Women in Changsha are patronizing coffee-houses, ordering beverages and sweets, and disliking the taste of the expensive product purchased. This thesis is an exploratory research study conducted in Changsha, China with a consumer behavior focus. It uses primary surveys and interviews in addition to secondary sources from books, articles, and academic journals. It seeks to identify underlying motives for purchasing behavior from working women in the developing third-tier city Changsha, Hunan, China. It delves into the psychology of the working women who spend their hard-earned discretionary incomes at costly western chain coffee-houses. The inland mass-market consumer class feels the desire to project their newly established status while needing to save money for their personal future, their children’s schooling, and their parent’s retirement. They must wisely spend discretionary income while satisfying social societal norms. An individual’s self-concept plays and important role in determining which coffee shop she will frequent and what she will order. Daylight Donuts, Starbucks, Costa Coffee and local café’s all serve brewed coffee but they have different associations. This study aims at understanding the influencing factors associated with coffee-house brand equity and how the consumer’s perception of the brand forms her purchasing behavior. All coffee-house brands are relatively new in Changsha, none existing more than seven years. They do not have lasting ties with the community and need to create consumer relationships to ensure sustainability. Changsha women are bold and strong willed. If a corporation is to succeed in the future of Hunan, it will need to create an environment of hospitality excellence, place socially responsible roots in the society, and ask its customers what they want.

Chen, Wei. "Travel agency marketing : a study of Changsha, China." Thesis, University of Derby, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10545/323788.

Abstract:
This thesis constitutes an explication of tourism marketing in P.R. China. It identified the predominant factors at influence the marketing operations of Chinese travel agencies and explored the marketing mix approaches adopted by them. By studying Changsha, the research revealed that tourism marketing in China is a complex phenomenon. The great geographical and cultural distances mean the marketing theories, which are widely utilized in western countries, could have different effects on the oriental developing country. An even more important distinction is that China is a socialist country but the reforms have begun to introduce the capitalistic market economy from the end of 1970' s. Central government protected the travel agency market and significantly influenced the business for 20 years. The marketing concept is a new idea for Chinese entrepreneurs in tourism industry, therefore they are learning to utilize the tool to achieve their goals. With China's entry into the WTO (World Trade Organisation) at Nov. 2001, it meant that every travel agency in China would face the new challenges and opportunities in a free market environment. Based on a combination of research methods with semi-structured interviews, observations and the review of secondary data, the research provides a picture of the current market situation of the Changsha travel agency industry. It reveals that the role of Chinese travel agencies is larger than that of those in western countries. Travel agencies in Changsha work as the organiser, retailer, educator and advocator in the industry. They have begun to use the integrated marketing mix tools to maintain their marketing share and keep on improving their management and technical skills.

Abstract:
With rapid urban development in China, many cities are still concerned about the quantity of the economy growth while ignoring the quality of the growth; ecological systems face a challenging situation. How to evaluate and guide a sustainable devel-opment is a vitally important question to the government of China. The study was partly performed in cooperation with the Institute of Building Research (IBR), who was entrusted by Changsha government of the Hunan Province. To evaluate the sus-tainability of urban development, a comprehensive indicator system was developed and applied, which was consistent to the policy of the so called "Two oriented socie-ty", which means Resource conservation and Environment friendly society. This pa-per shows a logic methodology to develop an indicator system – through the re-search, from literature review to modern concept; it shows clearly the factors that are important to build a sustainable city. The indicator system was derived and compared with other existing systems. The comparison showed that the indicator system we developed for the city is operational and integrated with a consistent hierarchy. Thereafter, the established indicator sys-tem was evaluated using an Analytical Hierarchy Process methodology. Indictors of ecological aspects were evaluated using the data collected, including the Changsha green field map, wetland map and ecological control maps. The indicator system was applied and the result was used as decision support in urban planning for 2020. How-ever, a main limitation lied in data collection: since the data we collected was not completely the data we expected. Besides, the indicator system was developed on the base of the policy called the "Two oriented society",which has its preference and limi-tation itself. Still, in sum, the indicator system we built through the research provided a satisfactory framework to the government to guide the development of the society in a macro scale. It needs future involvement to improve the data collection and standardization.

Abstract:
China has among the world’s fastest growing urban region and faced enormous environmental and social challenges that requires a forward thinking of urban planning, which integrates environmental sustainability and social equity into urban resilience. In China, national and provincial urban policies have long focused on economic and industrial developments, whereas social welfare was not account for urban planning until very recently. After decades of rapid socioeconomic development, China has now entered an urbanization stage at which social development becomes as urgent as economic and environmental transformation. Rural migrant as a lower social group is a product of China’s rigorous rural-urban household registration (Hukou) that has caused plenty of social tragedies. Although governmental authorities have vowed to elevate rural migrants’ social status, as a heterogeneous social group, rural migrants received very little research attention by far. To examine rural migrants’ demographic information and their social status, this research employs happiness as a theme to carry out a questionnaire survey. In total, 1,267 responses were collected at bus and train stations in Changsha, a second-tier city located in the middle of China. According to the survey, rural migrants’ happiness status is in close relation with some demographic characteristics such as gender, ethnicity and education. In general, men are unhappier than women; the ethnic minorities are unhappier than the ethnic majority-Han; and the highly educated are unhappier than those with lower educational attainment. By performing a stepwise regression, statistics uncover that rural migrants’ happiness status in Changsha is positively associated with a stable income, a job with insurance and a well sustained family tie. Based on the study results, I propose three suggestions for social urban planning in China’s second-tier cities: (1) to set up a commercial district that embraces diverse ethnic groups, where the minor ethnic rural migrants can work and live with their own cultures. (2) To gather rural migrants by industry and establish labour unions that can represent for rural migrants’ interests. (3) To maintain the discriminated Hukou system, but define Hukou identity based on rural migrants’ taxation conditions.     Keywords: rural migrants, demographic characteristics, happiness factors, social urban planning

Abstract:
This study investigates variable noun phrase number agreement (VNA) in two second language varieties of Portuguese, spoken in Maputo, Mozambique and in Mindelo, Cape Verde. Quantitative VARBRUL analysis is carried out based on recordings made in Maputo and Mindelo 2007 and 2008. Previous quantitative studies on VNA in varieties of Brazilian Portuguese (Guy, 1981; Lopes, 2001; Andrade, 2003) as well as on VNA in first and second language varieties of Portuguese from São Tomé (Baxter, 2004; Figueiredo, 2008, 2010) indicate contact between Portuguese and African languages as the main origin of this phenomenon. VNA in Brazilian Portuguese is, however, interpreted by Scherre (1988) and Naro & Scherre (1993, 2007) as the result of language internal drift. Varieties of Portuguese from Mozambique and Cape Verde are particularly interesting to contrast in order to investigate influences from African languages on VNA, as in Mozambique Bantu languages are first languages of the vast majority of Portuguese speakers, whereas in Cape Verde, practically all Portuguese speakers are first language speakers of Cape Verdean Creole, whose substrates are West African, and not Bantu, languages. Comparison is also made with previous studies from Brazil and São Tomé. The results of this study comment previously postulated explanations for VNA in Portuguese in various ways. The analysis of the variables onset age and age stratum indicates that VNA in the analyzed varieties is a phenomenon linked to the acquisition of Portuguese as a second language and/or language contact rather than the result of internal drift. The fact that all the compared varieties tend to mark plural on pre-head components contradicts Bantu transfer as an explanation for this pattern, and raises the need to also consider more general explanations based on language contact. The basic structural similarity between the compared varieties suggests the existence of a grammatical restructuring continuum.

Abstract:
Microgrid can provide stable, clean, and sustainable electricity supply for remote places since it can operate on renewable energy sources and work isolated from the utility grid. This thesis evaluates the life cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the microgrid system which is located at the ‘North-five Islands’ of Changshan archipelago in China. The existing electricity generation technologies of the microgrid system are wind turbine, PV system and diesel generators with the capacity of 2 MW, 300 kW and 2046 kW, respectively. The total demand of electricity (362.2 GWh) will be supplied by the wind turbine, PV system and diesel generators with 32.03%, 2.36% and 65.62%, respectively, if the microgrid system is required to supply the electricity demand for the ‘North-five Islands’ area alone under the islanded mode during 20 years lifespan. The thesis uses the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to evaluate the life cycle GHG emissions of the microgrid system. The life cycle stages of this study include: raw material extraction, manufacturing, transportation and operation. In order to assess the environmental benefits of the microgrid system, three electricity supply options – ‘microgrid electricity supply option’, ‘grid extension electricity supply option’, and ‘conventional fossil diesel generators electricity supply option’ are designed to evaluate the life cycle GHG emissions for supplying 20 years electricity demand (362.2 GWh) of the ‘Northfive Islands’. The results show that the life cycle GHG emissions of the ‘microgrid electricity supply option’ are 223.19 million kgCO2eq. Compared to the ‘grid extension electricity supply option’ and ‘conventional fossil diesel generators electricity supply option’, the net savings of the GHG emissions are 70.56 and 112.18 million kgCO2eq, respectively. It mainly results from the differences of the electricity supply methods of the three electricity supply options. For the ‘microgrid electricity supply option’ itself, the operation stage takes the most responsibility of the life cycle GHG emissions with 97.6%. The raw material extraction, manufacturing and transportation stages account for 1.93%, 0.44% and 0.026%, respectively. For the system components of the microgrid system, the wind turbine, PV system, diesel generators, energy storage system, and cables account for 0.34%, 0.18%, 97.75%, 0.60%, and 1.12%, respectively, of the microgrid system’s life cycle GHG emissions. The thesis conducts the sensitivity analysis of diesel burn rate efficiency (L/kWh) of the microgrid system’s diesel generators due to a large quantity (60.84 million L) of diesel consumption by the diesel generators during 20 years operation time. According to the results of the sensitivity analysis, the diesel burn rate efficiency can directly impact the diesel consumption of the diesel generators, and consequently has a significant impact on the life cycle GHG emissions of the ‘North-five Islands’ microgrid system. Since the diesel burn rate efficiency represents the amount of diesel consumption, this results highlight the significance of any factors that affect the diesel consumption (e.g. quantity of diesel, temperature, altitude, etc.), in affecting the life cycle GHG emissions of the ‘North-five Islands’ microgrid system. In addition, the thesis performers the sensitivity analysis of renewable energy (wind and solar energy in specific) fraction of the studied microgrid system because of the huge potential of available renewable energy (63.65 MW of wind turbines) nearby the microgrid system. The results of the sensitivity analysis show that the life cycle GHG emissions of the microgrid system decrease linearly with the increase of wind and solar energy fraction. Particularly, the life cycle GHG emissions of the microgrid system decrease 1.46% (3.26 million kgCO2eq) and 1.37% (3.05 million kgCO2eq) with an increase of 1% in wind and solar energy, respectively.

Since the policy of Reform and Opening in 1980s, Chinese Government processed in rapid urbanization with many unplanned living streets eradicated for economic growth. Duoluo Street in Changsha is one of them. This demolition-led development erased local space culture and daily memories, causing irreversible damage to the urban landscape. Based on the case of Duoluo Street, this thesis discusses the living culture and value of unplanned living streets for urban space. Through official, media and network data, along with deep interviews, field survey, questionnaire, and my own experience, four conclusions are drawn as follows. Firstly, this self-raised Duoluo Street provided a potential solution to the transforming Chinese society within the modernism planning system. Secondly, this vivid and free street was filled up with diverse business activities, ranging from eating to shoping. Thus, diffierent needs of consumers and self-recovery of this street could be fulfilled according to the social development. Meanwhile, the involved local identification and rebellious youth subculture made Duoluo Street a Carnival shield from traditional bounds. Thirdly, this disorder and somehow dirty street was demolished by government for city image and Yuelu Mountain District planning program. During the dismantling process, the bottom up resistance thrived against the government power. And the huge change afterwards reflected the disparity between government massive planning projectand daily civilian life. Finally, the rebuilding environment after the demolition reflects that the Government of Changsha uses improving the environment of waterfront as a method of urban development and economic growth, under the market-oriented background and the special mode of governance in China.

In modern China, Japan’s massive aggression encountered great resistance. Since the Marco Polo Bridge Incident on July 7, Chiang Kai-shek had been ready for a full-scale and protracted war against Japan. But with constant defeat by Japanese army, Chiang’s army was forced to retreat, and the battle lines were moving inland. To keep wealth from the Japanese, Kuomintang officials made the Scorched Earth Policy, ordering the destruction of equipments, roads and buildings during the retreat. Unsatisfied with the result of destruction in Wuhan, Chiang Kai-shek decided to burn the whole city of Changsha, the provincial capital of Hunan, if it could not stop the advancing Japanese army. Besides, local government was demanded to prepare for the burning plan, making sure that everything would go well. On November 11th, 1938, the city of Yueyang fell to the Empire of Japan, and the situation in Changsha became increasingly tense. On November 12th, the chairman of Hunan Province, Zhang Zhizhong, passed Chiang’s idea to his subordinates in a meeting. Xu Quan, director of the Staff Office of the Garrison Headquarters, was order to take command of the plan made by Feng Ti, commander of the Garrison Headquarters, and Xu Quan, director of the Security Office. However, at the dawn of November 13th, when local officials were arranging for the plan, Shetan Street outside the South Gate began to burn, and the fire soon spread to the whole city. Fleeing in panic, thousands of people lost their lives. The burning lasted for five days, which made Changsha one of the most damaged cities during China's Resistance War against Japan. Later in the military tribunal set up by Chiang, those officials supposed to be responsible for the burning were executed. What’s more, troops were sent to Changsha to assist with the aftermath, soothing the masses as well as rebuilding the morale of the country.

For a long time, whether the Government or academic researchers, most will focus on the foreign spouses ''marriage and life adjustment, family interaction, parenting education "and other basic living for the study; Recently, with the spouses'' families duty of care "in the gradual elimination of their" family economic burden "of increasing the focus shifted to ''spouses labor utilization status" was explored, also found that the process of re-employment of foreign spouses, often due to language, culture, education, etc. each of the "stereotype" of factors, with the potential to produce significant to "employment discrimination and barriers to employment," and the formation of "high employment motivation, low labor use" a particular phenomenon (Wang Canhuai, Lin Ai Rong, 2009). However, these "labor use" related research is mostly from the spouses'' employment (or job) "role departure, rarely from" entrepreneur "role discussed. Therefore, this study will examine the spindle switch to from "entrepreneurs" point of view, in order to understand the impact of foreign spouses in the course of business of the relevant factors and coping strategies, and thus the deliberate spouses as a service basis. In this study, the actual case - Central Region spouses "micro-entrepreneurs" who, as research subjects to explore and death "spouses" of related issues, try to export the purpose of this study.

Chinese cultural industry has been developing at fast pace since 2006 when General Office of the Communist Party of China and General Office of the State Council started the first long-term plan for cultural industry called the National “11th Five Year Plan” Period Cultural Development Plan to the National “12th Five Year Plan” Period Cultural Development Doubling Plan in 2012. In a field of movies, TV shows, new media, and publications, all have the trend of good growth. Moreover, the government intends to raise the percentage of culture in GDP from 3% to 5%. This means when reaching the year 2020, the cultural industry will gain over $5.5 trillion while the growing rate for the next 7 years at around 20%. Culture has definitely influence the potential growth of economic in China no matter what the situation might be and whether the goal will be reached or not. At the same time when industrialized culture art is being developed, folk arts are just beginning and starting to sprout. The potential clients for cultural services have migrate from “politics” to “market” after experiencing the baptism of The Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution and the wave of Chinese Economic Reform. The Chinese art culture has made culture’s varieties, diversities, and vivacities come back to life despite the fact that it is still being limited. At the same time, a lot of non-government organizations, either official or non-official, spring up like mushrooms and spread all over China. However, the rapid increase leaves policies and systems behind, leading to a situation of wrestling between “confusion” and “self-seeking” for organization of arts and cultures and their managers. How to deal with this immature, imprecise, and yet unstable environment will be a major issue they need to face. This paper merged Changsha region with the research topic and field to compose the below four purposes. First, perceive the primary working conditions and living environments of Changsha’s Folk Art Administration workers after 1980s. Second, seek into the operating capacities of Changsha’s organization of arts and cultures and also their skills of solving problems. Then this research will pay attention to the relationship and interactions between stakeholders such as Changsha’s organization of arts and cultures and its government. Finally, proposal of relative advises and possible methods for improvements will be given. Despite purposes are complex in whole, which will be hard to attend all aspects of matters and to have a profound insights, the researcher will analyze the research results to gather useful information for categorization and summarization. Furthermore, this research aims on urging industries to pay more attention to the development of organization of arts and cultures, as well as provides useful references for works in the future.

A Study of Changhua Irrigation Association Abstract As the Chinese saying goes, “To people food is all that matters,” people’s life is completely dependent on agriculture. Being the rice belt of Taiwan, Changhua plain is of great importance in terms of areas of cultivated land and rice production, meaning that the water consumed there is mainly for irrigation. Due to urban transformation and establishment of factories in recent years, water supply has been strongly needed in areas such as agriculture, industry and livelihood needs. Hence the Irrigation Association (IA) plays a very important role in water resources development and management. This paper studies Changhua IA mainly in five areas. First, we will look at the history of irrigation development. Beginning from the Ming and Quin dynasties, the association went through the colonial age to after the year of 1956, the time when Changhua, Babao, Beidou, and Nantou water resources commissions were integrated to create Changhua IA. The association is subdivided into executive division, council division and IA panels. Then we will examine the development of each division and the roles they play in dealing with local public affairs. The second area concerns the water resources development and management, and how the association draw water from rainfall, river and underground water—the sources of irrigation in Changhua, to supply sufficient water during the two harvest seasons of a year and how they collect extra water from furrows for other purposes. Third, irrigation management. This part will be explained through the concepts of cadestre management, water rights, sabotages and disputes concerning water use, each of these areas covered by specific staff of IA. Actual cases are also added to illustrate that IA also disseminates information and establishes ditch management system to curb illegal water use, in addition to law enforcement. Fourth, piping and utilities. In order to provide sufficient water in large cultivated areas, the Changhua IA would constantly change old pipes for more efficient irrigation. Fifth, the Changhua IA’s major influence on Changhua and Nantou counties. It can be explained in three ways: it supports crop production, provides water for industries, and protects the environment and people. Besides, Changhua IA boosts crop production and helps grow economic crops that can better the living standard of farmers. It also helps construct Jiji weir for water allocation and redirects unused water from farmland for industrial use. Recently, it also adds more greenery to the ditches and applies ecological engineering in accordance with state policy, while providing diversified services to farmers and neighborhoods alike. In short, after more than 50 years of history, Changhua IA has been phase by phase revolutionizing to improve its system and effectiveness, so as to keep up with the trend. With this paper, the author hopes that, other than the contributions of IA, the government will adjust policy to deal with the problem of food shortage, improve the production of produce, pay more attention to the presence and function of IA to local agriculture and help IA maintain a sustainable future.

Because of the structural change in the global economy, industrial development from the previous labor-intensive state is getting into both production technology and R &; D-based patterns. In this trend, the development of sporadic traditional industrial areas has been unable to fully meet the needs of the business community to cope with this trend. Therefore, Changhua Coastal Industrial Park operates and it helps to promote industrial technology to upgrade, and further let industries to use local resources effectively. This research is to explore the internal and external effectiveness of industries in Changhua Coastal Industrial Park and understand the effect on the economy of overall Changhua County influenced by Changhua Coastal Industrial Park. This research is accomplished by using input-output analysis which computes output value and industrial side show situation. This research is based on 2006 years of industry related statistics published by the DGBAS, which used of location quotient method to convert the national industry association tables to conclude the effect of economics in Changhua which is influenced by the operation of Changhua Coastal industrial Park. Throught this dissertation, it is suggested that firms should not only develop technologies of key industries, but also focus on other high-value sectors, such as chemical materials, iron and steel, metal products and wholesale retail sector in order to increase the development of peripheral industries, and thus enhance the overall cost-effectiveness of Changhua County in the future.

Floods are the most devastating natural disasters that cause numerous damages and casualties. Due to the fierce climate change worldwide, the threat of floods puts life in risk, especially for Taiwan, which is unique in its climate, geology and terrain, becomes the concern of high risk. Changhua County, one of the areas frequently devastated by floods, was selected as the setting of this research. In 2001, National Science and Technology Center for Disaster Reduction has completed all the city potential inundation maps in Taiwan. However, only a few were applied in relevant research with limited contribution. As a result, this research aimed to overlay the potential inundation maps and the land use maps of Changhua County to investigate the inundation in farmlands, industrial estates, commercial and residential areas. Besides, grades are given to each of the three areas in each town and village according to the scale of inundation. The grades are summed up to judge the vulnerability of each town and village. The results show that the farmlands in Erhlin are the most devastated, while industrial estates, commercial and residential areas are damaged the most in Changhua City and Yuanlin. In terms of vulnerability evaluations, Changhua City, Fangyang and Dacun are the most vulnerable areas under smaller floods. Changhua City, Fangyang, Fusing and Puyan are most vulnerable under extreme flooding events. In addition, data of agriculture loss and inundation grant application were collected for verification of the overlapping analysis. Furthermore, demographic data of every town and village were collected for the discussion of vulnerability. The results indicated a consistency between most of the potential inundation of farmlands and the real damages except Jhutang and Fangyang. The number of victims in the residential area also corresponded to that of the inundation grant application. Hence, the research proved the value of the potential inundation maps. Moreover, the results suggested that the southwestern towns and villages in Changhua County are significantly vulnerable in terms of demographics, which deserves special attention from the authority. Abstract Taiwan has undergone political transformation for half a century. During the fifty years, not only be the government devoted to promoting democratization, but the function of legislation also played an influential role in the process. As far as counties are concerned, since the change of provincial government in constitutional amendments and the enactment of local institution law, the local self-government system goes into a new age. County or city assemblies become the highest public organization in local self-governments. Due to assemblymen’ powers over legislation and budget, the role of assemblies on monitoring administration seems increasingly important. Consequently, the quality of assemblymen (in other words, local representatives) directly affects the result of the operation of local self-governments. Assemblies are the symbol of democratic and constitutional politics. The function of assemblies is intended to express the will and interest of each class. As time went by, the public has shifted its focus from the improvement of democracy to the performance of assemblymen. Through assemblymen’ proposals, petitions and interrogation, the will of the public was presented. Among these methods, proposals are the most critical and representative one. The paper is intended to explore the origin of the public will, the performance of assembly members and the quality of local legislation. Also, it discusses the attitude and influence of the public toward the enforcement of resolutions of proposals. Based on the political system theory and through content analyses and informal discussions, the paper uses proposals of the 13th and 14th terms assemblymen to make an analysis and a comparison. Meanwhile, through informal discussions it realizes public ideas and expectations. Finally, the paper is hoped to find out the relation between proposals and the public will, and the result will be used as references for the improvement of the quality of assembly operation. How schools are selected in Changhua County Abstract The purpose of this research is mainly to discuss the correlations among parents’ selections of school, marketing strategies for school image promotion and school image at an elementary in Changhua County. After reviewing related literature, the construction of this study, questionnaires, and interviews were conducted. Samples were randomly drawn from those parents who send their children to different school district instead of their original school district. There were 269 copies of questionnaires given out. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, Scheffé method, and Pearson product-moment correlation. The results of this research are as follows: 1. Parents of students who send their children to different school district to study showed high level of recognition toward marketing strategies for school image promotion. 2. Parents of students who send their children to different school district to study showed high level of recognition toward school image. 3. The differences about parents from different backgrounds toward marketing strategies for school image promotion were: (1) No significant differences were found between parents’ age differences and the level of recognition toward marketing strategies for school image promotion. (2) There were significant differences between parents with different educational backgrounds and the level of recognition toward marketing strategies for school image promotion. (3) There were significant differences between parents with different occupations and the level of recognition toward marketing strategies for school image promotion. 4. The differences in eight ways of level of recognition about parents from different backgrounds toward school image were: (1) No significant differences were found between parents’ age differences and the level of recognition toward school image. (2) There were significant differences between parents with different educational backgrounds and the level of recognition toward school image. Besides, parents with higher educational background had less high level of recognition. (3) In terms of curriculum and instruction, public relation image, significant differences were found among parents with different occupations. However, significant differences were not found with Scheffé method. 5. The marketing strategies for school image promotion and school image were highly correlated. Accordingly, parents had high level of recognition toward school’s marketing strategies for school image promotion. That is to say, parents of this elementary school in Changhua County valued marketing strategies for school image promotion. They especially valued “teacher image.” Therefore, if school can make good use of marketing strategies for school image promotion, it will help boost school image. The proverb “First-Fucheng, Second-Lukang, Third-Monka” speaks for Changhua for its crucial position in the history of Taiwan’s development. In traditional societies, dwelling houses not only represent the characteristics of society and culture, but also in a practical sense show dwellers’ everyday customs and concepts. From different regions and communities, dwellers develop different space types in architecture. And with the differences in geographical location, climate, economic level and living arrangement, dwelling houses embody the development of the immigrant society in a region. This research discusses how the traditional dwelling houses in Changhua County, in terms of building types, lead an evolution of regional features since they have changed as they are developed over time. The relationship among these features, the archetype courtyard house and its variations becomes how Changhua County develops its traditional courtyard houses with regional style and characteristics.

Dry, wet and bulk deposition in Changhua City were collected in 2001 to examine its chemical composition and evaluate its relationship with meteorological factors. Factor analysis was used to evaluate relationships of ions in precipitation to provide a quantitative determination of sources of rainwater contamination. Annual volume-weighted mean pH was 4.91 with approximately half of the precipitation events had pH < 5.0, the commonly used level for acid rain classification. Although the mean concentrations of SO42- and NO3- in precipitation were only 1/4 of that reported for Taipei, mean concentrations of Na+、K+、Mg2+ and Ca2+ were also much lower in Changhua as such mean pH was very close to that reported for Taipei(4.89). Storms types differ in their pH with mold rain(Meiyu), spring rain, thundershower, cold front and typhoon rain in 2001 in Changhua had mean pH of 4.58, 4.74, 4.83, 4.76 and 5.05, respectively. Light wind (< 2.5 m/sec) had high mean ions concentration but was highly variable, and ions concentration tended to decreased with increasing rainfall volume as a result of dilution effect. Ion concentrations also decreased with increases in rainfall intensities but the effect differed among ions. Base cations decreased more rapidly than anions with increasing rainfall intensities. Consequently, pH tended to drop with increases in rainfall intensities. Factor analysis on precipitation chemical composition extracted three main factors with eigenvalue > 1. The first factor has high loadings on Na+、K+、Mg2+ and Ca2+ could be attributed to sea salt aerosol influence. The second factor had high loadings on NH4+、SO42-、NO3- and clearly indicates anthropogenic pollution source. The third factor has a high loading only on H+ indicating that the pH of precipitation in Changhua City was not dominated only by acidic but base ions. The influences of soil and dust can only be recognized after sea salt correction.

Under the influence of globalization, the nation of community empowerment is introduced to Taiwan: the government, the people and the institutions of the communities establish a new governance interactive internet by a new cooperation of the public and the private departments and by authorizing the people of the communities. By proposing the mechanism of community governance, the interaction of the public and the private departments under the process of promoting the community empowerment in communities of Changhua is discussed. And by developing the indication of community good governance, the difficulties of managements under the process of promoting Changhua community empowerment are discovered, so as to draw up the countermeasures. The interaction with the public departments under the process of promoting Changhua community empowerment in different areas and developing level communities is different. The subsidies of related community empowerment from the public departments is also different due to the different resources inside and outside the communities. Plus the public and the private departments have not set up a mature communication internet yet, so under the process of promoting Changhua community empowerment, the problems of eternal managements are often encountered. Hence, the managements of the organizations of the public and the private departments, implementing, participating, and resources need to be reinforced under the process of promoting Changhua community empowerment in the near future.

There are some agricultural problems such as low food self-sufficiency rate and farmland pollution occur in Taiwan in recent year. The agriculture production environment is getting more and more attention with the growing conservation concept. Agriculture and industry coexist in Hemei. The township is famous for the textile industry during the economic take off age and it also gets a lot of attention on the metal industry in these years. The landscape was shaped by the industrial structures, so the industrial transformation can be described by the change of landscape structure in Hemei. The land-cover pattern of 1993, 2004 and 2014 were described by remote sensing images classification and the landscape indices. The supervised classification and manual edition were used to increase the precision of classification. Meanwhile, the landscape changes among the three periods were analyzed. The results show that the change between 1993 and 2004 is significant, especially the building composition increases from 35.5% to 47.3% and the bare land decreases from 16.9% to 8.8%. The landscape becomes fragmentation and irregular may due to the population growth and the building expansion. The fragmented landscape may affect the land use in the future.

The Land God (Tudi Gong; Bag-Gong) played an important role in the lives of the Hakka ancestors, helping them to overcome the problem of geography, weather, and planting. The main purposes of this study were to explore on the historical changes of the Land God and transitions of the architectural style of Bag-Gong temples, the worshiping events and the spiritual meanings for villagers. In this study, a field survey and in-depth interviews were conducted in a qualitative manner including visiting eight Bag- Gong temples in Huozhuang Village and inviting local senior residents to conduct interviews. Results were determined through analytic induction to reveal the historical and local characteristics of Hakka Ba-Gong belief. The major findings were as following: 1. The title of Bag-Gong in Hakka language represents the elders of the family. Thus, Bag-Gong belief is closed to Hakka people’s everyday lives. The spirit of Bag-Gong’s compatibility passes on for generations. 2. The architectural styles of Bag-Gong temples have been changed through the different generations, yet, they are still kept simple and small, in order to get closed to the common people and local villagers. 3. The items offered to Bag-Gong are different from time to time and are different from villagers, but reverent manners of villagers are more important than the offered items. 4. For the villagers. Bag-Gong is a source of spiritual dependence. Visiting the neighborhood Bag-Gong temples can bring positive thinking to them.

The national energy policy aims at replacing nuclear energy with green energy. However, green energy is not a base-load energy, it still needs to rely on fossil energy to stabilize the power supply. Therefore, fossil-fuel power generation will continue to play an important role in the future. The technology which captures carbon dioxide in real time and seals it on site can simultaneously solve the problem of pollution, and also maintain the national energy structure. This study collects the seismic and geological data of the Jangbin Industrial Area and the Taichung Power Plant along the Taichung-Changhua coast. We will compare the advantages and disadvantages of the two sites as CCS sites This study used high-resolution reflection seismic survey to investigate underground structures suitable for carbon dioxide sequestration as a reference for drilling and future monitoring. In the field, the vibrator source is used with 240 channels, 4m spacing, and 30 folds. A total of 11 reflection seismic lines along the coastline are collected, with a total length of 30 kilometers. The well data from CPC’s WangGon Well and Taipower’s JangBin Well are used to predict the future Taichung-Port Well, which further helps the interpretation of the seismic data gathered at the Taichung Port area. The following conclusions are obtained: 1) Using the stratigraphic formations revealed by WangGong Well and JangBin Well, the possible stratigraphic patterns of the future Tachung-Port Well are estimated, which are confirmed by the seismic reflection profiles of this study. 2) Six cross-tied surveying lines in the Jangbin Area establish a complete 3D underground stratigraphic distribution. The strata have a strike of north 8 degrees to east and a dip 3.8 degrees east. Three CO2 storage layers are at the depths of 2140~2450m, 2510~3140m, and 3300~3500m. 3) Five survey lines in the Taichung-Port Area expose similar seismic reflection phases. After comparing with the Taichung-Port Well, its CO2 storage layers are at the depths of 2300~2700m, 2850~3350m, and 3500~3900m. 4) The stratum of the TaiChung-Port Area is 250~400 meters deeper than that of the Jangbin Area. However, the available layer thickness is about 50 meters larger, and the reflective phase indicates better sandstone content. 5) The survey area has simple structure and the stratum is flat. No faults and layer disturbances are found. The conditions of the sedimentary structure make the area suitable as a CCS site.

Founded in 1965, the Formosa Chemicals & Fiber Corporation (hereafter as “Formosa Chemicals”) had brought economic growth and job opportunities to Changhua in the past. However, it has become an obnoxious facility in the eyes of the local as society becoming more aware and concerned about the environmental issues it may arise. News of the protests on pollution the company generated has taken over the headlines from time to time. In September 2016, Formosa Chemicals was trapped in a deadlock of whether to shut down or relocate its factory as the extension of its permit to operate its coal-fired boilers hung in suspense; the industrial transformation and use of the industrial land of Formosa Chemicals in the future have already become a major issue in Changhua’s urban development. This study sets out from the geographic perspective of “land and the environment,”, relating to environmental perception aroused by Formosa Chemicals’ pollution and behavioral adaptation of the local residents through comprehensive interviews of 23 residents in Changhua City. The study discovers that the pollution perception of the residents in relation to Formosa Chemicals centered on the more noticeable smell in air pollution, but less on water and noise pollution. The residents reflected unanimously and described the air pollution few decades ago as “smelly”. Distinctive improvement has seen only after the closure of the company’s pulp mill in 1994 and pollution is remotely detectable since then. In terms of adaptation, residents mainly wear face-masks, close windows and avoid activities in vicinity of Formosa Chemicals. This study also finds that the residents’ awareness level of the pollution information relating to Formosa Chemicals would influence their environmental perception; their relationship with Formosa Chemicals as well as the community services of Formosa Chemicals for the nearby seven villages would further affect the feelings of individual about the environment. The residents recognized the company’s contribution to creating jobs and bringing forth prosperity. However, with the company’s shrinkage in operation scale, its positive contribution decreases and the need to conduct industrial transformation and land consolidation are suggested to bring forth new opportunity for its urban development. Therefore, residents considered the relocation of Formosa Chemicals is beneficial to future development of Changhua City.

Agriculture has played a significant role in Taiwan’s development. It was the fundamental policy of “nurturing industrial development based on agriculture; developing agriculture by industrial development” that made possible the “economic miracle”. Taiwan’s agriculture, experiencing the challenges of industry structure changes, impacts from WTO’s protocols, and globalization of markets, now needs to be restructured to tackle the free-trade competition in order to sustain. Drawing on leisure agriculture theories, this study aims to explore the renovations of Taiwan’s leisure agriculture. The study analyzed the literature to provide the backgrounds of and the relevant approaches to the development of leisure farms in Taiwan. It then employed due diligence and in-depth interviews to understand the management pattern, features and strategy of leisure farms in Pusin Township of Changhua County. The findings are as followed: 1.Most leisure farms in the township are small-sized. Owners of the farms are at the same time the frontline employees. They are not enthusiastic to promote experiencing activities because they are more focused on the more prospering direct sale business. 2.Most farms have built acknowledged brands by providing toxic-free products. 3.Leisure farm is the only type of leisure agriculture. This single-type pattern is detrimental to the development of leisure agriculture. 4.Aging has become a serious problem in the development of labor intensive agriculture. This problem needs to be addressed or would cause agriculture industry to die. 5.Leisure farm is a seasonal business that attracts visitors only in certain seasons. The business needs to develop activities that are not seasonally-constrained to attract more visitors. 6.Public sectors are not progressive in promoting leisure agriculture. They haven’t fully cooperated with the business owners, nor have they integrated local resources to help the owners. 7.With convenient transportation and abundant resources of history and culture, the township is potential in providing its leisure agriculture with specific directions and opportunities for industry restructuring.

Is organizational culture the context factor of organizational learning (OL), the results of OL, or both? This study selected a department store to explore this topic, because of personal experience factors of the department store leader; he promoted OL with spiritualization for more then six years. The researchers were able to obtain interviews, observations, documents, and questionnaire survey information. Because certain factors: the company in the case study underwent relevant organization learning topics, an adequate amount of research time, the richness of information collected, the special nature of the motives for promoting OL, and the uniqueness of the means of intervention, allowed it to be a suitable research subject for the study. This paper was based mainly on qualitative research, and supplemented by quantitative research. For qualitative information, 56 subjects were interviewed, 226 observation records and internal and external documents were obtained. The information was analyzed with the grounded theory concept, using NVivo 7.0 software and the alternate use of open coding and axial coding to form a theoretical framework. To increase the credibility of the qualitative research, before each phase of research, the case study plan was written, and the results were given to the main informant to examine, in order to establish credibility and validity. At the same time this paper used the triangulation of the methodology: the researchers, theory, and information; among them the methodological triangulation used the survey method. The verification of the qualitative information research found that there were a total of four questionnaires; they were distributed eight times in three years, including a number of 916 valid questionnaires from customers, and 4,024 valid questionnaires from the staff. After qualitative and quantitative analysis of the data, this paper proposes that the OL results in cultural change. In addition, it proposes several other conclusions: first, spiritualization is an effective way to reach OL; second, the process of OL is acquiring, internalizing, distribution, interpreting, unlearning, and integrating; third, OL can contribute to cultural change; fourth, culture change contributes to human resources management; fifth, cultural change will change the mental model and positive emotions of individuals, which include the mental models of unlearning, reflection, multi-oriented thinking, and positive thinking; sixth, the changes of the individual mental model and affect will facilitate individual learning in the organization; seventh, OL and cultural changes are a dynamic circulatory system. So in conclusion, culture is the result and context factor of OL.
