Abstract:
This book explores the formation, development, and characteristics of modern China's finance, focusing especially on Guangdong province as a case study to illustrate both the macro-level trends and the micro-level reality. The chronological range of this book is mainly from the late Qing period to the early Republican Era ending in 1937, when the full-scale Second Sino-Japanese War broke out. After the concept of modern finance was introduced to China for the first time in the late Qing period, the efforts to build modern finance continued in the Republican Era both nationally and locally. But this process was interrupted by the outbreak of the war against Japan in 1937 and, having been derailed, did not subsequently recover due to the subsequent civil war between the Kuomintang and the Chinese Communist Party. This interrupted process of financial modernization was resumed with Reform and Opening-up, launched in 1978. Therefore, in order to illustrate the structural transformation and persistent characteristics of China’s fiscal system, this book also includes discussions of the early Qing period and current Chinese finance.

Harlamova, Yuliya. The struggle for Eurasia in the focus of transport geostrategies. ru: INFRA-M Academic Publishing LLC., 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.12737/1243826.

Full text
Abstract:
The monograph examines the problems that play an important role in the processes of constructing transport geostrategies on the Eurasian continent. In the processes of redrawing the world's spaces, the transport sphere (along with financial and information) often acts as a catalyst for modern transformations. It is emphasized that thanks to transport networks, the economy on a global scale is structured in a completely specific way. To increase the potential of any state and society (the peoples living in it), the creation of conditions for communication community (in the broadest sense) is an integral component of its sustainability. The thesis is proved that the direction of the flow of many global integration or disintegration processes corresponding to the new world conditions depends on the reliable and fast operation of transport communications. Special attention is paid to the concept of the modern Chinese state "One Belt , One Road", which the Chinese elite actively promotes in the external space. Some aspects of the economic and transport development of the Arctic region in the context of the functioning of the Northern Sea Route are considered. Due attention is paid to the special role of Central Asia in the context of these problems, as well as the implementation of the international transport project "North - South". For students and teachers, as well as for anyone interested in economics and politics.

Abstract:
The socio-economic development of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) can be seen as a tectonic shift in the global order. One of the oldest civilizations, which had withdrawn from the pillars of the international system, China has tentatively rejoined organizations of global governance, yet, in spite of its huge population and its growing economic clout, it has not fully embraced the concept. This chapter analyses China’s changing foreign policy attitude and approach in light of the changing global economic order following the 2008 financial crisis, as well as its contributions to reform of global governance, especially in the context of the G20. The cultural and ideological roots of Chinese proposals and critiques of G20 policies are outlined and compared with the underlying Western principles of the current system of global governance.

Abstract:
Chapter 12 provides a look at China, which has not been included in our analysis of largely developed economies. Chinese growth has been extraordinary with stunning effects, largely improvements, although pollution has worsened for a substantial share of the world's lower-income population. The Chinese model may well be unique, a complicated mix of socialist structures, state ownership of some large enterprises and much of finance, dirigiste state-led and state-financed development of the private sector, and some outright privatization at both the small and grand scale. But China faces the challenge of financialization that has some commonalities with financialization in the rest of the world yet with some uniquely Chinese features. There have been some precursors of financial trouble and ambiguity about the state as the final guarantor of private debt. Some of the key players and episodes as Chinese capitalism enters its financialized stage are profiled.

Abstract:
Since the early 1990s, China has built more megaprojects than any other country in the world. This chapter examines the economic and sociopolitical conditions in China that have made the massive investment and construction of megaprojects possible, such as the deregulatory reforms in the land and housing sector and the rise of local investment corporations for megaproject financing. The chapter also compares megaproject developments before and after 2008—a tumultuous year marking both the Beijing Olympics and a global economic recession. Before 2008, the hosting of mega-events often legitimized the construction of megaprojects. After 2008, the recession became the new legitimizing tool, as the Chinese government implemented a large stimulus program that directed more investment in infrastructural megaprojects. With the slowdown of the Chinese economy, many local governments today find themselves in deep debt from overinvestment in infrastructural megaprojects over the past two decades. Examples from Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou are used to illustrate the contested processes and mixed legacies of city building with megaprojects.

Fu, Xiaolan, Bruce McKern, and Jin Chen, eds. The Oxford Handbook of China Innovation. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190900533.001.0001.

Abstract:
The Oxford Handbook of China Innovation provides a contemporary and authoritative view of the role of innovation in China’s extraordinary emergence. The Handbook consists of chapters written by over sixty experts from universities and research institutions worldwide, who describe and analyze this phenomenon with criticism, discussion of policy issues, and views about further development. It focuses on the microeconomic factors in China’s growth, of which the critical force has been the steady drive for innovation. It identifies the many factors instrumental in the development of innovation and evaluates those that are specific to China’s context, and those applicable to other nations. The scope of topics is comprehensive, covering China's development policies, the place of innovation in national priorities, the components of the national innovation system, and the resources required for their effective deployment. These include the institutions and policies that provide incentives and support to technological development, including people, financial mechanisms, private ownership, rule of law, and culture. The issue of foreign influence is also addressed, including the evolution of policy toward inward foreign direct investment and knowledge transfer and China’s goals for outward foreign direct investment. The chapters include discussion of the capabilities and strategies of world-class Chinese innovators, together with emerging issues such as environmental remediation, green energy, digital innovation, open innovation, mass innovation, and China’s future science and technology policy. As China emerges as a contender for global leadership in many fields, this Handbook provides a foundation for informed conjecture regarding the challenges ahead.
