Full textThe climatic variability of intense rainfall events in the Mediterranean is studied using the limited area climate model ALADIN-Climate, whose ability to simulate these events in South-East France is explored. Several sensitivity studies are conducted to assess the impact of various configuration parameters on the model's skill to downscale such extreme events : coupling with a Mediterranean sea model, use of the spectral nudging technique, size of the domain of integration and horizontal resolution. These studies are either performed within the so-called Big-Brother Experiment framework or through hindcast simulations driven by the ERA-40 reanalysis. The increase of resolution (from 50 to 12. 5 km) is found to be the only parameter affecting the modeling of extreme precipitation. The added value of the higher resolution on the way ALADIN-Climate simulates High Precipitation Events (HPE) in South-East France is carefully studied. Comparisons of ALADIN-Climate's skills to those of two State-of-the-art statistical methods of downscaling and detection of these events -- DSCLIM (Boé et al. , 2006) and "CYPRIM" (Nuissier et al. , 2011) -- show that with a resolution of 12. 5 km, the model offers better results than the first method and appears to be at least as good as the second one, therefore it constitutes an appropriate numerical tool to explore the climatic variability of the HPE. A climate change scenario (A1B) is then performed with this tool for the end of the XXe century and we assess the simulated changes affecting HPE in future climate. Several methods are proposed to analyse and display the results, suggesting an increase of both the frequency and intensity of the HPE

Full textThe Euro-Mediterranean region is subject to high aerosol loads of various origins and with high spatial and temporal variability. The climate of this region will be impacted by their direct effect on radiation but also by their semi-direct and indirect effects on clouds and atmospheric dynamics. This thesis work, which is part of the Med-CORDEX and ChArMEx research programmes, will address through regional climate modelling the question of the direct radiative effect of the various aerosols over the historical period, their evolution between the period 1971-2000 and the period 2021-2050 as well as the sensitivity of the future climate of this region to these aerosols. In order to take into account as fully as possible anthropogenic aerosols in the ALADIN-Climat regional climate model, used throughout this thesis work, a new simplified aerosol module to represent nitrate and ammonium particles has been implemented in its interactive aerosol scheme TACTIC. A set of simulations, taking into account or not nitrate and ammonium particles, were carried out over the period 1979-2016. The results showed the significant impact of these atmospheric particles on the Euro-Mediterranean climate with a contribution of 40% to the total AOD (at 550 nm) and a direct radiative forcing higher than that of sulphate and organic carbon particles from 2005. Over a longer period of time and using different scenarios, results show a decrease of total AOD of 35% over Europe between 1971-2000 and 2021-2050. This is mainly due to the decrease of the sulphate aerosols AOD, partly offset by the increase of nitrates. Nitrate particles will also have the highest total AOD contribution over Europe, of 45%, during the future period. This evolution of the various aerosols will impact their direct radiative forcing, with a significant decrease in that exerted by sulphate particles and an increase in that of nitrate and ammonium aerosols. These changes, which are robust under the different scenarios, explain on an annual average about 6% of the expected global warming over Europe between the two periods, mainly due to aerosols-radiation interactions but also to a change in cloud albedo (first indirect effect) and atmospheric dynamics over this region

Full textThe aim of this PhD work is to understand the mechanisms and regional responses of climate variability during the last deglaciation and the Holocene in the western Mediterranean Basin. Mediterranean environments are particularly vulnerable to climate hazards and anthropogenic pressure. The aim is to discuss natural and anthropogenic forcing from marine and continental palaeoenvironmental signals covering the last 14,000 years. To this end, two sedimentary sequences (Algerian Margin and Gulf of Lion) were the subject of multiproxy studies mainly based on palynological studies (pollen, dinoflagellate cysts and non-pollen palynomorphs), associated with sedimentological studies (MSCL, XRF, XRD), isotopic studies, molecular biomarkers (alkenones and n-alkanes) as well as climatic and hydrological quantifications. The cross-analysis of these signals, acquired with an average resolution of 150 years over the Holocene and 30 years over the extreme event of the 4.2 ka BP, has allowed us to discuss ocean-atmosphere-continental surface interactions, questioning the evolution of the marine and continental biospheres during the Holocene These palaeoenvironmental studies are based on the study of dinocyst and pollen assemblages reconstructed in the modem sediments of the two study areas. In summary, this work has revealed strong regional disparities at the orbital and infra-orbital scales along west-east and north-south transects. The growing impact of human societies, linked to an increasingly marked opening of the landscape, is discussed on the Algerian margin since 5000 years BP, and in the Gulf of Lion over the last 1000 years BP, with a stronger transmission of anthropisation markers on the shelf from the establishment of modem hydrographic conditions at around 3000 years BP

Full textData from 21 Aleppo pine stands have allowed to calculate a synthetic growth index which expresses inter-annual productivity variations. For each stand, three types of models (climatic, bioclimatic and biogeochemistry) have been confronted to the observations and validated. The biogeochemistry model is not sensitive to climatic changes but simulates a strong productivity increase linked to the increase of CO2 rate. The climatic model of growth simulates, in response of climatic change, a strong increase of productivity linked to the increase of spring temperatures. The bioclimatic model simulates a significant decrease of productivity linked to the increase of summer drought period. The response of a stand depends on the site conditions. The exposure, in fact, determines the thermal balance when the slope, the soil water capacity and the permeability of the substratum constraint the water balance

Full textThe SAFRAN-ISBA-MODCOU model is assessed and its physics are improved. The SAFRAN meteorological analysis is first validated in detail. The surface model ISBA is then modified to better describe the hydraulic conductivity in the soil. A strategy of calibration is defined and applied at the scale of France. The improved model is then used to assess the impacts of climate change in the Mediterranean region. A regional climate model is downscaled by two different methods. The study shows that the uncertainties related to the downscaling are important. Uncertainty related to the impact model is smaller, but must be taken into account for the extremes. In this region, the extremes of riverflows, and sometimes the means, will increase during the first half of the twenty-first century. At the end of the century, the scenario indicates a decline of the average of riverflows and the extremes will remain stable, leading to increased variability

qui la pilotent. L'impact régional d'un scénario climatique est analysé avec les modèles
non-couplés : le nombre de cyclogénèses diminue, les pluies associées augmentent au
printemps et en automne et diminuent en été. En outre, la Méditerranée se réchauffe,
se sale et sa circulation thermohaline s'affaiblit fortement. Cette thèse conclut de plus à
la nécessité des AORCMs pour étudier l'impact du changement climatique en Méditerranée.

Full textIn the Mediterranean Basin, Corsica houses some of the best preserved ecosystems in terms of habitat richness and vegetation type. It is also the French region the most affected by forest fires. Recent years of pastoral spending and global warming have greatly increased the probability of occurrence and spread of fire. In this context, the purpose of this thesis is to understand the causes and mechanisms of the fire regime in Corsica during the Holocene and to propose a prospective reading. The results of this work are those that started from the beginning of the Holocene and contributed to the diversification and diversification of the Mediterranean ecosystem. 6,000 to 5,000 years ago, when climatic conditions are less favourable for propagation and forest fires, agro-pastoral activities using the main agents of development of the disaster, are currently in Corsica. This work also proposes the use of the MDC to reconstruct the climatic conditions of fire hazard during the Holocene and thus define the reference values in known environmental contexts. On the way of this place, one begins to be Holocene with a climate earlier today, with sunshine and strong also that explains a fire regime passed at this time. However, the duration of the fire season (FSL) was limited to a hundred days. Whatever the evolution of climatic conditions scenario proposed by the IPCC for the current century, fire hazards calculated from the MDC and the FSL strongly increase. The MDC found comparable values at the beginning of the Holocene without being exceeded while the duration of the fire season (FSL) extended well beyond durations. We will then face the first time with a simultaneous increase in drought and human activities, which will increase the number of unprecedented days

Full textIn the context of climate change, as reflected by a dryer Mediterraneanbasin, this thesis focused on the study of the contemporary and future variability(1957-2100) of the wintertime (September to April) very long dryspells events (called VLDSe) in the Mediterranean basin. An original methodologywas developed in this thesis in order to define VLDSe as singularclimatic events, characterized by location, duration and spatial extent criteria.76 VLDSe were detected in the Mediterranean basin on the contemporaryperiod (1957-2013). These events are divided into 4 main geographicalpatterns: North-East, West, Scattered Localized and South-East. North-East and West configurations are associated with anticyclonic conditionslocated approximately 1 000 km northwestern to the areas affected by theVLDSe, favoring a clear sky and no precipitations. The Scattered Localizedand South-East configurations are special: the first one is characterized asa residual class grouping VLDSe with small spatial extent and distributedthroughout the entire basin, and the second one is characterized by seasonalVLDSe which are the continuation of the dry summer observed in the eastof the Mediterranean basin.Euro-Atlantic weather regimes have some control on the VLDSe. Thepositive phase of the north-atlantic oscillation regime (NAO+) is the onlyone that is clearly favorable to the development of VLDSe on almost the entirebasin. The east-atlantic regime (EA) does not show any control on theVLDSe, and the atlantic ridge (AR) and the negative phase of the northatlanticoscillation (NAO-) regimes are generally detrimental to VLDSe. However,some VLDSe can sometimes be associated with AR, EA and NAOregimes.This requires these three weather regimes to be associated withslightly higher atmospheric pressure northwest of the areas impacted bythe VLDSe, compared to their respective climatology. Long duration of theAR, EA and NAO+ regimes, which are coupled with sustained atmosphericstability, are preferentially associated with VLDSe, in contrast to the shortduration. Conversely, the long duration of the NAO- regime, reinforcingthe low atmospheric pressure on Europe and the Mediterranean basin, areweakly associated with VLDSe.Although the two climate models ALADIN52 and LMDZ4-NEMOMED8 differ in several respects, they agree in that VLDSe should be longer by 2100,especially in the RCP8.5 trajectory. A multi-model analysis with 12 CMIP5simulations shows that wintertime sea-level pressure tends to increase in theAtlantic Ocean, off the French coast and in the central the Mediterraneanbasin for the RCP8.5 trajectory. Conversely, the frequency and duration ofthe 4 weather regimes do not show significant trends until the end of the21st century.Finally, a study is carried out to assess the impact of VLDSe on agriculturalproduction in Spain. The number of VLDSe days has a larger impactson the yields of barley, wheat and oats (winter species and cultivatedthrough rainfed agriculture) than the simple ratio of dry days or seasonalrainfall amounts in Spain. A two-season case study, based on seasons withcomparable rainfall amounts, shows that in addition to yields, a VLDSecauses a significant decrease in soil moisture and in the Ebro River flow

Full textL'objectif de cette thèse est d'étudier le processus de décomposition des litières en région méditerranéenne et comment ce processus pouvait être affecté par le changement climatique. Dans un premier temps, nous avons abordé le rôle de la qualité et de la diversité des litières sur le processus de décomposition dans deux écosystèmes typiques de la région méditerranéenne française : la forêt à chêne et la garrigue à chêne kermès. Dans un second temps, nous avons étudié l'impact du changement climatique (via un stress hydrique aggravé) sur le processus de décomposition.Nous avons montré des effets de la diversité des litières sur le processus de décomposition et sur la structure des communautés d'organismes décomposeurs. Dans la forêt, les espèces compagnes de Q. pubescens favorisent la diversité et l'abondance des communautés d'organismes décomposeurs ainsi qu'un processus de décomposition plus efficace. A l'opposé, dans la garrigue, c'est l'espèce structurante qui favorise la décomposition et les décomposeurs.En ce qui concerne l'évolution de la relation diversité des litières - processus de décomposition dans un contexte de changement climatique, on observe une forte diminution des interactions synergiques en forêt (excepté à forte diversité végétale), alors qu'à l'opposé, cela entraine, en garrigue, une meilleure complémentarité entre les espèces avec une forte augmentation des effets synergiques.Mes résultats suggèrent que la diversité des communautés végétales joue un rôle important sur le processus de décomposition et mettent en avant que le maintien de cette diversité semble nécessaire dans un contexte de changement climatique

Full textWildfires impacting French forests are currently concentrated in the South, especially in the Mediterranean and Aquitaine regions. Climate projections for the 21st century in France question the impact of climate change on wildfire hazard. We focus on two particular issues: the evolution of the fire danger and fire regime in regions already facing frequent wildfires today, and the potential extension of the risk to new regions in the future.Climate change effect was first determined using projections of an empirical fire danger index (FWI) under future climate, computed for five contrasted climatic models under two greenhouse gases emission scenarios. These projections highlight a very strong increase in fire danger levels in the areas already facing wildfires, especially in the Mediterranean, with a very good agreement between climate models. The range of the increase in the North and the West, though existing, is more challenging to quantify, because of climate model uncertainties.This first approach was limited by the ability of FWI to represent fire activity. Therefore, we developed a probabilistic model for fire activity, aiming at projecting fire numbers and burnt areas under future climate. The approach considers that fires result from underlying random processes that determine the occurrence and the fire size based on the FWI and various spatiotemporal factors. The model was fitted following a Bayesian approach using the Promethee database, which records fire observations in the Mediterranean area. Model projections under historical and future conditions demonstrated that FWI projections underestimated projected fire activity increases, mainly due to the non-linearity of the fire-climate relation. Thus, fire danger increases projected in summer in the Mediterranean in 2080 (pessimistic scenario) are considerably lower (25 to 59%) than those for burnt areas (48 to 202%).This approach does not apply to regions where wildfires are currently sparse, and unreliably recorded, especially in Northern France. Yet we extrapolated the model, established over the Mediterranean area, to the rest of Southern France where data were sufficient. Among the difficulties encountered while extrapolating to the national scale, the variation of fuel structure is a critical issue. It was not included in the projections, but its implications are discussed

Full textThis thesis studies the links between development and climate change in Mediterranean countries to better understand the processes and interactions in specific games in the region, particularly in the Maghreb and the Mashreq. In Chapter 1, we review the state of scientific knowledge on climate change at global level and at Mediterranean level. This allows us to address the problem of climate projections and analyze the results for the Mediterranean. On this basis, in Chapter 2, by comparing the projections of climate change and the local context of development, we highlight a relatively higher vulnerability of the developing Mediterranean countries. We discuss in Chapter 3, methods and tools to estimate the economic cost of climate change and deduce lessons for the Mediterranean countries. To go further in the characterization and understanding of the mechanisms at play in the Mediterranean, we propose, in Chapter 4, econometric approaches using long term panel data. We test the impact of climate variables on, first, the level of GDP per capita and, second, on cereal yields. The results show that even rich Mediterranean countries are sensitive to climate change - at least over the period 1950-2000 - although much less than Southern and Eastern developing countries of the Mediterranean basin. Furthermore, we confirm that agriculture is a major channel of climate change impact in the economy, particularly in developing countries. The issue of water appears in a key parameter in adaptation to climate change. Thus, in Chapter 5, we analyze the state of water resources, the existing modes of governance and adaptation options available to Mediterranean arid countries. We present a simulation of future demands by sector in North Africa, enabling us to obtain orders of magnitude of the expected benefits of different policy options that can be followed by the government. We show that water demand management is one of the key tools to adapt to climate change in Mediterranean countries and that its implementation depends primarily on governance reforms

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to study allelopathic interactions in the downy oak forest in the mediterranean region and to consider how these interactions can be affected by climate change. We have shown that the dominant tree Q. pubescens and its companion species A. monspessulanum and C. coggygria have different allelopathic potentialities, evaluated in vitro on herbaceous target plants, depending on the phenological stage of the leaves, which could in natura affect the germination and growth of understory herbaceous plants. These differences in allelopathic effect may result not only from differences in the quantity of allelopathic compounds produced, but also from qualitative differences observed as a function of the phenological stage. This suggests that the allelopathic effect may vary over time to match the stage of development of the target herbaceous plants. On one of the target plants used in the bioassays, the allelopathic effects were further accentuated by changing the water and / or thermal conditions which suggests possible modifications of the allelopathic potential of the plants to be expected with climate change.Our results in the plant nursery showed the allelopathic potential of cotinus and pinus on the growth of oak seedlings, whatever the watering conditions (stressed or unstressed). By affecting in particular the biomass of the root system, the growth of which is a key element of the mediterranean species to resist the prolonged summer drought, these interactions could play an important role in the regeneration processes of downy oak

Full textMy PhD work focused on studying the effects of litter diversity and soil macrofauna on microbial communities under water stress. In the first part, the monitoring of microbial communities associated with leaf litter (dead leaves) and phyllosphere (living leaves) for one year under natural conditions, showed marked differences depending on the physiological state of leaves, the importance of the host plant species on microbial communities and the changes of communities during the year. A second part presents the results of a microcosms decomposition experience under two humidity conditions, a functional dissimilarity gradient of litter species and the presence / absence of a detritivorous macrofauna. Our results reinforce the importance of the plant species on microbial communities and show that the presence of scavengers encourages microbial diversity. A final section assesses the impact of a decrease in precipitation and litter diversity on microbial communities in an in situ decomposition experiment during one year, using rain excluder devices . The composition of litter mixtures has a stronger influence on the microbial communities than lower rainfall. In conclusion, the results of my work tend to underestimate the effect of a decrease in precipitation on microbial communities, but emphasize the sensitivity of the interactions between plant community, macro- and micro-organisms to climate change

Full textThe Mediterranean region is one of the 25 hotspots in the world. This biological richness is linked from centuries with human-made seminatural habitats, such as agropastoral grasslands. Since the end of the 19th century, the rural decolonization is followed by land abandonment and that conducts to alteration of seminatural grasslands by encroachment and afforestation. Consequences of this habitat alteration are investigated on a rare endemic species particularly difficult to detect, the Orsini's meadow viper (Vipera ursinii). This study shows that populations are fragmented and isolated, and have a high within spatial structure. Four distinct evolutionary units have been identified, each one representing an original and unit part of the genetic variability of the species in France, whose loss should be considered as definitive. Our results show that the species range is narrow extended compared to suitable habitats. This difference does not result from non detection bias neither missing of an important parameter in using models but rather by a low colonization ability of sites which became favourable after the last glaciation. We showed that prescribed fire effects used to maintain open grasslands are strongly unfavourable to the Orsini's meadow viper. In last, analysis of forest management with theoretical approach showed the strong potentiality of forest cuttings to population status improvement. Thus, this thesis aims to define a simple and effective method to obtain quickly an assessment of populations status and extinction risks of this rare species difficult to detect. In addition results obtained on this species are of broader inferences to understand impact of afforestation due to pastoral abandonment, near-future climatic change and management practice that are currently proposed for Mediterranean species with low dispersal rate

These events are divided into 4 main geographicalpatterns: North-East, West, Scattered Localized and South-East. North-East and West configurations are associated with anticyclonic conditionslocated approximately 1 000 km northwestern to the areas affected by theVLDSe, favoring a clear sky and no precipitations. The Scattered Localizedand South-East configurations are special: the first one is characterized asa residual class grouping VLDSe with small spatial extent and distributedthroughout the entire basin, and the second one is characterized by seasonalVLDSe which are the continuation of the dry summer observed in the eastof the Mediterranean basin.Euro-Atlantic weather regimes have some control on the VLDSe. Thepositive phase of the north-atlantic oscillation regime (NAO+) is the onlyone that is clearly favorable to the development of VLDSe on almost the entirebasin. The east-atlantic regime (EA) does not show any control on theVLDSe, and the atlantic ridge (AR) and the negative phase of the northatlanticoscillation (NAO-) regimes are generally detrimental to VLDSe. However,some VLDSe can sometimes be associated with AR, EA and NAOregimes.This requires these three weather regimes to be associated withslightly higher atmospheric pressure northwest of the areas impacted bythe VLDSe, compared to their respective climatology. Long duration of theAR, EA and NAO+ regimes, which are coupled with sustained atmosphericstability, are preferentially associated with VLDSe, in contrast to the shortduration. Conversely, the long duration of the NAO- regime, reinforcingthe low atmospheric pressure on Europe and the Mediterranean basin, areweakly associated with VLDSe.Although the two climate models ALADIN52 and LMDZ4-NEMOMED8 differ in several respects, they agree in that VLDSe should be longer by 2100,especially in the RCP8.5 trajectory. A multi-model analysis with 12 CMIP5simulations shows that wintertime sea-level pressure tends to increase in theAtlantic Ocean, off the French coast and in the central the Mediterraneanbasin for the RCP8.5 trajectory. Conversely, the frequency and duration ofthe 4 weather regimes do not show significant trends until the end of the21st century.Finally, a study is carried out to assess the impact of VLDSe on agriculturalproduction in Spain. The number of VLDSe days has a larger impactson the yields of barley, wheat and oats (winter species and cultivatedthrough rainfed agriculture) than the simple ratio of dry days or seasonalrainfall amounts in Spain. A two-season case study, based on seasons withcomparable rainfall amounts, shows that in addition to yields, a VLDSecauses a significant decrease in soil moisture and in the Ebro River flow

Full textPollen analysis has been performed on six sections (Santa Lucia, Montalbano Jonico, Site ODP 976; Tsampika and Shamb) placed along a 4,000 km long transect from the Western Mediterranean region to Little Caucasus. These sections recorded same vegetation changes related to climatic cycles occurred throughout the Mediterranean region during the Early-Middle Pleistocene (1. 600-0. 700 Ma), despite an observed longitudinal gradient. Mesothermic taxa were affected by the increasing aridity and the extremes related to climatic cycles during this considered time-window. “Long-term” vegetation successions were controlled by climatic cycles related to the obliquity forcing. A similar vegetation dynamics with short and longer-term durations were forced by precession and its modulator (the eccentricity), respectively. Influences of both parameters were superimposed. The expected shift from obliquity to 100 ka long-cycles related to eccentricity is not observed in the Mediterranean region during the Mid-Pleistocene Transition

Full textGlobal climate change leads significant reactions on marine ecosystems which, when dealing with sessile species, can drive to episodes of mass mortalities. In the north-western Mediterranean Sea, recent events of mortalities severely impacted gorgonian communities, threatening their survival, but also all the associated biodiversity. The implementation of strategies of preservations requires preliminary acquisitions of the knowledge at ecological, evolutionary, physiological, biochemical, genomic and genetics levels. In this ambitious framework, these doctoral studies aimed to better define the answers induced by thermal stress of two Mediterranean symbiotic Cnidarians : the white gorgonian Eunicella singularis and the sea anemone Anemonia viridis. A first part of the works was carried out of two populations of the white gorgonian, associated with their photosynthetic symbionts (zooxanthelles), collected at two geographical zones with contrasted thermal profiles. This study allowed us to identify the superior limits of thermal resistance of the populations and to estimate the possible links between the genetic varieties of the hosts and the symbionts, and their thermal resistance. Complementary studies then allowed identifying, on this symbiotic gorgonian early molecular indicators induced by a hyperthermia, implying the global antioxidant defences capacities and the degree of protein ubiquitination. Finally, our studies led on the sea anemone allowed to deepen our knowledge developed on this model concerning the antioxidant enzymes and in particular the glutathione peroxidases (GPx). The measures of the GPx activities in the different holobiont compartments did not reveal major modifications during the stress, but the appearance of one activity band induced by the hyperthermia could represent a new potential marker of stress

Full textThe Mediterranean Heavy Precipitation Events (HPEs) that affect the northwestern Mediterranean every fall are high-impact weather events. The study of their evolution on climate scales is therefore of great importance and remains a challenge for the climate modelling community. For some years now, it has been possible to use kilometre-scale regional climate models (Convection- Permitting Regional Climate Models or CP-RCMs, 1-3 km) in which deep convection is explicitly simulated. These models make it possible to get closer to the spatio-temporal scales involved and open up new perspectives in terms of analysis. The aim of this thesis is to determine the response of northwestern Mediterranean HPEs to human-induced climate change, using this new generation of climate models combined with an object-oriented approach. The tracking of heavy precipitation systems is applied to observational datasets, to simulations carried out with the CNRM-AROME CP-RCM and to simulations of the first ensemble of CP-RCMs available as part of the international CORDEX FPS Convection programme over a common domain covering the north-western Mediterranean. The first part of this thesis is devoted to evaluating the performance of CP-RCMs in comparison with high-resolution reference observation data. The added value of CP-RCM compared with regional models with coarser resolution (12-15 km) is demonstrated for precipitation extremes, particularly at hourly time steps. The object-oriented approach also shows that, despite a few residual biases, CP-RCMs are capable of correctly representing the principal properties of heavy precipitation systems, both in terms of number and position over the entire domain, and in terms of duration, intensity, surface area, volume, speed and severity over the French Mediterranean, where observations enable these properties to be assessed in detail. The good performance of these models lends greater confidence to their future projections. The second part focuses on the future evolution of Mediterranean HPEs using the object-oriented approach applied to mid and end-of-century simulations of the CP-RCMs ensemble in scenario mode to study changes in the properties of heavy precipitation systems in a warmer climate. At the end of the century, and according to a scenario of high emissions, certain changes are found in most of the simulations and can be described as robust. For example, an increase in the frequency of fall heavy precipitation systems over a large part of the domain, particularly from central Italy to the northern Balkans, is accompanied by a doubling of the areas affected by these events. Over the French Mediterranean region, the models agree on an increase in the intensity, surface area and volume of precipitating systems. However, even with this new generation of models, significant uncertainties remain, particularly for changes in frequency over southeastern France, probably due to differences in the synoptic conditions imposed by the CP-RCMs driving models. Similarly, the ensemble projects a wide range of possible changes in the properties of systems, particularly for the most intense ones and even when standardised by the corresponding regional warming. While CP-RCMs are the appropriate modelling tools for studying precipitation extremes, efforts must be continued to produce larger, better constructed ensembles, probably supplemented by machine learning methods, in order to provide useful climate information at scales relevant to adaptation policies

Full textThe Mediterranean Sea (MED) is now clearly identified as an area highly sensitive to climate change. The fundamental question that has guided all this work can be summarized as follows: \\ How is the biogeochemistry of the MED likely to react to changes in riverine inputs and climate change? \\The first step of this work was to evaluate the coupled (off-line) NEMO-MED12/Eco3M-MED model in the light of available observations. At the end of this preliminary work, we were interested in the effects on the biogeochemistry of the MED of the variations observed since the 1980s on the terrigenous nutrient inputs (rivers and runoff). This thesis has shown that their variations have significantly influenced the biogeochemistry of the MED. This first result shows the need to include in the climate evolution scenarios, river inputs in relevant nutrients.\The second part aimed at studying the effects on the biogeochemistry of the MED of variations in hydrodynamic forcings induced by climate change. To do so, the IPCC RCP 8.5 scenario was used to force the coupled model. The simulations carried out within the framework of this thesis showed a significant effect of these physical changes on the biogeochemistry of the MED, such as a decrease in integrated primary production (-10%) and carbon export at 1000 m (-15 to -20%). It is likely that nutrient inputs from rivers will play an increasingly important role in the biogeochemistry of the MED in the future

Full textSituated in the northern part of Tyrrhenian sea (western Mediterranean), the East-Corsica margin is a small confined basin with a wide variety of sedimentary environments which are the focus of several studies. In order to reconstruct changes linked to paleo-climatic-oceanographic-environmental variations, in this margin, a multi-proxy analysis was made on late Quaternary sediments. This multi-proxy approach associates variation of benthic foraminifer and ostracod assemblages to oxygen and carbon isotopes, and to sedimentological data such as sortable silt and magnetic susceptibility. As a result, it has been shown that in the East-Corsica basin: 1/ the sedimentary transport is closely linked to climatic oscillations with a strong activation during cold intervals; 2/ the Levantine intermediate water circulation was intensified during Greenland stadials and Heinrich events. This leads to a bottom ventilation increase during these colds phases; 3/ bottom conditions were characterized by an establishment of eutrophic conditions during the sapropel deposition periods of eastern Mediterranean

Full textSeabirds are particularly vulnerable to the direct and indirect effects of climate change, however little is known about those impacts outside of the breeding season. This lack of knowledge is problematic because the conditions encountered during migration and wintering strongly shape seabird population dynamics. It is therefore essential to understand the effects of climate on their winter distribution and migration routes. Linking the distribution of organisms to environmental factors is therefore a primary task benefiting from the concept of energyscapes (defined as the variation of an organism's energy requirements across space according to environmental conditions) which has recently provided a mechanistic explanation for the distribution of many animals. In this context, we have predicted the current and future winter habitats of five species representing 75% of the seabird community in the North Atlantic (Alle alle, Fratercula arctica, Uria aalge, Uria lomvia and Rissa tridactyla). To this aim, we monitored the movements of more than 1500 individuals to identify the birds' preferred habitats through resource selection functions based on the modeling of their energy expenditure and prey availability. Electronic tracking data were also overlaid with cyclone locations to map areas of high exposure for the seabird community across the North Atlantic. In addition, we explored the energetic consequences of seabird exposure to storms using a mechanistic bioenergetic model (Niche MapperTM). Finally, we examined the impact of total summer sea ice melt from 2050 on Arctic bird migration. Our analyses predict a northward shift in the preferred wintering areas of the North Atlantic seabird community, especially if global warming exceeds 2°C. Our results suggest that cyclonic conditions do not increase the energy requirements of seabirds, implying that they die from the unavailability of prey and/or inability to feed during cyclones. Finally, the melting sea ice at the North Pole may soon allow 29 species of Arctic birds to make new trans-Arctic migrations between the Atlantic and the Pacific. We also estimate that an additional 26 currently migratory species could remain in the Arctic year-round. This work illustrates how climate change could radically alter the biogeography of migratory species and we provide a methodological toolbox to assess and predict these changes by combining movement ecology and energetic physiology

Full textThis thesis focuses on trophic interactions between soil biota (microorganisms, detritivorous and predators) in three forests from South of France (pine forest, downy and holm oak forests) and how climate change expected in the Mediterranean region (via amplified drought) could affect these relationships. We reported that the soil organisms’ communities were strongly influenced by the litter identity of and by the forest type. Downy oak litter favored the abundance of all soil communities while holm oak forest was unfavorable for many groups of organisms. In a climate change context, experimentally amplified drought alters the soil food web with distinct responses according to trophic group and forest type. These results suggest that within the same Mediterranean region, climate change could differently modify the soil biota with consequences on their contribution to the litter decomposition process

Studies about selection of marine habitats and trends caused by global warming are growing. The telemetric monitoring provide valuable information on the spatial and temporal variability on distribution of marine predators. All the issues are very important, we have decided to focus on seabirds. The first objective of this thesis project is to study the distribution and selection of foraging habitat of tropical seabirds during their reproductive phase and during their migrations. To characterize the habitat of an abiotic point of view. The second objective of this thesis project is to use scenarios for ocean habitats produced by IPCC to simulate, using habitat models, the temporal evolution of the distribution of suitable habitat. The third objective of this thesis project is to use the available monitoring data to identify "hotspots" of biodiversity. We looked, at first, the puffins Pacific. More particularly, we studied the variations between the different colonies of the same species, from the viewpoint of the distribution, activity and habitat selection. Then we studied the impact of the evolution of climate change on wintering habitat of Barau’s Petrels (Pterodroma baraui). We built habitat selection models. These models were then used to predict the evolution of wintering habitat in 2100, according to different IPCC scenarios. Finally, we have compiled the available telemetry data on seabirds, sea turtles and marine mammals to study the distribution of marine megafauna in the Indian Ocean, and to identify hotspots of high density and high diversity. Full textA better understanding of the origin and evolution of the diversity of life requires the development of biogeographical approaches based on the phylogeography. This PhD thesis study considers the phylogeographical structure of the Common Myrtle (Myrtus communis L., Myrtaceae), a characteristic and common plant of the Mediterranean matorral, and its relationship with the Nivelle Myrtle (Myrtus nivellei Batt. & Trab.), endemic to the central Saharan mountains. An objective is also to examine especially the influence of palaeogeography and climatic changes on the genetic diversity of these two taxa. Our approach aims at being integrative, combining palaeobotanical data, genetic data (sequencing and multilocus genotyping), modeling of molecular evolution, polymorphism and heritability of the growth in controlled conditions, and modeling of bioclimatic niche. The analysis of 173 populations of the Common Myrtle and 23 populations of the Nivelle Myrtle reveals a strong phylogeographical signal, whose spatio-temporal framework was provided by the dating of divergences and the reconstruction of ancestral areas within the molecular phylogenies using Bayesian analytical methods. Three main results can be highlighted. (i) With an origin dated to the early Miocene, the history of M. communis can be summarized by two periods of diversification associated with the environmental changes occurring in the Miocene/Pliocene transition and in the Pleistocene. A vicariance phenomenon has induced the isolation of an eastern Mediterranean lineage. Recent diversification events have also been detected in the western part of the Mediterranean Basin, with in-return migration to the eastern Mediterranean, and also dispersal to the Azores and Madeira islands, and to the Sahara. (ii) Within the refugia-mountains of the Central Sahara, the alternation of wet and dry periods seems to have induced the isolation of the populations of M. nivellei per mountain range, with a strong genetic erosion. In parallel to this high regional differentiation, gene flows within these mountain ranges and vegetative multiplication have been detected. (iii) Finally, the absence of divergence of Mediterranean insular populations of M. communis contrasts with the long-term persistence of Myrtle lineages restricted to the Azores and Madeira islands, and to the speciation of M. nivellei in the Sahara. Full textOne of the 21st century’s greatest scientific issues is to predict the impact of climate change on the functioning of ecosystems. In the Ocean, the plankton plays a pivotal role in climate regulation, biogeochemical cycles, and marine food webs dynamics. The zooplankton transfer energy from primary producers to higher trophic levels, while actively exporting organic matter from the surface to the deep ocean. However, the links between zooplanktonic diversity and marine ecosystem functioning are still poorly understood. During this PhD project, we have studied the taxonomic and functional diversity of the major marine zooplanktonic groups, the copepods, in biodiversity hotspot: the Mediterranean Sea. This work aims to: (i) define new zooplankton functional groups based on functional traits of many copepod species; (ii) test whether said groups present distinct environmental niches; and (iii) explore how climate change may modify the diversity of Mediterranean assemblages, and the associated functional diversity. A new dataset of species functional traits was gathered from the literature and was used to identify functional groups. The species’ occurrences were used to model their environmental niches, thus highlighting the control of abiotic conditions on the distribution of species. Multiple niche models were implemented to predict the evolution of the α and β diversity of Mediterranean copepod species assemblages under different climate change scenarios. Finally, the results from this PhD are discussed to provide a synoptic vision of the impact of climate change on copepod functional diversity in the Mediterranean Sea

Full textMy work during my PhD has been the evaluation of the influence of solar forcing on climate variability during the last millennium with the IPSLCM4_v2 coupled model. I achieved two numerical simulations of the climate of the last millennium for this purpose. The first one consists in a millennium-long control integration, and the second one (SGI) was forced by reconstructions of the Total Solar Irradiance, CO2 concentrations and orbital parameters during the last millennium. The main results of my thesis are : the forcings significantly affect the temperature variance for geographical extent wider than 5. 106km² (extent of Europe). This result brought the spatial framework for model-data comparisons. The simulated amplitude of the Northern Hemisphere temperature variability is in agreement with the temperature reconstructions. A mismatch has been evidenced between SGI and the reconstructions between 1000 and 1200 AD, during the so-called Medieval Warm Period. The study of the forcings signature in Europe has shown that solar forcing appears clearly in numerical simulations from the ANR ESCARSEL project, but it much weaker in the studied temperature reconstruction. The conclusion of my work is that the solar forcing used in the simulation does not allow explaining totally the secular temperature evolution between 1000 and 1850 AD, either on the Northern Hemisphere or in Europe

Full textHuman activities seriously threaten biodiversity. In terms of global changes, overexploitation of populations and habitat destruction/degradation are at the top of the list of factors responsible for biodiversity loss. Climate change is increasing in magnitude and adding additional pressure on species. In response to the increase in global temperatures, communities are changing as a result of the shift in the geographical distribution of species towards the poles. But the accumulation of anthropogenic pressures is likely to produce interaction effects that limit community adjustment to global warming. In this critical context, conservation biology aims to reconcile human activities with biodiversity conservation. In this thesis I have investigate how the accumulation of anthropogenic pressures can limit the adjustment of communities to global warming and to identify solutions that could be put in place to facilitate their adaptation to this warming. I have used the wintering waterbird species in the countries of the Mediterranean basin as a model for my study. These iconic species benefit from an international census to monitor their populations in response to hunting and the degradation of the wetlands on which they depend. The Mediterranean is a highly anthropized region where the use of natural resources exerts significant pressures on wetlands and their biodiversity. In response, countries have different strategies to protect these ecosystems, making this region an interesting experimental plan to measure the impact in global changes on species assemblage based on conservation measures implemented. By studying the response of communities to global warming under a gradient of habitat loss/degradation, I show that community adjustment is reduced or even prevented by wetland degradation. The Ramsar Convention aims to protect wetlands and their biodiversity by maintaining a rational use of natural resources. In assessing the effect of this convention, I show that its effectiveness in conserving bird populations depends on the implementation of other protection tools, but that its role is crucial in countries where environmental legislation is weak. Finally, I assess the capacity of international conventions to facilitate community adjustment to global warming by reducing population pressures. I compared the communities' response between countries that have ratified the Bern Convention, those that have started its strictly regulatory application under the Birds Directive (European Union) and those that have not ratified these conventions. The result is clear, the more precise and strictly regulatory the regulations, the more communities and strictly protected species adjust to the increase in temperatures.In conclusion, human activities are a threat to biodiversity, but conservation measures, by reducing pressures on populations, facilitate their adaptation to climate change. Waterbird conservation requires international collaboration and the establishment of strictly regulatory laws to protect wetlands and species, while ensuring sustainable use of resources

Full textHarsh environmental conditions encountered in North Atlantic during wintertime, characterized by frequent extreme weather events, are among the most challenging constraints for endothermic animals. Seabirds, which experience this environment for many months per year, play a central role in North Atlantic food webs, notably as top predators and indicators of marine ecosystems. In the current context of climate change, pronounced in North Atlantic waters, it is therefore a major objective to understand how seabirds respond and adapt to these environmental constraints shaping their survival and their population dynamics. We used a multidisciplinary approach (combining microelectronics, stable isotopic analyses, bioenergetics modelling and demography) focused on individual energy balance, to study the ecophysiological plasticity of the 3 main alcid species of the North Atlantic. We found that harsh winter conditions induce an energetic bottleneck for seabirds which might explain recurrent events of winter mass mortality, so called ‘seabird winter wrecks'. In response to increased energy expenditure, we showed that seabirds can adopt different strategies allowing higher energy intake. They can modulate their vertical (diving behaviour) and/or horizontal (migration) movements, as well as their trophic status, depending on the spatial and temporal availability of their prey. All together, these results constitute one of the first comprehensive studies of seabird winter ecology. These insights are essential to a better understanding of their population dynamics and constitute a firm foundation to future investigations of the impact of climate change on marine top predators

Full textThis work takes place in the context of climate change. We aimed to explore plant litter microbial communities' functioning depending on climate contrasts Northern/Southern Mediterranean but also according to inland/coastal context, and to assess their response to aridification stresses, considering the effect i) of the type of litter (plant species identity and mixture) and ii) of the preexposure to stress intrinsic of coastal environments. Aridity stress was applied in the laboratory (drying /rewetting cycles) and in natura via "litter bags" transfer from France to Algeria. Results show that microbial biomass and basal respiration depend on litter chemical traits (C/N and lignin/N): when these ratios increase, microbial biomass decreases, while the effect on respiration depends on the climate contrasts. The effect of binary litter mixtures on microbes depends on the climate context and the mixture composition: some mixtures seem to limit carbon release through heterotrophic respiration in Algerian arid context. In addition, a particular microbial functioning of coastal environments was highlighted: i) preexposure to coastal constraints limited the effect of stress applied in the laboratory on microbial catabolic structures ii) the in natura experiment showed that microbial responses to stress depend on the context (coastal/inland) but also on litter type, highlighting litter influence even at large spatial scales

Full textPoverty and climate change are two of the most urgent issues facing the world. The view that poverty represents a constraint for household’s adaptive capacities is widely accepted in the climate change literature. However, most research has focused on financial resources, thus ignoring the multidimensional nature of poverty. In this study, a cross-sectional survey is used to explore the relationship between poverty and adaptive capacities in northern Benin. Three measures of poverty (monetary, multidimensional and traditional) were calculated along with two indicators of adaptive capacities (farm-associated changes and perceived coping strategies). A significant lack of overlap was found between the three poverty indices. Multiple deprivations are negatively associated with both crop-related changes and perceived coping strategies. Improved economic status, through monetary or traditional asset growth, is associated with increased innovations, but only for the poorest households. Results of the multivariate analysis also suggest that in a context of rural poverty, social capital plays an important, and potentially compensating role in fostering adaptive capacities. Overall, this study illustrates that a purely economic view, most often relying on a single poverty measure, is insufficient to understand the complexity of the poverty-adaptive capacity nexus. Full textIn a context of ecological uncertainty linked to climate variability and change, how can the sustainability of the resources of the wetland of Lake Wégnia in the Koulikoro region in Mali be ensured, while allowing neighboring communities to benefit from them? This is the central question around which this thesis revolves. To approach it, the "adaptive management" approach, relying on the effective participation of local actors and the taking into account of their traditional ecological knowledge in the management process of this lake, was favored. The approach is also based on a methodology using various complementary tools to collect, process, and analyze data. Field surveys and analysis of satellite images have shown the vulnerability of natural resources in the study area (particularly Lake Wégnia) to the combined effects of climate change and human activities. However, local communities derive their livelihood directly from these natural resources. As a result, the vulnerability of natural resources consequently leads to the vulnerability of the livelihoods of these communities. In order to reduce the vulnerability of the communities concerned, certain actions were undertaken: the analysis of the situation of the Lake Wégnia basin; identification of the main threats and local adaptation strategies; the development of an improved action plan and a monitoring plan and their implementation. The action plan included activities such as reforestation around lakes Wégnia and Kononi, the construction of stone bunds perpendicular to the ravines that lead to these lakes, fish farming in ponds, and the establishment of a monitoring committee for the monitoring of achievements. Finally, the activities implemented were evaluated after an observation period (the duration of which varied depending on the activity) to draw lessons on the basis of the results obtained. From these lessons, recommendations were made with a view to designing a potential future action plan.

Full textThe objective of this thesis is a study of the consequences of recent climate change on the health and the growth of Pinus sylvestris by the quantification and spatialisation of their effects. The remote sensing was used to estimate the health status of P. Sylvestris via the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) at local and landscape scales. This analysis allowed an assessment of the relative importance of local attributes, e. G. Elevation, aspect and relative moisture index in the population decline observed due to a decrease of water availability as a result of a succession of dry years. Measures of shoot growth and the expression of sexuality of P. Sylvestris showed that the climate from years 2003 to 2005 was unfavourable to both growth and cone (female) production but was promoted the production of flowers (male). Radial growth has decreased at all sites, independent of local conditions. The decrease in radial growth indicates that the growing conditions of this species worsened prior to 2000. An analysis of the relationships between climate and ring widths allowed the identification of the main monthly climatic variables controlling tree-ring widths of this species. Amongst these, precipitation during April and May promotes growth at low altitude and May and June precipitation promotes growth at high altitude sites, together with February temperatures In contrast, June temperatures have a negatively effect on tree growth. The combined effects of a positive influence of precipitation with a negative influence of June temperatures underline the importance of water stress during the summer growth period. Using this information, a predictive model was constructed using response functions, to test the reaction of the P. Sylvestris to increases in the frequency of extremely unfavourable years, such as 2003. This analysis showed that year 2003 was not an isolated exceptional year, but forms a set of years with unfavourable climatic conditions, which began in 2000

Full textGlobal socioeconomic and climatic changes will increase the pressure on water resources in the Mediterranean region in the next decades. This thesis contemplates the question of how heterogeneously distributed water constraints might foster inter-basin interactions. To do so, it is necessary to assess localised water scarcity in terms of both water quantities and economic values, in a framework combining a river basin level modelling with an extended geographic coverage. The methodological approach used is generic hydroeconomic modelling.The first part of the thesis is dedicated to the projection and valuation of water demands. For the domestic sector, the approach is to build threepart inverse demand functions, calibrated at the country scale, taking into account structural change. For the agricultural sector, the economic benefits of irrigation water are calculated based on a yield comparison approach between rainfed and irrigated crops.The second part concentrates on the supply-side of the hydroeconomic model. Operating rules of the reservoirs and water allocation between demands are determined based on the maximisation of water benefits over time and space. A parameterisation-simulation-optimisation approach is used, with hedging parameters and branch allocation parameters optimisation. The model is applied to Algeria, at the 2050 horizon.The last part explores how this hydroeconomic model could be used to investigate inter-basin issues. In a context of heterogeneous water availability between basins, water dependent activities could relocate from water scarce areas to less constrained locations. The last chapter of the thesis suggests looking at the impacts of water scarcity on economic activities location and population migration in an economic geography framework

Full textThe Mediterranean basin has been identified as one of the world's most vulnerable regions to climatic and anthropogenic changes and constitutes a water crisis' hot spot. Under such context, questions on water resources management arise. Integrated methodologies taking into account evolution in water resources availability and water demands are thus generated. A first methodology accounting for the Mediterranean basin specific conditions is developed to assess the current and future water stress state of this region. The medium-term evolution of water stress is investigated using climatic scenarios and a water-use scenario based on efficiency improvements following the recommendations of the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development. Currently, the southern and eastern rims are experiencing high to severe water stress. By the 2050 horizon, a 30–50% decline in freshwater resources is simulated over most of the Mediterranean basin and total water withdrawals are projected to double. Water stress could hence increase over the whole Mediterranean basin. If progresses in efficiency are reached, total water withdrawals would stabilize over the Mediterranean basin and even make them decrease (10–40%) in many northern catchments. Water stress could thus be tempered in some eastern catchments and kept to low on the northern rim. A second integrated water resources modelling framework was developed over the Ebro catchment (Spain) in order to evaluate water allocation for the domestic and agricultural sector as well as for environmental purposes. The catchment was divided into 9 sub-catchments to which 11 demand sites were attributed, in order to take into account the different hydro-climatic regimes and the influence of dams on hydrological regimes. This method defines current pressures applied to water resources and evaluates the evolution of water allocation by the medium term under climatic and water-use scenarios considering population growth and irrigated areas expansion. Currently, water demands are satisfied over the Ebro catchment. In 2050, water resources are projected to decline by 30-35% during the spring and summer seasons. Environmental and domestic water demands should still be satisfied but agricultural water demands could have to face severe water shortages during the summer season. These two modeling frameworks establish a dialogue between water resources and water demands at different space scales and give indexes on the capacity to satisfy water demands under climatic and anthropogenic scenarios. These studies provide original approaches to evaluate water resources current and future availability, to identify the most vulnerable regions to water use conflicts and to better orientate adaptation strategies. In a context of climatic and anthropogenic changes, such frameworks are a first step to better sustain water management policies and to support the co-construction of scenarios between users, policy-makers and scientists

Full textThe extratropical transition is the transformation of a tropical cyclone into an extratropical cyclone during its migration towards the midlatitudes. During its interaction with its new baroclinic environment, the cyclone can reintensify through complex dynamical and diabatic processes. It can also have a impact downstream from the strengthening of a Rossby wave train, which quickly propagates and of which the breaking is often the trigger of extreme weather events. The complexity of dynamical and diabatic processes lead then to a reduction of the downstream predictability. Hurricanes Florence and Helene over the North Atlantic contributed that way to the triggering of extreme weather events in September 2006 in the Mediterranean, respectively, an intense precipitation event and a rarer phenomenon, a Medicane (Mediterranean hurricane). Helene was distinguished from Florence by its predominant diabatic processes during the reintensification over a warmer ocean, from which it maintained tropical characteristics. Helene was an exceptional case from its three reintensifications in three days, induced by the elongation of three filaments of potential vorticity, in addition to the development of the Medicane downstream. Both extreme weather events in the Mediterranean were missed from the midrange deterministic forecast. As diabatic processes control the impact of the hurricanes on the Rossby wave trains, the uncertainty in their description was investigated. For the first time, numerical simulations were performed with the Meso-NH model over a large domain with an explicit resolution of deep convection, taking advantage of the massive parallel computing capabilities of the model. A weak sensitivity to the horizontal resolution of the model was found in the precipitation of the hurricanes, thus in their impact on the Rossby wave trains and in the extreme weather events in the Mediterranean. The track of Helene showed instead a high sensitivity to its phasing with the Rossby wave train, that was influenced by the horizontal resolution of the model. This high sensitivity was found again in the ensemble forecasts from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, where the developement of the Medicane required the phasing of Helene with the Rossby wave train. Targeted perturbation of initial conditions around Helene and the upstream trough were sufficient to predict the Medicane at 108-h lead time in a Meso-NH simulation. The results show the possible impact of extratropical transitions over the North Atlantic, which take place during the same season as most high precipitation episodes in the Mediterranean. A reduction in the uncertainty of the forecast of an extratropical transition is therefore one of the issues for an improvement of the forecast of extreme weather events in the Autumn season, over the Mediterranean region

The results suggest that the sea surface temperature anomalies forced by the summer (june-august) atmospheric circulation are able to produce a negative feedback onto this circulation on timescales of about one week. Besides, this thesis suggests that taking into account the ocean diurnal variations can improve the representation of intraseasonal SST variability and the mean summer states of the ocean and atmosphere

Full textLonger drought periods and/or overall less precipitation are thought to be major consequences of ongoing climate change in the Mediterranean region. These changes in the water regime will likely affect community composition, biodiversity and ecosystem processes, but very little is known about how biodiversity and changes in precipitation interactively affect ecosystem functioning. In my PhD thesis, I aimed to quantify the role of plant diversity in the response of Mediterranean shrubland ecosystem to a decrease in water availability, with a particular interest in belowground processes, such as soil microbial community functioning and functional responses in plant roots.I used a rhizotron approach under partially controlled conditions to study plant growth responses to repetitive severe droughts, with a particular focus on root growth. Two individuals of the same species or in all possible combinations of the three dominating species at our field site (Quercus coccifera, Cistus albidus, Brachypodium retusum) were grown together in a rhizotron. Repetitive severe droughts had a negative effect on survival of the two woody species (Q. coccifera, C. albidus), but not of the grass B. retusum. Interspecific competition generally increased survival of C. albidus and B. retusum compared to monospecific competition. Conversely, interspecific competition decreased the survival of Q. coccifera. Likewise, I found that root morphological traits were mostly affected by the neighbor species identity rather than by severe drought. The community level physiological profiles (CLPPs) of root associated soil microbial communities did not differ between drought treatments and were also not affected by plant species identity. However, CLPPs changed towards more total microbial activities but less diverse resource use at increasing soil depth. Collectively these results suggest that plant species composition of the studied Mediterranean shrubland has a stronger effect on growth, intraspecific variability in root traits and survival than repetitive severe droughts.In the context of a larger collaborative project (CLIMED), I used a natural gradient of shrub species diversity in a Mediterranean shrubland ecosystem (garrigue) to which a permanent partial rain exclusion treatment (12% less precipitation) was added. This field experiment allowed me to study the responses of soil microbial community level physiological profiles (CLPPs) to reduced precipitation and to a change plant-produced leaf litter material decomposing on the ground as a key resource for heterotrophic soil microorganisms over two years. While rain exclusion had only a minor impact on the diversity of substrates metabolized by the microbial communities, litter species richness promoted global soil microbial activity by increased catabolic diversity of the soil microbial community. These results suggest that indirect climate change effects on plant species composition and richness might have more important consequences for soil microbial functioning than reduced precipitation in the studied Mediterranean shrubland ecosystem.Both, the field study of soil microbial functioning and the rhizotron study of plant growth and survival clearly showed that plant species identity and diversity may be more important for the functioning of these Mediterranean shrublands than increased drought. I conclude that climate change induced shifts in plant species composition and diversity may have more important consequences for the functioning of Mediterranean shrublands than the direct effects of altered precipitation

Full textThe Mediterranean Sea is home to a significant marine biodiversity with a high rate of endemism. The fish population is composed of 684 species, of which 9.2% are endemic. Beyond the fundamental role played by fish populations within marine ecosystems, they also provide human societies with many ecosystem services. However, biodiversity and the functioning of coastal ecosystems, are deeply and increasingly affected by anthropogenic pressures. In contrast with the complex dynamics of global change at a larger scale, local anthropogenic pressures can be identified and managed more easily at the regional scale. To do this, the quantification and evaluation of the consequences of these pressures are necessary, especially regarding the fish community. In this study, we assessed the impacts of four anthropogenic pressures common to the Mediterranean coasts on the ichthyological community present in the Bay of Calvi in Corsica (France). The anthropogenic pressures included effluents from the outfall of the Calvi wastewater treatment plant, an aquaculture farm, recreational fishing activities and scuba diving. The results were discussed in the context of global change and particularly of climate change, which will induce a major evolution of Mediterranean ecosystems in the upcoming decades. This thesis shows the significant progress made in our ability to understand, prioritise and anticipate the impacts of local anthropogenic pressures on Mediterranean coastal fish populations. It further provides management recommendations that will need to be adapted to the human-environment dynamics in the context of global change

Full textThe Euro-Mediterranean area has been identified as a hot-spot for climate change with higher probability of occurrence of extreme events conducive to floods and droughts. However, models tend to simulate too often light precipitation and to underestimate heavy precipitation, making them unreliable for the estimation of future extreme events over this region. The motivation of this PhD project is to better understand and model the processes leading to these extremes, by considering their spatial variability linked to very diverse conditions, and to better estimate the answer of these processes to climate change. I first analyze the triggering of precipitation based on the relationship between precipitation, IWV and tropospheric temperature from different ensembles of the regional climate simulations over Europe from 0.44° to convective-permitting (CP) resolution to assess the impact of resolution and convection parameterization in representing precipitation triggering. Then I used a small ensemble of simulations with the parameterization of deep convection switched off at a coarser resolution than the CP ensemble, this aims to disentangle the impact of higher resolution and explicit convection in CP simulations. Finally, I investigated the evolution of precipitation triggering processes in a warming climate using an ensemble of CP simulations. The results show that CP ensemble presents a lower occurrence of weak precipitation and more intense extreme events. To explain this tendency, I determine the critical value of water vapor (IWVcv) over which the precipitation occurrence picks up for different bins of temperature and I compare the values obtained for the different ensembles. I show that lower frequency of precipitation in CP simulations can be explained by higher IWVcv and lower probability to exceed IWVcv over the areas with vigorous convection. The explicit convection plays a more important role in simulating precipitation frequency, while the impact of higher resolution varies with different models. In addition, over the high mountain, model resolution has a larger impact in simulating IWVcv because dynamical processes linked to orography play an important role in triggering convection. Over the plains, higher resolution has a larger impact at low temperature bins but at high temperature, the impact of deep explicit convection is greater. Over the sea, IWVcv is not impacted by model resolution because precipitation triggering depends on large scale convergence over there. In a warming climate, the distribution of IWVcv is expected to shift towards higher temperature and water vapor, this leads to a less often but stronger convection in the future projections

Full textThe rising population, overcrowded housing, the pressure of urban and economic development and the warming climate are all factors that create the necessity of better land use planning in the communities of Nunavik, Canada. In this context, the link between land use planning and permafrost knowledge is strong. A better understanding of the permafrost conditions supports better decision making and therefore promotes a better adaptation of the communities facing the challenge of climate change and better planning of village growth due to more housing development. The study of the foundation types on permafrost terrain in the community of Inukjuak shows the necessity of the technical integration of the permafrost in the land use planning process in the community.
