Full textIn the late middle ages the barony of montmorillon covered an area of about 1000 square kilometers and its economy (consisting mostly in breeding) was an average one in spite of the difficulties of the time. It was composed of a hundred and ten fiefs. There stood twenty seven castles. Montmorillon has got an archpriest. Fifteen castles are still standing in perfect or poor condition. Four of them were built in the xivth century, such as la ferrandiere and pruniers. The others were erected in the xvth century ; we can underline the interest of forges, bourg-archambault and champeau. Created because the people of that time were afraid, and the symbol of a social class, the castle in the montmorillon area was financed by the gentry, with the warrant of the king or without it ; built by local masters, who were themselves influenced by the ones in poitiers, it was kept by the population around. It could protect only against gangs of armed men. Standing on various sites, it has got a plan organized around a dwelling or a keep. It is a model counterpart of the great castle : an enceinte, towers, a chapel, a dwelling or a keep are to be found there ; its decoration, which is rather rich, obviously improved in the second half of the xvth century. When considered in the context of its time, the little castle can be looked upon as a building devoided of any major archeological originality in comparaison with the other countries except for one : the square keep flanked with four turrets projecting out, a type the pattern of which is the keep of vincennes and the "tour maubergeon" in poitiers. It must be neatly differentiated from the fortified house. In each of its elements (its architecture, its decoration), it is a modest duplicate of the great constructions of the late middle ages
Ferras, Catherine. "Architecture privee au xixe siecle : les "chateaux" du vignoble en bas-languedoc occidental." Montpellier 3, 1987. http://www.theses.fr/1987MON30041.
Full textThe western bas-languedoc, as in other regions in france, has witressed the proliferation of a multitude of the eve of world war one. This research tries to characterise this group of "chateaux" which fit in perfectly with the architectural ideology of the period by means of a study on styles and - what is more difficult to establish- on the architects who, for the most part are unknown or have been forgotten. This construc- tions hifghlight the vast wine-producing estates which are very often rich in history in the beziers and aude areas. Their achievement was made possible due to a specific economic phonomenon linked to the wineyards: the scourge of oidium and phylloxera which spared this area, whilst devastating the rest of the herault department, allowed beziers and narbonne to become the sole wine producers for several years during which permitted the great landowners to accumulate considerable fortunes. At the head of the true wine-producing concerns ever since, the beziers and aude upper middle classes had its urban habitations renovated and had sumptuous country dwellings built, symbols of its quasi-aristocratic power, in order to accomodate a highly fashonable lifestyle

Full textThis work has for object the study of alsatian mountain castles, confronted to siege war determined by introduction and development of fire arms. It is the study of the material frame, where we observe a certain spring of mountain castles. Their architecture isn't throw down by the new arms. Constancies subsist. Empiric modifications of the art of siege involve slow and progressive transformations of the castle. It's also the study of a political context, into wich castle is included. More than never, it is the instrument and stake of concurrent ambitions, of territories in way of strengthening and organization in the alsatian ending middle ages and beginning modern epoch. Examination of general data and more detailled approach through four significant examples (haut-koenigsbourg, haut-barr, herrenstein, schoeneck) make appear all these aspects
