Full textThe subject addressed in this research concerns access to independent reading for the learners of Chinese as a foreign language. For a learner who is a native user of alphabetical writing systems, Chinese is a “geographically, culturally and linguistically distant language” (Bellassen, 2014). Therefore, it seemed necessary to explore under which conditions a learner starts independent reading and to establish a “Threshold of characters to Access First Readings in Autonomy” (TAFRA). This study is based on an investigation conducted with a study sample consisting of over 300 learners with whom we try to establish a language biography as well as to constitute a corpus of authentic first-read texts. The analysis of this material allows to better understand how a non-reader becomes an independent reader and to establish the “TAFRA” list. This study provides interesting insight into future learning as well as pedagogy

Full textHistoriography has always been a major discipline in Imperial China, producing among other works the encyclopedic corpus known as the Twenty-Six Standard Histories. This dissertation aims at examining the place dedicated to medicine and physicians in this corpus. Written following a very specific modus operandi, the Standard Histories provide the readers numerous biographies of experts in medicine (yi 醫). As we know today, these texts were more prescriptive than descriptive, and one should not base any serious historical study of medicine on these sources alone. The question then is how to make the most out of the large amount of information they bring to scholarly attention. To answer this question, I first propose a synthetic overview of historical writings in China, of the textual genres to which they belong, with a special focus on the biographical genre, and then undertake a statistic and analytic study of the place dedicated to medicine in Chinese historical records. The second part of the dissertation deals more specifically with the one hundred and forty-two biographies of physicians contained in the Standard Histories: after having identified, classified and analyzed all of their contents, I set out the uses that can be made of this huge piece of information in the fields of textual criticism, social history, and the history of medicine

Full textThis work deals with the life of an exceptional Chinese woman, Yuding, who was born in 1928 in China. It questions the way she has taken up totally paradoxical ways of life, kinship, and union, while living through incredibly uneven times - the beginning of the Republican era, the Second Sino-Japanese war, the civil war, the revolutionary era, the socialist society, and the current globalization. Yuding, presently 87, has kept faith in the venture proposed by the Maoist China, despite underlying wounds left by this violent period. Born in a leading family broken in to Confucian orthopraxy (rituality, morality, worship of the ancestors), Yuding then undergoes the influence of another “formatting” this of Maoism and its revolutionary doctrine. Very quickly, the traditional ideology of “filial devotion” passed on by her parents makes way for complete devotion to the Communist Party. Passionate activist from the Liberation, she leads an active life within the Women's Federation. French interpreter, she is brought round to traveling as much in Europe as in Africa, at a period during which very few persons were going out China. Yet, being an intellectual, she is sent to a labour camp “School of the Seventh of May” in 1968, but she doesn't lose her unquestioning adherence to the Party ideology. There soon won't be anybody from her generation, who was pioneer in the building of the People's Republic of China, to give accounts of this era. Her biography is a testimony of this exceptional experience

Full textThis dissertation deals with "the Chinese mind", which means the national character of China. Its main argument is that psychological variable is the key to understand and to explain how China behaves. In fact, the author uses a "psycho-cultural" approach to analyze Chinese political behaviors and diplomatic crises. To do so, two heads of State, Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao, are studied. The behaviors of these Chinese leaders are therefore supposed to refer to the State’s behaviors. Empirically, two exercises are involved to psychologically study these political figures: their biography for one part (in the first part of the dissertation) and their conducts during bilateral crises for another (in the second part of the dissertation) – The author collects hundreds of public and private speeches of the two Chinese leaders in order to scientifically analyze their psychological patterns. Alongside the content analysis, the author heavily relies on a quantitative method, the discourse analysis, to decode the speeches of Jiang and Hu from 1989 to 2011 and to assess, at a distance, the two Chinese leaders’ psychocultural profile. Seven concepts the most pronounced in the political culture of China are selected in the exercise. These elements are treated as indices to generate quantitative data from speeches and to test the validity of such “psychocultural” hypothesis. These seven concepts are: nationalism-patriotism, harmony, hierarchy, filial piety, face, guanxi (interpersonal relationship), and the fear of luan (chaos). Combined qualitative and quantitative analysis, this research successfully proves the constant influence of "psychoculture" in China’s behaviors, particularly in the circumstances of diplomatic crises

This study aims to examine whether equivalence effect of translation of the characteristics of stream-of-consciousness is achieved in both Chu Nai-chang’s and Chen Hui-hua’s Chinese translations of Orlando: A Biography. Based on the semantic translation method proposed by Peter Newmark, the adaption of this book is the first Woolf-related movie released in Taiwan and considered to be an important work familiarized by the Taiwanese underlining the importance of studying on the book’s translations. In addition, there are few studies of translations of stream of consciousness on this novel owing to putting too much focus on its feminism. The abovementioned reasons explain why this book is chosen for further study. According to Professor Li Gen-fang’s study published in 2013, six distinguishable characteristics of stream-of-consciousness are found in Orlando: A Biography. They are categorized into two parts for discussion, including poetic languages and cinematic elements. This study adopts semantic translation to tell whether the six features of stream of characteristics in the original are completely presented as they should have in Chinese translations. Two results are concluded after six special features of stream of consciousness under study are comprehensively analyzed. First, the two translations basically take advantage of the communicative translation to deal with stream of consciousness. However, only the “image demonstration” is completely represented in Chu’s translation version. Second, in order to match target-language readers’ reading habits, both translations basically are translated in a too concise style that leads to the disappearance of these characteristics, even resulting in omission and inaccuracy. Therefore, neither of the translations achieves the fulfillment of the equivalence effect. The translations of Orlando: A Biography in Taiwan fail to maintain the artistic value of Woolf’s creative writing so that domestic readers are unable to experience diverse features of stream of consciousness. Based on the conclusions, it is sincerely hoped that this study can provide translators with some constructive advice and extend research direction to investigate Woolf’s unique writing style on the stream of consciousness.
"晚清英雄傳記譯介研究: A study of translated biographies of heroes in late Qing dynasty." 2015. http://library.cuhk.edu.hk/record=b6115624.
Late Qing Period witnessed an unprecedented boom of translated biographies, especially those focusing on Western heroes, but till now most texts have not received sustained critical attention from scholars in Chinese studies. From today’s point of view, those translated biographies not only portray new heroes, but also disseminate new ideas and new structure of feeling, which necessitate a thorough and in-depth research. My dissertation, based on a full-scale survey of the above-mentioned translated biographies, attempts to explore how late Qing intellectuals appropriated and recast foreign texts, images of Western heroes and alien ideas, and how they transformed traditional Chinese hero models by integrating a wide range of indigenous and foreign resources. I would like to focus on four groups of key texts by considering their impact, originality, and the influence of their originals: the biographies of Columbus, Garibaldi, Bismarck and Nelson translated or adapted by Liang Qichao, his anonymous colleagues, Lin Wanli and the journalist of an illustrated daily newspaper published in Shanghai.
My dissertation consists of five chapters. Chapter One examines the genealogy of Western heroes constructed by late Qing intellectuals. I will demonstrate that although Meiji Japanese biographies had a dominant influence, late Qing translators showed a strong autonomy when selecting texts for translation to meet their political and cultural concerns. From Chapter Two to Chapter Five, I will center on the biographies of four heroes, also representing four roles Liang Qichao played in shaping late Qing translated biographies, and four approaches of late Qing translators’ integration of indigenous and foreign thoughts. My cases studies begin with the translated biographies of Columbus, and my discussion will focus on the influence of the missionaries’ discourse of knowledge and Liang Qichao’s discourse of public morality (gongde) on the translated biographies. Special attention will be given to Liang Qichao’s construction of adventurous spirit (jinqu maoxian) on the basis of Meiji Japanese discourse. By appropriating Liang’s concept as well as Confucianism ideas, late Qing translators portrayed Columbus as an embodiment of public morality. Chapter Three pays attention to the translated biographies of Garibaldi. My analysis covers a wide range of texts from Kang Youwei and Liang Qichao’s early discourse on Chinese knight-errant (xia), Liang’s translated biographies of Garibaldi, to various derivative texts. This chapter will examine how late Qing translators revitalize and transform the Chinese minor tradition of knight-errant worship by assimilating Confucian discourse and nationalism discourse. Chapter Fours will give closer scrutiny to the translated biographies of Bismarck, a problematic figure whose use of diplomatic sleight of hand and political trickery contradicts Confucius’ moral doctrine. However, fascinated by his great achievement of German unification, late Qing translators all attempt to defend Bismarck by appropriating concepts of Pre-Qin Philosophers (zhuzi xue) and nationalism. Chapter Five discusses the biographies of Nelson. Liang Qichao’s essays marked the beginning of interpreting the military figure as an embodiment of honor and adventurous spirit. Lin Wanli and other translators, under Liang’s influence, strove to redefine the concept of honor and bravery by drawing elements from Confucianism. They also put a lot of emphasis on Nelson’s love affairs and in so doing, introduced elements of popular fiction and drama into biographical writings.

Full textThe increasing migration is a challenge for public health, combining the complexity of the health determinants of immigrants with the heterogeneity of the indigenous population. The detailed study of their impact, whether for the country of origin, transit or reception, or for the migrant and autochthonous population, becomes relevant. Based on this configuration, this Master's Dissertation aims to understand the trajectories adopted by Chinese immigrant in Portugal when they seek health care - be it disease prevention and health maintenance, or cure of the disease. The methodological option relied on the use of life history - following the life trajectory of a young Chinese woman living in Martim Moniz - where the intention was to articulate the dimensions of her migratory process with the concepts of health / illness. The issue of disease prevention does not find a positive answer - assuming that the interlocutor does not perform preventive health care, while as a resolution to health problems, two possible routes are suggested: on the one hand, to resort to the permanent care/urgencies, another to return to the country of origin. In the first reality, we must take into account the inoperability of a health system that places barriers to immigrants' access and immersion in a social and cultural context that assumes itself as deeply different from the one of origin; the second reality involves fundamental elements as the speed of responses, their effectiveness and, it should be emphasized, the familiarity in the treatments found in the country of origin. It was also noticed that the health care trajectories are not calculated in a random way, but rather by following their own dynamics, in a constant negotiation between the discourse of rupture with the ancestry and the need to return home.
