Abstract:

Abstract:
The Pluto-Charon system has come into sharper focus following the flyby of New Horizons. We use N-body simulations to probe the unique dynamical history of this binary dwarf planet system. We follow the evolution of the debris disc that might have formed during the Charon-forming giant impact. First, we note that in situ formation of the four circumbinary moons is extremely difficult if Charon undergoes eccentric tidal evolution. We track collisions of disc debris with Charon, estimating that hundreds to hundreds of thousands of visible craters might arise from 0.3-5 km radius bodies. New Horizons data suggesting a dearth of these small craters may place constraints on the disc properties. While tidal heating will erase some of the cratering history, both tidal and radiogenic heating may also make it possible to differentiate disc debris craters from Kuiper belt object craters. We also track the debris ejected from the Pluto-Charon system into the Solar system; while most of this debris is ultimately lost from the Solar system, a few tens of 10-30 km radius bodies could survive as a Pluto-Charon collisional family. Most are plutinos in the 3: 2 resonance with Neptune, while a small number populate nearby resonances. We show that migration of the giant planets early in the Solar system's history would not destroy this collisional family. Finally, we suggest that identification of such a family would likely need to be based on composition as they show minimal clustering in relevant orbital parameters.

Marcialis, Robert Louis. "The Pluto-Charon system as revealed during the mutual events." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/185001.

Full text
Abstract:
This year is the last of a five-year interval when the Earth passes through the orbital plane of Pluto and its satellite Charon, causing alternate transits and occultations of the satellite as seen from Earth. Spectrophotometric observations of the system made both in and out of eclipse have been obtained in the visual and near-infrared. The Pluto-Charon system is found to be compositionally diverse, a result unanticipated before the mutual events. Water frost has been identified and is ubiquitous on Charon's surface, while Pluto has a methane veneer. The spectral activity of Pluto's methane is seen to vary with rotational phase, i.e., planetary longitude. On Pluto, surface albedo appears to be correlated with composition. Dark regions tend to be redder and depleted in methane relative to bright regions. Dependence of geometric albedo with wavelength has been calculated for both bodies, from 0.4 to 2.4 μm. The albedo model of Marcialis (1983, 1988) has emerged favorably after several severe tests. Accurate radii and system bulk density derived from the mutual events have been used to construct models of phenomena unanticipated a decade ago. Charon's gravity is feeble enough that it could have shed a substantial primordial methane inventory to space and to Pluto, thereby explaining its different surface composition and lower albedo. Recent interior models are used to show that viscous relaxation of topography is expected to be significant on Pluto but not on Charon. Horizontal topographic features on the primary probably are limited in extent to less than a few tens of kilometers (or are geologically young), much as has been found subsequently for Triton. Globally, Pluto's figure is essentially hydrostatic. Astrometric observations of the system are presented, as is evidence that the discovery of Charon just seven years before the initial mutual events was not fortuitous, but most probable. The astrometry will help to refine Pluto's orbit, making prediction of future stellar occultations by the system more reliable.

Abstract:
Charon's Garden Wilderness Area within the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma is a landscape that is granted federal protection through the Wilderness Act of 1964. The discourse of wilderness management is influenced by governmental policies and practice which organize knowledge surrounding the natural landscape, like with the formation and semantics of the Wilderness Act. The Wilderness Act establishes characteristics that are designed to monitor and control the landscape and serve as a baseline and criterion for further wilderness preservation. These characteristics render the wilderness space as governable. Conservation management alternatives are identified which bypass the duality of nature from western society suggested by the discourse of environmental policy. These alternatives are understood under two notions of behaviors and perceptions. The project's goal is to uncover wilderness users' recreation behaviors and perceptions of wilderness as a designated space. Through understanding and assessing user's behaviors and perception of wilderness, alternative policies and practices that offer sustainable management practices and recreation opportunities can be developed.

Abstract:
On the moon and other airless bodies, ballistically emplaced ejecta transitions from a thinning, continuous inner deposit to become discontinuous beyond approximately one crater radius from the crater rim and can further break into discrete rays and secondary craters. In contrast, on Mars, ejecta often form continuous, distinct, and sometimes thick deposits that transition to a low ridge or escarpment that may be circular or lobate. The Martian ejecta type has been variously termed pancake, rampart, lobate, or layered, and in this work we refer to it as abrupt termini ejecta (ATE). Two main formation mechanisms have been proposed, one requiring interaction of the ejecta with the atmosphere and the other mobilization of near-surface volatiles. ATE morphologies are also unambiguously seen on Ganymede, Europa, Dione, and Tethys, but they are not as common as on Mars. We have identified up to 38 craters on Charon that show signs of ATE, including possible distal ramparts and lobate margins. These ejecta show morphologic and morphometric similarities with other moons in the solar system, which are a subset of the properties observed on Mars. From comparison of these ejecta on Charon and other solar system bodies, we find the strongest support for subsurface volatile mobilization and ejecta fluidization as the main formation mechanism for the ATE, at least on airless, icy worlds. This conclusion comes from the bodies on which they are found, an apparent preference for certain terrains, and the observation that craters with ATE can be near to similarly sized craters that only have gradational ejecta.

Abstract:
This extended summary originates from the thesis "The screen of Charon: the crossing of the subject of language in the cinematographic narrative" carried out under collaboration between the universities of Brasília, Brazil, and Nice Sophia Antipolis, Fance. It is a synthesis of psychoanalytic investigation concerning two narrative styles: modern and classical. First and foremost, they are concerned with film production. In this report we discuss the issue of pleasure from the amalgam formed by the French words “jeu” (game, play) and “jouissance” (the act of experiencing pleasure). Thus, our “mot-valise” "jeuïssance" (“playsure”) will allow us to articulate the experience of pleasure undergone by the subject of language with the narrative production. The categories created in the Lacanian Triskel will be evoked, namely: the pleasure of the Other, the pleasure of meaning and the pleasure of the Phallic. They are articulated on a borromean logic with modern, classical and classical-industrial narrative productions. By creating our triskel, we identify, in the figure of the trompe-l'oeil, the function of the small object as the narrative field. By crossing the lacanian inferos, we believe to have found in the figure of “playsure” a device for analyzing narration, composed exclusively of psychoanalytic material. Thus, in any narrative production of a subject of language, narratives are either buried in the supposed firm land of science or religion or in the moving sands of the arts. This psychoanalytic journey will take us far beyond the principle of pleasure

Abstract:
Launching the process of establishing ecotourism in developing countries requires today a real strategy to help decision makers to ensure the sustainability of tourism development in their territory. Furthermore, with regard to desert areas, there is urgency to build a model of implementation of ecotourism projects applicable in these vulnerable areas and based on the concept of ecotourism optimum developed by Jean-Pierre Lozato-Giotart (2003, p.306) that promotes synergy between their different components: actors, resources (natural and cultural), and visitors local communities ... that is to say, a "balance between recreation and conservation practices of the host territories". Creating a grid of indicators specific to desert areas ecotourism is an approach that could help build development programs based on the principles of ecotourism optimum. Also, the application of the concept of ecotourism in the optimum southwest of the Algerian Sahara, through the pilot project of ecotourism in the Daïra Charouine, located in Adrar, responds appropriately to local development strategies of the southern regions of Algeria, the vast majority is classified as poor, although their wealth in biodiversity and culture has already been identified. This case study opens a new vision to carry on thinking about sustainability indicators ecotourism for their effective implementation in the context of planning and project management in desert environments

Abstract:
Being a young female manager is an unexplored area that needs to be highlighted. This study therefore aims to explore what it means to work as a young female public servant manager. The sample consisted of four young female managers in a large municipality in Sweden. With an ethnographic research approach, eight participating observations including a focus group interview was performed. The result showed that the managers felt that factors such as age and gender did not play a role in their leadership. Despite this, we perceived a sense of ambivalence in the view of the importance of age and gender by making a difference in their employees’ age and gender. The managers considered that younger, older, male and female employees were needed different treatment. To understand the result of the study in its entirety, theories inspired by Charon and symbolic interactionism was used which emphasizes that we become us by the social interaction with others. Systems theory was also used to show how the managers are affected and also affecting the society’s image of the general management role.

A sample of particles can be generated from these collision and be trapped in orbit around Pluto or Charon. This work analyses, through numerical simulations, the stable regions around the binary system. This analysis took into account the Restricted Three Body Problem. From these numerical simulations diagrams of a x e were generated defining, stable, escape and unstable regions. Stable regions around Pluto (width about 8200km), around Charon (width about 2900km) and around the baricentre of the binary system (after a semi-major axis about 49000km) were obtained. These values are in good agreement with the work by Holman & Wiegert (1999). These stable regions were also analysed by using the technique of POincaré Surface of Section (PSS). A sample of about 230 PSS was obtained. In all these PSS chaotic and stable regions and also the resonance locations were identified. Diagrams of Cj x x, derived from the PSS, were obtained. They represent the synthesis of the stability region acquired from the PSS. A particular set of SSP was generated in order to analyse the evolution of 1:4 and 1:6 resonances. The new satellites, Hydra and Nix, are located in stable regions although, they are not in resonances with Charon, as can be seen in the grade a x e.

Brown, Lisa. "Charon's Obol? : an archaeological study of the role of coins in Roman burial ritual (with case studies from Roman Italy, Germany, Britain and unconquered Scandinavia)." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/10634.

Full text
Abstract:
Little detailed analysis has been undertaken which looks at the coin in the context of the burial. Their numismatic information is discussed in detail in excavation reports but little or no attempt is made to investigate the function of the coin. In many cases they are simply regarded as payments to Charon, the ferryman of Greek mythology, for the journey to the afterlife; an interpretation based on classical literature. Earliest research into the subject tended to look for evidence for ‘Charon’s Obol’ using the information in the Greek and Roman sources with little or no reference to the archaeological material. This did not allow for a full understanding of their presence and meaning. Publication of Gorecki’s Studien zur Sitte Münzbeigabe in römerzeitlichen Körpergräbern’ (BRGK 56, 1975) and Cantilena’s Un obolo per Caronte? (PdP 50, 1995) significantly changed methodology by analysing burial remains but even these are limited. They look very specifically at one part of the Empire and a single aspect of the coin in the burial, i.e. location and thus are not sufficiently detailed to find patterns which can be tested in different areas of the Roman Empire. This work is a systematic analysis of the coin in the context of the burial using case studies from cemeteries from Roman Italy, Germany, Britain and unconquered Scandinavia (as a comparison to the Imperial evidence). It takes a database of c. 450-500 burials from each of the areas (with the exception of Denmark which has fewer examples) and investigates the pre-Roman tradition, chronological distribution of the practice, the metal type and number of coins used, the length of time between coin and burial date, pierced coins and associated grave goods. The aims are as follows: - Thoroughly investigate the coin in the context of the burial in each of the case study areas and compare the patterns identified; - Explore the origin and spread of this custom, from early Greece to Italy across the Roman Empire and beyond, while investigating the potential religious or social meanings of the practice and its distribution; - Chart the evolution and the possible reasons for changes and modifications to the practice over space and time; - Assess the significance of my findings in terms of the transmission of cultural traditions or religious beliefs and practices between ancient societies.

The study present here is the first extensive effort on conservation biology of the endangered butterfly species Sasakia charonda formosana. Confirmed habitats of this butterflies are scattered in Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Taichung, and Hualien Counties. The butterfly is univoltine, on the wing in May and June. Adult feeds on sap produced by oaks, while the larva devours leaves of Celtis sinensis. It overwinters as diapausing 5th instar larva in debris exclusively around old trees with diameter of trunk over 38.2 cm (n=334), and 96.5 % of the overwintering larvae were present within 100 cm from these trees. Diapausing larva showed significant preference at north- and east-facing position, with the head directing to southwest or south, and the directional preference appeared to be correlated with higher temperature and humidity. Diapause was found broken by mid-March. When the budding of C. sinensis started, and the waken-up larvae returned to the canopy to resume feeding. Pupation occurred by late April, with emergence of adults began by early May. Occurrence of adults reached peak by late May. Butterfly was most active from 10:00 AM through 11:00 AM. Total period of immature stages took 305.2 ±5.3 days (n=53). Three predatory nature enemies of S. charonda formosana were discovered during the study, namely, Tetramorium nipponense, Xysticus sp. and Evarcha sp., they preyed on butterfly ovum, overwintering larva, and 4th instar larva, respectively. The major conservational crisis faced by this butterfly were deterioration of habitats, massive soil and trash dumping, and illegal collecting of adults and overwintering larvae of this butterfly.

Brand management issues by the business community and academia considered important marketing management strategies and measures. Especially strategic brand management has become the subject of considerable attention. Case company Charoen Pokphand company in order to strengthen its brand equity, which in recent years began to direct the use of the brand in the retail market to sell meat to consumers. But whether it is strategic brand management measures to win consumers loyalty is very concerned about the issue regulatory authorities. In addition , the company is also the case for another very important issue is the multinational company Charoen Pokphand, since national consumer habits difference, then the Charoen Pokphand strategic brand management measures in different countries and have different effects? In order to explore these two research question, the present study is scheduled to Taiwan, China and Thailand consumers to do more research. The results found the following: (1) determine the Charoen Pokphand’s Strategic Brand Management will significantly affect customer loyalty. (2) no positive effect on brand awareness. (3) Taiwan, China and Thailand consumer opinions differ

"The Effect of Rayleigh-Taylor Instabilities on the Thickness of Undifferentiated Crust on Kuiper Belt Objects like Charon." Master's thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.17885.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: In this thesis I model the thermal and structural evolution of Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs) and explore their ability to retain undifferentiated crusts of rock and ice over geologic timescales. Previous calculations by Desch et al. (2009) predicted that initially homogenous KBOs comparable in size to Charon (R ~ 600 km) have surfaces too cold to permit the separation of rock and ice, and should always retain thick (~ 85 km) crusts, despite the partial differentiation of rock and ice inside the body. The retention of a thermally insulating, undifferentiated crust is favorable to the maintenance of subsurface liquid and potentially cryovolcanism on the KBO surface. A potential objection to these models is that the dense crust of rock and ice overlying an ice mantle represents a gravitationally unstable configuration that should overturn by Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instabilities. I have calculated the growth rate of RT instabilities at the ice-crust interface, including the effect of rock on the viscosity. I have identified a critical ice viscosity for the instability to grow significantly over the age of the solar system. I have calculated the viscosity as a function of temperature for conditions relevant to marginal instability. I find that RT instabilities on a Charon-sized KBO require temperatures T > 143 K. Including this effect in thermal evolution models of KBOs, I find that the undifferentiated crust on KBOs is thinner than previously calculated, only ~ 50 km. While thinner, this crustal thickness is still significant, representing ~ 25% of the KBO mass, and helps to maintain subsurface liquid throughout most of the KBO's history.

Abstract:
abstract: The seasonal deposition of CO2 on the polar caps is one of the most dynamic processes on Mars and is a dominant driver of the global climate. Remote sensing temperature and albedo data were used to estimate the subliming mass of CO2 ice on south polar gullies near Sisyphi Cavi. Results showed that column mass abundances range from 400 - 1000 kg.m2 in an area less than 60 km2 in late winter. Complete sublimation of the seasonal caps may occur later than estimated by large-scale studies and is geographically dependent. Seasonal ice depth estimates suggested variations of up to 1.5 m in depth or 75% in porosity at any one time. Interannual variations in these data appeared to correlate with dust activity in the southern hemisphere. Correlation coefficients were used to investigate the relationship between frost-free surface properties and the evolution of the seasonal ice in this region. Ice on high thermal inertia units was found to disappear before any other ice, likely caused by inhibited deposition during fall. Seasonal ice springtime albedo appeared to be predominantly controlled by orientation, with north-facing slopes undergoing brightening initially in spring, then subliming before south-facing slopes. Overall, the state of seasonal ice is far more complex than globally and regionally averaged studies can identify. The discovery of cryovolcanic features on Charon and the presence of ammonia hydrates on the surfaces of other medium-sized Kuiper Belt Objects suggests that cryovolcanism may be important to their evolution. A two-dimensional, center-point finite difference, thermal hydraulic model was developed to explore the behavior of cryovolcanic conduits on midsized KBOs. Conduits on a Charon-surrogate were shown to maintain flow through over 200 km of crust and mantle down to radii of R = 0.20 m. Radii higher than this became turbulent due to high viscous dissipation and low thermal conductivity. This model was adapted to explore the emplacement of Kubrik Mons. Steady state flow was achieved with a conduit of radius R = 0.02 m for a source chamber at 2.3 km depth. Effusion rates computed from this estimated a 122 - 163 Myr upper limit formation timescale.

The transaction of agricultural products, which take place in the local farmers’ market, has a variety of modes. According to Oliver. E Williamson (1991), the characteristics of transactions differ from incentives intensity, administrative control, and performance attributes. Based upon the foregoing, agricultural transaction modes in the local farmers’ market distinctions into three kinds: (1) market mode (2) hybrid mode, and (3) hierarchy mode. The purpose of this study is attempting to abstract the crucial dimension of agricultural transactions for organizing some transactions this way and other transactions another. The overall objectives of this study can be said to be threefold: (1) To investigate and collect literatures about the agricultural transaction modes which are presently most popular in Taiwan. (2) To identify and distinguish these transactions into market mode, hybrid mode, and hierarchy mode as suggested by Williamson. (3) As an exploratory study, to suggest uncertainty as the crucial dimension of agricultural transactions alternatives, to demonstrate why and how uncertainty rule on the selection decision. The results from this study suggest that: (1) When the uncertainty of agricultural transactions is high, hierarchy mode appears to be feasible relatively. (2) When the uncertainty is low, market mode appears to be feasible relatively. (3) When the uncertainty is in an intermediate situation, hybrid mode appears to be feasible relatively. A case study of the broiler contracts of the Charoen Pokphand Enterprise (Taiwan) Co. shows that the relationship between feasible contract mode and uncertainty of transaction is consistent with theoretical expectation.

Since its entering WTO, Taiwan has seen its demand in animal feed decline to 5 million metric ton in 2004 from 6.8 million metric ton in 2001. Animal feed industry in Taiwan is basically divided into three parts: pig, chicken, and duck. Pork consumption rate has been dwindling due to quality concern and market opening. Duck market is growing slowly, while chicken is shrinking steadily. Facing market competition, demand declining, and economic profit falling, animal feed company has to consider its profitability and evaluate its value. How to create sustainable growth and profitable corporate value should become a primary concern. This research uses public financial data from animal feed companies between 2006 and 2010, based on the free cash flow model to evalucate the valuation of these companies, and has reached the following empirical results: 1. For the case companies in the screw fastener industry, value analysis and sensitivity analysis results show that: A. Gross profit rate is positive related to its intrinsic value. B. Operating revenue change is positive related to its intrinsic value. C. Capital expenditure are positive related to its intrinsic value. 2. When making critical decisions and resource allocation considerations, value driver analysis and core competence analysis can help corporate executives to valuate its profitability and create economic value for the company, and this will help investors to evaluate the companies.

My work is a critical view of a modern principle of personal autonomy and an idea of autonomous man, which stems from philosophy of liberalism. The practice of personal autonomy in bioetics, which takes over the features of this political concept and does not comprise a metaphysical question about a man seems to empty a concept of humanity. My work tries to turn attentation to this problem and show the difficulties of personal autonomy when presented from the secular point of view. I want to offer then the concept of narrative ethics as a vision of supplementing the concept of modern principal bioetics.

Bannister, Michele Taisia. "Bright Trans-Neptunian Objects in the Southern Sky." Phd thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/139460.

Full text
Abstract:
We complete the census of bright distant trans-Neptunian worlds through surveying the Southern Hemisphere sky, particularly the unexplored high-latitude regions that would contain trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) that have experienced severe scattering. In this thesis, we developed an archival TNO survey of 6,275 square degrees of sky south of the ecliptic that have more than thirty nights of observation over five years, to a limiting magnitude of 19.0 in clear. We generated our survey through an innovative analysis of the archive of more than half a million images taken between 2 March 2004 and 23 October 2009 by the Siding Spring Survey. This survey for near-Earth asteroids uses the 0.5 m Uppsala telescope at Siding Spring Observatory. Our survey took advantage of their dense temporal coverage to resample their cadence of observation into a survey for slow-moving objects. From twenty billion astronomical sources on the Uppsala images, we extracted thirteen million transient sources, computed a subset of the trillion possible Solar System orbits that these points of light could form, and produced only a few hundred potential candidate orbital arcs. This computational processing required a hundred thousand hours of CPU time. Our survey adds to the last two decades of work into understanding the cold, distant outer regions of our Solar System that lie beyond Neptune’s orbit. These regions contain varied populations of small objects. As the remnant planetesimals of the protoplanetary disk, they offer insight into the early history and evolution of the Solar System. The brightest reflect enough photons to allow spectroscopy, indicating the composition of the topmost few millimetres of the volatile ices that form the mantles of these worlds. The sixteen hundred TNOs known have been discovered through sky surveys with optical telescopes; most extensive surveys have previously focussed on the Northern Hemisphere sky. We detected no new objects in the southern sky. We defined the exact phase space of orbital parameters that was well sampled by the Uppsala TNO survey by developing a survey simulator. Examining our survey’s observation of the objects from a well-characterized synthetic population, we found we had a 90% detection efficiency of the Kuiper belt and scattered disk; seeing no objects with an absolute magnitude between our range of sensitivity of -2.5 to 3.5 limited the bright end of the TNO population distribution. We unsuccessfully attempted to characterize two of the known distant objects. Pluto’s largest moon, Charon, is suspected to have cryovolcanism-related ammonia on its surface; we observed in the L-band with Gemini North’s GNIRS spectrograph to improve the detection, but received too little telescope time to detect Charon. In contrast, little is known about the newly discovered high-inclination Centaur-like object 2012 DR30: we obtained a light-curve with the Faulkes South 2m, but found only that this object was unvarying in brightness at better than the 5% level.
