Abstract:
Displaying believable emotional reactions in virtual characters is required in applications ranging from virtual-reality trainers to video games. Manual scripting is the most frequently used method and enables an arbitrarily high fidelity of the emotions displayed. However, scripting is labour intense and greatly reduces the scope of emotions displayed and emotionally affected behavior in virtual characters. As a result, only a few virtual characters can display believable emotions and only in pre-scripted encounters. In this paper we implement and evaluate a lightweight algorithm for procedurally controlling both emotionally affected behavior and emotional appearance of a virtual character. The algorithm is based on two psychological models of emotions: conservation of resources and appraisal. The former component controls emotionally affected behavior of a virtual character whereas the latter generates explicit numeric descriptors of the character's emotions which can be used to drive the character's appearance. We implement the algorithm in a simple testbed and compare it to two baseline approaches via a user study. Human participants judged the emotions displayed by the algorithm to be more believable than those of the baselines.

Abstract:
This research aimed to analyze the character of Santiago in resolution part of the novel “The Old Man and The Sea” by Ernest Hemingway using SFL Appraisal Theory. From the data analysis, it was found that attitude (affect) and graduation (force) dominated the appraisal items in the resolution part of “The Old Man and The Sea”. In total there were 34 appraisal items found. There were 11 appraisal items on affect found (29.72%), 3 items on judgment (8.1%), 1 item on appreciation (2.7%), 5 items on engagement (13.5%) and 17 items on graduation (45.94%). Those expressions developed from character revelation through dialogue and narration on setting, and those difference marks significant importance of character’s development in the resolution part. The character revelations found in the resolution part are: reflective, affectionate (caring and loving), humble, wise, realistic, and optimistic. This research showed the contribution of appraisal theory, especially attitude and graduation to develop a character in fiction, to be more exact, vivid, and naturally convincing. In the context of language teaching, the awareness of linguistics expression, language evaluations on meanings and values are relevant to be introduced from early to get better understanding of the language.

Abstract:
The hypothesis that there is an inextricable link between comic book superheroes and suffering would, to anyone with a cursory knowledge of superhero characters found in DC, Marvel, Image, Wildstorm and other houses, and their histories, ostensibly seem valid. This validity depends on which character one is applying said hypothesis to; the psychological and physical suffering of a Batman being more acceptable as such than that of a Plastic Man, for example. However, using DC Comics character Superman as a case study, this paper explores the inextricable link between Otherness, power, and suffering within the remit of the character's mythos. In order to do so, this paper refers to psychoanalytic concepts elaborated by Sigmund Freud in his text Beyond the Pleasure Principle (1922) as a way of demonstrating that despite the character's conventional appraisal as a positivist humanistic symbol of pure altruism, an insuperable, unimpeachable symbol of selflessness and good morality, there is in fact a fundamental link between Superman's 'tridentity' of selves (Clark Kent/Kal-El/Superman), the character's own suffering, and human suffering on a terrestrial scale, as represented within the numerous realities of the DC Comics Multiverse.

Abstract:
In spite of the supernatural trappings of Charles Dickens's most famous work, A Christmas Carol, critics from G. K. Chesterton to Edmund Wilson have found its equally famous protagonist, Ebenezer Scrooge, to be a real character, more fleshed-out and compelling than many of the characters of Dickens's longer, presumably more “serious” novels. Much of the reaction to A Christmas Carol and its protean anti-hero can be summarized by Stephen Prickett's succinct appraisal in his seminal study, Victorian Fantasy: “The strength of A Christmas Carol lies quite simply in its psychological credibility” (54). Scrooge is a character we can believe in, a character that, as Margaret Atwood suggests, “remains fresh and vital. ‘Scrooge Lives!’ we might write on our T-shirts” (xiii).

Abstract:
The number of Indonesian novels translated into various foreign languages, especially English, requires a deeper study so that illegibility and unacceptableness will not occur in conveying the true meaning in the source language. This study examines the disclosure of the main character in the novel Bumi Manusia by Pramoedya Ananta Toer which was translated into English This Earth of Mankind using Appraisal theory in Functional Systemic Linguistics (LSF) perspective which includes the culture of the source language in it. The results of the analysis show that there is a shift in appraisal or a shift in the type of appraisal in the depiction of the main character in the novel in the source language (Indonesian) with the depiction of the character in the target language (English) as seen in the change in the choice of expression (words or phrases) in the target language. This can be interpreted that in the world of translation, the choice of equivalent target language words will always change according to acceptance with the culture and norms that apply to the target language.

Abstract:
Emotional synthetic characters are able to evaluate (appraise) events as positive or negative with their emotional states being triggered by several factors. Currently, the vast majority of models for appraisal in synthetic characters consider factors related to the goals and preferences of the characters. We argue that appraisals that only take into consideration these "personal" factors are incomplete as other more social factors, such as the normative and the social context, including in-group and out-group relations, should be considered as well. Without them, moral emotions such as shame cannot be appraised, limiting the believability of the characters in certain situations. We present a model for the appraisal of characters' actions that evaluates whether actions by in-group and out-group members which conform, or not, to social norms generate different emotions depending on the social relations between the characters. The model was then implemented in an architecture for virtual agents and evaluated with humans. Results suggest that the emotions generated by our model are perceived by the participants, taking into account the social context and that participants experienced very similar emotions, both in type and intensity, to the emotions appraised and generated by the characters.

Abstract:
Despite the development of sophisticated emotion models, game character facial animation is still often completed with laborious hand-controlled key framing, only marginally assisted by automation. Behavior trees and animation state machines are used mostly to manage animation transitions of physical business, like walking or lifting objects. Attempts at automated facial animation rely on discrete facial iconic emotion poses, thus resulting in mechanical “acting”. The techniques of acting instructor and theorist Sanford Meisner reveal a process of role development whose character model resembles components of Appraisal Theory. The similarity conjures an experiment to discover if an “emotion engine” and workflow method can model the emotions of an autonomous animated character using actor-centric techniques. Success would allow an animation director to autonomously animate a character’s face with the subtlety of gradient expressions. Using a head-shot video stream of one of two actors performing a structured Meisner-esque improvisation as the primary data source, this research demonstrates the viability of an actor-centric workflow to create an autonomous facial animation system.

Abstract:
In this paper we report about the use of computer generated affect to control body and mind of cognitively modeled virtual characters. We use the computational model of affect ALMA that is able to simulate three different affect types in real-time. The computation of affect is based on a novel approach of an appraisal language. Both the use of elements of the appraisal language and the simulation of different affect types has been evaluated. Affect is used to control facial expressions, facial complexions, affective animations, posture, and idle behavior on the body layer and the selection of dialogue strategies on the mind layer. To enable a fine-grained control of these aspects a Player Markup Language (PML) has been developed. The PML is player-independent and allows a sophisticated control of character actions coordinated by high-level temporal constraints. An Action Encoder module maps the output of ALMA to PML actions using affect display rules. These actions drive the real-time rendering of affect, gesture and speech parameters of virtual characters, which we call Virtual Humans.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the problem of studying the modification of linguistic means of phraseological units, namely comparative references, indicated by the author's individuality in Ukrainian poetry. Transformation undergoes different in origin and stylistic color comparative appeals. The most widespread transformations of comparative returns have been identified and characterized, and the peculiarity of such a change is the author's desire to increase the expressiveness of the language, including the creation of comic effect through various linguistic means. The objects of the comparisons under study are distinguished by thematic diversity. The semantics of the comparative reference itself or the contractual comparative part does not contain irony. The comic effect only arises when the comparison with the context, with the subject of comparison. In the field of critical appraisal and, as a result, irony, people, their demeanor, behavior, character, and activity fall. Animals, humans, biblical characters, etc. are the objects of comparative aphorisms. The originality and diversity of Neddy Nezhdan's individually-authorial comparisons mark the poet's moral and ethical appraisal, reflecting her lyrical heroine's attitude to men's perceptions, their ironic appraisal of relationships with them.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to surface and discuss issues associated with employee performance appraisal as a multi-staged social interaction reportedly the butt of managerial dissatisfaction, especially when used to inform decisions around pay and other rewards. Design/methodology/approach To substantiate the territory, existing management-based evidence from the published literature is curated and discussed to frame issues for investigation under the rubric of performance appraisal as an activity that may be understood as combining interaction between forms of administrative, social and psychologically oriented control. Primary evidence, drawn from recent research sponsored by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, which combines data sets informed by a survey of HR specialists and a follow-on focus group, is then used to illustrate views on relevant themes across a sample of UK-based private, public and third sector organizations (n=715). Findings A significant number of organizations apply performance appraisal approaches, somewhat mediated by sector and size, and in turn use the results to inform various forms of HRM decision making – in particular reward management. While claims have been circulating in popular media suggesting the widespread abandonment of traditional performance appraisal, and while the study finds dissatisfaction regarding the utility of existing bureaucratic elements of appraisal mechanisms, the position is more nuanced. Practical implications Corporate management attention is drawn to choices of the extent to which they are investing in building line management capabilities to address the consequences of policy decisions to amplify the importance of informal alongside formal performance management processes, and potential reward decision making, mindful of the indeterminate character of the employment relationship and its dynamic, socially constructed character. Social implications Performance appraisal may benefit from re-interpreting the balance between emphasis on administrative, social and self-control, given changing expectations among workforce members and those who evaluate organizational effectiveness in contemporary society, and the ongoing contested nature of organizational control. Originality/value Employee performance appraisal as an institutional process central to organizational control systems is a topic of interest to both organizational effectiveness academics and the managerial practitioners they study. Using data that broadly represent recent developments in managerial practice across “UK plc”, the paper informs reflection on theory and practice.

Argumentation theorists are beginning to think of ad hominem arguments as generally legitimate. Virtue argumentation theorists argue that a character trait approach to argument appraisal can explain why ad hominems would are legitimate, when they are legitimate. But I argue that we do not need to appeal to virtue argumentation theory to explain the legitimacy of ad hominem arguments; a more straightforward evidentialist approach to argument appraisal is also committed to their legitimacy. I also argue that virtue argumentation theory faces some important problems, and that whereas the virtue-theoretic approach in epistemology is (arguably) well-motivated, that motivation does not carry over to virtue argumentation theory.

AbstractIn this paper, I seek to articulate a positive role for the body in our eschatological joy in God. I draw on Augustine's thought to argue that the body makes a positive contribution to our joy in God by being a pedagogy for our imaginations, training us to imagine the beautiful character of God in Christ through embodiment. While Augustine might seem like a surprising choice for this task, I argue that his concepts of ubique totus and the totus Christus provide fertile soil for the growth of an eschatological theology of the body.

AbstractThis article makes a preliminary attempt to account for the stroke systems of Chinese characters in simplified regular script. The framework utilized is the three meta-functions in Systemic Functional Linguistics. The description observes the cases from the perspectives of the experiential, appraisal (aesthetic), and thematic semiosis of strokes and their constitutional segments to figure out the relevant systems: the line system and the point system. This process witnesses comparisons to seek, in brief though, the traces and origins of stroke development along evolution, and hence the straightening of lines and squaring of character formation. This is the first step towards a rank model of Chinese writing, the whole project of which will highlight a way to study other writing systems in the semiotic respect.

Abstract:
The main objective of this research is to identify the women’s leadership model diffused through management literature in order to determine if there is a pre-eminence of essentialist and exclusionary principles in its sense. Through the Appraisal Theory and by analyzing a recent management literature sample, the values associated with the women’s leadership model are identified, and a conclusion about their essentialist character is reached. The initial hypothesis is that the women’s leadership model, disseminated to professional women through management literature, contains an essentialist character that reproduces gender dichotomies and the rational homo oeconomicus model by hindering gender equality and the development of egalitarian leadership models from being accomplished.

AbstractThe main characteristics of public space are accessibility and usability for all citizens. Current developments primarily observed in cities, however, point to the fact that the distinction between public and private is becoming blurred. Instead urban spaces of hybrid character are emerging. Spaces with public functions like train stations, parks or pedestrian areas change character; semi-private spaces like malls or plazas expand. In order to obtain a realistic assessment of these developments the paper offers a critical appraisal of recent privatization trends followed by a brief systematization. After a discussion of feasible reasons for the loss of public space, the paper considers potential implications for the future of citizenship.

Abstract:
This article aims to find out the planning, implementation and evaluation of Strengthening Character Education (SCE) in SMPN 01 Kediri in realizing Islamic values. Islamic education is an effort to actualize the attributes of perfection that have been bestowed by Allah to humans. Strengthening Character Education (SCE) is one way to actualize Islamic values through various activities, intra-curricular, extra-curricular, and non-curricular. This article was written based on the results of a qualitative case study. This article concludes that the implementation of SCE in SMPN 01 Kota in realizing Islamic values, in general, has already been carried out and several aspects need to be improved. Planning for SCE activities in realizing Islamic values needs to be developed in several aspects, namely: (1) there is a need to develop SCE objective indicators, (2) additional activities need to be developed to develop the other three characters in SCE, in order to balance the characters in SCE such as integrity, mutual cooperation, and independence, and (3) SCE activities need to be developed through co-curricular activities, bearing in mind that SCE activities are still focused into extra-curricular activities. The implementation of SCE activities in realizing Islamic values requires the role of parents because they are the first education and as supervisors for their children outside of school. It is also found that evaluating SCE activities in realizing Islamic values had not used measurable appraisal instruments, but direct observation instead.

Abstract:
Cladistic relationships of Trilobita, Naraoiidae (five ingroup taxa), Helmetiida (five ingroup taxa), Xandarellida, and the Cambrian arachnates Retifacies, Sinoburius, Emeraldella, and Sidneyia are investigated based on 29 characters. Documentation of appendage morphology and other ventral structures in Saperion from the Chengjiang fauna permits an appraisal of helmetiid relationships. A monophyletic Trilobita [=“Olenellida” (Emuellida + Eutrilobita)] is defined by numerous synapomorphies, including exoskeletal calcification and dorsal eyes with calcified lenses and circumocular sutures. Helmetiida is a robust clade, resolved as (Helmetiidae (Tegopeltidae (Saperiidae + Skioldiidae))). Naraoiid monophyly is well-supported, but neither a naraoiid-trilobite nor a naraoiid-Retifacies clade are parsimonious, the latter grouping (“Nectopleura”) being explicitly paraphyletic. A sister group relationship between Xandarellida and Sinoburius is endorsed, although character support is novel compared to previous groupings of these taxa. The fourth postantennal limb pair in trilobites, naraoiids, and apparently helmetiids is based beneath the cephalothoracic articulation. Reweighted characters favor Trilobita and Helmetiida as closest relatives, with Petalopleura and then Naraoiidae as sister groups.

Abstract:
This study discusses the appraisal of the attitude and graduation (force) subsystem based on corpus linguistics. The Appraisal Theory proposed by Martin and White (2005) relates to the expression of the speaker's/writer's feelings, particularly the evaluation of someone’s emotional reactions, attitude, and objects. The evaluation can be positive or negative. Meanwhile, graduation is associated with a scale of evaluation involving attitude. The aims of this study are: First, to find out what kind of attitude subsystem is found on the character Sherlock Holmes in the novel The Valley of Fear by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1915) and the translated version Misteri Lembah Ketakutan by Ismanto, Ahmad Asnawi and Sutrisno published by Indolestari ( 2021). Second, to find out how the translation shift occurred on the character, it can be seen from the graduation force (scale up and scale down). This research applies descriptive qualitative research method using corpus linguistics and critical discourse analysis as research design. The critical discourse analysis approach is used to find out what types of attitudes appeare in the ST and TT of the novels and to find out the shift of graduation of the translated novel. Meanwhile, the linguistic corpus approach is used to calculate the frequency of appraisals apprear in the ST and TT. The data used in this study is a parallel corpus using the Sketch Engine tool; clauses containing attitude and graduation by applying purposive sampling of the first four chapters of the novel because in these chapters, the main character Sherlock Holmes often evaluates persons, object, or behavior. The clause is used as the unit of analysis because the clause is an important unit in grammatical meaning and in terms of the pattern will be in line with the lower unit, namely the phrase. The corpus information on the ST is; 15,353 tokens, 12,858 words, and 1,000 clauses, while in TT there are 12,930, 10,974 words and 1,067 clauses. It was found that the number of attitude in ST and TT was the i.e. appreciation 47 (50%), judgment 24 (25.53%), and affect 23 (24.46%). Then, a shift in the translation of the graduation force was found in the attitude; the number scale up of ST turned scale down of TT was18 (Su → Sd) and the scale down of ST turned scale up in TT was17 (Sd → Su).

Abstract:
The aim of this review article is to reveal the cons and pros of ethical relativism, especially conventionalism. This article is written with the intention of showing some of the practical upshots of conventionalism without totally denying some of its virtues in a world where diversity of cultures and customs is apparent. The article inquires the question: Is ethical relativism tenable? The review article relies on reviewing secondary sources. What I am arguing in this article is that despite the attraction of ethical relativism as an intellectual weapon to fight against ethnocentrism and cultural intolerance, the view still goes against the idea of intercultural comparison, criticism and moral argumentation, so that it would have serious disastrous implication on practice, especially on the universal character of human rights and shutters all together any sort of moral progress and reform. The article concludes that we can set forth certain objective moral codes, discovered through rational intercultural dialogue and discussion which could be applied regardless of cultural specificities upon which cultural inter-comparison, discussion and moral argumentation is possible.

This paper draws on the Martinian interpretation of Systemic Functional Grammar (MARTIN 1992, MARTIN; ROSE 2007) to approach translation as interlingual reinstantiation (SOUZA, 2010), from an interpersonal stance. The goal of this investigation is to examine the representation of a character of the novel in the original text and its translations to cast light on the implications of semantic variation for reader positioning. The analysis is based on the Appraisal system (MARTIN; WHITE 2005) and the text chosen for this investigation is an excerpt of a chapter of British contemporary novel NW by Zadie Smith (2012), along with its Brazilian and Portuguese translations. The analysis shows greater and lesser variations, most of loading or polarity, in attitudes associated with the character.

Abstract:
This article is concerned with the tenure track (TT) model, which has become increasingly used to extend the period of early career academics’ probation from one to five years across the EU. This article focuses on the TT in Trinity College Dublin (TCD), the oldest and most prestigious university in Ireland, one where gender equality has been embedded more consistently and where the pace of change has been faster than in other Irish universities. Drawing on interviews with thirteen men and women in three faculties, all but one of whom had successfully achieved tenure, this article explores their acceptance of the TT model and the perceived relevance of gender. Men were more likely to accept the model and less likely to see it as gendered. Even those women who identified a lack of clarity around maternity leave and/or gender differences in negotiating ‘fixed’ starting salaries did not identify a systemic gender issue but blamed themselves. Women who were ‘outsiders’ to TCD and in the arts, humanities and social science faculty were most likely to be critical of the model. The findings suggest the importance of a cautionary appraisal of TT, even in institutions that have actively sought to enhance gender equality.
