Abstract:

Les échanges en surface dans le Modèle de Chimie Transport (MCT) multi-échelles MOCAGE de Météo-France comprennent à la fois les flux d'émissions et de dépôt sec d'espèces gazeuses. Une interface 2D a été développée entre MOCAGE et le modèle de prévisions météorologiques opérationnel français ARPEGE dans le but de calculer des flux à la surface réalistes Pour les émissions, un inventaire global est employé pour le moment; cet inventaire a été construit essentiellement à partir des inventaires des programmes IGAC/GEIA (International Global Atmospheric Chemistry / Global Emission Inventory Activity) et EDGAR (Emission Database for Global Atmospheric Research qui ont des résolutions temporelles annuelles, sai-sonnières ou mensuelles et une résolution spatiale de un degré. Le dépôt sec d'espèces gazeuses, y compris l'ozone, le dioxyde de soufre, les composés azotés, les composés organiques à longue et à courte durée de vie, a été paramétrisé selon [Wesely, 1989]. Le modèle calcule la vitesse de dépôt à partir de valeurs de trois résistances en série, les résistances aérodynamique, laminaire et de la surface. Ces résistances sont calculées en utilisant les champs de surface d'ARPEGE. Les champs liés à la végétation, tels l'indice foliaire, sont prescrits avec une résolution de un degré sur le globe et de cinq minutes sur l'Europe. Un certain nombre de modifications a été apporté à la paramétrisation de [Wesely, 1989], par exemple pour la formulation de la résistance stomatale et celle de la résistance de surface sur les surfaces mouillées. Les valeurs calculées de vitesse de dépôt ont été comparées à des observations et leurs distributions spatiales et temporelles ont été analysées sur deux saisons opposées (hiver et été, sur les différents domaines de MOCAGE, de résolution allant de 2 degrés pour le globe à 0.25 degrés pour la France.

Abstract:

A new soft chemistry preparation method of submicron — thick porous coatings of metallic silver is suggested for possible surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) applications. The method is based on facile deposition of diamminesilver (I) aerosols forming instantly a nanostructured layer by fast decomposition and self–reduction of [Ag(NH[Formula: see text] aqueous solutions onto surfaces of inorganic substrates under mild conditions of 280–300[Formula: see text]C in air. A strong difference in overall microstructures and related SERS signals of model analytes is found for substrates with different deposition time and in comparison with a standard magnetron deposition technique. It is demonstrated that the suggested method is predominant for formation of robust SERS substrates with a stable and reproducible SERS enhancement.

Abstract:

Feeding is one of major components that determines performance of Broiler chickens. However, high cost of Broiler chicken production in the recent times has been equally attributed to extra cost incurred from the importation of some feed additives that enhance performance of the birds. Therefore, exploring locally available plant materials that have been proven to posses antibiotics properties could be considered important in order to reduce cost of feeding due to importation of antibiotics. This study was conducted to evaluate effect of Bitterleaf (Vernonia amygdalina) meal in Broiler chicken diets on haematology and serum chemistry. Four experimental diets T (control, 0% BLM), T (5% BLM), T (10% 1 2 3 BLM) and T (15% BLM) were fed to 120 Broiler chickens replicated three times in a 4 Completely randomized design. Birds were offered feed and water ad-libitum. Data were collected on haematology and serum chemistry parameters. T was significantly (P<0.05) 3 higher than others on values of PCV and RBC. No significant (P>0.05) difference were recorded in Hb and WBC of T and T . Meanwhile, T was (P<0.05) higher than T and T in 2 3 4 2 3 WBC and T was (P<0.05) higher than that of T and T in MCH and MCHC. T and T were 2 3 4 2 3 (P<0.05) higher than T in lymphocytes, while T and T were (P<0.05) higher than T in the 4 3 4 2 monocytes. For serum chemistry, T was (P<0.05) higher than T and T in total protein and 3 2 4 albumin. There was (P<0.05) difference in the cholesterol content of the birds. Haematology and serum chemistry values recorded were within the standard ranges for good health condition of the Broiler chickens. Birds fed 5% Bitterleaf meal performed better than others. Therefore, 5% Bitterleaf meal in the diets of Broiler chickens producing birds with high immunity. L'alimentation est l'un des principaux composants qui déterminent les performances des poulets de chair. Cependant, le coût élevé de la production de poulets à griller ces derniers temps a également été attribué aux coûts supplémentaires occasionnés par l'importation de certains additifs alimentaires qui améliorent les performances des oiseaux. Par conséquent, l'exploration de matières végétales disponibles localement et dont il a été prouvé qu'elles possèdent des propriétés antibiotiques pourrait être considérée comme importante afin de réduire le coût de l'alimentation en raison de l'importation d'antibiotiques. Cette étude a été menée pour évaluer l'effet de la farine de Bitterleaf (Vernonia amygdalina) dans l'alimentation des poulets de chair sur l'hématologie et la chimie du sérum. Quatre régimes expérimentaux i. e T1 (témoin, 0 % BLM), T2 (5 % BLM), T3 (10 % BLM) et T4 (15 % BLM) ont été donnés à 120 poulets de chair répliqués trois fois dans un modèle entièrement randomisé. Les oiseaux ont reçu de la nourriture et de l'eau à volonté. Des données ont été recueillies sur les paramètres d'hématologie et de chimie sérique. T3 était significativement (P < 0,05) plus élevé que les autres sur les valeurs de PCV et RBC. Aucune différence significative (P> 0,05) enregistrée dans l'Hb et le WBC de T2 et T3. Pendant ce temps, T4 était significativement (P<0, 05) supérieur à T2 et T3 dans WBC et T2 était significativement ( P <0, 05) supérieur à celui de T3 et T4 dans MCH et MCHC. T2 et T3 étaient significativement (P<0,05) supérieurs à T4 dans les lymphocytes, tandis que T3 et T4 étaient significativement (P<0,05) supérieurs à T2 dans la quantité de monocytes. Pour la chimie du sérum, T3 était significativement (P < 0,05) supérieur à T2 et T4 en protéines totales et en albumine. Il y avait une différence significative (P<0,05) dans la teneur en cholestérol des oiseaux. Les valeurs d'hématologie et de chimie sérique enregistrées se situaient dans les plages standard pour un bon état de santé des poulets de chair. Les oiseaux nourris avec 5 % de farine de Bitterleaf ont obtenu de meilleurs résultats que les autres. Par conséquent, 5% de farine de Bitterleaf dans l'alimentation des poulets à griller produisant des oiseaux à haute immunité.

Abstract:

Une méthodologie d'étude du comportement en scénario de valorisation de déchets minéraux solidifiés/stabilisés est présentée. La méthodologie est basée sur des outils expérimentaux (des tests paramétriques et des essais de simulation du scénario) et des modèles de comportement. Le cas d'un bassin de stockage d'eau construit avec un matériau contenant des résidus d'épuration des fumées d'incinération d'ordures ménagères est présenté. L'influence de la carbonatation du lixiviat par le CO2 atmosphérique sur le relargage des éléments de constitution du matériau est étudiée. Un modèle de comportement est mis en place pour le cas étudié; il comporte trois niveaux : 1) le matériau (chimie et diffusion), 2) le lixiviat (chimie et convection), 3) l'absorption du CO2 dans le lixiviat. Plusieurs échelles d'expérimentation (tests de laboratoire, pilote de laboratoire, pilote de terrain) ont été mises en place pour l'étude du scénario et pour la validation du modèle de comportement. Le rôle de la modélisation est mis en avant par les résultats prévisionnels des simulations. Ainsi, pour le cas étudié, la carbonatation du système diminue la concentration du plomb dans l'eau du bassin par rapport à un scénario "bassin couvert". La carbonatation ne modifie pas le relargage des éléments solubles (Na, K, Cl) et détermine la spéciation du Ca dans le bassin et à la surface du matériau.

Abstract:

Anatase/brookite mixtured TiO2nanoparticles have been synthesized by using a two-step process through a chimie douce technique. The as-prepared powders were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and a nitrogen adsorption apparatus in multipoint Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method. The results indicated that the TiO2nanoparticles were composed of biphasial anatase/brookite mixtures, 38% anatase phase formed in quasi-spherical shape and 62% brookite phase formed in nanorod shape. The specific surface area, the average pore diameter, and the specific pore volume were 100.06 m2/g, 14.0 nm, and 0.561 cm3/g, respectively.

Abstract:

A study was conducted to determine the effect of Tetrapleura tetraptera pod pulp meal on haematology, red blood cell osmotic fragility and serum chemistry values of weaned boars. A total of 18 weaner boars of Large White x Duroc crossbreeds, aged 6 weeks and weighing 9.4kg on the average, were used for the study, which lasted 56 days. The piglets were divided into 3 equal groups, each of which were assigned 0.0%, 2.5% or 5.0% TPM per kg, respectively, of a basal weaner pig diet, in a completely randomized design. Data sets were collected on haematology, serum chemistry and lipid profile. Red blood cells (6.74, 6.03,12 5.57) x 10 /l, packed cell volume (46.33, 39.33, 37.35) %, haemoglobin concentration 9 (13.77, 11.43, 10.37) g/L and the platelet counts (37.90, 33.97, 33.83) x 10 /L were significantly lower (P<0.05) in the sera of boars fed TPM than in those fed zero TPM. Mean cell haemoglobin and mean cell haemoglobin concentration were significantly (P<0.05) lowered by addition of TPM in a dose-dependent fashion. Addition of TPM increased the fragility of the erythrocytes in sodium chloride solution of varying concentrations. Serum glucose increased progressively (P<0.05) with increase in TPM. Albumin was significantly reduced only at 5.0% TPM while globulin and urea were reduced (P<0.05) at both levels of TPM. Total protein and ALT were significantly reduced with increase in TPM. HDL was progressively lowered (P<0.05) with addition of TPM while the reverse was the case with LDL. VLDL and TG were significantly increased only at 5.0% TPM. It is concluded that TPM depressed the haematological indices, compromised the stability of the erythrocytes even in normal saline solution, reduced serum albumin, globulin, total protein, ALT and HDL but increased serum glucose, LDL, VLDLand TG. Cet étude a été menée pour déterminer l'effet de la farine de pulpe de gousse de aTetrapleuratetraptera sur l'hématologie, la fragilité osmotique des globules rouges et lesvaleurs de chimie sérique des verrats sevrés. Au total, 18 verrats sevrés issus de croisements Large White x Duroc, âgés de 6 semaines et pesant en moyenne 9,4 kg, ont été utilisés pour l'étude, qui a duré 56 jours. Les porcelets ont été divisés en 3 groupes égaux, chacun ayant reçu 0,0%, 2,5% ou 5,0% de TPM par kg, respectivement, d'un régime de base pour porcelet sevré, dans un plan complètement randomisé. Des ensembles de données ont été collectés sur l'hématologie, la chimie du sérum et le profil lipidique. Globules rouges (6,74, 6,03, 5,57) x 1012/l, hématocrite (46,33, 39,33, 37,35) %, concentration en hémoglobine (13,77, 11,43, 10,37) g/L et numération plaquettaire (37,90, 33,97, 33,83) x 109/L étaient significativement plus faibles (P<0,05) dans les sérums de verrats nourris au TPM que dans ceux nourris sans TPM. L'hémoglobine cellulaire moyenne et la concentration moyenne d'hémoglobine cellulaire ont été significativement (P < 0,05) abaissées par l'ajout de TPM d'une manière dose-dépendante. L'ajout de TPM a augmenté la fragilité des érythrocytes dans une solution de chlorure de sodium de concentrations variables. La glycémie a augmenté progressivement (P<0,05) avec l'augmentation de la TPM. L'albumine n'était significativement réduite qu'à 5,0 % de TPM tandis que la globuline et l'urée étaient réduites (P< 0,05) aux deux niveaux de TPM. La protéine totale et l'ALT ont été significativement réduites avec l'augmentation de la TPM. Le HDL a été progressivement abaissé (P<0,05) avec l'ajout de TPM alors que l'inverse était le cas avec le LDL. Les VLDL et les TG n'ont augmenté de manière significative qu'à 5,0 % de TPM. Il est conclu que le TPM a diminué les indices hématologiques, a compromis la stabilité des érythrocytes même dans une solution saline normale, a réduit l'albumine sérique, la globuline, les protéines totales, l'ALT et le HDL mais a augmenté le glucose sérique, le LDL, le VLDLet le TG

Abstract:

L’enseignement de l’électronique se heurte à un manque d’appétence de la part des étudiants. Ouvrir le champ technologique vers la fabrication additive et la plastronique est de nature à solliciter de nouveau l’intérêt des étu-diants. Malheureusement il est délicat de donner un premier exemple pertinent qui confirme l’intérêt et mette les diffé-rents cours en perspective, car la plastronique balaie des connaissances allant des matériaux, à la chimie, la plasturgie, la conception mécanique 3D, etc. L’article présente un mini-projet sur la réalisation d’un dispositif plastronique à l’aide de la fabrication additive et de la métallisation autocatalytique, comme premier contact des étudiants avec les aspects tech-nologiques. Il s’agit de fabriquer une maquette de camion imprimée en 3D, qui embarque sur sa surface non plane un circuit électronique typique. Tout d’abord le schéma électronique et la conception mécanique sont réalisés et assemblés. L’objet est ensuite imprimé et les pistes sont métallisées. La maquette du camion est obtenue après le brasage des com-posants. Cette maquette vise à provoquer un questionnement de la part de l’étudiant et lui permettre de mieux position-ner le contenu des cours et travaux pratiques d’une formation spécialisée en plastronique.

Abstract. In this paper, we present performance analyses for a concept geostationary observing system called MAGEAQ (Monitoring the Atmosphere from Geostationary orbit for European Air Quality). The MAGEAQ mission is designed to include a TIR spectrometer and a broadband VIS radiometer; in this work we study only the TIR component (MAGEAQ-TIR). We have produced about 20 days of MAGEAQ-TIR tropospheric ozone pseudo-observations with a full forward and inverse radiative transfer pseudo-observations simulator. We have studied the expected sensitivity of MAGEAQ-TIR and we have found that a completely independent surface −6 km ozone column (about 1.0 DOF (degrees of freedom) and maximum sensitivity at about 3.0 km, on average), as well as a partially independent surface −3 km ozone column (about 0.6 DOF and maximum sensitivity at about 2.5 km, on average) can be achieved. Then, we have compared the tropospheric ozone profiles and the lower (surface −6 km) and lowermost (surface −3 km) tropospheric ozone column pseudo-observations to the target pseudo-reality, produced with the MOCAGE (MOdèle de Chimie Atmosphérique à Grande Echelle) chemistry and transport model. We have found very small to not significant average biases (< 1% in absolute value, for the surface −6 km TOC, and about −2 to −3%, for the surface −3 km TOC) and small RMSEs (about 1.3 DU (5%), for the surface −6 km TOC, and about 1.5 DU (10%), for the surface −3 km TOC). We have tested the performances of MAGEAQ-TIR at some selected small (0.2° × 0.2°) urban and rural locations. We have found that, while the vertical structures of the lower tropospheric ozone pseudo-reality are sometimes missed, MAGEAQ-TIR lower and lowermost column pseudo-observations follow stunningly good the MOCAGE column pseudo-reality, with correlation coefficients reaching values of 0.9 or higher. Unprecedented retrieval performances for the lowermost tropospheric ozone column are shown. In any case, our MAGEAQ-TIR pseudo-observations are only partially able to replicate the MOCAGE pseudo-reality variability and temporal cycle at the very lowest layers (surface and 1 km altitude), especially at Southern European urban locations, where the photochemistry signal is partially missed or shifted at higher altitudes. Temporal artifact on the daily cycle are sometimes observed. Stratospheric-to-tropospheric exchanges during short time periods (of the order of 1 day) are detected by the MAGEAQ-TIR pseudo-observations.

Abstract:

Les traitements de surfaces (TS) utilisent des volumes importants d’eau et de produits chimiques dans leurs procédés de fabrication. Bien que des efforts considérables en matière d’amélioration des procédés aient été réalisés depuis 20 ans, la filière TS est encore considérée comme l’une des plus polluantes en matière de rejets. Le principal problème environnemental auquel est confrontée la filière est celui de la forte charge polluante des eaux issues de leurs procédés. Ces eaux usées sont complexes et difficiles à traiter car elles contiennent des polluants de nature et de concentration variables, et de plus susceptibles d’interactions. La législation étant de plus en plus exigeante dans de nombreux pays, les industriels tendent à réduire les impacts environnementaux. La technique de décontamination qui fait référence dans le secteur TS est la physico-chimie, qui consiste à insolubiliser les polluants par ajout de substances chimiques, et à séparer les deux phases eau-boue par un procédé physique. Dans ce contexte, nous avons analysé et optimisé pendant 24 mois le fonctionnement d’une station de traitement. Cet article présente les abattements chimiques obtenus suite aux différentes solutions d’optimisation validées en laboratoire puis transposées sur site industriel. L’optimisation de la station a permis de diminuer respectivement la charge organique, les nitrites et le zinc de 60 à 80 %, de 70 à 90 %, et de 70 à 95 %. Afin d’évaluer l’intérêt de chaque proposition d’optimisation, des tests écotoxicologiques normalisés de germination de graines de laitues ont été réalisés sur les effluents. La diminution des concentrations en polluants dans les eaux correspond à une diminution de l’impact du rejet sur la germination des graines. Des tests de croissance des plantes ont également confirmé le gain environnemental obtenu. Les tests biologiques proposés sont de bons indicateurs des concentrations en contaminants présents dans les eaux. Ces tests simples, peu onéreux et fiables peuvent être utilisés en routine pour évaluer les impacts d’un rejet.

Abstract:

Predicting the conditions in which a compound adopts a metastable structure when it crystallizes out of solution is an unsolved and fundamental problem in materials synthesis, and one which, if understood and harnessed, could enable the rational design of synthesis pathways toward or away from metastable structures. Crystallization of metastable phases is particularly accessible via low-temperature solution-based routes, such as chimie douce and hydrothermal synthesis, but although the chemistry of the solution plays a crucial role in governing which polymorph forms, how it does so is poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate an ab initio technique to quantify thermodynamic parameters of surfaces and bulks in equilibrium with an aqueous environment, enabling the calculation of nucleation barriers of competing polymorphs as a function of solution chemistry, thereby predicting the solution conditions governing polymorph selection. We apply this approach to resolve the long-standing “calcite–aragonite problem”––the observation that calcium carbonate precipitates as the metastable aragonite polymorph in marine environments, rather than the stable phase calcite––which is of tremendous relevance to biomineralization, carbon sequestration, paleogeochemistry, and the vulnerability of marine life to ocean acidification. We identify a direct relationship between the calcite surface energy and solution Mg–Ca ion concentrations, showing that the calcite nucleation barrier surpasses that of metastable aragonite in solutions with Mg:Ca ratios consistent with modern seawater, allowing aragonite to dominate the kinetics of nucleation. Our ability to quantify how solution parameters distinguish between polymorphs marks an important step toward the ab initio prediction of materials synthesis pathways in solution.

Abstract. Accurate and temporally resolved fields of free-troposphere ozone are of major importance to quantify the intercontinental transport of pollution and the ozone radiative forcing. In this study we examine the impact of assimilating ozone observations from the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) and the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) in a global chemical transport model (MOdèle de Chimie Atmosphérique à Grande Échelle, MOCAGE). The assimilation of the two instruments is performed by means of a variational algorithm (4-D-VAR) and allows to constrain stratospheric and tropospheric ozone simultaneously. The analysis is first computed for the months of August and November 2008 and validated against ozone-sondes measurements to verify the presence of observations and model biases. It is found that the IASI Tropospheric Ozone Column (TOC, 1000–225 hPa) should be bias-corrected prior to assimilation and MLS lowermost level (215 hPa) excluded from the analysis. Furthermore, a longer analysis of 6 months (July–August 2008) showed that the combined assimilation of MLS and IASI is able to globally reduce the uncertainty (Root Mean Square Error, RMSE) of the modeled ozone columns from 30% to 15% in the Upper-Troposphere/Lower-Stratosphere (UTLS, 70–225 hPa) and from 25% to 20% in the free troposphere. The positive effect of assimilating IASI tropospheric observations is very significant at low latitudes (30° S–30° N), whereas it is not demonstrated at higher latitudes. Results are confirmed by a comparison with additional ozone datasets like the Measurements of OZone and wAter vapour by aIrbus in-service airCraft (MOZAIC) data, the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) total ozone columns and several high-altitude surface measurements. Finally, the analysis is found to be little sensitive to the assimilation parameters and the model chemical scheme, due to the high frequency of satellite observations compared to the average life-time of free-troposphere/low-stratosphere ozone.

Abstract:

Fondée sur le concept de l'écocompatibilité des déchets et élaborée à l'issue d'un programme de recherche de 5 ans, la méthode présentée nécessite une étroite collaboration entre chercheurs ou experts provenant de disciplines variées (physico-chimie, hydrogéologie, géotechnique, biologie, microbiologie,...) et travaillant sur divers milieux (déchets, sol de surface, sous-sol et eau). Elle comprend une procédure d'évaluation stricto sensu, suivie d'une procédure de décision au cours de laquelle on se prononce sur l'écocompatibilité (ou non) des scénarios de stockage ou de valorisation des déchets étudiés (ex : valorisation en technique routière). L'évaluation est effectuée selon une approche dite " en scénario ", inspirée de la norme expérimentale européenne ENV 12 920 " Caractérisation des déchets - Méthodologie pour la détermination du comportement à la lixiviation d'un déchet dans des conditions spécifiées ". Elle repose sur l'étude successive des flux de polluants émis par le dépôt ou l'ouvrage contenant les déchets (terme source), du transport de ces flux vers les milieux récepteurs (terme transport) et de l'impact des flux de polluants atteignant les milieux récepteurs (terme impact). Elle comprend une étape préalable d'analyse visant à décrire finement chacun de ces trois termes fondamentaux (source, transport et impact), de manière à identifier et à hiérarchiser les différents paramètres ayant une influence déterminante sur leur comportement. Cette analyse, qui correspond à la description du déchet et du scénario de stockage ou de valorisation des déchets, permet ensuite d'effectuer une sélection pertinente des essais à mettre en œuvre pour procéder à l'évaluation de chacun des trois termes et donc de l'écocompatibilité du scénario étudié. Les grands principes de la méthode et les principaux résultats obtenus lors du programme relatif à sa mise au point ayant fait l'objet de précédentes publications, le présent document porte sur le caractère fondamentalement pluridisciplinaire de l'application de cette méthode.

Les membranes d’ultrafiltration se dégradent au cours de leurs années de fonctionnement, notamment à cause du colmatage et des nettoyages qu’elles subissent. Ce vieillissement provoque sur le long terme des problèmes d’exploitation sur les sites de traitement des eaux usées utilisant des bioréacteurs à membranes qui peuvent se traduire par des arrêts fréquents pour nettoyage et une diminution de la capacité filtrante pouvant aboutir à un remplacement des membranes. À ce jour, les mécanismes de vieillissement en bioréacteurs à membranes et leurs impacts sur les propriétés des membranes sont partiellement identifiés. L’objectif de ce travail est de proposer et valider une méthode de vieillissement accéléré de membranes fibres creuses à l’échelle d’un pilote semi-industriel (volume utile de 2 m³) dans des conditions représentatives de celles mises en œuvre sur les sites industriels (longueur des fibres, contraintes hydrodynamiques, séquençage de l’aération). Pour cela, un pilote de filtration membranaire a été exploité pendant deux ans dans des conditions similaires des cuves membranaires de la station de traitement des eaux de Seine Aval (Siaap, Yvelines, 6,5 millions d’eq-habitant). Afin d’accélérer le vieillissement, les membranes sont soumises à de plus fortes doses d’exposition au chlore : des nettoyages par trempage dans une solution de Javel à 1 000 ppm puis d’acide citrique à 2 000 ppm ont été réalisés tous les deux mois (vs un tous les six mois sur site). Afin de valider cette méthode de vieillissement, les résultats des caractérisations des fibres prélevées sur le pilote sont comparés à ceux retrouvés pour les fibres prélevées des bioréacteurs à membranes du Siaap. Les analyses des mesures de physico-chimie de surface, de perméabilité, de propriétés mécaniques et morphologiques ont permis de conclure à la pertinence de l’approche développée pour le suivi du vieillissement accéléré en conditions d’usage à l’échelle pilote, au regard des évolutions observées à l’échelle industrielle.

Abstract. Present and future satellite observations offer great potential for monitoring air quality on a daily and global basis. However, measurements from currently orbiting satellites do not allow a single sensor to accurately probe surface concentrations of gaseous pollutants such as tropospheric ozone. Combining information from IASI (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer) and GOME-2 (Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment-2) respectively in the TIR and UV spectra, a recent multispectral method (referred to as IASI+GOME-2) has shown enhanced sensitivity for probing ozone in the lowermost troposphere (LMT, below 3 km altitude) with maximum sensitivity down to 2.20 km a.s.l. over land, while sensitivity for IASI or GOME-2 alone only peaks at 3 to 4 km at the lowest.In this work we develop a pseudo-observation simulator and evaluate the potential of future EPS-SG (EUMETSAT Polar System – Second Generation) satellite observations, from new-generation sensors IASI-NG (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer – New Generation) and UVNS (Ultraviolet Visible Near-infrared Shortwave-infrared), to observe near-surface O3 through the IASI-NG+UVNS multispectral method. The pseudo-real state of the atmosphere is provided by the MOCAGE (MOdèle de Chimie Atmosphérique à Grande Échelle) chemical transport model. We perform full and accurate forward and inverse radiative transfer calculations for a period of 4 days (8–11 July 2010) over Europe.In the LMT, there is a remarkable agreement in the geographical distribution of O3 partial columns between IASI-NG+UVNS pseudo-observations and the corresponding MOCAGE pseudo-reality. With respect to synthetic IASI+GOME-2 products, IASI-NG+UVNS shows a higher correlation between pseudo-observations and pseudo-reality, which is enhanced by about 12 %. The bias on high ozone retrieval is reduced and the average accuracy increases by 22 %. The sensitivity to LMT ozone is also enhanced. On average, the degree of freedom for signal is higher by 159 % over land (from 0.29 to 0.75) and 214 % over ocean (from 0.21 to 0.66). The mean height of maximum sensitivity for the LMT peaks at 1.43 km over land and 2.02 km over ocean, respectively 1.03 and 1.30 km below that of IASI+GOME-2. IASI-NG+UVNS also shows good retrieval skill in the surface–2 km altitude range. It is one of a kind for retrieving ozone layers of 2–3 km thickness, in the first 2–3 km of the atmosphere. IASI-NG+UVNS is expected to largely enhance the capacity to observe ozone pollution from space.

Abstract:

A 4–m lidar digital elevation model (DEM) provides sufficient resolution to examine the impact of variable till cover on the incision history of multiple small (5 km2) catchments in eastern Canada. The study site was selected because it has homogeneous bedrock geology that dips parallel to the land surface, is tectonically stable, has undergone common base level changes, and has a common ice history, with variable overburden thickness, from thin cover in the west to thick cover in the east. Basin morphometrics were compared for similar-size basins that have variable till cover thicknesses. Basins with thicker till cover are wider and show differences in hypsometries compared to those where till cover is thin. Two basins representing end members of till thickness were measured for stream discharge and water chemistry. Thick till (> 1 m) on the eastern half of North Mountain retards infiltration sufficiently to promote overland flow and accelerate incision relative to areas with thinner till. Till thickness and continuity therefore are expected to impede the achievement of steadiness and may also delay stream power law relationships in larger catchments until till cover has been effectively eroded.SOMMAIREUn modèle altimétrique numérique (MAN) par lidar 4 m offre une résolution suffisante pour étudier l'impact des divers dépôts de till sur l'histoire de l'érosion linéaire de multiples petits (5 km2) bassins versants dans l'Est du Canada. Le site d'étude a été choisi parce que sa géologie est homogène et que son pendage est parallèle à la surface du sol, qu’il est tectoniquement stable, qu’il a subi des changements similaires du niveau de base d’érosion, de même qu’ une histoire glaciaire similaire, avec une épaisseur de mort-terrain variable, d’une couverture mince à l'ouest jusqu'à une couverture épaisse à l'est. La morphométrie du bassin a été comparée à celle de bassins de taille semblable aux épaisseurs de till variables. Les bassins aux couvertures de till plus épaisses sont plus larges et montrent des différences hypsométriques comparé à ceux aux couvertures minces. Deux bassins représentant les termes extrêmes de l'épaisseur du till ont été mesurées quant au débit du courant et à la chimie de l'eau. Les till épais (>1 m) sur la moitié est du mont Nord retardent l'infiltration, ce qui favorise l'écoulement en surface et accélèrent l’érosion linéaire par rapport aux zones couvertes de couches de till plus minces. On s’attend donc à ce que l'épaisseur de la couche de till et sa continuité agissent comme une entrave à la stabilité et puissent aussi retarder les effets de la loi de puissance de l’écoulement dans les grands bassins récepteurs jusqu'à ce que la couverture de till a été effectivement érodée.

Abstract. Well constrained volcanic emissions inventories in chemistry transport models are necessary to study the impacts induced by these sources on the tropospheric sulfur composition and on sulfur species concentrations and depositions at the surface. In this paper, the changes induced by the update of the volcanic sulfur emissions inventory are studied using the global chemistry transport model MOCAGE (MOdèle de Chimie Atmosphérique à Grande Échelle). Unlike the previous inventory (Andres and Kasgnoc, 1998), the updated one (Carn et al., 2016, 2017) uses more accurate information and includes contributions from both passive degassing and eruptive emissions. Eruptions are provided as daily total amounts of sulfur dioxide (SO2) emitted by volcanoes in the Carn et al. (2016, 2017) inventories, and degassing emissions are provided as annual averages with the related mean annual uncertainties of those emissions by volcano. Information on plume altitudes is also available and has been used in the model. We chose to analyze the year 2013, for which only a negligible amount of eruptive volcanic SO2 emissions is reported, allowing us to focus the study on the impact of passive degassing emissions on the tropospheric sulfur budget. An evaluation against the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) SO2 total column and MODIS (Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) aerosol optical depth (AOD) observations shows the improvements of the model results with the updated inventory. Because the global volcanic SO2 flux changes from 13 Tg yr−1 in Andres and Kasgnoc (1998) to 23.6 Tg yr−1 in Carn et al. (2016, 2017), significant differences appear in the global sulfur budget, mainly in the free troposphere and in the tropics. Even though volcanic SO2 emissions represent 15 % of the total annual sulfur emissions, the volcanic contribution to the tropospheric sulfate aerosol burden is 25 %, which is due to the higher altitude of emissions from volcanoes. Moreover, a sensitivity study on passive degassing emissions, using the annual uncertainties of emissions per volcano, also confirmed the nonlinear link between tropospheric sulfur species content with respect to volcanic SO2 emissions. This study highlights the need for accurate estimates of volcanic sources in chemistry transport models in order to properly simulate tropospheric sulfur species.

Abstract. This paper describes the capabilities of a nadir thermal infrared (TIR) sensor proposed for embarkation onboard a geostationary platform to monitor ozone (O3) and carbon monoxide (CO) for air quality (AQ) purposes. To assess the capabilities of this sensor we perform idealized retrieval studies considering typical atmospheric profiles of O3 and CO over Europe with different instrument configurations (signal to noise ratio and spectral sampling interval) using the KOPRA forward model and the KOPRA-fit retrieval scheme based on the Tikhonov-Phillips regularization. We then select a configuration, referred to as GEO-TIR, optimized for providing information in the lowermost troposphere (LmT; 0–3 km in height). For the GEO-TIR configuration we obtain around 1.5 degrees of freedom for O3 and 2 for CO at altitudes between 0 and 15 km. The error budget of GEO-TIR, calculated taking account of the principal contributions to the error (namely, temperature, measurement error, smoothing error) shows that information in the LmT can be achieved by GEO-TIR. We also retrieve analogous profiles from another geostationary infrared instrument with characteristics similar to the Meteosat Third Generation Infrared Sounder (MTG-IRS) which is dedicated to numerical weather prediction, referred to as GEO-TIR2. Comparison between GEO-TIR and GEO-TIR2 allows us to quantify the added value of GEO-TIR, a mission complementing the AQ observing system. To better characterize the information provided by GEO-TIR and GEO-TIR2 in the LmT, we retrieve two typical profiles of O3 and CO for different thermal contrast ranging from –10 K to 10 K. The shape of the first averaging kernel (corresponding to the surface level) confirms that GEO-TIR has good sensitivity to CO in the LmT and also to O3 for high positive thermal contrast. GEO-TIR2 has very low sensitivity in the LmT to O3 but can have sensitivity to CO with high positive thermal contrast. To quantify these results for a realistic atmosphere, we simulate it using the chemical transport model MOCAGE (MOdèle de Chimie Atmospherique à Grande Echelle) – this is the nature run. We simulate the O3 and CO spatial and temporal distributions from GEO-TIR observations in the LmT in July 2009 over Europe by sampling the nature run. Results show that GEO-TIR is able to capture well the spatial and temporal variability in the LmT for both O3 and CO, particularly during periods with high positive thermal contrast near the ground and high surface temperature, which results in active photochemistry and a raised planetary boundary layer. These results also provide evidence of the significant added value in the LmT of GEO-TIR compared to GEO-TIR2 by showing GEO-TIR is closer to the nature run than GEO-TIR2 for various statistical parameters (correlation, bias, standard deviation).

Abstract. This paper deals with recent improvements to the global chemical transport model of Météo-France MOCAGE (Modèle de Chimie Atmosphérique à Grande Echelle) that consists of updates to different aerosol parameterizations. MOCAGE only contains primary aerosol species: desert dust, sea salt, black carbon, organic carbon, and also volcanic ash in the case of large volcanic eruptions. We introduced important changes to the aerosol parameterization concerning emissions, wet deposition and sedimentation. For the emissions, size distribution and wind calculations are modified for desert dust aerosols, and a surface sea temperature dependant source function is introduced for sea salt aerosols. Wet deposition is modified toward a more physically realistic representation by introducing re-evaporation of falling rain and snowfall scavenging and by changing the in-cloud scavenging scheme along with calculations of precipitation cloud cover and rain properties. The sedimentation scheme update includes changes regarding the stability and viscosity calculations. Independent data from satellites (MODIS, SEVIRI), the ground (AERONET, EMEP), and a model inter-comparison project (AeroCom) are compared with MOCAGE simulations and show that the introduced changes brought a significant improvement on aerosol representation, properties and global distribution. Emitted quantities of desert dust and sea salt, as well their lifetimes, moved closer towards values of AeroCom estimates and the multi-model average. When comparing the model simulations with MODIS aerosol optical depth (AOD) observations over the oceans, the updated model configuration shows a decrease in the modified normalized mean bias (MNMB; from 0.42 to 0.10) and a better correlation (from 0.06 to 0.32) in terms of the geographical distribution and the temporal variability. The updates corrected a strong positive MNMB in the sea salt representation at high latitudes (from 0.65 to 0.16), and a negative MNMB in the desert dust representation in the African dust outflow region (from −1.01 to −0.22). The updates in sedimentation produced a modest difference; the MNMB with MODIS data from 0.10 in the updated configuration went to 0.11 in the updated configuration only without the sedimentation updates. Yet, the updates in the emissions and the wet deposition made a stronger impact on the results; the MNMB was 0.27 and 0.21 in updated configurations only without emission, and only without wet deposition updates, respectively. Also, the lifetime, the extent, and the strength of the episodic aerosol events are better reproduced in the updated configuration. The wet deposition processes and the differences between the various configurations that were tested greatly influence the representation of the episodic events. However, wet deposition is not a continuous process; it has a local and episodic signature and its representation depends strongly on the precipitation regime in the model.

Cet article représente une évaluation de l'état actuel et des tendances observées dans les écosystèmes lacustres, ainsi que de leur état futur probable lorsque les réductions d'émissions requises dans le cadre de l'Entente Canada-États-Unis sur la qualité de l'air auront été effectives. Outre une synthèse des faits saillants de ce dossier pour l'ensemble du Canada, le présent article s'appuie aussi sur l'ensemble des données physico-chimiques récentes (8874 échantillons) observées sur 2779 lacs de l'est canadien, ainsi que celles recueillies (1012 échantillons) sur 252 lacs de l'ouest canadien depuis 1985. Des données biologiques (poissons, benthos, zooplancton et oiseaux aquatiques) ont également été inventoriées pour identifier l'ampleur des dommages biologiques. Les nombreux lacs ayant subi une acidification anthropique récente sont situés pour la plupart dans l'est du Canada où les dépôts de SO- sont élevés. La sensibilité des sols influence également leur distribution spatiale. Durant la période s'échelonnant de 1981 à 1994, seulement 33% des 202 lacs faisant l'objet d'un suivi temporel dans l'est du Canada ont montré une amélioration significative de leur acidité (réduction) en réponse à la baisse des dépôts de SO- (11% des lacs ont subi une hausse d'acidité et 56% n'ont montré aucun changement). Plus de la moitié des lacs ayant récupéré se situent à proximité de Sudbury en Ontario. Plusieurs processus biogéochimiques sont responsables du retard dans la réversibilité de l'acidification. Pour cette raison, la récupération biologique a été très faible dans l'est canadien, exception faite de la région immédiate de Sudbury. Trois scénarios d'émissions ont été considérés: scénario 1: niveaux d'émission canadiens et américains de 1985; scénario 2: émissions canadiennes de 1994 et émissions américaines de 1990 ; scénario 3: réductions d'émissions américaines et canadiennes complétées. Ces scénarios de réductions d'émissions, qui ont été utilisés comme données d'entrée à des modèles stationnaires simulant la chimie des eaux de surface et qui ont été appliqués à cinq grandes zones lacustres du l'est canadien, suggèrent que la proportion de lacs "endommagés" (définis comme étant des lacs de pH<6) diminuera conséquemment aux réductions d'émissions américaines et canadiennes. De 11 à 49% des lacs acidifiés le resteront après l'ensemble des réductions prévues (scénario 3). Le Québec et l'Ontario, qui reçoivent actuellement les plus fortes retombées acides, bénéficieront le plus des réductions. Les gains environnementaux seront plus faibles dans l'est et dans l'ouest du Canada. De plus faibles dépôts acides et une contribution naturelle à l'acidité pourraient expliquer cette moins grande récupération. Il est maintenant reconnu que le pH est le principal facteur d'influence de la diversité spécifique du poisson, bien que d'autres facteurs comme la morphométrie du lac, l'altitude et les concentrations de COD soient aussi en partie responsables. Une réduction des dommages biologiques (i.e.baisse des disparitions de populations de poisson) serait donc possible, mais cette amélioration ne surviendra qu'après la hausse du pH des eaux de surface. L'importance relative des gains au plan biologique suivra une évolution similaire à celui des aspects chimiques. Des dommages significatifs aux écosystèmes lacustres subsisteront néanmoins après réalisation de l'ensemble des réductions d'émissions. Des pertes de populations de poissons devraient subsister dans 6% (Sudbury) à 15% (Kejimkujik) des lacs. Compte tenu du grand nombre de lacs situés dans le sud-est canadien, les pourcentages précédents impliquent que les ressources piscicoles perdues pourraient être très élevées. La restauration des communautés piscicoles devra passer dans bien des cas par un ré-enpoissonnement. De nouveaux programmes de contrôle visant des réductions supplémentaires d'émissions seront dès lors nécessaires pour protéger correctement les écosystèmes sensibles.

ABSTRACTWe report the synthesis by ‘chimie douce’ route of high surface area (200 m2/g) nano crystalline Nb2O5 (so called p-Nb2O5) and the importance of its addition to enhance the hydrogen sorption properties of MgH2. All of the prepared Nb2O5 catalysts induce faster kinetics, up to twice the desorption rate, than commonly used commercial Nb2O5. Among them, both p-Nb2O5 and Nb2O5:350 (p-Nb2O5 heated to 350 °C) exhibit the best catalytic activity, since a 5.2 wt% hydrogen desorption was achieved at 300 °C for (MgH2)p−Nb2O5, as compared to less than 4 wt.% for commercial Nb2O5 added MgH2, (MgH2)c−Nb2O5, within 12 min. Furthermore, due to the addition of high surface area Nb2O5, the desorption temperature was successfully lowered down to 200 °C, with a significant amount of desorbed hydrogen (4.5 wt%). In contrast at this “low” temperature, (MgH2)c−Nb2O5 shows no desorption.

AbstractIn both low temperature materials synthesis (sol gel processing, chimie douce) and low temperature geochemistry (weathering, geothermal and hydrothermal reactions, diagenesis) metastable and/or poorly crystalline materials are encountered. Despite the lack of equilibrium, energetic considerations play a major role in the formation and transformation of such phases. Recent calorimetric studies on heats of formation of zeolites and related metastable frameworks, on nanophase alpha and gamma alumina, and on manganese oxides and hydroxides are summarized. These studies illustrate the effects of framework topology, cation content, hydration and surface energy on the formation, persistence, and eventual transformation to more stable phase assemblages of these environmentally important materials.
