Full textThis research arises from the interest in the current state of politics in post-bicentennial Chile. From a political anthropology, in convergence with the sociology of social movements, the question of the dramaturgy of the political in 21st century Chile is directed towards the study of the staging, on and offline, of a Socio-environmental Movement in the region of Atacama del Norte Chico, in which environmental actors, territorial assemblies, feminist collectives, NGOs and indigenous communities converge. Through a qualitative methodology, with a phase of classical ethnography and virtual ethnography, and a socio-historical phase with a technofeminism lecture of authority and communication (S.XVI-XX), this study brings light to the relations between today’s political figures and the political forms of the colonial past in the territory. In the context of Diaguita ethnic reemergence, the politicization of local actors in a socio-environmental movement manages to update political forms of an Indian past in the staging and images of the political figures of water, the assembly, the indigenous authority, the feminines leaders and the yanacona social scientists

Full textThis thesis deals with French Officers who contributed to the Chilean Independence on the battlefields and training grounds, becoming the instructors “par excellence” of the patriots. It looks at this adventure in the context of the Napoleonic policy towards Spanish America and specially of the Napoleonic legend and its ideals, considering that these soldiers believed to be carrying out a mission in the Americas. With varied levels of competence, they were confronted to competition from their Chilean and Argentinean comrades. This thesis identifies three periods: the genesis of this French saga in Chile; “the political project” depicting the identification of some of them with José Miguel Carrera, and the efforts of the general Brayer and others to exert influence over San Martin and O'Higgins; and the patient work of soldiers like Beauchef, Viel and Rondizzoni, throughout the 1820's, to build a Chilean National Army capable of protecting Chilean unity and the role of some of them in the civil war of 1829

Full textIn this research work we have tried to explain the social, political, economical and cultural (when necessary) developme nt of a society which was developing and spent its first forty years under governments whose presidents belonged to the army; the power fell into the hands of the political class composed of civilians only after the creation of the great tr ends of political thought. At the begining of our work the change of the creoles into a leading political class is emphasized. This resulted in the independence of chile. We have studied the causes and the consequences of the independence of the country as well as its republican characteris tics. Then we dealt with the period of the spanish reconquest and influences of the french ideas on the text of the 1818 constitution. We have studied the political development as far the triumph of the conservatives and the setting up of the system of th e "portaliano" government. We have also studied the development of education and the exploitation of the silver and copper mines. We also looked into the government of bulnes at which time new political areas arose. There also was a significant increase in the production of metals which helped to create a liberal middle class

Full textThe Centenary of Chile's Independence (1910) is a major national commemoration of the state. The event was celebrated by the political choice of the ruling elite, who expressed their pride, considering that they considered themselves the legitimate heirs of the founding fathers of the nation. We will analyze the symbolic content of the national holiday and try to understand it as a result of the process of building national identity, initiated by the state after 1810. At the same time, we will delve deeper into the characteristics of the social and political context of the period. Which are exposed as a mirror of their time through the commemoration of the Centennial. At the social level, recent sources and historiography confirm the existence of a class society marked by its contrasts since the end of the nineteenth century. The dominant political elite responsible for the organization made it an ostentatious official celebration, which the greater part of the population thought to be pompous, which on the other hand celebrated it rather in a popular and simple way. However, and despite these big differences, national sentiment is shared across the country. At the political level, this commemoration provokes a production of highly nationalistic and eloquent political speeches, which will affirm a rather idyllic, positive and patriotic vision of the country, which contrasts with another type of discourse, nationalists too, but deeply critical of the situation. That Chile lives. A controversy of legitimacy settles around the commemoration of the Centennial, against the Institution and its political class. So we think that the commemoration of the centenary is lived on the one hand as an opportunity to make-memory and affirmation of the national identity of the Republic, and on the other hand as an opportunity to recompose the social unity, then very fragmented, and perhaps as an opportunity to reflect on the crisis of legitimacy that the Chilean parliamentary regime is experiencing, but that does not seem to want to assume the political elite
