Chueng-Nainby, Priscilla. "Conceptualisation, or not? : an ethnographic study in describing early design collaboration between Western designers and Chinese designers." Thesis, Edinburgh Napier University, 2010. http://researchrepository.napier.ac.uk/Output/4416.

Abstract:
This thesis brings forth a perspective on the need for an isolated conceptual design phase in process models of designing. The perspective is made possible by identifying theories to describe designers in practice. The research sets out to describe concept negotiation during early design collaboration in cross-cultural teams of Western designers and Chinese designers. A series of ethnographic studies and in-depth interviews were carried out in a leading design practice in China on collocated and synchronous teams of Chinese designers from Mainland China, and Western designers from Germany, France and America. Themes were interpreted from the observations and interview through inductive analyses using a grounded theory approach and a hermeneutic circle. Silences among Chinese designers were first observed during design meetings, instead of verbal discussion in an argumentative process as anticipated by the social process of negotiation. Socio-linguistic reasons are understood to be influential but rectifiable by both Western and Chinese designers. Instead, a pattern of their differences in concept articulation became evidential and brought about a subsequent hermeneutic turn to also describe concept generation. The description on their cognitive patterns found dichotomies in creative processes between Western and Chinese designers. Specifically it was found that Chinese designers tend to ideate and Western designers tend to conceptualise. To overcome the dichotomies, the company's elaborate design process with an abstract-concrete progression was simplified into a situationist design cycle in which designing happens in a creative space. A literature review on design processes identified the isolated conceptual design phase as a fixated ideal from 1980s design models. Crucially, the conceptual design phase with an abstract-concrete progression is equated with the early design stage when studying designers in collaboration. Conceptualisation and concepts remain very much influential today. The dichotomies in creative processes between Western designers and Chinese designers brought to light an epistemological comparison between the rationalist and the situationist. The dichotomies were at first posed as difficulties but later overcome by the cross-cultural teams by making their practice flexible without specific design process. Instead of commonly studying designers at the conceptual design stage and analysing design concept, this thesis identified the designers' differences in creative processes as factors to be considered when studying designers in collaboration.

Abstract:
This is a qualitative study, and the purpose is to examine and gain a deeper understanding of China’s school system. Results from international comparative studies, such as the PISA survey and the TIMSS study, show that Chinese students have the highest mathematical scores. This evoked our interest and led to the beginning of this study. The research material comes from observations at three schools and interviews with in-service teachers, pre-service teachers and a head teacher in Hohhot, China. The results and the conclusion of this study shows that the content in the Chinese curriculum is comprehensive and does not give much time to individualize the lessons. The Chinese school system is very exam-oriented, and together with the pressure from the society and their parents, the students are forced to spend a lot of time to study. Another conclusion to this study is that pre-service teachers in China do not have much teacher practice at schools, but they study a lot of mathematics and methodology separately at the university.

Dai, Hongwu. "A contemporary teashop design based on Chinese traditions." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/44893.

Full text
Abstract:
Tea is the world's oldest and currently most popular beverage in the world. Tea drinking has long been an important aspect of Chinese culture and has evolved as an art form called the "tea ceremony". With the growing interest in Asian culture, ethnic food, and the health benefits of tea, the tea market in the United States has increased dramatically. These developments, along with the recent growth in coffeehouses/shops, indicate a potential for similar success for teashops. The purpose of this study was to design a contemporary teashop deriving design inspiration from traditional Chinese culture and teahouse design. An existing site in a university town was selected for the study. Historical factors were identified through review literature and visual records of historic teahouses and architecture. Photos of contemporary Chinese teahouses provided information on teahouse operation and layout of functional areas. Observation of four local coffee shops was completed to collect data on function and design. Data were used to determine the workable solutions for a teashop designed for an American market. Based on the data collected, a design concept and programming requirements were developed. Design solutions that were found to be suitable and advantageous to enhance the concept were incorporated into the proposed design. Interior space layout, teashop logo, lighting fixtures, and façade design were developed. The design solutions were presented through plans, elevations, detail drawings, and perspective drawings.

Dong, Ren Wen. "The application of traditional Chinese aesthetic principles to contemporary international design." Thesis, University of Bedfordshire, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10547/344358.

Abstract:
The Application of Traditional Chinese Aesthetic Principles to Contemporary International Design. This is a submission by publication consisting of 13 major design projects and an accompanying research report. China is undergoing phenomenal economic growth that is having a major impact on the social and cultural development of the Republic. Accompanying the growth is an unprecedented urbanisation of the population and expansion of the cities. This has meant an explosion in the building industries. At the same time China is moving towards the central position in the global economy that also has huge cultural implications. This is the context in which I have pursued my professional practice as an interior and architectural designer. Some of the questions I have been attempting to address through my practice arise directly out of this context. In the fast expansion of the field of interior design that has accompanied this growth it is vital that Chinese designers are aware of the cultural context of their work. Is it possible for Chinese designers working in the developing international context of contemporary design projects in China to make a unique contribution to the field that is specifically Chinese? This presentation of my practice will provide a cohesive argument for an approach to design in the international arena that remains specific to the cultural and temporal context of its origins. I will specifically demonstrate solutions I have found to the application of ancient Chinese aesthetic principles to contemporary international design problems. As practice-based research I have given much thought to the methodologies I have employed. I will provide a detailed outline of these 'action' research methodologies and definitions of the types of knowledge employed in the following report. The visual evidence is also accompanied by descriptions of the projects including the briefs, design solutions and specific Chinese characteristics. The presentation of my practice in this form provides evidence of the ways in which cultural specificity can be maintained within the international design arena and makes a meaningful contribution to debates and knowledge in the area of cultural diversity and design.

Abstract:
The interests in the similarities and differences between Chinese characters and English words lead me to study how various shapes between two languages will affect designs significantly. The curiosity inspired the development of making these two different language forms appear more aesthetically compatible. Moreover, from questioning the characteristics of Chinese and English, I developed interest in recreating a new multi-purpose visual language system which can be read in both Chinese and English without losing any character's original form. Through out my study, I rediscover the meaning and origin behind Chinese and English character, rethink the history and explore the formation of the characters. The interactions between oriental and occidental letters create a new series of forms that serves as a bridge between the visual and the verbal, and brought a fresh visual language to the surrounding world.

Abstract:
Purpose: The purpose with this paper is to improve the understanding for companies on what influences female Chinese consumers in the age 20-25 year old to buy luxury goods. Research question: What behaviors do 20-25 year old Chinese women consumers have in relationship to luxury goods? Method: The study is mainly consisting of a quantitative web-survey that consists of 100 respondents. The survey was addressed to young women that came from China, in the ages 20-25 year old. It was of interest to get answers both from young women that are luxury consumers and from those who are not, in order to get a hint of how they relate to luxury goods in general. As a complement to the survey, a qualitative focus group interview was made with five young Chinese women in the age 22-24 year old. Theory: The theoretical framework includes theories about; luxury, reference group, family, roles and status, motivation, attitudes and beliefs and the buyer decision process. Conclusion: The results show that young Chinese women’s consumer behavior is in some aspect in the process of change. For example, they now want to stand out, but subconsciously they still act upon what earlier theories have claimed, to be like everyone else, because it is firmly rooted in their behaviors. This shows that they are in the process of a behavioral change towards acting more individualistic. Young Chinese women's consumer behavior is characterized by the fact that they have a positive attitude towards buying more luxury goods in the future, both for personal reasons but also because it will help their career and make them seem more professional. Although, they consider there to be some risks with buying luxury goods, both social and economic. Concerning the buyer decision process they research about the product, either by reading magazines looking on the Internet or talking to their friends. Today almost every purchase, regarding luxury, is planned and often based on personal opinions but sometimes with the regards of others opinions, like friends and family.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the complexity of cultural translation of visual language, considering writing systems both a profound shaping force and microcosmic reflection of the central elements of its culture. It focuses on the case of Chinese pictogram in Western everyday fashion; fashion is treated here as a site where the conceptual, aesthetic and cultural dynamics vividly interact with one another. This work probes what tensions are lost and added to the pictograms' cultural meaning in the process of translation, bearing in mind the two different aesthetic philosophies underlining Western and Chinese calligraphies. Seeing the complexity in the change of tensions, the thesis argues that nothing remains "authentic" in cultural translation, but the value of the encounter lies in the possibilities for each culture to reconsider itself in the corrective mirror of the Other.

Abstract:
The project developed a web-based application that provides a user-friendly interface to assist practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine in determining the correct diagnosis. Traditional Chinese Medicine On-line Diagnosis System (TCMODS) allows a diagnostician to enter a patient's symptoms using a series of questionnaires to determine health status, which will then be stored in the database as part of the patient's medical records. The database will also differentiate among the patterns of syndromes known in traditional Chinese medicine and search and match these with the patient's data to the known uses of Chinese herbs. TCMODS will then generate that patient's medical record, including the symptoms of the ailment, the syndrome, and a prescription. User identification and access privileges were differentiated in order to maintain the integrity of the patient medical data and the information needed to make the diagnoses. The project was designed to function across platforms and was written using HTML, JSP, and MySQL.

Abstract:
Population aging is occurring all over the world as fertility declines and life expectancy rises.China, as the developing country with the largest population, is also experiencing thisphenomenon. However, the pension insurance system and health care system for theelderly has not been developed well enough. There is a growing need for the society toaddress the current living situation and needs of the elderly in China. The theoretical framework is design for aging and ritual designs. Sustainable thinking andhuman centered design thinking is used through the whole design process. By applyingcollaborate design methods such as interviews, some important aspects in old people’s lifewere been found out and medicine issues is the one of them. Most elderly have the issue offorgetting to take medicines and taking wrong medicines. These issues may cause greatdangers to the elderly with specific diseases such as high blood pressure. In the end, with the interaction and direct conversation with the Chinese elderly, the designsolution to medicine issues shapes the design proposal: a medicine calendar. The medicinecalendar can help the elderly remember to take their medicine properly and improve theirexperience of taking medicines. It can also draw the attention of the society to take theseniors’ life experience into account.

Xie, Yi. "Chinese bench : a research on multi-function furniture design." Thesis, University of Iowa, 2016. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/3230.

Abstract:
Nowadays, the world is facing a lot of serious problems because of the population explosion and the resource shortage. Overcrowded living area creates economic and social issues, and the limitation of material choices not only lowers the quality of house holding merchandise, but also leads to the raise of the price. Due to all these complicated factors, multi-function furniture becomes one of the solutions for space sustainability. Multi-function furniture combines different functions into one piece to control the material consumption, creates opportunities for the interaction between the object and human, and effectively save user's space. At the same time, the price of multi-function furniture, by contrast, is usually more reasonable than purchasing several furniture pieces together. This kind of design becomes more and more popular among young generation, and it is the trend of today's furniture design. Through the exploration of human's living habits and the study of contemporary multi-function furniture, I designed a piece of furniture, Chinese Bench with the concept of space and material sustainability. This thesis is based on the field study of ergonomics and furniture design theory, illustrates the final prototypes of my multi-functional furniture. The design can be served as sit, table and storage, and it emphasizes the importance of space use and valuable customization for user at the same time. The design aims to provide a more efficient living mode in limited space, and reduce the material consumption. At the same time, the pattern and graphic forms are adapted in this design; they can meet people's need for beauty and function at the same time, let the user obtain the sympathy and entertainment from the design

Abstract:

The emergence of China as a rising economic power has surprised many pundits and commentators around the world. It first gained its status as one of the largest manufacturing centers in the world, creating companies from toy makers to networking gear manufacturers, which successfully used their low cost advantage to compete against firms based in developed countries. As western countries including the U.S. started to attribute China's success to the abundance of low cost labor, a few Chinese firms rose up to challenge the dominance of multinational corporations. In the high-tech industries, in particular, some firms have started to combine their low wage advantage with sophisticated end-to-end strategies by ramping up competencies in important areas in the value chain, including research and development, manufacturing and supply chain management, marketing, and strategy. This thesis examines the competitive advantage and disadvantage of Chinese high-tech industries by studying a number of firms in the information technology sectors.
(cont.) It demonstrates that the competitive advantages of those industries include low cost structures, a pool of highly skilled engineers and scientists, a sophisticated science and technology infrastructure, a growing domestic market with enormous potential, and a cluster of related high-tech industries that benefit each other. The thesis also reveals that most Chinese high-tech firms still lack financial capital, brand recognition, talents, managerial competencies, and technological capabilities. The thesis concludes by offering a set of recommendations to Chinese high-tech firms to help them become more respectable global players. In the meantime, this work also proposes a different set of strategies that US high-tech firms can use to gain the "next" innovative advantage in this extremely competitive global business environment.

Abstract:
Cultural and creative industries are a growing and profitable sector in the UK. The industry blends historical culture with modern creative design to promote one's culture and to make profits. A cultural feature is the main characteristic of a cultural product; however most of the current cultural products are printed or decorated in a way that lacks any emotional or meaningful cultural link with consumers. Emotional engagement is the key factor when people make their decisions. Therefore, a design toolkit was created to assist designers to enhance an emotional connection between consumers and products. the research approaches involved a literature review to classify categories of cultural features, a questionnaire to measure emotional responses to Chinese cultural products, expert interviews to develop the toolkit, and workshops to validate the toolkit. This research is the first study to highlight emotional aspect of cultural products in order to enrich user experience. The contributions of the research are investigating human emotions of cultural products and developing a novel toolkit to support designers when creating cultural products.

Abstract:
We are constantly asking how can we communicate with perfume? This sensory language uses the sign perfume in a device and as a language because the perfume is a system of signs that form an olfactory language in Western culture. In the first part, we compare this argument to the Chinese culture, and we observe that the scent seems to be a sign that can belong to a system of signs producing meaning, in this far eastern culture. Design, western production, seems strongly influenced by the culture of the Far East sign. The second part studies the manipulations of the olfactory language to produce meaning: by the material, the images, the structure. The “clichés” that afford us to create projects of smell design allows us to produce the codes of a new language, olfactory, to produce a shareable and common meaning. Forms of communication that emerge from our thesis are written by the scent, not on a backing, but in space, and a pictographic and ideographic form: a pictorial writing to signify an idea. This form of communication typical logographic writing hieroglyphics and Chinese Character, would not be exotic. The West also produces and manipulates such language, such writing, but not only on a flat surface. This applies to perfume, but can also be any other production of design
