Abstract:
This article intends to understand the motivation, strategy and effects of the economic diplomacy exercised by the EU and China in their forty years-old relationship. The article examines the EU-China economic history which can be divided into four periods: the starting-up period (1975-1988), the 'Low Tide' Period (1989-1992), the 'Honeymoon' period (1993-2005), and the 'Turbulent' period (2006 till now). The cases of economic diplomacy chosen here are those of strategic importance, i.e. which had a direct bearing on the overall development of EU-China relations, instead of the specific nitty-gritty negotiations of technical nature. The last part summarizes the characteristics of the EU's economic diplomacy in its long-time relationship with China.

Abstract:
Yasheng Huang presents a detailed and meticulous analysis of foreign direct investment (FDI) in China during the reform period. The author should be commended for collecting and analysing descriptive information on China-based FDI that is useful to practitioners as much as to researchers, and for arguing a seemingly intriguing thesis about China's economic ascent. He also presents a number of industry cases, some of which, like that on the Chinese handicraft industry, are particularly captivating. Yet, at the end of the day, what this book does best in my mind is illustrate the confines of traditional academic paradigms when faced with real-life phenomena that are too broad and complex to be captured by a single lens. This is, it itself, an important service.

Abstract:
Some American economists have contemplated taking a visiting academic post at a Chinese University. This article is to help inform an American economist what some facets of the experience may be like. There is a literature review, which includes the work of Gregory Chow who was one of the most influential economists, who ascertained the economic education needs of China, once Deng Xiaoping wished to implement a much less Maoist economic model. The experience of an American economist who was a visiting faculty member in China for almost twelve years serves as the basis of this story. The results of this article several cities in China have produced an outlook of what contemplating American faculty to be mindful of. One can learn a lot through assignments in China. Knowing how to convey a respectful attitude towards Chinese will usually increase the respect the Chinese show visiting American economics faculty.

This research paper presents an analytical overview of ChinaPakistan bilateral trade, Free Trade Agreements and Chinese Foreign Direct Investment in Pakistan. Geo-economics has become a focal point in inter-state relations. Initially, geo-economics was analyzed by the theorists as an element of Geostrategic politics along with other elements for projecting power. According to realists and Neorealists, military power is the primary element of exercising power in global politics. Paul Kennedy was one of the leading scholars who discussed the relation between national power and economic resources of the country in his work entitled; The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers.

Abstract:
Geo-economics is becoming an integral component of inter-state relations. States are employing economic instruments to project their power, thus, redefining their traditional relations with other states. Pakistan and China view each other as strategic partners. Over the decades, China has extended considerable economic, military and technical assistance to Pakistan. As both neighbours expand their economic relationship through infrastructure development and trade corridors, including the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), such cooperation will directly interact with their existing strategic partnership. Beijing and Islamabad have been pursuing their geo-strategic interests in a framework that is progressively being shaped by geo-economics. The Chinese role and interests, in shaping the regional security order, are increasing. Geo-economic instruments are being employed to achieve geo-strategic objectives in a region, which is already marked by conflict and instability. This study explores how expanding economic relationship between Beijing and Islamabad will influence the bilateral strategic engagement, and in turn, impact the dynamics of the regional security.

Abstract:
Recent research has stressed the role of historical events on economic development. This thesis aims at understanding impacts of historical events on China's current economic outcomes. The second chapter analyzes the effect of the number of brothers an individual has on that individual's household savings rate under the current underdeveloped household financial market in urban China. I show that having an additional brother reduces an individual's household savings rate by at least five percentage points. Brothers help households by (1) sharing risks, providing a source of informal borrowing and (2) sharing the cost of supporting parents. In the third and fourth chapter I investigate the long-term impact of the send-down policy. Under the send-down policy (1968--1978) during the Chinese Cultural Revolution, more than 16 million youths were forced to move to rural areas and carry out hard manual labor. I find that the sent-down males were significantly more likely to have had education upgrading after the Cultural Revolution. Conditional on education upgrading, the sent-down males earn higher income than the non-sent-down males who also received education upgrading.

Abstract:
Most studies of monasticism have concentrated on the religious discourse of asceticism as a withdrawal from the secular world. Based on three months of field research in a Taoist monastery at a holy mountain in Wenzhou, China, however, this thesis describes the close relationship between the monastery and the local society and economy. Social and economic factors influence the decisions of individuals to become monks or nuns. Through networks of lay disciples, the monastery maintains close social links to society. Furthermore, the monastery is intricately tied to the economy as a provider of ritual and tourist services. It is hoped that this thesis will contribute to a better understanding of the place of religious institutions in rural Chinese society.

Abstract:
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Economics, 2005.
Includes bibliographical references.
This dissertation is a collection of three independent essays in empirical development economics using data from China. In the first two chapters, I examine the determinants of choices within the household. In the first chapter, I estimate the causal effects of total income, relative female and relative male income on sex imbalance. The second chapter studies the effects of relaxations in the One Child Policy on sex ratios and family size and then exploits the exogenous variation in family size caused by the relaxations to estimate the causal effect of family size on school enrollment. The third chapter is a descriptive study of income inequality for top income earners in China during 1986-2002 and the potential redistributive effectiveness of progressive income taxation.

Abstract:
Chinese-sponsored Economic and Trade Cooperation Zones offer African countries opportunities for new sources of investment, employment, skills transfer and technology transfer that promote industrialisation. For more than 15 years, these economic zones have provided a window into the complexities of transforming African aspirations for industrialisation into realities. Through policy frameworks and incentives, Chinese firms have been encouraged to link with local economies. Despite varied outcomes, African support for industrial parks remains strong. To be sustainable, African Special Economic Zones need constructive partnerships and strong African governance, backed by high-quality data to inform both Chinese and African government decisions.
