Dionne, Jean-Philippe. "Chapman-Jouguet properties of heterogeneous explosives." Thesis, McGill University, 1996. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=24055.

Full text
Abstract:
The role of inert additives in the detonation characteristics of nitromethane-based heterogeneous explosives is investigated. Available experimental data on the detonation velocity are compared with theoretical CJ calculations using two different detonation codes (IDeX and Cheetah). IDeX uses the Theostar equation of state (EOS) for the fluid phase and the Murnaghan EOS for the solid phase while Cheetah uses the JCZ3-EOS for the fluid species and the OLD-EOS for the solid phase.
Large deviations are observed for heterogeneous explosives with a large mass fraction of inert material. This is credited to the different relaxation times of the various equilibration processes in the detonation zone, as well as the complex shock interactions between the fluid and solid phases. The equations of state used for the detonation products are found to have only a small effect on the equilibrium CJ state. A more realistic EOS for solids is proposed.

Day, Marisa. "Conrad Wise Chapman and the Mexican Landscape." VCU Scholars Compass, 2011. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/228.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis focuses on several paintings of the Mexican landscape produced by Conrad Wise Chapman (1842 – 1910) and held by the Valentine Richmond History Center in Richmond, Virginia. Chapman lived in Mexico from 1865 to 1867 and from 1883 to 1908 (with a few short absences), and during this period, produced a large number of landscapes, which are the subject of this thesis and will be considered as an amalgamation of both nineteenth-century Mexican landscape painting and traveler-art. It is the purpose of this study to demonstrate that Chapman’s artistic style embodies both classical components of landscape painting and characteristics commonly associated with traveler-art. This investigation of Chapman’s Mexican oeuvre provides significant insight into a period of the artist’s career that has long been neglected, and it examines several works of art not yet considered by scholars.

Dowling, Maureen F. "Chapman Friends School: A Study of the Creation of Culture." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/26407.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent years a body of literature on the topic of school culture has emerged, highlighting the importance of developing strong school cultures. My purpose was to explore the creation of culture in a new school by studying the school's core principles, leadership, history, practices, decision making, language, membership, environment, and critical events. The setting for this descriptive case study was Chapman Friends School - an alternative Quaker high school located in a mid-Atlantic state. Data-gathering techniques included: (a) weekly on-site observations, (b) formal interviews, (c) school publications and documents, and (d) the researcher's log. The data were analyzed with a thematic coding system based on the cultural components. Three factors were found to be critical in the creation of culture at Chapman Friends School: (a) core principles and the symbolic interactions whereby they were transmitted; (b) the charismatic, authentic leadership of the headmaster; and (c) the consensus-based standards for student membership. The creation of culture at Chapman Friends School was a process wherein school members sought to resolve problems and issues resulting from their conflicting expectations of what the school should be. The creation of culture at Chapman Friends School involved the development of a shared image of what the school should become. Finally, as indicated by previous researchers and supported in this study, a culture evolves over time. The findings expand the field of literature on the subject of school culture and provide insight for school leaders and educators seeking to create effective school cultures. Related topics for further study include: (a) student enrollment screening procedures which shape a school culture, (b) the effect of secular school leaders on the creation of culture in religious-based schools, (c) the effect of the absence of a Quaker majority in Quaker schools, and (d) alternative environmental options for school settings and their effect on school culture.

Bertheau, Gilles. Paris 3, 2002. http://www.theses.fr/2002PA030080.

Full text
Abstract:
At the turn of the seventeenth century, George Chapman's four French tragedies are one of the most significant testimonies on the political and philosophical mutations in the English society. Through the staging of the contemporary history of France under Henry III and Henry IV, Chapman presents a political system that was also favoured by James I in England: absolutism. But instead of focusing of the monarchs, the playwright highlights the personalities of a few exceptional subjects: Bussy D'Ambois, Byron, Clermont D'Ambois and Chabot. Chapman shows how they behave in a moment of political and personal crisis, which culminates in a conflict with the king. On the one hand, the author describes very ruthlessly a political reality entirely based upon on the free monarch's absolute will, on adulterated machiavellianism and on the concept of reason of State; on the other, he shows the subject's will to be autonomous while his personal aspirations and essential integrity threaten his political survival and even his life itself. The temptation to disobey the prince becomes very strong then, especially for the one who holds himself superior to the Law. Chapman considers this superiority as true; that is why he makes his protagonists heroes, whose greatness though goes together with defects and contradictions. The central element of the dignity of Chapman's heroes lies in their genuine gentility, combining physical qualities (like bravery), moral (integrity) and intellectual ones (learning). One may think that Chapman found in them the very example of what, speaking of Bussy, he calls the "absolute man". Nevertheless, in spite of his didactic approach to tragedy, one must acknowledge that his model is a failure and that none of his heroes survives the persecution of the envious Machiavellian villains that swarm in the royal Courts described by the playwright. Thence, this failure might be seen as a challenging the very notion of example itself

Abstract:
It is oftentimes difficult for students to transfer and use prior knowledge in one subject into another class. In the middle school setting, the math concepts that are needed to conduct many science labs are a challenge for students to complete, or students find it difficult to make connections through the problem solving component in a science activity. This study was implemented with a sixth grade class that has math and science as a block of time with the same teacher, (math 50 minutes and then science 50 minutes), and none of the students had individual education plans. The major focus of this study wanted to determine if using an integration of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) principles develops a deeper understanding of scaling and proportional reasoning by using interactive computer and online simulations (three lessons online for part of a unit called "Scale City"). This study also wanted to determine whether students would gain self confidence in both solving math problems as well as being more comfortable using simulations. Student attitude and confidence surveys were given pre and post treatment. At the beginning and end of each of the lessons, students completed a pre-and post-assessment. During days of the lesson where students used the interactive computer or online simulations, a brief end-of-the class feedback/reflection form was used to analyze possible fluctuations in confidence level using simulations and interactives as well as problem solving confidence levels. Data was triangulated and analyzed to determine results.

Abstract:
Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability throughout the world; ischemia is the most common form of stroke. Medical procedures such as cardio-pulmonary bypass surgery can cause ischemic stroke can be caused. There are no treatments to limit neural impairment following stroke. The current research investigates neuroprotection offered by treatment with a novel drug combination consisting of Simvastatinâ„¢, Gemfibrozilâ„¢, Troglitazoneâ„¢, and Spironolactoneâ„¢. Animals were treated with the drug cocktail three weeks proceeding and one week subsequent to surgery. Ischemic insult was induced by clamping the carotid arteries for 5 min. Sham subjects underwent similar surgical procedures, but the carotids were not clamped. Twenty-four hrs following the surgical procedure locomotor activity was monitored in an open field for 5 min. Seven to fourteen days following ischemia or the sham procedure animals were sacrificed and sections containing the hippocampal CA1 region were mounted on slides and stained with cresyl violet. The CA1 region was rated on a 4-point scale for level of damage. Rodents generally show increased locomotor activity following transient global ischemia in an open field. In our study, ischemic animals that received vehicle demonstrated increased activity relative to the animals that received the drug treatment on all behavioral measures. Ischemic animals that received vehicle treatment had significantly more neural damage in the hippocampal CA1 region than ischemic animals receiving the drug. The appearance of neurons in the CA1 hippocampal regions of animals in the sham condition was not significantly different from ischemic animals in the drug treatment condition. It is concluded that the drug treatment is effective in offering neuroprotection during transient global ischemia. The next step is to characterize the biochemical mechanisms behind the neuroprotection conferred by the drug treatment. Contrasting the protein expression levels of animals receiving the vehicle treatment with animals receiving the drug treatment following an ischemic insult will assist in elucidating these pathways. Predictions are made regarding the biochemical mechanisms affected by the drug treatment based on previous research on the biochemical pathways affected by each pharmaceutical.

Abstract:
Musical instruments are not static, unchanging objects. They are, instead, things that materially evolve in symmetry with human practices. Alterations to an instrument's design often attend to its ergonomic or expressive capacity, but sometimes an innovator causes an entirely new instrument to arise. One such instrument is the Chapman Stick. This instrument's history is closely intertwined with global currents that have evolved into virtual, online scenes. Virtuality obfuscates embodiment, but the Stick's world, like any instrument's, is optimally related in intercorporeal exchanges. Stickists circumvent real and virtual obstacles to engage the Stick world. Using an organology informed by the work of Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty, this study examines how the Chapman Stick, as a material "thing," speaks in and through a virtual, representational environment.

Phinney, Charles Lucas. "Innovation in Practice: Experiment and Improvisation in the Architecture of Henry Chapman Mercer." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/95050.

Full text
Abstract:
In the opening years of the 20th century, a furor of new and experimental techniques swept the architectural field. The materials and methods of building altered so rapidly that standards of architectural representation and the acts of construction they choreographed appeared for a time to exist without history or precedent. In chaotic times chaos seems all consuming; yet standards are soon established and modes of practice formalized. So it was with the advent of architectural modernity. The beginning of the century was a time of great experimentation and innovation, not only in architectural materials but in the tools and representations of architects, and the methods of building they described. In this exploration of the relationship between material innovation and architectural representation, we examine the case of the Pennsylvania artisan-scholar Henry Chapman Mercer (1856-1930), and his development of a unique method for construction in reinforced concrete and ceramic tiles of his own design. In the years between 1907 and 1916, Mercer built three buildings of increasing complexity and scale, using methods of fabrication he developed over the course of these constructions. His approach was experimental, innovative, and yet quite different from the prevailing currents in engineering and industry at that time. While Mercer has been studied as a decorator of tiles, as an archaeologist, and as a curator of one the first and finest collections of early American material culture, very little work has been completed on Mercer as architect-builder. In Mercer's building projects we see a scientific mind and an artistic maker explore and experiment freely, building a bridge between his seemingly disparate worlds: from the Arts and Crafts-inspired Moravian Pottery he founded, to the archaeologically rigorous collection of pre-industrial tools. Mercer focused with great intensity on implements and evidences of traditional craft activities, and it is his particular sensitivity to the traditions and forms of craft activity that renders his architectural activity unique, and pertinent to the question of innovation in method. At the center of his architectural activities, Mercer's construction notebooks, in which he worked out plans, details, and many of his most unique procedural innovations, illustrate a novel comportment of architect to architectural representation, and offer a story of how the making of architecture is, itself, made.

Perfection? - Recreating the Human is an exhibition of recent works of art by Orlan, Patricia Piccinini, Margi Geerlinks and Jake and Dinos Chapman. Each of the artists engages, in various ways, with issues relating to biotechnology and the body. The convergence of technology and the body arouses both utopian desires and dystopian nightmares; many of these desires and fears are prefigured in ancient myth and legend. The artists and artworks are therefore discussed with reference to reoccurring tropes from both ancient myth and science fiction.

Cox, Anne Cheney. "Comparative reproductive biology of two Florida pawpaws asimina reticulata chapman and asimina tetramera small." FIU Digital Commons, 1998. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/2656.

Full text
Abstract:
I investigated the phenology and breeding systems of two Florida endemic pawpaws, Asimina reticulata, widespread in peninsular Florida, and A. tetramera, a federally endangered species limited to two counties on the Atlantic Coastal Ridge. The purpose of this study was to determine if differences contribute to the rarity of Asimina tetramera compared with A. reticulata. The study was conducted in sand pine scrub sites with the largest populations of A. tetramera in the two counties. Flowering seasons differ for the two species. Both species are hermaphroditic and strongly protogynous. Pollination experiments show that neither species is autogamous and the primary breeding mechanism is outcrossing, although low levels of geitonogamous pollination occur in mature scrub habitats. High levels of inbreeding depression were noted in both species at both sites but inbreeding depression was relaxed the first year post-fire. Fruit set in mature habitats may be pollinator limited. I studied insects associated with the flowers in sand pine scrub habitat in southeastern Florida from 1994-1996. The most commonly represented orders were Coleoptera (25 spp.), Lepidoptera (3 spp.) and Hymenoptera (3 spp.). All Coleoptera were flower visitors; one species, Euphoria sepulchralis (Fabricius) (Scarabeaidae), visited flowers of the two Asimina species at both sites. Euryiides marcellus (Cramer) (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae) eggs and larvae were observed on both species of Asimina during each year of the study. Resource management techniques were applied to a mature sand pine scrub community in Jona than Dickinson State Park in southeastern Florida for the management of Asimina tetramera. Manipulations conducted in 1996 included combinations of fire and mechanical treatments. I measured effects of these treatments on flowering and fruit-set on A. tetramera and found the fire treatments, BURN and CUT&BURN, significantly increased flowering. Mechanical treatments cutting and mulching had no significant effect.

Abstract:
The present dissertation envisages the tragedies of george chapman from the perspective of the ideological and ethical choices of the author, in order to determine the main features of chapman's aesthetics. The first part of the study deals with the ideology of chapman, which is seen as a loss since, in a period of deep mutation, the poet remained attached to values of the past. This is particularly obvious in chapman's glorification of the old-style hero, a passionate character who is contrasted to a modern context seen by chapman as a source of moral relativism. The second part of the study draws the main lines of chapman's aesthetics : temporal and spatial disproportion, instability, movement and tension. The final picture of the hero is of a double nature : he is uncompleted, because his status as a hero is rendered impossible by the policy of the state, and he also tries to survive through acts of ostentation and transgression

Tate, Joseph Andrew. "O-aryl imidates, isoureas and thiocarbamates." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/20976.

Full text
Abstract:
Phenols are some of the most readily available and easily elaborated aromatic compounds, but the strength of the CAr-O bond hampers their conversion to highly sought CAr-N, CAr-S and CAr-C analogues. Attempts have therefore been made to establish new protocols for achieving such transformations by derivatising phenols with suitable CAr-O bond activating groups. In particular, investigations have focussed on the development of reactions with the potential to enable phenols to be conveniently converted to anilines. Towards this goal, the synthesis of O-aryl trihaloacetimidates was investigated with a view to probing their ability to rearrange to N-aryl trihaloacetamides via transition metal catalysis (Scheme 1). It was found that O-aryl trichloroacetimidates could be obtained from the base-catalysed reactions of phenols with trichloroacetonitrile, but only when electron-rich phenols were applied. In contrast, N-(4-methylphenyl)-O-aryl trifluoroacetimidates were generated in good yields from electron-rich and electron-poor phenols by their condensation with N-(4-methylphenyl)trifluoroacetimidoyl chloride. With these substrates in hand, a number of transition metal catalysts were screened for activity in the proposed rearrangement reactions, but the desired transformations were not achieved. As part of this screen, a novel mono-NHC palladium(II) precatalyst with the potential to be thermally activated was developed. Scheme 1 The proposed strategy for converting phenols to anilines. The hydroxide-catalysed rearrangement of O-aryl-N,N’-diisopropyl isoureas to N-aryl- N,N’-diisopropyl ureas was reported in 1983, but there have been no reported applications of this reaction to date. The reaction was therefore revisited with the intention of realising its unexplored synthetic potential. The reported hydroxide-catalysed rearrangement of O-phenyl-N,N’-diisopropyl isourea to N-phenyl-N,N’- diisopropyl urea was, however, discredited on the basis of 1H NMR and UV spectrometric analyses (Scheme 2). This isourea was instead, found to be converted to phenoxide and diisopropyl urea under the reported conditions. A detailed kinetic study revealed that the isourea was not directly hydrolysed, but underwent hydroxide-mediated elimination to produce phenoxide and diisopropyl carbodiimide. The hydrolysis of diisopropyl carbodiimide to diisopropyl urea then occurred in a slower, second step which was catalysed by hydroxide. Attempts to identify and synthesise N-heterocylcic isourea structures which were more disposed towards rearrangement were unsuccessful. Scheme 2 The reported and observed reactivity of O-phenyl-N,N’-diisopropyl isourea in aqueous base. Early attempts to use O-aryl-N,N’-dimethyl thiocarbamates as phenol-derived pseudohalides in palladium(0)-catalysed, CAr-C bond-forming cross-coupling reactions showed little promise due to the onset of their base-induced decomposition. However, the formation of a diaryl thioether side product was observed during these studies, leading to a preliminary investigation into the use of aryl thiocarbamates as hydrogen sulfide surrogates and thiophenol precursors in palladium(0)-catalysed C-S coupling reactions (Scheme 3). The promise of this approach was demonstrated by the synthesis of both symmetrical and unsymmetrical diaryl thioethers in the palladium(0)-catalysed couplings of O- and S-(4-trifluoromethyl)-N,N-dimethyl thiocarbamate with 1-bromo-4- fluorobenzene. Scheme 3 The preparation of diaryl thioethers from O-aryl thiocarbamates and aryl bromides via palladium(0) catalysis.

Purdy, Ross. "The development of John Wilbur Chapman's life and thought (1859-1918)." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/25267.

Full text
Abstract:
John Wilbur Chapman was one of the most prominent clergymen, church leaders and revivalists of the later nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. More than sixty million people attended his evangelistic campaigns worldwide. A study of his contributions shows that he dominated the evangelical landscape of America from 1906 to 1918. His campaigns in Canada and his subsequent world tours helped his fame spread internationally. The objective of the dissertation was to find out whether Chapman’s contributions to Evangelicalism were as strong as indicated by his reputation during his day and if he should be remembered only as a secondary figure in revivalism. Historians have treated Chapman mostly as one of Dwight L. Moody’s assistants and as a lesser colleague to some of Moody’s lieutenants. If Chapman was significant, why did his name disappear from historical research and why was he relegated to a lesser position than his accomplishments deserved? What were Chapman’s contributions and how far did he advance revivalism? The research conducted in this dissertation represents a decade of analysing archival materials, primary sources and secondary sources, including journals and newspaper articles. What was discovered was that J. Wilbur Chapman was more significant to the history of Evangelicalism than previously noted. An investigation of his work has reinforced an understanding of the concepts and techniques of later nineteenth-century evangelism and it has also revealed his contributions to the trajectory of revivalism. The study of Chapman's work also illuminates aspects of holiness, dispensationalism and social welfare during the Victorian and post-Victorian era.

The occult, which I define as a symbol set of natural terms derived from supernatural terms, employs a method of heuresis based on a metaphor-like process I call analogic extension. Traditional invention fell from use shortly after the Liberal Arts reforms of Peter Ramus, around 1550. Occult invention emerged nearly simultaneously, when Early Modern British authors began using occult symbols as tropes in what I refer to as the Occult Mode. I use six of these authors--George Chapman, William Shakespeare, John Donne, Abraham Cowley, John Dryden, and Jonathan Swift--as examples of how occult invention arises. In appropriating occult symbolism, authors in the Occult Mode began using the invention methods of the occult arts of magic, alchemy, astrology, and cabala to derive new meanings, transform language, develop characters and plots, and reorient social perspectives. As we learn in tracking Burke's project, occult invention combines the principles of Aristotle's rhetoric and metaphysics with the techniques and principles of the occult arts. Occult invention fell from use around the end of the eighteenth century, but its rhetorical influence reemerged through the work of Burke. In this study I seek to contextualize and explicate some of the literary sources and rhetorical implications of occult invention as an emergent field for further research.

Shan e colaboradores (SHAN, X.; YUAN, X.-F.; CHEN, H. "Kinetic theory representation of hydrodynamics: a way beyond the Navier-Stokes equation". "From the continuous to the lattice Boltzmann equation: The discretization problem and thermal models".

Abstract:
This thesis aimed at developing multi-scale models and computational methods for aerother-modynamics applications. The research on multi-scale models has focused on internal energy excitation and dissociation of molecular gases in atmospheric entry flows. The scope was two-fold: to gain insight into the dynamics of internal energy excitation and dissociation in the hydrodynamic regime and to develop reduced models for Computational Fluid Dynamics applications. The reduced models have been constructed by coarsening the resolution of a detailed rovibrational collisional model developed based on ab-initio data for the N2 (1Σ+g)-N (4Su) system provided by the Computational Quantum Chemistry Group at NASA Ames Research Center. Different mechanism reduction techniques have been proposed. Their appli-cation led to the formulation of conventional macroscopic multi-temperature models and vi-brational collisional models, and innovative energy bin models. The accuracy of the reduced models has been assessed by means of a systematic comparison with the predictions of the detailed rovibrational collisional model. Applications considered are inviscid flows behind normal shock waves, within converging-diverging nozzles and around axisymmetric bodies, and viscous flows along the stagnation-line of blunt bodies. The detailed rovibrational colli-sional model and the reduced models have been coupled to two flow solvers developed from scratch in FORTRAN 90 programming language (SHOCKING_F90 and SOLV-ER_FVMCC_F90). The results obtained have shown that the innovative energy bin models are able to reproduce the flow dynamics predicted by the detailed rovibrational collisional model with a noticeable benefit in terms of computing time. The energy bin models are also more accurate than the conventional multi-temperature and vibrational collisional models. The research on computational methods has focused on rarefied flows. The scope was to formu-late a deterministic numerical method for solving the Boltzmann equation in the case of multi-component gases with internal energy by accounting for both elastic and inelastic collisions. The numerical method, based on the weighted convolution structure of the Fourier trans-formed Boltzmann equation, is an extension of an existing spectral-Lagrangian method, valid for a mono-component gas without internal energy. During the development of the method, particular attention has been devoted to ensure the conservation of mass, momentum and en-ergy while evaluating the collision operators. Conservation is enforced through the solution of constrained optimization problems, formulated in a consistent manner with the collisional in-variants. The extended spectral-Lagrangian method has been implemented in a parallel com-putational tool (best; Boltzmann Equation Spectral Solver) written in C programming lan-guage. Applications considered are the time-evolution of an isochoric gaseous system initially set in a non-equilibrium state and the steady flow across a normal shock wave. The accuracy of the proposed numerical method has been assessed by comparing the moments extracted from the velocity distribution function with Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method predictions. In all the cases, an excellent agreement has been found. The computational results obtained for both space homogeneous and space inhomogeneous problems have also shown that the enforcement of conservation is mandatory for obtaining accurate numerical solutions.

Abstract:
In this thesis I argue that the three plays under consideration - Bussy D'Anbois, The Conspiracy and Tragedy of Charles Duke of Byron, and The Revenge of Bussy D'Ambois - illustrate Chapman's concern with the role of chivalry in England following the debacle of the Essex Rebel lion in 1601. My contention is that, for Chapman, the Essex Rebellion exposed the fragility and the inconsistencies of Elizabethan chivalry and the political threat represented by its preoccupation with martial values. I suggest that in his plays, Chapman sets out to deconstruct the myth of chivalry by exposing it as a romantic concept which is used by the martial nobility as a means of Emphasizing their political rights. The values of chivalry - prowess, honour, loyalty, generosity, courtesy and independence - are shown, by the plays, to be incompatible with the political ambitions of the nobility. By associating themselves with this mythical concept of chivalry, political figures cane to identify their factions with the values of chivalry. Chapman, I argue, shows haw the myth is established and then exposes it for what it is, by portraying his characters as unable to live up to their expected mythical ideals. Chivalry is stripped of its mythical trappings and exposed as militaristic, aggressive and politically motivated. The thesis is divided into five chapters. In the first, I consider Chapman alongside the Tacitean historians who were connected with the Essex circle in the 1590s and show how, in The Conspiracy and Tragedy of Charles Duke of Byron, the dramatist transformed the providentialist narrative of his source into a play with Tacitean connotations, emphasizing the relationship between chivalry and constitutional political theory. In the second chapter I consider Chapman's interest in chivalry and discuss generally the romantic concept of Elizabethan chivalry and its relationship with the political concerns of the nobility. In Chapters Three to Five I discuss Chapman's portrayal of chivalry and its political impliications.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Starting from definitions of desire borrowed from ancient philosophers (Plato, Aristotle), classical poets (Ovid), Christian theologians (Augustine, Thomas Aquinas), and physicians (from Galen to Robert Burton), this dissertation studies the representations of desire in Elizabethan narrative poetry from the 1590s, and more particularly in Shakespeare’s Venus and Adonis, Marlowe and Chapman’s Hero and Leander, and Spenser’s Faerie Queene (II and III). The guiding hypothesis is that desire determines the terms and images in which it is represented; it is therefore both a poetical object and a principle of literary creation. Using a rhetorical approach, I focus on stylistic devices linked with motion: metaphor and metonymy, but also figures of construction which play on word order, and figures such as allegory, which progressively unravel thought. Although desire does act as a commonplace in Early Modern texts, sharing the same language and the same locus does not necessarily entail physical communion for the bodies involved. The body of the beloved, enclosed upon itself and depicted as an untouchable work of art, is pitted against the lover’s organism, alive and exposed to contamination. The poem itself becomes permeable in relation to its social and political environment, in its use of sources, and in its compositional procedures. Desire articulates description and narration, leading the narrative forward but also backward, which suggests that mimesis can be a reversible process

Abstract:
Progress towards the miniaturization of increasingly advanced micro- and nano-electromechanical systems has highlighted the need for a better knowledge of the design of such devices. knowledge of micro-nano pipe flows is still mandatory. In field of energy power generation, as the systems are scaled down, the thermal efficiency of conventional propellant devices is seriously degraded due to significant heat losses which can cause the combustion extinction. A promising approach is to use shock or detonation waves in gazeous media to enhance chemical reaction rates. A detonation is a rapid regime of burning in which a strong shock ignites the fuel and the burning proceeds to equlibrium behind the shock, while the energy released continues to drive the shock. It is also characterized by the presence of longitudinal and transverse instabilities, thereby subjecting the shock front to violent deceleration / acceleration. The objective of this thesis is to better understand the mean structure of the reaction zone that extends from the shock to the sonic surface. As for numerical modelling, the compressible multi-species reactive Navier-Stokes equations are solved using an in-house code "CHOC-WAVES", including variable thermodynamic and transport coefficients depending on the species. The Generalized Chapman-Jouguet condition was developed and corroborated by the numerical results in the case of stable multidimensionnal detonation. More specially, it was shown that the transverse instabilities are attenuated with the scale reduction. To this end, a scenarion, based on the structure of downstream subsonic pocket, which is correlated to the development of the boundary layer, has been proposed to explain the deificit of the detonation from velocity. This scheme shares many similarities with the macro-detonation, while keeping some differences. In particular, it was shown that the strong vorticity, generated at the Prandlt-Meyersingularity and often neglected in macro-detonation models, diffuses in the subsonic pocket. The present contribution enables us to shade more physical insight for the propagation of stable and confined detonation fronts

It is presented in this work the growth model nonlinear Chapman-Richards with distribution of errors following the new class of symmetric models processed and Bayesian inference for the parameters. The objective was to apply this structure, via Metropolis-Hastings algorithm, in order to select the equation that best predicted heights of clones of Eucalyptus urophilla experiment established at the Agronomic Institute of Pernambuco (IPA) in the city of Araripina . The Gypsum Pole of Araripe is an industrial zone, located on the upper interior of Pernambuco, which consumes large amount of wood from native vegetation (caatinga) for calcination of gypsum. In this scenario, there is great need for a solution, economically and environmentally feasible that allows minimizing the pressure on native vegetation. The generus Eucalyptus presents itself as an alternative for rapid development and versatility. The height has proven to be an important factor in prognosis of productivity and selection of clones best adapted. One of the main growth curves, is the Chapman-Richards model with normal distribution for errors. However, some alternatives have been proposed in order to reduce the influence of atypical observations generated by this model. The data were taken from a plantation, with 72 months. Were performed inferences and diagnostics for processed and unprocessed model with many distributions symmetric. After selecting the best equation, was shown some convergence of graphics and other parameters that show the fit to the data model transformed symmetric Student’s t with 5 degrees of freedom in the parameters using Bayesian inference.

Historically, the wood of the eucalyptus is used for the most varied applications, such as; firewood, charcoal, cellulose, railway sleepers, posts for electrification, bark to tan leather, essential oils, civil construction, etc. The Gypsum Pole of Araripe in Pernambuco is a great firewood consumer for the gypsum production. Due to great need to find economical and environmental alternatives for the area, the sustainable production of eucalyptus that is a fast growth tree with great versatility has an important role. In the planning of the sustainable forest management there is a variable of extreme importance: the growth. To model the growth is fundamental in the prognosis of the productivity, site quality and dynamics of populations. Usually, the growth curves are fitted through nonlinear models developed empirically to relate, for instance, height and age. The Chapman-Richards model is a nonlinear model frequently used to model forest growth. In studies of this type, in general, it is assumed that the errors follow approximately the normal distribution. However, to model the growth assuming that the errors have a normal distribution is quite sensitive to atypical values that can happen, and generate bad estimates of the parameters. To correct that problem a new class of transformed symmetrical models was developed considering for the errors symmetrical continuous distributions with heavier tails than the normal distribution and allowing a possible nonlinear structure for the mean. With the expectation of obtaining better estimates of eucalyptus growth, it was applied to the Chapman-Richards model the following distributions of the errors: normal, t of Student, Cauchy, exponential potency, logistics I and logistics II. The t distribution of Student with 2 degrees of freedom was the most efficient to estimate height and circumference growth of eucalyptus in the Gypsum Pole of Pernambuco.

Abstract:
The task of this diploma thesis is the Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). LBM is a mesoscopic method describing the particle motion in a fluid by the Boltzmann equation, where the distribution function is involved. The Chapman-Enskog expansion shows the connection with the macroscopic Navier-Stokes equations of conservation laws. In this process the Hermite polynoms are used. The Lattice Boltzmann equation is derived by the discretisation of velocity, space and time which is concluding to the numerical algorithm. This algorithm is applied at two problems of fluid flow: the two-dimensional square cavity and a flow arround obstacles. In both cases were the results of velocities compared to results calculated by finite volume method (FVM). The relative errors are in order of multiple 1 %.

Abstract:
This thesis presents detailed description of the development of two computer codes written in FORTRAN language for the analysis of detonation of energetic mixtures. The first code, named GasPX, can compute the detonation parameters of premixed gaseous mixtures and the second one, named BARUT-X, can compute the detonation parameters of C-H-N-O based solid explosives. Both computer codes perform the computations on the basis of Chapman-Jouguet Steady State Detonation Theory and in chemical equilibrium condition. The computed detonation point by the computer codes is one of the possible solutions of the Rankine&ndash
Hugoniot curve and it also satisfies the Rayleigh line. By examining the compressibility of the gaseous products formed after detonation of premixed gaseous mixtures, it is inferred that the ideal-gas equation of state can be used to describe the detonation products. GasPX then calculates the detonation parameters complying with ideal-gas equation of state. However, the assumption of the ideal gas behavior is not valid for gaseous detonation products of solid explosives. Considering the historical improvement of the numerical studies in the literature, the BKW (Becker-Kistiakowsky-Wilson) Equation of State for gaseous products and the Cowan &
Fickett Equation of State for solid carbon (graphite) in the products are applied to the numerical model of BARUT-X. Several calculations of detonation parameters are performed by both GasPX and BARUT-X. The results are compared with those computed by the other computer codes as well as the experimental data in the literature. Comparisons show that the results are in satisfactory agreement with experiments and also in good agreement with the calculations performed by the other codes.
