Full textThis qualitative research study explored the characteristics, emergence, and engagement of people who occupy the role of the family champion in family-enterprise systems. The family champion is a next-generation leader who emerges from within the ownership group of a family-enterprise system and who works to develop the ownership, governance, and relational capabilities of the family-owners to support their goals of success. This study investigated the interdependent exchanges between individual family champions, the family-ownership group, and their family-enterprise systems. Much of the existing research on leadership within family-enterprises has focused on leadership for the business entity. This study focused specifically on leadership within the family-ownership group. Ownership of an enterprise by a family has long been cited as a strategic asset. A need exists for further understanding of the role and function of leadership within the family-owners.
This study explored the characteristics, emergence, and engagement of 14 primary family champions through semi-structured qualitative interviews. An additional eight supporting interviews were conducted with another family member who was familiar with the primary interviewee to provide a complimentary perspective. The research was discovery based and designed to explore the experiences of family champions. The extensive interviews were transcribed and analyzed utilizing grounded theory principles with the assistance of NVivo 10 qualitative analysis software.
This research revealed a rich interaction between the context of family-enterprise systems, the characteristics of family champions, and systemic shift points that created the awareness of the need for leadership. The family champions worked to develop the family-ownership group through a cycle of engagement, to produce an advanced family-enterprise system. Four main themes linked to issues in family-enterprises emerged: The systemic context of family-enterprises, the process of leadership emergence, how family champions operate as catalysts for change, and governance of both family and enterprise. The family champion is a visionary catalyst who brings new energy into the family system to support and develop the family-ownership advantage. This research makes a contribution to our understanding of the vital role of leadership within family-enterprises, and has significance for individual leaders, families who own a business, and professionals who work with these systems.

Full textThis thesis deals with the champion. It aims at understandings how the greatness of the champion is built in our modern societies and its relation with justice. The study attempts to traduce identity problems which are linked to the nomination and the public recognition. The examination of cases allows to focus the investigation on the champion's way to assume his greatness on the social scene and to expose himself the public sentence. This research based on diversity of methods describes how the champion is built and attempts to show clearly the different events or tests he as to pass. However the events are not only sporting ones but also identity tests because the greatness can be for the person a moral and public tragedy. The sociological look focuses on the passage of the champion's greatness through social worlds, on the excellence cost and what he feels. It also underlines what happens and events he has to pass which needs to express the real experience of the greatness. Thus it shows how the champion can reorganize his relationship with people, reconsider his environment, the resources that he needs to remain the same through the time and the space

Full textMeetings with fifty retired male sport champions, twenty five greek and twenty five french, was the basis for this research on the construction of masculine idenitity in highlevel sport. With the help of semi-structured interviews and a projective test (t. A. T. ), we highlighted the risks and the benefits to the identities of champions practising the most popular disciplines in their respective countries. Focusing on the two sub-populations allowed us to localize the champion's status based on his cultural and historical background. In general, the champion uses his athletic career as a means of structuring his masculine identity while benefiting from physical and emotional closeness to other men. The male group, the team or the training group, creates virile attitudes that are generally linked to the champion's mothering environment which can be the coach, the institution or the champion's mother. In addition, career termination reveals the necessity of renegociating feelings of omnipotence, using rather elaborate ways (work of mourning, sublimation) over regressive ways (denial, depression). This period is characterized by identity vascillations and crises, especially for those who do not anticipate the necessity to find identifications other than those linked to the status of being a champion. Finally we propose three settings for the clinical psychologist to work with high-level athletes on the brink of career termination

Full textThe thesis seeks to analyze the literary representations of sportsmen and of heroes in a corpus of works from Plato, Homer, Virgil, Ariosto, Tasso, Montherlant, Hemingway, on the one hand to show the connection between these sportsmen and these heroes to mythological figures and on the other hand to consider the connection that “real” present-day sportsmen keep with these mythological figures too. The thesis is organized into three sections. The first section entitled “Judiciousness on the choice of the figures: hero, champion, idol” aims to define “the three emblematic figures that are the hero, the champion, the idol”, to define “the sporting ideal” and to show the connection between the sportsmen and mythological figures of heroes. The second section focuses on Orpheus and Ulysses characters, two key figures regarding their remarkable intellectual depht and influence philosophically and religiously speaking. The third part entitled “Permanency of emblematic figures of the sporting ideal” goes into the admiration and imitation process, the contribution of Roland Barthes to the study of the figures from the sport world and the study of the relationship between sporting mythology and the creation of emblematic figures. The analysis of sportsmanlike heroes in the literature and in the extra-literary universe, regarding their relationship with the great figures of mythological heroes, gives the opportunity to make the link between a literary approach and sociological questionings, cultural studies. The analyses of the sport, in particular wrestling and Tour de France by Roland Barthes in Mythologies, constitute one of the fundamental theoretical references presented in the thesis. The examination of the facts, of the events as stated in the corpus and the peripheral literary works reveal that the idea of a plain separation between the three chosen figures does not hold despite the differences at the semantic level. However to find chronological continuity links between imaginary or real characters in terms of ideal sporting behaveiour is convincing in the sense that the chosen thematic framework could be adapted to the legends, to the mythology, to the historical facts, to the contemporary events. The identification of a nation to a sport symbol reinforces the prevailing role of the idol on the peoples, of the champion on the supporters, of the hero on the citizens
Martinez, Poulin Maria. "The Impact of Networks and Mentorships to Champion Women as Superintendents in Southern California." Thesis, University of Southern California, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10257032.
Full textThe purpose of this study was to understand and analyze the degree to which southern California women superintendents utilized networks and mentorships and the impact it had in their career advancement. More specifically, this study set out to determine: 1) what barriers do women perceive hinder their access to the superintendent position, 2) what professional supports are available to women as new superintendents, 3) what networking opportunities assist women in their pursuit of the superintendency, and 4) what are the best networking methods used by women to ascend to the role of superintendent. This study utilized a mixed-method methodology. For the qualitative data, electronic surveys were distributed to 45 superintendents for a return rate of 42%. Three interviews were conducted for the quantitative perspective. Participants represented a diverse background and diverse school districts. The lens of feminist standpoint theory and social capital theory informed the analysis. Through the process of triangulation, the study’s findings indicate the participants utilized networks and mentorships to different degrees and with mixed results. An in-depth analysis of the impact networks and mentorships have on women’s career trajectory provided recommendations for networks and mentors to challenge gendered professional norms, increased access to influential people in women’s networks, and defined career pathways to the superintendency in terms of demonstrated leadership experiences over male-dominated leadership positions held. Overall, this study finds hope for women aspiring to become superintendents. Women should participate in multiple networks and develop relationships with several mentors who are willing to share the access to the superintendency.

Full textThis thesis falls under the problem of the burnourt syndrome among young competitive tennis players. It presents, as well at the theoretical level as empirical, the course of young competitive players, carrying them out the dream to become champion, with disillusion then with the burnout. The articulation of this work is carried out around a burnout modeling in sport, , clarified by the installation of three studies: the first sends back to the desire excellence of the young player by treating his representation of the champion and of his course; the second draws up a psychological and psychosocial profile of the burned out player; finally, the third is centered on the organization of the high level sport as a potential source of psychological suffering. Our conclusions highlight the multifactor aspects of burnout and propose some tracks of reflexion and prevention against this syndrome
Pavlou, Georgios. "Toxoplasma gondii, un champion de course et un redoutable envahisseur. Etude des forces motrices et invasives." Thesis, Université Grenoble Alpes, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020GRALV023.
Full textToxoplasma gondii is a cosmopolite obligate intracellular Apicomplexa parasite that infects a wide repertoire of warm-blooded animals and virtually all nucleated cells. About a third of the human population carries the persistent stage of T. gondii, and is known at risk for life-threatening toxoplasmosis in case of immune-dysfunction. The invasiveness of the T. gondii tachyzoite developmental stage is a key determinant for expansion of the parasite population and accounts for the initiation of acute tissue damages associated with the disease. The tachyzoite is a several micrometer size bow-shaped cell that displays a robust polarity and is equipped with a typical apical apparatus made of cytoskeletal arrangements and specific secretory vesicles. With these attributes, the tachyzoite contact the host cell surface with the apical side and enters within a second time-scale into a budding entry vesicle by injecting a protein complex into and beneath the facing plasma membrane. The complex, seen here as an invasive nanodevice, defines a tight zoite-cell interface that bridges both cells through a circular junction. This tight Zoite-Cell Junction (ZCJ) serves therefore as a door of entry but also as an anchor point to withstand the parasite invasive force required to actively enter the host cell. In addition, its tightness acts as a molecular sieve to select for components from the plasma membrane able to flow into the budding entry vesicle. The PhD thesis brings new insights on the forces underlying (i) the peculiar mode of locomotion called helical gliding of free tachyzoite (ii) the host cell invasion event in particular at the end of the process thereby introducing conceptual and experimental biophysics framework. The first part combines high-speed quantitative live microscopy with force microscopy and Reflection Interference Contrast Microscopy and use micropatterning. These quantitative approaches have allowed unveiling the spatiotemporal integration of a unique polar anchoring adhesion and the traction-spring-torque triad forces that set the Toxoplasma thrust force required for high-speed helical gliding. The second part of the PhD relies on the quantitative high speed live imaging and on a set of both parasite and host cell lines engineered to express fluorescent markers of interest, in particular related to the ZCJ element, together with innovative invasion assays designed to monitor in detail the poorly documented pinching off step of the budding entry vesicle. Indeed this membrane fission event promotes the birth of a bona fidae sub-cellular compartment enclosing the tachyzoite, and further remodeled to support parasite growth. These approaches have allowed identifying the peculiar rotation of the tachyzoite along the long axis which imposes a twisting motion on the parasite basal pole and directs closure of the circular invasive device therefore promoting both sealing and release of the entry vesicle. Importantly membrane fission occurs upstream the site of the nanodevice insertion and is independent of the host cell mechanoenzymes dynamins, a protein family primarily involved in pinching off of the endocytic pits and thus in endosome birth. Overall, the work supports the view that the tachyzoite has evolved a multifunction invasive nanodevice, which together with the final torque mimics the fission activity of the dynamins. Finally, monitoring distinct host cell plasma markers and their rapid reorganization upon the tachyzoite twist allowed proposing that the latter could also act as an initial mechanical trigger for the transition to the intracellular lifestyle. In conclusion, this PhD work has succeeded in implementing new biophysics-based concepts and techniques to start unraveling the biomechanics of the T. gondii tachyzoite, in particular in the context of essential behaviors including (i) the navigation on 2D and within 3D substrates and (ii) the host cell invasion process

Sports entities such as clubs, federations, NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations), and other forms of nonprofit sports organizations (NPSOs) can no longer be considered as local phenomenon to become organizations known broadly all over the world and public interest and awareness can be perceived not only in Brazilian market, as in traditional markets (such as European audience) and on emerging markets as China and India, new markets to football such as North America. However, the great disparity among clubs that belong to the called “Big Five” (English, French, German, Italian and Spanish Leagues) has potential to develop such a great distance to teams from other leagues that can have an effect on these teams capacity to invest beyond their original markets. The objective of this research is to identify the main factors for Brazilian football team internationalization by strategic networks and institutional view approaches by proposing a conceptual model which describes NPSO’s performance. Literature review reveals that ties and connections to inimitable resources, learning races and being a leader or to be in an important position in network are main factors for network formation in order to achieve internationalization. For that purpose it was adopted a qualitative exploratory research in single case study, with a Brazilian NPSO, Sport Club Corinthians Paulista – in this research called Corinthians, data was collected by in depth-interviews with fifteen key respondents. These depth-interviews were conducted with Corinthians’ management, business partners, as well as sports management journalists from major Brazilian media companies. At the end of this research it is proposed a performance model for nonprofit sports organizations, which considers the resource acquisition capacity, internal capabilities as antecedents to its performance. Main findings revealed that resource acquisition capabilities, organization`s size, brand and image reputation, in addition of institutional environmental are relevant factors for internationalization by networks. As a theoretical contribution, firms having strong brand and image reputation with resources that will strength network are an important factor for a firm entering a network or to form one. Regarding managerial perspective, a main contribution is to propose a sequence of factors for sports organizations aiming to achieve global audience.

Author of eight manuscripts illustrated with two hundred and three paintings, he used with equal quality aquarelle, gouache and grisaille techniques on paper and parchment. His manner, though characteristic of Lille area illuminators and Picardy painters, is original by his unique use of colours and lines. He was also creator of tapestry models

Full textOver the course of the last 60 years, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) rights movement in the United States has become a beacon of light around the world where LGBT persons continue to face intolerance, discrimination, persecution, and death. As this qualitative phenomenological study was being written, LGBT Americans taking advantage of their legal rights to marry, still face employment discrimination, housing discrimination, adoption discrimination, immigration discrimination, and discrimination in public accommodations including a Presidential Executive Order, state, and local legislation forcing transgender people to use the restroom that reflects their assigned gender at birth. In fact, in almost three dozen states an LGBT person could exercise their legal right to get married and still legally get fired from their job, legally get kicked out of their apartment by their landlord, and get denied an adoption simply because they are LGBT without other legal protections. Each of these issues has an effect on employee recruitment, retention, and performance and an effect in terms of creating an organizational culture where all employees can thrive without fear of retaliation, retribution, or being unaffirmed in the workplace. Affirmative corporate activism in the form of company supported LGBT employee resource groups/business resource groups, LGBT serving volunteer efforts, philanthropy, and public policy advocacy efforts combined have helped to make corporate America a critical ally in the movement for LGBT legal equality. This qualitative phenomenological study examines how LGBT employee resource group/business group leaders and executive champions influence corporate activism on LGBT issues. The rise of elected conservative leadership in the United States and around the world challenges the espoused values of corporate leaders on LGBT issues. This conservative revolution challenging the gains of the LGBT movement also creates an opportunity for corporate America to develop standards, practices, and policies. Although LGBT people outside of corporate America are likely to remain far more vulnerable to an increasingly more hostile government, corporate America has a unique opportunity to develop best practices and strategies to keep employees safe, make their customers feel welcome, while testing and learning scalable corporate social responsibility solutions.
