Abstract:
Overall attitudes, beliefs, and values have been shown to effect how individuals evaluate and process information. This knowledge is important and relevant to the practice of social work. Social workers are expected to put their attitudes, values, and perceptions aside when working with their clients. Attitudes are effecting processing and evaluation of events, therefore, it is imortant to understand the possible implications of workers perceptions and attitudes. Highly embedded attitudes toward transracial adoption, will influenceSocial workers behavior.

Full text
Abstract:
Social workers who interact with disabled children have developed unique attitudes and perceptions about physical disability in children and the disabling effects of material, social, and environmental components of society. Because of the unique problems associated with the care of physically disabled children, social workers are needed to provide ongoing services to help these children manage their disabilities and address their social and health concerns. This study was designed to elucidate the attitudes of social workers which may affect their interactions with disabled children. This information can be used to increase the effectiveness of social workers who plan to work with disabled children. This nationwide study is a preliminary investigation of the attitudes of social workers in children’s hospitals which are members of the National Association of Children’s Hospitals (NACH). Surveys were sent to seventeen social services departments in these hospitals and were distributed to full time social workers who interact with disabled children between the ages of 6 and 17. Sixteen surveys from 5 different hospitals were returned. All returned surveys were used in the study The survey consisted of three parts: 1) a demographic section; 2) the Attitudes Toward Disabled Children Scale; and 3) the Attitudes Towards Disablement Scale. The data were analyzed by using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences. Although the number of participating social workers was small, preliminary results indicate that social workers who serve physically disabled children have a positive attitude toward disabled children and feel that societal components are responsible for further disabling those children

Abstract:
Social work is a profession that espouses respect for the value of diversity. However, diversity is limited in social work programs as these programs focus primarily on the teaching of verbal methods of connection for social workers to engage with clients. Non verbal methods of communication are limited in social work programs. This inhibits diversity as research has demonstrated that many clients for various reasons are unable to communicate through verbal dialogue. This present study explored social workers attitudes towards the use of art in their therapy. Six social workers from a children's mental health agency were interviewed and the results indicated that social workers used art in their work and found it beneficial for their clients. The social workers limited education in non-verbal modalities of communication however, prevented them from using the art effectively. The study recommends that social work programs include nonverbal methods of communication to ensure diversity and best practice for the profession of social work.

Abstract:
An exploratory study was conducted to examine the effects of parental child protection employment on the children of the employees. Semi-structured interviews were conducted of eight children, who had one parent employed in a child protection agency in Eastern Ontario. The analysis of the interviews demonstrated perceived impacts on identified areas of the participants' lives: family transactions within the community; internal family functioning; and the impact on the individual participant. The interview results were also examined along four variables: gender of the child protection worker parent; gender of the participant; age of the participant; and position held by the child protection worker parent. Of these, only the gender of the child protection worker parent appeared to have a differing trend between groups. Further research is suggested to generalize these results beyond the participants in the study.

Full text
Abstract:
Many studies concerning multinational corporations {MNCs) are replete with theoretical models and case studies that treat MNCs as stand-alone entities. Very little time and effort is given to understanding the context in which MNCs operate. This context includes not only the fact that MNCs transcend national boundaries (political as well as geographical), but also the meaning of work and being part of a multinational work force for those employed within MNCs. This thesis is an effort to elucidate how the political/societal/cultural contexts of different host countries affect the attitudes of those workers most directly involved with foreign-owned MNCs. By shifting the focus from the MNC to the political/societal/cultural environment of host countries, foreign-owned MNCs can be compared across national boundaries (foreign-owned MNC workers from three different countries are compared in this thesis -- Canada, Brazil, and West Germany). Finally, by grounding the workers' attitudes within social identity theory, divergent attitudes between the workers from the different countries are not only explained, but expected as well.

Catling, Michael Vincent. "The attitudes towards, and expectations of, social workers in interprofessional collaboration for disabled children : fulfilling social work potential." Thesis, Swansea University, 2002. https://cronfa.swan.ac.uk/Record/cronfa42964.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis argues that social workers have the potential to overcome weaknesses in practice and difficulties in collaboration in the field of child disability. The study examines the nature of the relationship between social workers and other professionals. It explores how difficulties affecting collaboration are constructed and maintained, and considers how they might be overcome. The study explores the wide-ranging responsibilities that social workers carry for disabled children, and considers the particular importance of interprofessional collaboration and the social model of disability in their role. The thesis observes long-standing criticisms of social work practice in child disability work. Considering this, the adequacies of social work training and the place for specialisation in raising standards are explored. The thesis examines the relevance o f professional status in social work. This includes a discussion of that which characterises and constructs social work as a profession. The thesis explores how far a commitment to 'professionalism' is necessary for social work to fulfil its potential. Discussions highlight the inextricable links between social work's success in achieving professionalism and its relationship with employers. The discussion of research methods explains how the questionnaire and semi-structured interview were selected as tools for gathering the opinions of a wide range of practitioners concerning social work practice. The survey gathered the views of health and education professionals about the factors influencing their collaboration with social workers. Their opinions about social work competence in collaborative care planning for disabled children and families are discussed. The views of social workers are also explored, concerning their own practice and the adequacy of their training in preparing them for interprofessional collaboration and their role in child disability work. The survey provides insight into how the professionalism and potential of social work may be developed or restricted.

Staley, Linda M. "A comparative analysis of the perceptions of parents and caregivers concerning appropriate discipline of young children enrolled in child care." Virtual Press, 1993. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/861384.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was a comparative analysis of the perceptions of parents and caregivers concerning appropriate discipline of young children enrolled in child care. A questionnaire, the Parent and Caregiver Perceptions Concerning Appropriate Discipline for Young Children Enrolled in Child Care Questionnaire (PCPQ), was designed by the researcher. Through the use of a Likert scale, respondents indicated their agreement or disagreement with statements derived from various discipline philosophies. This survey was distributed to the parents and caregivers of young children enrolled in 17 licensed child care facilities throughout the state of Indiana. Of the total sample, 1,963 persons, respondents included 592 parents and 312 caregivers. Diverse ages and educational levels were represented. Females represented the largest group of respondents. While most of the parents were married, the caregivers were evenly divided between single and married. The mean response for caregiver teaching experience was 4.57 years. Factor analysis resulted in three factors with reliability coefficients above .65. Of the 40 items on the survey, only four were eliminated from further analysis due to a lack of reliability. Factor I included items related to the Need for Discipline, Factor II was related to the Need for Consistency, and Factor III was related to the Need for Authority. The mean score for each factor was computed. A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was conducted at the .05 level of significance.Results1. There was a difference in the perceptions of parents and caregivers concerning appropriate discipline of young children enrolled in child care. The hypothesis, there is no difference in the perceptions of parents and caregivers concerning appropriate discipline of young children enrolled in child care, was rejected, F(3,674) _ 4.58, R = .003.2. Univariate F-tests were conducted to determine if the independent variable (parent or caregiver) differed on all three dependent variables (Factors I, II, or III) or on just one. The difference was primarily in Factor II, The Need for Consistency, F(1,676) = 5.75, p = .017. Parents and caregivers had similar perceptions regarding Factor I; they agreed with the need for discipline. Parents and caregivers did not have similar perceptions regarding Factor II; parents agreed and caregivers more strongly agreed with the need for consistency. Regarding Factor III, they had similar perceptions in that they sometimes agreed and they sometimes disagreed with the need for authority.

Full text
Abstract:
Ajzen's Theory of Planned Behavior with the addition of Perceived Moral Obligation was used to investigate the behavioral intentions of 65 caseworkers of the Children's Services Division (CSD) to cooperate with Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) on cases involving abused or neglected children. Hierarchical regression analyses indicated that the subjective norms and perceived moral obligation constructs were significant predictors of the three behavioral intention categories and of all three categories combined. The two constructs, however, seem to have a considerable amount of overlap, suggesting that they may be measuring what is broadly called "social pressure to perform/not to perform 11 the target behavior. Perceived Behavioral Control was not significant in any categories and the attitude measure was marginally predictive. Possible reasons for the nonsignificant contributions of the two constructs include low inter-item correlations, questionnaire format, missing data concentrated in the two constructs, and finally, the notion that the caseworkers' attitudes and perceptions of control were of little consequence in their decisions to cooperate with CASAs. Of the three behavioral intention categories, all models performed best for the second category, 11voluntarily sharing pertinent Information about the cases with CASAs." The attitude construct performed best for this category, especially in the first and second models. Unlike the other two, this asked about the caseworkers' 11voluntary" cooperation. This finding seems to confinn the argument that Ajzen's models work better for a behavior for which one perceives greater volitional control. Prior, direct working experience with CASAs turned out to be an essential part of the attitude construct. The tested models performed better with the 54 caseworkers who had had direct working experience with CASAs in the last .. 24 months. This finding seems to indicate that the data from the 11 "no-experience" workers should not be combined with that of the 54 workers. Future studies of the theory of planned behavior with this sample are discussed.

Morojele, Relebohile Nthati. "Determining the attitudes/perceptions of retrenched Lesotho migrant labourers from the RSA mining industries regarding education using their career life histories." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/49907.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2004.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The level of unemployment in Lesotho has reached an alarming rate and this situation is compounded by massive mine retrenchments (Central Bank of Lesotho, 2001: 22). Given this background, it is imperative to gain a deeper understanding of the career life histories of retrenched Basotho migrant labourers in order to explain their perceptions/attitudes regarding education. In-depth individual interviews with 26 retrenched mineworkers were conducted for collecting data and a grounded theory approach was followed in analysing the data. The life histories of the men were critically investigated, from the time before they were employed in the mines, to the stage when they were working in the mining industries. The enquiry continued to a stage when they were retrenched from the mines. Their lives after retrenchment were looked at to establish whether they had acquired skills whilst they were employed in the mines. The objective was to determine whether the skills acquired were useful to them after retrenchment and if they could secure them employment in other sectors of the economy besides the mines. The study revealed that most of the migrant labourers had not acquired other skills besides those that were offered in the mines. As a result, all of the men were unemployed becausethey lacked skills that were relevant to the economy of Lesotho. Retrenched migrant labourers reported that education was important, especially for their children. For them, they indicated that they could pursue education if they would be employed in the mines again of it is offered where they would be employed, on the job training. The question is whether these men will secure employment in other sectors in Lesotho given that they lack relevant skills. It is advisable, therefore, for the government of Lesotho to facilitate career guidance in the country to encourage these men to acquire marketable skills and to promote employment creation.

Abstract:
As the English language holds the status of a Lingua Franca, being able to master it has become necessary in our globalised society. In Sweden, the English subject has been assigned a place along with Swedish and Mathematics as a core subject. However, of these three subjects, only English does not have specified knowledge requirements at the end of third grade. This has led to the start of English instruction varying around the nation. This thesis investigates the factors involved in the decision-making processes regarding the start of English instruction and what attitudes lower primary school teachers have regarding the age at which the English instruction should start. An empirical study was carried out by interviewing a few stakeholders in the context of schools and sending out questionnaires to lower primary school teachers. The results indicate that a large majority of the participants were in favour for early English instruction, as according to many of them, an early start results almost exclusively in advantages for the young children. However, the results also imply that the English subject, in some cases, might be less prioritised, due to the lack of specified knowledge requirements. Based on these results, further research on how different schools interpret these non-specified knowledge requirements is suggested.

The problem of housework and family care emerged after women entered the job market. In order to cope with the high daily needs of the elderly in the aging society and to meet the needs of the physically and mentally handicapped, the introduction of social welfare workers was introduced in 1992. There for Make the foreign labor force into the work area of the domestic helpers, care of the elderly diseases and care of the disabilities, As a result, there are many home care migrant workers into the family in Taiwan. In recent years, the various aspects of the rights and needs for the disabilities have gradually gained attention through the efforts of all walks of life in our country. In particular, the rights and responsibilities of students with moderate and severe mental and physical disabilities in the teaching and learning periods. The establishment of special education schools has become the most educational services to provide their place. However, in 1992, after the introduction of foreign family care workers, special education schools also appeared in different ecological. Another group of female studying accompanier appeared, they not only were accompanied by students with severe physical and mental disorders doing school learning task but were responsible for the children all the daily life and catering needs of care in the school. However, most of the female migrant workers are still exploring the roles and the functions of the work and the work content. There is little deeply research on the perceived cultural differences and mood adjustment of culture shock for those disabilities in learning process, So we can obtain information from the study by qualitative research in interview method after analyzing. We look forward to allow the community to better understand the group of silent to paying brave. Let we can see their paying and voice for them. Furthermore, we give due respect and interest to them for their diligence. Researchers use semi-structured interviews, which are often used in qualitative research, to help researchers to understand more deeply and comprehensively, and to explore the cultural shocks and adaptation experience perceived by migrant workers. The results are summarized as follows: First, female studying accompanier migrant workers in the course of adaptation to meet the U-type adaptation theory of the four stages: 1. honeymoon stage, 2. culture shock stage, 3. adjustment stage, 4. mastery stage. Second, the culture shocks faced by female migrant migrant workers are primarily divided into custom and tradition, behavior mode, and life habits. Third, female migrant workers will both appear psychological and physical discomfort in the course of adaptation. Also, they have different lengths of adaptation time affected by their age and background. Finally, according to the results of the study, it is suggested that: Intermediary companies should increase the training of mentally and physically handicapped persons in pre-service training; Employers should fully communicate their needs with the intermediary companies when applying; Employers should give more confidence and respite to foreign migrant workers ; Employers should give due respect and private space;Schools and teachers should not not regard studying accompanier migrant workers as the supporting staff on teaching site. Abstract:
Increasingly; child welfare authorities have become involved with families where domestic violence is an issue. This has been the result of improved understanding of the impact of witnessing domestic violence on children. However, child welfare has been criticized for the oppressive nature of the interventions with families where domestic violence has occurred. Critics have argued that an absence of understanding about domestic violence by social workers in child welfare has resulted in oppressive practice towards women and children. This study explored the perceptions of social workers in British Columbia's Ministry for Children and Family Development - South Fraser Region about the barriers to best practice in cases of domestic violence. An extensive literature review revealed eight barriers to best practice that contradict current best practice guidelines for cases of domestic violence. The findings of this study revealed that social workers identified that similar barriers to best practice exist in the South Fraser Region, thereby confirming the concerns in the literature. The use of factor analysis revealed that social workers are attempting to work with non-offending parents in amore supportive manner, but there continue to be systemic problems associated with child welfare services that impede workers ability to practice in a non-oppressive manner. Recommendations for improvement of service provision are outlined and discussed.

Abstract:
M.A (Clinical Social Work)
The Department of Health and Social Development (DHSD) has the crucial mandate of protecting the vulnerable groups within society. These include women, children and people living with disabilities. In order to attain this, DHSD has employed social workers and other social service professionals to render the required services. Sexual abuse is a violent crime that is committed on children, who form part of the vulnerable groups. This study aims to determine social workers’ perception of their role in the management of child sexual abuse in the West Rand, Gauteng. It further aims to make recommendations that will enhance social workers’ intervention with sexually abused children. Kantrowitz and Okun’s (2008) framework of the roles of social workers was considered when analyzing participants’ perceptions of their roles in intervening with sexually abused children. The concepts relevant to the study included social workers’ perceptions and social work roles. The research approach of the study was qualitative, as the goal was to describe and analyse social workers’ perceptions of their roles. The findings indicated that social workers were not clear on their roles when rendering services to sexually abused children. They do not utilise evidence-based tools, and they end up doing tasks that are supposed to be done by other service providers, such as parents or care givers. They furthermore do not feel confident to render therapeutic services, and require training and support in this regard. Recommendations made to DHSD included providing continuous training and debriefing sessions to social workers.

Abstract:
This study aimed to explore and describe the role perceptions of social workers working with children who have been sentenced to compulsory residence due to being in conflict with the law. Exploratory, descriptive, and contextual research designs were applied in using a qualitative research approach. The researcher collected the data using semi-structured interviews with all the social workers working with children sentenced to compulsory residence at Bosasa Child & Youth Care Centres. The data analysis was done using the eight steps identified by Tesch (in Creswell, 2014:198). The data verification was accomplished using Guba’s model (in Krefting, 1990:214-220). The research study provided valuable conclusions and recommendations to different role-players who have an interest in the role of social workers working with children sentenced to compulsory residence. The findings indicated the importance of regular training for social workers who work with children sentenced to compulsory residence to help children to deal with risk factors that may increase the probability of offences occurring.

The aim of this study is to investigate and discuss the attitude towards their peers from foreign spouse’ children of regular elementary school students in middle Taiwan. Questionnaire is adopted primarily in the approach; meanwhile interview also facilitates to conclude whether these children are accepted by their peers and what factors matter in between. All the participants who joined the research in 2005 came from those studied at grade 3 to 6 in regular elementary schools and with students from foreign spouse’ children in middle Taiwan. The valid samples were 887. Among the interviewees, there were 3 teachers and 6 students. The data collected were analyzed quantitatively by participant number, percentage, average, standard test, t-test, and one-way ANOVA. For those interview data which was transcribed and analyzed qualitatively. The followings are findings and results generated from questionnaire and interview: 1. The acceptable attitude of regular elementary school students toward those foreign spouse’ children tends to be positive and active. 2. The acceptable attitude of regular elementary school students under different variance: (1) Different habitation is significant for the acceptable attitude of regular elementary school students toward foreign spouse’ children: for those from countryside area are more positive and active than those from city area. (2) Different grade is significant for the acceptable attitude of regular elementary school students toward foreign spouse’ children: for those studied at grade 3 and 4 are more positive and active than those from grade 5 and 6. (3) Different contact level is significant for the acceptable attitude of regular elementary school students toward foreign spouse’ children: for those with more contact are more positive and active than those with less contact. (4) Different learning outcome is significant for the acceptable attitude of regular elementary school students toward foreign spouse’ children: for those with higher learning outcome are more positive and active than those with lower learning outcome. (5) Different gender and with/without public service are not significant for the acceptable attitude of regular elementary school students toward foreign spouse’ children. 3. The acceptable attitude of regular elementary school students toward foreign spouse’ children under different variance: (1) The acceptable attitude of regular elementary school students toward different gender foreign spouse’ children is significant: it is more positive and active toward male foreign spouse’ children than female. (2) The acceptable attitude of regular elementary school students toward foreign spouse’ children with different learning outcome is significant: it is more positive and active toward foreign spouse’ children with middle and higher learning outcomes than those with lower learning outcome. (3) The acceptable attitude of regular elementary school students toward foreign spouse’ children with different mandarin learning outcome is significant: it is better toward foreign spouse’ children with middle and higher mandarin learning outcomes than those with lower mandarin learning outcome. (4) The acceptable attitude of regular elementary school students toward foreign spouse’ children with different social-economic status is significant: it is better toward foreign spouse’ children with middle social-economic status than those with lower social-economic status. (5) The acceptable attitude of regular elementary school students toward foreign spouse’ children with different nationalities is significant: it is best toward those foreign spouse’ children from Indonesia among the nationalities, the next is from Vietnam and Philippine, and the last is from Thailand. 4. The main relevant factor to influence the acceptable attitude of regular elementary school students toward foreign spouse’ children is the behavior problems of foreign spouse’ children. 5. Abstract The purpose of this study was to explore pre-school teachers' attitudes toward the admission of children of foreign spouses on a higher priority basis in public kindergartens in Tao-Yuan County. In addition, the study investigated to what extent their different personal backgrounds and working experiences influenced their attitudes and what factor can predict their attitudes the best. 203 pre-school educators in Tao-Yuan County participated in the study. Among them 183 participants gave their opinions, 91% participatory rate was gained. The quantitative analysis of the questionnaires was conducted through descriptive statistics in order to indicate the direction and relationship between personal backgrounds of pre-school teachers and their attitudes. The main findings were as follows: 1. Results of this study reflected highly positive attitudes of pre-school teachers toward the admission of children of foreign spouses on a higher priority basis in public kindergartens. Pre-school teachers agree with this policy, and the need of children of children of foreign spouses; however, they have difficulties in putting the policy into practice and they need support from educational authorities and administration of school. 2. There were no significant differences in age, marital status, education level, education background, location of kindergartens, engagement in administrative job, and degrees of contact with children of foreign spouses on pre-school teachers’ attitudes. 3. The teachers with 6-10 years of experience showed the lowest degree of acceptance in comparison to the other teachers. 4. Teachers with 6-10 years of experience could be predicted to have lower attitudes than others.

Zikhali, Thulisile. "Mothering from across the Limpopo: experiences of Zimbabwean mothers living in Johannesburg." Thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10539/22237.

Abstract:
A research project submitted to the African Centre for Migration and Society in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Migration and Displacement March 2016
Migration patterns in Zimbabwe and the Southern African region have historically been male led and dominated. Recently, however, there has been an increase in the participation of women in migration in search of improved work and education opportunities. This feminisation of migration has implications on normative understandings of motherhood, family and gender roles. In particular, it may necessitate renegotiation of family roles: fathers and other relatives may be tasked to take care of and nurture the children, whilst mothers find alternative ways to mother from afar, suggesting changes in mothers’ productive and reproductive roles. Against this backdrop, the study explores mothering experiences of Zimbabwean women living in Johannesburg who left their children in Zimbabwe, or who have had children in Johannesburg and then moved them to Zimbabwe. Participants’ perceptions about motherhood, the challenges they face and the ways they try to overcome them are examined. Special focus is on single mothers who are employed in the low skills labour market for two reasons: first their mothering role gains particular importance in light of the absence of the father to help with parenting. Second, given the nature of their employment, they tend to face resource constraints which do not permit full-time mothering. The study draws from literature on transnational motherhood and transnational families and in-depth semi structured interviews with eleven Zimbabwean mothers living and working in Johannesburg. Constructivist grounded theory was used to analyse the data. As a mother who travelled alone to study in Johannesburg and who has a child in Zimbabwe, I am reflective of my position throughout the research process. Findings indicate that while mothers displayed agency in their conceptualisations of motherhood in the context of migration, they nonetheless viewed the ideology of intensive motherhood, which portrays mothers as selfless and fully dedicating their time to taking care of children at home, as an ideal form of mothering. This created challenges for them as they viewed themselves as not adequately exercising their mothering role and subsequently falling short of being ‘good mothers’ despite the important role they play as significant contributors to the household income in Zimbabwe.

Early, Marsha. "Fear of blame: post-Gove child protection in B.C." Thesis, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/10458.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines how the unprecedented placement of blame on social workers in B.C., following the Report of the Gove Commission into Child Protection in 1995, has affected those workers, by exploring the phenomenon from the point of view of the social workers themselves. By using structural social work theory, with a feminist perspective, the conceptual context is explored in terms of how risk and blame have been constructed and how the relationship between clients and workers, and the treatment of social workers by management have been impacted by that construction. Purposeful criterion sampling was used, applying a snowball approach of recruitment. Ten social workers participated who are or have been recently employed by the Ministry for Children & Families. Data collection occurred through one focus group session as well as individual interviews. Transcripts of the interviews were made from audiotapes. Categorical and holistic content analysis led to identification of participant themes. Findings confirmed fear of blame as a significant contributor to high stress levels but, surprisingly, social workers expressed their belief that a similar fear was frequently behind management decisions. This research provides unique insight into the factors which motivate individuals to do the difficult work of child protection. It also offers an explanation for the ongoing difficulty which government experiences in recruiting and retaining skilled, trained staff, which, if unaddressed, is a serious impediment to the effective delivery of child welfare services in B.C.
