El artículo se refiere a la exigencia de universalización del nivel medio que pende sobre los distintos países de la región, reconstruye los discursos que fundamentan y legitiman estas demandas. El texto muestra la expansión del nivel, las modificaciones que las distintas reformas han introducido y marca las invariancias de un formato escolar que se mantiene desde su creación a fines del siglo XIX. Analiza las diferentes configuraciones nacionales de la educación media con referencia a tres países; Brasil, Argentina y Chile y marca la continuidad de las estrategias de inclusión con segregación y la funcionalidad de la expansión con las exigencias del mercado y del orden político.

Abstract:

Purpose. The aim of this work is to characterize the image of a lizard (kileski) in folklore and ritual practices of the Khakass people. Based on the goal, the following tasks were set: to analyze folklore and ethnographic information, to identify the key components of this mythological creature and to discover semantic links of the image with natural objects and elements. Chronologically, the framework covers late 19th – mid 20th Centuries. The choice of such time limits is due to the source base available on the research topic. Leading in the study is the principle of historicism, when any cultural phenomenon is considered in its development, taking into account specific situations. The research methodology is based on historical and ethnographic methods: remnants (relic) and semantic analysis. Results. Our analysis has led us to the following conclusions: in the Khakass culture, the lizard played an important role. It is explained by the lizard being plentiful in the nature of Khakassia, and specifically because of its zoological specificity. In the mythological perception of this reptile, it had contradictory dual characteristics and caused ambiguous feelings. People designated the reptile as a creature living in two environments – earth and water, which is steadily associated with the lower world. At the same time, the image is often introduced into mythological and fairy-tale schemes involving other chthonic species, such as frogs and snakes. In the folklore of the Khakass people, the whole life support system of demonic characters of the lower world, which included farming and nutrition, was directly tied to these amphibians. A great importance was attached to the image of the frog and shamanic practice. The lizard had a direct relation both to the spirit-owner of the water – Sug eezi, and to the lord of the underworld – Erlik Khan. The designated specificity of the lizard allowed including it into the set of key spirits, whi were shaman’s assistants. Shamans mediated between the world of the underground spirits and people: among shamanists, the worship of reptiles reached such a high level that the cult of the patron of sheep arose, the external data of which included the features of reptiles and amphibians. Conclusion. The image of the lizard carried out patronizing, protective and therapeutic functions in relation not only to pets, but also to people. The importance of the lizard to the culture of the Khakass people was so great that its image was included into the traditional Khakass calendar “muchel”. The latter was based on a twelve-year animal cycle. In the perception of the people, “kiles chili” – ‘the year of the lizard’ – was considered a good period.

Abstract:

The purpose of this article is to analyze the particular characteristics of the Spanish language in Uruguay, which is a variety of the Spanish language in Rio de la Plata (Argentina, Chili, Paraguay) and represents a special interest for the linguists, professors of Spanish language and foreign experts who go to work in Uruguay. We analyze the history of this particular language variety beginning from the epoch of the Spanish conquest, the influence of the local American languages (in particular of the Guarani Indians), as well as the Italian language and its dialects due to an important immigration from this country. We also pay attention to the phenomenon of the bilingualism, in other words the influence of the Portuguese language (the well-known “Portunol”) and the influence of the French language after the French immigration of the XIX century that led to gallicisms in Spanish language. All these facts provoked such linguistic characteristics as “an untypical use of some pronouns, a less rhythmical intonation and a very special vocabulary to compare with classical Spanish of Spain. The study is based on our own notes made during two trips to Uruguay, and on the “New Dictionary of Americanisms”, books of the history of Latin America and scientific works of the philologists who dedicated their studies to this subject.

Abstract:

In this paper, we propose to investigate one common adult representation of childhood that will serve both to reflect on and to problematize current and varied representations. As such, our object of study will always be a representation and not a substantialist definition. We propose to analyze the adult concept “child” from a critical perspective by reviewing it through a historical lens—that is, as it is expressed in the political and educational world of 19th century Chile, which, in turn, we can glimpse in the historical writings of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento. To carry out this journey, we propose three guiding thematic axes: 1) how all school apparatuses embody, configure and assume a certain identifiable representation of “child’ and childhood; 2) an analysis of the characteristics and objectives of the 19th century Chilean school apparatus, particularly in its function as a government device, or dispositif; 3) just how that dispositif becomes visible to inquiry in the historical record, particularly in what it can reveal to us about the image or images of childhood held by adults. To be understood by adults as a boy or a girl in Chile during that period is communicated in the historical record through a myriad of diverse sources, each requiring consideration in its context. Magazines, syllabaries, school textbooks and children's stories configure different perspectives on and attitudes toward childhood, which in turn are associated with the social origin of these documents and the purposes they embody. The images, ideas and signs of interaction that appear in these school documents act cumulatively to reveal a cultural image of “child” and aid us in understanding the political and socio-cultural significance attributed to that period in the human life-cycle. And while we cannot claim to have identified how all adults of 19th century Chile understood and represented childhood, such documents do offer insights into the beliefs and assumptions of the political and ruling classes

Abstract:

Russian Empire in the second half of the XIX–early XX centuries gradually entered the era of modernization of political, economic and social institutions. The disintegration of the patriarchal family entailed a massive exodus of women to cities, which in turn turned out to be on the quantitative indicators of illegitimate births. Lack of funds for food, prompted mothers to leave the child to the mercy of fate. Statistical data is stating that the foundlings grew from year to year. By the end of the XIX century each issue of the periodical press, published in the territory of the Tauride province, contained several reports about foundlings. All children were sent to an orphanage. A wet nurse was assigned to the child, who was supposed to replace his mother. The direction of the research is to describe the patronage system in the Tauride province of the late XIX–early XX centuries

Abstract:

In the 1880s in Russia the paradigms of socioeconomic and cultural development began to change, and changes occurred in the sphere of production. The quantitative increase in the number of workers was accompanied by qualitative changes in their composition. In the last quarter of the 19th century, largely thanks to the development of machine production, the active involvement of young people of different age groups in industry increased. The share of children’s participation in various industries was uneven. Thus, the specifics of the mining industry did not allow the widespread use of the labor of children and adolescents directly in the extraction of minerals. The situation with the involvement of child and teenage labor in the factory and handicraft industries was somewhat different. The most common were pimy-making, pottery, stone-cutting, shoemaking, cooperage, etc. The peculiarity of these industries was primarily their family nature, as a result of which there was an even earlier and wider involvement of children and adolescents in labor than in other industries of the Urals. The length of the working day is a special issue in the study of working conditions for young people. Minors began to work on an equal basis with adults, i.e. 9 hours a day. The average working day varied depending on the type of production and the number of work shifts per day. In most large and small mines in Russia, where child labor was often used illegally, the working day reached 12 hours a day. In the carriage and blacksmith trades, the working day of a minor lasted more than 11 hours, and for young lapidaries, tanners and leather workers it ranged from 13 to 18 hours a day. The wages of the working youth of the country and the Urals also fluctuated depending on the nature of the work performed. Various types of deductions, which were not always legal, had a significant impact on the earnings of working youth. In some cases they amounted to more than a half of what they earned. A negative role in this phenomenon was played by foremen and overseers, who were the closest superiors for young workers, capable of execution and mercy. Taking advantage of their position, they often cheated workers and extorted food and money. This situation led to the fact that the state was forced to take measures to limit the cruel exploitation of children and adolescents in industry. This is proven by the adoption of a number of legislative acts (1882, 1884, and 1885). At the same time, the work of minors saved them from a half-starved existence; the child had the role of the family breadwinner. How urgent the need was to get the child to work early was determined by the ratio of working and non-working children in the family. But the insecurity of working families meant that even small earnings of children and adolescents significantly improved the financial situation of all its members.

Resumen:El siguiente artículo propone analizar la estrecha relación existente entre utopía y paisaje dentro del imaginario nacional de Chile durante el siglo XIX. Contrastando ciertas obras pictóricas del período con la versión oficial del Himno patrio, se intentará evidenciar cómo estas representaciones, insertas en un programa ideológico republicano y liberal, responden a una estrategia simbólica consistente en la refundación del territorio so- berano; operación política que quiso desdibujar la diversidad geográfica para consolidar al Valle Central como el paisaje chileno por antonomasia. De este modo, dilucidaremos la utopía del paisaje, materializada en un conjunto de signos, como el correlato de una utopía de progreso liberal, republicano y nacionalista.Palabras claves: paisaje - utopía - liberal - republicano - Chile siglo XIXAbstract:The following article proposes to analyze the close relationship between utopia and landscape within the national imaginary of Chile during the 19th century. ResumenEste estudio analiza la trayectoria de la familia empresaria Matte, la que ha sido una de las pocas, junto con los Edwards y los Cousiño, que han tenido la capacidad de permanecer en el largo plazo, cuatro generaciones, desde mediados del siglo XIX hasta la actualidad, como una de las más importantes de la elite empresarial chilena, resolviendo exitosamente las sucesiones de una generación a otra, donde diferentes ramas de la familia han asumido el liderazgo empresarial. Específicamente en este estudio analizamos el proceso de sucesión desarrollado en la familia Matte Pérez, entre 1879 y 1894, la que les permitió consolidarse como una familia empresaria, tras este exitoso proceso de sucesión empresarial a fines del siglo XIX.

Abstract:

El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo realizar un primer análisis, desde el enfoque de la cultura material, al barómetro que Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna identificó como el único que existía en Santiago de Chile a principios del siglo XIX. Tras una revisión de los primeros medios de comunicación publicados en el país, como La Aurora de Chile o El Mercurio Chileno, además de artículos científicos y documentación del siglo XIX, se elaboró una breve biografía de este instrumento y se propone que propició la circulación del conocimiento meteorológico a nivel transnacional. Se sugiere también que pudo cumplir distintos roles en su interacción con la sociedad de la época, siendo un vínculo entre las ciencias atmosféricas y las personas, y un articulador de relaciones sociales.

The purpose of the article is to consistently analyse the statements of contemporaries about the reform of church choirs in the Russian church and secular periodicals of the early 20th century, which have not been previously involved in musicological studies. At the beginning of the 20th century, the question of the role of women in society was considered in various publications, including periodicals on art. They discussed the position of women in musical professions and keenly debated the topic of women being involved in liturgical singing in the choir. Adherents of patriarchal views defended the inadmissibility of female singers in church, whereas innovators advocated their participation. The reform of church choirs in Russia was carried out gradually, under the influence of transformations in the structure of church life, the growth of social freedoms, and the spread of humanistic ideas in society related to the condemnation of child labour. Public discussion in the music and church press began in 1906. The topic of the church choir reform was raised at the All-Russian Congress of Church Singing Leaders in Moscow in 1908–1909, but the issue of women’s participation in liturgical singing in the choir was finally resolved only at the Local Council of the Russian Orthodox Church in 1918.

Al respecto, se desarrollan tres temáticas: 1) los viajeros que describieron el Chile rural en el siglo XIX, 2) los pioneros de la antropología y del folklore que trabajaron en contextos y temas rurales y 3) el experimento etnográfico de Tancredo Pinochet Le Brun en la hacienda del presidente de la república. The article addresses a number of issues related to the profession of wet nurses in pre-Revolutionary Russia. This topic is particularly relevant in connection with the current discussion of the alienation of women’s reproductive function. According to infant care manuals, while choosing a wet nurse, doctors recommended that mothers consider not only physical aspects, but also ethical issues. However, in practice, the ethics receded into the background. Wet nurses were used in almost all families that had reached a certain financial and social status. Doctors’ recommendations were referred to justify the fact that mothers should not feed their own infants. Therefore, such recommendations served to justify an ethically questionable practice. The most serious medical problem was that wet nurses were distributors of syphilis. Many nurses started their work in orphanages where they contracted syphilis from infected foundling babies. As it was impossible to diagnose syphilis at the early stages, the infected wet nurse would become the carrier of the disease and, when hired by a family, infect the customer’s child. The article is based on the materials in the Odessa province.

Durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX la creación y la práctica musical de repertorio de salón en contextos privados fue una actividad considerada como apropiada para la expresión artística de las mujeres burguesas de la época. En tanto prácticas, dialogaron con la literatura y la poesía y formaron parte del mismo modelo de educación ilustrado y moderno, y encontraron su lugar de expresión en el espacio semipúblico del salón. El presente artículo busca poner en duda que Delfina Pérez fue el seudónimo artístico de Delfina de la Cruz, una mujer música chilena que vivió a mediados del siglo XIX. Mediante una revisión crítica de la prensa de la época, de las partituras conservadas en distintos archivos más el análisis de la historiografía musical que la menciona es que este artículo busca entregar las pruebas suficientes que permitan afirmar que a mediados del siglo XIX existieron en Chile dos mujeres llamadas Delfina que interpretaron y compusieron música bajo los cánones de la época. De manera específica, se busca visibilizar a Delfina Pérez como una mujer música y compositora profesionalmente activa durante casi toda la segunda mitad del siglo XIX.

El ingreso de diversos cultos protestantes a Chile desde mediados del siglo XIX tensionó el orden religioso establecido dando un impulso y transformando las esferas de discusión acerca del lugar que debía tener la religión en la construcción del Estado chileno. En este contexto de tensiones político religiosas que se vincularon al proceso de secularización de la sociedad chilena, ingresó a fines del siglo XIX la Misión The Christian and Missionary Alliance, una organización estadounidense que buscaba instalarse en el territorio del sur chileno en búsqueda de nuevos prosélitos. Este artículo da cuenta del proceso de establecimiento de la Misión The Christian and Missionary Alliance, en la persona de uno de sus fundadores, Albert E. Dawson, un ministro religioso metodista canadiense que arribó a Chile durante 1897 e hizo una cruzada apostólica hasta el año 1914; la instalación de esta Misión en Chile se vinculó en buena parte a las actividades de este misionero el cual ha sido silenciado tanto de la historiografía chilena como de la memoria del evangelicalismo chileno.

En Las Américas en el Siglo XIX igualmente se presentan manifestaciones noveles de actividades turísticas. Objetivo: El objeto de esta investigación es indagar sobre el surgimiento de un turismo temprano en los países que integran el continente americano durante el Siglo XIX, identificando cuáles países y actividades turísticas fueron desarrolladas durante ese periodo histórico. Metodología: El trabajo se realizó a partir del análisis bibliográfico de diferentes materiales asociados a esta actividad, así como del método de análisis-síntesis para el arribo a conclusiones. Resultados: La investigación encontró que en Estados Unidos, México, Perú y Cuba en la primera parte de este Siglo y en Canadá, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay en la segunda parte del XIX, se producen manifestaciones de este turismo incipiente o temprano. Conclusión: No se encontraron evidencias de manifestaciones de algún tipo de turismo en otros países de América en el Siglo XIX. Así, como ocurrió en Europa, se puede afirmar que en el Siglo XIX comienza también en Las Américas directamente la historia del turismo. A real interest in the child was shown in the time of Romanticism. Withinthe Macedonian cultural development there is an interest shown in children during the Enlightenment, at the beginning of the XIX century.Thefirst books published in the vernacular were intended for adults, but at the same time provided directionsfor better upbringing of children. Durante las últimas décadas del siglo XIX, los descubrimientos en la zona austral del planeta demostraron la existencia de un sexto continente, la Antártida, por el cual los países más cercanos se disputaron su soberanía. A inicios del siglo XX, Chile y Argentina se encontraban frente a frente en este dilema, ya que ambos se disputaban las nuevas tierras descubiertas, aumentando su proyección geopolítica al sur. El presente artículo analizará esta disputa entre 1890 hasta 1910, cuando aquellos Estados establecieron sus reclamaciones formales mediante una metodología cualitativa basada en revisión de fuentes producidas en un espacio tiempo acotado, entre fines del siglo XIX e inicios del siglo XX.

Resumen El artículo analiza el rol que jugó el Observatorio Astronómico Nacional en la expansión territorial de Chile a fines del siglo XIX, a través de la relación que sostuvo con tres exploraciones geográficas asociadas a este proceso. Se propone que el Observatorio cumplió un papel central para estas exploraciones geográficas, ayudando a obtener coordenadas geográficas precisas en pos de producir mapas exactos de los territorios anexados al norte y sur de Chile. Los resultados permiten afirmar que el Observatorio Astronómico Nacional fue una institución que prestó servicios estratégicos durante la expansión territorial y, a su vez, que la geografía fue parte importante de sus trabajos científicos institucionales.

Abstract:

The protection of motherhood and childhood occupied a significant place in the zemstvo medical practice of the late XIX — early XX c. It was “zemsky” doctors who were first to investigate the risk factors for maternal and child health in a Russian village. These included, first of all, the imperfect system of obstetrics, the incorrect feeding of infants, and the prevalence of acute childhood infections. For the protection of the health of the mother and child, work has been directed to organize skilled obstetric care, establish nursery-shelters, prevent acute childhood infections, support breastfeeding, and prevent orphanhood. At the same time, a number of zemstvo medico-social programs (organization of obstetric centers, nurseryshelters) were ineffective. The reasons for these failures were cultural traditions, peculiarities of the economic system, and the poverty of the Russian peasantry. More significant success was achieved in the prevention of acute childhood infections, medical care for pupils of rural schools and orphans. With the help of serum therapy, zemstvo doctors were able to reduce mortality from diphtheria. In addition, a vaccine against scarlet fever was being tested in Saratov region. The establishment of permanent medical supervision of children in Saratov orphanage resulted in 20—30 % mortality reduction. Many initiatives of zemstvo doctors: support of breastfeeding, prevention of orphanhood, mass immunization are being used in modern maternity and childhood protection systems.

La familia Choribit está estrechamente vinculada a la historia del curtido en el municipio de Hasparren, en el País Vasco francés. Se puede hablar de una verdadera dinastía, ya que ejercieron esta actividad en el pueblo en los siglos XVIII y XIX; luego, cuando llegó la crisis a finales del siglo XIX, los Choribit optaron por emigrar a Chile, donde prosperaron en su oficio durante todo el siglo XX. El éxito de este proyecto de emigración les proporcionó una riqueza financiera que les permitió vivir entre Europa y América, invirtiendo en su tierra natal y realizando frecuentes viajes a sus hogares.

El documento integra expedientes por acusaciones criminales contra jueces legos, analizados a la luz del papel de la justicia en el mantenimiento de los equilibrios sociales en Hispanoamérica. Objetivo: del amplio universo de la literatura socialista, el Manifiesto comunista de Marx y Engels ha sido por lejos el folleto más afortunado. Publicado por primera vez en 1848, a fines del siglo XIX se había convertido en el texto liminar del socialismo moderno. Traducido a más de setenta lenguas, logró sortear censuras, prohibiciones y persecuciones, imprimiéndose en todos los rincones del globo, en forma legal o clandestina. Este estudio sigue los avatares de sus ediciones chilenas. Metodología: enmarcado en una perspectiva continental de recepción y difusión del Manifiesto comunista en América Latina, el trabajo reconstruye estas ediciones a partir de la folletería y las revistas de la época, así como de diversas memorias y testimonios. Originalidad: el artículo traza una cartografía de la recepción y difusión de la cultura marxista en Chile, una problemática que aparece referida diagonalmente en la bibliografía, pero cuya complejidad estaba pendiente de reconstruir. Conclusiones: se concluye que el carácter tardío de las primeras impresiones en Chile deriva de las singulares condiciones en que se desenvolvió la cultura obrera del país a finales del siglo XIX y comienzos del XX. Desde una perspectiva comparatista a escala continental, destaca la relevancia de la edición clandestina del Centenario preparada por Babel así como la edición masiva de Quimantú, publicada en los años de la Unidad Popular.

En La Frontera, también llamada Araucanía, territorio habitado por el pueblo mapuche que dividía el país en dos -sobre el que ni el dominio español (siglos XVI al XVIII) ni el estado republicano de Chile (s. XIX) habían conseguido establecer dominio-, se desarrollaron diversas estrategias para su ocupación, revelando maniobras para imponer, extender y consolidar procesos modernizadores del Estado chileno. Desde los discursos presidenciales de José Joaquín Pérez hasta los de José Manuel Balmaceda a fines del siglo XIX, se examina el papel del poder ejecutivo por materializar la presencia del Estado en la zona a través de grandes infraestructuras ferroviarias, como agentes dinamizadores de las nacientes ciudades y villas, y de las economías impulsadas por la colonización. Se verifica la construcción del viaducto del Malleco como hito territorial que extiende las comunicaciones y el transporte hacia el sur de Chile, cuyo lenguaje industrial confronta ecosistema y artilugio en un escenario ancestral.

El artículo aborda la celebración de la Nochebuena en Santiago de Chile, durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. El espíritu carnavalesco que caracterizó a esta fiesta desde tiempos de la Colonia, cedió paulatinamente frente al cambio de mentalidad que sufrieron las elites santiaguinas a medida que avanzaba el siglo XIX. El análisis de la prensa de la época deja en evidencia que los nuevos ideales ilustrados tenían poco que ver con la expresividad barroca que se manifestaba durante la Navidad, lo que se tradujo en una serie de disposiciones gubernamentales que terminaron por transformar la sociabilidad festiva de los chilenos con respecto a la Nochebuena.

Abstract:

El artículo que presentamos se refiere a las relaciones escultóricas entre Italia y Chile durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX y los comienzos del XX. En este espacio concreto, analizaremos los conceptos de influjo y trasferencia, ambos fenómenos que operaron en los intercambios artísticos entre los dos países; consideraremos los exhortos del primer director de la Academia de Pintura chilena, el napolitano Alessandro Ciccarelli; examinaremos aquellas esculturas que en el espacio público chileno se vinculan directamente con Italia; investigaremos las dos experiencias del Museo de Copias y de la Exposición del Centenario para recopilar en ellas pruebas de los envíos de obras de Italia a Chile; finalmente trataremos sobre Nicanor Plaza y Rebeca Mate, dos artistas que desarrollaron buena parte de su carrera escultórica en el Belpaese. La metodología aplicada para ello ha sido de tipo cualitativa, tomado en consideración el diálogo entre las fuentes primarias (cartas, reglamentos, prensa artística, documentos consulares y académicos) recopiladas principalmente entre Santiago de Chile y Florencia, las obras escultóricas presentes en territorio chileno que enlazan con Italia, y el contexto histórico y artístico en el que fueron creadas.

Durante o século XIX e no decorrer das primeiras décadas do século XX, foram implantados projetos e colonização alemã no Brasil, no Chile e na Argentina. Assumiram semelhanças muito grandes nos três países, tanto nos objetivos quanto no modelo da estrutura fundiária com na organização das comunidades rurais.
