Lorsque l'Alector de Barthélemy Aneau est paru en 1560, le roman de chevalerie attirait de vives critiques. Il est donc surprenant qu'un humaniste sérieux, tel que l'était Aneau, ait emprunté largement aux conventions romanesques, autant nouvelles (suspens) qu'anciennes (chevalier errant, aventure chevaleresque, quête). Encore plus frappante est son intention déclarée d'imposer un dessein moral et narratif sur un genre défini par son manque de clôture. Le présent article explore le projet d'Aneau de racheter les égarements du roman au moyen de l'allégorie, comprise comme agent fragile du projet moral et de la vérité humanistes contre lesquels conspirent les errements de l'intrigue.

Cet article s’intéresse à l’expérience du temps dont témoigne le texte de Micheline Morisset Arthur Buies, chevalier errant. À l’aide de la notion de régime d’historicité, et plus précisément de celle de présentisme, développée par François Hartog, il y est montré que le texte de Morisset s’inscrit dans un contexte global où le passé est principalement envisagé selon la notion de patrimoine, mais qu’il témoigne également d’une conception littéraire de l’histoire. Faisant de Buies une figure tutélaire de l’histoire littéraire du Québec, Morisset propose de reconsidérer la tradition de lecture nationale en se recentrant autour de l’oeuvre du chroniqueur. Il en découle un rapport complexe au temps, où les enjeux du présentisme se conjuguent à ceux de l’histoire littéraire.

Abstract:
Ressusciter l’héroïsme en réécrivant des épopées aux temps modernes, telle est l’idée commune à l’auteur de la trilogie des Mousquetaires et à Jin Yong, romancier d’arts martiaux souvent appelé « l’Alexandre Dumas chinois ». Mais qu’est-ce qu’un héros ? Chacun des deux écrivains explore à sa manière ce thème majeur de la littérature d’aventures chevaleresques à travers les portraits des grandes figures dans son œuvre, que nous abordons dans notre étude comparative sous trois aspects qui se déroulent comme sur une échelle des plans au cinéma : le parcours évolutif du héros, les relations affectives qui marquent sa personnalité et les traits saillants de son tempérament. Constamment en rapport de forces avec le pouvoir en place souvent représenté par l’autorité paternelle, les mousquetaires dumasiens et les chevaliers errants chez Jin Yong se transforment progressivement en grands transgresseurs qui se débattent contre la fatalité de la caste à laquelle ils appartiennent afin d’agir en liberté dans un monde cherchant à les dompter. Ce fil épique est entouré, à l’instar du bâton d’un thyrse, du fil sentimental. Deux discours de l’amour anticonformistes se construisent, se contrastent et finalement se répondent dans une réalité beaucoup moins rose que l’image codifiée de l’idylle, cédant la place à l’amitié virile, née dans une camaraderie chaleureuse ou des moments d’intensité, idéalisée ou revêtant d’une certaine ambiguïté, et magnifiée dans tous les deux univers romanesques comme une valeur suprême sans forcément être sainte. Le grand écart entre nos héros et le profil d’un chevalier sans peur et sans reproche se fait sentir davantage lorsque l’on les examine de plus près à l’aune du niveau culturel, de la moralité et de la motivation de leurs actes. Très humains en partageant des défauts, des banalités et des limites, ils n’étonnent pas moins par de hautes qualités primitives, sans exclure un accent comique. L’héroïsme est revalorisé dans la continuité et la rupture avec les traditions, dans l’unisson et le choc entre Occident et Orient
Reviving heroism by writing modern epics is a shared authorial intention on the part of the author of the Musketeers trilogy and Jin Yong, a writer of martial arts and chivalry novels often called “China’s Alexandre Dumas”. But what is a hero? These two novelists respectively explore this major theme in chivalric literature through their portrayal of important characters in their works. This comparative study, drawing upon the zooming technique in cinematography, explores these three topics: the heroes’ bildung, the affective relationships that influence their character formation, and the salient features of their personalities. In their constant struggles against the established authorities, especially paternal authorities, the Dumasian musketeers and Jin Yong’s knight-errants gradually transform into great transgressors who struggle to break free from the restraints of the social class to which they belong in order to act freely in a world seeking to tame them. This epic theme is entangled, like Dionysus’s scepter, with the intricacies of affective relationships. Two non-conformist discourses of love are constructed, contrasted and eventually pitted against each other in a reality much less rosy than the codified idyll, as they inevitably give way to the notion of brotherhood, which, either idealized or obfuscated, is celebrated and glorified even with its fallibities. The wide gap between the hero characters and the ideal image of a fearless and infallible knight is all the more visible when we examine them more closely in terms of their book knowledge, moral awareness and behavioral motivation. They are portrayed as ordinary human beings characterized by faults, banalities and limitations, while they are also given a sense of noble savageness and a touch of comic lightheartedness. Heroism is recalibrated in these novel’s conformity to and departure from traditions, and in the context of the harmony and clash between West and East

Le Chevalier errant est une œuvre extrêmement composite de la fin du XIVe siècle. La première partie est consacrée aux multiples incidences de la subjectivité de l'auteur sur le récit. De fréquentes fluctuations entre première et troisième personne y définissent une configuration narrative ambiguë que recoupe la nature partiellement autobiographique de l'œuvre. Plus largement, le Chevalier errant s'inscrit dans le courant des œuvres généalogiques visant à reconstituer le passé, réel ou fantasmé, de la famille des Saluces. Le narrateur fait également souvent allusion à une actualité particulièrement mouvementée dont il rend compte d'une manière plus littéraire que proprement historique. Ceci le conduit à une forme d'engagement moral : Thomas de Saluces propose une certaine vision de la société et des devoirs du prince, il réfléchit au système des valeurs sociales et religieuses de son temps. La seconde partie traite de l'intertextualité: le Chevalier errant est un long prosimètre qui emploie un moule allégorique pour y fondre divers emprunts à l'épopée, à la matière arthurienne, à la matière antique, au lyrisme. . . Cette compilation encyclopédique invite à redéfinir des notions telles que l'unité ou l'originalité d'une œuvre médiévale, ainsi que le plagiat. Le réinvestissement de toutes ces traditions littéraires est influencé par les artes memoriae hérités de l'antiquité. Des remaniements intertextuels reflètent la réflexion des écrivains du XIVe siècle sur leur art et l'évolution des genres littéraires. La troisième partie propose un élargissement de l'analyse vers la dimension visuelle de l'œuvre. Le texte est envisagé comme une image verbale. Les illustrations du manuscrit de la BNF sont examinées dans leur rapport avec le texte. L'auteur a également puisé son inspiration dans son environnement artistique
The Chevalier errant is an extremely composite work of the late fourteenth century. The first part examines the multiple repercussions of the author's subjectivity on his narrative. The frequent fluctuations between the first and the third person create an ambiguous narrative structure which is lit up by the partially autobiographical nature of the work. More generally, the Chevalier errant belongs to the trend of genealogical works seeking to reconstruct the past, be it real or fantasized, of the Saluzzo family. The narrator also frequently alludes to the dramatic events of the time and accounts for them in a more literary than historical manner. This leads him to a moral commitment: Thomas of Saluzzo puts forward his vision of society and of the prince's duties, and he mediates on the social and religious values of his time the second part deals with intertextuality: the Chevalier errant is a long prosimetron using an allegorical frame and incorporating various elements drawn from the epic, the Arthurian legend, antiquity, lyric poetry. . . This encyclopedic compilation leads one to give a new definition of notions such as the unity or the originality of a medieval work, and plagiary. The reinvestment of all these literary traditions is influenced by the artes memoriae inherited from antiquity. Intertextual alterations denote the 14th-century writers ‘reflection on their art and the evolution of literary genres. The third part extends the scope of analysis to the visual dimension of the work. The text is considered as a verbal image. The illustrations of the BNF manuscript are examined in relation to the text. The author also drew some inspiration from his artistic environment

Abstract:
This essay focuses on Le Livre du Chevalier Errant, written by the Piedmontese Marquess Thomas III of Saluzzo between 1394 and 1396 during his imprisonment in Turin. I examine the novel’s complex narrative method in more detail. As early as the introduction of the novel, Thomas of Saluzzo combines allegorical discourse with the narrative methods of the Arthurian novel. The allegory thus becomes less abstract; in the light of the previous novels, it becomes more specific and appears more vivid and detailed. This is followed by an analysis of the role of the three personifications for, Espérance, and Travail, who act as allegorical followers of the protagonist and first-person narrator, and who accompany him. These three characters are presented as individuals in the text, individuals who move independently through space and time; however, they remain tied to the narrator to the extent that they illustrate his various internal states. The fragmentation represented by the allegorical followers explains the strange vacillation between the first person and third person that is a distinguishing feature of the novel. templates, as a mosaic of texts, pictures, motifs, and quotes, all of which contain references to the varied readings of the Marquess of Saluzzo.
