Full textDuring the ancient régime, valets de chamber were probably the household officers closest to the French king. There were four "premier valets" and thirty-two "valets ordinary. " Part of the monarch's vast domestic staff (and members of the Royal Household in particular), these men served three-month shifts of duty, primarily attending the king when he rose in the morning and retired at night. Their official hierarchical rank was contradicted by the reality of their position - in the seventeenth century, far from being limited to menial tasks, they managed to win the king's trust and enjoyed a unique status. The "premier valets," although officers of the second rank, tended to get the better of their household superiors - the "Gentlemen of the Chamber" - when it came to personal contact with the king. Most valets were drawn from the bourgeoisie, and were granted a noble title; such titles had occasionally been hereditary but were merely individual by the end of the seventeenth century. Nevertheless, their appointment guaranteed valets all the privileges of second-rank officers, and a calculated policy of intermarriage along with a progressive closing of their professional shop meant that a title of nobility was no longer considered a priority. Solidly rooted in the royal household through tradition and through appointment to other offices, these men were never really excluded from the ranks of the aristocracy. Thanks to their close contact with the king (premier valets slept at the foot of the royal bed), some of them rose high on the social ladder. Dynasties begun under Louis XIII survived into the days of Louis XV and even Louis XVI - these faithful servants of the crown were rewarded with honors, titles, and wealth. This study is more than a history of a group of household servants, for it aims to offer a new view of the French court, as seen not by aristocratic writers of memoirs by rather by courtiers who practiced a "trade" there

Full textThe peripheral nerves are extensions of the central nervous system and are responsible for the sensory and motor functions of the limbs. These nerves are vulnerable to the same types of traumas that affect other tissues: contusion, compression, crushing, stretching, avulsion, and laceration. Amongst the most disabling kinds of injuries that affect working-age individuals are those of the peripheral nerves; due to the multifaceted characteristics of the aftereffects of the injury. The break in continuity of the nerve structure due to trauma, as in the case of neurotmesis, results in the disruption of the transmission of nerve impulses and the disorganization of their functions. Through the use of microsurgery, it was possible to develop reconstructive techniques that range from a simple end-to-end neurorrhaphy to sophisticated surgical procedures that utilize nerve grafts, inverted veins and arteries, and synthetic rods of varied materials such as silicone or porous polyethylene. Another aspect that intrigues researchers around the world is the utilization of neurogenic factors capable of accelerating or improving the regeneration of peripheral nerves. Autologous fat has been a constant reference in this field of surgery due to its abundant supply at the surgical site itself. The results are promising, as the adventitia of vessels consists of loose connective tissue rich in adipocytes. Thus in a trauma, the neurites derived from the proximal stump of the damaged nerve are in direct contact with these adipocytes. Following this reasoning, and based on previous studies where veins grafted with fresh skeletal muscle were used, we decided to conduct a randomized controlled study to test the possibility of axonal growth by means of grating with a polyethylene rod filled with autologous adipocytes associated with immersion in a hyperbaric chamber. In an attempt to recover the sciatic nerve, a rod 12 mm in length, with a diameter of 0.25 mm, and with pores of 80 μm in diameter, filled with adipose tissue in natura removed from the surroundings of said nerve, was used. The morphometric results showed that the experimental groups with and without fat fillings had results that, from the morphometric and functional point of view, were of no statistically significant difference. However, when these results were compared with the final control group, statistically significant differences were noted. Highlighting the functional evaluation through the use of Catwalk, it was found that there were no statistically significant differences between the experimental groups, but there was indeed a difference in comparison to the final control group. In light of the evidence found and supported by literature, one can conclude that the use of the hyperbaric chamber brought positive results verified by the proximity of both the morphometric and functional results of the experimental groups.

Full textThis study deals with the concept of « secret », in the specific context of kingship in Ancient Egypt, focusing on its requirements, its forms and its structural implications, from the beginning of the Old Kingdom until the end of the New Kingdom. A linguistic research on the Egyptian terms translating as « secret » and « private » and their synonyms (s)StA, waaw, Dsrw, jmn et HAp being the most common , which is complemented by a prosopographic study, enabled us to pinpoint the different categories of individuals who had access to the « secrets » and private affairs of the Egyptian kingship and what conditions were required to maintain secrecy. Then this privilege must have implied a real participation in the personal tasks performed for the king, whether these were rituals or affairs calling for discretion. The officials’ titles involving secrecy and knowledge of specific private rules, in particular the Hry-sStA title « he who is in charge of secrets », indicate the field of responsabilities and of activities of their holders in the king's entourage, in the king’s cult and in state administration. Some individuals could access to the restricted areas of the royal apartments, for a private consultation related to state affairs or in order to perform rites or ceremonies associated with the king. Each of these situations displays the determination of these officials, close to the king, to preserve the sanctity of the royal office. Studying these areas of confidentiality allows a better understanding of the pharaoh’s personal and ritualized life, in order to improve our perception of the functioning of royal power in Ancient Egypt
