Abstract:
Euryale ferox Salisb. is commercially very important plant as it possesses spiritual significance, potent medicinal properties and enhances socio-economical condition of the locality. In India, this plant is grown annually at large scale in 9 districts of North Bihar namely Madhubani, Darbhanga, Katihar, Sitamarhi, Purnea, Kishanganj, Araria, Saharsa and Supaul. However, its cultivation was started in 1998 in neighbouring district Maldah specifically in Harishchandrapur - II Block of Tal area by bringing seeds from Darbangha, Bihar on experimental basis with assistance of the State Government of West Bengal. By 2001, it spread from Harishchandrapur - II Block to Harishchandrapur - I Block followed by Chanchal - II Block in Tal area to Gajol Block in Barind area and to Diara area by 2012. The exponential spread of plant and adoption of cultivation practice in Maldah district has altered the actual agricultural practice of the district and creating ecological imbalances in water bodies resulted in loss of aquatic biodiversity and may lead to health hazard of the associated personnel though the popped makhana is on high pricing and demand. Thus, this article deals with different kinds of impacts and mitigation measures for restoration of water bodies, aquatic biodiversity and welfare of associated manpower for their better livelihood.

Abstract:
It’s no exaggeration to say that floods are among the most common and catastrophic natural disasters, with widespread impacts on ecosystems and human lives. The World Bank has concluded that India is one of the most flood-prone countries in the world. This research has been focused on identification of real-time flood hazard area in the Malda district (India) using SAR data, Sentinel-1A (C-band). ArcGIS, Erdas-Imagine, and SNAP were used for this analysis. These inundation layers were intersected with the Malda district village’s database to determine the full extent of the devastation caused by the floods and finally determined the real-time flood-impacted area (380.19 km² on 4th September and 338.87 km² on 10th September, 2019). It was noted that on 4th September, 766 and 10th September 765 villages were seriously devastated owing to water. Moreover, among the 15 blocks of this district, Harischandrapur-II (75.67%), Manikchak (68.60%) and Kaliachak-III (68.00%) have experienced the most flooding. Finally, in order to estimate the overall population, households and affected by the floods, stratified random sampling was carried out in the flood-impacted villages of the Malda district. The safest blocks are Chanchal-I, Gazole, Harischandrapur-I and Kaliachak-I and the highly vulnerable blocks are Harischandrapur-II, Kaliachak-III and Manikchak. According to the flood influences on children, the most vulnerable blocks are Malda Old, English Bazar, Kaliyachak-III, and Harishchandrapur-II.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract This work aims to decipher p73-regulated biomarkers for a prompt diagnosis of colorectal cancer (CRC) by employing a combination of integrative bioinformatics and expression profiling technologies. Transcriptome profile of HCT116 cell line p53−/− p73+/+ and p53−/− p73 knockdown was performed to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) followed by cross-checking with three CRC tissue expression datasets available in Gene Expression Omnibus. KEGG and Gene ontology were performed on differentially expressed transcripts obtained via the transcriptome profile and intersected genes. The PPI network was constructed via Cytoscape to extract hub genes. KM plots assisted in investigating the prognostic significance of the hub genes. The clinicopathological relevance was explored using the GEPIA and UALCAN databases. Finally, machine/deep learning algorithms were employed to perform TNM-stage classification. Transcriptome profiling revealed 1,289 upregulated and 1,897 downregulated genes. When intersected with employed CRC datasets, 284 DEGs were obtained. The analysis of gene ontology and KEGG showed enrichment of the DEGs in metabolic process, fatty acid biosynthesis, etc. The PPI network constructed using these 284 genes assisted in identifying 20 hub genes. Kaplan Meier, GEPIA, and UALCAN analyses uncovered the prognostic and diagnostic relevance of these hub genes. Conclusively, the deep learning model achieved TNM-stage classification accuracy of 0.78 and 0.75 using 284 DEGs and 20 hub genes, respectively. This is a novel study utilizing transcriptomics, publicly available tissue datasets, and machine learning to unveil key CRC-relevant genes. These genes are found relevant regarding the patients’ prognosis and diagnosis. The unveiled biomarkers are also found robust in TNM-stage prediction. This is the first study where transcriptomics, publicly available tissue datasets, and machine learning are altogether employed to reveal key genes in CRC pathogenesis. Our research highlights the robust analysis of four independent data sets to find the key hub genes, further predicting the performance of the key genes in stage-wise classification. Abstract:
I evaluated the importance of wild mammals’ meat in the diet of villagers of the Osa Peninsula, near to Corcovado National Park. I visited 16 towns and the Guaymí Indian Reserve. I interviewed 55 % of the families of the area. Among all the consumed meats, the wild meat takes a fifth place. The agouti Agouti paca is the wild mammal more consumed, followed by the white-lipped Tayassu pecari and the collared peccary T. tajacu (H=128, p<0.01). The agouti is consumed on average three 3 times per year per family and the white-lipped peccary once every year (U = 128.5, p< 0.01). The consumption of white-lipped peccaries is significantly higher in communities closer to the park, while the consumption of collared peccaries is higher in communities distant to the park. The hunt of white-lipped peccaries occurs twice in the year, while agoutis and collared peccaries are hunted throughout the year. The wild meat is not the main source of protein in this region. People are very selective to consume wild meat. The consumption of wild meat is rather related to flavor that to economic need. The amount of white-lipped peccaries hunted by the peninsula residents is low. However, white-lipped peccaries that are actually hunted came from the Park, thus, the whole population is vulnerable. The control of hunting should increase in the closer towns to the park and specially at the end of the wet season (from October to December).Palabras clave: Cacería, carne de monte, Costa Rica, mamíferos, Península de Osa, subsistencia, Tayassu pecari.

Abstract:
Abstract INTRODUCTION: The p53 tumor suppressor family is classically activated after DNA damage and plays a central role in cell fate decisions. Although, the p53 family activates many of the same genes in response to DNA damage, p73 plays distinct biological functions in development and metastasis. It is likely that p73 activates a unique transcriptional network which is critical for its anti-metastatic and anti-invasive action. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are a class of mRNA-like transcripts longer than 200 nucleotides. They lack protein-coding ability and are believed to be involved in various kinds of biological processes. Increasing evidence suggests that lncRNA are frequently aberrantly expressed in cancers. Therefore, the roles of dysregulated functional lncRNA in human malignant tumors have attracted considerable scientific interest. The objective of our study is to find out novel long non-coding RNAs that can act as transcriptional targets of p73 and to delineate their role in p73-mediated anti-metastatic response. METHODS: For this purpose, we performed transcriptome sequencing in HCT116p73wt and HCT116p73KD cells and screened the data for modulation of expression of lncRNAs in differential manner. Quantitative Real Time PCR was further carried out to validate the data obtained after screening RNA seq Data. Promoter analysis was carried out for the identification of p73 binding sites in the selected upregulated or downregulated lncRNAs which was further confirmed by Luciferase reporter, ChIP and site directed mutagenesis assays. RESULTS: About six lncRNAs were observed to be significantly upregulated while four were down-regulated upon knockdown of p73. The promoters of selected lncRNAs were analysed in silico using TF Bind and JASPAR software for p73 binding sites and luciferase reporter assays suggested regulation of lncRNAs by p73. Chromatin immunoprecipitation showed promoter enrichment of the selected lncRNAs. Site directed mutagenesis further confirmed the exact binding sites of p73 onto the promoters of these novel long non coding RNAs. CONCLUSION: Together, our study provides insights into the differential regulation of long non-coding RNAs in p73 dependent manner which further will provide the mechanism of their action at the genome level. Abstract:
Two significant spaces define the soundscape of worship in a church: chancel and nave. The chancel is a space with the primary function of a sound source, where the preachers and choir are often seated during church services. Church design and layout have changed throughout history based on the functional needs of its target congregation. Some modern churches have omitted the chancel to fit contemporary design aesthetics. The main aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between the chancel and the acoustics performance of a church. Four churches with varying geometries of circular, polygonal, and rectangular chancels were selected for this study. Two simulations of varying chancel characteristics of chancel availability and chancel geometry were conducted. The recorded speech intelligibility index (STI) and reverberation time (RT) results indicate that chancel availability and geometry significantly affect churches’ acoustic performance. The simulation of the chancel availability mainly affected speech intelligibility, where the models with chancels recorded a higher STI than the models without chancels. In terms of chancel geometry, the results of the STI of the circular chancels were more encouraging than the polygonal and rectangular chancels.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The present study was undertaken to assess the impacts of rice-prawn gher (RPG) system on farm productivity, food security and poverty reduction in Bangladesh. In this study, farm survey data, extracted from a comprehensive questionnaire from two study villages viz. Bilpabla (RPG farming) and Chanchra (year-round modern variety–YRMV) located in Khulna and Jessore district, respectively were analyzed deliberately. This study consists of a random selection of ninety farmers from Bilpabla Village and one-hundred farmers from Chanchra. The study indicates that RPG farming system has significant impacts on farm productivity. On an average, yield of modern variety (MV) was reasonably higher in RPG farming system than that of YRMV farming system. In addition, the households engaged in RPG farming system (Bilpabla Village) have simultaneously generated more household income and per capita income (more than twice), relative to YRMV farming system (Chanchra Village). Moreover, the households of Bilpabla are superior to those households residing in Chanchra in terms of physical, social and economic access (purchasing power) which permits them to acquire and consume well-balanced food as well as sufficient calorie intake. Therefore, the RPG farming system had significant impacts on food security and poverty reduction. The Agriculturists 2014; 12(2) 126-136

Abstract:
Chancel liability is an ancient property right, enforced by a Parochial Church Council, attaching to certain former rectorial lands. It requires a landowner to bear the cost of repair of the parish church chancel. The right poses particular problems for a purchaser, not least because it is hard to discover and is not limited to the value of the land. A recent decision of the Court of Appeal has found that a Parochial Church Council falls within section 6 of the Human Rights Act 1998 as a public authority, and that chancel liability infringes article 1 of the First Protocol of the European Convention on Human Rights. This paper will dispute the rationale used by the Court of Appeal, and in so doing will argue that whilst chancel liability is outmoded, widely regarded as incongruous and does not bear scrutiny in its modern context, it should nevertheless be removed on a principled basis, avoiding unwanted repercussions elsewhere in the law.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Cinema. Abstract:
This research investigated the geochemical characteristics, contamination indices and ecological risk assessment of stream sediments from Chanchaga area of Minna Metropolis, North-Central Nigeria. Eight samples were collected from River Chanchaga and its tributaries and sieved to less than 2 mm grain size following air drying for 48 hours. The samples were subsequently analysed for the concentration of major and trace elements using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry. Contamination indices (enrichment ratio, enrichment factor and index of geoaccumulation) and potential ecological risk index (PERI) were used for assessing the level of risk that exists with respect to potentially toxic elements (PTEs). The research has found significant enrichment of Pb and Cu in stream sediments of Chanchaga area, indicating possible contamination by human activities. Based on the indices of geoaccumulation, the sediments are considered to be moderately to heavily contaminated with respect to these two PTEs. Potential ecological risks exist with respect to PTEs in these sediments, with PERI values in the range of 12.88 to 167.76, averaging 58.63. Pb presented higher monomial ecological risk index, falling within the considerable risk band and contributed significantly to the PERI values, compared to that of Cu. It is therefore concluded that human activities within Chanchaga area of Minna metropolis, Nigeria have had a negative impact on stream sediment quality and there is likelihood of mobilisation of PTEs into the water column from sediments under right environmental conditions. It is recommended that the partitioning of PTEs, especially Pb and Cu in these sediments be studied in order to ascertain their ease of dissolution and eventual biogeoaccessibility.

Abstract:
River Chanchaga is the major source of drinking water in Minna, Nigeria. This river has been a medium to an increasing pollution loads from contaminated runoff from different land uses degrading aquatic ecosystem and water quality in the river. This paper investigates the threat of anthropogenic influence on river environment and aquatic ecosystem distortion of River Chanchaga, Minna, Nigeria. Field work which include interview and observation methods were used to collect data on effect of anthropogenic and eutrophication along the study area. A total of Two Hundred and Fifty (250) people accounting for 0.5% of the total population were interviewed, making it eight per each community in thirty settlements along the study area. Physical observation of deforestation around sample sites spatially distributed along River Chanchaga depicted in Figure 2 was carried out to study mining activities, farming practice, crop types, and fallow duration to generate the mean and percentages of different anthropogenic activities along the study area. The findings revealed that deforestation is links to high demand for fire wood, lumbering, irrigation farming bank-side mining for sand and gold as depicted in Plat 1 and 2. Eutrophication at the upper course of river is links to high inflow of agricultural wastes and seasonal nature of the river from site A to C evident from Table 4 and constant flow from site C to K as a result of released water from Tagwai Dam that keeps (site C, the confluence of River Chanchaga and River Numui) middle and lower courses of River Chanchaga with sustainable moving water. The result further indicated that continue increase of pollution has a direct relationship to an increasing level of human activities like deforestation, mining activities and agricultural practices along the study area. The result also shows that there is decline in fallow duration as indicated in Table 1 and increase environmental related issues such as soil erosion, water floor (depth) reduction and distortion of river morphology of the study area. It is therefore recommended that the identified anthropogenic activities that lead to pollution and eutrophication such as river-side deforestation, irrigation farming, mining and other related environmental problems should be regulated and discourages to avoid further increase of pollution and distortion of river environment of the study area.
