Abstract:
A one-parameter family of differential systems that bridges the gap between the Lorenz and the Chen systems was proposed by Lu, Chen, Cheng and Celikovsy. The goal of this paper is to analyze what we can say using analytic tools about the dynamics of this one-parameter family of differential systems. We shall describe its global dynamics at infinity, and for two special values of the parameter a we can also describe the global dynamics in the whole ℝ3using the invariant algebraic surfaces of the family. Additionally we characterize the Hopf bifurcations of this family.

Abstract:
Bipolar electrochemistry emerges as an appealing technique for gradient surface fabrication thanks to the controllable potential distribution on bipolar electrodes (BPEs) in a wireless manner [1]. Here we report a BPE array named the single-electrode electrochemical system (SEES) [2] for the high-throughput electrosynthesis of gradient polypyrrole (PPy) films via electropolymerization. The SEES consists of a plastic board with holes attached to an indium-tin oxide (ITO) electrode to create multiple microelectrochemical cell arrays. Benefiting from this technique, the effects of various electrolysis conditions on film growth, such as applied voltage, electrodeposition time and electrolyte, etc., were systematically investigated. The length, thickness, surface morphology, and wettability, of the obtained PPy films were investigated [3]. The SEES provides a straightforward comparison of experimental results and hence facilitates the condition screening process. References: N. Shida, Y. Zhou, S. Inagi, Acc. Chem. Res., 2019, 52, 2598. Abstract:
This paper addresses the synchronization problem of two modified Chen systems in the presence of unknown system parameters. One-way coupling and active control laws are applied to achieve the state synchronization of two identical modified Chen systems. Based on Lyapunov stability theory, active control laws are derived such that the two modified Chen systems are to be synchronized. Numerical simulations results are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control methods.

Abstract:
In this paper, the research of the Jacobi stability of the Chen system is performed by using the KCC-theory. By associating a nonlinear connection and a Berwald connection, five geometrical invariants of the Chen system are obtained. The Jacobi stability of the Chen system at equilibrium points and a periodic orbit is investigated in terms of the eigenvalues of the deviation curvature tensor. The obtained results show that the origin is always Jacobi unstable, while the Jacobi stability of the other two nonzero equilibrium points depends on the values of the parameters. And a periodic orbit of the Chen system is proved to be also Jacobi unstable. Furthermore, Jacobi stability regions of the Chen system and the Lorenz system are compared. Finally, the dynamical behavior of the components of the deviation vector near the equilibrium points is also discussed.

This paper presents a novel unified hyperchaotic system that contains the hyperchaotic Lorenz system and the hyperchaotic Chen system as two dual systems at the two extremes of its parameter spectrum. The new system is hyperchaotic over almost the whole range of the system parameter and continuously transfers from the hyperchaotic Lorenz system to the hyperchaotic Chen system. The new findings are not only demonstrated by computer simulations but also verified with bifurcation analysis, Lyapunov exponents and Lyapunov dimension.

We first investigate sufficient and necessary conditions of stability of nonlinear distributed order fractional system and then we generalize the integer-order Chen system into the distributed order fractional domain. Based on the asymptotic stability theory of nonlinear distributed order fractional systems, the stability of distributed order fractional Chen system is discussed. In addition, we have found that chaos exists in the double fractional order Chen system. Numerical solutions are used to verify the analytical results.

In this paper, we study chaos control of the fractional order Chen system with the bounded random parameter. Firstly, we transform the fractional order Chen system with random parameter into an equivalent deterministic system by the orthogonal polynomial approximation. Secondly, based on Routh-Hrwitz criterion, the derivative feedback control laws are applied to fractional order equivalent deterministic Chen system. Lastly, numerical simulations show that the control method is effective and feasible.

This article addresses the adaptive synchronization problem of two Chen systems with uncertain parameters. Two adaptive synchronization methods are designed. In the two methods, we use only two controllers to synchronize uncertain Chen systems. It is theoretically proved that these two methods can make uncertain Chen systems asymptotically synchronized and identify the unknown parameters. Numerical simulations show the effectiveness of the proposed methods further. The comparisons of these two methods show: The method of theorem 1 is easier and more feasible than that of theorem 2, and the synchronization results are better.

Abstract:
Abstract The multilingual ecology of Taiwan includes the official language Mandarin, the vernaculars Hokkien and Hakka, as well as several Aboriginal Austronesian languages. In this context, English has emerged as an important additional language, not least in the education system. Research on English in Taiwan has thus far largely been restricted to the educational setting (Chen 2006; Chien 2014; Kao & Tsou 2017; Wu & Lau 2019) or to the function of English as an international language (Chen 2006). Some, such as Seilhamer (2015; 2019), have focused on the sociolinguistic realities of English on the island, bringing the issue of language ‘ownership’ to the foreground. This, combined with recurring proposals to elevate English to co-official status (Chen, Shih, Yeh & Lee 2018), suggests considerable societal importance attached to the language. However, much less is known about the actual form and structure of Taiwanese English. In this chapter, we present data from a 76,000-word pilot version of the Taiwanese Spoken English corpus (TASE, see Rüdiger, Leimgruber & Tseng 2023). Taking previous studies of spoken South Korean English into account (Rüdiger 2019; 2021; Rüdiger, Leimgruber & Tseng 2023), we present a case study of discourse-pragmatic uses of like by Taiwanese speakers of English. Our findings suggest that the functional range of like is similar in Taiwan and South Korea and that discourse-pragmatic like also forms part of Taiwanese English speakers’ repertoire.

Abstract:
Four years ago, I accepted the fascinating challenge of teaching a Big Data course. The thematic proposal was intimidating, as it presented an approach devoid of "ready-to-use" tools and, instead, proposed a highly technical approach (Kumar et al., 2022). This required meticulous and mechanical practice that consisted of mastering the Linux operating system, configuring virtual machines, and installing more than half a dozen tools through command line, as well as configuring an endless list of system files (.sh, .ini, etc.). These specialized practices demand considerable time and expertise from the instructor (Wang & Chen, 2023). Back then, AI assistants like ChatGPT or Claude didn't exist. Class preparation without these tools became an arduous and often torturous process of achieving the ideal pedagogical strategy. Here, aspects such as class script, narrative resources, demonstrative arguments, effective design of examples, and the development of questionnaires, glossaries, case studies, group dynamics, among others, became relevant.

Abstract:
The purpose of this Coastal and Hydraulics Engineering technical note (CHETN) is to describe how historic Automatic Identification System (AIS) vessel position data were used to identify a design vessel for use in a storm surge barrier design study. Specifically, this CHETN describes how the AIS data were accessed, how the universe of vessel data was refined to allow for design vessel selection, and how that selection was used in a storm surge barrier (SSB) study. This CHETN draws upon the New Jersey Back Bays Coastal Storm Risk Management Feasibility Study (USACE-NAP 2019), specifically the Appendix B.2 Engineering Appendix Civil document1. The New Jersey Back Bays Study itself builds upon the work of the North Atlantic Coast Comprehensive Study (NACCS) initiated after Hurricane Sandy in 2012 (USACE 2015a).

LeGrand, Sandra, Christopher Polashenski, Theodore Letcher, Glenn Creighton, Steven Peckham, and Jeffrey Cetola. The AFWA dust emission scheme for the GOCART aerosol model in WRF-Chem v3.8.1. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/41560.

Abstract:
Airborne particles of mineral dust play a key role in Earth’s climate system and affect human activities around the globe. The numerical weather modeling community has undertaken considerable efforts to accurately forecast these dust emissions. Here, for the first time in the literature, we thoroughly describe and document the Air Force Weather Agency (AFWA) dust emission scheme for the Georgia Institute of Technology–Goddard Global Ozone Chemistry Aerosol Radiation and Transport (GOCART) aerosol model within the Weather Research and Forecasting model with chemistry (WRF-Chem) and compare it to the other dust emission schemes available in WRF-Chem. The AFWA dust emission scheme addresses some shortcomings experienced by the earlier GOCART-WRF scheme. Improved model physics are designed to better handle emission of fine dust particles by representing saltation bombardment. WRF-Chem model performance with the AFWA scheme is evaluated against observations of dust emission in southwest Asia and compared to emissions predicted by the other schemes built into the WRF-Chem GOCART model. Results highlight the relative strengths of the available schemes, indicate the reasons for disagreement, and demonstrate the need for improved soil source data.

Abstract:
The purpose of this Coastal and Hydraulics Engineering technical note (CHETN) is to discuss the concept, demonstrations, and the initial results of multiyear proof-of-concept testing of the capability to share weather data from ships via the Automatic Identification System (AIS). Technical foundations of this process were described by Tetreault and Johnson (2020) with partial results described in Johnston et al. 2021. The updated results in this CHETN include evaluation of the efficacy of the various application-specific message (ASM) formats use to communicate the weather observations and data reception results for selected vessels that have been participating in the proof-of-concept field deployment since 2019 or later.

Paqueo, Vicente, Johanna Marie Astrid Sister, Solomon Sarne, et al. The Impact of Trifocalization on Philippine Education Outcomes and the Coordination Issue. Philippine Institute for Development Studies, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.62986/dp2024.15.

Abstract:
Thirty-two years ago, the First Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM I) established a trifocalized Philippine Educational and Training System (PETS) to ramp up the achievement of the country’s educational and training goals. EDCOM I aimed to raise the system’s performance by transforming the PETS from a centralized Department of Education, Culture and Sports (DECS) into a system comprising three separate national education agencies, each vested with the responsibility and authority to lead on education and training matters. These agencies are the Department for Basic Education (DepEd), the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). Despite well-intentioned reform efforts advocated by EDCOM I, the PETS is not performing as well as education and development leaders had hoped. This state of affairs has led some influential leaders and advisers of EDCOM II to call for a reversal or modification of the current trifocalized PETS. This study seeks to address the aforementioned concerns and to analyze the proposal to reverse or modify trifocalization. To this end, the analysis aims to determine the impact of trifocalization on desired education and skills development outcomes in the Philippines using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. This study finds that trifocalization has had no statistically significant impact on education outcomes at conventional confidence levels. The empirical results are consistent with findings from key informant interviews. Furthermore, the study discusses why a trifocalized PETS might not work as expected. Given its findings, the report offers several reform ideas that EDCOM II may want to consider to enable and incentivize the trifocalized system to function more effectively, especially regarding coordination and other issues that key informants regard as fundamental. One recommendation is the establishment of an independent agency with oversight responsibilities and powers to hold DepEd, CHED, and TESDA and other related agencies accountable for their performance in the PETS.
