Abstract:
The last few years have seen an increasingly infected public debate about the appearance of contemporary buildings. Regardless of where one personally stands, this ought to be cause for architects to examine their own understanding of aesthetics. This project is an exercise in articulating and examining questions of architectural form. The project is divided into three parts; Theory, Observation, and Design. The first aims to establish a broad overview of the theoretical discourse surrounding the subject of aesthetics in architecture, as well as formulate a position within it. The second part is an observation of aesthetic experiences in practice, in which three existing works of architecture are broken down into component formal properties, and the experiences these evoke are put into words. The final part is an exercise in articulating the reasoning behind aesthetic design decisions. A small self-imposed design task serves as the catalyst for a sequence of explicitly formulated and documented design choices, leading from inception to finished design.

Abstract:
My thesis is a science fiction novella. It follows the story of an adolescent boy, Shadow, and a little girl, Makebelieve, in an ahistorical future. The world that they traverse is earth, after being nursed back to health, by technologically advanced Southern African societies. A series of inexplicable astronomical events leads to their being hunted down. Through the travels of Shadow and Makebelieve I show how the world and the societies around them operate. I am inspired by Samuel R Delaney’s Aye, Gomorrah and Derrick Bell’s The Space Traders, because of their prowess in world building and exploration of complex and innovative ideas.

Haeussler, Doyle L. "Chasing losses : a book of poems." Virtual Press, 2003. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1260489.

Full text
Abstract:
This work presents a collection of creative verse written in both classical forms, e.g., sonnet, pantoum, haiku, tanka, sestina, prose poem, and blank verse, as well as open form pieces. Examples of both narrative and lyrical verse are represented, with an emphasis on the narrative craft as well as an exploration of the lyrical forms in the context of contemporary and historical themes. While the theme of loss, in all its aspects, is present throughout, it is present as a geist rather than as a dictum. These poems have as their subject matter a wide range of experiences, both imaginative and commonplace, both familiar and magical. Mundane situations are elevated to the level of emotional consideration, and the overwhelming is reduced to familiar and intimate terms. These poems deal largely with the resilience of the human spirit and the buoyancy of hope despite the roiling seas of uncertainty and the unpredictable winds of change.

Parke, Erin. "Chasing Zebras: Rediscovering Identity After Illness." Scholar Commons, 2016. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/6561.

Full text
Abstract:
This autoethnographic study focuses on changing identity after experiencing a rare disease. The purpose of this study was to examine the ways in which identity shifts during an after a rare illness. Three research questions guided this study: How and in what ways has my identity as a teacher shifted as a result of my experience with major illness? How and in what ways have other aspects of my identity shifted as a result of my illness? How can the writing of my autoethnography influence the healing process and my understanding of identity? The participant/researcher of this study was hospitalized with anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis, and subsequently lost her position as a high school teacher and was forced to find a position at a new school. Using Gee’s (2000/2001) concept of identity as an analytic lens, the researcher developed a narrative of her journey from illness back into the classroom. After analysis, she identified a transition from a traditional, knowledge-giver teacher role to the role of teacher as a facilitator. Another finding was the role confidence played in the recovery process. The researcher then offers suggestions for further research regarding teachers who return to the classroom after illness.

Adams, Tegan Joan. "Chasing fossil fuels in the food system." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/37198.

Full text
Abstract:
A carbon tax has already been introduced in British Columbia, Canada. It is likely that other carbon regulations will come into play across the globe shortly. In all likelihood, with the introduction of a domestic agreement pricing emissions, there will be border tax adjustment or other similar policy response proposed. For example, as the European Union (EU) enters the next development phases for their Emissions Trading System, a border adjustment on GHG emissions, also known as a “Border Carbon Adjustment” (BCA) (Fisher and Fox 2009) is being considered. It may work to displace concerns related to domestic competitiveness and carbon leakage from the trade of outsourced goods (including for example food, clothing and cars). In the absence of an international agreement to account for monitoring, pricing or capping GHG emissions, Canada’s response to GHG emissions or Carbon regulations is challenging policy makers. This thesis explores the feasibility of implementing a BCA on a sample of whole foods imported to Canada. It uses numerical industry trade data to create a snapshot of hypothetical Carbon Tariff estimates that reflect GHG emissions from the production and transport of a sample of whole foods imported to Canada. It investigates methods for accounting GHG emissions, trade legalities in the food system and the idealized characteristics of BCA design; it concludes by suggesting a BCA or any other policy tool reliant on GHGe accounting standards could not easily or effectively be implemented as a worthwhile or counteracting response to potential undesirable effects of domestic carbon regulations in any country at this time (2011). Finally, this paper recommends future research in the areas of GHGe accounting standards, food system transparency, product labeling and municipal policy tools as means of reducing GHGe from food production, while avoiding the repercussions of carbon regulations.

Abstract:
This work is a conceptual analysis of certain recent developments in the mathematical foundations of Classical and Quantum Mechanics which have allowed to formulate both theories in a common language. From the algebraic point of view, the set of observables of a physical system, be it classical or quantum, is described by a Jordan-Lie algebra. From the geometric point of view, the space of states of any system is described by a uniform Poisson space with transition probability. Both these structures are here perceived as formal translations of the fundamental two fold role of properties in Mechanics: they are at the same time quantities and transformations. The question becomes then to understand the precise articulation between these two roles. The analysis will show that Quantum Mechanics canbe thought as distinguishing itself from Classical Mechanics by a compatibility condition between properties-as-quantities and properties-as-transformations. Moreover, this dissertation shows the existence of a tension between a certain ‘abstractway’ of conceiving mathematical structures, used in the practice of mathematical physics, and the necessary capacity to specify particular states or observables. It then becomes important to understand how, within the formalism, one can construct a labelling scheme. The “Chasefor Individuation” is the analysis of diferent mathematical techniques which attempt to overcome this tension. In particular, we discuss how group theory furnishes a partial solution

The advent of time-domain and multimessenger astronomy opens new perspectives to study the most energetic phenomena of our universe, and understand the mysterious origins of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECR) and high-energy (HE) neutrinos. Cosmic rays appear as key players in the production of non-thermal and, more generally, multimessenger emissions. In this thesis, we develop several analytical and numerical tools to study the acceleration and interactions of cosmic rays in the vicinity of energetic sources. As HE neutrinos are clear signatures of these processes, we study the detectability of HE neutrino flares from transient sources. We identify two interesting categories of sources, namely pulsars and tidal disruption events. We show with particle-in-cell simulations that pulsars can accelerate high-energy cosmic rays. We demonstrate that a population of millisecond pulsars located in the Galactic bulge can explain the di↵use gamma-ray emission observed by the HESS detector. Moreover, an extragalactic population of tidal disruptions by massive black holes powering relativistic jets can reproduce the spectrum and composition of UHECRs measured by the Auger experiment, but cannot produce the HE neutrinos detected by the IceCube experiment. Finally, we participate to the development of novel techniques that aim at detecting and reconstructing the properties of very-high-energy (VHE) neutrinos and UHECRs, in the context of the POEMMA and GRAND projects

Smith, Paul. "Chasing yesterday : nowcasting economic activity with timely indicators." Thesis, University of Strathclyde, 2016. http://oleg.lib.strath.ac.uk:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=26537.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis Chasing Yesterday: Nowcasting Economic Activity with Timely Indicators presents three separate essays rooted in the topic of nowcasting that have been written since 2013. A variety of research themes drawn from the nowcasting literature are covered, with the essays pulled together through an underlying link of the usefulness of timely economic indicators to policymakers, investors and researchers. Following an introduction to nowcasting and the broad research themes covered in the thesis, Chapter 2 is titled "The Importance of Being Timely", a version of which has been recently published in the Journal of Forecasting. The research in the chapter is concerned with understanding the contribution quickly-released survey data make to tracking economic activity in nowcasting models. Generally speaking, policymakers want to know about real-time economy performance. However, closely watched macroeconomic time series produced by national statistics offices are published infrequently, with a time lag and are subject to revision. Such issues create uncertainty in tracking economic developments, a by-product of which is to raise the value of business and consumer surveys. Although providing less granularity than official data series, the surveys are released in a timelier manner and are generally not revised. Using real-time data sourced from the Deutsche Bundesbank, the OECD and the Office for National Statistics, an assessment of the role that the popular and widely used Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) play in reducing forecasting errors in a simple "nowcasting" framework is undertaken. The empirical exercise is conducted for five developed economies and also covers the period of the Great Recession. The conclusion is clear: timing matters. The third chapter "Nowcasting UK GDP during the Depression" reviews the performance of several statistical techniques in nowcasting preliminary estimates of UK GDP, particularly during the recent depression. Traditional bridging equations, MIDAS regressions and factor models are all considered. While there are various theoretical differences and perceived advantages for each technique, replicated real-time out-of-sample testing shows that, in practice, there is in fact little to choose between methods in terms of end-of-period nowcasting accuracy. The analysis also reveals that none of the aforementioned statistical models can consistently beat a consensus of professional economists in nowcasting preliminary GDP estimates. This inability of statistical models to beat the consensus may reflect several factors, one of which is the revisions and re-appraisal of trends inherent in UK GDP statistics. The suggestion is that these changes impact on observed relationships between GDP and indicator variables such as business surveys, which impairs nowcasting performance. Indeed, using a synthetic series based purely on observed preliminary GDP estimates, which introduces stability to the target variable series, the nowcasting accuracy of regressions including closely-watched PMI data is improved by 25-40 percentage points relative to a naive benchmark. The final research chapter, "Google's MIDAS Touch: Predicting UK Unemployment with Internet Search Data", a version of which is due to be published in the Journal of Forecasting, changes tack somewhat by assessing the potential of internet search data as a useful source of information for policymakers when formulating decisions based on their understanding of the current economic environment. The chapter builds on earlier literature and the ideas generated in chapters 2 and 3 via a structured value assessment of the data provided by Google Trends. This is done through two empirical exercises related to the forecasting of changes in UK unemployment. Firstly, economic intuition provides the basis for search term selection, with a resulting Google indicator tested alongside survey-based variables in a traditional forecasting environment. Secondly, this environment is expanded into a pseudo-time nowcasting framework which provides the backdrop for assessing the timing advantage that Google data have over surveys. The framework is underpinned by a MIDAS regression which allows, for the first time, the easy incorporation of internet search data at its true sampling rate into a nowcast model for predicting unemployment.

Abstract:

In the spring of 2009 we spent five weeks in Mozambique performing a field study. Four of the weeks were spent in Nampula province in the northern part of the country, where most of the Mozambican cashew is produced. In the 1970s Mozambique was world leading in cashew kernel export, however, today the industry is a shadow of its former self. Since the end of the 1990s, the government along with other stakeholders, are trying to recuperate the industry. There are a great deal of obstacles to overcome to be able to compete with other large exporting countries such as India, Vietnam and Brazil. The main issue is the conditions of the trees; the majority of the trees are over forty years old and therefore have a low cashew yield. In addition, poor maintenance of the trees further decreases the production. Other problems are the infrastructure, in particular roads in poor condition, difficulties in locating markets and the income gap between the producer and end retailer.

During our research we have thought of a few recommendations which we feel would be worth looking into. We feel cheaper seedling should be available for the producers and nurseries should be put more locally for easier access. We also recommend spraying of the trees to be done more frequently. Furthermore a prerequisite for an expansion of the cashew industry is an investment in the infrastructure, to be able to transport the cashew from producer to processor and exporter. This would also improve life quality of the people in general. In addition, an investment in the poorest is necessary for the development of the country, a tool for achieving this could be better access to micro credits and village banks. To increase the income generated from Mozambican cashew kernels we recommend focusing the export on Fair Trade and possibly the organic market since they provide higher prices. A possibility to locating new markets would be an office, possibly in Europe, in order to be closer to the costumers. Another income generating market could be the market for by-products such as Cashew Nut Shell Liquid, cashew oil and juice and jam from the fruit.

Abstract:
This qualitative study of Youth Training (YT) is centred specifically around the experiences of trainee professional footballers. Presenting a case-study analysis of one professional English Football League club, it utilizes those methods of sociological enquiry traditionally associated with ethnography (i.e. participant observation, unstructured interviews, and documentary analysis) in order to explore the day-to-day lives of the individuals concerned. The study depicts the way in which YT recruits are socialized into professional football club culture and how their career expectations and aspirations are subsequently shaped by the detailed complexities of institutional experience. In turn, it looks at how trainees learn to adapt to their chosen occupational position, and uncovers their attitudes towards such diverse topics as educational attendance, inter-personal relations and masculine construction. Set against the historical development of football apprenticeship within England, the work examines the impact of new vocational policy upon the football industry as a whole and portrays the role of the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) - and its subsidiary body The Footballers' Further Education and Vocational Training Society (FFE & VTS) - in relation to the implementation of YT provision. To this end, it attempts to determine the extent to which modern-day forms of football traineeship differ from those methods of indenture employed in previous years. At the same time, the study provides insight into the personal and social lives of the trainees in question. Notably issues of class, sexuality and gender are raised in terms of individual experience and interpretation. Furthermore, the influence of club officials is also considered in relation to the pressures, pitfalls and constraints of trainee development.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines 'sovereignty' as not only a theoretical abstraction of power relations within finite territories, but also as a very alive practice, a daily defense of inherent rights based on Indigenous philosophical notions of power and space. I examine the perspectives of Indigenous practitioners who either through their conversations and/or life ways cultivate an original conception of sovereignty, specifically the governance of the Gwich'in people, a nation of 15 villages in the Arctic Circle. As an Indigenous nation living within legal structures of a settler state, they offer an alternative understanding of collective political power, rooted outside the western European paradigm but simultaneously confronting those ambits. I argue that rather than an alternative narrative of resistance towards secession or segregation, the Gwich'in Nation provide a viable, pro-active and realized form of co-existent sovereignty. This sovereignty is a form of political collective identity and a relationship with the environment and non-human actors, as well as other governments, that is productive, creative and focused as much on future generations as drawing from tradition.

Abstract:
Abstract. Technologists, designers and researcher are constantly working towards digitization of physical materials. Consumers today can read and display books on virtual bookshelves; access news from around the world instantly on their smartphone; archive and share photos with their friends on social media platforms. This represents both a gain and a loss for the consumers: losing the joy and meaning of physical objects but gaining the immediacy, dynamism, and accessibility of the digital. Users have to constantly navigate between their physical environment and digital objects. The industry treats these the physical and the digital experiences separately and this creates a tension for interaction and complicated user’s understanding of products and services rooted in the physical. Designers end up designing disjointed experiences for their users as there is no existing framework in the community to help designers span this divide. In this master’s thesis project I seek to understand if Critical Design can be used as a design method to investigate the digital–physical divide. Further, I use critical design to explore the design opportunities associated with the digital–physical divide by creating and deploying a probe in two libraries in Pittsburgh. Library patrons were interviewed post interaction with the probe. Findings are presented in this document.

Abstract:
Music Composition
D.M.A.
Chasing Yiddishkayt: Music for Accordion, Klezmorim Concertino, Strings, and Percussion is a four-movement composition that combines the idioms of klezmer music with aspects of serialism. I aimed to infuse the piece with a sense of yiddishkayt: a recognizable, rooted Jewishness. In order to accomplish this goal, I based each movement on a different klezmer style. I used the improvisatory-style of the Romanian Jewish doina as the foundation for Movement 1. For Movements 2 through 4 I selected tunes from the 1927 Hoffman Manuscript-a fake-book assembled by Joseph Hoffman in Philadelphia for his son, Morris-as the starting point in my process, and also for the generation of pitch material. Each movement places the tunes in a different serialist context through the use of abstraction, manipulation and regeneration. The orchestration of the composition is designed as a modified a concerto structure that alternates between featuring the accordion and contrasting the klezmorim concertino (fiddle, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, tuba, and accordion) with the orchestra. Depending on the context, the percussion section functions as part of the concertino and the orchestra. In the monograph, I place the composition in a historical and musical context. In Chapter 1, I trace my travels to Kraków, Poland for the Jewish Culture Festival, where I began to explore and understand the intricate language of this music. In Chapter 2, I provide a summary of the history of klezmer music by looking at it through the context of a musical style that has developed across regional and cultural boundaries, and has drawn influences as far and wide as the Turkish maqam system in Constantinople, to the Moldavian Roms (Gypsies), to czarist Military bands, to jazz and swing, and to rock and roll. I conclude the chapter with a brief survey of four contemporary klezmer musicians of the new generation. In Chapter 3, I look at the modal structure of klezmer music. I used the work of Joshua Horowitz as the starting point for my research on various modal progressions and tetrachords. I then applied this research by analyzing a set of thirty freilechs in the Hoffman manuscript. In Chapter 4, I present an analysis of my composition as well as historical background for the tunes that I used as source material. I outline my future research goals in Chapter 5.

Abstract:

Risky decisions are inherently characterized by the potential to receive gains and losses from these choices, and gains and losses have distinct effects on global risky choice behavior and the likelihoods of making risky choices depending on the outcome of the previous choice. One translationally-relevant phenomenon of risky choice is loss-chasing, in which individuals make risky choices following losses. However, the mechanisms of loss-chasing are poorly understood. The goal of two experiments was to illuminate the mechanisms governing individual differences in loss-chasing and risky choice behaviors. In two experiments, rats chose between a certain outcome that always delivered reward and a risky outcome that probabilistically delivered reward. In Experiment 1, loss processing and loss-chasing behavior were assessed in the context of losses-disguised-as-wins (LDWs), or loss outcomes presented along with gain-related stimuli. The rats presented with LDWs were riskier and less sensitive to differential losses. In Experiment 2, these behaviors were assessed relative to the number of risky losses that could be experienced. Here, the addition of reward omission or a small non-zero loss to the possible risky outcomes elicited substantial individual differences in risky choice, with some rats increasing, decreasing, or maintaining their previous risky choice preferences. Several reinforcement learning (RL) models were fit to individual rats’ data to elucidate the possible psychological mechanisms that best accounted for individual differences in risky choice and loss-chasing behaviors. The RL analyses indicated that the critical predictors of risky choice and loss-chasing behavior were the different rates that individuals updated value estimates with newly experienced gains and losses. Thus, learning deficits may predict individual differences in maladaptive risky decision making. Accordingly, targeted interventions to alleviate learning deficits may ultimately increase the likelihood of making more optimal and informed choices.

In this thesis, we take the first steps towards measuring the fluctuations in HI emission before reionization which carry information on the first X-ray emitting compact objects and hot interstellar gas heated by the deaths of the first stars (ancient demons). First, we show that existing and planned interferometers are sensitive enough to place interesting constraints on the astrophysics of X-ray heating. Second, we obtain first upper limits on the pre-reionization fluctuations with the Murchison Widefield Array. We also use these measurements to explore the impact of low-frequency systematics, such as increased foreground brightness and the ionosphere. We discover that contamination by fine-scale frequency structure introduced by the instrument is the leading obstacle to measuring the 21 cm power spectrum before reionization. This motivates the design of a next-generation experiment, HERA, with acceptable levels of intrinsic spectral structure. We also perform a careful examination of whether traditional calibration strategies are sufficient to suppress instrumental spectral structure. We find that while existing calibration techniques have critical flaws, there exist promising strategies to overcome these deficiencies which we are now pursuing.

Abstract:
Responsible Sourcing is gaining growing importance for companies willing to demonstrate responsibility and commitment to sustainable practices. Sourcing is a key element of supply chain management and by adopting responsible sourcing practices, companies can greatly contribute to the sustainability of their entire supply chains. Being close to both customers and suppliers, retailers hold a particularly influential position in the supply chain and their sourcing choices can play a key role for sustainability improvements. This paper investigates the different strategies that can be adopted to guarantee responsible sourcing in the retail sector, through the specific case study of two UK retailers, Sainsbury´s and Tesco, and their offer of sustainable seafood. Specifically, the relation between the offer of MSC certified products and the retailers´ commitment to source responsibly is here analysed. The main source of data collection is a content analysis of retailers´ CSR online reports and web pages. Additional information is obtained through reports and web pages’ analysis of four UK organizations dealing with sustainable seafood issues. The findings of the study suggest that the offer of MSC certified products is positively correlated with the adoption of responsible sourcing practices; different strategies are available to retailers to guarantee responsible sourcing and that retailers´ sourcing policies can be influenced by other stakeholders´ guidelines for responsible sourcing.

Abstract:
Purchasing has gone from an administrative task to a strategic activity. As such, firms adopt purchasing as a corporate function to set up rules and processes in order to standardize how purchasing is to be carried out by business units. This has the benefit of consolidating spend towards a fewer number of suppliers to be used throughout the entire organization and achieve great cost savings on a corporate level. Not complying to these rules and processes, however, will offset the benefits associated with strategic purchasing. A consequence of non-compliance is a large supply base which should not be the case if established processes are followed. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the procurement process of a Swedish multinational organization in a case study setting, which applies strategic purchasing whilst reporting a large supply base. Hence, the authors aim to identify the main challenge in the procurement process. Additionally, this thesis seeks to find an explanation to the challenge by identifying the underlying contributing factors. The main challenge was discovered to be Maverick Buying, a phenomenon limited in research. Maverick Buying is the off-contract purchasing of goods and services and therefore bypass established processes, rules, and selected suppliers. At the case company four forms of Maverick Buying was found where the underlying factors contributing to them were communication, structures, purchasing tools, involvement, control mechanisms, and lack of understanding the procurement process. This thesis contributes to a greater understanding of the phenomenon and what causes its existence.

Abstract:
Utilizing a social construction perspective, this study uses a mixed method approach to examine the opioid epidemic. The study begins by identifying the numerous claims-making groups along with conducting a content analysis of the rhetoric and symbols used to legitimize the claims about the opioid epidemic. The data for the content analysis was obtained through a search of the websites, newsrooms, and pressrooms of claims-making groups. Additionally, the study examines and assesses the volume of money that is generated and allocated towards opioid research and prevention in an effort to determine who has more power to influence the policy initiatives. Findings show that the frequency of rhetoric and the number of claims-making groups releasing information about the opioid epidemic increased from 2010-2016. Most of the rhetoric consists of groups proposing resolution strategies and formulating new policies. Only a few claims-makers are making financial contributions towards opioid prevention initiatives and in most cases, it is a very small amount of money.

Jones, Timothy Andrew. "Chasing the vote : developments in the ways political parties conduct election campaigns." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/373.

Full text
Abstract:
The methods political parties use to engage the electorate during election campaigns undergo a continual process of re-evaluation and modification; this study seeks to further understanding of this process by proposing the concept of a toolkit of techniques from which those who plan campaigns make selections, based on the type of campaign and the resources they have available. Using data gathered from interviews of experienced campaigners, a case study from the 2007 local elections, and the author's own experience as a political campaigner, the development of campaigning is considered from the perspective of the candidate and campaigner 'on the ground'. Three main drivers of change are considered: increasing levels of partisan dealignment and a decline in party membership, the opportunities that technological innovations have afforded, and regulatory change. The development of new communication channels and the ease of accessibility to sophisticated technology are changing the basic processes of electioneering. Several of the new techniques now gaining favour place less emphasis on the need for face-to-face communication, allowing 'campaigning at a distance'. New data manipulation techniques allow campaigners to target voters in more precise ways, using personalised literature, email and the internet. Greater dependence on technology has led to the role of central party organisations becoming more dominant; many of the new approaches are also more costly than traditional methods, raising concerns about the abilities of minor parties and independent candidates to campaign on equal terms. The introduction of on-demand postal voting has introduced a second peak of activity during a campaign, moving the focus of an election away from a single polling day and creating a period of uncertainty in the final days of a campaign.

Wiseman, Andrew E. M. "Chasing the deer : hunting iconography, literature and tradition of the Scottish Highlands." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/29423.

Full text
Abstract:
Hunting inspired some of the greatest songs and stories of Gaelic literature and tradition - a theme which runs from the earliest Old Irish sources down to the literature of Modern Scottish Gaelic. This thesis examines the cultural history of hunting in the Scottish Highlands stemming from the late-medieval period through to the early modern. The three main areas covered are the iconography, literature and tradition of the chase. Many hunting topoi appear upon late-medieval west Highland sculptures, remarkably similar to those on earlier Pictish sculpture, which are complimented by the Gaelic literature and lore of hunting contained within Fenian ballads and narrative stories. The apogee of Gaelic hunting motifs are contained within panegyric poetry and verse of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, sustained in the main by a late manifestation of an heroic age. Such imagery reinforced and perpetuated the identity of the chief as the paragon of pre-modern Gaelic society, who was always seen as a hunter-warrior. Hunting themes and motifs are also prevalent within Gaelic folksong tradition. Although this overlaps in terms of content with the bardic imagery of professional poets, the vernacular folksongs offer a more emotive and direct response to moments of crisis or celebration. The scale of these great hunts in the Highlands, borne out by the literary evidence, from the medieval period onwards, reflects a complex matrix of power, patronage, politics and ultimately propaganda. As well as being a surrogate for war the tinchel, in Gaelic terms, was a seasonal mobilising of the sluagh, or host, who followed the fine, the Gaelic nobility. This enhanced their status while reinforcing clan solidarity in a shared symbol of sporting endeavour, by chasing the noble quarry of the deer. Notable, also, is illegal, or covert hunting which masked a complex deer-culture, and marked the familiar tension of exploiting natural resources by the many against the privileged few who tried to implement their inherited rights to hunt. Inevitably, superstition pervades much of the traditions of the hunt, as it would in any given belief system centred upon age-old customs. Hunting was an integral part of European culture, and it was a theme reflected in Gaelic literature, song, and tradition more evidently than in many other European cultures of a comparable period. This was because it reinforced strongly and perpetuated the idealised image of a warrior-hunter, the archetypal leader engendered within Gaelic cultural identity.

Full text
Abstract:
We have obtained new images of the protoplanetary disk orbiting TW Hya in visible, total intensity light with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), using the newly commissioned BAR5 occulter. These HST/STIS observations achieved an inner working angle of similar to 0."2, or 11.7 au, probing the system at angular radii coincident with recent images of the disk obtained by ALMA and in polarized intensity near-infrared light. By comparing our new STIS images to those taken with STIS in 2000 and with NICMOS in 1998, 2004, and 2005, we demonstrate that TW Hya's azimuthal surface brightness asymmetry moves coherently in position angle. Between 50 au and 141 au we measure a constant angular velocity in the azimuthal brightness asymmetry of 22 degrees.7. 7 yr(-1) in a counterclockwise direction, equivalent to a period of 15.9. yr assuming circular motion. Both the (short) inferred period and lack of radial dependence of the moving shadow pattern are inconsistent with Keplerian rotation at these disk radii. We hypothesize that the asymmetry arises from the fact that the disk interior to 1 au is inclined and precessing owing to a planetary companion, thus partially shadowing the outer disk. Further monitoring of this and other shadows on protoplanetary disks potentially opens a new avenue for indirectly observing the sites of planet formation.

Nagane, Sachin G. "SIMULATION STUDY OF MULTILANE SELECTIVITY BANK IN AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY." UKnowledge, 2002. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/gradschool_theses/364.

Full text
Abstract:
This study deals with a very common problem encountered in many automotive industries. Automotive companies try to level the production of different models over time based on the demands for these models in the market. In order to achieve this, they introduce a leveled stream of cars in the beginning of the production line. But because of many reasons this leveled stream gets disturbed in its course. In order to re-level the stream, buffers are used between the shops. One such buffer is called as selectivity bank and it sits between paint shop and assembly shop. This buffer receives a disturbed sequence from the paint shop. The thesis tries to develop different algorithms that can be used to discharge cars from this buffer in order to achieve better leveling in the presence of rework and assembly constraints. These algorithms continuously try to steer the system from an undesirable state to a more desirable state by keeping track of current conditions in the plant. A simulation model is developed, which gives a platform for comparing relative performance of these logics under different conditions. The simulation tool is also helpful in designing optimum size of this buffer that will result in desired leveling performance.

Harris, Khalilah M. "Chasing Equity| A Study on the Influence of Black Leaders on Federal Education Policy-making." Thesis, University of Pennsylvania, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10750932.

Full text
Abstract:

Black students are persistently underserved by public education and have had significant gaps in performance, as compared to their white counterparts, on established assessments and measures of educational attainment regardless of socio-economical background (Ladson-Billings, 2006; Milner, 2012; P. Noguera, 2013; Steele, 1992). A great deal of education policy-making at the national level in the United States is aimed at decreasing gaps in achievement between students of color and white students (Barton & Coley, 2010; Berlak, 2001; Carter, 2009; Gardner, 2007). The federal government adopted this role with the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision of 1964 and was codified through the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965.

Education reforms embedded in and promoted by federal policies are, at times, both embraced and shunned by members of the Black community (Murtadha & Watts, 2005; Scott, 2011; Warren, 2005), whose children are most readily affected based on the demographics of urban, rural and low-income communities. To cultivate equity in inputs and lasting, sustainable improvement in outcomes, members of those communities and leaders from those communities seeking to represent the voices of their community members should be involved at critical decision-making points in creating and implementing policies (Beabout & Perry, 2013; Leonardo, 2003; Warren, 2005).

Drawing on Critical Race Theory (CRT) (Dixson & Lynn, 2013; Ladson-Billings & Tate IV, 1995; Lynn & Parker, 2006) I set out to conduct a qualitative study targeted at identifying opportunities for Black people to have effective levels of influence in national education policy-making which heavily impacts their communities. I interviewed leaders active in the national education reform socio-political landscape in order to gauge their perspectives on leverage points in the process of federal education policy-making and the presence of Black voice and leadership at those critical points in the process.

CRT calls for exploration of phenomenon to the extent it can illuminate strategies to improve the conditions of a race of people (Delgado & Stefancic, 2012; Ladson-Billings, 2013; Lynn & Parker, 2006). Identifying ways in which race impacts education policy-making through examination of the narratives of those doing the work to influence those policies, can shed a light on gaps and opportunities for developing more thoughtful policies. Through inductive thematic analysis, this study mines strategies from the information shared by study participants, highlighting ways in which members of the Black community can be most effective at influencing federal education policies.

Full text
Abstract:
Late twentieth-century discourses regarding deaf people and sign language provide the theoretical background for investigating early modern families with hereditary deafness within the Kentish Weald. The first of its kind, this thesis described the methods used to ascertain the presence of sufficient numbers of networked deaf people to maintain natural sign language. A source-driven work, it began with two data sources - a list generated by previous American genealogical research of the first known European-American deaf families originating from seventeenth-century Kent and the 1851 Census of Great Britain, a previously unexplored resource of the first attempt to fully enumerate deaf people in Britain. This thesis was based on an analysis of primary documentation and a critical reading of previous primary and secondary sources seeking to connect the two initial sources. Its framework was predicated on a stance that acknowledges and values deaf culture and its embodied performed manifestation, sign language. Examining the discourses surrounding deaf people throughout the period, it relied upon the concepts of representation, individual identity, and group identity to query the existence of a deaf group identity predating the labels used to describe it.

Nyiri, Borbala. "Chasing dragons through time and space : martabani dragon jars in the Kelabit highlands, Sarawak, East Malaysia." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/39176.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores how a special group of objects, referred to as dragon jars in Southeast Asia, cross cultural and geographical boundaries and acquire new meanings within different social and temporal settings. The object biographical approach serves as the main theoretical framework for the dragon jar enquiry within which the complex histories of jars are revealed and a closer study of object-agency takes place. The mosaic of jar biographies is investigated through the dual methodologies of anthropology and archaeology recovering information which may otherwise have remained difficult to interpret from a singular disciplinary perspective. Dragon jars ‒ or Martabans or Martavans as they are referred to in specialist literature ‒ are large stoneware vessels, decorated with a pair of eponymous dragons. The manufacture of these objects can be traced back to the workshops of southern China, where jars were first produced to service the burgeoning early global maritime trade. Their primary function was to contain fresh water and consumables on long sea-journeys and to serve as non-permeable packaging materials for commodities. However, as soon as dragon jars reached Southeast Asian shores, not only their contents but the jars themselves became sought-after items by indigenous communities. Here, dragon jars were transformed into local symbols of status and ritual paraphernalia while acquiring new meanings, taking on magical, even human-like properties. The case study area is located in the remote Kelabit highlands of Borneo (East Malaysia), where 230 jars dating from the 17th to 20th centuries were recorded in mortuary contexts and domestic settings. The thesis investigates how jars were incorporated into indigenous funerary practices and commensal feasting events, and explores the spiritual roles of dragon jars. A large influx of jars in the late 19th and early 20th century documented in the archaeological assemblage was interpreted with regard to the wider political, economic, and religious changes that took place during the transition from pre-colonial, to colonial, and then post-colonial periods. Dragon jars further serve as the means for an object-focused enquiry to unravel the complex relationship between jars and their Kelabit counterparts, and contribute to broader theoretical debates on material culture in shifting spatio-temporal and religious contexts.

Abstract:
This thesis is written as a response to a movement within contemporary scholarship that has tried to date Qoheleth to the Persian period rather than to the more generally-accepted Ptolemaic period. In Part 1 of the thesis I examine the arguments that have been put forward in favour of a Persian date. I look at five areas which provide evidence for dating Qoheleth. These are: Qoheleth's place in the Israelite wisdom tradition; literary parallels between Qoheleth and other Ancient Near Eastern and Greek texts; linguistic characteristics of Qoheleth; the political history of the time; and the archaeological data which derives from the period in which Qoheleth is said to have been written. Having examined each of these areas, I conclude that the commonly-held date of the third century B.C.E. remains the most likely setting for the text. Part 2 of the thesis then seeks to appropriate methodological insights gained from studies that have argued for a Persian date and apply these insights to the Ptolemaic period. In particular, I try to build on recent studies that have looked at Qoheleth from a socio-economic perspective. I concentrate on those passages in Qoheleth that address aspects of public life. I look at Qoheleth's remarks about the King, Government Administration and Bureaucracy, the Judicial System, the Temple, and the Social Hierarchy, in order to assess the manner in which his remarks were influenced by contemporary circumstance and events. The thesis concludes by arguing that Qoheleth wrote as one who was critically engaged with his society, commenting on many aspects of its life and governance, and did so to an extent that has not fully recognised by previous studies on the book.

Abstract:
Today's society is a vulnerable society. Climate change and social injustices are genuine threats to how the lives of future generations are going to be, and humans are the cause of these problems. Sustainable development needs to be achieved if we want future generations to have a good and dignified existence. Companies have a significant impact on society, and therefore play an essential role in how successful we are in achieving sustainable development. Past research has found that control systems, especially reward systems, can be important to implement sustainability in companies. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to get a deeper understanding of how organizations implement and steer sustainability by including it in their control systems, and particularly, how reward systems are used in the context of sustainability. By studying past research and theories regarding sustainable development, management control, performance measurements and reward systems, we have gained knowledge and an understanding of how these areas are connected. To achieve the purpose of this study, a qualitative study was done in which we conducted eleven semi-structured interviews with managers and sustainability experts from six different companies. Based on the empirical findings of the study, we were able to make several conclusions. First, sustainability is integrated into already existing control systems, which often interact and are related to each other, and we found that there is a balance between social and environmental dimensions. Companies choose to focus on sustainability issues were they have the most negative impact, and they include sustainability mostly in their cybernetic and administrative controls, for instance through performance measurements (KPIs) and policy documents. Also, several companies incorporate sustainability into their reward systems, such as rewards for safety parameters and reducing CO² emissions. What kind of rewards that are given for sustainability performance differ, some companies give monetary rewards while other give non-monetary. Non-monetary rewards are in the findings presented as most valuable for sustainability. We can also conclude that there are challenges with rewarding sustainability, but many respondents have overcome them and use reward systems as a way of implementing sustainability. Those who do not reward sustainability today can imagine doing so in the near future.
