Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the ethno-culturally hybrid Straits Chinese, who intermarried with local Malays for generations in the Straits Settlements of British Malaya and Singapore, and the role of female education in efforts to restore their socioeconomic status during the early twentieth century. Straits Chinese were also known as Peranakan (Malay for “child/born of”), and their women were called Nyonya. Peranakan male elites (called Baba) expressed concerns about the backwardness of the Nyonya in the Straits Chinese Magazine and founded the Singapore Chinese Girls’ School to modernize their women and their community. The Straits Chinese perspective on female education was similar to that of elites in various modernizing nations around the world, but their case was unique because they occupied several ethno-cultural and national categories concurrently. Straits Chinese women were tasked with representing modernity and tradition simultaneously, and with helping to secure their community’s place in the transition from colony to nation-state.

Abstract:
This chapter studies how in China—divided by civil war into mainland China and Taiwan—two opposing political camps instrumentalized the writing of history for political purposes. With the beginning of the end of the Cold War in East Asia around 1975–6, the writing of history on both sides of the Taiwan Straits underwent major changes. In Taiwan, questions of national identity became increasingly important, and it is no surprise that Taiwanese history grew in popularity. On the mainland, academic history-writing became gradually marginalized in the wake of a thorough commercialization of the historical field. The dominant discourse now turned anti-revolutionary, leaving the Communist Party in a difficult position as it faced the paradox that its legitimacy depended on the very revolutionary discourse now being attacked by a reformist paradigm that it needed to adopt in order to modernize the country.

Abstract:
The Yiguandao (Way of Pervading Unity) was one of the major redemptive societies of Republican China. It is nowadays one of the largest and most influential religious movements of the Chinese world and at the same time one of the least known and understood. From its powerful base in Taiwan, it develops worldwide, including in Mainland China, where it nevertheless remains officially forbidden. Based on extensive ethnographic work carried out over nearly a decade, Reclaiming the Wilderness explores the expansionary dynamics of this group and its regional circulations such as they can be primarily observed from a Hong Kong perspective. It analyzes the proselytizing impetus of the adepts, the transmission of charisma and forms of leadership, the specific role of Confucianism that makes it possible for the group to defuse tension with Chinese authorities and, even sometimes, to cooperate with them. It also delves into Yiguandao’s well-structured expansionary strategies and in its quasi-diplomatic efforts to navigate the troubled waters of cross-strait politics. To readers primarily interested in Chinese studies, this work offers new perspectives on state–religion relationships in China, the Taiwan issue seen through the lenses of religion, or one of the modern and contemporary fates of Confucianism—that is, its appropriation by redemptive societies and religious organizations. But it also addresses theoretical questions that are relevant to completely different contexts and thus contributes to the fields of sociology, anthropology, and psychology of religion.

Lo, Dennis. The Authorship of Place. Hong Kong University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5790/hongkong/9789888528516.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The Authorship of Place is the first monograph dedicated to the study of the politics, history, aesthetics, and practices of location shooting for Taiwanese, Mainland Chinese, and coproduced art cinemas shot in rural communities since the late 1970s. Lo argues that rural location shooting, beyond serving aesthetic and technical needs, constitutes practices of cultural survival in a region beset with disruptive social changes, including rapid urbanization, geopolitical shifts, and ecological crises. In response to these social changes, auteurs like Hou Xiaoxian, Jia Zhangke, Chen Kaige, and Li Xing transformed sites of film production into symbolically meaningful places of collective memories and aspirations. These production practices ultimately enabled auteurs to experiment with imagining communities in novel and contentious ways. Guiding readers on a cross-strait tour of prominent shooting locations for the New Chinese Cinemas, this book shows how auteurs sought out their disappearing cultural heritage by reenacting lived experiences of nation building, homecoming, and cultural salvage while shooting on-location. This was an especially daunting task when auteurs encountered the shooting locations as spaces of unresolved historical, social, and geopolitical contestations, tensions which were only intensified by the impact of filmmaking on rural communities. This book demonstrates how complex circumstances surrounding location shooting were pivotal in shaping representations of the rural on-screen, as well as the production communities, institutions, and industries off-screen. Bringing together cutting-edge perspectives in cultural geography and media anthropology, this work revises Chinese film history and theorizes ground-breaking approaches for investigating the cultural politics of film authorship and production.

Ji, You. The Indian Ocean. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199479337.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter gives a compelling view from one of China’s leading naval analysts on China’s evolving naval strategy in the Indian Ocean. You Ji provides an unusually cogent analysis of the evolution of Chinese naval strategy over the last several decades, its concerns about US strategies to contain China within the First and Second Island Chains and the imperatives that are driving China into the Indian Ocean. You argues that China’s long term strategy in the Indian Ocean is to move from selective sea denial to a strategy of selective sea control. This will likely require a chain of logistical facilities across the Indian Ocean, although somewhat different from the ‘String of Pearls’ narrative. You argues that while China’s strategy is not intended to challenge India’s interests in the Indian Ocean, it also rejects the idea of the Indian Ocean being India’s.
