Abstract:
The “intellectuals” were born during the Dreyfus lawsuit and, in the beginning, the neologism was used to refer to the cultural vanguard daring enough to defy the reason of State. As a consequence, the intellectuals' traditional ways of political commitment somehow oppose them to the governing elites of whom they tend to become the bad conscience. Thus, according to Pierre Bourdieu: “the intellectual (…) gives rise to a policy of the purity which appears to be the perfect antithesis of the reason of State.” So it seems relevant to focus on those of them who didn't accept this role of criticism and confronted themselves with the reality of power. Furthermore, the intellectuals that we shall study present another characteristic: they supported a charismatic political leader. For several commentators, emotionality and irrationality are essential elements in the definition of charisma. It can thus seem paradoxical to see the members of a certain cultural elite binding to such leaders. In fact, the study of the relations between intellectuals and charismatic personalities can be a way of demystifying this power that remains partly unexplained

Otterson, Brooke. "Therapist charisma and its impact| A phenomenological study." Thesis, Alliant International University, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3735209.

Abstract:

Charisma has been intently studied in professions that value social influence. A notable exception has been in the field of psychotherapy, despite the central importance of therapists’ ability to engage and influence their clients. The present study is the first to qualitatively examine the phenomenon of therapist charisma as perceived by clients. The researcher conducted a semi-structured interview with 17 participants in order to gain a sense of how they perceived, related to, and described their charismatic therapists and their therapeutic efficacy. Participants were an ethnically diverse adult sample, with an average age of 42, who had a minimum of 8 sessions with a licensed therapist they considered to be charismatic. Only those participants who rated their therapist’s charisma as 7 or above on a 1-10 scale were included. Themes identified across transcripts highlighted the importance of common factors, especially relationship factors associated with the quality of the alliance, in determining clients’ evaluations of the therapy relationship and outcome. Responses suggest that participants’ perceptions of charisma were interwoven with common factors valued in therapists. Of participants reporting positive experiences, 67% described their therapist’s charisma as relationally and therapeutically helpful. Only 2 participants reported their therapist’s charisma as a negative. Multiple positive differences were reported between charismatic and non-charismatic therapists, such as greater rapport, comfort, relatability, and quality of working alliance. Participants identified characteristics and behaviors in their therapists commonly associated with charisma in the literature (e.g., animated voice and body language, emotional expressiveness, quality of eye contact, articulateness) and linked several positive descriptors with their therapist’s charisma (e.g. engaging, intriguing, friendly, happy, genuine, funny, warm). The interweaving of charisma within themes makes it difficult to gage the specific impact of charisma on participants’ experiences. The possibility is put forth that common factors described in this study refer to the content of what therapists delivered in therapy and charisma refers to the style with which therapists delivered content. Results indicate it is reasonable to be curious about how charisma might enhance a therapist’s effectiveness. The fact that clients in this study describe their therapists’ charisma as relationally and therapeutically helpful suggests it is worthy of further investigation.

Burnett, David George. "Charisma and community in a Ghanaian Independent Church." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 1997. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/29578/.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1919, J.W. Appiah, a Methodist catechist in the Gold Coast, sought the anointing of the Holy Spirit, and began to prophesy and pray for the sick. He and his followers were expelled from the Church, and formed both a new community and a denomination known as the Musama Disco Christo Church (MDCC). It has often been argued that African Independent Churches result as a reaction to Western domination of land or people, but it is shown that this was not the primary issue with the MDCC. The initial quest was for spiritual empowerment, which resulted in prophetic revelation and the formation of a church with distinctively African characteristics. Following Appiah's death, his son (Akaboha II) became the head of the growing church, which was affected by two contemporary developments. The first was the nationalist movement led by Nkrumah, which stimulated the MDCC to a mission of the spiritual liberation of Christianity from remaining Western elements. This was achieved through the innovation of rituals and practices based upon traditional African forms. The second was revivalist teaching brought to Ghana by Pentecostal evangelists, which the MDCC adopted as "instantaneous healing". Although the church continued to grow after the fall of Nkrumah and the death of Akaboha II, in the late 1980s it started to decline. This thesis argues that the innovation of African traditions resulted in a form of contextualization that was inflexible, so the church was unable to adapt to social change and has become less relevant. Former members are now seeking a more relevant charisma of the Holy Spirit in other churches. The illiterate members prefer the Pentecostal churches, and the educated younger generation are attracted to the newer Charismatic churches.

Abstract:
This study identified a set of distinct implicit leadership theories (ILTs) within a sample of working adults and examined whether differences in followersâ ILTs versus actual leadership influenced ratings of charisma and performance. Results based on a sample of 718 employees indicated 11 distinct ILT profiles. Results also showed that the closer the perceived congruence between employeesâ ILTs (measuring their ideal leader) and their actual leader, the higher the ratings of charisma for that leader. There was no influence of ILT congruence on leader performance ratings. Some support was found for previous findings that country/location does have an influence on ILT profile, but no support was found for the influence of age, gender, ethnicity, or organizational tenure, suggesting that ILTs may be generalizable across many different populations. Further analysis of a sample for 182 leaders indicated that that leader ILTs do not appear to be exhibited through either personality traits, nor through employee perceptions of ILT-relevant behaviors.

Mutsekwa, Lynette Rudo. "The relationship between perceived leader charisma and follower innovation." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/59732.

Full text
Abstract:
Leadership research is aligned that the most important drivers of follower innovation in organisations are their leaders. Yet there is no specific leadership style that has been irrefutably identified to inspire innovation. The lack of consistency and consensus in the leadership style that influences follower innovation has been driven by the styles that have been researched in relation to follower innovation being too broad. This research aimed to unbundle the charismatic element of leadership which could be found in some leadership styles. To this end, the research further categorized charismatic leaders as either positive or negative. This assisted in understanding the relationship between perceived leader charisma and follower innovation with employee voice as a moderator. Online questionnaires were sent to a target population which comprised of professionals, middle and senior managers who work in the technology industry in South Africa using purposive and snowballing sampling techniques. Data collected from 329 participants was used to assess validity and reliability of the measuring instrument for the study. Employing regression analyses, the research showed that perceived charismatic leadership as well as perceived positive charismatic leader behaviours are both positively related to follower innovation. Further, employee voice positively enhances these relationships. No significant relationship was identified between perceived negative charismatic leader behaviours and follower innovation. However employee voice negatively moderated this relationship. The findings of this research offer empirically validated evidence to suggest a relationship between perceived positive charismatic leaders, which future researchers can develop on.

Calkowski, Marcia. "Power, charisma, and ritual curing in a Tibetan community in India." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/27033.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is concerned with the ways in which Tibetans living in Dharmsala, Northern India, react to events such as illness, personal distress, and misfortune, when they perceive such events as disturbances to a given social and moral order and as evidence of "spirit attack". To re-establish the order, the context moves/widens from a concern with an afflicted individual to include more general political issues and finally focuses on the legitimation of authority. Dharmsala Tibetans live in a hierarchical society and subscribe to a hierarchical cosmos. The ideology places responsibility upon humans for aligning this hierarchy and prescribes the legitimate means by which the hierarchy may be ascended. Two efficient causes of illnesses result in spirit attack: (1) the first attributes spirit attack to human violation of hierarchical tenets; (2) the second, to the illegitimate status ambitions of evil spirits. The logic of the ritual cure addresses the resolution of status ambiguities. Successful ritual cures are appreciated in terms of two idioms denoting two aspects of charismatic authority. When the spirit attack results from human violation of hierarchical tenets, the patient's cure is contingent upon his or her unsystematically acquired power (rlung-rta). When the second efficient cause obtains and evil spirits are responsible for the attack, the patient's cure depends upon the outcome of a duel between an exorcist and the spirit(s), and the successful cure is described in terms of systematically acquired power (dbang). These idioms serve not only to legitimate status in Tibetan society, but also to rationalize hierarchical ascent. In addition to ritual curing, the idioms are employed in assessing the outcomes of events such as sports, gambling, and weather-making. Where the idioms overlap moral ambiguities emerge. The two idioms are discernible in much of Tibetan history where they focus upon the legitimation of succession to charismatic office. The idiom of unsystematically acquired power appears to predominate in the present refugee context.

Cone, Tiffany Carole. "Charismatic Embodiment and Religious Authority - a Qadiriyya Sufi community in Northwest China." Phd thesis, Canberra, ACT : The Australian National University, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/13487.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines practices of charismatic cultivation at a Qadiriyya Sufi site located in Northwest China named Guo Gongbei. The thesis asks—what is charisma in this context? That is, what factors are perceived to be generative of charisma, a particular spiritual power? The effective transmission or cultivation of this ‘charisma’ to disciples is vital to the maintenance and continuity of the Sufi genealogy, and this is crucial for the Chinese Qadiriyya Sufi disciples in this study. The disciples of this network are celibate, and so—unlike Qadiriyya networks elsewhere in the world—the succession of leadership is based solely on religious merit, not blood inheritance. The thesis argues that, in this cultural context, charismatic power is rooted in the body, and cultivated primarily through a set of bodily disciplines that emphasise the development of the individual along a three stage path. This bodily charisma is then socially reinforced and strengthened by a number of other important practices —including narrative and naming, emulation, social proximity and distance during public ritual, and education and mobility. The secondary question of this thesis connects the process of charismatic embodiment to ongoing debates amongst the wider Muslim community in Northwest China. These debates continue to question the orthodoxy and integrity of Qadiriyya charismatic practice and in turn, their religious authority. The thesis thus also asks, why is charisma contentious, and what are the potential implications of this charismatic practice in the contemporary geo-political scene? The thesis is based on 12 months of fieldwork at Guo Gongbei in Linxia, Gansu Province, China from September 2011 to September 2012.

Abstract:
In this paper, I build on the assumption that collective emotional experience plays an important role in sustaining the group identity central to nation-making processes inspired by charismatic leaders. This analysis is based on a case study of the Venezuelan government after the death of Hugo Chávez. I examine ways in which elements of the leader’s narrative are used by his successors after his death. I also argue that the current political actors of the bureaucratized Revolutionary Government of Venezuela are attempting to sustain popular support by reaffirming a national identity that resonated among the masses largely due to the charisma of a now absent leader. I wish to explore the probability or lack thereof of a sustained emotional connection of the government regime with the mass audience.

Burns, Stuart Keith. "Charisma and spirituality in the early church : a study of Messalianism and Pseudo-Macarius." Thesis, University of Leeds, 1999. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/1762/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis is an investigation into the concept of Charisma and Spirituality in the Early Church with particular emphasis upon the writings of Ps-Macarius, and of a group of ascetics known as the Messalians, evident in the late fourth / early fifth centuries. The Macarian writings are examined to see what they reveal about the experiential pneumatic theology of the Early Church, the relationship between Syrian and Hellenic traditions of Christian Rhetoric, and the relationship between Ps-Macarius and the Cappadocian Circle. The Macarian corpus as a whole is examined to assess its rhetorical influences and style. The rhetoric of the Macarian corpus is seen to illustrate a high degree of sophistication. This study also gives definition to two terms that have become imprecise and diverse in their use: 'enkrateia' (self-control), and `Syrian Christianity'. By isolating the characteristics of enkratefa the definitive stages of an encratic lifestyle are identified. The breaking down of the term into enkrateia, radical enkrateta and exclusive enkrateta enables a much clearer discussion to take place as to the nature of the encratic theology of a group or individual. The final element of this study is a consideration of the distinct Macarian imagery that is evident within the corpus. Two images are considered in detail, the 'flight of the soul' and 'sober intoxication'. Overall this study shows the variety of influences upon Ps-Macarius, and the uniqueness of his expression. The influences upon Ps-Macarius include a context of endemic Syrian spirituality, a radical encratic lifestyle, a Hellenic rhetorical training, and a distinct interpretation of Platonic and Neo- Platonic images, coupled to the wider Judaic / Mesopotamian influences of his Church. It is shown that Ps-Macarius represents an individual voice that is distinct and recognisable amongst the Fathers of the Church.

ABSTRACT

Title:  Communication and types of leadership: an example from the Swedish Military Organisation

Level:  BA Thesis in Media and Communication Studies

Key words:  Leadership, charisma, directorship/manager, leader, communication

Purpose: The aim with this study  entitled "communication and leadership: an example from the Swedish military organisation”, was to get better insight about leadership and communication in the Swedish army. In this purpose, we used organisational theories as well as communication theories to illustrate and support our study and statements.

Method: our empirical data was based on a qualitative study but we even carried out a quantitative study, since a survey had been made. The purpose with the survey was to get, from people chosen randomly in the city of Kalmar, opinions and thoughts about leadership and communication in the Swedish army. We even did some deep interviews with former and present officers in Swedish army, in order to develop our study.

Results: At the end of our study we were able to say that there were different types of leadership, depending on the type of organisation. The Swedish army has a distinct structure when it comes to leadership and communication. However, even if the structure is based on a hierarchical pyramid, meaning that all the final decisions are the prerogative of the commanders, it is more and more common to initiate dialogue in this organisation. The lack of knowledge and prejudices are the main reasons why the Swedish military organisation is not well known. Another reason, based on the results from our survey, might be the lack of external communication from the army’s side.

Abstract:
The concepts of transformational and charismatic leadership have led to a variety of leadership behaviors and practices that seek to enhance followers' motivation to perform beyond expectations, by changing their values, goals, needs and aspirations at work. One such activity, which has gained momentum and interest in recent years, is the dissemination of a vision. This thesis is an attempt to investigate the nature of the visioning process in organizational leadership through theoretical analysis and empirical investigation.
An analysis of the visioning process yielded two important components: the visioning activity and the visioning product. Based on this analysis and a review of the existing literature, vision was defined as a product with content and the visioning activity a two-stage process involving vision formulation and vision articulation. Building on these definitions, a number of vision content characteristics and visioning behaviors were examined, leading to theoretical propositions and testable hypotheses.
The empirical test of the proposed theoretical framework was carried out in two studies. Study 1 investigated observers' perceptions of leader behaviors, vision content characteristics and related attributions of vision and visionary leadership. This study was conducted using analyses of biographical and autobiographical accounts. Study 2 sought to replicate the investigation with direct observations from followers of "real-life" organizational leaders.
The empirical test substantiated the importance of distinguishing between the various content characteristics of visions as they relate to attributions of vision and visionary leadership on the part of observers/followers. The empirical results also support the importance of distinguishing between the various components of the visioning activity of leaders as they relate to attributions of vision and visionary leadership on the part of observers/followers. Finally, the results suggest distinct relationships between the attributions of vision/visionary leadership and various effects of the visioning process on followers.
In light of these results, suggestions for future research and implications for leadership practice are discussed.

Abstract:
Charisma has remained an important dimension of humankind’s social life, especially when religion is concerned. This thesis aims to address the question of how charisma is maintained even as it becomes routinized. In the sociology of Max Weber, charisma is defined as the extraordinary quality of a leader recognized by his followers and constitutes a type of authority in contrast to legal-rational and traditional authorities. Weber then proposed the thesis of the routinization of charisma, arguing that charisma was revolutionary, yet also inherently ephemeral and would inevitably be “routinized” into legal-rational or traditional authority. Recent studies have remodeled the concept of charisma based on empirical cases and theoretical contributions provided by prolific literature after Weber. Charisma has been redefined as “the expectation of the extraordinary” and the interdependence of charisma, institution and tradition has been increasingly emphasized, instead of their mutual exclusiveness. To address the question, this study examines the case of Soka Gakkai and Soka Gakkai International (SG&I), a new religion, which originated in prewar Japan. It has established a gigantic organization with an alleged membership of twelve million throughout the world and has developed various institutions affiliated to it. Meanwhile, its current leader, Ikeda Daisaku (池田大作), is well known as a charismatic leader to whom millions of members have expressed personal devotion for over five decades. It specifically focuses on young male Japanese members living in Hong Kong, who can be regarded in the periphery of the organization. This study argues that discipleship of followers is the key to the maintenance of charisma. Discipleship shapes members’ identity, daily practice and lives. Ethnographic accounts on members’ daily activities and the life stories of three members, yielded through eight months of fieldwork, illustrate members’ paths to become disciples and the nature of their discipleship. Also, the techniques employed by the organization to cultivate the discipleship are demonstrated. These include reinterpreting a Japanese traditional concept shitei (mentor and disciple), cultivating discipleship in secular educational institutions and offering rhetorical devices such as commemorative dates. My findings not only enhance our understanding of charisma and its routinization, but also shed light on the daily activities of grassroots members of SG&I, which until recently, have been neglected by literature on SG&I.

Abstract:
This thesis will explore, through the charismatic cycle and by a comparison with Nasserism, the relationship between the charisma and the maintain of the state-building. The first step of the cycle is the pre-charismatic period. It concerns an acute crisis of the patrimonial state that ultimately leads to the question of sovereignty, revealing in turn the charismatic qualities of the leader. The charismatic career, meanwhile, is closely associated with the charismatic assertion. The exceptional situation allows establishing the popular will through a charismatic leader appointed by the nation to lead the country to independence. The revolution from above suggests both the passage from the empire to the republic and the transfer of power in favor of a new oligarchy of bureaucrats and military officers. The transition to an authoritarian situation leads to the tutelary state dominance supporting the modernization of society and pursueing conservative socialization on the political level. Finally, the post-charismatic period is associated with the routinization of charisma, the step in which the institutionalization of the state is shaped. During this step, the passage from limited pluralism to a greater pluralism has not initiated the tutelary shadow that Atatürk exerted on the Turkish political system. If the Praetorians have renounced the direct exercise of power and if the Republican Party has lost its hegemony, the Kemalist legacy is sufficiently strong to structure a political space that opens increasingly to civil society

Abstract:

Newly commissioned officers in the U.S. Army are taught to lead their soldiers from the front and to voluntarily make personal sacrifices in the service of the nation. Although this facet of military culture is seen as critical to the integrity of the force, there are few research studies describing the impact of leader self-sacrifice in the U.S. Army. Research evolving from the transformational leadership literature indicates that civilian leaders who engage in self-sacrificial behavior are viewed as more charismatic than their counterparts and that this perception is particularly pronounced in crisis situations. The current study extended this research to a military population utilizing a quantitative experimental research design. Respondents were randomly assigned to written vignettes that manipulated leader self-sacrifice and the combat environment and then provided assessments of the company grade officer's attributed charisma. Currently serving enlisted and commissioned officers in the California Army National Guard (n = 218) took part in the research, and ANOVA test results indicated that both self-sacrifice and the experience of combat significantly increase perceptions of a company grade officer's attributed charisma. No significant interaction was found between leader self-sacrifice and combat. This study indicated that the self-sacrificial leadership model may have broad applicability across organizations and provides strong support for the Army's emphasis on selfless service. This research can spur positive social change by fostering a more aspirational form of leadership within the Army that builds the psychological resilience of soldiers and results in stronger teams.
