Full text8the history of cherbourg is characterised by its geographical position on a peninsula facing england, and by the interest shown by the great ones of the kingdom : dimplomatic relations with england shaped its fate in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. Its population grouth followed the same pattern : it went through a decline in the wake of the destruction of the port and its fortifications by the english in august 1758. Then, from 1780 on, the huge maritime works undergone under louis xvi brought about a change in its population and the growth of the city which was then faced with an influx of rural people coming for the most part from the "clos du cotentin". This arrival of immigrants let to a switch in people's mentality and their attitude to demography : they learnt how to control births and to curb the death of childrens over 10. In that sense, cherbourg followed the same tendancy as the norman cities in the eighteenth century ; in that regard cherbourg's specificity did not constitute an asset in the charges that occured in the late eighteenth century

Full textFrom the limits of the professional insertion of young people under specialized education, (placing of the young : Social Help for the Young or justice) and having been placed in a boarding schoool before their majority, we will try to show that there is a phenomenom of "virtualisation of work" which began at the end of the French Revolution. We chose to set our demonstration starting from the observation of the sector of Cherbourg, geographical field of our research. We will describe three periods in the process observed. We will first report on a period going from the end of the French Revolution to the end of the Second World War. For this period we will show that in an economic situation of tension there appear, in a combination of circumstances, situations of "virtual work" that we will describe as first "root". We will develop then a second period which extends from 1945 to the coming up of the economic crisis following the first oil crisis in 1973. During this period we will show that the "process of virtualisation of work" finds a new rise in the social will to try to integrate, as far as possible, during this period commonly called " the Thirty Glorious ones", the people on the fringe of the "Ordinary World of Work" because of their social unadaptation due to a handicap, whether physical, mental or social. We will say that the virtual work generated by these situations newly taken into account is of a second "root". Finally we will survey a third period extending from the 1973-1976 turning-point to our days. At this point of our demonstration we will try to show that this period correspond to the globalisation of "virtual work" and its perpetuation. Indeed, from this period the "virtual work" which took root on two stocks, exists in a structural way and can touch from now on any person who is not integrated into the ordinary market of work, whatever the reason

Full textIn the first part, the main stages of the debate about feminism's contributions in social sciences are detailed. This debate results in the built of concepts which all consider principal the relations between men and women in the understanding of the societies. Then we examine a case of gender relations in two european districts, cherbourg (france) and portsmouth (great britain). In the two districts, the state is interfering at a moment. Armament industry and military high technology dominate the local economy. This fact influences and maintians a sexual division of local labour force. This sexual division is observable by the policies of employment choosen by the main industrial enterprises (private or public finance) at a local scale and by the way flexibility and qualification are used

Woodened et sailed ships are always operating beside steam powered ones. So, French Navy seems more as an armoured fleet than ironed one. Iron makers, as Schneider or de Wendel, or engines builders, as Mazeline or Calla, are well known and supply the Navy in the forefront of technology. In the same time, west archaic weaving plants struggle for life thanks to the procurement contracts. And in the harbours where the naval bases are settled, shopkeepers and merchants representing major firms wait for the right moment to become also a supplier and, above all, notables

Full textThe aim of this doctoral thesis is to put an emphasis on the diversity of phenomena related to the presence of American troops from the Liberation until the end of the World war II. Up to now, the landing of the Allied Forces in June 6th 1944 as well as the Battle of Normandy, have been the focus of numerous university publications. Nevertheless, numerous parts of the historical panorama of this region, intermingled with the events, remain unscrutinized. The presence of American troops hinges upon a huge logistic system orchestrated from La Manche ( in the Nord Cotentin ) and more particularly from Cherbourg. This thesis aims at examining this very peculiar military « occupation », derived from the Allied Forces plans called : the Overlord operation, from every angle. At the very beginning, the main objective of Americans is to capture Cherbourg, a deep-water port, as a base to bring more troops and necessary equipments to carry out their « Invasion ». Cherbourg will indeed remain the headquarter of the Normandy Base Section until february 1945. We still need to place the long term settlement of these troops in a context endowed with the political, sociological and economical uncertainties of this period. Considering theses three aspects, we notice that the forced cohabitation of Normans and Americans sometimes highlights the gap between the official history of Franco-American relations and reality. The study of this gap is the true backbone of this thesis. As a matter of fact, the Liberation of Normandy by the Allied Forces in summer 1944 conjures up images of a spontaneous popular jubilation. Yet, a close study of the aforesaid cohabitation falls short of the idyllic images and, on the contrary, reflects a growing deterioration, through time, of human relationships between both groups

Jacques Demy's Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (1964), Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (1967), and Peau d'âne (1970), French musicals from a masterful director of the New Wave movement in cinema, have been generally received positively by the public, and especially by gay viewers. Yet, these Demy films have been met with a range of skepticism to derision by some critics and even by a number of Demy's contemporaries. The three films' narratives concern a nascent romance thwarted by the Algerian War and economic demands, potential amorous encounters prevented by missed connections and arbitrary social barriers, and a flight from incestuous demands and its consequences of isolation and ridicule, respectively. Though these narratives are fundamentally melancholic, they are aestheticized through kaleidoscopic colors, virtuosic dancing, and the beautiful music scores of Michel Legrand. This thesis reexamines these films as a triptych that, considered together, thematizes lack and desire in a way that can speak directly to the queer viewer. Areas of overlap between the filmic narratives and the queer experience in the West are excavated and explored to demonstrate how the films can carry intimate signification to sexual minorities, as well as other marginalized identities. Finally, the particular and continuous aesthetic of the three films is studied as a queer sensibility embodied by the star of all three, Catherine Deneuve. The ability of this triptych to transcend a singular heterosexual interpretation and to heighten its effects on the viewer through a tension of form and content is celebrated.

Full textFrom the end of the XIXth century and until the next days of the World War I, and more particularly from 1849 till 1935, the episode of "the great European emigration" rise to a massive exodus of underprivileged migrants, due to leave for Americas. This human traffic targeted architectural constructive orientation which this thesis of modern and contemporary history, with a speciality in history of the architecture, suggests lighting. Set up by the international, main shipping company's responsable for the regulations of the emigration, for harbour places of transit necessary for the reception and for the temporary accomodation of this precarious population, are set up in the main ports of departure in Europe. These buildings reveal, through several characteristic typologies, urbanistic, migratory, architectural and organizational constants which the specific study of three buildings situated in Amsterdam, Trieste and Cherbourg, allows to release the architectural specificity of the buildings dedicated to those candidates on departure

Full text“ A film is unavoidably a palimpsest” How does a film director inherit ? By which means and what procedures ? To what ends ? A concept such as influence has always been commonly used in all types of arts, but it has rarely been studied itself. The author of Lola, in spite of his unjustified reputation of being a rejected artist, proves to be on the contrary a perfect example in the realm of comparative cinema. Studying his artistic genealogy reveals surprising ancestors and sons. That survey highlighted four different factors as key points in the research and analysis of the different loans, traces or hints of connections to Demy’s works. Key factors that were picked over 80 years of artistic creation allow us to understand the cultural and spiritual basis of a certain community. Firstly returning to the beginning of his works to illustrate the complex relationship that Jaques Demy has with cinema and transmission. Next dissect the signs of his “fraternal” love with wife and fellow film maker Agnès Varda through his movies. Next is looking at his subtle but problematical influence on a few of Nouvelle Vague’s chosen companions. Finally list the miscellaneous forms of his legacy and work out what motivated those who claim being Demy’s heirs. What does one learn from this study of Jaques Demy’s talent and more-over the way his films have been an influence ? We will realise that claiming a filiation with Demy is never disinterested, anything from respect to iconoclasty, but it is first a way to assert one’s identity. Isn’t it the demonstration that his life works must be ranked among masterpieces ?

Full textThis thesis on the dramatical decentralization in Lower Normandy proposes to embrace the period that goes from the 1940s to today, from the launching of a national policy of dramatical decentralization impelled by Jeanne Laurent to the risepower of local authorities in the field of cultural competences. From the end of the second world war and the reconstruction of Caen, we will see how the venues have developed in the region, particularly through the emblematic figure of dramaticaldecentralization in Lower Normandy: Jo Tréhard. Self-taught comedian, director of company and theater, founder of multiple theaters (The “Tonneau”, the “Theatre – Maison de la Culture”, and the Comedy of Caen) and the Normandy Festival. We willthen study the construction of the network of scenes in Lower Normandy, including those with institutional recognition: labeled or approved by the Ministry of Culture (The Theater of Préau to Vire, The SN61 in Alençon, The Trident in Cherbourg, L'Archipel inGranville and the Coutances Theater). Finally, we will see how local authorities complement and support this network, as well as developments related to the latest territorial reforms

Full textFelix AMIOT, born in 1894 in Cherbourg, was an innovative self-taught man, regarded as an engineer with a very clear vision in the industry. He had an original model career in the industry on account of his successful reconversion from the aeronautical industry – he was one of the greatest constructors during the interwar years, beside Bloch (Dassault), Potez and Dewoitine- to the shipbuilding industry, where his shipyard brought him worldwide recognition for the quality of his creations and innovations. The media played a big part in December 1969 in the global recognition of the « ships of Cherbourg » that he had construted. As he died in December 1974, he left behind him an industrial concern with a workforce of more than 1500 people, established worldwide in the building of civilian ships and warships under 1000 tonnes. This Phd thesis aims at relating Felix AMIOT's industrial career, concentrating on the main aspects which formed him : - his technical, organisational competences as well as the industrial strategy that Félix AMIOT developed. - the significance of his meetings – especially the meeting with WERTHEIMERs brothers, who were the owners of Chanel and Bourjois- and of theimportant network in the career of Félix AMIOT, who was known as « a people's person ». - the impact of the constant contact with the state, and his dependence on the decisions of the state on his career as an entrepreneur. By studying these three aspects, we go beyond a simple biography. In fact, Félix AMIOT's example became the means to bring out more general common features of the industrialists in this sector, and the image of entreprises and of the attitude of entrepreneurs under the Occupation
Colson, Louis. "Conception et réalisation d'un dosimètre opérationnel pour la chirurgie interventionnelle assistée par radioscopie X." Thesis, Normandie, 2021. http://www.theses.fr/2021NORMC208.
Full textThis thesis concerns the design of an operational dosimeter for surgeons operating under X-rays. X-rays were discovered in 1895 by Wilhelm Röntgen. Since then, they have been very employed, whether for checks carried out at airports or in the medical field. Very useful for treating people, they are not without danger whether it is for patients or hospital practitioners. Normally, patients are subjected occasionally to irradiation. On the other hand, some hospital practitioners are confronted with daily irradiation. A distinction is made here between “radiography” for diagnostic, who are normally protected during irradiation of the patient, and certain surgeons who use X-rays as a control during the operation and for whom they are close to the irradiated area. This is the issue that this thesis is interested in. The study that we are proposing in partnership with the digital science research laboratory GREYC and the School of Military Applications of Atomic Energy (EAMEA) both located in Cherbourg, is therefore intended to design and produce an X-ray detector for medical applications aimed at giving information for low dose and low energies. The simulation and validation (irradiation)part was done at EAMEA. The rest of the work took place within the GREYC laboratory which has acquired, for several years, real experience in the field of sensors. We started by performing Monte-Carlo simulations using the GEANT4 calculation code in order to define the optimal geometry of the sensor. Following these simulation results, we produced the sensor by rf magnetron sputtering by successive deposition of thin layers. The sensitive layer of the sensor was subject to Raman characterization, the results of which were compared with the literature. Once the sensor had been produced, we carried out a characterization under a flow of X-rays emitted from a continuous X-ray generator. The various tests with the generator continued made it possible to develop a signal acquisition chain in order to test the sensor under a pulsed radiation field in the Centre Hospitalier Public du Cotentin
