Nacht, Joshua G. "The role of the family champion." Thesis, Saybrook University, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3712740.

Full text
Abstract:

This qualitative research study explored the characteristics, emergence, and engagement of people who occupy the role of the family champion in family-enterprise systems. The family champion is a next-generation leader who emerges from within the ownership group of a family-enterprise system and who works to develop the ownership, governance, and relational capabilities of the family-owners to support their goals of success. This study investigated the interdependent exchanges between individual family champions, the family-ownership group, and their family-enterprise systems. Much of the existing research on leadership within family-enterprises has focused on leadership for the business entity. This study focused specifically on leadership within the family-ownership group. Ownership of an enterprise by a family has long been cited as a strategic asset. A need exists for further understanding of the role and function of leadership within the family-owners.

This study explored the characteristics, emergence, and engagement of 14 primary family champions through semi-structured qualitative interviews. An additional eight supporting interviews were conducted with another family member who was familiar with the primary interviewee to provide a complimentary perspective. The research was discovery based and designed to explore the experiences of family champions. The extensive interviews were transcribed and analyzed utilizing grounded theory principles with the assistance of NVivo 10 qualitative analysis software.

This research revealed a rich interaction between the context of family-enterprise systems, the characteristics of family champions, and systemic shift points that created the awareness of the need for leadership. The family champions worked to develop the family-ownership group through a cycle of engagement, to produce an advanced family-enterprise system. Four main themes linked to issues in family-enterprises emerged: The systemic context of family-enterprises, the process of leadership emergence, how family champions operate as catalysts for change, and governance of both family and enterprise. The family champion is a visionary catalyst who brings new energy into the family system to support and develop the family-ownership advantage. This research makes a contribution to our understanding of the vital role of leadership within family-enterprises, and has significance for individual leaders, families who own a business, and professionals who work with these systems.

Abstract:
The genus Trachyphloeomimus is redescribed and the T. championi species group is revised. The T. championi group includes three previously described species: T. championi O'Brien, T. spurcus Champion, T. undulatoides O'Brien; and thirteen new species: T. apionus, T. arcuatibius, T. batmobile, T. bravoensis, T. calcaritibius, T. carinatus, T. discus, T. festivipenis, T. heliconodulus, T. jonesi, T. junctus, T. obrieni, T. popeyeus. Relationships among these species are assessed and discussed and the monophyly of the species group is demonstrated. A key to species in the T. championi group and illustrations of species-group level defining characters are provided. Species in the T. championi group are restricted to Mexico, largely in the state of Oaxaca, but the distribution of the genus now includes Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras and El Salvador. Six of the sixteen species in the T. championi group are known only from females.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and primary cause of long-term disability in the United States. Public awareness of stroke symptoms and ability to activate the emergency medical system (EMS) quickly are essential for early treatment. At a large Joint Commission-certified Comprehensive Stroke Center with over 6,000 employees, a stroke champion program that included both clinical and nonclinical volunteers was initiated to determine whether stroke champion volunteers could learn and disseminate information about stroke symptoms and the importance of activating EMS within their community. Roger's diffusion-of- innovation framework was used to design and evaluate the outcome of the project. A survey of 46 stroke champion hospital clinical and nonclinical employee volunteers was conducted using a secured web-based survey that employed a Likert scale to evaluate the effectiveness of the program. The survey collected information on whether the stroke champion needed a license to perform their job at the hospital and evaluated the content of the program, the setting of the meeting, presenter's effectiveness, instructional method, and learners achievement of the programs objectives. Over 90% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that the program achieved the objectives set forth in each category of the survey. A stroke champion program that incorporates all employees, not just nurses, could bring about positive social change by increasing health literacy through the dissemination of stroke information to all community members.

Abstract:
Developing collaborative practice is an ongoing process requiring frequent upgrades as team members and processes are added. Recently, faculty in ETSU’s Department of Family Medicine have been experimenting with a mechanism for iterative upgrades to team care practice known as Champion Teams. Champion Teams are based on the Institute of Medicine’s "learning health care system" approach in which practitioners develop an internal strategy for implementing new evidence based practices on an ongoing basis. In this presentation, our interprofessional team will describe team-based education and practice at ETSU as it relates to the Champion Team concept including its origins, evidence-base, and the logistics of how it functions. We will provide examples of four Champion Team projects including: 1) integrating behavioral health, 2) increasing attendance at medical visits, 3) increasing vaccination rates, and 4) a transition to a new pharmacological regimen for congestive heart failure patients. The exemplars will demonstrate how quality improvement data informed progressive changes and confirmed implementation outcomes. During discussion, we will encourage participants to identify their own targets for champion teams.

In addition to presenting the Champion Team concept as a strategy for implementing new team care initiatives, interprofessional providers will present two case examples from each adult and pediatric primary care. At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to: Define the term "learning healthcare system" and its application to Champion Teams. Describe the utility of and keys to implementing Champion Teams. Full text
Abstract:
This thesis deals with the champion. It aims at understandings how the greatness of the champion is built in our modern societies and its relation with justice. The study attempts to traduce identity problems which are linked to the nomination and the public recognition. The examination of cases allows to focus the investigation on the champion's way to assume his greatness on the social scene and to expose himself the public sentence. This research based on diversity of methods describes how the champion is built and attempts to show clearly the different events or tests he as to pass. However the events are not only sporting ones but also identity tests because the greatness can be for the person a moral and public tragedy. The sociological look focuses on the passage of the champion's greatness through social worlds, on the excellence cost and what he feels. It also underlines what happens and events he has to pass which needs to express the real experience of the greatness. Thus it shows how the champion can reorganize his relationship with people, reconsider his environment, the resources that he needs to remain the same through the time and the space

Abstract:
In 1908 Jack Johnson became the first black heavyweight boxing champion of the world. His reign would be rife with controversy, leading to widespread racial violence and draconian government intervention. Lester Walton, theater critic for the New York Age, became obsessed with Johnson; his extensive writing on the boxer powerfully reveals not just Walton’s own struggle with issues of race in America, but sheds light on the difficulties the black community at large faced in trying to make sense of a figure who simultaneously represented hope for the positive change Reconstruction failed to produce and, ironically, also threatened to intensify the hardships of Jim Crow era oppression.

Broussard, James Allen. "A champion for the disaffected: Ross Perot's 1992 presidential crusade." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/187056.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1992, Ross Perot, billionaire entrepreneur from Texas, headed the most powerful independent presidential candidacy of the twentieth century, garnering nearly 19 percent of the popular vote. Perot's rhetoric demanded fundamental reform through a seemingly contradictory message calling for both individual responsibility and collective patriotism and sacrifice: corporate populism, a traditional, albeit profoundly paradoxical ideological appeal. Perot spoke of rekindling the "American Dream" for the next generation, whose prospects appeared bleak because of a post-Cold War credit crisis and withering of the United States' industrial base. He saw linkages between this crisis and a host of social problems, and advocated controversial solutions that made coalition-building difficult. Perot looked to his followers to develop consensuses on many issues of the day. Heading a "grassroots" movement organized from the top down, with disciples from all points on the ideological compass, however, Perot found consensus a rare commodity. As a result, his campaign lacked cohesion. Perot's methods, personality, and wealth raised disturbing questions about the future of representative democracy, but his unfolding campaign also highlighted shortcomings in American electoral institutions and processes. Perot's treatment by the press, for example, provides a case study of the mass-production of political portraits and the impact of those images. That so many citizens voted for a man often portrayed as a suspicious, morally rigid, unscrupulous, vengeful demagogue indicates how widely disaffection with American political institutions had spread. Tapping this discontent, Perot created the potential for a new kind of politics in the United States. He catalyzed discourse on policy issues like foreign trade, welfare reform, military policy, and Executive branch responsibility. He focused attention on chronic problems like the national debt, the annual budget deficit, and the insolvency of "entitlement" programs like Social Security and Medicare. His presence seems to have provoked an unusually high turnout on election day. He helped pioneer a new era of direct dialog between candidates and citizens through the use of interactive and electronic media. Finally, Perot's candidacy symbolizes the emergence of a new centrist political movement--a force which in 1994 began to dramatically reshape the American political landscape.

The tribu Optatini Champion, 1907 is composed of small to large-sized (2,3- 18,3 mm) weevils beetles, characterized by to have: rhomboidal or suboval body, covered with scales variegated, nearly everywhere of the body or forming points and spots; the mandibles toothed on the their inner edge; the prostern generally strongly grooved down the middle, and with absent prosternal spine in the male; the anterior coxae contiguos to broadly separated; the femora sharply dentate or denticulate; the tibiae dentate ucinate; the tarsal claws generally united on base. The genera of this tribe are associated with the botanical genera Annona L. (Annocaceae) and Pentagonia Bentham (Rubiaceae). The geographical distribuition of the group is little know, and it is restricted to Neotropical region (México, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panamá, Colômbia, Venezuela, Trinidade and Tobago, Guiana Francesa, Brasil, Equador, Peru, Bolívia and Argentina). The redescription and the phylogenetic of the genera of Optatini are presented based on new characters discovered during the study, and on others already found in the literature. Eleven genera were redescribed: Costovia Casey, 1922, Lydamis Pascoe, 1889, Pardisomus Pascoe, 1889, Pseudoptatus Champion, 1907, Tripestes Casey, 1922, Pistus Faust, 1894, Sympages Pascoe, 1889, Eurypages Pascoe, 1872, Telemus Pascoe, 1889, Macroptatus Heller, 1906, and Optatus Pascoe, 1889. Only Parasyprestia were not redescribed. All the twelve genera can be identified by key provided. All the descriptions include illustrations to make easy the identification. Lectotypes are designated to species Costovia brunnea, Lydamis conicicollis, L. semiluctuosus, Pardisomus geniculatus, P. multiguttatus, P. rufescens, Pseudoptatus morio e Pistus niveus. New dates about geographical distribuition are provided, being Lydamis reported for the first time from the Provincie of Guanacaste (Costa Rica), Rondônia, Mato Grosso Sul, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Santa Catarina States (Brazil), Archinamiza (Peru), Department of Beni (Bolívia); Pardisomus from Nouveau Chantier (French Guiana), Province of Pastaza (Equador); Pistus from Espírito Santo (Brazil), Pichincha (Equador), Lima and Madre de Dios (Peru), La Paz (Bolivia); Sympages from Guanacaste (Costa Rica); Eurypages to Tocantins and Goiás (Brazil); Telemus from French Guiana, Pará, Bahia, Goiás, Distrito Federal, Minas Gerais, Espiríto Santo, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil), Department of Paraguari (Paraguai); Macroptatus to Guanacaste (Costa Rica); Optatus from the Department of Jalisco (Mexico), Quiché and Baja Vera Paz Departmentes (Guatemala), Guanacaste and Heredia (Costa Rica). The cladistic analysis, based on 45 characters, found not support to monophyly of Optatini, resulted that Optatini is a group comprising six branch (the genera Costovia, Lydamis, Pardisomus and Pseudoptatus, and the branch Sympages and Eurypages).

Rednak, Susan Lynn. "Fall Prevention Quality Initiative: Implementation of a Unit Safety Champion (USC)." ScholarWorks, 2015. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/1523.

Full text
Abstract:
The literature supports that a Unit Safety Champion (USC) may reduce falls among hospitalized patients. The purpose of this project was to determine if the implementation of a USC would assist in reducing falls on an acute unit in an urban hospital environment. The frequency of patient falls on the unit was collected from the hospital's quality department 3 months before and 3 months after the implementation of the USC. The average number of falls for 3 months before implementation was 5.0 per month (SD = 2.65) and involved a total of 15 individual patients. The average number of falls for 3 months after implementation was 5.33 (SD = 1.53) and involved a total of 16 individual patients. Although the average number of falls increased, there was no statistically significant difference in the average number of falls between these time periods. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the unit experienced an increase in nursing turnover while implementing the USC. Although this confounding variable was not examined as part of this project, the results demonstrate the importance of nursing turnover on adverse patient events. The literature suggests that front-line workers may contribute to a quality change in the acute environment. Using Lewin's change model as a foundation, an action plan was submitted to the fall committee emphasizing the relational importance of nurse staffing management and adverse events. It is recommended that a longitudinal project be conducted to fully understand the contribution of the USC to the unit.

Schlüter, Thomas. "Performance Management in a German Hidden Champion - an Action Research investigation." Thesis, University of Bradford, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/17397.

Full text
Abstract:
Purpose - This thesis addresses the lack of research on Performance Management (PM) in Hidden Champions (HCs) due to development and implementation of a HC tailored PM system (PMS) in Action Research Design (AR). A HC tailored strategy map and PMS framework were elaborated to improve the financial and non-financial performance of the HC. Design/methodology/approach - A longitudinal case study with two AR cycles were performed to develop the HC tailored strategy map and framework for the PMS including their implementation using mixed methods data collection. A validated HC tailored strategy map and framework for the PMS implementation are presented. Findings - Findings show significantly increased financial and non-financial performance of the HC. The revenue of the case company increased by 11.6%, the return on revenue increased 3% up to 17%, customer satisfaction grew, throughput times shortened and leadership competencies improved. Findings further show that AR is an effective procedure for HC tailored PMS design and implementation. Research limitations and practical implications - The findings are based on one case study and needs to be tested in other HCs. Findings should be of interest to scholars in the field of PM, as well as practitioners improving financial and non-financial performance. Poke, Robin, and n/a. "A case study of Olympic, World and Commonwealth Sculling champion Peter Antonie." University of Canberra. Health Sciences, 2006. http://erl.canberra.edu.au./public/adt-AUC20061207.104628.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a biographical case study of Olympic, World and Commonwealth sculling champion Peter Antonie, whose career at the elite or high performance level spanned some 23 years from 1977 to 2000. The thesis examines the exploits of an oarsman and sculler regarded within his sport as one of Australias greatest ever, despite his being considered physically disadvantaged at every phase of his career. Antonie was, most notably, a man of small stature widely considered a handicap at the level of rowing to which he aspired, and at which he ultimately succeeded. The study also examines what it was, despite those perceived disadvantages, that drove him to excel. The thesis further examines, in thematic form, parallel developments within Australian rowing and sculling in the quarter of a century in which Peter Antonie competed. This was a period during which fundamental changes were seen in Australian sport, notably in the areas of funding and administration, and which saw a transformation from amateur to professional participation at the Olympic, Commonwealth Games and world championships levels. There were also marked changes to high performance rowing as a result of technological advances that produced new types of equipment, and scientific developments that brought new training and selection methodologies. The research was carried out as part of a systematic attempt to examine and investigate Peter Antonies reputation, particularly as it compares with his better-known contemporaries, the so-called Oarsome Foursome, and to analyse that reputation in light of the administrative developments in Australian rowing and Australian sport. The historical approach used was the biographical method of research and analysis, with the preferred technique the obtaining of oral testimony from 50 interviewees, some of whom were interviewed more than once. The research clearly indicated that throughout his career Peter Antonie continually defied assumptions about his potential, particularly where science-based preconceptions about talent identification were concerned, and achieved success far beyond initial expectations. As a result his achievements, nationally and globally, are perhaps unparalleled, and he is held in the highest regard, particularly by the higher profile Oarsome Foursome. Despite this accolade, however, Antonies public profile remains very low, to the extent that beyond the rowing fraternity he is virtually unknown. Despite, too, rowings status as an Olympic sport and the commensurate increases in funding during Antonies career, he himself maintains a fundamentally amateur approach to his participation in rowing and is critical of several facets of its current professional administration. Despite, too, rowing and sculling once being among Australias major sports a hundred or so years ago, within contemporary Australian society it has a low profile, a situation which, given that current administration, appears likely to continue. Problems encountered during the research included some diffidence on the part of an essentially humble and self-effacing subject and a lack of literature relating to Antonie and his sport. But these were to an extent offset by the enthusiasm displayed for the project by other interviewees. The results of the research are significant in that, like the subject, they defy some precepts concerning facets of Australian rowing and sculling, which in turn might encourage further investigation.

Williams, Shawn Lamar. ""The people's champion" : folk heroism and the oral artistry of Muhammad Ali." DigitalCommons@Robert W. Woodruff Library, Atlanta University Center, 2000. http://digitalcommons.auctr.edu/dissertations/460.

Abstract:
Long after a career that was as much marred by criticism as marked by accomplishment, Muhammad Au receives considerable public acclaim for his athletic accomplishments and his humanitarianism. However, no scholarly attention has been given to this man as a literary force who, through the power of his word, impacted the consciousness of this nation and world. This dissertation examines Ali as an artist operating within the context of African and African American oral literary traditions and will explore the impact of his oratory on the sociopolitical consciousness of this country. The analysis of the oral literature of Muhammad Ali, which consists of his lectures, interviews, and poetry, will involve an assessment of those aspects that make it a manifestation of the verbal culture of Africa and African America. Moreover, the study illustrates the degree to which the rhetoric and verse reflects both African-American national consciousness (i.e., black nationalism) and African folkloric tradition. In his creation of himself Ali utilizes traditional African and African American mythoforms like the trickster, the Badman, and the culture hero. In this respect, Muhammad Ali is the only athlete to emerge as an Afrocentric cultural hero. This subject encompasses matter of literature, African American studies, speech communications, and popular culture.

CHAMALIDIS, PRODROMOS. "L'identite masculine dans le sport de haut niveau splendeur et deuil du champion." Paris 5, 1998. http://www.theses.fr/1998PA05H031.

Full text
Abstract:
Meetings with fifty retired male sport champions, twenty five greek and twenty five french, was the basis for this research on the construction of masculine idenitity in highlevel sport. With the help of semi-structured interviews and a projective test (t. A. T. ), we highlighted the risks and the benefits to the identities of champions practising the most popular disciplines in their respective countries. Focusing on the two sub-populations allowed us to localize the champion's status based on his cultural and historical background. In general, the champion uses his athletic career as a means of structuring his masculine identity while benefiting from physical and emotional closeness to other men. The male group, the team or the training group, creates virile attitudes that are generally linked to the champion's mothering environment which can be the coach, the institution or the champion's mother. In addition, career termination reveals the necessity of renegociating feelings of omnipotence, using rather elaborate ways (work of mourning, sublimation) over regressive ways (denial, depression). This period is characterized by identity vascillations and crises, especially for those who do not anticipate the necessity to find identifications other than those linked to the status of being a champion. Finally we propose three settings for the clinical psychologist to work with high-level athletes on the brink of career termination

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis seeks to analyze the literary representations of sportsmen and of heroes in a corpus of works from Plato, Homer, Virgil, Ariosto, Tasso, Montherlant, Hemingway, on the one hand to show the connection between these sportsmen and these heroes to mythological figures and on the other hand to consider the connection that “real” present-day sportsmen keep with these mythological figures too. The thesis is organized into three sections. The first section entitled “Judiciousness on the choice of the figures: hero, champion, idol” aims to define “the three emblematic figures that are the hero, the champion, the idol”, to define “the sporting ideal” and to show the connection between the sportsmen and mythological figures of heroes. The second section focuses on Orpheus and Ulysses characters, two key figures regarding their remarkable intellectual depht and influence philosophically and religiously speaking. The third part entitled “Permanency of emblematic figures of the sporting ideal” goes into the admiration and imitation process, the contribution of Roland Barthes to the study of the figures from the sport world and the study of the relationship between sporting mythology and the creation of emblematic figures. The analysis of sportsmanlike heroes in the literature and in the extra-literary universe, regarding their relationship with the great figures of mythological heroes, gives the opportunity to make the link between a literary approach and sociological questionings, cultural studies. The analyses of the sport, in particular wrestling and Tour de France by Roland Barthes in Mythologies, constitute one of the fundamental theoretical references presented in the thesis. The examination of the facts, of the events as stated in the corpus and the peripheral literary works reveal that the idea of a plain separation between the three chosen figures does not hold despite the differences at the semantic level. However to find chronological continuity links between imaginary or real characters in terms of ideal sporting behaveiour is convincing in the sense that the chosen thematic framework could be adapted to the legends, to the mythology, to the historical facts, to the contemporary events. The identification of a nation to a sport symbol reinforces the prevailing role of the idol on the peoples, of the champion on the supporters, of the hero on the citizens

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to understand and analyze the degree to which southern California women superintendents utilized networks and mentorships and the impact it had in their career advancement. More specifically, this study set out to determine: 1) what barriers do women perceive hinder their access to the superintendent position, 2) what professional supports are available to women as new superintendents, 3) what networking opportunities assist women in their pursuit of the superintendency, and 4) what are the best networking methods used by women to ascend to the role of superintendent. This study utilized a mixed-method methodology. For the qualitative data, electronic surveys were distributed to 45 superintendents for a return rate of 42%. Three interviews were conducted for the quantitative perspective. Participants represented a diverse background and diverse school districts. The lens of feminist standpoint theory and social capital theory informed the analysis. Through the process of triangulation, the study’s findings indicate the participants utilized networks and mentorships to different degrees and with mixed results. An in-depth analysis of the impact networks and mentorships have on women’s career trajectory provided recommendations for networks and mentors to challenge gendered professional norms, increased access to influential people in women’s networks, and defined career pathways to the superintendency in terms of demonstrated leadership experiences over male-dominated leadership positions held. Overall, this study finds hope for women aspiring to become superintendents. Women should participate in multiple networks and develop relationships with several mentors who are willing to share the access to the superintendency.

Abstract:
Due to the rapid destruction of native orchid habitats it has become necessary to house many endangered orchid species in greenhouse environments where enhanced spread of viral disease occurs due to the close contact between plants. This research was concerned with the construction of a library of genes whose expression is induced in response to viral challenge. In uncovering the genes that are activated during plant-pathogen interactions, it may be possible to manipulate these pathways to develop virus resistant orchids. Furthermore, this research will contribute additional information for the existing framework of plant-pathogen interactions of all plant species. In order to construct a library of genes expressed in response to viral infection, suppression subtractive hybridization was performed using the PCR-Select cDNA Subtraction Kit (CLONTECH, Palo Alto, CA) on Sophrolaeliacattleya Ginny Champion 'Riverbend' clones. RNA was isolated from plants that had been inoculated with the Odontoglossum ringspot virus (ORSV) and from control plants that had not been inoculated with ORSV. Following reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) to obtain cDNA, cDNAs of the tester population (those cDNAs containing differentially expressed messages in response to ORSV) and the driver population (reference cDNAs from uninfected plants) were obtained. The two different cDNA populations are mixed together and hybridized. The sequences common to both populations were subtracted, leaving only the differentially expressed sequences available for PCR amplification.A library containing these genes was constructed, and one clone, chosen at random, was sequenced. Based on homology comparisons to known genes, we have cloned a gene that may contain a nucleotide binding site similar to that of the tobacco N gene, important for plant resistance to pathogens. In the near future, this clone will be used to construct probes for use in northern analysis to determine the timing and localization of the products of this gene. This information will aid in characterizing the function of the orchid N-gene and identifying other members of this signal cascade. In addition, many other clones await sequencing and similar characterization.

Bell, Barbara. "An evaluation of the impacts of the Champion Coaching Scheme on youth sport and coaching." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2004. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/7645.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the impacts and legacy of the Champion Coaching Scheme of the National Coaching Foundation, focusing on three case studies of implementation from 1996-1999, on Merseyside and North Wales. As one of the most significant and longrunning programmes of the 1990s, Champion Coaching represented a national blueprint for the development of youth sport and coaching. The evaluation uses a 'realist' approach, drawing upon the scientific realism of Pawson and Tilley (1997). Outcomes are derived from the programme theory developed for Champion Coaching in a multi-method approach. Central to this analysis is the need to examine the context, mechanisms and outcomes from programmes. It draws together evidence from a range of primary and secondary sources; participants, parents, coaches, sport Development practioners, teachers; young people; Census and deprivation statistics. Using a range of techniques, including face to face and telephone interviews, survey and geographical analysis, context- mechanism-outcome configurations of each case study were produced, in order to draw out how the programme 'worked', and contribute to building the evidence base for sport development interventions. The results demonstrate that the blueprint was flexibly interpreted and delivered resulting in particular patterns of outcomes in the different cases. Champion Coaching represented a successful approach to the development of 'perfon-nance pathways', as the level of club membership in participants was higher than suggested by national surveys. In contributing to coaching development, the Scheme had some clear impacts on the human capital involved in sport. However, results were not uniform and show how the sporting infrastructure and attitudes of schools or Governing Bodies to such programmes, can influence whether gains in such capital can be sustained. At the meso-level of analysis of policy for youth sport and coaching, the research shows how Champion Coaching contributed to the policy development in this increasingly salient policy area and points to its legacy in school-aged sport. The conclusions point to some of the lessons learned for future policies and the implications for outcome-oriented evaluations, including the need to plan such evaluation at the stage of programme design.

Franco, Peters M. R. "Conservation as a champion for social justice and cultural revitalization within South American Indigenous groups." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2015. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1467255/.

Full text
Abstract:
Europeans’ arrival in the Americas ignited a process of colonization that produced slavery, acculturation, evangelization and the eventual extermination of many American Indigenous groups. This is still manifest in today’s social invisibility, lack of representation, and persisting stereotypes. South American Indigenous peoples seek articulations of public identities that express their cultural diversity while referring to their historic roots and communicating their contemporaneity. Collections originated by South American Indigenous peoples or related minorities can be used in more democratic articulations of history, and to enhance representation and visibility in society without compromising historic and social context. This thesis explores how conservators may facilitate these processes and how this could transform their discipline. It relates contemporary and recent contexts of conservation to the work of Paulo Freire (also Participatory Action Research advocates and Postcolonialist theorists) to illuminate the formation and maintenance of power structures and their possible reversals. Use of objects and collections is demonstrated with examples like the Bororo of Merure, the Tupinambá of Olivença (both in Brazil), and the Comuneros of San Cristóbal de Rapaz (Peru). This thesis argues that the cross-disciplinary nature of conservation and the different processes involved may provide spaces in which to articulate, negotiate and materialize new engagements. However, ideals of neutrality still implicit in contemporary conservation practice, although demonstrably misplaced, undermine such engagements. Conservation provides spaces that spawn examination and redefinition of structures of power, inside and outside the museum. The knowledge the conservation processes unveil should not be merely used to reinforce dominant knowledge but to create independent knowledge that may, in turn, reflect back on the discipline and strengthen it. Before that, conservators have to take ownership of their space and be ready to transform their own practice. Understanding the potential power entailed in the transformations provoked by conservation is part of conservators’ craft.

Abstract:
In 1976, U.S. Congressman Mario Biaggi, D-NY, seized on Jimmy Carter's comments regarding human rights conditions in Northern Ireland. Biaggi, and several Irish/American groups, took these comments as an opening to challenge British policies in Northern Ireland. To aid this effort Biaggi in 1977 formed the Ad Hoc Congressional Committee for Irish Affairs, focusing on human rights in Northern Ireland. Their efforts ran up agains long-established U.S./British diplomatic relations and faced strong opposition in U.S. and Irish political circles. As the Northern Ireland debate unfolded during the Carter Administration, Biaggi and the Ad Hoc Committee increasingly aligned with pro-IRA forces and were in turn denounced as supporters of terrorists. This characterization misses the importance of their efforts to broaden the political dialogue to include paramilitary groups and in increasing attention to the human rights situation in Northern Ireland, both key early steps leading to the 1998 Good Friday Agreement.

This thesis falls under the problem of the burnourt syndrome among young competitive tennis players. It presents, as well at the theoretical level as empirical, the course of young competitive players, carrying them out the dream to become champion, with disillusion then with the burnout. The articulation of this work is carried out around a burnout modeling in sport, , clarified by the installation of three studies: the first sends back to the desire excellence of the young player by treating his representation of the champion and of his course; the second draws up a psychological and psychosocial profile of the burned out player; finally, the third is centered on the organization of the high level sport as a potential source of psychological suffering. Our conclusions highlight the multifactor aspects of burnout and propose some tracks of reflexion and prevention against this syndrome

Full text
Abstract:
Toxoplasma gondii is a cosmopolite obligate intracellular Apicomplexa parasite that infects a wide repertoire of warm-blooded animals and virtually all nucleated cells. About a third of the human population carries the persistent stage of T. gondii, and is known at risk for life-threatening toxoplasmosis in case of immune-dysfunction. The invasiveness of the T. gondii tachyzoite developmental stage is a key determinant for expansion of the parasite population and accounts for the initiation of acute tissue damages associated with the disease. The tachyzoite is a several micrometer size bow-shaped cell that displays a robust polarity and is equipped with a typical apical apparatus made of cytoskeletal arrangements and specific secretory vesicles. With these attributes, the tachyzoite contact the host cell surface with the apical side and enters within a second time-scale into a budding entry vesicle by injecting a protein complex into and beneath the facing plasma membrane. The complex, seen here as an invasive nanodevice, defines a tight zoite-cell interface that bridges both cells through a circular junction. This tight Zoite-Cell Junction (ZCJ) serves therefore as a door of entry but also as an anchor point to withstand the parasite invasive force required to actively enter the host cell. In addition, its tightness acts as a molecular sieve to select for components from the plasma membrane able to flow into the budding entry vesicle. The PhD thesis brings new insights on the forces underlying (i) the peculiar mode of locomotion called helical gliding of free tachyzoite (ii) the host cell invasion event in particular at the end of the process thereby introducing conceptual and experimental biophysics framework. The first part combines high-speed quantitative live microscopy with force microscopy and Reflection Interference Contrast Microscopy and use micropatterning. These quantitative approaches have allowed unveiling the spatiotemporal integration of a unique polar anchoring adhesion and the traction-spring-torque triad forces that set the Toxoplasma thrust force required for high-speed helical gliding. The second part of the PhD relies on the quantitative high speed live imaging and on a set of both parasite and host cell lines engineered to express fluorescent markers of interest, in particular related to the ZCJ element, together with innovative invasion assays designed to monitor in detail the poorly documented pinching off step of the budding entry vesicle. Indeed this membrane fission event promotes the birth of a bona fidae sub-cellular compartment enclosing the tachyzoite, and further remodeled to support parasite growth. These approaches have allowed identifying the peculiar rotation of the tachyzoite along the long axis which imposes a twisting motion on the parasite basal pole and directs closure of the circular invasive device therefore promoting both sealing and release of the entry vesicle. Importantly membrane fission occurs upstream the site of the nanodevice insertion and is independent of the host cell mechanoenzymes dynamins, a protein family primarily involved in pinching off of the endocytic pits and thus in endosome birth. Overall, the work supports the view that the tachyzoite has evolved a multifunction invasive nanodevice, which together with the final torque mimics the fission activity of the dynamins. Finally, monitoring distinct host cell plasma markers and their rapid reorganization upon the tachyzoite twist allowed proposing that the latter could also act as an initial mechanical trigger for the transition to the intracellular lifestyle. In conclusion, this PhD work has succeeded in implementing new biophysics-based concepts and techniques to start unraveling the biomechanics of the T. gondii tachyzoite, in particular in the context of essential behaviors including (i) the navigation on 2D and within 3D substrates and (ii) the host cell invasion process

Rekangalt, David. "Étude de la régulation des gènes de la voie d'assimilation du nitrate du champion symbiotique Hebeloma cylindrosporum." Lyon 1, 2003. http://www.theses.fr/2003LYO10120.

Full text
Abstract:

Sports entities such as clubs, federations, NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations), and other forms of nonprofit sports organizations (NPSOs) can no longer be considered as local phenomenon to become organizations known broadly all over the world and public interest and awareness can be perceived not only in Brazilian market, as in traditional markets (such as European audience) and on emerging markets as China and India, new markets to football such as North America. However, the great disparity among clubs that belong to the called “Big Five” (English, French, German, Italian and Spanish Leagues) has potential to develop such a great distance to teams from other leagues that can have an effect on these teams capacity to invest beyond their original markets. The objective of this research is to identify the main factors for Brazilian football team internationalization by strategic networks and institutional view approaches by proposing a conceptual model which describes NPSO’s performance. Literature review reveals that ties and connections to inimitable resources, learning races and being a leader or to be in an important position in network are main factors for network formation in order to achieve internationalization. For that purpose it was adopted a qualitative exploratory research in single case study, with a Brazilian NPSO, Sport Club Corinthians Paulista – in this research called Corinthians, data was collected by in depth-interviews with fifteen key respondents. These depth-interviews were conducted with Corinthians’ management, business partners, as well as sports management journalists from major Brazilian media companies. At the end of this research it is proposed a performance model for nonprofit sports organizations, which considers the resource acquisition capacity, internal capabilities as antecedents to its performance. Main findings revealed that resource acquisition capabilities, organization`s size, brand and image reputation, in addition of institutional environmental are relevant factors for internationalization by networks. As a theoretical contribution, firms having strong brand and image reputation with resources that will strength network are an important factor for a firm entering a network or to form one. Regarding managerial perspective, a main contribution is to propose a sequence of factors for sports organizations aiming to achieve global audience.

Abstract:
This historical study examines events, institutions, experiences, and relationships in Pinkerton's life for educational significance in developing her extraordinary commitment to the common good. Data are viewed through the Deweyan lens of education as continuous, participative, and experiential. Additionally, the study illuminates from Pinkerton's speeches examples of her education of others regarding the need for the common good. Components of the common good found in the philosophical literature and ego transcendence stemming from a wisdom deep within oneself found in the literature of transpersonal psychology form the conceptual framework upon which this study builds. The chapters are thematic in scope with the content of each chapter presented chronologically to illuminate a continuous education. The study revealed an integral interaction of education, spirituality, and history in the development and educative embodiment of Pinkerton's transpersonal commitment to the common good. Pinkerton lived a uniquely structured life as a member of the Congregation of Saint Joseph religious community. Emphasis on theological reflection, critical reflection, dialogue, and action for change fostered a perspective transformation regarding the role of women religious in the Roman Catholic Church and led to an analysis of systems that bring oppression of other groups and of planet earth. This awareness eventually led Pinkerton to educate and lobby the U.S. Congress for inclusion of all in the common good. The study concludes with a metaphor of Pinkerton's life as a whole cloth or seamless garment being constructed from threads of the past, present, and envisioned future. A dialogical shuttle weaves the threads into vibrant, ever-changing, richly hued designs. The design increases in complexity and richness guided by radical, responsible freedom. Such freedom arises from a relationship with a divine wisdom deep within Pinkerton-a relationship through which developed an understanding of the interconnectedness of all things in the common good. Pinkerton's championship of the common good evolved historically through continuous, participative, experiential engagement with learning.

Abstract:
Much has been published in Chicano studies over the past thirty to forty years; lacking in the historiography are the roles that Chicanas have played, specifically concerning politics in Dallas, Texas. How were Chicanas able to advance El Movimiento (the Mexican American civil rights movement)? Anita Martínez was the first woman to serve on the Dallas City Council and the first Mexican American woman to be elected to the city council in any major U.S. city. She served on the council from 1969 to 1973 and remained active on various state and local boards until 1984. Although the political system of Dallas has systematically marginalized Mexican American political voices and eradicated Mexican American barrios, some Mexican Americans fought the status quo and actively sought out the improvement of Mexican barrios and an increase in Mexican American political representation, Anita N. Martínez was one of these advocates. Long before she was elected to office, she began her activism with efforts to improve her children’s access to education and efforts to improve the safety of her community. Martinez was a champion for the Chicano community, especially for the youth. Her work for and with young Chicanos has earned her the moniker, “Defender of Dreams.” She created a chicano recreation center in Dallas, as well as various poverty programs and neighborhood beautification projects. Although she has remained relatively unknown, during her tenure on the Dallas City Council, between the years 1969 and 1973, Anita Martínez made invaluable, lasting contributions to the Chicano community in Dallas.

Abstract:
The master of the champion des dames is an unknown illuminator. He worked during the second half of fifteenth century in the northern France (circa 1470) for members of the burgundy court. Author of eight manuscripts illustrated with two hundred and three paintings, he used with equal quality aquarelle, gouache and grisaille techniques on paper and parchment. His manner, though characteristic of Lille area illuminators and Picardy painters, is original by his unique use of colours and lines. He was also creator of tapestry models

Abstract:

Over the course of the last 60 years, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) rights movement in the United States has become a beacon of light around the world where LGBT persons continue to face intolerance, discrimination, persecution, and death. As this qualitative phenomenological study was being written, LGBT Americans taking advantage of their legal rights to marry, still face employment discrimination, housing discrimination, adoption discrimination, immigration discrimination, and discrimination in public accommodations including a Presidential Executive Order, state, and local legislation forcing transgender people to use the restroom that reflects their assigned gender at birth. In fact, in almost three dozen states an LGBT person could exercise their legal right to get married and still legally get fired from their job, legally get kicked out of their apartment by their landlord, and get denied an adoption simply because they are LGBT without other legal protections. Each of these issues has an effect on employee recruitment, retention, and performance and an effect in terms of creating an organizational culture where all employees can thrive without fear of retaliation, retribution, or being unaffirmed in the workplace. Affirmative corporate activism in the form of company supported LGBT employee resource groups/business resource groups, LGBT serving volunteer efforts, philanthropy, and public policy advocacy efforts combined have helped to make corporate America a critical ally in the movement for LGBT legal equality. This qualitative phenomenological study examines how LGBT employee resource group/business group leaders and executive champions influence corporate activism on LGBT issues. The rise of elected conservative leadership in the United States and around the world challenges the espoused values of corporate leaders on LGBT issues. This conservative revolution challenging the gains of the LGBT movement also creates an opportunity for corporate America to develop standards, practices, and policies. Although LGBT people outside of corporate America are likely to remain far more vulnerable to an increasingly more hostile government, corporate America has a unique opportunity to develop best practices and strategies to keep employees safe, make their customers feel welcome, while testing and learning scalable corporate social responsibility solutions.

Ho, Siu-fong, and 何兆芳. "Champion estate: a case study of Laguna Verde(policy analysis on government's objective in encouraging owners'/occupiers' participation in private building management)." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2012. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B4834168X.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper concerns with a study of policy of Hong Kong Government in effective building management. With the Government’s established policy in advocating building management, the Home Affairs Department (HAD) make use of competitions to induce property management companies (PMCs) and owners’ organizations to improve the management standard. After semi-structured interviews with organizer, judges and participants of competition, the Government’s policy is analyzed. Laguna Verde (LV) in Kowloon City District is taken as an example for illustration. It was found that they make use of techniques similar to business competitive strategies for preparing the competition. This may be the reason for their continued championship. It was concluded that the policy is well address to the objective of advocating quality building management and therefore effective. In addition, the policy has attributes of being an efficient policy, with equity and community acceptance. The institutional constraints are also less because the policy well aligns with other policies. In addition, the policy is flexible and different format can be adopted to address different policy and social needs. Quality Building Management Competition (QBMC) is a territory-wide district-base programme organized by the HAD. LV has been successful in obtaining the championship in Kowloon City District QBMC for five consecutive terms, i.e., 2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07, 2008-09 & 2009-10 (the term of 2007-08 was suspended). Using LV as an example, it is considered the factors for achieving quality management. The various strategies adopted by LV in obtaining the championship are studied. It is then utilized to illustrate the key elements of quality management through owners’ and occupiers’ participation. These include the set up of management committees / owners’ corporations (OCs), the representative groups, to manage common parts of buildings and the appointment of PMCs, the trade practitioners, to provide services including professional support and management of common areas. It is also illustrated in this paper that there are other dimensions of institutional arrangements, ranging from the establishment of legal framework, provision of professional and support service to OCs by the Government, to the statutory regulation on the property management industry, which contribute to effective building management and maintenance. HAD, in response to government’s call on encouraging owners’ / occupiers participation in private building management, makes use of this competition to promote the good practice of building management. PMCs and OCs also make use of the competition in promoting their public image and enhancing the value of their properties. Therefore, a case study of how LV obtains the championship and an analysis in the implication of the competition in implementing the Government’s policy and serving the objective in private building management is valuable. The literature review includes the conceptual framework of challenge in managing common property, i.e. the tragedy of the commons versus the tragedy of the anticommons: when multiple owners hold rights to exclude others from a scarce resource and no one exercises an effective privilege of use, the resource might be prone to overuse / underuse. In the context of building management, this refers to the attribute that common area of the buildings is of multiple ownerships. If the rights and obligations of such communal private property are not clearly defined, this will inevitably lead to lack of proper maintenance of the common parts and in turn the dilapidation of buildings and the diminishing value of properties. This problem known as the tragedy of the commons and the anitcommons gives rise to different institutional arrangements for property right governance or property management. It is further investigated into the choice among different institutional arrangements and the collective action of owners’ active participation in building management by referring to transaction costs analysis and Collective Interest Model. Besides, the literature review gives background information of the competition, property management in general in Hong Kong, description of Kowloon City District QBMC and competitive strategies, in which both positioning and resources based approach will be applied. This is a descriptive research and qualitative method will be adopted. Semi-structured interviews will be conducted to the key staff participated in the competition. The organizer, that is, HAD and District Council (DC), as well as key members of the judging panel will also be interviewed. From the analysis on various opinions from participating parties in the QBMC, it is concluded that QBMC, being a competition programme, together with a series of individual and continual publicity and educational programmes, performs the function of facilitating effective building management by OCs and service quality improvement committed by PMCs. It echoes to and is efficacious in achieving the Government’s policy in encouraging owners’ / occupiers participation in private building management. To a certain extent, the Government’s role in provision of well-established statutory framework and support services for OCs, as well as in implementation of regulatory framework for private property industry in Hong Kong contributes to effective building management.

Abstract:
Sport and recreation is a crucial part of the fabric of Australian life. Sporting and recreational activities as well as events help to contribute to the development of strong social networks and cohesive communities. They provide opportunities for social engagements, which may lead to an increased awareness and acceptance of inherent differences between communities and individuals (Department of Sport and Recreation 2015). Although extremely important, providing a community with a large scale recreational facility can provide ongoing challenges in regards to health and safety, as well as environmental considerations. This report outlines some of the negative impacts associated with the operation of the Champion Lakes Regatta Centre (CLRC) and provides strategic action plan (SAP) for a suitable approach to addressing the impacts outlined and reducing the risk of recurrence. A number of water treatment options are outlined for consideration. Through the use of a selection matrix, options are weighted in order to propose a system which is most attractive for the purposes of salinity reduction and contaminant risk reduction. The process which had the highest score on the selection matrix was Reverse Osmosis (RO). The process of reverse osmosis is outlined with special consideration given to brackish water treatment as this is the classification given to the lake water. Limitations involved with this approach include the weighting factors being open to interpretation. Equations to estimate the pump requirements to overcome the osmotic pressure of a solution with similar total dissolved solids (TDS) content to that of the lake water are outlined and expected pump requirements are calculated in order to propose a design requirement for the implementation of a reverse osmosis system at the rowing course. An operational pressure greater than 24 bar is required according to the calculations conducted. Design considerations for the treated water quality are outlined; however large scale testing was not conducted due to financial constraints.
