical problem. The purpose of this study is to investigate possibilities of formation of ethno-cultural attitude of students sustaining and developing national traditions in the choir of schoolchildren from the 1st to the 4th grades and mixed choir. The object of the study is the attitude of choir members and other students to ethno-culture.Having analysed studies on the influence of the processes of globalisation on the national consciousness and having studied pedagogical and psychological literature associated with the subject of the research, threat for survival of national traditions and, furthermore, importance of national education of young generation can be clearly observed. With the help of questionnaire survey, ethno-cultural attitudes of students were determined and conclusions were made. Abstract:
Arising out of the work of Marshall McLuhan, Eric Havelock, Walter Ong, Jacques Derrida and Gregory Ulmer, among others, it is widely thought there are three stages in the history of human communication: the oral, the literate and the electronic. Nonetheless, debate is ongoing over the integration, ordering and the substantive separation of these stages. An upshot of these debates is that each stage is loosely allied to a particular socio/political structure: hunter/gatherer or tribal societies, nation states, and globalisation respectively. In the current alloying of ‘electronic communication’ and ‘globalisation’ though there is a rising interest in what is termed ‘new regionalism’, or regionalisation, even regionality. Accordingly, Chora-Logic: Electracy as Regional Epistemology examines the possibility of an emerging conceptual alliance (and through reference to two Australian regions a sometimes embodied and situated one) between the embryonic communicational infrastructure of electracy and the age-old spatial scale of the region, a relationship that might just come to represent a means of rethinking the civic and the psychic, the commercial and governmental frameworks of an electro-energised global skein. It may also be a way of reinvigorating a study in the relation of the body (in its capacity as a citizen-subject) to the nation state, especially as all these entities are increasingly though ambiguously constituted in and through globalisation. The method of synthesising and antagonising these relations between electracy and regionalism is through the philosophy of chora, Plato’s conception of embodied place as found in the middle section of the Timaeus, coaxed along by a range of interpretations of this important genesis myth in Western philosophy. In particular, chora is taken up in the work of Gregory Ulmer as a key method in the ongoing conceptualisation of an electrate epistemology. Arising out of these concerns Chora-Logic is an experimental re-configuration of the sovereign, abstracted and disembodied citizen-subject of the Cartesian mould (a significant psycho-political mooring of the literate national character) to one situated both in the virtual density and multidimensional actuality of a particular place (organically conceived of herein as an idiosyncratic mix of psychic, domestic, workplace, local and regional proximities), but whose both [dis][embodied] self-knowledge and world-knowledge are now increasingly realised by access to an electronically arbitrated global/regional polis. In sound-bite terms, the bumper sticker could just as easily proclaim the following inversion: ‘Think and feel chora-logically, act globally’. Finally, the nucleus of Chora-Logic: Electracy as Regional Epistemology is a risky praxis whose experimental eddy (in both formal and content terms) spins within the current ambivalence, uncertainty and fast-paced change in electronic communicative arrangements (electracy), as these are themselves wrapped in the psychic and socio-political variabilities of spatial affiliation, all of which are symbiotically entwined regardless of the historical period and/or the geographical context.

Abstract:
Topological states of matter exhibit a wealth of novel properties including the exact quantisation of macroscopic observables and the presence of edge states. In this thesis, we study the non-equilibrium dynamics of a class of topological phases, known as Chern insulators. By focusing on the Haldane model, we study quenches between the topological and non-topological phases, and the dynamics induced on physical observables. A notable feature is that the Chern number, calculated for an infinite system, is unchanged under the dynamics following such a quench. However, in finite-size geometries, the initial and final Hamiltonians are distinguished by the presence or absence of edge states. We study the edge excitations and describe their impact on the dynamics of the edge currents and the magnetisation. We show that, following a quantum quench, the edge currents relax towards new steady-state values, and that there is light-cone spreading of the currents into the interior of the sample. The late-time behaviour of the edge currents, after multiple traversals of the sample, is captured by a Generalised Gibbs Ensemble. We further provide an analysis of the Hall response following a quantum quench in an isolated system, with explicit results for the Haldane model. We show that the Hall conductance is no longer related to the Chern number in the post-quench state, in contrast to the equilibrium case. We also discuss the effects of generic open boundary conditions and confinement potentials. Finally, we discuss the impact of disorder on the phases of the Haldane model, both in and out of equilibrium. We conclude with a discussion of ongoing work on the non-equilibrium dynamics of the entanglement spectrum of the Haldane model, and with prospects for further research. The results presented in Chapters 2 and 3 are published in Refs [1, 2]. The results in Chapter 4 are currently in preparation for publication [3].

O Choro é gênero instrumental brasileiro, surgido no Rio de Janeiro no final do século XIX. _________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
Choro is a Brazilian music instrumental genre, wich was born in Rio de Janeiro at the second half of the nineteenth century. This work will discuss the Choro performance and Choro musicians who live in Brasilia and their vision about their art form. The research was based on interviews with musicians about their musical knowledge and their perception about their musical practices. There were also a critical observation of the fields where the Choro is played in Brasília, formal presentations that occur mainly at the Clube do Choro and a more informal setting of “Roda de Choroâ” at Tartaruga Lanches. The etnografic work took special attention at the modes of learning by the musicians, the musical and social contexts, the relationship between tradition and innovation. The musiciansa’s. discourse showed that there is a deep knowledge about happen musically and socially in the Choro field in Brasília, which is transmitted basically by oral tradition, and shared by the ones who choosed to belong to the Choro genre.

We give a formula for the Chern character on the DG category of global matrix factorizations on a smooth scheme $X$ with superpotential $w\in \Gamma(\O_X)$. Our formula takes values in a Cech model for Hochschild homology. Our methods may also be adapted to get an explicit formula for the Chern character for perfect complexes of sheaves on $X$ taking values in right derived global sections of the De-Rham algebra. Along the way we prove that the DG version of the Chern Character coincides with the classical one for perfect complexes.

Abstract:
Customer churn is problematic for any business trying to expand their customer base. The acquisition of new customers to replace churned ones are associated with additional costs, whereas taking measures to retain existing customers may prove more cost efficient. As such, it is of interest to estimate the time until the occurrence of a potential churn for every customer in order to take preventive measures. The application of deep learning and machine learning to this type of problem using time series data is relatively new and there is a lot of recent research on this topic. This thesis is based on the assumption that early signs of churn can be detected by the temporal changes in customer behavior. Recurrent neural networks and more specifically long short-term memory (LSTM) and gated recurrent unit (GRU) are suitable contenders since they are designed to take the sequential time aspect of the data into account. Random forest (RF) and stochastic vector machine (SVM) are machine learning models that are frequently used in related research. The problem is solved through a classification approach, and a comparison is done with implementations using LSTM, GRU, RF, and SVM. According to the results, LSTM and GRU perform similarly while being slightly better than RF and SVM in the task of predicting customers that will churn in the coming six months, and that all models could potentially lead to cost savings according to simulations (using non-official but reasonable costs assigned to each prediction outcome). Predicting the time until churn is a more difficult problem and none of the models can give reliable estimates, but all models are significantly better than random predictions.

Abstract:
Predicting when a customer is about to turn to a competitor can be difficult, yet extremely valuable from a business perspective. The moment a customer stops being considered a customer is known as churn, a widely researched topic in several industries when dealing with subscription-services. However, in industries with non-subscription services and products, defining churn can be a daunting task and the existing literature does not fully cover this field. Therefore, this thesis can be seen as a contribution to current research, specially when not having a set definition for churn. A definition for churn, adjusted to DIAKRIT’s business, is created. DIAKRIT is a company working in the real estate industry, which faces many challenges, such as a huge seasonality. The prediction was approached as a supervised problem, where three different Machine Learning methods were used: Logistic Regression, Random Forest and Support Vector Machine. The variables used in the predictions are predominantly activity data. With a relatively high accuracy and AUC-score, Random Forest was concluded to be the most reliable model. It is however clear that the model cannot separate between the classes perfectly. It was also visible that the Random Forest model produces a relatively high precision. Thereby, it can be settled that even though the model is not flawless the customers predicted to churn are very likely to churn.

Abstract:
The thesis is an archaeological study of the island of Lesbos, with emphasis upon the central settlement of the Greek polis (the asty) and the surrounding territory of each city (the chora). Chapter 1 offers an introductory overview of the physical constitution of the island. Chapter 2 considers the development through the Dark Age and Archaic periods of the settlements which became the central asty of the poleis in Lesbos. Chapter 3 focuses on the chora of the poleis in early Lesbos, examining a series of towers and enclosures of Lesbian polygonal masonry. Detailed treatment is given to the style of masonry employed in order to give indications about the likely date of the structures. The social angle is also examined, exploring the possible group identity and social definition in the chora, and the other roles played out by the structures. Possible implications to be drawn from the lack of similar structures in the chora of the polis of Mytilene are considered. Both discussions in Chapters 2 and 3 are contextualised with other regional/island surveys to explore points of similarity or difference between Lesbos and the rest of Greece. -- The conclusions of the two studies are then summarised, drawn together, and supplemented by six appendices. The first four appendices tabulate the archaeological data from the island, examine epigraphical data for agricultural estates in the Roman Imperial period, discuss the pine forest in eastern Lesbos, and finally the distribution of epigraphical finds in Lesbos. A penultimate study considers the literary evidence of the war for Sigeion between the Mytileneans and the Athenians. In the last appendix, there is a re-examination of the work and conclusions of Page concerning the creation of a framework for Lesbian history in the late seventh and early sixth centuries from the fragments of Alkaios' poetry.

Abstract:
Modern gas turbine engines operate at temperatures well above the melting point of the metal components. This has driven manufactures to develop sophisticated cooling methods which minimise the use of coolant to maximise engine efficiency by enabling further increases in operating temperature. This thesis investigates the cooling performance of engine representative mid-chord internal cooling passages for turbine blades. The work forms part of a larger E.C. FP7 project ERICKA (Engine Representative Internal Cooling Knowledge Applications). This thesis provides detailed maps of heat transfer coefficient (HTC) under a number of conditions, new experimental techniques, and has lead to a better understanding of the impact HTC distributions have on the thermal performance of a turbine blade at engine conditions. Transient liquid crystal experiments have been conducted on a large scale model of an engine representative internal cooling passage at three aspect ratios (width:height (chord length:spanwise length), 1:2, 1:3 and 1:4). Spatially resolved maps of Nusselt number have been produced for the full surface of the internal cooling passages. Little information exists in the literature for more engine representative geometries, and it is rare for spatial measurements to be presented over the full surface. The detailed maps provide validation data for CFD within the ERICKA programme. A novel method which produces spatially resolved maps in areas with highly non-one-dimensional heat transfer has been developed and validated. This method couples transient finite element analysis and data from transient liquid crystal experiments. Applied to the ribbed passage geometry, this produced spatially resolved maps of HTC over the rib surface. To the author’s best knowledge this is the first time spatial HTC maps have been presented for an engine representative rib. Industry best practice methods for internal cooling passage design typically apply averaged values of HTC, in part due to lack of spatially resolved data. To determine the significance of this approximation on blade design and life, experimental measurements have been applied to finite element (FEA) models at typical engine conditions. Application of a 3D HTC distribution to a FEA model of a section of ribbed wall demonstrated a significant under prediction (up to 58%) of localised thermal gradients when an average value is applied compared to a spatially resolved profile. This work demonstrated good agreement between distributions taken from experimental data and CFD predictions, indicating that CFD distributions may be more appropriate than bulk values in the design process. A 2D FEA study was undertaken to quantify the impact of HTC distribution approximations and aspect ratio on cooling of a generic turbine section. This study considered multiple adjacent internal cooling passages. It was confirmed that multi-pass arrangements offer greater heat removal for a given mass flow rate. Also a symmetric heat transfer profile with a higher HTC on the ribbed wall is the most desirable distribution. Use of average values significantly impacted the metal temperature, causing an underprediction up to 13◦C and 8◦C in the maximum and average values respectively. Based on the experimental HTC data, the 1:3 aspect ratio passage offered the lowest metal temperatures. Applying HTC distributions from CFD data (calculated with using the centreline temperature) showed, in general, good agreement, with the lowest metal temperatures (by up to 8◦C) in the 1:4 aspect ratio passage. Use of and HTC distribution provided by CFD prediction based on the mixed bulk temperature, produced average and peak metal temperatures 16◦C and 17◦C, respectively, lower in the 1:4 aspect ratio passage than the next best design. This highlights the need for appropriate and consistent method to be used in the analysis. As expected, reducing the passage aspect ratio led to increases in both thermal gradient and total pressure loss.

Flöjs, Amanda, and Alexandra Hägg. "Churn Prediction : Predicting User Churn for a Subscription-based Service using Statistical Analysis and Machine Learning Models."

Abstract:
Subscription-based services are becoming more popular in today’s society. Therefore, any company that engages in the subscription-based business needs to understand the user behavior and minimize the number of users canceling their subscription, i.e. minimize churn. According to marketing metrics, the probability of selling to an existing user is markedly higher than selling to a brand new user. Nonetheless, it is of great importance that more focus is directed towards preventing users from leaving the service, in other words preventing user churn. To be able to prevent user churn the company needs to identify the users in the risk zone of churning. Therefore, this thesis project will treat this as a classification problem. The objective of the thesis project was to develop a statistical model to predict churn for a subscription-based service. Various statistical methods were used in order to identify patterns in user behavior using activity and engagement data including variables describing recency, frequency, and volume. The best performing statistical model for predicting churn was achieved by the Random Forest algorithm. The selected model is able to separate the two classes of churning users and the non-churning users with 73% probability and has a fairly low missclassification rate of 35%. The results show that it is possible to predict user churn using statistical models. Although, there are indications that it is difficult for the model to generalize a specific behavioral pattern for user churn. This is understandable since human behavior is hard to predict. The results show that variables describing how frequent the user is interacting with the service are explaining the most whether a user is likely to churn or not.
Prenumerationstjänster blir alltmer populära i dagens samhälle.

Abstract:
When Lithuania became the competent member of the European Union, the goals of the perfection of the society became extremely topical. The activity, creativity and self-expression of an individual are important factors of the development of the democratic society, and personality. Because of the information, which is becoming more complicated and plentiful, the necessity of the constant training arises, which makes up the prerequisite for the development of the human values. The value of the artistic training becomes eminently important while creating the intellectual, competent and creative society of information. Therefore, the informal artistic training of the adults tends to be much more widespread form of education in modern society, and that helps to individual to enlarge his cultural interests, to form his creative power, and to become the active citizen of the democratic society. The choral singing, as the individual value, becomes apparent in the particular cultural context and becomes the way of the appeasement of self-expression. Therefore, it is very important to make its behaviour become live and significant to the society and individual. While analysing the purpose of the choir in the context of musical self-expression of an individual, it becomes apparent that we have to consider the level of the musical culture of the chanters, their musical capability and needs, to plan the repertoire of the choir, which corresponds vocal-technical capabilities and... Abstract:
Tyrimo tikslas – Nustatyti sritis, kuriose suaugusiems sudaromos galimybės mokytis. Siekiant šio tikslo, numatyti uždaviniai: 1. Apibudinti suaugusiųjų mokymosi... [toliau žr. visą tekstą]
The educational system is based on the principle of humanism and is oriented towards human values, i.e. freedom, self-expression, creativity, love and compassion. It perceives personality as its most significant object of the investigation; consequently, this system has revealed a man as the entity endowed with freedom, creative powers, awareness, and characterized by the need to provide its existence with the spiritual sense and to resist breaking into separate elements. Personality can be formed only by acting itself and under the influence of distant and nearby surroundings. Activities are the main form of human expression in the world (Jovaisa L., 2002). Art is a value for personality when a person acts on the basis of artistic means or creates art himself or herself. As a result, art serves personality as a means of self-creation. The problem of the research. The study „Development of Continuing Adult Education Opportunities in the Context of Lifelong Learning Strategy Implementation“ (2004) conducted by Dr.Tadas Tamosiunas and other researchers shows that the number of such students is very small in Lithuania. People learn, but nobody, even students themselves, name this process as learning, although it is taking place. Therefore, the choice of this study has been determined by the wish to gather the facts proving that adults do really learn. Information obtained would be used in writing the article for choirmasters, as well as the institutions providing these... [to full text]

Abstract:
Choro vadovo darbo profesionalumą atspindi tinkamas mokymo metodų parinkimas, mokėjimas juos derinti su menine, muzikine veikla ir tuo būdu pasiekti norimų ugdymo rezultatų. Todėl ugdant daugiabalsį dainavimą jaunių chore būtinas kryptingas bei sistemingas vadovo darbas. Paskelbti Lietuvoje tyrimai, dainavimo problematiką analizuojantys metodiniai leidiniai bei straipsniai iš esmės nesuformuluoja išsamaus ir esminio daugiabalsumo ugdymo metodų taikymo chore galimybių. Nefiksuojama, kokie pagrindiniai būdai turėtų būti taikomi šiam tikslui pasiekti. Vadovaujant jaunių chorui, tokia literatūra, kurioje nurodomi daugiabalsumo lavinimo pratimai be metodinių paaiškinimų, pedagoginiame darbe sukelia tik painiavos, o ne rezultatyvumo.
The managerial professionalism of the choir leader is reflected by the selection of appropriate teaching methods, the ability of combining them with the artistic and musical activities and thereby achieving the desired educational outcomes. Therefore, training polyphonic singing in the youth choir requires a systematic and purposeful leadership. Researches published in Lithuania, methodical publications and articles, analyzing singing problems practically do not formulate the opportunities of complete and essential polyphonic training techniques of the choir.
