Over the past three decades, the large number of diplomas and collective research projects, supported by the multiplication of preventive archaeology operations have led to a better appeciation of the middle Neolithic in Southern France. In the specific pottery and flint studies field, work on the Garonnais, the Aude valley, the Quercy, the Auvergne, the middle Rhone valley, the Alps and Provence have made it possible to better understand the chronology and the variability of the cultural expressions between 4500 and 3500 B.C. In Eastern Languedoc, a combined approach to the flint and ceramic industries was conducted from the late 1990s. Two parallel theses on both remains types were initiated, but only that on the flint industries was possible (Lea, 2002). However, a synthesis article was used for the first time to compare lithic periodization with a preliminary pottery’s seriation (Georjon and Lea, 2013).The present thesis thus corresponds to the culmination of a work initiated 20 years ago on the ceramic periodization of the Middle Neolithic in Eastern Languedoc. I selected a corpus of 11 series finely analyzed and augmented from various sets addressed more quickly. Most of these series are from my ceramic work on operations of preventive archaeology. Some are unpublished, others partially or entirely published. All the studies already carried out have been completely redone using a unified methodology. The issues developed in this thesis addresses three main aspects: the chrono-cultural and chrono-geographical approach of Eastern Languedoc in the context of the southern Middle Neolithic, the characterisation of ceramic productions and, more broadly, the overview of the Chasséen definition.Chrono-cultural and chrono-geographical issues are at the forefront: how to correlate my periodization with those that exist in the South? What is the place of Eastern Languedoc, a region with contrasting landscapes, limited to the east and west by two rivers of unequal importance (the Hérault and the Rhone) and to the north by the foothills of Massif Central, in the southern domain during this period? The treatment of this aspect is based on an accurate assessment of the archaeological contexts, composition and conservation status of the sets. A crossing of ceramic and lithic periodizations with 14C chronology is also proposed. The analysis of the means for producing the pottery is based on the technological studies available to my corpus

To the southeast of the Massif Central, East Languedoc encompasses the three French departments of Ardèche, Gard and Hérault. With nearly 1,600 listed dolmens, mostly located on small limestone plateaus, the area contains the second megalithic concentration in the country, behind the Grands Causses region. The study of dolmens is ancient, since first hypotheses concerning their function back to the early 19th century. In the south of France, they have led to the classification of graves in three typological groups (Arnal 1963; Chevalier 1984). It appears, from recent publications, an embarrassment to adhere fully to the three main types, without questioning them. Therefore, the first fruits of our reflection included a number of questions regarding the adequacy of the current type and the state of knowledge in the west of the Rhone. The central issue of our work has been on the one hand to demonstrate expertise megalithic and secondly to try to resolve issues of chronology and cultural affiliation of Languedoc graves. In this context, we explored the monuments through three main axes. The first took the form of morphological and comparative analysis of dolmens, freed of typological presupposition. The second led us to bring the interrogation in the field of techniques. The recognition of the choices made by the builders can trace megalithic operating chain and identify possible differences in cultural. The third view is the symbolic implications of the choice of the orientation of the grave. The reasons which led to favor a particular orientation seem indeed related to worship or environmental factors, or a combination of these factors

Through the study of many rotary grinders from archaeological excavations conducted in recent years in the South East of France, Languedoc-Roussillon and Provence, we propose a classification of major types of grain mills used in these regions between the fourth century BC and the twelfth century AD. According to the period, the hand mills were used substantially or marginally. In this second case, large mills for common use replaced them. Some functionned in hydraulic systems, others towed by men or beasts, are illustrated by the Pompeian mills built in the vicinity of Orvieto in Italy and widely distributed in Narbonne in the Empire. We also examine great millstone quarries from which a significant part of the millstones studied come from. One of them, the millstone quarry of Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie Gard, has left beautiful traces revealing a very rational organization of quarrying. Dating from late antiquity, it ranks at a time when the wheels of sandstone and conglomerate succeeded to those prevailing in volcanic rock in the second Iron Age

In eastern Languedoc, during the late Neolithic, there has been a significant increase in prehistoric settlements, especially in the late Neolithic 3 (Fontbouisse culture). This area has been divided in cultural facies, mainly on the basis of ceramic production (Gutherz, 1975; 1990). Research has mostly focused on the garrigue’s dry stone villages from the 1950s to the early 1990s. Indeed, from those years, archaeological surveys have focused in plain, on ditch system settlements over several hectares. The abundant ceramicware deserved further analysis. This work will focus on several plain ceramic series dated to late Neolithic 3. The massive amount of ceramicware will make it possible to assess whether patterns in ceramic production can be observed. The value of this work is twofold: outline stylistic trends emerging from the sets studied, use the context of stratigraphic successions of fillings to refine the chronology of ceramic production and its evolution during late Neolithic 3

Our thesis in medieval history and archeology concerns the silver mining enterprises (lead, copper, zinc, silver) of the 11th-15th centuries in eastern Languedoc (départements 07, 48, 30, 34, 12). They are analyzed with a technical history approach in order to articulate the process of production with the social organization of work and to question the links that these firms maintain with the authorities

Either in occidental Languedoc or in the Mid-Ebro Valley, during Protohistory, classic literature and archeologic artefacts testify contacts between Celtic and Iberian populations. The aim of this study is to build tools and methods in order to process palaeohispanic epigraphic data and to compare practical details of using levantine script and iberan language in both areas. After reviewing latest works about these subjects and studying the anthoponymy written in palaeohispanic script of three major sites (Azaila, Ensérune and Ullastret), this epigraphy is put back in its archaeological context, first on each site and then in the epigraphic interface areas. This investigation allows to specify the kind of contacts that existed between Celts and Iberians and how did they use writing in these occasions
