Hagen, Anne Marie. "Thomas Nelson & Sons and children's book publishing, 1850-1918." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/17278.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the publisher Thomas Nelson’s contribution to the juvenile publishing field in Britain in the period between 1850-1918, and studies Nelson’s development into a specialised publisher of books for children in the same period. The thesis examines the ways in which the children’s book and the juvenile publishing field developed through negotiating the demands of religious and secular education, arguing that it was through the children’s list that Nelson transitioned into a modern educational publisher. The thesis challenges assumptions that the history of children’s books is one from reading for instruction to reading solely for pleasure, thus also expanding our understanding of the types of books which were published in the “Golden Age” of children’s books. Finally, in uncovering the influence of the Nelson firm, the thesis reassesses the role of Scottish companies in British juvenile publishing. The research builds on three types of data: first and foremost information comes from the “Papers of Thomas Nelson & Sons”, a collection of the firm’s business and editorial papers. To allow comparisons with the larger publishing field and with specific publishers, data were also gathered from contemporary trade, professional, government and literary publications. Finally, the material form of selected Nelson children’s books is analysed. In chapter one, the impact that Nelson’s origin as a publisher with evangelical sympathies had on text selection and editorial methods is analysed. The reasons for the adventure tale’s dominant position on the Nelson list is the focus of chapter two, which analyses the editorial treatment of this genre and the diverse opportunities this genre afforded Nelson. Chapter three analyses the development of Nelson series, particularly the implications such diversification schemes had for the demarcations between juvenile and popular fiction. Chapter four examines the educational gift book and its relationship with Nelson’s schoolbooks, and the ways in which the conservatism and innovation of the early twentieth-century print market affected the composition of the children’s book list. The thesis concludes with a comparison of Nelson books from either end of the period studied, and uses the 1921 Newbolt Report on “The Teaching of English” to reflect on Nelson’s position in the publishing field.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to examine the tension between 'commerce and culture' in the dynamic development of the Australian children's publishing industry, within the wider context of international children's publishing history. It aims to refute a commonly stated 'truism' - that the conflict between the cultural value of a book and the need to market it threatens the integrity of the authors, publishers and the books themselves. Instead, it demonstrates that the tension between cultural and commercial definitions of the book publisher's role lies at the heart of the dynamism which has fuelled the development of a publishing climate, and created really innovative publishing. Publishing has too often been examined as if the sole motive of the publisher should be to produce books of quality, and though this is certainly the primary objective of the publishers which are the focus in this study, it is imperative to recognize that the dissemination of 'quality' literature and cultural product has always been dependent upon the recognition of commercial strategies which are often naively dismissed as being opportunistic and even extraneous to the publisher's purpose. As this thesis endeavours to show, the pioneering efforts of John Newbery, the Religious Tract Society, E.W. Cole, Ward, Lock & Co., and Australia's first publisher Angus & Robertson and of later publishers such as Penguin, Scholastic, Lothian, Omnibus, Allen & Unwin and others, were founded just as much upon the shrewd recognition of a viable market as they were upon the aim to enrich young readers' lives. In fact it is the symbiotic partnership between these two objectives which has fuelled their successes and their failures. It is where publishers either steer a path paved only with good intentions or one paved entirely with gold that their enterprises generally falter. The study owes a significant debt to the achievements of those who have documented Australian children's publishing 'output' so assiduously - Maurice Saxby's groundbreaking histories (1969, 1971, 1993) and Marcie Muir and Kerry White's comprehensive bibliographical tools (1982, 1992). Contrary to those endeavours, though, this study'goes back-stage' to the area where the publishing 'action' happens. Consequently it does not provide a comprehensive overview of every publication or author; it does not cover every genre and style. Rather it is concerned to document the activities of publishers which have produced books for children in Australia, in brief, and to isolate key examples of publishing enterprises within this coverage which represent 'case studies' of the different types of companies which have played a successful part in publishing development. This work is intended to be of interest not simply to either children's literature or Australian literature theorists, but to book historians, and to media, cultural studies and entertainment industry theorists. It was based on a belief that cultural histories of this nature are valuable in tracking the growth of a society and also in demonstrating that creative endeavours are never simply that. They are the result of a complex interweaving of a variety of factors, and that therefore artists approach creativity 'at their peril' without first understanding something of the world into which they are entrusting their creations. Consequently there were several objectives in the study which were to: 1. contextualize Australian children's publishing within a history of children's publishing internationally, with particular reference to early commercial beginnings in Britain and to British Empire developments, but also with appropriate reference to growth in the USA; 2. contextualize Australian children's publishing within the broader range and expansion of the book publishing industry in Australia, particularly the latter's economic growth and cultural influence since WWII, but also including an overview of foundational developments from the nineteenth century; 3. contextualize Australian children's publishing within social, educational and cultural developments, such as the development of education programs, the expansion of public and school libraries, the changes in government policy related to children and books, shifting social attitudes towards the child, and the impact of entertainment and media industries; 4. examine the roles played by various individuals, especially publishers, managers, editors, marketers, booksellers, librarians, teachers and professional commentators in the development of the Australian children's publishing industry. Their roles will be analysed in the context of various industry-particular questions such as a) the oft-remarked upon tensions that exist in publishing, between for example, 'craft-like' and bureaucratic structures; b) the interplay between 'structure and agency' in the industry; c) the shift from a 'library market' to a 'mass market' under such influences as globalization and media; d) whether publishing is necessarily more 'Australian' if it is done by independent, rather than multinational companies; and e) the influence that the 'internal' structure of publishing has had on its development, e.g. the isolation of children's publishing from the mainstream, the predominance of women as agents in its development, and so on; 5. finally, discuss the implications of globalization since the 1970s, and posit future directions in the production, marketing and consumption of children's properties. This study examines the industry from a critical perspective relying not on the evaluation of quality as opposed to mass market literature, but viewing all forms of trade literature for children as part of a dynamic whole. It therefore traces the origins of publishing in English-language countries briefly first before examining the Australian situation, and shows that from the very beginning, publications for children have been the products of both altruistic and profit-driven objectives. It concentrates on the post-WWII period, on certain key enterprises and trends which have been particularly successful, suggesting that those publishing houses and those individuals within them who 'balance' commerce and culture with the most skill, are those who succeed in making 'good' books readily accessible to those for whom they have been created. This thesis celebrates the fact that children's publishers have always demonstrated an admirable combination of opportunism and idealism, the two characteristics which are essential to a successful publishing company. Australia has been fortunate in rearing several enterprising individuals whose early publishing attempts laid the ground for the currently successful houses. Without E.W. Cole, William Steele at Ward, Lock and Co., Frank Eyre at Oxford University Press, Andrew Fabinyi at Cheshire, Barbara Ker Wilson at Angus & Robertson, Anne Bower Ingram at William Collins, the later successes of key individuals at Penguin Books Australia, Scholastic Australia, Allen & Unwin, Lothian Books and Omnibus Books and countless others may not have been planted in such fertile ground. This study predicts that the future of Australian children's publishing lies in the recognition of the essential role played by commercial instincts in shaping cultural endeavours.

Abstract:
The portrayals of mothers and fathers in children's literature as companions, disciplinarians, caregivers, nurturers, and providers were documented in this research. The impact of time of publication, sex of author, award-winning status of book, best-selling status of book, race of characters, and sex of characters upon each of the five parental roles was assessed using descriptive statistics, cross-tabulation, and multinomial logistic regression techniques. A survey instrument developed for this study was completed for each of the 300 books randomly selected from the list of easy/picture books in the Children's Catalog (H.W. Wilson Company, 2001). To ensure all time periods were represented, the list was stratified by decades before sampling. It was expected that parental role portrayals would become more egalitarian and less traditional in each successive time period of publication. Male authors were expected to portray more egalitarian parental roles, and the race and sex of the young characters were not expected to influence parental portrayals. Award-winning books were expected to represent more egalitarian parental roles. Books that achieved the Publisher's Weekly all-time best-selling status were expected to portray parents in less egalitarian roles. Secondary analyses explored the prevalence of mothers' occupations, parental incompetence, and dangerous, solo child adventures. While the time of publication affected role portrayals, the evidence was unclear as to whether the changing roles represented greater egalitarianism. The race and the sex of the young characters significantly affected parental role portrayals, but the sex of the author did not influence these portrayals. While award winning and bestselling texts portrayed parents differently than books that did not achieve such honors, most did not provide enough information to adequately assess parenting roles. Half of the mothers who worked in the texts worked in conjunction with their husbands rather than independent of them. Over 10 % of mothers and fathers acted incompetently. The time of publication and the sex of the author was associated with the prevalence of solo, dangerous, child adventures. Subsequent implications and recommendations suggest the inclusion of stronger parental characters in children's books. Many of the parents are portrayed as inactive, incompetent, or neglectful. The concern is that children are exposed to these picture book portrayals during the primary years of identity acquisition.

Ry-Kottoh, Lucy Afeafa. "Digital publishing in Ghana : a focus on children's e-books." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/26842.

Full text
Abstract:
Adopting a mixed methods approach consisting of interviews, focus group discussions and surveys, this thesis investigates the state of digital publishing in Ghana within the context of Rogers’ diffusion of innovation theory. With a focus on children’s ebooks, it examines publishers’, authors’ and readers’ levels of adoption of ebooks, and their motivations for, perceptions of, and challenges or barriers to, going digital or otherwise. It also assesses the state of digital infrastructure and human resource capacity in Ghana to support the growing ebook sector, and identifies the knowledge and skills deficit in the industry in order to inform the development of courses that will be incorporated into the BA Publishing Studies programme at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). This thesis reveals that the level of adoption of ebook publishing among publishers and authors was relatively low given the interest demonstrated by young readers. The latter were very interested in ebooks and read mainly foreign content because it was freely available and accessible online. Publishers’ and authors’ motivations for publishing ebooks include visibility, the opportunity to reach a much wider audience, and the novelty of publishing digitally to keep abreast of current trends so as to transform the local industry. Some barriers to adoption identified were the cost associated with acquiring infrastructure, the security of online content, inadequate information about ebooks, non-use of ebooks, and infrastructural challenges such as inconsistent electricity supply and poor Internet penetration. The thesis also identified an awareness disconnect between publishers and their local readers: publishers perceive ebooks to be for the international market and, as such, do not focus on promoting them in the local market; thus, local readers are not aware of the existence of ebooks. Expanding on Rogers’ adoption categories, two new categories were created, incidental adopters and perceptual late adopters, to accommodate individuals who do not fall within Rogers’ established adopter categories. To increase the spread of digital publishing and the uptake of ebooks in the Ghanaian book market, the thesis recommends the elimination of the barriers to adoption and, most importantly, advocates training and skills development to reduce the knowledge and skills deficit gap among publishers and authors.

Kreidieh, Shereen. "The publishing and marketing of Lebanese children's books in the Arab World." Thesis, Oxford Brookes University, 2015. https://radar.brookes.ac.uk/radar/items/d31319e4-fb3e-4429-b9c4-bb399eee5c45/1.

Abstract:
The core question this research seeks to answer is: how and why do the publishing and marketing of children’s books in the Arabic-speaking World differ fundamentally from publishing and marketing in larger western children’s books markets? In 2003, the Arab Human Development Report concluded that the Arab book is a “threatened species” (Rogan, 2004). A decade later, this assessment still resonates with Arab book publishers. Sophisticated marketing techniques are still conspicuously absent from the Arabic book publishing industry, and in need of further development. Marketing and market research drives publishing in the West, and advocates the love of books to customers (Squires, 2009, pp. 40-69), (Baverstock, 2008, p: 1), (Bogucki, 2012), (Blythe, 2009, pp. 6-8) while publishing in the Arab World is driven by different priorities. To understand marketing Lebanese children’s literature, given that Lebanon is regarded as the Arab World’s publishing capital exporting 90% of its books, the research employs both qualitative and quantitative methods to collect data, provide a socio-cultural appreciation of the publishing industry, and address the factors affecting book development, customers, and markets. Publishing exists within a framework of influential factors shaping the industry, including legacy publishing houses and family-run publishing houses, mistrust between the different stakeholders in the book chain, and the socio-economic situation in Lebanon and across the Arabic-speaking World. An overview of the Lebanese children’s book publishing houses reflects the traditional methods used to publish and market Lebanese children’s books. Particular attention is given to the crucial role played by book fairs as the key sales channels across the region. A series of surveys demonstrates the importance of picture books for advancing literacy and language capacity among elementary school children as well as creating a love of the Arabic language. The uniqueness of Arab markets is demonstrated when marketing methods used in the UK are applied to the Lebanese market, with variable results. The research highlights the need to further develop marketing mechanisms for Lebanese children’s literature and the need for greater comparative publishing research in the Arabic-speaking World. The research adds to the body of knowledge on Arabic Children’s book, drawing a clear picture of the publishing and marketing of children’s books in Lebanon and across the Arabic-speaking World, offering practical ideas for other Lebanese publishers to work on, and introducing a combination of new methods to understand different players in the book chain process.

Abstract:
In my Degree Project I developed a case study of two independent publishers that promote children’s literature with a special focus on diversity and challenging gender stereotypes, situating them within the bigger framework of activism for gender equality and against homophobia in Italy. I looked at the potential of children’s literature as a significant instrument of communication for social change and analysed the publishers’ activities as a form of activism, specifically connected with the sphere of education. I narrow my analysis to two publishers: Lo Stampatello, specialising in children’s literature against gender stereotypes and homophobia, and Settenove, specialising in the theme of gender equality. I analysed first a selection of texts from these publishers and then some of their diffusion practices, through which they engage with other entities dealing with gender equality and LGBT rights. I see these publishers as self-aware agents of change, that produce messages about equality, deliberately diffused into the public and specifically targeting an audience of children, parents, teachers and educators, and that play an active role in the scenario of contentious politics [Tilly and Tarrow, 2007].

Abstract:
In this thesis the goal is to understand and explain the mutual reliance between the evolution of the way editors classified children’s books and the creation of an autonomous and integrated editorial subfield which have a major role in the process of legitimating children literature. In this study I will work on two countries – France and Spain – to reestablish the evolution of the children’s book publishing from both a national and transnational perspectives. I will study the systems used to classify children’s books in two national subfiels and two linguistic areas. This research will offer a historical sociology of culture approach and a sociology of classification approach. This analysis will be comparative, entangled and transnational. It will focus on the logics and the strategies of the children’s book publishers to impose categories that would spread inside – and beyond – nation-states, taking into account their space of possibles as much inside the publishing house as on the publishing market. I am going to analyse the classification systems to better understand the cultural and editorial markets. I will also study the origin of the children’s book representations and social practices. I will try to understand the interaction of symbolic and economic strategies that are built on a social construction around the value of a product

Resumo: No Brasil, inúmeras pesquisas estudam obras portuguesas destinadas ao público infantil,as quais tiveram ampla circulação no país no século XIX e primeiras décadas do século XX.
Abstract: In Brazil there are several researches on Portuguese works devoted to children. These works were widely diffused during the 19th century and in the early decades of the 20th century. But there are few studies about the diffusion of Portuguese children's Literature in the 21st century. This subject is spread in different places to look for them or to study them. This fact can cause some trouble to researchers in this area of knowledge when they want to identify Portuguese authors in the area of Portuguese speakers output. In such case, this dissertation intends to contribute not only to survey and to understand this area of investigation within its history but it also aims to enlarge the conception and the relation between children's Literature and the market where it is published. When we discuss data and compare them with other information that was concluded by this research, it is possible to point out some factors that are changing the scenery of children's Literature output. This fact has recently stimulated its diffusion and has solidified the presence of this Literature in Brazilian market. In this research we registered and investigated Portuguese books for children and youths that were available in a great Brazilian bookstore from August 2010 to December 2011. We observed the relation between the amount of available titles as well as Brazilian and Portuguese publishing companies where the books were printed and we observed the relations between the books, the authors, the illustrators and the period when the books were printed. We also tried to know and to realize the preferences, the duration or interruption of the productive trajectory of this Literature which is mediated by questions related to education, market, celebrations and stimulation of the sector. We also tried to exam some of the most important Portuguese books outputs for children and youths in Brazilian media. We localized one hundred and twenty-eight available books written or drawn by Portuguese writers or illustrators. All these books are dedicated to children and youths. The books were published by twenty-six publishing companies. Sixty-one books were published in Brazil by seventeen Brazilian publishing companies. Sixty-seven books were imported and they were published by nine Portuguese publishing companies. The books were written by fifty-two authors or co-authors. Forty-six authors are Portuguese. Among sixty-three illustrators we have twenty-five Portuguese artists. The theoretical and methodological perspective is based on studies of Cultural History (Chartier, 1999, 1996), on the researches on the State of Art (Ferreira, 1999) and researchers into Portuguese Children's Literature especially Barreto (2002, 1998), Rocha (2011) and Ferreira (2008).

Abstract The popularity of mobile devices in recent years makes people get used to digital worlds and hence draws publishing related corporations into digital markets. Digital publications start to dominate consumers' behaviors, lifestyles and reading habits. Since the invention of writing, e-books not only introduce a more versatile communication but also cause traditional publishing to fade. However the impact on children's book publishing industry is not as severe as on conventional ones. Children's books pursue visual stimulation. The new technologies of internet and multimedia lead children's book publishing industry into another new era. This study focuses on respondents who prepare for the digital transformation of children's books and explores the key requirements of core competencies and relational knowledge. The core competencies include market-access competence, integrity-related competence and functionality-related competence. The relational knowledge is environmental, interactional and functional. These factors construct the key elements to successful transformation. Based on them, we categorize the crisis and turnaround that traditional publishing industries would deal with during the progress. The difficulties of the transformation are gathered and discussed in detail. The research suggests that children's book industries in Taiwan are capable of mastering interactional and environmental knowledge. It makes enterprises highly keep up with the market needs. On the other side, companies in Taiwan show weaker abilities to differentiate their products and services as well as the functional knowledge. They are more conservative in marketing which reflects the deficiency in creating business value out of cross-industry integration. The aim of this diploma thesis is to describe the uniqueness of the Baobab publishing house books for pre-school children and to find out what is the opinion of parents and pre- school teachers on selected books from this publishing house, on their content and on their graphic design. In the theoretical part I describe and explain the basic concepts of the reading literacy. I also devote to the contemporary situation in the book market for children, especially pre- school children, mostly non-readers. I focus on a small alternative publishing house called Baobab, its book production for children in general, and on its awarded books. In the empirical part I interviewed parents (41 returned questionnaires altogether) about their awareness and opinion on the Baobab publishing house and on selected books published by Baobab, namely Jak zvířataspí (How Animals Sleep), Šmalcova ABECEDA (Šmalec's Alphabet) and Z domu a zahrady (From the House And the Garden). I also interviewed 7 pre- school teachers to find out about their awareness of the Baobab publishing house and about their opinion on the selected books. Unlike the parents, all teachers had known the publishing house. It was proved that although the publishing house was awarded several prizes for its children's books (especially for the graphic design), the...

Taiwanese children’s literature has become much more popular and diversified in recent years. For this reason, this thesis intends to present the transformations of the Taiwanese children’s literature through historical source analysis and in-depth interviews. Established in 1945, right after the Japanese colonial period, the Eastern Publishing Company is the first children’s book publishing company in Taiwan. It has been dedicated to enhancing the children’s language education and opening the door to literature for children. In the analysis of the two monthly magazines, Eastern Youth(東方少年)and Study Friend(學友), it is shown that the foundation stone of the Taiwanese children’s literature was laid by such writers as Chen Ciou-fan(陳秋帆), Hong Yan-ciou(洪炎秋), Huang Shih-de(黃得時), Yang Yun-ping(楊雲萍), Ma Sha-ou(馬沙鷗), Lin Yu-shan(林玉山), Lin Sian-mo(林顯模), Wang Shih-lang(王詩琅), and Syue Syue-guei(薛學規). They all played a vital part in the development of the Taiwanese children’s literature, providing abundant “food for thought” for children. In addition, this thesis analyzes the series books published by the Eastern Publishing Company. It is concluded that there are five phases in its development, each of which has different characteristics. For example, in the foundation phase, such best-sellers as Great People of the World(世界偉人傳記叢書)came off the press. In the transition phase, the publisher not merely started to issue localized science books and picture books, but it also introduced and translated foreign award-winning books, enabling young readers to cultivate a global and diverse world view. All in all, this thesis aims to outline the development and historical orientation of the Eastern Publishing Company. However, in the process it is no easy task to collect complete sources, for a number of documents have been lost, destroyed, or disposed of. Therefore, it is expected that the publisher can cooperate with the academic institutions, striving to preserve these valuable sources.

Abstract:
This research seeks to understand children’s book place in the Portuguese written press. In the last two decades we have witnessed the development of a new concept of a book for children, not separable from the changing concepts of child and childhood. Starting from the study of two concrete cases of the written press, with different periodicities and public targets, a collection and analysis of the contents produced on the children's book was made, seeking, in a second stage, to understand how the worlds of those who write and those who produce and try to publicize the book relate and diverge. What sort of filters and frameworks dominates the press, and how do publishers react and adapt trying to gain space and visibility. We try to ascertain, in view of the variety and quantity of children's books available, some suggesting reading as leisure, but also reading as a school and curricular activity, which perspective prevails in the press. If critical, if devoid of interest in the construction of new readers, if aware of its potential on the building of future readers.

Abstract:
The following project seeks to describe the steps involved in the construction of a children's collection, based on the work Conto em casa, published by Editora Raiz in November 2020. It also aims at examining the importance of publishing current and sensitive themes for children, in order to fulfill the pedagogical, social, psychological, and artistic requirements – responsibility inherent to the profession of an editor – in a period of confinement and social isolation due to the new corona virus pandemic. Thus, the present work aims to expose both the stages and the editorial dynamics that involve the decisions made by an editor in the process of producing a book. It seeks to contribute to the publishing market by highlighting the relationship of a publisher with other publishing agents, when the physical release is no longer possible in times of pandemic, and digital actions need to be redefined in order to reach the public, sales, and especially to encourage reading.
