Abstract:
Abstract This paper focuses on the conservation of the lyre (chelys) of Grave 48, from the area between the so-called ‘Eriai’ Gates and the Dipylon. First, it describes the lifting of the lyre (sound box) from the ground and the recovery of the fragile plaques and fragments from the compact block of soil in the laboratory. Subsequently, it presents the extensive conservation work undertaken by the present writer and her team. Furthermore, it summarizes the conclusions of the X-Radiography and Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) examinations of the sound box and the string holder and provides information about the biochemistry, structure and decay of the tortoise shell. In conclusion, the collaboration between conservator and archaeomusicologist, during the remedial conservation treatment, was of great importance, and helped with the identification of the plaques and restoration of the lyre.

Abstract:
Two new species of alvinocaridid shrimps are described from a hydrothermal vent field off northeastern Taiwan at depths of 252–300 m. Alvinocaris chelys n. sp. is morphologically very similar to A. williamsi Shank & Martin, 2003 from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, and A. alexander Ahyong, 2009 from the southern Kermadec Ridge. These three species can be differentiated by the shape of the postrostral ridge, telson, the second segment of the antennular peduncle and the armature of the meri and ischia of the third pereopod. The second new species, although rather similar to Alvinocaris niwa Webber, 2004 from the Kermadec-Arc, is assigned to a new genus Alvinocaridinides gen. nov., which appears to be intermediate between Shinkaicaris Komai & Segonzac, 2005 and other derived genera including Opaepele Williams & Dobbs, 1995, Chorocaris Martin & Hessler, 1990 and Rimicaris Williams & Rona, 1986. Alvinocaridinides formosa n. sp. differs from Alvinocaris niwa by completely lacking any armature on the ischia of the third to fifth pereopods and by bearing two movable spines at the posterolateral angle of the uropodal exopod. These records constitute the first discovery of the family Alvinocarididae in Taiwanese waters and represent the shallowest occurrence for alvinocaridid shrimps.

The neotropical weevil genus Embates Chevrolat is revised. New synonyms of Embates are Drepanambates Jekel, Batames Casey, Macrambates Casey and Cholinambates Casey. Information is provided about the morphology of the immature stages, life history, sexual dimorphism and morphological variability. A total of 69 species is recognized in Middle America, 38 of which are newly described here: E. aequiperabilis, E. aliquantulus, E. bicoctura, E. burgeri, E. callifer, E. chelys, E.clandestinus, E. consimilis, E. cordiger, E. crinipes, E. discissus, E. discordabilis, E. euchasma, E. euscheme, E. flavoplagiatus, E. galbinus, E. gilvopictus, E. gracilis, E. intermedius, E. kunicus, E. maculifer, E. marchionis, E. mendax, E. oculifer, E. paludicola, E. paucilimbatus, E. pauhans, E. peperomiae, E. politus, E. pseudobumbraticus, E. pullus, E. rutilus, E. sagittifolicus, E. scambus, E. subulirostris, E. terrabanicus, E. todillofasciatus and E. uniformis. Six new subspecies are described: E. polymorphus altrimsecus, E. polymorphus dotensis, E. polymorphus fortunensis, E. polymorphus tabulensis, E. polymorphus zeledonensis and E. leucopleura discolor. New combinations are E. belti (Champion), E. leucopleura (Champion) and E. flavolimbatus (Voss) [all from Drepanambates]. New synonyms are E. belti [= E. triangularis (Champion)], E. fasciolatus (Chevrolat) [= E. sexpunctatus (Champion)] and E. solani (Champion) [= E. divisus (Casey)]. Embates rugosus (Hustache) is distinguished from E. solani and resurrected as a valid species. New records for Middle America are E. flavolimbatus (Voss), E. justini (Chevrolat) and E. rugosus. Descriptions, line drawings of habitus and male genitalia, geographic distributions, plant associations and keys for identification are provided.

Abstract:
The animal communities associated with the deep-sea reducing environment have been studied for almost 30 years, but until now only a single species of ophiuroid, Ophioctenella acies, has been found at both hydrothermal vents and methane cold seeps. Since the faunal overlap between vent and seep communities is small and many endemic species have been found among other taxa (e.g. Mollusca, Crustacea), additional species of ophiuroids were expected at previously unstudied sites. Chemical compositions at reducing sites differ greatly from the nearby bathyal environment. Generally, species adapted to chemosynthetic environments are not found in non-chemosynthetic habitats, but occasional visitors of other bathyal species to vent and seep sites have been recorded among many taxa except ophiuroids. This paper presents an analysis of the ophiuroid fauna found at hydrothermal vents and non-reducing nearby sites on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and on methane cold seeps in the Gulf of Mexico, at Blake Ridge off South Carolina and south of Barbados. In addition to O. acies, four species were found at vents, Ophiactis tyleri sp. nov., Ophiocten centobi, Ophiomitra spinea and Ophiotreta valenciennesi rufescens. While Ophioctenella acies appears to be restricted to chemosynthetic areas, the other four species were also found in other bathyal habitats. They also occur in low numbers (mostly single individuals), whereas species adapted to hydrothermal areas typically occur in large numbers. Ophioscolex tripapillatus sp. nov. and Ophiophyllum atlanticum sp. nov. are described from nearby non-chemosynthetic sites. In a cold seep south of Barbados, three species of ophiuroids were found, including Ophioctenella acies, Amphiura sp., Ophiacantha longispina sp. nov. and Ophioplinthaca chelys. From the cold seeps at Blake Ridge and the Gulf of Mexico, Ophienigma spinilimbatum gen. et sp. nov. is described, likely restricted to the reducing environment. Ophiotreta valenciennesi rufescens occurred abundantly among Lophelia corals in the Gulf of Mexico seeps, which is the first record of this species from the West Atlantic. Habitat descriptions complement the taxonomic considerations, and the distribution of the animals in reducing environments is discussed.

A ocorrência de fenómenos naturais adversos num ambiente de vulnerabilidade, sempre constituiu um catalisador para a mobilidade das pessoas das áreas inseguras para as seguras. O estudo é qualitativo, baseia-se em entrevistas estruturadas e grupos de discussão e avalia a situação das mulheres chefes de agregados familiares e suas crianças como refugiadas ambientais no Distrito do Chókwè. Os resultados apontam que a baixa frequência escolar; habitação precária; dependência total da agricultura como actividade de sustento e de geração de renda, constituem alguns aspectos de vulnerabilidade à efeitos de desastres naturais nas mulheres chefes de agregados familiares daquele Distrito. Nos centros de acomodação as fracas condições socioeconómicas da mulher chefe de agregado familiar, além de resultarem no acesso limitado aos serviços de saúde, o que contribui para o surgimento de doenças entre mulheres e consequente perda de vida devido a carência na alimentação, estas são expostas à prostituição, pois a ajuda alimentar que é prestada é maioritariamente gerida por homens. A generalização das informações que constam dos relatórios, oculta que os impactos de cheias sejam sentidos fundamentalmente por este grupo-alvo. Assim há necessidade de pesquisas no Distrito que apontem os efeitos das cheias, considerando a condição dos mais vulneráveis.

Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Arquitetura, com a especialização em Arquitetura apresentada na Faculdade de Arquitetura da Universidade de Lisboa para obtenção do grau de Mestre.
Desde o final do século XX, a zona ribeirinha na parte oriental de Lisboa ficou marcada por uma série fábricas desocupadas. Com a desindustrialização, essas fábricas foram desativadas, transformando-se num conjunto de construções abandonadas, mas com grande viabilidade para ser reabilitado. Este território encontra-se separado da cidade devido à agregação de construções de várias épocas, sem uma ligação entre as mesmas. A proposta deste Projeto Final de Mestrado pretende criar uma nova centralidade nesta parte de Lisboa, um pólo gerador que sirva a população e potencie o encontro social e cultural e que se interligue com a restante cidade. Essa intenção é realizada através da reutilização desses espaços industriais, alguns em ruínas, adaptando-os à realidade contemporânea. A área de intervenção nessa faixa ribeirinha incide no Vale de Chelas, que é relativamente central, dado ser localizado entre dois grandes centros urbanos, a Baixa Pombalina e o Parque das Nações. O edifício selecionado para o trabalho foi a Fábrica da Samaritana, no qual se propõe uma construção multifuncional, com usos que procuram reaproximar a população residente, tornando-o num lugar de encontro. Junto com a reabilitação do edifício, foi delineada uma estrutura de consolidação dos arranjos exteriores, correspondente ao Vale de Chelas, considerado um corredor verde que deve ser trabalhado e preservado. Observando as constantes transformações urbanas, a proposta tenciona manter a memória da antiga realidade industrial, adaptando as novas funções de uma forma pouco intrusiva, para que possam sempre ser revertidas.
ABSTRACT: Since the end of the 20th century, the riverside area in the eastern part of Lisbon was marked by a series of unoccupied factories. With the de-industrialization, these factories were deactivated, becoming a set of abandoned buildings, but with great viability to be rehabilitated. This territory is separated from the city due to the aggregation of constructions of several times, without a connection between them. The purpose of this Final Master Project is to create a new centrality in this part of Lisbon, a generator that serves the population and fosters a social and cultural encounter and interconnects with the rest of the city. This intention is realized through the reuse of these industrial spaces, some in ruins, adapting them to the contemporary reality. The area of intervention in this river front is the Chelas Valley, which is relatively central, since it is located between two large urban centers, Baixa Pombalina and Parque das Nações. The building selected for the work was the Fábrica da Samaritana, which proposes a multifunctional construction, with uses that seek to re-approximate the resident population, making it a meeting place. Along with the rehabilitation of the building, a structure of consolidation of the exterior arrangements, corresponding to the Valley of Chelas was considered, a green corridor that must be worked and preserved. Observing the constant urban transformations, the proposal intends to maintain the memory of the old industrial reality, adapting the new functions in a non-intrusive way, so that they can always be reversed.

Resumo: Sejam por causas naturais, como os eventos hidrológicos atípicos, ou por ação humana, as cheias têm se tornado cada vez mais frequentes. No Brasil, existem áreas que sofrem com a repetição destes desastres, como é o caso de União da Vitória, no Estado do Paraná. Este tipo de fenômeno natural pode causar inúmeros danos à sociedade, desde perdas humanas até prejuízos financeiros, e, como não é possível evitar a ocorrência de fenômenos críticos, procura-se diminuir os seus impactos. Neste cenário se insere o agrupamento de cheias, visando estabelecer conjuntos de eventos com características semelhantes para, posteriormente, estudar os seus mecanismos de formação e contribuir para a diminuição das consequências provocadas pelas cheias. Dentro deste contexto, o presente estudo utiliza o algoritmo fuzzy c-means como método de agrupamento de cheias, que permitiu classificar os 85 eventos máximos anuais de cheia no rio Iguaçu, observadas na cidade de União da Vitória no Estado do Paraná, no período de 1931 a 2015, em quatro grupos distintos: grupos de severidade baixa, média e alta, e grupo de eventos catastróficos. Abstract: Being from natural causes, as atypical hydrological events or by human actions, floods have become more frequent. In Brazil, there are areas that suffer from the repetition of these disasters, like the city of União da Vitória, in the state of Parana. This kind of natural phenomenon can cause many damages to society, from human to financial losses and, once it is not possible to avoid the occurrence of critical phenomena, it is necessary to reduce their impacts. The flood clustering is included in this scenario, trying to determine clusters of events with similar characteristics to, subsequently, study its formation mechanisms and contribute to the reduction of the consequences caused by them. In this context, the present study uses the fuzzy c-means algorithm as the method for flood clustering, which allowed classifying the 85 annual maximum flood events in the Iguaçu River, observed in the city of União da Vitória, in the state of Paraná, from 1931 to 2015, in 4 distinct clusters: Low, Middle and High severity groups, and Catastrophic Events group. A reabilitação de preexistências é uma temática central na consolidação da cidade atual, marcada pela existência de vazios urbanos e edifícios devolutos. As zonas mais afetadas por esta realidade são áreas anteriormente periféricas à cidade e agora centrais, ocupadas por complexos industriais que atualmente se encontram deslocados para a periferia. Verifica-se assim a necessidade de repensar estes lugares, testemunhos de uma era industrial. Perante o olhar critico sobre estes lugares marcados pelo abandono das fábricas, o presente trabalho estuda a necessidade de reutilização de espaços devolutos em Lisboa, com foco nos complexos industriais do vale de Chelas. É percetível neste território a presença de um vasto património de cariz industrial, que apesar da sua importância histórica e valor arquitetónico se encontra em degradação, contribuindo para a sua desintegração. Identificada esta problemática, pretende-se com este trabalho a consolidação, à escala urbana, do vale de Chelas, procurando um novo sentido para a ligação entre a parte a norte do vale e o rio Tejo. Formalizando uma proposta de reutilização e reconversão das antigasinstalações do complexo Tinturaria Portugália, o projeto trata as preexistências do antigo complexo industrial, valorizando a sua memória industrial têxtil, bem como atribuindo a este edifício uma nova estrutura. Possibilita-se, assim a reinterpretação do que são espaços criativos ligados à cidade contemporanêa.
ABSTRACT: The rehabilitation of pre-existences, is a central theme in the consolidation of the present city, often marked by the existence of empty urban spaces and empty buildings. The areas most affected by this abandonment are areas, formerly peripheral and now central, occupied by industrial complexes that are now displaced to the periphery of cities. This is thus an urban question to be solved. Given the critical view on these spaces affected by the abandonment of the factories, the present work studies the need for reuse of empty spaces in Lisbon, more concretely of industrial spaces in the valley of Chelas. In this territory, the presence of a vast patrimony of an industrial nature, which, despite its historical importance and architectural value, is degraded, contributes to the disintegration of the urban fabric. Inserted in this reality, this work intends the consolidation, in urban scale, of the valley of Chelas, looking for a new sense for the connection between the north part of the valley and the Tagus river. Formalizing a proposal for the reuse and conversion of the old facilities of the Portugália Tinturaria complex, the project takes place on the pre-existing industrial complex, enhancing its industrial textile memory, as well as complementing this building with a new structure. This will enable the reinterpretation of what are creative spaces linked to the current city.

Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Arquitetura, com a especialização em Arquitetura apresentada na Faculdade de Arquitetura da Universidade de Lisboa para obtenção do grau de Mestre.
O presente projeto propõe uma reflexão, à escala urbana e arquitectónica, sobre edifícios industriais que se encontram em ruína no Vale de Chelas, a oriente da cidade de Lisboa. Torna-se fundamental investigar as razões pelas quais esta zona da cidade ainda permanece expectante em comparação com a restante e encontrar soluções que invertam essa situação. Este exercício parte da premissa de estudar o passado, entender o contexto atual e propor soluções, através da arquitectura, de forma a revitalizar esta zona oriental da cidade de Lisboa. Para isso foram abordados diversos temas, tais como: a cidade vista como palimpsesto, o património industrial e os conceitos fundamentais para uma revitalização urbana eficiente. O projeto incide sobre as pré-existências da Fábrica Tinturaria Portugália, para a qual se propõe um programa com um cariz socioeconómico bastante forte e com o propósito da reutilização da fábrica como motor de uma nova microcentralidade. Ao longo deste exercício procurou-se o diálogo entre os conceitos de memória do lugar, respeito pelo património e contemporaneidade.
ABSTRACT: This project purpose a reflection, in an urban and architectonic scale, about the industrial buildings that are in ruin in Vale de Chelas, in the orient side of Lisbon. It is essential/critical to search for the reasons this area is remaining in suspense, stopped growing in comparison with the rest of the city, and found solutions to surpass this situation. This effort starts with the idea of studying the past, understanding the current context and offers solutions to revitalize the oriental side of Lisbon, through the architecture. For that were analyzed several topics, such as the city like a palimpsest industrial heritage and the vital concepts for efficient urban revitalization. This project focuses on the preexistence of the Tinturaria Portugalia industry, to which purpose a program with a strong socioeconomic component and with the aim of reutilizing the factory as an engine of a micro-centrality. Throughout this exercise, the dialogue sought between the concepts of the place memory, respect for heritage and contemporaneity.

Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Arquitetura, com a especialização em Arquitetura apresentada na Faculdade de Arquitetura da Universidade de Lisboa para obtenção do grau de Mestre.
O convento de Chelas, situa-se no Vale de Chelas na zona oriental de Lisboa. É uma das mais antigas casas monásticas da cidade, tendo sido testemunho de variadas ocupações e usos diferenciados que imprimiram um caráter mutante ao longo dos anos. Encontra-se atualmente ocupado pelo Arquivo Geral do Exército, que mantém preservadas as suas dependências conventuais e industriais. O grande estado de degradação do Convento e o panorama de abandono do meio urbano, cria uma janela de oportunidade para reflexão acerca da sua reabilitação e perspetiva futura. Insere-se na discussão da importância da preservação do património religioso e industrial que se encontra ao longo do Vale de Chelas. É nesse sentido que se procura entender o papel que o Convento de Chelas e a sua cerca terão no futuro do Vale e a dinâmica que podem imprimir na sua envolvente. Assim, o objetivo do trabalho passa por analisar o objeto de estudo num enquadramento mais alargado e profundo, recorrendo a uma metodologia baseada na experiência humana no lugar, incidindo na individualidade e especificidade do Convento. Este conjunto conventual apresenta uma forte pretensão de se manter como parte integrante da paisagem do Vale que merece ser preservada. É nesse sentido, que se apresenta aqui, a proposta para uma intervenção fundamentada por uma leitura fenomenológica, que visa restituir um futuro a este conjunto conventual.
ABSTRACT: The Convent of Chelas is situated in the Chelas Valley in eastern Lisbon. It is one of the oldest monastics housed of the city, it has witnessed numerous occupations and different uses that gave a changing character throughout the years. It is currently occupied by the General Archives of the Army, maintaining its convent and industrial premises. The great state of degradation of the convent and the panorama of neglection of the urban environment characterized by void and ruins, gives a window opportunity to reflect on its rehabilitation and future perspective. It is part of the discussion on the importance of the preservation of the religious and industrial heritage that exists along the Chelas Valley. This is how one tries to understand the role that the Convent of Chelas and its fence will have in the valley and the consequent dynamics that will print in its surrounding. Thus, the objective of the project is to analyse the object of study in a broader and deeper context, using a methodology base on human experience in site, with focus on the individuality and specificity of the Convent. The Convent complex present a strong will to remain an integral part of the valley landscape that deserves to be preserved. Therefore, it is presented here, the proposal for an intervention based on a phenomenological reading, which aims to restore the future of this Convent.

Introdução - A estrutura de qualquer cidade compõe-se de uma amplitude e heterogeneidade que é realçada a cada passo da observação; contudo o homem, na sua interde-pendência e interrelacionação e na sua envolvência com os ecossistemas, constitui a sua expressão de base. Por vezes a estrutura organizada não corresponde aos inter¬esses de quem a compõe. A mobilidade constante da população que atravessa em cada passo, cada vez mais acelerado, a rapidez da mudança da estrutura da comunidade e prepara assim a diversidade dos agrupamentos sociais levando a problemas de desorientação pessoal e colectiva de onde, a estrutura física da cidade, muda também. Todo este estado de coisas desafia a manutenção da vida comunitária dentro de uma ordem social. Seguindo a óptica da Escola de Chicago e encarando a cidade como comunidade ecológica desenvolvi as minhas verificações de campo no bairro de Chelas, particularmente na comunidade negra que compõe o seu tecido social. Originariamente criado para ser um habitat de características relacionadas com habitação residencial substituindo-se por um centro de habitação social, sem qualquer capacidade de resposta local de emprego, subsistiu através do tempo como "dormitório". Chelas recebeu no seu seio e está a receber uma ampla população que se deslocou das barracas em toda a periferia, sendo aqui realojados. Essa população é hoje predominantemente de "raça negra'. A competição, a ordem natural e a ordem moral, melhor sendo a sociedade simbiótica e a cultural entraram em jogo, os valores alteraram-se e a disposição da população ganhou um sentido diferente de uma disposição ordenada. Geraram-se "áreas naturais" que defino com Park - "... como o 'habitat' de grupos de gente que, na base da sua existência num território comum, desenvolverão culturas distintas. Elas são 'naturais' naquilo em que não são planeadas - não são resultado do desenho, são antes uma manifestação de tendências inerentes à situação urbana". A comunidade negra de Chelas constitui uma área natural de acordo com a definirão. Pretendi caminhar de encontro à possibilidade ou não da constituirão de áreas locais, como sendo meio "... para proporcionar as bases para a organização da comunidade na sociedade urbana. O estado final do processo de urbanização será uma constelação de grupos sub-culturais fundados nas vizinhanças mantidos juntos através da interdependência da divisão do trabalho", cf. R.E.Park, The City as a social laboratory (1929) incluído em Park, Human Communities, pag. 78; e que, nenhuma grande cidade é uma massa indiferencida mas um grupo reconhecido de arredores disponíveis não só pela sua aparência fisica mas pela composição da sua população e pela sua reputação. Esta observação da separação espacial da população da cidade, a existência de mundos separados da experiência são base da visão de Park da vida urbana: os arredores, colónias e áreas segregadas de cidade são vistos como sendo um "mosaico de pequenos mundos que se tocam, mas que não se interpenetram". A comunidade negra de Chelas, encontra-se nesta situacão, o mesmo acontecendo com o próprio bairro de Chelas, como se pode constatar pela realidade observada; sendo que são estes arredores, colónias e áreas segregadas que dão à cidade a sua diversidade, novidade e excitamento cf . o R. Abstract The waters of northwestern Mexico (fig. 20.1) have been among the most important feeding and developmental grounds in the eastern Pacific for 5 of the world’s 7 species of sea turtles. These are, in order of abundance: the green turtle (Chelonia mydas), known locally as the “black turtle,” the loggerhead (Caretta caretta), the olive ridley (Lepido-chelys olivacea), the leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), and the hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata). Most depend on shallow costal habitats for the abundant food resources, but the leatherback, a pelagic species, instead cruises offshore. Due to ex-ploitation of eggs and turtles as food and, to a lesser extent, incidental mortality relating to marine fish-eries and degradation of marine and nesting habitats, sea turtle populations have declined throughout the region.
