Full textThis thesis was conducted into a parnership between ENTPE university of Lyon, AREA and Eiffage Travaux Publics. Current methods of determination and prediction of damage to highway pavement structures are unreliable and need to be improved. The aim of the thesis is to establish an back analysis procedure from the deflection measurements fiving access to material behavior parameters of each pavement layers. A first step is to define more precisely the states of stress and deformation existing in the different layers of pavement. For this reason, a motorway pavement instrumentation was performed near Aix les Bains in France. 47 strain sensors and temperature were implanted into the structure in three layers during maintenance works in August 2012.In parallel, pavement materials were collected on motorways to characterize their behavior. Complex modulus tests were used to determine the thermo-viscoelalstic properties of materials. These results were used to modeling the deformation of the pavement and compared with measurements. Deflection measurements were also performed on the instrumented pavement with a curviameter device. The reseults were compared to modeling. The observed differences have helped to provide a critical analysis of deflection measurements

Full textThis work is part of a better assessment of the effects of actual loads on the durability of asphalt pavements. This thesis proposes an original method for the improvement of the evaluation of the aggressiveness on asphalt pavements the new types of heavy trucks whose configuration of axles is not taken into account in the regulations today. She combines a numerical approach and an operational approach. The "numerical" approach based on an analysis of horizontal strain signals in the passage of traffic loads on three pavement structures of experimental design, taken from the French design code (LCPC-SETRA, 1998). To this end, the response of these pavements at viscoelastic behavior is evaluated by 3D numerical modeling at moving load. To ensure the reliability of the method used, the computed strain signals are first compared and validated by strain signals from an experimental pavement, instrumented and tested on the circular test track of IFSTTAR Nantes. The computed signals from modeling are then analyzed based on the variables of loading (vehicle speed, temperature of bituminous materials, load configuration, distance inter-axle, rest period between the axles, rigidity of the materials, and loads on the curved road section). Other aspects such as shear stress between the surface course (in asphalt concrete) and the road base of asphalt material as well as the dissipated energy on a cycle of loading are also analyzed. From these computed signals, fatigue lives expectancy of pavement structures of experimental design are evaluated based on influential parameters. The aggressiveness of traffic is then determined from these fatigue lives expectancy in current section and curved road section ("operational" approach). The results are promising and will undoubtedly exploited and used by the whole community of "road. "

Full textAccelerated pavement tests (APT) have been increasingly used in recent years to assess the behaviour of pavement structures and their lifetimes. This is mainly due to their ability to simulate the full-scale effect of traffic loads and climatic conditions on pavements, in ashort period of time, and to follow the behaviour of the pavements until the end of their service life. These tests make it possible to evaluate pavement design methods or the use of innovative pavement materials and structures. However, the measurements made during accelerated pavement tests are numerous and varied, and there is no common approach to assess the behaviour of the studied pavements. The main objective of this thesis is to develop a methodology to analyse the behaviour of pavements, in accelerated tests, from their initial conditions to their final level of deterioration. This approach is applied to an experiment carried out at Université GustaveEiffel, as part of the ANR SolDuGri project, which aimed to compare the performance of a traditional bituminous pavement structure withstructures reinforced by fiberglass grids. From these analyses, a probabilistic pavement design approach, aiming to extend the Frenchpavement design approach, in order to better take into account the variations of certain design parameters, to predict the service life ofpavements is proposed, and applied to the analysis of accelerated tests on pavements
