Abstract:
Observations of the feeding behavior of Cirriformia filigera (Delle Chiaje, 1825) (Annelida: Polychaeta) from the intertidal zone of São Francisco and Engenho D'água beaches (São Sebastião, State of São Paulo) were made in the laboratory. This species, like other cirratulids, is a deposit feeder, feeding mainly on sediment surface with the aid of its grooved and ciliated palps, which are used to capture food particles. The worm lies just beneath the substrate surface in a J-shaped tube. When feeding, it extends up to 4 palps over the sediment surface, capturing food particles which pass down the groove of each palp directly to the mouth. Only fine sand grains are ingested. The worm frequently extends 4 branchial filaments into the overlying water for aeration. When it moves with the prostomium sideways, it collects and transports sand grains that pass backwards along its ventral region until reaching the middle part of its body. Next, the parapodia and palps move the sand grains to the dorsal posterior end of the animal, covering this area with sand. Some sand grains are also ingested as the worm moves.

Abstract:
This work focuses on the physical, chemical and metal characterization of the estuary waters of Oued Sebou during a long period of sand dredging. To do this, several physicochemical parameters were evaluated during periods 2007 and 2014-2016. The results showed that this estuary has a significant degree of pollution. The source of this pollution is diverse: urban waste, industrial waste, agricultural activities. This pollution is accentuated by the action of repeated dredging that increases the turbidity and the suspended solids content which covers the seabed during immersions that are covering the sediment and disturbs the physicochemical equilibrium of the estuary. So, indirectly this operation of dredging influences the parameters that are related to the amount and quality of materials suspended such as the dissolved oxygen content and orthophosphates and the brightness level in the water and over up the sediment.Indeed, for the majority of the physicochemical parameters assessed, the water of the estuary was belonging to a middle class, poor class or very poor class. Thus, the operation of dredging should consider the ecological balance of the coastal zone. Note also that the contents of assessed heavy metals are not worrisome. However, their risks might be amplified by the dredging operations.

Abstract:
AbstractRiver has an important role for human and other organisms, among them are as habitat of macrozoobenthos community and the utilization of the material, such as river sand and gravel for building material. Progo River is one of rivers which have sand mining activities almost all along the river. If this activity being done continuously, in a big amount and without a good supervision, it could lead to erosion, degradation and sedimentation in some specific parts. Therefore, this research has an aim to study the effects of sand mining activity towards the distribution and the abundance of macrozoobenthos community in Progo River, and also to study which Functional Feeding Group (FFG) is the most abundant and the physic-chimic parameter that affecting them. This research was conducted in three steps, sampling and preparation of macrozoobenthos’s sample, sample’s identification, and the measurement physicochemical parameter. Sand mining activity in Progo River effect indirectly towards macrozoobenthos by causing erosion and degradation in sand mining area as well as sedimentation in downstream. The most abundant FFG of macrozobenthos in sand mining area of Progo River are scraper and collector. Based on regression and Pearson correlation analysis the results show that phosphate correlated positively against the density of macrozoobenthos in the headwaters of Progo River, light intensity correlated positively against the density of macrozoobenthos in the midstream of the Progo River, and current velocity correlated positively against the density of macrozoobenthos in the downstream of the Progo River.

Abstract:
(Bioethics)

Abstract:

Abstract:
Mercury (Hg) is a global environmental contaminant that affects ecosystems. It has the particularity to biomagnify through the food web, and to bioaccumulate especially in tissues of top predators. Mercury has been identified to have detrimental effects on human and wildlife. Top predators from tropical ecosystems are particularly affected by Hg contamination due to artisanal small scale gold mining, which uses massive amounts of Hg in the gold extraction process. Crocodilians are top predators of tropical ecosystems and have been identified to accumulate high concentrations of Hg in their tissues. They are potentially good candidates to monitor Hg contamination, as they are long-living animals with low metabolic, and high tissue conversion rates, which favours the bioaccumulation of Hg. Additionally, they have a large repartition over tropical and sub-tropical ecosystems, which make large-scale Hg evaluation possible. My doctoral work focuses on the four caiman species that are present in French Guiana (the Black caiman Melanosuchus niger, the Dwarf caiman Paleosuchus palpebrosus, the Smooth-fronted caiman Paleosuchus trigonatus and the Spectacled caiman Caiman crocodilus). First, I have worked on Hg variation across different tissues obtained by minimally invasive methods, and investigated the influence of morphology and feeding ecology (by using stable isotope method) on Hg contamination in caimans. Second, I have investigated the impact of Hg contamination on physiological mechanisms, and the maternal transfer and its effects on neonates

Abstract:

Abstract:
Megakaryopoiesis is a complex process, which is initiated with the proliferation and the differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) into megakaryocytes (MK), followed by the maturation of MK and ended by platelet release. To describe the fates of HSC during ex vivo megakaryopoiesis, a new mathematical model was developed based on a 3-dimensional kinetic developmental program. To address this, a set of differential equations was applied to analyze the proliferation, differentiation and death kinetic rates of purified cord blood (CB)-CD34+ cells, immature and mature MKs, as well as platelet number and productivity. CB-CD34+ cells were placed in culture optimized for MK differentiation. The kinetic parameters were estimated for two incubation temperatures (37°C vs. 39°C). The regression results have been validated by assessing the parameter identifiability using local and global sensitivity analyses and confidence intervals, and compared using statistical tests and principal component analysis (PCA). Furthermore, PCA was applied on the solution matrix to construct a simplified MK differentiation pathway model, and to reveal dependencies among the model parameters. The proposed model provides insight into phenomena that would be otherwise difficult to interpret. MKs are unique among mammalian marrow cells as they polyploidize during their natural development. It is universally accepted that MK becomes polyploid by repeatedly deviating from normal cell cycling, where it ceases to complete cytokinesis and divide. To challenge this long-standing hypothesis and to obtain a more comprehensive picture of megakaryopoiesis, a long-term and large-field live cell imaging approach of in vitro MK culture was developed. Using CB- and bone marrow (BM)-CD34+ as starting cells, the direct observation of cells undergoing differentiation and maturation over a 5-day culture period is reported for the first time. Herein, direct visual proof that polyploid MKs can complete cytokinesis during its normal development is presented. This phenomenon was found not restricted to CB- as the BM-derived polyploid MK also underwent division. However the latter showed significantly lower proliferation rate. This new finding explains in part the unresolved issue of low ploidy levels observed in CB-MK and contests the notion that polyploid MKs do not divide.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Akiya Ogawa of Osaka Prefecture University found (Tetrahedron Lett. 2010, 51, 6580) that the Sm-mediated reductive coupling of a halide 1 with CO2 to give the carboxylic acid 2 was strongly promoted by visible light. Gregory C. Fu of MIT designed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2010, 49, 6676) a Ni catalyst for the coupling of a primary borane 4 with a secondary alkyl halide 3. James P. Morken of Boston College devised (Org. Lett. 2010, 12, 3760) conditions for the carbonylative conjugate addition of a dialkyl zinc to an enone 6 to give the 1,4-dicarbonyl product 7. Louis Fensterbank of the Institut Parisien de Chimie Moléculaire developed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2010, 49, 8721; not illustrated) a protocol for the conjugate addition of alkyl boranes to enones. Hyunik Shin of LG Life Science, Daejeon, and Sang-gi Lee of Ewha Womans University showed (Tetrahedron Lett. 2010, 51, 6893) that the intermediate from Blaise homologation of a nitrile 8 was a powerful nucleophile, smoothly opening an epoxide 10 to deliver 11. Sébastien Reymond and Janine Cossy of ESPCI ParisTech found (J. Org. Chem. 2010, 75, 5151) that FeCl3 smoothly catalyzed the coupling of an alkenyl Grignard 13 with the primary iodide 12. The Ti-mediated coupling of an alkyne 16 with an allylic alkoxide 15 (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 9576) developed by Glenn C. Micalizio of Scripps/Florida was the key step in the total synthesis (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 11422) of lehualide B. Huanfeng Jiang of the South China University of Technology observed (Chem. Commun. 2010, 46, 8049) that KI added to a bromoalkyne 18 to give the dihalide 19 with high geometric control. Haruhiko Fuwa of Tohoku University improved (Org. Lett. 2010, 12, 5354) the selective hydroiodination of a methyl alkyne 20 to 21. Takuya Kurahashi and Seijiro Matsubara of Kyoto University devised (Chem. Commun. 2010, 46, 8055) the Ni-catalyzed three-component coupling of an alkyne 22, methyl acrylate 23, and phenyl isocyanate to give the doubly homologated lactam 24. Patrick H. Toy of the University of Hong Kong showed (Synlett 2010, 1997; Org. Lett. 2010, 12, 4996 for a polymer with covalently attached base) that resin-bound triphenylphosphine participated efficiently in the Wittig coupling of 26 with an aldehyde 25.

Abstract:
Chapter 3 considers the degree to which virtuosic display had, despite Noverre’s revolutionary emphasis on expressivity, endured as a feature of balletic performance; indeed, the value of technical flair increased when Napoleon sought to establish meritocracy at the Paris Opera. Ballet’s newly virtuosic bodies exerted a profound influence on Byron and Shelley, whose exposure to ballet was extensive in the 1810s, when Byron managed the Drury Lane Theater and Shelley, a close affiliate of prolific dance critic Leigh Hunt, frequented the ballet both in England and, later, Italy. Chapter 3 argues that Byron and Shelley were inspired by, respectively, the contemporaneous ballet world’s intense regard for the virtuosity of the solo performer and its concomitant reliance on the collective brilliance of the corps de ballet, the dance troupe’s increasingly proficient plural “body.” It concentrates on Byron’s and Shelley’s longer works, including Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage, Don Juan, and Prometheus Unbound.

Abstract:
While its roots lie deep in Latin American culture and history, the New Song music was first brought to the attention of the world when totalitarian military regimes seized power in South America during the 1970s. Torture, death, persecution, or disappearance became the tragic fate of thousands of citizens including Violeta Parra and Victor Jara of Chile, popular and talented singer-songwriters (cantautores), the latter executed for his songs of justice and freedom. Other New Song artists were driven into exile to avoid a similar fate. Later, during the 1980s, a second, deadlier wave of terror swept through Central America in genocidal proportions. Again, New Song artists urgently sang about these horrific human rights violations, denouncing the perpetrators of this violence and telling the story of the struggle of people resisting. Beyond the desired social space in which to talk about horrific human rights abuses, there is a deep history of social commentary in musical and other performative traditions in Latin America.

Soto, María-Victoria, Misael Cabello, and Joselyn Arriagada-González. "Current Geodynamics and Evolutionary Trends of a Headland Bay Beach System in the Semi-Arid Coast of Chile." In Coastal Environments. IntechOpen, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5772/intechopen.94967.

Full text
Abstract:
The Chilean coast is controlled by the tectonics and structure, generating an irregular coastal landscape, with bays, marine terraces, sandy and gravel beaches, sand dune fields and Andean slopes, forming some mega cliffs that are attacked by waves. The Chilean coastline is shaped by headland bay beaches, with a dynamic coast modeled by south-western winds and south–north longshore current. We analyzed the case of the Coquimbo mega headland bay beach, which consists of four headland bay beaches. A methodological study was carried out on the morphometric parameters of the shoreline and the types of beaches dominated by waves along with geomorphological analysis of the coastal zone. We observed a mass transfer process from south to north. The northern sections of the bays are the places with the densest sand dune fields. This concentration of dunes occurs in each bay individually and in the mega bay as well. The sedimentary supply comes from Andean catchments to the shoreline and is transported and reworked by the longshore current to the northern area, where a huge sand field dune has developed, 120 km away from the mouth of Limarí River, the most southern catchment in the study area. In the mega bay, the current trend is a continuous sedimentary supply, despite the semi-arid conditions and the extreme drought that has affected the area since 2011. The study area is also a popular destination in Chile for beach tourism and is a place of interest for the mining industry.

Abstract:
Fortified churches between the eleventh and sixteenth centuries on Elba IslandAgainst the threat of Islamic, Norman and Greek pirates, starting from the eighth century, or due to conflicts with the Genoese, Catalans, Neapolitans and French, up to the English and Dutch corsairs from the sixteenth century, Elba island is organized with a respectable defensive apparatus, especially thanks to the Pisans and the Lordship of the Appiano. In addition to a system of fortresses, towers positioned on the shore of the beaches and watch towers placed on the mountain, the presence of some fortified churches from the eleventh century until the sixteenth century is very unusual: the church of San Niccolò in San Piero in Campo, the church of Sant’Ilario, the church of San Niccolò in Poggio, and of the church of Saints Martyrs Giacomo and Quirico in Rio nell’Elba. Main tasks of the research are: study of the transformations of the churches of San Niccolò in San Piero in Campo and of the church of Sant’Ilario, located on the southern slope of Monte Capanne, where was used the construction technique of the granite of the Elba; the way of communicating cultural heritage among scholars or tourists who are fascinated by such structures. Through an initial operation of instrumental survey with 3D laser scanning and drone photogrammetry it is possible to return the current 3D models of the churches. The second step goes on two main directions: on one hand identifying the conservative restoration operations for the fortified churches; on the other hand allowing the dissemination to a wider public of the history of the two fortified churches.
