Silvers, Anita. People with Disabilities. Edited by Hugh LaFollette. Oxford University Press, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199284238.003.0013.

Abstract:
This article focuses on the disability problem and the rights of the disabled people for a dignified existence. The system of removing people from the community because they are disabled took hold in the USA in the middle of the nineteenth century. Before 1820, disabled people stayed with their families or found places elsewhere in their immediate communities. During the following forty years, however, residential schools meant to train these individuals so that they could be more productive sprang up, supported by charitable donations and government funds. Up until the US Civil War, these institutions focused on improving the skills and therefore the productivity of corporeally or cognitively impaired people, and on giving them access to the Bible and therefore to the word of God, with the goal of returning them to the community to earn their own livings.

Abstract:
Crimea was a home front before it was a war zone. With a focus on the implementation of martial law in Crimea, chapter 1 covers the period from mobilization in 1852 through the eve of the Allied landing in Crimea in September 1854. The related discussion of military resource extraction addresses the difference between obligation and charitable donation. This chapter also explores cultural aspects of the home front, with special attention to the rise of religious nationalism and latent inter-ethnic and inter-confessional tensions among Crimea’s diverse population. Already before violence reached Crimean shores, breakdown in military-civilian authority is evident as is the perception of Crimean Tatars as enemies of the state. In broad brushstrokes, the chapter analyzes how international conflict shaped life in Crimea at the local level.

Clements, Richard, and Ademola Abass. Complete Equity and Trusts. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/he/9780198787549.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Titles in the Complete series combine extracts from a wide range of primary materials with clear explanatory text to provide readers with a complete introductory resource. This book deals with the emergence of equity and how it differs from the common law. The trust concept is explained and the different types of trust that exist outlined. These include resulting, constructive, and charitable trusts. Trusts must obey certain basic rules such as legal formalities and the three certainties of intention, subject matter, and the need for a beneficiary. There are exceptions to these strict rules, such as proprietary estoppel and certain gifts made upon death, for example secret trusts and donatio mortis causa. The office of trustee is considered, including the methods of appointment; their powers of maintenance, advancement, variation, and investment; and the fiduciary nature of their office. Equitable remedies, such as injunctions, specific performance, and tracing are included. The use of constructive trusts in cohabitation disputes is analysed.

Abstract:
This chapter charts the National Football League's (NFL) meteoric rise, thanks to NFL Films' unwavering designation of pro football as a unique and unifying reflection of America. Fueled by a combination of sport and media's increasingly profitable symbiosis and Commissioner Pete Rozelle's image-consciousness, the NFL enhanced its marketing efforts during the 1960s and began to diversify aggressively, creating branded products that reached out to audiences beyond the white, middle-class men who composed its typical fan base. The Rozelle-era NFL solidified its prominence in American culture through its merger with the American Football League and subsequent development of the Super Bowl. This chapter examines how the NFL made connections to as many potential fans as possible by establishing national television exposure, branding various items, organizing athletic events for kids, donating to charitable causes, and creating a tourist attraction. It looks at one production that codified NFL Films' signature aesthetic practices, They Call It Pro Football, and how it situates professional football as “the sport of our time.”
