Abstract:
This research presents a synchronic and a diachronic investigation of six Italian translations of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (Alice) across a century (1872-1988). This work draws on Antoine Berman's method for the analysis of literary translations and integrates it with interdisciplinary theoretical approaches focused on the investigation of children's literature in translation. The premises of children's literature studies, translation studies, and retranslation studies underpin the analytical framework that supports the textual analysis. The examination focuses in particular on the translation strategies used to convey in Italian the culture-specific references that contribute to fashion the identity of Alice and her Wonderland. The research operates on two different levels. Firstly, it presents a synchronic investigation concerned with a close reading and analysis of each translation in linguistic and textual terms. The elements examined in the detailed survey offer the opportunity to retrace the translators' unique understanding of Alice and discuss how it was conveyed to the Italian readers. Secondly, it proposes a diachronic investigation comparing, from a chronological perspective, the translation solutions previously identified and examines how the concepts of the image of the child and dual readership have evolved in the Italian translations. The purpose of the study is to investigate the translation strategies to convey Alice in Italian, observe the patterns that emerge from the analysis of the texts and advance explanatory hypotheses that would account for the changes in the translators' understanding of Carroll's novel over time. The close reading the research centres on aims to provide a meticulous collection of the translation solutions found in the texts; these are not confined to particular passages of the book but are found throughout it, thus offering support for future analysis on the translations of Alice. Finally, this research also aims to contribute to the analysis of children's literature in translation by providing an analytical framework able to support the investigation of different aspects of books for children in translation in other languages other than Italian.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The classic Victorian tale by Lewis Carroll, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865), has been enjoyed by adults and children alike in many countries and in many languages. In this book, Carroll parodies the accepted style of children’s books of the Victorian Age by mocking the moralistic and realistic expectations. All the poems in the book are parodies of once familiar nursery rhymes, which often conveyed a moral lesson. Translating Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is a challenging task, as it poses culturespecific, text-specific and language-specific problems. Although the book has been translated into more than 70 languages, it seems to be more popular in some cultures than in others. At the same time, some cultures seem to be content with “older” translations, while others need “updated” versions. Cultural differences seem to play a role in these preferences. The aim of this study is to examine the French and Afrikaans translations of a parodied poem (as found in chapter 2 of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland) from an intercultural perspective. In both cases, the translators seem to have found equivalents in their respective cultures that would be acceptable to their target readers.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die klassieke Victoriaanse verhaal deur Lewis Carroll, Alice se Avonture in Wonderland (1865), het plesier verskaf aan volwassenes en kinders in baie lande en in baie tale. In hierdie boek parodieer Carroll die aanvaarbare styl van kinderboeke van die Victoriaanse tydperk deur die spot te dryf met die moralistiese en realistiese verwagtinge. Al die gedigte in die boek is parodieë van eens bekende rympies, wat dikwels ‘n morele les bevat het. Die vertaling van Alice se Avonture in Wonderland is ‘n uitdagende taak, aangesien dit bepaalde kultuur-, teks- en taalverwante probleme inhou. Hoewel die boek in meer as 70 tale vertaal is, blyk dit meer gewild te wees in sekere kulture as in ander. Terselfdertyd is sommige kulture skynbaar tevrede met “ouer” vertalings, terwyl ander meer “hersiene” weergawes verkies. Kultuurverskille speel oënskynlik ‘n rol in hierdie voorkeure. Abstract:
Zuppa di Arcobaleno is a short story wrote by Spanish-Italian author Raquel Olcoz Moreno about a little girl who faces a common struggle shared by many children all over the world: she doesn’t like vegetables. However, her stubbornness is challenged when she starts shrinking in size and turning grey because of the lack of vitamins in her diet. The story has a strong moral lesson that can be foreseen from the start and becomes more evident as the reader goes deeper into the story, through colorful visual prompts and fantastic narration. Visual imagery is a strong tool in this book, every scene carries a detailed description of shapes and colors, necessary to stimulate the child’s imagination, which will be eventually be paired up with actual illustrations as support. This paper will analyze both the aspects of children’s literature as a literary genre and children’s literature in translation by including the analysis of the translation of the aforementioned children’s book. In the first chapter, the book chosen to be translated will be introduced and children’s literature will be analyzed from a more theoretical point of view, elaborating on the definition of children’s literature, its origins, and translating literature for children. This chapter will also elaborate further on illustrated children’s books and the importance of illustrations in children’s literature. Secondly, the translation process followed while translating the text will be analyzed, giving relevant examples and applying the theoretical concepts to the case study. The translation strategy includes a series of critical points and translation choices: they will be explained in detail and the choices in relation to the translation strategy will be explained.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigates the mechanics behind the translation of children’s literature through a practical translation from Dutch into English and an introspective commentary thereof. It also examines the cultural disparity and Anglo-American dominance within (translated) children’s literature. Through this translation and study, this thesis would like to contribute to the one-sided literary traffic and point out the cultural consequences this imbalance in trade will hold. Not only for a world library of children’s literature, but also for English speaking children who are increasingly oblivious of foreign literature. This thesis especially addresses the British reluctance towards translated foreign children’s literature due to the strong position of English as a language and the quality of the British national children’s literature. Furthermore, it challenges translation studies to consider the different needs and strategies for the translation of children’s literature. The approach this translator proposed for the translation of De zusjes Kriegel was a functional dialogic approach. This thesis therefore touches upon the developments that have led to the rise and wide applicability of functionalism in the practice of translation. Some of the most salient theorists in translation of children’s literature will also be discussed, specifically focusing on Riitta Oittinen’s ideas on Bakhtinian dialogue and carnivalism in relation to the translation of children’s literature. A functional dialogic approach to the practical translation of De zusjes Kriegel has led to an overall naturalised and domesticated translation in which the source text was adapted to a British target text cultural setting. This strategy was chosen to guarantee positive reception of the translation in the target text culture. A small-scale empirical reception survey has asserted this positive reception and reinforced some of this thesis’ presuppositions, among others that English-speaking children have no access to and no knowledge of foreign literature. Through the success of the practical translation and the positive reception of the target text this study has emphasised the importance and cultural necessity of translating foreign children’s literature into English.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In hierdie studie word ondersoek ingestel na die meganismes vir die vertaling van kinderliteratuur, deur middel van ’n praktiese vertaling uit Nederlands in Engels en introspektiewe kommentaar daarop. Die kulturele wanverhoudinge asook Anglo-Amerikaanse dominansie binne (vertaalde) kinderliteratuur word ook ondersoek. Deur middel van hierdie vertaling en studie poog hierdie tesis om by te dra tot die eensydige literêre verkeer van vertaalde werke uit Engels en benadruk die kulturele gevolge wat hierdie wanbalans sal inhou. Dit is nie slegs vir ’n wêreldbiblioteek van kinderliteratuur nie, maar ook vir Engelssprekende kinders, wat toenemend meer onbewus raak van vertaalde letterkunde. In hierdie tesis word die Britse teensinnigheid vir vertaalde vreemde kinderliteratuur, as gevolg van die sterk posisie van die Engelse taal en die hoë gehalte van Britse nasionale kinderliteratuur, in die besonder, bespreek. Verder word die vertaalwetenskap uitgedaag om die behoefte aan en strategieë vir die vertaling van kinderliteratuur in aanmerking te neem. Hierdie vertaler het besluit om ’n funksionalisties dialogiese benadering tot die vertaling van De zusjes Kriegel te volg. Daarom word die ontwikkelings wat gelei het tot die ontstaan en wye toepassing van die funksionalisme in die vertaalpraktyk, bespreek. Verder word van die mees prominente teoretici binne die veld van kinderliteratuurvertaling bespreek en daar word spesifiek gefokus op Riitta Oittinen se idees oor die Bakhtiniaanse dialoog en karnavalisme met betrekking tot die vertaling van kinderliteratuur. ’n Funksionalisties dialogiese benadering tot die praktiese vertaling van De zusjes Kriegel het gelei tot ’n oorwegend geneutraliseerde en gedomestikeerde vertaling waarin die bronteks vir ’n Britse doeltekskultuurkonteks aangepas is. Hierdie strategie is gekies om te verseker dat die doelteksleser die vertaling positief in sy/haar doeltekskultuur sal ontvang. ’n Kleinskaalse empiriese resepsieondersoek het hierdie positiewe resepsie, asook van die tesis se voorveronderstellings bevestig. Dit is onder andere dat Engelssprekende kinders nie toegang tot en kennis van ’n vreemde letterkunde het nie. Abstract:
This study explores the cultural dimension of translating children's and adolescent literature. Framed within the theories of cultural studies, translation studies, Baktinian dialogism, and reader response theories, this study is three-fold: (1) a content analysis is conducted to identify the cultural and linguistic shifts in the translated books and the strategies utilized by the translators for making those shifts, (2) the responses of the source-text (ST) and the target-text (TT) readers are compared; (3) the potential relationship between the translation strategies and the reader responses are inferred based on the findings from (1) and (2). The expected findings are: (1) adept use of various translation strategies helps the TT readers recognize themes as similar as the ST readers; (2) some interventions may create deviating responses in the TT readers as compared with the ST readers; (3) some unique responses by either the ST or the TT readers may be as a direct result of cultural differences more than the translation strategies. The implication section provides recommendations to publishers, translators, educators, parents, teacher educators, and researchers, and suggestions for further research.

Abstract:
The two aims of this thesis are to analyse how expressive language can be employed and translated in children's literature and also to investigate the roles of power and historicity in this. Using a corpus of twenty children's books (the thirteen Lemony Snicket works, the two Alice books by Lewis Carroll, Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and four books by Roald Dahl, The BFG, The Witches, Matilda, and George's Marvellous Medicine) and their forty-five translations to Swedish, I examine 749 examples of neologisms, 224 of names, 168 of idioms, 151 of allusions, 10 of puns, and 10 of dialects, for a combined total of 1322 distinct examples of expressive language and 1971 translations. I use quantitative, qualitative, and comparative analyses to study the examples of expressive language, their functions, and their translations. Based on this, I create a typology of expressive language and how it is employed, a typology of possible translatorial strategies for translating it, and I also show how the issues of power and time may influence the translation of expressive language in children's books. My findings suggest that in this corpus of texts, the authors frequently employ expressive language in ways that serve themselves rather than serving the child readers while some translators tend to assume that expressive language is too difficult or inappropriate for children and they therefore choose translatorial strategies that smooth out or remove such language, even to the extent of drastically changing features that the original authors purposely included. Additionally, this seems to have been the case in Sweden particularly during the period of the 1940s through the 1970s, which I suggest has something to do with world events and the ways in which they influenced the subject matter of children's literature and ideas about childhood

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: South African author Linda Rode‘s book In die Nimmer-Immer Bos (2009a) and Elsa Silke‘s English translation thereof In the Never-Ever Wood (2009b) have won a number of prizes in South Africa, which is evidence both of the quality of the anthology and its translation, as well as of the continued significance of the folktale genre in today‘s fast-paced, modern society. People continue to make sense of the world through telling stories and, although the stories told today might be marked by life in the 21st century, our ancestors‘ stories are still appreciated by many. Although Rode‘s tales are not unlike other folktales, her collection differs in that it is a mosaic of cultures and their folklore spanning the globe, a book that appeals to the whole family, and to young readers and listeners in particular. Through a practical translation into German of selected tales from Silke‘s English version of Rode‘s book, the present thesis investigates ways and means of translating folktales for children. A functional approach was suggested, taking into account the European audience as well as the original intention of the author. As such, the author‘s style was naturalised and an attempt was made to replicate it in the target language, whereas culture-specific items relevant to the setting of the individual tales were retained. Hans J. Vermeer‘s skopos theory, as enhanced by Christiane Nord, as well as Lawrence Venuti‘s concepts of foreignisation and domestication were discussed, amongst other relevant theories. Many of the challenges discussed in the annotations to the practical translation typically occur in the translation of literature for children, and the study thus hopes to make a contribution to research on the translation of literature for children. Interviews conducted for the purpose of the present study furthermore proved the positive impact of good cooperation between the people involved in a translation project on the final translation product. The resulting translation, meant to impart knowledge and pleasure to the audience, furthermore serves as a translation sample that is intended to entice German publishers to commission a translation of Rode‘s anthology for the German book market.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die Suid-Afrikaanse skrywer Linda Rode se boek In die Nimmer-Immer Bos (2009a), sowel as die Engelse vertaling daarvan deur Elsa Silke, getiteld In the Never-Ever Wood (2009b), is in Suid-Afrika met verskeie pryse bekroon. Hierdie erkenning is ‘n bevestiging van die gehalte van die antologie en van die vertaling, sowel as van die voortgesette belangrikheid van volksoorleweringe as genre in die gejaagde, moderne samelewing van vandag. Mense maak steeds sin van die wêreld deur stories te vertel, en hoewel die stories wat vandag vertel word meestal handel oor die lewe in die 21ste eeu, word die stories van ons voorouers steeds deur baie mense waardeer. Hoewel Rode se verhale nie besonder anders as ander volksverhale is nie, verskil haar versameling in dié opsig dat dit ‘n mosaïek van kulture en volksoorleweringe van regoor die wêreld is. Abstract:
Studies dealing with the translation of children's literature from English into Arabic are almost non-existent in both the West and the Arab world. This is despite the fact that most Arabic children's stories are mainly translation from foreign languages in which English as a source language has pride of place. Such a situation may be attributed to the fact that children's literature in the Arab world is regarded as subsidiary to adult literature and, thus, is not sufficiently discussed in literary, linguistic and/or translation studies. The thesis presents textual analyses of translation of children's literature from English into Arabic. To facilitate analyses, a framework will be developed, making use of a number of insights, including some recent text-linguistic approaches and the literary polysystem theory. An attempt is made to establish a connection between the various components of a children's story, including illustrations, and the textual choices of the translator. A number of stories translated from English into Arabic will be analysed both at the macro- and micro- levels of the text. Most of the stories used in this research are aimed at children between the age group of 4-8 years old. A range of issues will be discussed in the thesis. These include the influence of Arabic diglossia on translation children's literature (register); the way writers in Arabic and English construct their messages according to their intended audience and the influence of that on the target language reader (pragmatics); and the continuous interaction between the textual material and illustrations in both the source and target language texts (text-type, genre, discourse and illustrations).

兒童文學故事經典Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (以下簡稱Alice)創作於1865年的英國。在原著作者路易斯·卡羅爾(Lewis Carroll)筆下,故事主角愛麗絲展現了好奇勇敢、能思善辯、富有主見的兒童形象,她的漫遊奇遇詮釋了她由脆弱被動到強勢自主的形象轉變。1922年,愛麗絲藉由趙元任的Alice華文譯本第一次進入華文語境,由此展開她在華文地區(中國大陸地區、港澳台地區、新加坡和馬來西亞華人地區)迄今長達93年的旅行。旅程中,隨著譯本出現時間和地域的不同,被構建出的愛麗絲華文形象互不相同,構建這些華文形象的成人譯者亦扮演著不盡相同的角色。本研究以文學理論家愛德華·賽義德(Edward Said)的「旅行四階段」和「歷史與情境」論為基本理論框架,並融入比較文學形象學(Imagology)中「自我--他者」這一核心概念帶來的啟示,由此推導出符合「歷史與情境」且強調人為因素的關鍵概念,即由成人自我構建出的他者「兒童形象」概念。在上述理論架構引導下,本研究首先對1922--2014年間的338個Alice華文譯本的譯本特點和出現原因進行分析和闡述,勾畫出愛麗絲在四個華文地區兩段旅程五條路線的旅行全景,再以四個華文地區中的6個Alice華文譯本為個案代表,深入探討成人譯者在構建愛麗絲華語形象過程中採取的翻譯策略、方法和來自其他參與者(如出版者、繪圖師、譯序作者等等)的制約因素。論文著重闡釋譯者在目標文本形象建構中的主動和被動特性,對每個案例中的成人譯者角色做了較為全面的解析。本研究得出如下結論:(一)華文地區「兒童形象」因「時」、因「地」不同而表現形式不同,它直接影響和決定Alice華文譯本出版數量和形態等譯本特徵的形成和演變,這是愛麗絲華文旅行呈現出的主體情形;(二)在愛麗絲華文形象的具體建構過程中,因譯本創作時間和地點不同,目標文本形象會在源文本形象的兩個組成部分(即:形象側面和形象轉變)出現不同程度的改變;(三)譯者主動特性和被動特性的作用過程即為愛麗絲華文形象的構建過程;在源文本和目標文化「兒童形象」的雙重影響下,成人譯者做出了靈活度不同的個人選擇,定義了複雜和多重的譯者角色。

Abstract:
The aim of the paper is to analyse the translations of the chosen novels of Terry Deary’s Horrible Histories series into Lithuanian and to find out the main problems in children’s and youth literature translations. The present paper intends to address a pertinent issue related to the process of translation. The issue that dominates the field of translation is the lack of attention towards the analysis and criticism of translation. Little research has been done in order to analyse the translations from the English into Lithuanian language with the pursuit of improving their quality. In addition, even less is known about the analysis of children’s and youth literature translations. The most prominent problems in Terry Deary's "Horrible Histories" translations are the following: Age Level and Appropriate Vocabulary Choice, SL and TL Linguistics and Cultural Context Adaptation, Equivalence and Fluency, Wordplay and Puns, Intertextuality, Text and Image Relationship, and Translatability of Proper Names. Dėmesys skiriamas vertimo proceso problematikai.Viena svarbiausių problemų, dominuojančių vertimo srityje yra tai, kad labai mažai dėmesio skiriama vertimų iš anglų į lietuvių kalbą analizei, kuri padėtų pagerinti vertimų kokybę. Dar mažiau yra žinoma apie vaikų ir jaunimo literatūros vertimų analizę. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The epic of Gilgamesh is the oldest recorded story known to humanity. It has a long and complex textual history. The final version of the epic, generally known as the standard version, was produced about 1200 B.C. in the Babylonian dialect of Akkadian by a priest and scribe named Sin-leqi-unninni. The cuneiform tablets upon which the epic was recorded, were rediscovered during the nineteenth century when European archaeologists started digging in the ancient cities of the Middle East, especially Nineveh. Since then the story has been translated into many languages; several English translations have been published. Some of these translations of the epic maintain epic poetic form, others are in prose, and there are a number of versions for children. At the moment no complete version exists in Afrikaans. This thesis presents a translation of parts from Geraldine McCaughrean's English children's version, which was published in 2002. McCaughrean adapts the structure of the standard version, clearly a strategy to make her text exciting for modern readers. The theoretical insights of André Lefevere and Lawrence Venuti form the paradigm for the translation process. Lefevere sees translation as one of a number of rewriting techniques. The detail of such a rewriting is determined by the poetics of the target culture, the patronage which enables such a translation to exist, and the ideological framework within which the rewriting develops. Venuti distinguishes between two translational approaches: a domesticating translation adapts the translation to the target culture and creates the impression with readers that they are reading an original text; foreignising translation makes the readers aware that they are reading a text from another culture. The opportunities and limitations of children's literature and translation for children are explored. Specific attention is given to taboo topics, as a number of these appears in the Gilgamesh Epic. The writers of the children's versions have solved these problems in different ingenious ways. Annotations shed light on the translational challenges and the decisions of the translator. Finally the whole project is evaluated and suggestions for further research are made.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die Gilgamesj-epos is die mensdom se oudste opgetekende verhaal. Dit het ‘n lang en komplekse ontstaansgeskiedenis. Die finale variant van die epos, wat algemeen bekend staan as die standaardweergawe, is ongeveer 1200 v.C. in Babiloniese Akkadies geskryf deur ‘n skriba-priester genaamd Sin-leqi-unninni. Die spykerskriftablette waarop dit opgeteken is, is gedurende die negentiende eeu herontdek tydens argeologiese opgrawings van die verwoeste antieke stede in die Midde-Ooste, veral Nineve. Sedertdien is die verhaal in verskeie tale vertaal; daar bestaan etlike vertalings in Engels. Hierdie vertalings van die epos word soms aangebied as epiese gedig, in ander gevalle in prosavorm, en daar bestaan ook ‘n paar verskillende weergawes vir kinders. Daar bestaan tans egter geen volledige weergawe in Afrikaans nie. This thesis uses a multidisciplinary approach drawing primarily on archival and bibliographical research as well as the fields of children’s literature, book history and translation to explore British translation of Nordic children’s fiction since 1950. Which works of Nordic children’s literature have been published in the UK during the period in question? And how were Nordic children’s authors and texts selected by British publishers, along with British translators and illustrators? Chapter One gives an overview of limited past research in this area, focusing on publishing and book history and Translation Studies (particularly Polysystem Theory). Chapter Two considers bibliographical research already undertaken in Children’s Literature Translation Studies and is followed by a detailed study of the British National Bibliography (1950-2000). This methodological approach has documented for the first time the depth and breadth of the corpus of British translations of Nordic children’s fiction since 1950, enabling key authors, publishers, translators and genres to be identified. A brief analysis is given of the Golden Age of Nordic children’s literature in British translation up to 1975, followed by a decline into the twenty first century. The thesis then goes on to examine the principles and practices of text and translator selection as its second major research element, with extensive use made here of archival sources. Chapter Three explores publishing archives as a research resource and details issues in their distribution and potential use. Chapter Four gives an overview of the key role of the editor as a centre pin in the process of publishing works in translation, drawing on a wide range of publishing archives as well as introducing the case study part of the thesis which examines an independent press and a major international academic publishing house. Chapter Five looks in detail at the role of author-educator-publisher Aidan Chambers in publishing Nordic children’s literature in the early 1990s through small press Turton & Chambers. Chapter Six examines the role of Oxford University Press in publishing Nordic authors from the 1950s to the 2010s, in particular Astrid Lindgren. This thesis aims to make a significant and unique scholarly contribution to the hitherto neglected study of the translation of children’s literature into British English, offering a methodological framework (bibliographical and archival) which has potential for use with other language systems and with adult literature in translation.

Since the late 1990s there has been an increasing interest in the representation of Balkan culture in the literary works of authors writing in English. Scholars (Bakić-Hayden 1995, Todorova 1997, Goldsworthy 1998, Norris 1999, Hammond 2010) have shown how literary representations of the Balkans have reflected and reinforced its stereotypical construction as Europe’s “dark and untamed Other. However, the contribution of translated literature in the representation of these images has rarely been considered, and in particular that of children’s literature has been seriously neglected. Thus, this study of images of the Western Balkans in translated children’s literature published in the period of 1990 2013, adds a hitherto uncharted literary terrain to the Balkanist discourses and helps shed a new and more complete light on the literary representations of the Balkans, and the Western Balkans more precisely. Children’s literature has been selected for the scope of this study due to its potential to transform and change deeply rooted stereotypes. The study approaches translations as framing and representation sites that contest or promote stereotypes in the global literary market. English has been selected as a target language due to its global position as а mediating language for the promotion of international literature, and with that also carrying stereotypes and transmitting them efficiently. This study looks at the images embedded in the texts, both source and target, and their representation in translation, including the translator’s interventions, but even more at the level of paratexts, and especially in the use of illustrations. It also examines adaptations accompanying the presentation of the translated book into the target society, such as documentaries, music scores and theatre performances. The discussion also considers how a book is selected for translation, and how different production participants contribute in the whole process of translation, including their motivations and goals, as well as their location. Using the methodology of imagology (Leerssen, 2007), and multimodal visual analysis (Kress and van Leeuwen, 1996, 2006), five case studies are elaborated, covering books from five different countries in the Western Balkans (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, Macedonia, and Montenegro) and from five different types within children’s literature (non-fiction, anthology, novel, picturebook, and an e-book). The five case studies confirm the complexity of the topic at hand. Although there are no firm patterns in the production of English translations of contemporary children’s literature from the Western Balkans we can point out several observations. While the translations of the text, in most cases, closely follow the source text, with only slight interventions by some of the translators, the translated books differ quite significantly in their paratexts, especially illustrations and adaptations accompanying the book for the target culture. In terms of the representation of violence, as one of the predominant stereotypical characteristics of the Western Balkans, images vary from direct representation of violence to full erasure of violent acts. The discussion on presenting violence is analysed from two distinct points of view, the two traits of auto- and hetero- images as identifies in the case studies. In cases of self-representation, the case studies show a network of production participants in which the source author can be seen as the driving force in the process, usually recruiting friends and supporters to perform other tasks in the process translators, illustrators, publishers, etc. The auto-images take the form of ‘nesting’ Balkanisms, balancing (non)violent masculinities, or centring on love and humaneness. On the other hand, networks led by translators/editors located in the target culture will more often be motivated by commercial factors, along with representation of the source culture, thus either emphasizing the preconceived stereotypes of dominant violence in the Western Balkans, or turning towards globalizing the images of violence.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the translations and retellings of stories aimed at children that have been published in the Irish language between 1922 and 2012. The central role of the state-led publishing house, An Gum, in creating a corpus of literature for children is analysed using unpublished correspondence from the publisher's archives. The ideologies behind the choice of texts published by An Gum and by various other publishing houses are also examined. Of particular interest are the translation strategies that can be seen in the retellings and adaptations of traditional stories, as well as in the translations of canonical children's novels in this time frame. The effect that the boom in immersion education had on publications is analysed, as well as the role of international book fairs, such as those held in Frankfurt and Bologna, in corpus creation for children. Throughout the thesis, the context in which translation takes place and the practical function of translated texts are examined, as well as historical and contemporary trends. To further illuminate the methodologies that were used in this period, some of the most interesting phenomena in Irish-language publishing for children are analysed in the form of case studies. The thesis culminates in a practical case study in which I have chosen a French text for translation into Irish, and have justified the choices I have made in the creative translation process.

The thesis sets out to examine the little studied phenomenon of translating and rewriting children’s literature during Fascism. Under Mussolini’s rule, books for children had to perform the important task of forging the ‘new Italians’. For this reason, the presence of foreign literature on the Italian book market became increasingly problematic, as the regime attempted to achieve cultural and economic autarchy. This research aims to show how, rather than merely reflecting dominant ideologies, the translation of books for children was a site for negotiation, allowing different, and sometimes conflicting narratives and discourses to be identified and fruitfully examined. By adopting an interdisciplinary theoretical framework, where theories from Translation Studies, Children’s Literature, and studies on Fascism, are integrated, translations and rewritings of books for children are employed as hermeneutic tools to explore the multifaceted nature of the regime’s ideology and cultural production, beyond the official façade of unity and consistency. Central questions concerning the construction and defense of Fascist identity are addressed through a selection of case studies, showing different strategies and functions of translating and rewriting for children. The Fascist rewritings of Collodi’s Pinocchio are analysed in relation to Fascism’s relationship with tradition, focusing on the ways in which the past was ‘rewritten’ at different phases of the dictatorship. The challenges of translating a book that had been openly condemned by Fascist institutions are examined by looking at the two translations of Alice in Wonderland which appeared during the 1930s. The complex reception and the controversial success of American comics is investigated, where the different strategies of translation and re-creation reveal complex dynamics of interactions between imported and native products. Finally, the process of rewriting an apparently timeless and universal tradition is observed in the book series ‘La Scala d’Oro’, which was highly regarded by official culture, despite publishing mostly foreign titles.

Abstract:
The translation and publication process of foreign literary works and particularly of children’s literature in Russia has been through various changes and reforms following the socio-political shifts that occurred in different periods of Russian history. This thesis examines three Russian translations of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland published before, during and after the Soviet Era. This periodisation is essential, as the main research question of the thesis is how the shifting socio-political circumstances and ideologies governing Russia in each of the three periods examined affected the translation of children’s literature. The study focuses on power and authority references, which are frequently identified in the book, as the creatures of Wonderland constantly insult and terrify Alice in their attempt to seize power. Through these examples and drawing on Even-Zohar’s polysystem theory, Toury’s concept of norms and House’s model of translation quality assessment, this thesis also answers questions as to how the norms prevailing in the source culture are transferred to the target culture, as well as what translation strategies are used by the Russian translators of Alice Adventures in Wonderland in each of the periods examined. Since the study takes place in a Russian context, references to censorship in translation and publication of children’s literature are inevitable, as previous research has demonstrated that publications were under state control, particularly during the Soviet years. Therefore, the translations used here as observational material, are also examined for any potential censorship effect. Despite the fact that the same examples are examined in all three translations, the result and the translators’ choices, differ to a great extent. The pre-Soviet translation has many deletions, related particularly to the violent scenes of the book. The Soviet translation is a literal rendering of Carroll’s original story. Finally, the post-Soviet translation is a creative work, which contains many additions that bring the story closer to the mentality and understanding of the Russian readership.

Esta dissertação tem por objetivo identificar e analisar questões pertinentes à tradução da literatura infantojuvenil no contexto sistêmico brasileiro com ênfase nas soluções encontradas pelos tradutores perante os desafios tradutórios enfrentados. Com base nos Estudos Descritivos da Tradução e nos pressupostos teóricos de Gideon Toury, André Lefevere e Lawrence Venuti, é feito um estudo de caso de duas traduções brasileiras do clássico infantojuvenil em inglês Mary Poppins de P. L. Travers, de 1934. O corpus envolve, além do texto fonte de Travers, as traduções de Donatello Grieco, de 1967 (Record), e de Joca Reiners Terron, de 2014 (Cosac Naify). Visando à análise macro e microestrutural, os seguintes elementos são investigados: capítulos e títulos; parágrafos, períodos, orações e pontuação; a linguagem (discurso informal e vocabulário); nomes próprios; o lúdico; questões de gênero; situações pedagógica ou moralmente (in)corretas; a imagem da personagem Mary Poppins; e as ilustrações. A hipótese considerada é a de que os tradutores fazem escolhas e adotam estratégias tradutórias conforme as restrições impostas pelas normas de escrita da literatura infantojuvenil nos respectivos contextos históricos. A fim de entender as exigências e normas desse gênero literário, são analisadas também algumas características específicas da literatura infantojuvenil e de sua tradução: o público duplo formado por leitores infantojuvenis e adultos, bem como os efeitos dessa assimetria de poder; a filiação aos sistemas sociocultural, literário e educacional, assim como as restrições e normas tradutórias decorrentes desse contexto; e, por fim, a posição sistêmica periférica e a possível manipulação textual resultante desse posicionamento.
The purpose of this thesis is to identify and analyze issues specifically related to the translation of children s literature within the Brazilian systemic context focusing on the solutions reached by translators when faced with certain translation difficulties. Based on the Descriptive Translation Studies and the theoretical assumptions of Gideon Toury, André Lefevere and Lawrence Venuti, a case study is conducted involving two Brazilian translations of the children s classic Mary Poppins written in English by P. L. Travers and published in 1934. In addition to Traver s source text, the corpus includes the translation into Brazilian Portuguese made by Donatello Grieco in 1967 (Record) and that of Joca Reiners Terron in 2014 (Cosac Naify). By means of a macro and microstructural analysis, the following items are investigated: chapters and titles; paragraphs, clauses and punctuation; language (informal discourse and vocabulary); proper names; sense of humor issues; gender situations; pedagogic and morally (in)correct aspects; the Mary Poppins character image; and illustrations. The hypothesis is that translators make choices and adopt strategies according to restrictions imposed by children s literary writing norms within historical contexts. In order to understand these requirements and norms, some of the characteristics of children s literature and of its translation are analyzed: the dual audience composed of children and adults, as well as the effects of this power asymmetry; the affiliation to sociocultural, literary and educational systems, as well as the resulting translation restrictions and norms; and, finally, the peripheral systemic position and the possible text manipulation deriving from this status.

This research focuses on highlighting the main socio-cultural norms which determine translation flows into the field of Saudi Arabian children’s literature, and their influence on translation as a process and product. The study maps a range of key aspects related to translation and publishing practices for children’s books in Saudi Arabia. In this thesis, a mixed-method approach is adopted which integrates both quantitative and qualitative methods. The research begins with the collection of statements from publishers in the field, with the aim of evaluating their perceptions of which factors influence their decisions and affect individual translation flow. Following this, a bibliographic data-list is compiled of the translations available in the country for children, to allow a comprehensive mapping of the field. Finally, a number of children’s books which have been translated and published by Saudi publishers are used in both their English and Arabic versions as data for a comparative analysis of the effects of translation norms on the process of translation on both paratextual and textual levels. The methodology of this research has been constructed based on multiple theoretical backgrounds; the primary resource is Toury’s norms theory (1995/2012) although concepts from Bourdieu’s sociological approach, such as the notions of field and capital, are also used, together with elements of the translation-flow concept postulated by Heilbron (1999/2010) (Heilbron and Sapiro, 2007), and the manipulation approach discussed by Lefevere (1992/2005). The cornerstone of this study is the empirical bibliographic data-list of the translated literature available to Saudi children, due to its significance in the fields of both children’s literature and translation in the country. Following the identification of the main social agents in the field, detailed analyses of the main four publishers were carried out by applying the case-study method. The aim of this is the evaluation of each publisher’s perceptions, capital, translation policies and influential norms, among other issues. Lastly, this research identifies the major socio-cultural factors governing the field of the translation of children’s literature, such as the Saudi laws of publication and other social and ideological forces.

The translation of names is a topic for discussion within many fields, no less so within translation studies. Furthermore, the translation of proper names in children’s literature is a topic with on-going changes. There is a divide between those who believe that the names should be translated into proper cultural equivalent and those who believe it is time to have faith in children being able to handle foreign names. That is what this study will focus on. Approx. 15 names from seven children’s books from 1865 to 2011 were studied to conclude that there seems to be a greater faith in children’s ability to handle foreign names. Three languages were compared English, Spanish, and Swedish with the majority of the 337 names studied being kept in their original format, with spelling intact.
Översättningen av namn är ett diskussionsämne inom många områden, inte minst inom översättningsstudier. Utöver detta är översättningen av egennamn inom barnlitteratur ett ämne som är under ständig förändring. Det finns en klyfta mellan de som menar att namn borde bli översatta till sin kulturella likvärdighet och de som menar att det är på tiden att lita på att barn kan hantera främmande namn. Det är denna diskussion som kommer vara fokus för denna uppsatsen. Ca. 15 namn från sju barnböcker från 1865 till 2011 studerades för att visa att det verkar finnas en större tilltro till barns förmåga att hantera främmande namn. Tre språk jämfördes, engelska, spanska och svenska. Var utav de 337 namnen som studerades var majoriteten oförändrade i översättningarna.

A partir de minha tradução para o português brasileiro de The Magic Pudding (1918), novela infantil australiana escrita e ilustrada por Norman Lindsay, o objetivo desta dissertação é demonstrar as peculiaridades da tradução de literatura infantil ilustrada. Portanto, este estudo analisa o papel das ilustrações na tradução, enquanto levanta questões sobre a adaptação literária em uma época em que novos meios e tecnologias de leitura competem com o livro impresso pela atenção infantil. Como O Pudim Mágico é a primeira tradução da novela para o português, e devido à importância das ilustrações na narrativa, é proposta uma tradução estrangeirizada para que elementos da cultura e da natureza australianas, especialmente alimentos e animais, permaneçam visíveis no texto de chegada. Pelas mesmas razões, tanto o texto propriamente dito quanto as ilustrações são tratados como textos, respectivamente, verbal e pictórico, em oposição aos peritextos verbal e pictórico acrescentados ao texto de chegada. Este estudo é dividido em quatro capítulos: 1) apresentação da biografia e obra do autor, bem como do contexto em que The Magic Pudding foi escrito, seguida pelo resumo detalhado da novela, uma discussão sobre as peculiaridades da tradução para crianças e, baseadas principalmente em Lawrence Venuti e Gérard Genette, as justificativas para a abordagem estrangeirizante com o emprego de elementos peritextuais; 2) apresentação das estratégias de Javier Franco Aixelá para a tradução de itens culturais-específicos para discutir o tratamento de nomes próprios contendo significados culturais; considerando o leitor-alvo, é sugerido o acréscimo de elementos peritextuais, tais como novas ilustrações combinadas com um prefácio verbal, a fim de evitar o emprego de notas de rodapé; 3) análise da influência da ilustrações de Lindsay na tradução, com sugestões para o tratamento do texto verbal de chegada; 4) discussão sobre tópicos de adaptação e transmidiação de literatura infantil, com sugestões para tratar os textos verbal e pictórico na transposição de O Pudim Mágico de meio impresso a digital; com base principalmente nos estudos de Lars Elleström e Ellen McCracken, dispositivos digitais de leitura como o Amazon Kindle e o Apple iPad são analisados, concluindo-se que o texto-alvo é considerado uma tradução em formato impresso, uma remidiação em formato para Kindle e uma transmidiação em formato para iPad.
Based on my unpublished translation of The Magic Pudding (1918), Australian children’s novel written and illustrated by Norman Lindsay, this thesis aims at demonstrating the peculiarities of translating illustrated children’s literature. Therefore, it analyses the role of the illustrations in the translation while raising questions on literary adaptation at a time when new reading media and technology compete with the printed book for children’s attention. Given that O Pudim Mágico is the first translation of the novel into Portuguese and due to the importance of the illustrations in the narrative, I propose a foreignised translation to preserve Australia’s cultural and natural elements, in particular foods and animals, visible in the target text. For the same reasons, both the text proper and the illustrations are regarded as texts, respectively verbal and pictorial, in opposition to the verbal and pictorial peritexts added to the target text. This study is divided into four chapters: 1) a presentation of the author’s biography and oeuvre, as well as of the context in which The Magic Pudding was written, followed by a detailed summary of the novel, a discussion on the peculiarities of translating for children and, mainly based on Lawrence Venuti and Gérard Genette, a justification for the foreignising approach with the employment of peritextual elements; 2) a presentation of Javier Franco Aixelá’s strategies to translate culture-specific items in order to discuss the treatment of proper names that hold cultural meanings; considering the target reader, the addition of peritextual elements, such as new illustrations combined with a verbal preface, is suggested as a means to avoid the employment of footnotes; 3) an analysis of the influence of Lindsay’s illustrations on the translation with suggestions for the treatment of the verbal target text; 4) a discussion on issues of adaptation and transmediation of children’s literature, with suggestions for treating the verbal and pictorial texts in the transposition of O Pudim Mágico from printed to digitised media; based mainly on the studies by Lars Elleström and Ellen McCracken, digital reading devices such as Amazon Kindle and Apple iPad are analysed to conclude that the novel’s target text is deemed to be a translation in print format, a remediation on Kindle and a transmediation on iPad. Because child readers are still in the process of fully acquiring their language, children's books and their translations are closely linked to orality and the oral culture. Strong sound, rhyme and rhythm, which are habitual features of children's literature, also figure as important agents in the acquisition of language. Therefore, these linguistic principles might indicate a pedagogical skopos in the translation of children's literature, that of aiding in child language acquisition. Theory on sound translation and commentaries from translators of children's literature provide arguments for the importance of retaining sound and rhythm in translation. Analyses of three French-Canadian children's books translated into English provide practical observations of how sound and rhythm are translated in actual texts.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to analyse the problems met when translating culture-specific items in a text about Australian and New Zealand colonial and post-colonial children’s literature into Swedish. The analysis quantifies and describes the different translation procedures used, and contrasts different strategies when there was more than one possible choice. It also outlines the reasons for the choices made when creating a text adapted for a Swedish audience. The translation methods applied are dynamic equivalence and domestication. As for the categorization of the material, the theories of Newmark (1988) have primarily been followed. The study shows that the frequency of each translation procedure depends on the type of culture-specific item, and the chosen translation method. It is argued that transference is the most commonly used procedure, and recognized translations are not as frequent as could have been expected with the choice of domestication. This is the case for proper nouns and references to literary works, where transference and dynamic equivalence has been given priority over domestication whenever the factual content was considered to be the most important aspect to follow. As for culture-specific items of the category social culture, neutralisation is the most commonly used procedure. In such cases the domestication method was more influential than dynamic equivalence as the consideration of ethics as well as avoidance of cultural taboos in the target culture were considered to be more important than content.

The aim of this research is to explore cultural differences in the children’s publishing industry in the USA and Spain and the impact these have on translation, and to develop a case study of the translation of Dav Pilkey’s Captain Underpants series into Spanish from a cultural and linguistic perspective. The main aim of this dissertation is to demonstrate the ways in which ranges of meaning are narrowed, expanded or refracted in children’s literature translation and how they affect early readers’ understanding of the text (as more or less subversive), modelling all this as a dynamic rather than static system. Bakhtin’s concept of dialogism is applied to the Captain Underpants texts to show that the translation process is a continuum, never a finalized project, which can - and does - change with time. This dissertation explores the ways in which the translator of the Captain Underpants series, Miguel Azaola, negotiates the pressures and constraints, be they political, historical, cultural, editorial, commercial, or linguistic, which are imposed upon him via ideology, commissioning editors and the publishing industry. All translations imply a certain level of manipulation of the original text, and the translation of a subversive text written for a younger audience is even more vulnerable to change, due to the existing power imbalance between adults and children and the potential of humour as a tool for undermining or reinforcing social control. The Captain Underpants books mock and challenge authority-figures and the structures of the adult world (parents, teachers, political and religious institutions). These books provide a carnivalesque context that enables children to establish a dialogue with the text through which to question societal norms that have been learnt in school and at home. This dissertation examines how humour and references to food have been translated into Spanish in this context. It also points out the dilemmas posed by retaining the original pictures in the translated text, and how the lack of a supporting cultural peritext affects not only the visual meaning of the text as a whole but also children’s reading experience and their perception of the books as cultural artefacts. Translation loss in children’s literature can be attributed to linguistic difficulties of capturing meanings or stylistic features. However, it may also reflect societal attitudes towards childhood and cultural differences. The history of publishing for children in Spain and the didactic mission of the publishing house (El Barco de Vapor) have had a strong impact on the translation of this series. Examples of the manifestation of this impact include domesticated names, loss of word-play, discrepancies between pictures and texts, and the almost complete deletion of the dual readership (adult and child). Translation has diminished the potential subversive elements of the target text, resulting in a significant reduction of humour. By adopting an interdisciplinary theoretical framework, in which theories from children’s literature, translation studies, reader response and studies on recent Spanish publishing trends are integrated, this thesis aims to make a scholarly contribution to the hitherto neglected study of the translation of contemporary children’s literature into Spanish. Highlighting throughout the differences in the textual content and children’s responses to the translated texts, this thesis explores the editor’s and translator’s decision-making processes and the challenges posed by translation for younger readers.

The purpose of this research was two-fold. First, this thesis sought to uncover the implicit concepts associated with mothers in children's stories. Second, this thesis attempted to chart changes in portrayals of mother when translated from print to a visual medium. This research maintains that the concepts of mother in children's stories contain cultural ideals that are related to society's evolving perceptions of mother. Eighteen mother/surrogate mother portrayals were analyzed in 15 novels and 15 videotapes. Each portrayal was coded according to marital status, range of behaviors, 41 individual behaviors within five categories, and the amount of storytime. The results of this thesis reveal that the two most frequent behaviors associated with the role of mother in both media and print are authority and nurturance. The research also found that mother portrayals, when translated to film and television, displayed less dominant and less supportive behaviors than in print versions. Of the 41 individual behaviors coded in both novels and videotapes mothers in films and television were found to display less ability and more affection than their print versions. In conclusion, this study found that mother portrayals, when translated to film and television, may be altered to increase their mass audience appeal.

The aim of this study was to find out if there are any differences in the use of metaphors and similes in children’s literature translated from Swedish into English. With two books selected by the same Swedish author, three groups of metaphors were studied -- structural, orientational and ontological metaphors -- as well as two groups of similes -- same image and similar image similes. The result showed that the Swedish versions of the two books contained more metaphors than the English versions, whereas the similes occurred to the same extent in both languages.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Drawing on theories of gender and subjectivity, this thesis explores the way in which constructions of modernity as well as tradition are mapped onto geographical localities and thus expressed through gender acts. The female protagonists in Maxine Hong Kingston’s The Woman Warrior, Sindiwe Magona’s To My Children’s Children and Forced to Grow, as well as Eva Hoffman’s Lost in Translation undergo either transnational translocation or imagined translocation where they straddle multiple cultural contexts concurrently. The role of globalism and modernity amplifies the female’s ambiguous position and therefore challenges her gender identity as she takes on additional gender characteristics. This challenge, a result of translocation, causes both the individual and collective nature of the subject to be emphasised and placed in multiple cultures concurrently. The female’s subjectivity is under much tension as the cultures she immerses herself in interlace but also clash. As a result of this, her sense of self is constantly in flux as she attempts to achieve stability and coherence. This sense of a gendered, stable and located self will, I argue, both dissipate and transmutate upon undergoing physical or imagined translocation. In addition, this thesis examines the manner in which globalism allows for the dissolving of boundaries and explores the extent to which the ambiguous position these female protagonists occupy enables them to reformulate and refashion their gender identity as well as write themselves away from the marginalised positions they inhabit. I will further explore how female subjects are compelled to take on additional feminine or masculine attributes upon translocation, seeming to become androgynous in the reformulation of their gender identity for a certain period of time. I will argue that protagonists supplement their gender in order to obtain a sense of belonging in a specific cultural context which requires this alteration of gender, and argue that this is also a means by which they liberate themselves from the marginal positions they occupy in their ethnic culture where sexism and prejudice are prevalent. However, I will demonstrate that modernity does not only provide them with liberation and autonomy, but that simultaneously it is also restrictive on the subject’s gender identity. Finally, this thesis explores whether the female protagonists are able to use their ambiguous positioning strategically in order to generate coherence of the self yet, concurrently, maintain fluidity between multiple cultural boundaries of the self.

The present study is located within the framework of descriptive translation studies proposed by Toury (1995). Its main concern is the investigation of the treatment of cultural references, names and wordplay in the translation of children's literature into Arabic. The subject of the analysis covers three books from the famous series of Harry Potter by the English author J.K. Rowling and their published Arabic translations. Detailed analysis of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince which are translated into Arabic by different translators is performed with the aim of uncovering the translation norms of each translator. The third book Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was also translated by fans of Harry Potter in the Arab world. Comparisons between the official and fan TTs are also made. The analysis in Chapters five, six and seven shows that there is no clear coordination among the three official translators despite being commissioned by the same publishing House. While both of the translators of the Philosopher's Stone and the Goblet of Fire norms fluctuate between 'adequacy' and 'acceptability', the latter undertakes a distorting unstated abridgment of the original. The official translator of the Half-Blood Prince has the strongest norms among all with a clear tendency towards 'adequacy', while the fans lean more towards the pole of 'acceptability'.

It is a little-known fact that several modernists wrote for children: this project will focus on T.S. Eliot‘s Old Possum‟s Book of Practical Cats, James Joyce‘s The Cat and the Devil, Gertrude Stein‘s The World is Round and Virginia Woolf‘s Nurse Lugton‟s Curtain. While not often thought of as a modernist, I contend that Walter de la Mare‘s short stories for children, especially The Lord Fish, take part in this corpus of modernist texts for children. These children‘s stories, while scarcely represented in critical circles, have enjoyed a wide popular audience and have all been translated into French. Modernism is often considered an elitist movement, but these texts can contribute to its reassessment, as they suggest an effort towards inclusivity of audience. The translation of children‘s literature is a relatively new field of study, which builds from descriptive translation studies with what is unique to children‘s literature: its relation to pedagogy and consequent censorship or other tailoring to local knowledge; frequently, the importance of images; the dual audience that many children‘s books have in relating to the adults who will select, buy and potentially perform the texts; and what Puurtinen calls ‗readaloud- ability‘ for many texts. For these texts and their French translations, questions of children‘s relations to place and space are emphasised, and how these are complicated in translation through domestication, foreignisation and other cultural context adaptations. In particular, these modernists actively write against Rousseau‘s notion of the ―innocent‖ boy delighting in the countryside and learning from nature. I examine the international dialogue that takes place in these ideas of childhood moving between France and England, and renegotiated over the span of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. This study thus seeks to contribute to British modernist studies, the growing field of the translation of children‘s literature, and children‘s geographies.

This thesis explores Englishness and its representation in translated children’s literature in Russia during the Soviet period (from 1917 until 1991) and the post-Soviet period (from 1992 until 2015). It focuses on Russian translations of English children’s classics published between the late-Victorian period and the Second World War. It studies how Russian translations of English children’s literature construct literary portrayals of Englishness in varied socio-cultural and historical contexts. It investigates the complex processes involved in re-creating national specificities of English literary texts in Russian culture. The Anglo-centric essence of Englishness – or ‘dobraia staraia Angliia’ [good old England] – is expressed to a greater degree in the classics of English children’s literature. It is this particular idealised Englishness that is represented in the Russian translations. This thesis demonstrates that various manifestations of Englishness are modified in Russian translations and that the degree of modification varies according to changes in the political climate in Russia. A significant role is played by ideology – of a prevailing political nature during in the Soviet Union and a commercial ideology in post-Soviet Russia. The first chapter lays the theoretical foundation for the whole thesis and outlines the methodology adopted. Chapters 2 and 3 set out the contextual background for understanding Englishness by focusing on the question of Englishness perceived from English and Russian perspectives, and discussing the main tendencies of representing Englishness in both cultures. Chapter 4 presents the historical background by highlighting the political and cultural circumstances in which Russian translations were made. The second half of the thesis (chapters five, six and seven) focuses on the analysis of the representation of Englishness in Russian translations. Chapter 5 discusses which English children’s books, published between the late-Victorian period and the Second World War, were selected for translation and at what point between 1918 and 2015. Chapters 6 and 7 present the case studies in this thesis. These provide an analysis of how different manifestations of Englishness were translated and, taking into account the Soviet and post-Soviet historical contexts, examine why they were translated in certain ways.

A presente pesquisa insere-se na área de Estudos da Tradução e consiste em um estudo descritivo orientado ao produto. Tem como proposta examinar um corpus de diferentes retextualizações interlinguais e intralinguais, em português e em espanhol, das fábulas de Tomás de Iriarte, autor espanhol que publicou seu fabulário no século XVIII, o qual foi traduzido, adaptado e republicado diversas vezes ao longo dos séculos, em versão integral ou em partes selecionadas. Para tanto, descrevemos as diferentes operações realizadas nas retextualizações e procuramos colocá-las em relação com diferentes nomenclaturas utilizadas para designar ofertas informativas secundárias, ou textos que se derivam de outro texto que os antecede cronologicamente e visivelmente lhes serve como texto-fonte. Levando em conta que o propósito e o público-alvo das diversas retextualizações de mesmos textos de partida parecem ser a chave para entendê-los, conjugamos uma perspectiva descritiva e uma funcionalista para investigá-las, observando se parecem ter sido elaboradas com o propósito claro de atrair o público infantil ou não. O instrumental de análise básico é o modelo descritivo de tradução literária proposto por Lambert e Van Gorp (2011[1985]), combinado com o trabalho de Genette (2009[1987]) sobre paratextos editoriais. O trabalho estrutura-se em três partes, nas quais desenvolvemos uma contextualização do estudo, apresentamos o referencial teórico e o corpus, e desenvolvemos as análises das fábulas de Iriarte e das retextualizações selecionadas. Os resultados aos quais chegamos permitem classificar as retextualizações analisadas em traduções interlinguais, adaptações interlinguais, adaptações intralinguais e reedições, além de demonstrar procedimentos de tradução e de adaptação, tanto pontuais quanto globais. A pesquisa demonstra a pertinência da abordagem teórica escolhida para a discussão da nomenclatura dos diferentes tipos de retextualização possíveis, o que se obteve por meio de análises macro e microtextuais.
The present research is inserted in the Translation Studies and consists of a descriptive study oriented to the product. Its purpose is to examine a corpus composed by different interlinguistic and intralinguistic retextualizations, both in Portuguese and Spanish, from the fables of Tomás de Iriarte, a Spanish author who first published his work in the 18th century. Iriartes fables have been translated, adapted and republished several times over the centuries, in full version or in selected parts. In order to proceed the analysis, we describe the different operations performed in the retextualizations and try to relate them to different nomenclatures used to designate secondary offers of information, or texts that are derived from another text that precedes them chronologically and clearly serves as source text. Considering that the purpose and the target audience of the various retextualizations of the same source texts seem to be the key to understand them, we combine a descriptive and functionalist perspective to investigate those texts, observing whether they seem to have been aimed at children or not. The basic analysis instrument is the descriptive model of literary translation proposed by Lambert and Van Gorp (2011 [1985]), combined with Genette\'s work (2009 [1987]) on editorial paratexts. The work is structured in three parts, in which we develop a contextualization of the study; present the theoretical reference and the corpus, and develop the analyzes of the fables of Iriarte and the selected retextualizations. The results not only allow us to classify the analyzed retextualizations as interlingual translations, interlingual adaptations, intralinguistic adaptations and reissues, but also demonstrates translation and adaptation procedures, both punctual and global. Esta dissertação de mestrado estuda e analisa edições impressas de Peter Pan publicadas no Brasil, em português brasileiro, de 1930 até o momento. Propõe-se que exista uma norma ao se traduzir Peter Pan entre 1953 e 2011, qual seja, a de se utilizar a versão em desenho animado longa-metragem de Walt Disney como parâmetro, principalmente no que concerne à purificação do texto e ilustrações. Algumas obras receberão maior destaque em função de sua importância referencial e histórica, em especial a obra original de J. M. Barrie, a versão cinematográfica de Walt Disney, a adaptação de Monteiro Lobato e a tradução de Ana Maria Machado.
This dissertation examines and analyses printed editions of Peter Pan published in Brazil, in Brazilian Portuguese, from 1930 to date. It is proposed that there is a norm when translating Peter Pan between 1953 and 2011, which is to use cartoon feature film version by Walt Disney as a parameter, particularly with regard to the purification of the text and illustrations. Some works will receive greater prominence due to its referential and historical importance, especially the original work by J. M. Barrie, the film version by Walt Disney, the adaptation by Monteiro Lobato and the translation by Ana Maria Machado.

This thesis analyses the translation strategies for culture-specific items (CSIs) in the translations by four different Lithuanian translators of four British and Canadian novels for young people, "Alone at Ninety Foot" (2001) by Katherine Holubitsky, "Hit and Run" (2003) by Norah McClintock, "Double Act" (1996) by Jacqueline Wilson and "The Borrowers" (1952) by Mary Norton. All these novels have a great variety of culture-specific items, often reflecting the lives of children and adolescents and issues that are important to them. The analysis of translation of culture-specific items is based on the strategies suggested by Eirlys E. Davies, while the categories of culture-specific items that are chosen for deeper discussion are those of a higher importance for the characters or themes of the novel. Statistical analysis of the strategies helps to form a clearer picture of the strategic choices preferred by each of the four Lithuanian translators. The present work is divided into five sections and has two appendices. Section One introduces the purpose of the work and provides some information about the object of analysis: the translation of cultural references in four British and Canadian novels for young people. Šiame magistro darbe analizuojamos keturių vertėjų strategijos perteikiant kultūrines realijas keturiuse Didžiosios Britanijos ir Kanados jaunimo romanų vertimuose į lietuvių kalbą. Tai -Katherine Holubitsky romanas „Vienatvė prie Devyniasdešimties Pėdų tvenkinio“, Nora McClintock romanas „Pabėgęs iš įvykio vietos“, Jacqueline Wilson - „Mes - dvynės!“ bei Mary Norton - „Skoliniautojai“. Šiuose romanuose rasta daug įvairių kultūrinių realijų, kurios atspindi paauglių gyvenimą ir jiems svarbius dalykus. Kultūrinių realijų vertimas analizuojamas taikant Eirlys E. Davies strategijas. Šiai analizei atrinktos tos kultūrinių realijų grupės, kurios atlieka svarbų vaidmenį atskleidžiant romanų temas bei atvaizduojant pagrindinius veikėjus. Vertimo strategijų statistinių duomenų suvestinė padeda aiškiau suvokti keturių lietuvių vertėjų naudojamas strategijas. Darbą sudaro penki skyriai ir du priedai. Pirmame skyriuje pristatomas darbo tikslas ir analizės objektas - trumpai apibūdinamas kultūrinių realijų vertimas keturiuose Didžiosios Britanijos ir Kanados romanuose jaunimui. Antrame skyriuje paaiškinamos sąvokos, naudojamos kultūrinių realijų vertimo analizei. O presente trabalho tem como objeto de estudo as duas únicas traduções brasileiras do livro Le petit Nicolas, de Sempé e Goscinny (1960), e seu objetivo principal é a determinação do escopo dessas traduções e das características do público-alvo de cada uma delas por meio da apuração de seus encargos tradutórios. Como pressupostos teóricos que orientam esta pesquisa, destacam-se a Abordagem Funcionalista da Tradução, na ótica de Christiane Nord (1997, 2000, 2005, 2006, 2008), os estudos dedicados à Literatura Infantojuvenil (COELHO, 1980, 1991, 1993; HUNT, 2010) e à sua tradução (AZENHA JUNIOR, 1991, 1996, 2005, 2005, 2008, 2012). Aborda-se, também, o discurso de teóricos voltados para o estudo da Historiografia, com ênfase na historiografia da tradução. A análise dos dados baseou-se em três corpora: o primeiro corpus é constituído pelo livro original Le petit Nicolas, publicado pela Editora Denoël, cuja edição aqui consultada é de 1999; o segundo é a tradução de Marcelo Corção, de 1975, publicado pela Editora Artenova e o terceiro, a tradução da Martins Fontes Editora, de 1997, assinada por Luis Lorenzo Rivera; ambas as traduções levam o nome O Pequeno Nicolau. A análise dos dados aponta para a diferença de concepção sobre o fazer tradutório na qual a tradução operada pela Editora Artenova busca um resultado final que elimina a presença do estrangeiro no texto, enquanto a tradução feita pela Editora Martins Fontes resguarda, investe e insiste na presença da cultura estrangeira.
The aim of this work is to study the only two Brazilian versions of the book Le petit Nicolas, written by Sempé and Goscinny (1960). The main purpose is to define the scope of these translations and the target audience characteristics of each of those versions by analysing their translation-briefs. As theoretical assumptions that guide this research, stand out the Translation Functionalist Approach, in the view of Christiane Nord (1997, 2000, 2005, 2006, 2008), some studies dedicated to children and youth literature (Coelho, 1980, 1991, 1993; HUNT, 2010) and its translation (AZENHA JUNIOR, 1991, 1996, 2005, 2005, 2008, 2012).This work also focuses on theoretical discourse of the study of translation historiography. The data analysis was based on three corpora: the first corpus consists on the original book Le petit Nicolas, published by Denoël, whose edition consulted is from 1999; the second is the translation of Marcelo Corção, 1975, published by Artenova. The third was the translation of Martins Fontes Publisher, 1997, signed by Luis Lorenzo Rivera. Both translations are named O pequeno Nicolau. Data analysis highlights the different conceptions of translation work between the two publishers. While Artenova seeks a final result that eliminates the foreign presence in the text, Martins Fontes protects sources, invests and insists on the presence of the foreign culture.

Abstract:
This thesis explores how translators’ gender affects their reading and interpretation of foreign children’s literature, particularly from source texts by British male authors to target texts by Taiwanese female translators. It argues that masculine voices characteristic of British texts and Chinese translations from the early twentieth century have been changed both by modern liberal authors and regulated by emerging female translators working with female editors. The study examines ways in which translators reproduce social and gender norms from both the source and the target cultures. It also investigates how gender identity affects translators’ use of language and their attitudes toward the target texts of different groups of readers. The thesis provides historical background and an overview of the children’s publishing business and infrastructure in Taiwan before discussing polysystem theory and feminist criticism in relation to translation. It uses a combination of close reading and comparative analysis across a large sample of texts to identify instances where gender appears to have affected the translation. The analysis begins with classics – such as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) – that have been translated both by male and female translators. It then considers a selection of contemporary novels, most translated by women, as usual for translations of children’s books in Taiwan. Finally, a number of translated picturebooks are analyzed, revealing a set of highly feminized translation practices related to equally feminine paratexts. This thesis focuses on the way in which characters’ speech in the well-known American writer Katherine Paterson’s two novels for children, The Great Gilly Hopkins (1978) and The Same Stuff as Stars (2002), is translated by Romualda Zagorskienė and Renata Valotkienė, respectively in 1989 and 2005. The aim of this analysis is to consider and compare how Zagorskienė and Valotkienė deal with lexico-grammatical features that are hard to translate: grammatically deviant forms, colloquial forms, dialect and, especially, kinds of vocabulary that mark each character’s sociolect, such as the use of swearwords or name-calling. Further, the thesis looks at the effects of the strategies they choose on the presentation of characters and their relationships in the novels. The hypothesis that a number of lexico-grammatical features of characters’ speech will be standardized in translation has been raised, as this is suggested by current theoretical and practical research in translation studies. Thus, at first several relevant theoretical issues, based in particular on Gillian Lane-Mercier and Tiina Puurtinen’s theoretical research on the translation of tenor in fictional dialogues and literary sociolects, as well as what are known as the universals of translation are presented. Šiame darbe nagrinėjamos veikėjų kalbos vertimo strategijos įžymios amerikiečių rašytojos Ketrinos Paterson knygų vaikams „Smarkuolė Gilė Hopkins“ (The Great Gilly Hopkins, 1978 m.) ir „Kaip ir žvaigždės“ (The Same Stuff as Stars, 2002 m.) lietuviškuose vertimuose. „Smarkuolę Gilę Hopkins“ 1989 m. į lietuvių kalbą išvertė vertėja Romualda Zagorskienė, o „Kaip ir žvaigždes“ – 2005 m. vertėja Renata Valotkienė. Darbo tikslas – išanalizuoti R. Zagorskienės ir R. Abstract:
In today’s increasingly digitised world, we communicate both locally and globally across different languages, modes and media. Since the New London Group’s (1996) seminal ‘Pedagogy of Multiliteracies’ some twenty years ago, there have been further significant developments in the way we communicate, with the 21st century considered ‘the great age of translation’ (Bassnett 2014:1). Yet despite the increasing number of multilingual, multimodal texts we encounter, classrooms continue to teach traditional, monolingual print-based models of literacy. This research is therefore primarily in response to this rapidly evolving context, with a curiosity as to how international picturebooks might develop the skills learners need to succeed both now and in the future. The research process has been a journey comprising two separate phases of empirical study as I have sought to find out the best way to approach this topic. My initial focus, Phase One, was exploring the visual literacy skills of EAL learners and I completed a project in a primary school in Glasgow. As a result of the emerging findings, the research then changed in two ways – to a whole class approach comprising both bilingual and monolingual learners, and to a focus on translation. Phase Two comprised two whole class projects in the Scottish Borders, with my overarching question: How can translating both the verbal and visual in international picturebooks develop the multiliteracies learners require in the 21st century? In my discussions of multiliteracies, I have focused on four different areas: visual, critical, digital and intercultural literacies. Learners’ visual literacy skills were developed through their recognition of the cultural codes in visuals. Their critical literacies were developed through the recognition of power in texts, through deconstructing and reconstructing texts and seeking multiple perspectives. Digital literacies were improved through the critical retrieval of information online and through using tools such as Google Translate and, like Gilster (1997), I have suggested a key component of digital literacies is having an open mind as to the possibilities of emerging technologies. I also argue that intercultural literacy should be included under the umbrella of multiliteracies, in order to provide learners with the tools to navigate the increasingly multilingual, multicultural spaces they are likely to encounter, and offer tentative findings which show how translating international picturebooks has helped to develop these skills and attitudes. Prior to concluding the thesis, I briefly consider alternative lenses for the research, in particular Critical Race Theory, identity and translingualism. I then sum up the project in Chapter 11 and make some key recommendations, including the need for multiliteracies to be explicitly acknowledged in the curriculum and for international picturebooks, including those in the first languages (L1s) of the bilingual learners, to be introduced into classrooms to challenge the dominance of English and ‘what counts’ as reading. Alongside a discussion as to the limitations of the research and possible future directions, the thesis concludes with a call for both academics and educators to consider how the gap between research and practice might be reduced, to enable research such as this to have an impact on today’s literacy learners.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Lewis Carroll’s classic children’s tale Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, as well as its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, have the reputation of being the most quoted and translated texts of all time, after the Bible and Shakespeare. The status of the Alice books as timeless classics is confirmed by the numerous translations and adaptations of the texts that have already been made and is still being made. In this study, a descriptive investigation of André P. Brink’s Afrikaans translation of Carroll’s classic children’s books is undertaken in order to investigate whether the translation is still suitable for Afrikaans readers today. Brink’s Afrikaans translation of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was published in 1965, and his translation of Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There in 1968. Firstly, an overview of the most important theoretical contributions to translation studies since the nineteen-eighties is given to provide a foundation for the investigation and description of translations. Relevant terminology, such as adequacy and acceptability, will be explained. Emphasis will especially be placed on the interaction between the theoretical contributions, which will serve as a basis for the conclusion drawn regarding the suitability of the translation. The conclusion will be based on an application where the translation will be investigated. The translation is studied from a theoretical point of view on macrostructural as well as microstructural level. In the macrostructural analysis, references to the title, cover pages, illustrations, chapter titles, and the (in)visibility of the translator will be made. The microstructural analysis comprises an investigation of how Brink dealt with translation problems that arose during the particular translation. As a result of the investigation of the translation, conclusions can be drawn regarding the suitability of the translation for current readers. A recommendation on the possibility of a retranslation is also offered.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Lewis Carroll se klassieke kinderverhaal Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland en die opvolg Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, het die reputasie as die tekste wat, naas die Bybel en Shakespeare, die meeste aangehaal word en vertaal word van alle tekste. Die status van die Alice-verhale as tydlose, klassieke verhale word bevestig deur die verskeie vertalings en verwerkings daarvan wat reeds gedoen is en steeds onderneem word. In hierdie studie word ’n beskrywende ondersoek van André P. Brink se Afrikaanse vertaling van Carroll se verhale onderneem om vas te stel of die vertalings vir huidige lesers steeds gepas is. Brink se Afrikaanse vertaling van Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is reeds in 1965 gepubliseer en die vertaling van Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There in 1968. ’n Oorsig oor die vernaamste vertaalteoretiese bydraes sedert die tagtigerjare word eerstens gebied as gronding vir die bestudering en beskrywing van vertalings. Relevante terminologie, waaronder geskiktheid en aanvaarbaarheid, kom ook aan bod. Daar word veral klem gelê op die interaksie tussen die teoretiese bydraes, wat gesamentlik dien as ’n grondslag vir die gevolgtrekking wat gemaak word oor die gepastheid van die vertaling. Die oordeel oor die gepastheid, al dan nie, van die vertaling word gegrond op ’n toepassing waar die vertaling bestudeer word. Die vertaling word vanuit ’n vertaalteoretiese oogpunt op makro- sowel as mikrovlak bestudeer. Op makrovlak word daar onder andere verwys na die titel, voorblaaie, illustrasies, hoofstuktitels en die (on)sigbaarheid van die vertaler. Die bestudering van die vertaling op mikrovlak behels ’n ondersoek na Brink se hantering van vertaalprobleme wat in die betrokke vertaalsituasie ontstaan. Na aanleiding van die bestudering van die vertaling kan daar afleidings gemaak word oor die gepastheid daarvan vir huidige lesers en word ’n aanbeveling gemaak oor die moontlikheid van ’n hervertaling.

At present there is an extreme shortage in the publication of Afrikaans children’s books. Although revised publications of popular, classic series, such as the Maasdorp-, Trompie- and Saartjie-series can help fill the void in the market, the contribution made by translations of children’s books should not be underestimated: Afrikaans translations of popular children’s books, such as the Harry Potter- and Narnia-series are well-liked and can even encourage young readers to develop an Afrikaans reading culture. Young readers throughout the world get pleasure from the books written by the renowned German author Cornelia Funke. Funke is viewed as an influential author of children’s books and this is largely due to her popular fantasy-adventure Tintenherz; the extremely original plot of this fantasy-adventure, which forms part of a trilogy, persuades young readers to change their unenthusiastic approach towards reading by showing them that reading can be a pleasant, thrilling experience. This study attempts to prove that an Afrikaans translation of Tintenherz can make an important contribution to fill the void in the Afrikaans children’s literature, as well as encourage young readers to read more. Critics fear that translations of popular children’s books might flood the market with books that might be cheaper, but that are second-rate versions of the original texts since the translations fail to achieve the same literary standards as the original texts. This study attempts to prove that knowledge of theoretical translation strategies, such as George Steiner’s hermeneutic motion, Lawrence Venuti’s approaches of foreignisation and domestication, as well as André Levere’s approach of rewrite as a form of translation do in fact make it possible to produce an Afrikaans translation of Tintenherz which not only meets the requirements of the target-culture and satisfies the wants of the target-readers, but also upholds the literary standard of the original German text.

Cette thèse a pour objet de comprendre ce que représente la néologie dans le contexte de la littérature pour la jeunesse.Pour cela, une typologie des procédés de création lexicale est proposée, pour des occasionnalismes relevés dans un corpus de littérature pour la jeunesse. La taxonomie reprend les matrices lexicogéniques de Jean Tournier [1985] avec trois macro-mécanismes : néologie morphosémantique, sémantique et morphologique. Quatre procédés ont été identifiés dans cette thèse : formation lexicale, déformation lexicale, création lexicale et emprunt. Les innovations lexicales ne se limitent pas à des procédés lexicologiques. Certaines figures de style donnent également lieu à la formation d’occasionnalismes. Les matrices de Tournier ont donc été enrichies pour inclure tous les procédés identifiés par le biais d’un raisonnement inductif dans le cadre d’une étude exploratoire du corpus.Pour les besoins de cette thèse, un corpus de littérature pour la jeunesse a été constitué, comportant des œuvres représentatives des XIX° et XX° siècles en anglais, français, allemand et italien avec leurs traductions dans les trois autres langues. Le corpus comprend plus de neuf millions de mots. This thesis aims to understand what neology encompasses in the context of children’s literature. To this end, a typology of nonce formations is established to categorise occasionalisms identified in a corpus of children’s books. This classification follows Jean Tournier’s lexicogenic matrices [1985] with three macro-mechanisms: morpho-semantic, semantic and morphological neology. Four nonce formation processes were identified in this study: word formation, word de-formation, word creation and borrowing. Lexical innovations are not confined to lexicological processes. Some occasionalisms result from stylistic features. Thus, Tournier’s matrices were enhanced to include all nonce formation processes following inductive reasoning in a corpus-driven approach.For the purpose of this study a corpus of children’s books was compiled. It includes classics from the 19th and 20th century written in English, French, German and Italian with their translations in the respective languages. The corpus is made of over nine million words. It is aligned to enable contrastive analysis.This thesis also reviews the function of occasionalisms (sound effect, wordplay, attention-seeking device, anti-naming, hypostatization, deictic reference, and euphemism) and their translation (either based on the nonce formation process or reproducing the function in the source language).In the context of children’s literature, most occasionalisms are not coined for the purpose of carrying meaning (or filling a lexical gap). They play a metalinguistic and didactic role, inviting the reader to reflect on linguistic norms

ABSTRACT This paper contrasts J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series in the English original with its Swedish translation, by Lena Fries-Gedin. After an initial presentation of related research, some concepts such as implied narrator, implied reader, as well as intertextuality in translation and dual audience in children’s literature are explained. These concepts are applied to the two bodies of text to examine if they are identical in both the English and the Swedish versions. Some translational strategies are presented, and looking at examples from the texts it is discerned which strategies are being used. The Swedish translation’s use of formal ‘you’ to reflect the quality of inter-character relationships is discussed and examined, and the portrayal of sociolects in the original and translation are compared, concluding that the dialects are transformed into average spoken Swedish, and that adolescent speech is only partially transposed from the English original. There is also a comparison of differences in register, where the mentioned examples show that there is a loss of fluidity in style, and that the tone of the Swedish text is more dated than the English text. Some comparisons to other translations of Harry Potter are made, citing examples from other research, to view the Swedish translation in an international context. A brief comparison of the graphic design differences of layout is discussed, concluding that the Swedish design is likely more appealing to children.

Abstract:
This thesis is an examination of the effects of translation into French and of adaptation for the stage, in English, on the dialogue of Philip Pullman’s novel Northern Lights (published in North America as The Golden Compass). The study focuses on the speech of Lyra, the novel’s protagonist, in terms of both its linguistic qualities and the functions it supports within the novel and the trilogy of which it forms part, His Dark Materials. The study aims to identify the ways in which not just the linguistic surface of fictional speech is affected by translation and adaptation but also the degree to which the roles played by the dialogue in the source text are reflected or transformed in the different versions. The unusual research design, involving a comparison of the effects of interlingual translation and intermedial adaptation on the same text, consists of two main elements. In the first quantitative section, the relative incidence of three variables is measured for the purposes of identifying how features of spoken style and non-standard variation are treated. This analysis is followed by a detailed qualitative evaluation of a small number of dialogue passages that exemplify the key linguistic features and likely textual functions of Lyra’s speech in the novel. The passages concerned are compared with equivalent stretches of dialogue in the French translation and the theatrical script. The study finds evidence to suggest that Pullman uses dialogue in support of characterisation, plot, and also ideological and intertextual concerns. All of these aspects are affected, in subtle but significant ways, by the different decisions made by the translator and the dramatist in respect of Lyra’s speech. The study also finds that aspects of both user-related and situation-related variation in fictional speech may be worthy of further research.

No atual contexto em que vivemos, a globalização, isto é, o fenômeno que promove a aproximação entre países e as representações culturais de seus produtores, justifica-se destacar a mais importante tarefa nesta realidade: a tradução. Destacamos nessa pesquisa a relevância e posteriores conseqüências num contexto intercultural cuja direção tradutória seja de países periféricos para os demais países, como a versão da obra literária infanto-juvenil Do Outro Mundo de Ana Maria Machado para o inglês. O livro traz uma série de referências culturais brasileiras, referências históricas e de conscientização sobre a igualdade social e racial discutidas em uma linguagem para crianças. Ainda, essa tradução não foi realizada por um falante nativo da língua meta, mas por uma tradutora que tem como língua materna a mesma da autora e respectiva obra literária, o português brasileiro. Assim, articulamos a Estética da Recepção e a Imagologia, teorias literárias que dialogam com os Estudos da Tradução, para a formulação da seguinte hipótese, de que a apreensão da cultura brasileira pelo consumo de uma produção cultural, como o livro infanto-juvenil, por um público alvo peculiar que se encontra ainda em processo de formação de seus valores e visão de mundo, dentro do contexto cuja autora deteve enorme controle do resultado final, visto a sua parceria de criação com a tradutora, privilegiará a manutenção de traços culturais da nossa sociedade. Aqui, estes se encontram representados por imagens construídas pela escritora no original e, posteriormente, pela tradutora na tradução, dentro de uma temática de extrema relevância social, além de uma forma engenhosa que exige diferentes níveis de interpretação dos leitores nesse contato entre culturas. Assim, com base nos fundamentos teóricos, buscaremos demonstrar essa hipótese no nível discursivo em três pontos principais: a identificação das imagens no texto original e traduzido que apresentam marcas da identidade cultural brasileira; segundo, o fato de que tradução e original fazem parte do universo infanto-juvenil exigindo um enfoque na recepção estética; e por último, a particularidade dessa tradução, isto é, os desdobramentos de uma parceria entre escritora e tradutora que traz uma diferente perspectiva para o resultado final.
In the current moment we live in, the globalization, that is a phenomenon that promotes approximation among countries and cultural representations from their producers, we highlight the most important task present and essential within it: translation. We emphasize in our research the possible consequences within an intercultural context where the translation direction is from periphery to center, as we see in Do Outro Mundo by Ana Maria Machado and its translation into English. This childrens book brings many Brazilian references about History facts, social and racial civil rights. Yet, its translation was not made by a native of English, instead, a Brazilian translator who happens to be the authors daughter who contributed with this research by revealing some of the issues presented in this particular translation. Therefore, we articulate the Reception Theory and the Imagology Studies both literary theories with Translation Studies to formulate the following hypothesis: the comprehension of Brazilian culture by a specific target audience, that is, children who are still developing their moral and social values by a translation of a book which there was a peculiar interference by the partnership between the author and the translator. It will show as a result the maintenance of the cultural representation of our society. Thus, this representation is composed by the images constructed by the author in the original text and later by the translator in the translated text revealing a theme of enormously social relevance and within a form that demands from the reader different levels of interpretation.

Os contos de fada de George MacDonald são obras de grande influência no âmbito da literatura infantil, particularmente no caso de autores como Lewis Carroll e C. S. Lewis. De fato, muitos apreciaram suas histórias enigmáticas, que misturam humor e reverência, nonsense e sentido, luz e escuridão. Apesar disso, no contexto do português brasileiro, poucos dos seus contos de fada estão traduzidos e há ainda menos crítica literária disponível. Aqui procuro ajudar a preencher ambas essas lacunas ao produzir uma tradução comentada de três de seus contos de fada. O objetivo é realizar um estudo que encontre algumas das características literárias mais importantes nesses contos e, então, produzir uma tradução que leve em conta as percepções proporcionadas por esse estudo. Este trabalho contém, então, um exame crítico dos contos de fada de MacDonald, uma consideração sobre como traduzi-los, os três contos de fada em formato bilíngue (incluindo a fonte em inglês e a tradução para o português) e, também, uma seção comentando minhas escolhas de tradução e como elas se relacionam com as análises feitas.
George MacDonald\'s fairy tales are works of great influence in the realm of children\'s literature, particularly so for authors such as Lewis Carroll and C. S. Lewis. Indeed, many have enjoyed his enigmatic stories, which blend humor and reverence, nonsense and meaning, light and darkness. In spite of that, in the context of Brazilian Portuguese, few of his fairy tales are translated, and there is even less literary criticism available. Here, I aim to help fill both of those gaps by producing a commented translation of three of his fairy tales. The goal is to carry out a study which finds out some of the most important literary characteristics in these tales, and then produce a translation that is mindful of the insights provided by that study. This work contains, then, a critical appraisal of MacDonald\'s fairy stories, some consideration on how to translate them, the three fairy tales presented as bilingual texts (including the English source and the translation to Portuguese), and also a section commenting on my translation choices and how they relate to the analyses made.

Os tradutores têm um papel fundamental no cumprimento deste objectivo. Tendo como base "The Horse and his Boy" de C.S. Lewis, pretende-se analisar o papel do tradutor enquanto mediador cultural e as suas interferências na reposição do texto original noutra língua. Será feita uma reflexão sobre a literatura infantil e a forma como tem vindo a ser vista pelo mundo literário. Posteriormente, haverá uma análise relativamente aos modelos de tradução propostos por vários académicos e tradutores conceituados. Todos os modelos recaem sobre dois polos: ou numa aproximação do leitor ao texto fonte ou num aproximar do texto à língua e cultura alvo. Este trabalho apresenta uma reflexão crítica sobre o modelo de tradução que mais se ajusta à tradução de literatura infantil e juvenil estrangeira, tendo a obra de C.S. Lewis como caso de estudo; Abstract: Translation is a crucial tool regarding literacy and multiculturalism and it enables foreign works and authors to enter our lives. Translators play a fundamental role to achieve this goal. "The Horse and his Boy" by C.S. Lewis served as starting point to analise the translator's role as cultural mediator and their influence when rewriting the original text in other language. There will be a review on Children's Literature and the way it has been treated in the literary world throughout the years. Afterwards, translation models advanced by several academics and influent translators will be analyzed. All models focus on two poles: either bringing the reader into the source text or bringing the source text into the target language and culture. This work is a critic argumentation about the most appropriate translation model in the translation of foreign Children's literature, using C.S. Lewis's book as case study.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Few people realize exactly how complicated the translation of children’s poetry is. Translators do not only have to adhere to the young readers’ desires and satisfy the adult critics, but are constantly confronted with choices concerning the translation of the ‘play-element’ (structure) and the ‘visual element’ (content) of children’s verses, i.e. the translation of cultural elements, figurative language, pun, nonce words, onomatopoeia, alliteration, rhyme and meter. In addition, their translation strategies are continually subjective to and restricted by the visual text (illustrations) in the source texts, which interrelate with the verbal text (verses). In this descriptive, systematic analysis the Afrikaans and French translations of Mother Goose’s nursery rhymes, Dr. Seuss’s rhyming picture books and Roald Dahl’s verse fragments are compared to one another and the source texts in order to identify the various translation strategies and theoretical translation approaches used by the various Afrikaans and French translators, to make concrete observations about the translation of children’s poetry that can be useful for translators, and to establish if it is indeed possible to create translations of children’s verses that remain true to the ‘spirit’ of the original poetic texts, can function as autonomous texts in the target system, and that can supplement the Afrikaans and French children’s literature systems. __________________________________________________________________________
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Min mense besef hóé ingewikkeld die vertaling van kinderverse eintlik is. Vertalers moet nie net tegelykertyd aan jong lesers se behoeftes voldoen en volwasse kritici tevrede stel nie, maar word ook deurgaans gekonfronteer met keuses wat betref die vertaling van die spel-element (struktuur) en visuele element (inhoud) van kinderverse, o.a. die vertaling van kultuurgebonde verwysings, beeldspraak, woordspel, neologisme, onomatopee, alliterasie, rym en metrum. Daarbenewens word die vertalers se vertaalstrategieë beïnvloed en beperk omdat die visuele teks (illustrasies) in die brontekste deurgaans met die verbale teks (verse) in gesprek tree. In dié deskriptiewe sisteemondersoek word die Afrikaanse en Franse vertalings van Moeder Gans se kinderrympies, Dr. Seuss se versverhale en Roald Dahl se prosimetriese kinderstories met mekaar en die brontekste vergelyk om die verskillende vertaalstrategieë en teoreties gefundeerde vertaalbenaderings wat deur die onderskeie Afrikaanse en Franse vertalers toegepas is, te identifiseer, konkrete bevindinge oor die vertaling van die kindervers te maak wat vir toekomstige vertalers van praktiese nut kan wees, en te bepaal of dit inderdaad moontlik is om vertalings van kinderverse te skep wat getrou bly aan die ‘gees’ van die oorspronklike gedigtekste, as selfstandige tekste in die doelsisteem kan funksioneer, en die Afrikaanse en Franse kinder- en jeugliteratuursisteme kan aanvul.
