Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Chinese medicinal herbs Radix Isatidis and Viola yedoensis Makino have been suggested to possess antiviral activity. This study tests whether these and other Chinese and Western herbal medicinal formulas can modulate the immune functions involving virus-suppression in BALB/c mouse. We first confirmed the extract from Viola yedoensis Makino, but not from Radix Isatidis, the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula Chui-Uren-Chien (CUC), or a Western homeopathic medicinal drink Método Canova, could inhibit the replications of herpes simplex virus-1 and enterovirus 71 in the human neuroblastoma SK-N-SH cell line. Subsequently, the same herbal extracts and drink underwent toxicity and immunomodulatory tests on mice of 5–7 weeks old. After 8 weeks of feeding different herbal medicinal formulas, no hepatic or renal toxicity was noted in any tested animal; whereas among the immune function evaluations, only the mice treated with CUC extract were found to be associated with significant increases (p < 0.05) in both the level of plasma IgG and the percentage of monocyte in blood mononuclear cells as well as the activation of macrophage Raw264.7 cells for nitric oxide production, suggesting its role in modulating the non-specific immune response. Analyses using protein arrays showed CUC was the most potent herbal medicinal formula eliciting fluctuations in plasma cytokine and chemokine concentrations. Taking all experimental data together, we conclude Chui-Uren-Chien possesses immunomodulatory capability in mouse, but none of the herbal medicinal formulas tested here are involved in strengthening antiviral immunity.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Searches for parity violation in hadronic systems started soon after the evidence for parity violation in β-decay of 60 Co was presented by Madame Chien-Shiung Wu and in π and μ decay by Leon Lederman in 1957. The early searches for parity violation in hadronic systems did not reach the sensitivity required and only after technological advances in later years was parity violation unambiguously established. Within the meson-exchange description of the strong interaction, theory and experiment meet in a set of seven weak meson-nucleon coupling constants. Even today, after almost five decades, the determination of the seven weak meson-nucleon couplings is incomplete. Parity violation in nuclear systems is rather complex due to the intricacies of QCD. More straight forward in terms of interpretation are measurements of the proton-proton parity-violating analyzing power (normalized differences in scattering yields for positive and negative helicity incident beams), for which there exist three precision experiments (at 13.6, at 45, and 221 MeV). To-date, there are better possibilities for theoretical interpretation using effective field theory approaches. The situation with regard to the measurement of the parity-violating analyzing power or asymmetry in polarized electron scattering is quite different. Although the original measurements were intended to determine the electro-weak mixing angle, with the current knowledge of the electro-weak interaction and the great precision with which electro-weak radiative corrections can be calculated, the emphasis has been to study the structure of the nucleon, and in particular the strangeness content of the nucleon. A whole series of experiments (the SAMPLE experiment at MIT-Bates, the G0 experiment and HAPPEX experiments at Jefferson Laboratory (JLab), and the PVA4 experiment at MAMI) have indicated that the strange quark contributions to the charge and magnetization distributions of the nucleon are tiny. These measurements if extrapolated to zero degrees and zero momentum transfer have also provided a factor five improvement in the knowledge of the neutral weak couplings to the quarks. Choosing appropriate kinematics in parity-violating electron-proton scattering permits nucleon structure effects on the measured analyzing power to be precisely controlled. Consequently, a precise measurement of the ‘running’ of sin 2θw or the electro-weak mixing angle has become within reach. The [Formula: see text] experiment at Jefferson Laboratory is to measure this quantity to a precision of about 4%. This will either establish conformity with the Standard Model of quarks and leptons or point to New Physics as the Standard Model must be encompassed in a more general theory required, for instance, by a convergence of the three couplings (strong, electromagnetic, and weak) to a common value at the GUT scale. The upgrade of CEBAF at Jefferson Laboratory to 12 GeV, will allow a new measurement of sin 2θW in parity-violating electron-electron scattering with an improved precision to the current better measurement (the SLAC E158 experiment) of the ‘running’ of sin 2θW away from the Z0 pole. Preliminary design studies of such an experiment show that a precision comparable to the most precise individual measurements at the Z0 pole (to about ±0.00025) can be reached. The result of this experiment will be rather complementary to the [Formula: see text] experiment in terms of sensitivity to New Physics.

Abstract:
Background and Purpose. To improve the utility of the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), the aim of this study was to develop a short form of the BBS (SFBBS) that was psychometrically similar (including test reliability, validity, and responsiveness) to the original BBS for people with stroke. Subjects and Methods. A total of 226 subjects with stroke participated in this prospective study at 14 days after their stroke; 167 of these subjects also were examined at 90 days after their stroke. The BBS, Barthel Index, and Fugl-Meyer Motor Test were administered at these 2 time points. By reducing the number of tested items by more than half the number of items in the original BBS (ie, making 4-, 5-, 6-, and 7-item tests) and simplifying the scoring system of the original BBS (ie, collapsing the 5-level scale into a 3-level scale [BBS-3P]), we generated a total of 8 SFBBSs. Results. The distributions of scores for all 8 SFBBSs were acceptable but featured notable floor effects. The 4-item BBS, 5-item BBS, 5-item BBS-3P, and 7-item BBS-3P demonstrated good reliability. The subjects’ scores on the 6-item BBS, 6-item BBS-3P, 7-item BBS, and 7-item BBS-3P showed excellent agreement with those on the original BBS. The 6-item BBS-3P and 7-item BBS-3P exhibited great responsiveness. Only the 7-item BBS-3P demonstrated both satisfactory and psychometric properties similar to those of the original BBS. Discussion and Conclusion. The 7-item BBS-3P was found to be psychometrically similar to the original BBS. The 7-item BBS-3P, compared with the original BBS, is simpler and faster to complete in either a clinical or a research setting and is recommended. [Chou CY, Chien CW, Hsueh IP, et al. Abstract:
Abstract Background Respiratory viruses are readily detectable in hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) recipients in the molecular diagnostic era. The association of respiratory virus infections with acute and chronic airflow obstruction (AFO) is poorly defined. Methods HCT recipients were prospectively followed with weekly handheld spirometry and symptom questionnaires through 1 year after HCT. Weekly multiplex PCR testing for 11 respiratory viruses was performed through day 100 post-HCT and every 3 months and with respiratory symptoms thereafter. Standard pulmonary function testing occurred at recommended intervals. Cox proportional hazard models were used to correlate longitudinal symptomatic respiratory tract viral infections with AFO phenotypes, defined as 2- or 4-week decline (↓) of 1 second forced expiratory volume (FEV1) >10% by handheld spirometry; late AFO (FEV1/forced vital capacity [FVC] < lower limit normal predicted and FEV1 decline >10% from baseline at 3 years; or bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS; FEV1 <75%, FEV1/FVC < 0.7, and FEV1 ↓ >10% from baseline) by 3 years after HCT; late AFO and BOS were assessed by standard pulmonary function testing. Results Overall, 7,091 PCR tests were performed in 471 patients; 70% of patients had ≥1 respiratory virus detected. Among 437 patients who survived >4 weeks, decline of FEV-1 for 2 or 4 weeks, late AFO or BOS occurred in 11.9%, 7.1%, 15.6%, and 3.9%, respectively. In adjusted Cox models, human metapneumovirus (HMPV), influenza virus A/B, and parainfluenza virus 1–4 (PIV) upper tract infections (URI) were associated with 2 and 4 weeks FEV-1 decline (Figure 1). Late AFO and BOS were only significantly associated with RSV- or HMPV-related URI (Figure 2). Lower respiratory disease (LRD) due to HMPV (adjusted HR 11.1, P = 0.02) was associated with a 2- and 4-week FEV-1 decline. Conclusion Development of AFO after HCT is common. Respiratory viruses are significantly associated with both short-term airflow decline and long-term airflow obstruction. Interventional strategies that target multiple viruses are warranted. Abstract:
In the bitch, the periovulatory period is characterized by the luteinization of preovulatory follicles, causing a significant increase in progesterone (P4) concentrations in the blood, the follicular fluid and probably the oviductal fluid. Moreover, at ovulation, the oocytes are released at an immature stage and the key events such as oocyte meiotic resumption, fertilization and early embryonic development take place within the oviducts. The aim of this PhD work was to improve our understanding of the targets and roles of P4 during the periovulatory period in the bitch. At first, the expression of nuclear (PR) and membrane (PGRMC1, PGRMC2, mPRa, mPRβ, mPRy) P4 receptors was studied in the oviduct and oocyte cumulus complexes around ovulation. The results demonstrated a tissue- and stage-dependant variation in the expression of these receptors in the canine oviduct and cumulus cells. Interestingly, some of these variations coincide with the oocyte meiotic resumption and fertilization. In the second study, aglepristone, a nuclear receptor antagonist, was administered to study the roles of P4 during the periovulatory period in the bitch. Aglepristone neither affected plasma P4 levels nor the ovulation rate. However, it severely delayed oocyte meiotic resumption and impaired sperm progression toward the oviduct, preventing fertilization. These results points to the important roles played by P4 around ovulation in the bitch. The mechanisms of P4 action in these processes remain to be explored

Abstract:
Kinetics of dog locomotion is based on the measure of forces generated during stance. This is a real functional test for the locomotor system. It enables the dynamic analysis of lameness. The clinical efficacy of medical or surgical treatment might be quantified. Using an instrumented treadmill is an original approach. Locomotion on treadmill is different from locomotion on ground, but biomechanical analysis is possible. The aim of this study is to validate a kinetic test for lameness assessment. The feasibility and repeatability have been established with 10 dogs analysed on 3 consecutives days. Before performing analysis, a single training session was demonstrated to be necessary with 28 sound dogs then 12 lame dogs, studied once a week, 4 weeks in succession. The needed sample size to detect a treatment effect has been estimated. Load decrease has been observed for the lame limb. The accuracy of symmetry calculation to identify lame subject has been assessed with 36 sound dogs and 13 hind limb-lame dogs. High sensitivity and specificity were provided with a multivariate combination. This test made it possible to reliably establish the soundness of the locomotor system. Compared to classic protocols with in-ground force plates, the higher repeatability, the fast and easy data collection, the reliability of lameness assessment confirm the value of this kinetic test on a treadmill

Dog bears a plasticity that can’t be matched up by the other mammals. Despite a commun wolf origin canine breeds very diverse and different as far as phenotype is concerned. This diversity has a lot of veterinary medicine consequences : the many racial predispositions and particularities must be taken into account by the practitioner. Many of the diseases acknowledged as hereditary are yet genetically unknown. It’s to explore those affections mecanisms that genetic such as maps and dog genome sequence have rised this last years. Those tools allowed molecular bases identification of many affections such as narcolepsia in Doberman and in labrador, copper toxicosis in Bedlington Terrier

Abstract:
The first part of the thesis presents new statistical methods to find words with unexpected frequencies in DNA sequences. The main contribution of this work is to take the sequence heterogeneity into account when assessing the exceptionality of a word. For this, we propose several compound poisson approximations for the count of a rare word in a Markovian heterogeneous model, with a fixed or a random heterogeneity. We also propose methods to test simultaneously the exceptionality of several motifs. This leads to the second part of the thesis, in which we consider the general statistical problem of testing simultaneously a given set of null hypotheses. First, we introduce a "set-ouput" point of view on multiple testing procedures, which gives short proofs for existing false discovery rate (FDR) control results. Second, new procedures are investigated, as adaptive procedures or resampling-based procedures. The latter are derived from general confidence regions and provide a non-asymptotic control of the family-wise error rate (FWER)

Abstract:
The basic theme of this dissertation is to understand a large collection of Taoist ritual texts from Sichuan, Guangcheng yizhi, first compiled in the 18th century and forming the basis of a living local ritual tradition. The dissertation uses both the historical approach (looking at the history of compiling, printing and using the collection) and fieldwork. The first two chapters introduce the history of Taoism in Sichuan since the Qing dynasty, and of the Guangcheng texts in particular. Then it explores the Guangcheng tradition developing notions such as “Guangcheng Taoist”, and the structure and typology of rituals. It analyses the building of a grand ritual and its “rundown” made of many smaller rites; this sheds light on the mental map of Taoists as they appropriate the shared ritual repertoire of their tradition. Finally chapter 6 analyses the ritual of repayment of life debt (huanshousheng) in the Guangcheng tradition

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter tells the story of how the Election Commission of India (ECI) became one of the most awe-inspiring electoral regulatory bodies in the world. One of the most widely celebrated and trusted public institutions in India, it has ensured the integrity—free and fair—of 17 national and more than 370 state elections since 1947, in what is not only the most populous but also one of the most potentially fractious democracies in the world. Ever under pressure from the executive branch and governing parties to bow to demands fed by their desire for electoral windfalls, the ECI managed to strengthen its autonomy through assertive leadership by a series of Chief Electoral Commissioners following the decline of the Congress Party’s political dominance. The rise of the Hindu Nationalist BJP as the new dominant force in Indian politics provides a crucial test for the endurance of the ECI’s role as India’s guardian of electoral integrity.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the phenomenon of mobs discriminating in the name of Zulu in 2008. In June 2008, a wave of xenophobic attacks against migrants and foreigners that began in Gauteng spread across Johannesburg. Mobs were forcing people to take “tests” to establish their nationality. A language test is first, where one is asked to label certain body parts in isiZulu. These Zulu language “tests” were compared to the “pencil test,” once used by apartheid government officials to help them refine racial classifications. The chapter considers how ownership of a language like Zulu is being asserted in pursuit of an exclusive right to ownership of property and opportunity. It argues that Zulu is the language of xenophobia, used to discriminate against, and to deprive. It also comments on the Chief of The Point, a satirical persona adopted by Volovolo Memela in his newspaper column, “Ngeso likaVolovolo.”

Abstract:
The study looks at Economic growth and environmental pollution: an assessment of the Environmental Kuznets Curve in Brazil from 1990 to 2018. The ADF-Fisher, PP-Fisher, Im Pesaran, and Chin unit root tests checked stationarity. The VAR model was used to check the influence of individual endogenous variables, and the Wald test was used to determine the variables’ combined impact. The researchers used the Pairwise Dumitrescu Hurlin panel causality (PDHPC) and Pairwise Granger causality tests to assess all of the hypotheses. At order one, the variables are integrated. The lag order used for further calculations is the Akaike Information Criterion. The Fisher cointegration test revealed the cointegration according to the individual cross-section result. According to the Pairwise Dumitrescu Hurlin panel causality (PDHPC) and Pairwise Granger causality tests, economic growth and carbon dioxide emissions are bidirectional. Both the PDHPC and the PGCT support the environmental Kuznets curve theory. Because the EKC hypothesis exists in Brazil, the study concluded that both pure and filthy productions coincide. When Brazil reaches a particular level of development, however, its population may seek a healthier environment, and governments in these countries may pass stricter environmental regulations to encourage cleaner industry. When followed, the procedures may help to improve environmental quality.

Abstract:
An implicit procedure based on the artificial compressibility formulation is presented for the numerical solution of the two-dimensional incompressible steady Navier-Stokes equations in the presence of large separated regions. Turbulence effects are accounted for by the Chien low Reynolds number form of the K-ε turbulence model and the Baldwin-Lomax algebraic expression for turbulent viscosity. The governing equations are written in conservative form and implicitly solved in fully coupled form using the approximate factorization technique. Preliminary tests were carried out in a laminar flow regime to check the accuracy and stability of the method in two-dimensional and cylindrical axisymmetric flow configurations. After testing in laminar and turbulent flow regimes and comparing the two turbulence models, the code was successfully applied to an actual gas turbine diffuser at low Mach numbers.

Abstract:
Scarce experimental verification exits in the open literature concerning determination of the shakedown boundary for pipe bends subjected to steady internal pressure and cyclic bending loading. The objective of the present paper is to test the capability of a simplified technique presented by the authors in recent ASME JPVT publications and PVP conferences [1–4] in adequately predicting the shakedown boundary obtained through experimental testing. Recently, Chen et al. [5] published experimental and finite element (FE) simulation results on ratchetting of low-carbon steel pressurized 90-degree pipe bend specimens subjected to cyclic reversed in-plane bending forces. Chen et al. [5] performed experimental testing on a pipe bend specimen subjected to a steady internal pressure magnitude of 20.0 MPa. Through FE simulations employing a modified form of the Ohno-Wang non-linear kinematic hardening (KH) rule, Chen et al. [5] predicted a shakedown boundary for a steady internal pressure spectrum ranging from 10.0 to 25.0 MPa. Chen et al. [5] experimental and FE outcomes are utilized for comparison with the simplified technique outcomes. The simplified technique outcomes showed very good correlation with Chen et al. [5] shakedown boundary predictions for the 18.0 – 25.0 MPa steady internal pressure spectrum. On the contrary, noticeable disagreement was found for the lower magnitudes of steady internal pressure. Reasons behind the discrepancy are discussed.

In ASME 2020 39th International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/omae2020-19335.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Fatigue damage estimation is a key part in a Steel Catenary Riser (SCR) system design. The riser-soil interaction has a significant influence on the fatigue assessment for a SCR system at the Touch-Down Zone (TDZ) because the soil’s vertical stiffness is a critical parameter. The conventional methods developed to calculate the soil’s vertical stiffness, for example, DNV method [10], Bridge method [4] and Audibert method [3], were based on the assumption that at the TDZ area the soil mass being interacted by the pipe is always under intact condition. Recently, Chen et al. published a newly developed method [5, 6], which was based on the laboratory test results carried out by Texas A&M University in the late 1980s and was further verified by recent laboratory displacement-controlled tests by Texas A&M University [2], resulting in softer soil’s vertical stiffness. In order to understand the difference between Chen method and the conventional methods as well as the influence of Chen method on the SCR design, a study was carried out for a given soil condition and three typical sizes of riser pipes and is documented in this paper. In this paper, firstly, various methods used to calculate soil’s vertical stiffness, i.e., DNV method, Bridge method, Audibert method, and Chen method, were briefly introduced. Secondly, a discussion was performed on the model of the conventional methods and the model of Chen method. Thirdly, as an example for a given soil condition, the soil’s vertical stiffness was estimated using these methods respectively for 6″-dia., 12″-dia., and 18″-dia. riser pipes. Finally, the fatigue damages for various riser pipes were computed using the estimated soil’s vertical stiffness and a comparison on the estimated fatigue damages was performed. The study results showed that the soil’s vertical stiffness estimated by Chen method was about one order magnitude weaker than these estimated by the conventional methods. In other words, the soil’s vertical stiffness estimated by the conventional methods was about 5 to 11 times that estimated by Chen method. The pipe’s fatigue life estimated using the soil’s vertical stiffness of Chen method was about 1.5 times (i.e., 50% longer than) that estimated using the soil’s vertical stiffness of the conventional methods. These study results could improve a SCRs designer’s understanding on: 1) the difference between the model of the conventional methods and the model of Chen method, 2) the impact of Chen method on the estimated fatigue life, and 3) that as the model of the conventional methods is a closer representative of the prototype and their results are more conservative, it is recommended to use the conventional methods for SCRs design. Eventually, these will help the designers to select an appropriate method for calculating the soil’s vertical stiffness in the SCRs design.

The Gabor model has also been proposed to describe such physiological data. Although tests of all three models have previously been made for neural 1-D spatial frequency tuning curves,1 I now report preliminary tests on recent 2-D cortical visual receptive field data measured directly in the spatial domain.2 I also report on the effects of the temporal dimension on the fits of these models. Abstract:
The sustainable design of small passenger vessels and large size pleasure craft indicates new trends: lower speed, reduced fuel consumption and better seakeeping in all range of velocities. Small amplitudes of roll motion are considered one of the most important comfort parameter. These trends call for reviewing some commonly used concepts and designer practice. Fundamental parameters as metacentric height and midsection form affect comfort as well as ship safety in counteracting way. Round bilge, due to good seakeeping characteristics and to large amount of available data from systematic series is the most common hull form choice when cruising speed implies displacement or semi displacement mode. Hard chine hull forms are generally chosen when relative speed leads to some hydrodynamic lift, although recently they have been considered for low relative speed. They allow simplified and cheaper construction and among their interesting features is higher roll damping. This appears very attractive for craft that are generally fitted with stabilizing systems and ask for the most reduced roll motions at any and zero speed. This paper presents the results of experimental tests relative to roll decay of two ship models of the same dimensions, displacement and GM values: they have the same warped bottom hull form developed at University of Naples, the first is hard chine and the second has round bilge from transom to midship. Both of them are suitable for displacement and semi-displacement craft operating at medium-low relative speed. The tests have been carried out at University of Naples towing tank, in calm water, at Fn ranging from 0.0 to 0.45. Natural roll frequencies and linear and non linear damping coefficients are reported for all tested speeds allowing a fair comparison of the roll characteristics due to the variation in hull form.

Abstract:
This paper presents findings from a study conducted as part of a joint industry effort involving engineers from Williams Midstream, Stress Engineering Services, Inc., GL Noble Denton, and Saipem America. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the severity of damage inflicted to Williams’ subsea 18-inch × 0.875-inch, Grade X60 Canyon Chief Gas Export Pipeline due to an anchor impact at a water depth of 2,300 feet. The phases of work included an initial assessment after the damage to the deepwater pipeline was detected, evaluating localized damage via finite element analysis based using in-line inspection data, full-scale destructive testing including burst tests, and final efforts included the design and evaluation of a subsea-deployed repair sleeve. The study included modeling Saipem’s repair sleeve design accompanied by full-scale destructive testing. Strain gages were used to measure strain in the reinforced dent beneath the sleeve, that were then compared to prior results for the unrepaired dent test results. The work associated with this study represents one of the more comprehensive efforts conducted to date in evaluating damage to a subsea pipeline. The results of the analysis and testing work provided Williams with a solid understanding on the behavior on the damage inflected to the pipeline and what level of performance can be expected from the repaired pipeline during future operation. After the engineering analysis and testing phases of this work were completed, the deepwater pipeline was repaired.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study is to identify the figurative means in the formal diplomatic texts of speeches of chief delegates of the Ukrainian SSR to exert influence at the sessions of the UN General Assembly. Based on the interpretive method of speech analysis and the method of generalisation of the data obtained, an attempt was made to identify the main figurative means and expressiveness of speech, which help to achieve the effect of influence on the reader (listener). In order to identify hidden meanings, a hermeneutic approach to understanding texts was used. According to the results of the study, the most actively used linguistic means of figurativeness in the considered texts are epithets, metaphors, phraseologies. There are many more negative epithets used in the texts of speeches than positive ones, which aim to make people aware of the idea of self-preservation, to arouse emotions of anxiety, fear, vigilance. Metaphors of positive and negative evaluation are used to verbalise mental states, social states and thought processes. Most of the epithets, metaphors, idioms represented in the text are used to denote a negative evaluation, which is perceived as a deviation from the norm and is motivated by the following factors: the reluctance of people to take positive action, irresponsible attitude of some people towards others, socially unacceptable flaws and shortcomings. A logical continuation of this study is the analysis of linguistic means of figurativeness and evaluativity of other types of texts of the official style, including statements and conventions.

Abstract:
Young people in Kenya have limited knowledge of reproductive health (RH) and face many challenges in their transition to adulthood. Chief among these challenges is the high prevalence of HIV/AIDS among adults and its increasing incidence among rural youth. In 1999, FRONTIERS initiated a three-year project in Kenya to test the feasibility, effectiveness, and cost of interventions to improve adolescent RH. The project, implemented jointly with the Kenyan government and the Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH), was part of a four-country study that examined ways to improve knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of adolescents aged 10 to 19 years. The study took place in six rural communities in Kenya’s Western Province. Two sites received community and health interventions. Two additional sites also received a third school-based intervention, in which teachers, peer educators, and guidance counselors were trained to teach a “life skills curriculum” that included modules on RH, sexuality, and HIV/AIDS. Two control sites received the prevailing government services. As noted in this brief, community, health, and school interventions in rural Kenya increased understanding and discussion of adolescent RH, including prevention of HIV/AIDS, and encouraged safer sexual behavior among young people.
