Abstract:
The last few years have seen an increasingly infected public debate about the appearance of contemporary buildings. Regardless of where one personally stands, this ought to be cause for architects to examine their own understanding of aesthetics. This project is an exercise in articulating and examining questions of architectural form. The project is divided into three parts; Theory, Observation, and Design. The first aims to establish a broad overview of the theoretical discourse surrounding the subject of aesthetics in architecture, as well as formulate a position within it. The second part is an observation of aesthetic experiences in practice, in which three existing works of architecture are broken down into component formal properties, and the experiences these evoke are put into words. The final part is an exercise in articulating the reasoning behind aesthetic design decisions. A small self-imposed design task serves as the catalyst for a sequence of explicitly formulated and documented design choices, leading from inception to finished design.

Mofokeng, Reikanne. "Chasing shadow and make believe." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/63626.

Full text
Abstract:
My thesis is a science fiction novella. It follows the story of an adolescent boy, Shadow, and a little girl, Makebelieve, in an ahistorical future. The world that they traverse is earth, after being nursed back to health, by technologically advanced Southern African societies. A series of inexplicable astronomical events leads to their being hunted down. Through the travels of Shadow and Makebelieve I show how the world and the societies around them operate. I am inspired by Samuel R Delaney’s Aye, Gomorrah and Derrick Bell’s The Space Traders, because of their prowess in world building and exploration of complex and innovative ideas.

Haeussler, Doyle L. "Chasing losses : a book of poems." Virtual Press, 2003. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1260489.

Full text
Abstract:
This work presents a collection of creative verse written in both classical forms, e.g., sonnet, pantoum, haiku, tanka, sestina, prose poem, and blank verse, as well as open form pieces. Examples of both narrative and lyrical verse are represented, with an emphasis on the narrative craft as well as an exploration of the lyrical forms in the context of contemporary and historical themes. While the theme of loss, in all its aspects, is present throughout, it is present as a geist rather than as a dictum. These poems have as their subject matter a wide range of experiences, both imaginative and commonplace, both familiar and magical. Mundane situations are elevated to the level of emotional consideration, and the overwhelming is reduced to familiar and intimate terms. These poems deal largely with the resilience of the human spirit and the buoyancy of hope despite the roiling seas of uncertainty and the unpredictable winds of change.

Parke, Erin. "Chasing Zebras: Rediscovering Identity After Illness." Scholar Commons, 2016. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/6561.

Full text
Abstract:
This autoethnographic study focuses on changing identity after experiencing a rare disease. The purpose of this study was to examine the ways in which identity shifts during an after a rare illness. Three research questions guided this study: How and in what ways has my identity as a teacher shifted as a result of my experience with major illness? How and in what ways have other aspects of my identity shifted as a result of my illness? How can the writing of my autoethnography influence the healing process and my understanding of identity? The participant/researcher of this study was hospitalized with anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis, and subsequently lost her position as a high school teacher and was forced to find a position at a new school. Using Gee’s (2000/2001) concept of identity as an analytic lens, the researcher developed a narrative of her journey from illness back into the classroom. After analysis, she identified a transition from a traditional, knowledge-giver teacher role to the role of teacher as a facilitator. Another finding was the role confidence played in the recovery process. The researcher then offers suggestions for further research regarding teachers who return to the classroom after illness.

Adams, Tegan Joan. "Chasing fossil fuels in the food system." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/37198.

Full text
Abstract:
A carbon tax has already been introduced in British Columbia, Canada. It is likely that other carbon regulations will come into play across the globe shortly. In all likelihood, with the introduction of a domestic agreement pricing emissions, there will be border tax adjustment or other similar policy response proposed. For example, as the European Union (EU) enters the next development phases for their Emissions Trading System, a border adjustment on GHG emissions, also known as a “Border Carbon Adjustment” (BCA) (Fisher and Fox 2009) is being considered. It may work to displace concerns related to domestic competitiveness and carbon leakage from the trade of outsourced goods (including for example food, clothing and cars). In the absence of an international agreement to account for monitoring, pricing or capping GHG emissions, Canada’s response to GHG emissions or Carbon regulations is challenging policy makers. This thesis explores the feasibility of implementing a BCA on a sample of whole foods imported to Canada. It uses numerical industry trade data to create a snapshot of hypothetical Carbon Tariff estimates that reflect GHG emissions from the production and transport of a sample of whole foods imported to Canada. It investigates methods for accounting GHG emissions, trade legalities in the food system and the idealized characteristics of BCA design; it concludes by suggesting a BCA or any other policy tool reliant on GHGe accounting standards could not easily or effectively be implemented as a worthwhile or counteracting response to potential undesirable effects of domestic carbon regulations in any country at this time (2011). Finally, this paper recommends future research in the areas of GHGe accounting standards, food system transparency, product labeling and municipal policy tools as means of reducing GHGe from food production, while avoiding the repercussions of carbon regulations.
