Abstract:
This chapter examines political participation as a unique capacity possessed by humans that “fundamentally shapes a human being.” It argues that without political participation, we would lose much of our identity as “political actors” who seek to influence and change the world they live in. The chapter first explains what political participation is and why some people participate in collective political action while others do not. It then considers a range of individual factors that motivate political participation, such as ideology, identity, emotion, and instrumentality, and the role of social-level factors including social networks. It also describes a social identity model of collective action (SIMCA), which suggests that affective injustice (e.g., group-based anger), perceived group efficacy, and politicized collective identity predict engagement in collective action. The chapter concludes by discussing moral obligation as a motive for participating in political collective action.

Martin, Jeffrey J. Theory of Planned Behavior and Stages of Change Models. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190638054.003.0035.

Full text
Abstract:
The theory of planned behavior (TPB) and stages of change (SOC) models have been used to predict physical activity (PA) in people with disabilities. The purpose of this chapter is to give an overview of the TPB and SOC models and the research findings stemming from testing them in people with impairments. The health action process approach (HAPA), designed with individuals with disabilities, is also introduced, along with suggested future research using the HAPA. The HAPA is in many ways a meta-theory, as it incorporates many constructs from theories discussed here and in other chapters. For instance, various forms of self-efficacy, outcome expectations, coping, planning, and social support are all included in the HAPA. In addition, the HAPA includes a three-stage model in which people are labeled as pre-intenders, intenders, or actors. Researchers intending to use the SOC theories and the TPB should know that they have come under criticism, and these criticisms are addressed in the chapter.

Lindenmayer, David, Philip Barton, and Jennifer Pierson, eds. Indicators and Surrogates of Biodiversity and Environmental Change. CSIRO Publishing, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9781486304103.

Full text
Abstract:
Ecological indicators and surrogates are used widely by resource managers to monitor and understand complex biota and ecosystem processes. Their potential to guide complex resource management has meant they have been proposed for use in all ecosystems worldwide. Despite extensive research into indicators and surrogates, there remains much controversy about their use, in addition to major issues and knowledge gaps associated with their identification, testing and application. Indicators and Surrogates of Biodiversity and Environmental Change provides insights into the use of indicators and surrogates in natural resource management and conservation – where to use them, where not to use them, and how to use them. Using an ecological approach, the chapters explore the development, application and efficacy of indicators and surrogates in terrestrial, aquatic, marine and atmospheric environments. The authors identify current gaps in knowledge and articulate the future directions for research needed to close those gaps. This book is written by the world’s leading thinkers in the area of indicators and surrogates. It is the first major synthesis of learnings about indicators and surrogates and will be a critical resource for the vast number of people developing and applying them in ecosystems around the world. It will be an essential resource for scientists, policy makers and students with interests in surrogates and indicators.

Abstract:
This book is a study of the historical development and impact of John Calvin’s doctrine of baptismal efficacy. The primary questions it addresses are (1) whether Calvin taught an “instrumental” doctrine of baptism, according to which the external sign of the sacrament serves as a means or instrument to convey the spiritual realities it signifies, and (2) whether Calvin’s teaching on baptismal efficacy remained constant throughout his lifetime or underwent significant change. Secondarily, the work also examines whether such spiritual blessings, in Calvin’s view, are conferred only in adult (believer) baptism or also in the baptism of infants, and what impact Calvin’s doctrine of baptismal efficacy had on the Reformed confessional tradition that followed him. The book examines all of Calvin’s writings on baptism—his Institutes, commentaries on Scripture, catechisms, polemical writings, and consensus documents—chronologically through five stages of his life and then analyzes the doctrine of baptismal efficacy in eight of the major Reformed confessions and catechisms from the age of confessional codification. It concludes that Calvin did indeed hold to an instrumental view of baptism; that this doctrine underwent change and development over the course of his life but not to the extent that some in the past have suggested; that his view of the efficacy of infant baptism was consistent with his doctrine of baptism in general; and that versions of Calvin’s teaching can be found in many, though not all, of the major Reformed confessional documents of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Full text
Abstract:
In Chapter 8, “Motivational Interviewing: Evidence-Based Practice,” the research on the efficacy of motivational interviewing (MI) for achieving behavioral change in older adults is summarized and evaluated. Only meta-analyses and randomized controlled trails (RCTs) were included in the review. Fifteen RCTs were found that investigated the use of MI for enhancing behavioral change in older adults related to substance abuse/misuse, exercise, diet, and smoking. Beginning research on the use of MI with older clients suggests its efficacy for promoting behavioral change in this population. Results of randomized control trials reveal that MI is as effective as, or more effective than, other psychosocial interventions in fostering healthier behavior and improved mood. The studies discussed in this review were conducted in differing formats—face-to-face, telephone, and a combination of the two. The success of the telephone-based format, as well as the face-to-face approach, reveals the utility of MI interventions with homebound elders.

Stephenson, Barry. 4. Ritual and transformation. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/actrade/9780199943524.003.0005.

Abstract:
There are many rites that traffic in symbols and processes of transformation: healing rites, funerary rites, magic, sacrifice, rites of inversion, and rites of passage. Ritual theorists approach ritual as not merely decorous or expressive, but of real consequence and practical efficacy. If ritual is efficacious, just how does it accomplish its work? Is ritual really capable of effecting transformation? ‘Ritual and transformation’ explores these questions by focussing on two categories of ritual commonly associated with change and transformation—initiation and magic. It also considers ritual criticism as developed by Ronald Grimes and others to qualitatively measure and ethically evaluate the kinds of changes taking place in and through ritual.

Abstract:
Huntington’s disease (HD) causes a combination of motor, cognitive, and psychiatric changes; of these, the behavioral and cognitive aspects cause the greatest disability and have the highest impact on quality of life. The most common and troublesome behavioral problems are depression, suicidal thinking, irritability, apathy, and perseveration. Apathy and perseveration become more common as the disease progresses and correlate with other markers of disease progression, including cognitive impairment, whereas mood changes do not. The most prominent cognitive changes are psychomotor slowing and problems in executive skills and memory. Emotional processing and odor recognition difficulties also occur early. Simple psychomotor measures provide sensitive markers of change, even in premanifest HD, and therefore are crucial in evaluating efficacy of therapeutic interventions. The causes of problem behaviors in HD are complex and reflect an interaction of biologic, social, and environmental factors.

Abstract:
This chapter describes strategies for designing programme evaluation for communication skills training courses. It draws on the communication literature to demonstrate evaluation approaches including use of control groups, validated instruments, and observation methods. The logic model is introduced as a tool to ensure that evaluation is aligned with programme plans. Kirkpatrick’s four levels of programme evaluation are used to analyse training outcomes. Kirkpatrick’s Level 1 evaluates learners’ reaction to training. Level 2 evaluates changes in the learners’ attitudes, such as self-efficacy, knowledge and skills, including assessment by standardized patients. Level 3 assesses change in communication behaviours in the context of patient care, and Level 4 measures changes in patient outcomes, including patient satisfaction. Examples of each Kirkpatrick level are provided in this chapter, along with their strengths and limitations.

Abstract:
Psychotherapy is often the treatment of choice for perinatal women who wish to limit their fetus’s or infant’s medication exposure. The vast majority of empirical research that has examined psychotherapy for perinatal women has focused on depression. Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) have been examined in several studies to determine their efficacy in perinatal depression and anxiety. Recent research has begun to examine the manner in which psychotherapies can be delivered in alternative formats (e.g., teletherapy) in order to overcome problems with treatment retention and compliance. Suggestions for future research include large-scale randomized controlled trials that compare two active approaches to psychotherapy, mediation studies to uncover the mechanisms of change associated with the successful treatment of perinatal women, and randomized controlled trials evaluating the efficacy of psychotherapy for mental health disorders other than depression.

Abstract:
Adult brains maintain the ability to reorganize throughout life. Cortical reorganization or plasticity includes modification of synaptic efficacy as well as neuronal networks that carry behavioural implications. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) allows for the study of primary motor cortex reorganization in humans. Motor-evoked potential (MEP) amplitudes change in response to practice. This article gives information about the effect of practice on TMS measures such as motor-evoked potential amplitudes, motor maps, paired-pulse measures, and behavioural measures. These changes may be accompanied by down-regulation of activity in nearby body part representations within the same hemisphere and in homonymous regions of the opposite hemisphere, mediated by interhemispheric interactions. There is evidence pointing towards the influence of practice on a distributed network of cortical representations within regions of cerebral hemispheres. This has lead to the formulation of intervention strategies to enhance the training effects by cortical or somatosensory stimulation in health and disease.

Abstract:
Becoming pregnant and giving birth can lead to considerable psychological, behavioral, and cognitive transformation. The nature and scope of change varies a great deal from woman to woman. This chapter summarizes qualitative and quantitative research on normal psychological adaptation to pregnancy, including recognition and acceptance of the pregnant state, experience of the boundary between self and fetus, and body image changes. It reviews research on internal representations of the fetus and fetal and neonatal attachment. Perinatal changes in stress reactivity and coping style are reviewed. The chapter explains the influence of women’s prenatal expectations about labor and delivery on subsequent experiences and reactions and describes normative postpartum mood reactivity. Perinatal effects on sleep, physical activity, sexual activity, and eating patterns are described. Controversies about the effects of pregnancy on cognition are examined. The chapter also covers topics related to the transition to motherhood, including influences on maternal self-esteem and self-efficacy.

Abstract:
This chapter evaluates the efficacy of modern cyber strategies and how states coerce rivals in the digital domain. It argues that these campaigns are neither as revolutionary nor as novel as they seem. It finds that cyber disruptions, short-term and long-term espionage, and degradation operations all usually fail to produce concessions. When states do compel a rival, which is measured as a change in behavior in the target that is strategically advantageous to the initiator, the cyber operation tends to occur alongside more traditional coercive instruments such as diplomatic pressure, economic sanctions, and military threats and displays. Cyber capabilities complement, but do not replace traditional statecraft. Theoretical and empirical investigation of cyber strategies and their efficacy should therefore precede development of suggestions for sound foreign policy responses to state-backed cyber intrusions or craft international frameworks that constrain the proliferation of politically motivated malware. This book is a critical first step.

Abstract:
Health care in the United States is in transition. Facilitating individual patient and population-based lifestyle change is critical for creating a healthier country. Fostering prevention, promoting lifestyle change, and dealing with the high incidence and prevalence of chronic disease is within the purview of health coaching, a new health discipline. This chapter describes the emergence, theories and methodologies, and efficacy of health coaching. We describe health coaching in practice, as primary care and integrated care environments begin to incorporate health coaching within multidisciplinary health care teams. Five major coaching approaches are discussed: the transtheoretical model (stages of change), motivational interviewing, solution-focused coaching, cognitive-behavioral coaching, and mindfulness-based stress reduction. An example of a brief coaching session is presented.

Full text
Abstract:
Ageing and personality interact. Whilst experiences that may be associated with age, including changes in roles and social networks, losses and health challenges, may require adaptation of aspects of personality, personality across the life-span fundamentally influences how ageing is experienced. There are indications that extraversion, conscientiousness and openness show reduced levels in later life, but people’s rank order on personality traits remains stable. Development continues into later life, but builds on earlier experiences and ways of coping. Personality resources such as self-esteem, perceived control, self-efficacy and resilience shape the person’s response to adversity in later life, enabling older people to maintain high levels of well-being, despite the challenges. Dementia, the ultimate challenge, is accompanied by personality change, with raised neuroticism and lowered conscientiousness both predicting its onset and accompanying its course. Pre-morbid personality does also appear to have some influence on behavioural problems experienced.

Abstract:
This chapter describes a collaborative project that studied the applications of Lucy Green’s informal music learning curriculum within the context of high school choral ensembles. For a 12-week period, the conductors of four high school choirs charged students in small groups to copy a Christmas carol of their choice from a recording or to create a new arrangement inspired by the recording without intervention from their conductor. They would perform those carols at a public concert during the December holiday season. The overarching research question addressed the efficacy of informal learning as choral pedagogy to nurture the students’ musicianship in choir. Data consisted of interviews, video recordings, and reflective journals. Results showed a positive impact on group cooperation, peer-directed learning, choral rehearsal strategy, leadership, and personal musical identity. It also served as a catalyst to change perceptions of students and teachers relative to musical skill and ability.

Full text
Abstract:
Ever since a democratic system of government was adopted and a strategy of planned economic development was launched in India, the planners were quite conscious of the need for an administrative system different from the colonial one to implement the planned objective of development. Kuldeep Mathur, in this volume, examines these administrative reforms and provides a magisterial account of the changes in the institutional process of public administration. The introduction of neoliberal policies revived the concerns about reform and change, thereby giving rise to a new vocabulary in the discourse of public administration. The conventional world of public administration was now expected to adopt management practices of the private sector and interact with it to achieve public policy goals. New institutions are now being layered on traditional ones, and India is becoming a recipient of managerial ideas whose efficacy has yet to be tested on Indian soil. In light of the aforementioned changes, this volume argues that hybrid architecture for delivering public goods and services has been the most significant transformation to be institutionalized in the current era and critiques the neoliberal transformation from within a mainstream public administration perspective.

Abstract:
The practice of integrative and preventive medicine plays a critical role in improving the health and well-being of people, families, and communities. This chapter covers several key steps to optimize the effective practice of integrative and preventive medicine, including the importance the clinician–patient partnership; prioritizing pain, stress, and emotional distress; and clearly communicating the reasoning behind recommendations. The successful clinician should be able to engage with patients as partners through their health journey, make appropriate referrals to other members of the integrative medicine team, encourage self-efficacy and health behavior change, ensure patient understanding, and schedule periodic follow-up and reassessment.
