Filer, Christine R. "Character Counts: Traits in Televised Political Campaign Advertisements." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/311298.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines character traits in United States presidential campaign advertisements. It was predicted that Republican and Democratic trait content would be similar in appeal advertisements but would differ in attack and contrast advertisements. Additionally, it was expected that the traits most frequently conveyed in primary election advertisements would differ from those most frequently employed in general election advertisements. The conveyance of traits in conjunction with issues was examined. The hypotheses and research questions were tested on televised campaign ads from the 2008 and 2012 primary and general elections. Overall, both parties appeal to and attack specific character traits with similar frequencies. The traits used in primary election advertisements were much more positive than the traits used in general election advertisements. Campaigns combine issue content with specific traits in their ads. The findings of this study answer questions about how candidates build and shape their images through televised political advertisements.

Kastner, Marianne Sue. "Iktomi: A Character Traits Analysis of a Dakota Culture Myth." PDXScholar, 2012. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/896.

Full text
Abstract:
This qualitative study comparing three separate English-language versions of a single Dakota cultural myth "Iktomi" presents a novel systematic approach for analyzing Native American folk tales to understand how stories function as tools of transmission of cultural information and knowledge. The method involved coding character traits according to type with regard to representation, ability, or attribute to ascertain patterns among the codes and elucidate character roles and relationships, reorganizing the coded traits into paired polarized correspondences to clarify relationships among traits, and assessing pronoun use and documenter effect pointing to gender-specific character activity. Findings revealed an encoded framework illuminating how the tale is used to represent progressive stages in the Dakota vision quest. Analysis using simple word counts of character traits produced emergent patterns disclosing a male-specific focus on character activities with additional evidence delineating a framework for the vision quest traditionally regarded tribally as a male rite of passage.

Colborn, Robert Mark. "Adult Development of Positive Personality Traits Through Character Formation Mentoring." ScholarWorks, 2016. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/2442.

Full text
Abstract:
Positive psychologists have published hundreds of empirical studies correlating positive personality traits with improved outcomes in mental health, physical health, academic and career success, resilience, relationships, and personal happiness. But there remains a dearth of research on the emergence and development of positive personality traits. This grounded theory, qualitative research sought to discover whether positive personality traits can be developed in adult mentoring relationships. Sixteen participants responded in structured interviews about the benefits of their mentoring experiences, and in addition to performing coding analysis as described by Strauss and Corbin (1990), the researcher also compared the answers to Peterson and Seligman's taxonomy of positive traits (2004). Unprompted participant responses overwhelmingly asserted increase of positive traits, as well as five other benefit categories. Improved traits appeared across a wide range of mentee characteristics, and situations, including negative ones, as long as mentors communicated unconditional positive regard and possessed desirable competencies. Social considerations of this research include the possibility that, in combination with therapies to address negative aspects of a client situation, therapists using intentional positive trait development could support recovery, resilience, hope, wisdom, thriving, and all of the benefits positive psychology has correlated to the presence of positive personality traits. Future studies building on this research may include a longitudinal study to understand what situations and character types are most conducive for positive trait development, as well as questions regarding which traits appear in which mentoring situations.

Salahuddin, Patricia Z. "Character Education in a Muslim School: A Case Study of a Comprehensive Muslim School's Curricula." FIU Digital Commons, 2011. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/453.

Full text
Abstract:
Deteriorating social behavior, negative media influence and violence among adolescents have given cause to pause and assess character development for the youth of this country. The purpose of this case study was to examine how a Muslim school’s curricula implemented character education. This study used a qualitative single-case methodology to examine character education as it was experienced by the participants in a private Muslim school. Data were collected from participant interviews, document analysis, and observations of classrooms, daily activities and special events. Data were analyzed to determine how character education was defined by the school, the method of delivery for the character education initiatives and the implementation of character education in this Muslim school. Analysis was based on Character Education Partnership’s (CEP) Eleven Principles of Effective Character Education (2007). The results of the study revealed: (a) participants defined character education using varied traits, processes, and expected behaviors. (b) The school delivers its character education curriculum primarily through the Islamic studies division; an add-on delivery method. Still, there was evidence of partial integration of character education in the core courses and (c) based on CEP’s Eleven Principles four were present and five were partially present in the school’s character education initiatives. Findings also revealed that the school’s emphasis on values, morality and spirituality was instrumental in their teaching character. Findings suggest that if participants in the school community work together they might formulate a definition of character education based on common process and expected behavior and create a collaborative working relationship to implement a character education program. Finally, addressing the absent and partially absent elements of the eleven principles could enhance the school’s character education initiatives. The study provides a process by which religious schools could examine their character education programs. The criteria used to measure the use of character education elements are transferable to other settings; however, this method of study does not allow generalization of findings.

Erasmus, Natasja. "The relationship between maternal employment and teenage character traits / Erasmus N." Thesis, North-West University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/7341.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the study is to determine the relationship between maternal employment and teenage character traits. Statistics show a significant increase in women entering the labour market and although demographics are changing rapidly, social attitudes and policies may lag behind, and the concept of mothers as principal caretakers and fathers as economic providers remains very much in place. The profound and sometimes contradictory convictions of individual members about working mothers and their children paralleled those of countless others and professional people where matched only by the equally profound lack of facts on which these convictions might be based. The objective of the study is to measure the perceived character traits of teenage children in terms of self confidence, locus of control, independence, time management and ambition. The questions were measured within two different scenarios: the first, within households where both parents are employed, and the second, within households where only the father is employed. The aim of the study is to determine if there is any correlation between maternal employment and the presence or lack of presence of the specified character traits. The empirical study was conducted using the quantitative research method with a non–probability sample. The data collection method used for the purpose of this study was in the form of questionnaires, based on the Likert scale. The content validity of the questionnaire was evaluated by a subject matter expert, while the face validity was determined by the Statistical Consultation Services of the North West University. Analysis of completed questionnaires involved descriptive statistics and practical significance. The target population, high school teachers within the North West and Gauteng Province, consisted of 70 participants. Based on the findings emanating from the research, there were no noticeable difference found between teenagers within households where both parents are employed and households where only the father is employed, although the results indicated a tendency for children within households where both parents are employed to be slightly more self confident, lean more towards an internal lotus of control, have higher ambition and are less dependent than those teenagers from households where only the father is employed. These findings, although not noticeable, agree with the literature. There were limitations that had an impact on the results of this study. The limited population resulted in a small sample. The sample indicated that 41 percent have five years or less experience. Participants indicated that they are not always aware of the household dynamics. Additional limitations include the strict ethical roadblocks when conducting research on children. It was recommended that a more comprehensive study should follow, which should include the participation of mothers and teenagers alike. This will give the researcher a distinct and clear result of what the influences could be within the household dynamics.

Full text
Abstract:
The present thesis explores how personality traits are connected to academic achievement. First, a theoretical discussion on the neurobiological basis of different personality traits is presented, where variance in brain- activity, volume and chemistry describes possible differences in personality. Traits previously linked to academic achievement is also described in terms of neurobiology. This is followed by an empirical investigation of the connection between personality traits and academic achievement. Previous research suggest the Big Five (Costa & McCrae, 1992a) personality traits of conscientiousness, order and self-discipline to be positively associated with academic achievement. Also, similar suggestions have been put forward concerning the Values in Action (VIA-IS; Peterson & Seligman, 2004) character strengths of love of learning, self-regulation and persistence and academic achievement. 90 students in a medium sized Swedish senior high school completed the two personality inventories and their grades were collected. Positive correlations were found for the personality traits conscientiousness, order, and self-discipline and for the character strengths persistence, love of learning, perspective and open-mindedness. The results partly supported the hypotheses as well as extended the knowledge about what factors contribute to academic achievement. Discussion of the results and suggestions for further research concludes the thesis. Keywords: personality trait, character strength, neurobiology, academic achievement, BFI, VIA-IS

Abstract:
The aim with this study was to further understand the art of character design, in order to get a better understanding of how visual attributes - especially shape - can be purposely used in order to communicate aspects of a character's personality. The first step was to investigate the subject of character design through relevant material and literature. From this investigation, a total of four character designs have been developed - two"good" and two "evil" - within two different game titles of different graphical styles: One that is more cartoony/stylized and one that is more realistic. Prior to the production a number of work processes - production pipelines - used by artists in the game and movie industry were investigated. From this, the pipeline for the study was compiled. To end the study a survey was conducted, in order to obtain outside feedback for the character designs regarding their style and what personality traits they were associated with. The results show that the majority of the participants perceived the characters in the way that was intended, while the perception of graphical style was a lot more varied.

Abstract:
The advent of positive psychology has increased awareness of factors that lead individuals to thrive in life, allowing for a more comprehensive model of mental health service delivery. However, while measurement and understanding of character strengths and well-being have improved over the last decade, the interaction of these factors with social risk factors is not entirely understood. The current study analyzed an archival dataset consisting of self-report data from 425 high school students, to examine the extent to which high school students' specific character strengths (i.e., social competence, self-regulation, responsibility, and empathy) are associated with positive psychological outcomes (i.e., gratitude, life satisfaction, and hope), and moderate the relationships between positive psychological outcomes and relational and overt peer victimization. All measured character strengths were positively associated with life satisfaction and hope except for empathy, which was negatively associated with both in multivariate analyses. Social competence and self-regulation were positively associated with gratitude. Relational victimization (but not overt victimization) was inversely associated with life satisfaction and gratitude, and indirectly predicted hope as mediated by gratitude. Gratitude and hope predicted life satisfaction in both models, and served as partial mediators of character strengths and relational victimization. For overt victimization, social competence served as a protective factor and self-regulation served as a risk factor to gratitude. For relational victimization, self-regulation served as a protective factor to gratitude. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

Abstract:
In this essay, I analyse the characters of Frodo and Aragorn in Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and Peter Jackson’s film trilogy in order to see if traits and relationships are consistent between the novel and the films. Any changes in characters and the ways they interact in relationships entail changes not only to the overarching narrative, but potentially to the most important themes of the story: friendship and heroism. This is important for the general discourse on the films as adaptations, since they have been accused of not being true to the thematic core of the source material. Peter Jackson’s claim that the intention was to always remain true to the spirit of Tolkien’s novel, then necessitates a closer comparison of the two works. Therefore, in investigating the characters I look not only for differences and similarities, but also for the repercussions these have on the story and the potential reasons behind them. By examining the characters from the perspective of the novel, the films and the filmmakers’ commentaries, I discuss how the removal of social class in the films changes the actions of the characters and consequently affects the themes of friendship and heroism. I also bring up the effects of changing from a novel to film as well as the symbiotic relationship between the character traits and the narrative as a whole. This essay shows that though the social class, character traits and the narrative flow are changed in a circular pattern. A closer look at the films reveals that the story’s core themes of friendship and heroism not only remain consistent, but are given more emphasis than in the novel.

Abstract:
The aim of the study is to generate knowledge about what students in years 4 and 5 (9-12 years old) need to discern in order to draw conclusions about a protagonist’s character traits in a fictional text, and how this ability can be developed. The method chosen to answer the research questions is Learning Study, an iterative classroom-based approach. Two primary school teachers in Swedish and the teacher researcher worked together. They collaborated to design, teach, evaluate, refine, and analyse a series of six lessons in a cyclic process with the Variation Theory as theoretical framework. The empirical data consists of pre- and post-lesson assessments, and video recordings of the lessons. The analyses resulted in five qualitatively different categories and four critical aspects. It is suggested that in order for the student to develop the ability to draw conclusions about a protagonist’s character traits, it is critical: (a) to discern that the protagonist’s character traits, both reproduced (explicit) and implied (implicit), are based in the text, (b) to discern, in the text, descriptions of how a protagonist for example acts, reacts, feels, thinks, and interacts with other characters in the story, as this could facilitate drawing conclusions about the protagonist’s (implicit) character traits, (c) to experience that when conclusions about the protagonist’s (implicit) character traits are related to how a protagonist acts, it is possible to discern what in the text the conclusion is based on, and (d) to experience that conclusions about aprotagonist’s (implicit) character traits can be discerned when they are linked to a character/person who is outside the story (eg in another story, film, or in real life).

Abstract:
This thesis is a product of my inquiries into the questions surrounding women and music. It discusses some interesting patterns about the lives of women composers, and reveals through a social-critical approach the factors that contributed to the isolation and marginalization of two women composers, Clara Wieck-Schumann and Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel and their conformity toward the prevailing norms and values of the nineteenth century. Analysing their character pieces inform us about their lives, style and the era in which they lived and in turn gives us new insights into these women's incursion into male territory. I chose to study character pieces because the character piece as a genre was very common among female composers and in the parlour environment. Understanding that music as a signifier of cultural and socio-political issues supports the idea that genres composed most often by women, such as the character piece in the nineteenth century are a result of the social ramifications that were part of that era. Abstract:
Background: During the last decade fund savings have increased and the competition between the funds have heightened. A long-standing criticism against actively managed funds has been their ineptness of competing with passively managed funds. High fund fees are one of the reasons why this is the case. Fund fees are therefore not only explained by fund performance. Previous studies have concluded that fees and performance can be explained from a fund’s character traits. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to establish if fund fees are justified from a performance standpoint and if the character traits can explain funds fees and performance. The results will then be compared between Sweden and the United States during the time period 2015-2019. Method: Three selections are done, where the first selection is a stratified selection of the American fund market. The second one is a collection of American banks and the third includes the Swedish market. This resulted in 225 American funds, 112 bank managed American funds and 52 Swedish funds. Panel data regressions are performed to establish the relationship between character traits, fund fees and fund return. The character traits that are analysed are age, size, tracking error, and if the fund is bankmanaged. Fama and French’s 3 factor model and Carharts 4-factor model are used as a base for determining if the funds are able to generate excess return. Conclusion: The results indicate that a higher fund fee is justified on the Swedish market as the investor is compensated for the higher cost. The relationship is reversed for the American market where the lower fee funds performance is superior. The character traits have a stronger affiliation with American fund fees and returns compared to the Swedish market. The bank owned funds performed worse overall in both countries. In summary, the results from the American market were more aligned with previous research in contrast to the Swedish market

Abstract:
Juvenile delinquency is a widespread problem in the world and not least in Sweden. This study examined juvenile delinquency and the extent to which personality (the Cloningers biopsychosocial model for the young), family relationships and friends' criminal behavior relate to this. Furthermore, the extent to which crime differs depends on gender and residential area. The study was conducted on a selection of 1461 adolescents in 7th and 8th grade as a part of the LoRDIA project. The results describe a pronounced positive relationship between youngster's criminal behavior and the personality trait Novelty Seeking (i.e. the individual is impulsive, exploratory and sensational seeking). Furthermore, there was a negative correlation between crime and family cohesion and a positive correlation between crime and friends' criminal behavior, which suggests that good cohesion within the family seems to be a protective effect against crime while dealing with criminal friends increases the risk of criminal behavior. The study further showed that there are pronounced gender differences in youth patterns of crime. In addition to boys committing more crimes than girls, it appeared that the personality trait Novelty Seeking has not a generally statistically significant relationship with crime for boys living in a worse socioeconomic area. The study emphasizes that both individual characteristics and social ties are important for understanding the existence of juvenile delinquency.

Innocent, Tabitha M. "Social evolution in Melittobia." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/3874.

Full text
Abstract:
Interactions between individuals can range from peaceful cooperation, through mediated contest, to escalated conflict. Understanding such diversity of interactions between individuals requires an understanding of the costs and benefits involved with these behaviours, and the influence of relatedness between interacting individuals. Species in the parasitoid wasp genus Melittobia display social behaviours at both extremes of this spectrum, from the potentially cooperative traits of the ratio of male to female offspring that they produce, and the dispersal of females to new habitats, to the extreme conflict of violent contests between males. In this thesis, I examine a number of aspects of social evolution in Melittobia. First, I consider the pattern of sex allocation – the division of resources between male and female offspring - where local mate competition theory predicts that females will adjust their offspring sex ratio (proportion of males) conditionally, with females laying increasingly female biased sex ratios as the number of other females laying eggs on the same patch increases. In Chapter 2, I show that M. acasta females always lay an extremely female biased sex ratio, and that this may be explained in part by the fact that male Melittobia engage in violent lethal combat in competition for mates. Early emerging males have a competitive advantage and thus there is a limited advantage for later laying females to produce a less female biased sex ratio. However, I also demonstrate that the advantage of early emergence can be reduced when we consider male body size, which is linked to fighting ability, suggesting that the occurrence of this extreme conflict does not fully explain the unusual pattern of sex allocation in Mellitobia. In Chapter 3, I examine whether the level of dispersal varies in response to the extent of local competition for resources, and the relatedness between competitors. I use the species M. australica, which readily produces two distinct female dispersing morphs, to show that the production of dispersing females increases with the competition for resources. I consider the parallels between the evolution of dispersal and of sex ratio. In Chapter 4, I examine male fighting in more detail and explore theory that predicts that when extreme conflict does evolve, the incidence of fighting varies with resource value, number of competitors, and the level of relatedness between males. I show that mating opportunities are sufficiently valuable that male Melittobia will always engage in fighting irrespective of relatedness, that there is no evidence of opponent assessment prior to fighting, and that the intensity of fights increases with the number of competitors. This thesis highlights the importance of considering combinations of social traits and the interactions between them, to understand the evolution of social characters.

Abstract:
This study provides a strategy from which Economy, Indiana may find structure for future improvement and growth, en route to establishing this Town as a model community for small, rural Indiana towns adjoining rails-to-trails networks. After conducting a visual inventory of the Town, significant physical design components were selected for analysis, including land use, circulation, streetscape, vegetation, buildings/structures, park area, open space/vacant land, and a surveyed historic district. The evidence suggests that even though most of Economy's original visual historic patterns and components still exist, they are in a continual decline. Using the Cardinal Greenway rails-to-trails project as a catalyst, the recommendations will assist the improvement of Economy's visual character, and take advantage of rails-to trails tourism as one means of revitalization.

Abstract:
This study investigates possible connections between shapes, colour, lines, contrast and perceived traits of game characters from their appearance. The study is based on nine pictures of game characters where the characters were interpreted using formal analysis based on theories of shapes, lines and colour components such as hue, value and saturation. A survey was also conducted with 73 respondents who specified each character’s traits with three words. The study shows that there is a larger connection between shapes and characteristics than colour, where the descriptions of the characters were more scattered. Lines, contrast and warm and cool colours generally do not have any noticeable effect on the result.

Abstract:
Modern wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars are characterized by having spikes with fusiform architecture and rachis nodes with one spikelet. However, genotypes with supernumerary spikelets (SS) in which rachis nodes have more than one spikelet exist in nature. Although this may be a promising trait that increases yield components, detailed knowledge about the molecular basis of SS trait and their influence on other wheat traits is still lacking. In the present study, a population of 163 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from an elite line and an exotic line with SS was used to identify QTL for SS and other wheat traits. The RILs, seven checks and the two parents were evaluated for seven SS-related, 10 spike-related, 10 agronomic, and eight quality traits over four to six environments in North Dakota. A genetic map of 3,114.2 cM of length with an average distance of 4.6 cM between any two marker loci was developed using 159 RIL and 939 DArT markers. Composite interval mapping identified 221 QTL, out of which 29% were consistent QTL and 19% were major QTL. Most of the QTL were located on the B-genome (44%) followed by the A-genome (37%) and D-genome (19%). The exotic parent with SS contributed 48% of alleles that increased phenotypic values of the traits suggesting the possibility of enriching the breeding germplasm with genes from this genotype. Seven consistent QTL with epistatic interaction were associated to the SS. QSS.ndsu-2D, a major QTL for SS, was co-located in a cluster of QTL on 2DS demonstrating either pleiotropic effect or closely linkage with 19 QTL for other wheat traits. Similarly, a major QTL associated with glume pubescences (QPP.ndsu-1A.1) was co-located on 1AS with seven QTL for other wheat traits. Major and consistent QTL are targets for further marker assisted selection in wheat breeding programs and/or for research projects aiming of gene cloning.

Abstract:

Educators have a responsibility to choose and share picture books with young children carefully, with a full understanding of the psychological, cultural and developmental potential that these books have for children. Picture books have a profound and lasting effect on children at a most impressionable age. Children identify with the characters in the picture books, sometimes through the personality of the characters, and that identification allows them to acquire ideas and emotions, conscious and unconscious, that promote developmental growth and teach social and cultural constructs.

This study employed a mixed methods research design using content analysis to describe the total personality of young characters in picture books from three decades: the 1950s, the 1980s, and the 2000s. This study looked for changes in the personalities of young characters in those time periods, including changes related to the gender of the characters.

This study found a consistent whole personality for the young characters in the picture books studied that can be described using the Big Five Personality Factors. There were statistically significant differences in the time periods for two of the Big Five Personality Factors. Although there were differences in personality between genders, those differences were not statistically significant.

Significant differences in the personality factors of extroversion and openness to experience in the time periods studied may be related to changes in society that have impacted the lives of children. The use of media, especially television, had exploded into the lives of children in the time periods studied. The relationship between children and nature had changed over the time periods.

Children may need adult intervention in terms of providing context, literary analysis, and discussion when reading picture books. Educators using picture books in instruction may need to carefully consider cultural standards, cultural ideals, and cultural change reflected in the books as part of instructional planning. Educational researchers need to examine the whole personality of characters in picture books so that the findings of their studies may inform and influence those in the home and the school using this powerful tool to help our children achieve their potential.

Lasky, Benjamin M. "Chronic accessibility of virtue-trait inferences : a social-cognitive approach to the moral personality." Virtual Press, 2000. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1177985.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examined the hypothesis that the moral personality is one in which moral knowledge structures are chronically accessible. A spontaneous trait inference cued-recall paradigm was employed. It was expected that those with chronically accessible moral knowledge structures (N = 61) would spontaneously encode virtue-content information differently than those with less chronically accessible moral knowledge structures (N = 77). High and low moral chronic accessibility participants were instructed to memorize sentences that contained virtue-content implications. Sentence recall was then cued by either virtuous dispositional terms or by words that were linked semantically to the sentences. Within the spontaneous processing condition, dispositional cues prompted twice as much recall as semantic cues among participants with high moral chronic accessibility whereas semantic cues prompted twice as much recall as dispositional cues among participants with low moral chronic accessibility. As predicted, within the deliberate processing conditions, there were no high/low moral chronic accessibility differences. These findings support the claim that the moral personality is usefully conceptualized in terms of the chronic accessibility of moral knowledge structures.

Abstract:
In this thesis, a new feature detector is proposed. The new features are edgecorners located on the contours of a studied image. These points are edge pointswhere a deviation in the edge direction occurs. In addition, they are repeatable versussimilarity, affine transformations and also robust to noise at the boundaries of theobject's image. Due to their repeatability, these corners are used in a shape recognitionapplication. Also, a smaller set of corners called "Dominant Corners" or "DCs" isextracted form the original set of corners using a new proposed polygonalapproximation algorithm. These DCs form the vertices of a polygon that bestapproximate their contour. Two applications using the edge corners are alsodeveloped. The first one is an image registration application that forms invariantprimitives using the DCs. The second application is a word recognition applicationwhere the edge corners located on the characters contours are used in a simultaneoussegmentation/recognition process to recognize the characters in a deformed wordimage

Sadeque, Abdus. "Genetic mapping of noodle quality characters and rust resistance in hexaploid wheat." University of Sydney, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/3795.

Abstract:
Doctor of Philosophy
Polyphenol oxidase (PPO) catalyses undesirable darkening in wheat products such as Asian noodles. Genetic variation for PPO activity is characterized in bread wheat. Australian wheat breeding programmes recognize that reduced PPO activity is an important quality target. Despite this interest from breeders, no varieties possessing extremely low and null PPO activity exist. The development of null PPO wheat varieties is dependant on an understanding of the genetic control of the null phenotype. Knowledge of these factors will accelerate efforts to develop them. The inheritance of PPO activity was investigated in two populations that were derived from hybrids between a null PPO genotype and Australian wheat varieties Lang and QAlBis. Observed genetic ratios were consistent with two and three gene control, respectively in these populations. QTL mapping was performed in the QALBis x VAW08-A17 population. The Diversity Array Technology (DArT) approach was employed to genotype the QALBis x VAW08-A17 population. Three highly significant QTLs that control PPO activity were identified on chromosomes 2AL, 2BS and 2DL. Close associations between PPO activity and DArT marker loci wPt-7024, wPt-0094 and wPt-2544 were observed, respectively. Collectively, these loci explained 74% of the observed variation in PPO activity across seasons. Significant QTLs on chromosomes 1B and 3B were also identified that together explained an additional 17% of variation in PPO activity. The relationship between PPO activity and yellow alkaline noodles (YAN) colour stability parameters was investigated in a DM5637*B8 x H45 doubled haploid population. PPO activity and changes in YAN brightness (ΔL* 0-24h) and yellowness (Δb* 0-24h) in both seasons were analysed. Quantitative trait analyses of PPO activity, flour yellowness (b*) and YAN colour stability was also conducted in this population. QTL mapping of variation in PPO activity in the DM5637*B8 x H45 DH population identified a highly significant QTL on chromosome 2AL, which explained 52% of the observed variation across seasons. Regression analysis identified that wPt-7024 was highly significantly associated with PPO activity in this population. A highly significant association between this marker and PPO was also identified in the QALBis x VAW08-A17 population. Collectively, the three identified QTLs (on chromosomes 2AL, 7A and 7B) explained 71% of variation in PPO activity across seasons. A highly significant (P<0.001) QTL on chromosome 2B along with significant (P<0.01) QTLs on the chromosomes 1A, 3B, 4B and 5B were found to control flour yellowness. The QTLs on 2B, 4B and 5B were detected in both seasons analysed and accounted for 90% of variation in flour b* across seasons. The study on YAN colour stability located two highly significant (P<0.001) QTLs and two significant (P<0.01) QTLs that controlled the change in brightness of yellow alkaline noodle. The 2A QTL accounted for 64% of observed variation across seasons. It was in the same location as the PPO QTL and shared a common closest marker wPt-7024. Only one significant QTL for YAN a* (0-24h) was identified. It accounted for 12% of variation across seasons and was only detected in one season. One highly significant (P<0.001) QTL and two significant (P<0.01) QTLs were identified that controlled the change in yellowness of yellow alkaline noodle. The 2A QTL accounted for 68% of observed variation across seasons. The location of this QTL corresponded with that of 2A QTLs for PPO activity and L* of YAN in this study. Furthermore, wPt-7024 was also identified as the marker with the most significant association with L*. The identification of a correlation between the characters and a common location of a highly significant QTL for each of these characters indicates that it is likely that PPO activity is directly responsible for a large proportion of the changes in brightness and yellowness of YAN. QTLs for L* and b* of YAN were detected in a common location on chromosome 1A. However, no corresponding QTL was identified that controls PPO activity, highlighting the complexity of the relationship between these traits. Resistance to three rust pathogens (Puccinia graminis, Puccinia striiformis, and Puccinia triticina) was also investigated in the DM5637*B8 x H45 DH population because they are major yield limiting diseases in wheat. Disease response data at the seedling stage were converted to genotypic scores for rust genes Sr24/Lr24, Sr36, Lr13 and Yr7 to construct a genetic linkage map. No recombination was observed between rust resistance genes Sr36, Lr13 and Yr7 in this DH population. Therefore, these genes mapped in the same position on chromosome 2B. The Lr24/Sr24 locus was incorporated into the chromosome 3D map. Interval mapping analysis identified QTLs on chromosomes 2B, 3B, 4B and 5B that control adult plant resistance (APR) to stripe rust. Two QTLs on chromosomes 2B and 3D were identified that controlled APR to leaf rust in this DH population.

Abstract:
Background: Taxonomic descriptions are traditionally composed in natural language and published in a format that cannot be directly used by computers. The Exploring Taxon Concepts (ETC) project has been developing a set of web-based software tools that convert morphological descriptions published in telegraphic style to character data that can be reused and repurposed. This paper introduces the first semi-automated pipeline, to our knowledge, that converts morphological descriptions into taxon-character matrices to support systematics and evolutionary biology research. We then demonstrate and evaluate the use of the ETC Input Creation - Text Capture - Matrix Generation pipeline to generate body part measurement matrices from a set of 188 spider morphological descriptions and report the findings. Results: From the given set of spider taxonomic publications, two versions of input (original and normalized) were generated and used by the ETC Text Capture and ETC Matrix Generation tools. The tools produced two corresponding spider body part measurement matrices, and the matrix from the normalized input was found to be much more similar to a gold standard matrix hand-curated by the scientist co-authors. Special conventions utilized in the original descriptions (e.g., the omission of measurement units) were attributed to the lower performance of using the original input. The results show that simple normalization of the description text greatly increased the quality of the machine-generated matrix and reduced edit effort. The machine-generated matrix also helped identify issues in the gold standard matrix. Conclusions: ETC Text Capture and ETC Matrix Generation are low-barrier and effective tools for extracting measurement values from spider taxonomic descriptions and are more effective when the descriptions are self-contained. Special conventions that make the description text less self contained challenge automated extraction of data from biodiversity descriptions and hinder the automated reuse of the published knowledge. The tools will be updated to support new requirements revealed in this case study.

The text brings the analysis of aspects of the literary discourse as the processes of construction of the scenes and the magical universe, in which the narratives of Marina Colasanti are realized, having as it shows the tales of the works Doze reis e a moca no labirinto do vento (2006): "The woman ramada", Uma ideia toda azul (2006): "Beyond the frame", "Between the leaves of green ó" and "Yarn after yarn". The general and specific objectives are to highlight and distinguish the encompassing and generic scenes present in the narratives, to identify the nature of the verbal sign in its relation to the nonverbal sign, and to analyze intertext resources, paratext, among others, as an artistic procedure. The narrative plans are approached, in which the characters are realized mimically, starting from the initial assumption formulated by Dominique Maingueneau. Non-verbal language is an invitation to read verbal language and vice versa. Both are associated with the signs that are constructed through the textual writing: loom and fabric. They can be seen now either explicitly or implicitly, and put in the service of a power that is realized by the act of reading. Thus, in the narrative text, there are traces of a speech in which the text is staged.

This research mainly focuses on the trend of shōnen comics in recent years. This article examines the interactive impact of two different types of character traits and narrative on character identification and empathy. There are two types of identification which is wishful and similarity identification. At the same time, empathy is mediator of character traits and identification to realize the relationship of wishful and similarity identification with empathy. In addition, for understanding the possibile influence of reader, perceived realism is moderator of character traits and identification. Experimental design is adopted to achieve the aim of this article. The result shows that the audience’s wishful indentification with simple character is higher than with complex character in both narrative types, and similarity identification with simple character is also higher than complex character. More analysis found that the audience’s wishful indentification with simple character is as high as with complex character in the happy and unhappy narrative. Another side, it’s not high that the audience’s wishful and similarity identification with complex character, but when complex character is in happy narrative, there is high wishful identification. Besides, empathy is partly mediation of character traits and wishful identification, but is complete mediation of character traits and similarity identification. Finally, perceived realism isn’t the moderation of character traits and wishful identification and similatity identification.

Previous online‐game research has mostly focused on gamers’ habits, interface design and style of games, and the social scenarios in the games, only little on the correlation between gamers’ personality traits and the game characters they create, hardly on the comparison on image perception from gamers themselves to others. With the rise of social online games in recent years, it has been more significant that the game character became a representative of the gamer in the game world. In our research, in order to proof of the existence of perceptual differences on game character image between gamers and others, we have conducted a cross‐comparison on character image perception among different user groups. Besides, the correlations between role position, character’s gender setting and gamers’ gender, personality traits and role image were studied in this research. The study was divided into two phases, where in the first phase we interviewed gamers with FFM personality survey, and collected the photos, information about the gender and role position of the pet characters they created in the Pet Society game of Facebook. We also asked each gamer to rate the image of the pet created by himself. In the second phase, we had another batch of participants to rate the image of pet photos from the first phase. After the cross‐comparison, the results from the statistical analysis are shown as below: According to the result of the FFM personality survey, gamers can be divided into 4 types which are (1) introverted‐cautious type; (2) calm‐hardworking type; (3) extroverted‐enthusiastic type and (4) excursive‐sentimental type. And the adjectives of image perception can be summarized into four main factors which are (1) right side factor; (2) active factor; (3) smart factor and (4) Kuso factor. Right side factor includes images such as friendly, righteous, calm‐steady, cute, neat and organized. Active factor consists of unique, tough, fashionable, and vivacious and the smart factor includes smart and witty image. The results from the cross‐comparison of the self‐evaluation and others’ evaluation on the pet image created by gamers of the four personality types have shown that almost all the gamers do not expect the right side factor and active factor of the game character they created to be negative. It is found that while the gamers of introverted‐cautious types tend to create their pets with negative image in active factor and Kuso factor, pets created by gamers of calm‐hardworking types are expected to have right side image. Besides, gamers of extroverted‐enthusiastic type want created their pets with active, smart and Kuso image. On the contrary, gamers of excursive‐sentimental type don’t want their pets to show these images. There is the least image perception difference among the pets created by gamers of introverted‐cautious type and the most among the ones created by gamers of excursive‐sentimental type. The findings suggested that gamers of excursive‐sentimental iii type often created pets with expected image others do not recognize with. Regarding the character gender setting, there are more female gamers who tend to create characters with opposite gender. It is shown that gender switching has a significant effect on image of Kuso factor, that is to say if a male gamer plays a male role, a Kuso pet would most likely be created, whereas if he plays a female role, he would tend to create a relative serious pet. In the aspect of role position setting, it is the most obvious that gamers of extroverted‐enthusiastic type may create their pets as fantasy roles, whereas gamers of the calm‐hardworking type are likely to treat their characters as companions.

Kafka is one of the most influential twentieth-century writers. "A Hunger Artist" was the piece that Kafka treasured most. The book describes a man who fasted for a living by fasting for forty days in a cage as his performance. "A Hunger Artist" is a fictional character. Does he exist in the real world? What are his character traits and their origins? The character of "A Hunger Artist" is caused by“Spirit of Hunger”. Character is how a person relates to his environment. It is his way of living. A human being has spirit, soul and body. Spirit fills the whole being and has different functions from soul. Henri Bergson's intuition concept reflects one of spirit's functions and makes an excellent explanation and philosophical understanding of it. The experience of spirit is mystical yet surely not abstract or unreal. If the wounded spirit of "A Hunger Artist" leads to his spiritual hunger, it can be called deficiency or lacking. However, if this stimulates strong vitality by hunger, it would be productive or creative. Kafka, Nietzsche, Steve Jobs are " A Hunger Artist "! They have deep sense of hunger for writing, philosophy and creativity. Due to their extreme perfectionism, they are always living in extreme tension and fear. The Bible emphasizes the importance of the role of a father as this directly influences a person's life. If a child could not get the source of his/her life's motivation from his/her parents, then his/her spirit would be hungry and destroyed. However, if the wounded spirit is healed and the function restored, Gilles Deleuze's body without organs will be able to escape, schizophrenia would extricate boundaries, the desire machine would produce and create.

Rivera, Gustavo. "Campaign advertising and its effects : the case of Mexico." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/24871.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation explains how and under what conditions voters are affected by campaign advertising, taking particular account of the conditioning role played by political knowledge and ad tone. It builds on psychological research showing that people make regular mistakes in attribution, evaluation, and decision making; that they tend to give greater weight to negative than to equally credible positive information; that they better match their political choices with their interests and values when they are more politically knowledgeable; and that cognitive shortcuts cannot fully compensate for meager political knowledge. I introduce a psychological theory of how individuals react to campaign advertising in light of: (1) their political knowledge and (2) their natural impulse to give greater weight to negative information (i.e., negativity bias). Using data from an original laboratory experiment conducted in Mexico City in 2012 and from the 2006 Mexico Panel Study, I examine the effect of campaign advertising on the attribution of candidates' character traits, the evaluation of candidates' policy proposals, and vote intentions. I show that campaign advertising's effects on the attribution of candidates' character traits and the evaluation of their policy proposals are conditioned by the voter's degree of political knowledge and the ad's tone (negative or positive). I also show that campaign advertising has a significant, indirect effect on vote intentions through its effect on the attribution of candidates' character traits and the evaluation of their policy proposals. Finally, I explain why negative advertising has systematically bigger effects on voting behavior than equivalent positive advertising. I look at the case of Mexico to shed light on the effects of campaign advertising in developing democracies. Since most academic research has looked at the United States, this thesis intends to deepen our understanding of campaign advertising in comparative perspective, looking at a country where the thinness of party identification, the ambiguity of issue ownership, and the novelty of the party system renders voters more susceptible to information in campaign advertising.

Ovcharuk L. V. Personal qualities as a precondition for effective distribution . – Manuscript. Thesis for obtaining the Degree of Master of Psychology, specialty 053 – Ternopil Ivan Puluj National Technical University. – Ternopil, 2020. The master's thesis reveals the peculiarities of the manifestations of personal qualities, becomes relevant and more important in the professional growth and formation of the distributor, determining not only the importance and intensity of their efforts, but also the vector and direction of self-development. A whole range of practical issues of optimizing the professional training of distributors is most successfully solved in the study of personal qualities of the individual and in the process of forming systemic links inside the integrity of the individual psyche. Thus, the system of our research is based on understanding the personal qualities of the individual, which is a prerequisite for the effective operation of the future professional in the system "person-to-person" in the process of which both changes and development take place. The thesis proposes and validates the connection between personal and socio-psychological qualities in the activities of distributors. A theoretical review of scientific achievements on the problem of studying the personal qualities of distributors is done and the extent of its development is determined. The main personal qualities of the distributor that contribute to his activity are analysed and distinguished. The interrelationship of personal qualities of distributors with different levels of individual characteristics is found out. A training program for the development of personal qualities of distributors for effective activity has been developed and tested. Thus, the results of experimental research make it possible to state that activities aimed at the formation of personal qualities are necessary for successful activities. It was with the help of the activities used in the trainings that the subjects had the opportunity to learn and distinguish their own character traits, as well as to identify the qualities that need to be developed and used for successful and professional distribution. The effectiveness of the program "Formation of personal qualities of counsellors for their successful activities" is evaluated; the exercises for trainings are proposed and systematized. They are considered to be the unique material of personal development, which enriches their understanding of personal traits and qualities, abilities to self-control while living their own lives as well as serve as a basis for further stimulation of professional development.

The present study is intended to look into the current online game experiences of junior high school students, to probe into the interrelationship among junior high school students’ online game experiences, character traits and interpersonal relationship. The study is conducted by means of questionnaire survey, taking 1,031 students studying in junior high schools in Wanhua District, Taipei in the first semester, Academic Year 2007 as the samples. We aim at “online game experiences”, “character traits rating scale” and “interpersonal relationship rating scale” as the study tools. We processed the findings yielded in the questionnaire survey through descriptive statistics, Chi-Square Test, factor analysis, cluster analysis, one way ANOVA, t-test and canonical correlation analysis. The subject study primarily yielded the key findings below: 1. Students not accompanied by parents most of the time tend to be lingering on cyber café. 2. Students with more petty easy cash on hand tend to indulge themselves in online games beyond restraint. 3. Students more open-minded in character traits are more prone to online games. 4. Students who have been in touch with online game longer, the more frequent they spent on online games, and students with longer online games time on average tend to be in closer interpersonal interactions with online games counterparts. 5. Students capable of restraining themselves on spending time on online games will be in better ties with parents. 6. Students capable of restraining themselves on spending money on online games will be in better ties with parents. 7. Students more sensitive and friendly in character traits are more inclined to developing interrelationship with peers. 8. Students more practical and steady in character traits tend to maintain better ties with parents. On the grounds of aforementioned key findings and results yielded in the study, we offer practical proposals which should be handy reference to parents, schoolteachers, social workers and future researches.
