Abstract:
The Starting School Research Project promotes the involvement of children in the research agenda. This paper explores some of the philosophical and methodological issues involved in this stance. The main focus of this paper is the voices of children reporting issues of significance to them as they start compulsory schooling, through drawings, descriptions, photographs and demonstrations.

Abstract:
There are reservations expressed by teachers in introducing courses on peace studies. Generally teachers can find no obvious place for such a study and nervous of public opinion, fear repercussions in unpredictable and anonymous ways. Historically, the study of ‘peace’ and ‘conflict resolution’ has been undertaken by military academies and defence colleges. Not surprisingly, these institutions have left the general public with a deep distrust and a suspicion that peace initiatives somehow play into the hands of real and imagined enemies. This is one of the major reasons that peace studies is such a controversial subject. Nevertheless, the consideration of peace does form part of many established courses and children are concerned about the prospects of peace and justice as this paper shows. International Year of Peace in 1986 provided the motivation for some teachers to encourage their pupils to think about peace and justice. It is particularly important for gifted pupils, as possible future leaders, to consider the implications of attitude to peace and justice.

Abstract:
AbstractUsing findings from a qualitative Swedish study on children in family law, in particular the enforcement of contact orders, the article focuses on how professionals recognise and account for children's views in such proceedings. Data include 46 court verdicts, whereof 18 files were selected for special study, and 12 interviews with professionals. Results indicate that constructions of what are the children's 'real' views; a discussion of protecting children from negative responsibility; and chronological age, can be used to subordinate children's participation in court. In cases where children's 'conditions' for contact are disregarded by the court, we argue that the children's views are invalidated, as are the possible risk for children's exposure to violence and/or abuse. The reason for involving children in decision-making in family law is consequently not only to uphold children's rights, but to promote children's protection as well.

Abstract:
AbstractChildren's universities introduce science to children at early ages, and these universities are established and spreading across the world in order to popularize science and take children into these scientific activities. In this study it was aimed to determine the effects of the children's university activities to children's views and attitudes towards scientist and science. The project lasted two weeks and included 27 activities including science, mathematics, arts, and sports. The participants were 50 students from 6th grade. The data were collected through a 21 item-scale developed by Pell and Jarvis (2001), and by "The images of the scientist" scale developed by Song and Kim (1999). The results revealed that students' attitudes to science changed statistically. Also, the images of students to scientist changed positively at the end of the activities. The findings show that the children's university activities have reached its objectives. It is believed that children's universities should be expanded and supported, which may give chance children to meet science and university at early ages. Keywords: children’s university; science school; science education; image of scientist; gifted education.

Abstract:
This article deals with the contrasting views of designers, educationalists and scientific legibility researchers concerning children’s typefaces. Guidelines about typefaces and their legibility for beginner readers remain inconclusive due to these different perspectives. The article first discusses the opinions of each of these parties on children’s typefaces. Educationalists’ views are often based on prejudices and forces of habit. Designers tend to follow the views of their potential clients and scientific legibility researchers often lack typographical knowledge for creating valid test material. To conclude, a new perspective on a need for collaboration between the different parties within typographic design research is suggested. This approach might be able not only to acquire a deeper understanding and explanation of the question which typefaces are best for children, but also for the development and design of concrete new, functional typefaces and/or guidelines.
