Abstract:
This chapter discusses the Ba’thist regime’s use of religion during the Gulf Crisis in 1990 and the Gulf War in 1991. In 1990, Saddam invaded Kuwait and then Saddam again raised eyebrows in 1991 by delivering what became known as his first and second “jihad speeches,” which highlighted long-held Ba’thist ideas about Islam. Saddam was able to integrate the regime’s political instrumentalization of religion into its broader strategies for the war. Those ideas were then echoed throughout Iraq’s religious landscape and in its official and unofficial propaganda during the war. As this chapter shows, the increase in regime’s propagation of religious propaganda during the conflict reflected an increase in its institutional capacity to organize and present its views on religion rather than a shift in ideology away from Ba’thism toward Political Islam.

Any discussion of the pathomechanisms and treatments of MS benefits from an understanding of the physiology of the neuronal membrane and the action potential. Neurons and glia, are important for signal propagation, synaptic function, and neural development. The neuronal cell membrane, maintains different ionic environments inside and outside the cell, separating charge across the membrane and facilitating electrical excitability. Ion channels allow flow of sodium, potassium, and calcium ions across the membrane at selected times. At rest, potassium ion efflux across the membrane establishes the nerve membrane resting potential. When activated by a voltage change to threshold, sodium influx generates an action potential, or a sudden alteration in membrane potentials, that can be conducted along an axon. The myelin sheaths around an axon, increase the speed of conduction and conserve energy. The pathology of MS disrupts the myelin structures, disturbs conduction, and leads to neurodegeneration. Ion channels have been the target of investigation for both restoration of conduction and neuroprotection.

‘Genes in evolution’ illustrates that a great deal of change in the primary sequence of DNA was not adaptive at all. It was not natural selection, but ‘neutral evolution’, consisting of an accumulation of mutations of no selective consequence that spread through the population by the effects of random sampling of variants from one generation to the next. In natural selection, generally what is good for the organism is good for the propagation of the gene variants it carries. But sometimes, as for sex and altruism, maximizing inheritance of gene variants that bring them about seems at first sight to be of advantage to the group, but of disadvantage for the individual.

Abstract:
Acariasis in humans and animals is caused by a diversity of parasitic mites taxonomically grouped into the class Arachnida, subclass Acari. The zoonotic species that can transfer from birds and animals to man (e.g. Cheyletiella spp; Dermanyssus spp and Ornithonyssus spp) are important in that they often cause major skin irritation or a hypersensitivity reactions or alternatively act as vectors of diseases such as scrub typhus. Like ticks the lifecycle of mites involves four life stages of development. The female mite lays eggs on the host or in the environment; the eggs hatch into larvae and pass through two nymphal stages. All stages have eight legs except the six-legged larva. Transmission is predominantly via direct contact between hosts; however fomites have been recognised as a potential source of infestation although the importance of this is variable and dependent on the ability of the mite to survive in the environment. The geographic range of most zoonotic species is worldwide although some varieties may be rare or non-existent in some countries. No developmental change or propagation of the organism occurs during the transmission.

Viruses, the simplest organisms, obligate parasites that encode structural proteins and replicative functions requiring the cellular machinery of the host to ensure their propagation. Viruses are masters of evolution. An analysis of infectious diseases emerging since the 1980s revealed that most were caused by viruses, especially those with RNA genomes. New viral emergences are generally the result of intrinsic changes in the genetics of the virus to increase transmission, virulence or host range, and environmental or ecological changes that favor contacts between viruses and humans or other hosts. We describe the molecular mechanisms of viruses that ensure their rapid adaptation and evolution. We describe instances where viral evolution appears partially responsible for recent outbreaks and discuss the challenges in identifying the cause or consequence of viral evolution in the context of resource-rich versus -limited countries.

Preeclampsia (PE) is a multi-organ system disorder defined as hypertension with blood pressures greater than 140/90 on two occasions and proteinuria of more than 300 mg/24 hours. Eclampsia is defined as when seizures occur in a woman with preeclampsia. The pathophysiology of preeclampsia/eclampsia is felt to be related to incomplete penetration of the cytotrophoblasts of the placenta into the myometrium, leading to local ischemia, propagation of ischemic factors causing hypertension, resulting in endothelial dysfunction. The clinical features are related to which end organ is involved: in the kidney, proteinuria; in the liver, coagulopathy; and in the brain, posterior white matter dysfunction. The involvement of the parietal and occipital lobes explains the associated neurological features of confusion and visual changes. MRI reflects the white matter changes associated with eclampsia in posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES). Eclampsia is treated with blood pressure control and magnesium to treat the seizures.

Some exceptional situations in fluid mechanics can be modeled by equations that are analytically solvable. The most famous example is the Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) equation for shallow water waves in a channel. The exact soliton solution of this equation is derived. The Lax pair formalism for solving the general initial value problem is outlined. Two hamiltonian formalisms for the KdV equation (Fadeev–Zakharov and Magri) are explained. Then a short review of the geometry of curves (Frenet–Serret equations) is given. They are used to derive a remarkably simple equation for the propagation of a kink along a vortex filament. This equation of Hasimoto has surprising connections to the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and to the Heisenberg model of ferromagnetism. An exact soliton solution is found.

Brain and spinal cord injury are leading causes of death and long-term disability, producing diverse burdens for the affected individuals, their families, and society. Such injuries, including traumatic brain injury, stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and spinal cord injury, have common patterns of neuronal cell vulnerability that are associated with a complex cascade of pathologic processes that trigger the propagation of tissue damage beyond the acute injury. Secondary injury mechanisms, including oxidative stress, edema formation, changes in cerebral blood flow and vessel reactivity, metabolic and blood–brain barrier disruption, and neuroinflammation, are therefore important therapeutic targets. Several key physiological parameters require monitoring and intensive management during various phases of treatment to ameliorate secondary injury mechanisms and potentially protect against further neuronal injury. This chapter reviews the core physiological targets in the management of brain and spinal cord injury and relates them to secondary injury mechanisms and outcomes.

The chapter illustrates the influence of lateral boundaries, bottom topography, outcroppings, equatorial tangent plane approximation, and cylindrical channel geometry in laboratory experiments on the wave spectrum, and characteristics of waves in rotating shallow-water model. It is shown that all these effects lead to appearance of wave-guide modes, localised in one spatial direction, and freely propagating in another one. These modes are coastal and equatorial Kelvin waves, topographic and equatorial Rossby waves, shelf and edge waves, equatorial Yanai and inertia–gravity waves, and frontal waves. Their dispersion and polarisation relations are established, and their properties explained. Mountain (lee) waves are also treated.

Around 1910 the meaning of intellectual disability shifted from feeblemindedness as a burden to a menace. Thus, the simple idiot of the 1850s and burdensome feebleminded of the late 19th century became the menacing moron of the 1910s, 1920s, and beyond. Two matters affected this change: eugenics and the intelligence test. As such, heredity and intelligence embodied in the “pedigree studies” of the period linked with all kinds of social problems. The petty criminal was a wrongdoer, the prostitute prostituted, and the hobo wandered because they were feebleminded. And they were feebleminded because of their low intelligence and fecundity that they were passing along generation after generation. The principal offenders were “morons,” a new category of feeble minds. These morons looked normal, but they were polluted and propagating. Two methods evolved to “treat” the problem of the menace: institutional segregation and sterilization. Both facilitated eugenics.

This chapter explores electromagnetic-matter interactions from photon to extinction length scales, i.e., nanometer of X-ray and above. Starting with Casimir-Polder effect to understand interactions of metals and dielectrics at near-atomic distance scale, it stretches to larger wavelengths to explore optomechanics and its ability for energy exchange and signal transduction between PHz and GHz. This range is explored with near-quantum sensitivity limits. The chapter also develops the understanding phononic bandgaps, and for photons, it explores the use of energetic coupling for useful devices such as optical tweezers, confocal microscopes and atomic clocks. It also explores miniature accelerators as a frontier area in accelerator physics. Plasmonics—the electromagnetic interaction with electron charge cloud—is explored for propagating and confined conditions together with the approaches’ possible uses. Optoelectronic energy conversion is analyzed in organic and inorganic systems, with their underlying interaction physics through solar cells and its thermodynamic limit, and quantum cascade lasers.
