Nguyen, Tien Nam. "Segmentation, Recognition and Indexing of Cham characters in Cham documents." Electronic Thesis or Diss., La Rochelle, 2023. http://www.theses.fr/2023LAROS016.
Full textSince the demise of Champa kingdoms during the 19th century, the Cham language that originated and developed from the 2nd century, is no longer really used among the descendants of the Champa. The lack of transmission of knowledge and documents of the Cham culture makes the study of this language difficult for epigraphists and historians. Therefore, the ANR CHAMDOC project aims to preserve and provide tools for studying the Cham language. In this thesis, we focused on the analysis of two types of Cham documents namely: inscriptions, which were engraved on stone steles, from 6th to 15th century; manuscripts dating from the 18th century. Some work on the digitization of inscriptions has started but no study has really been carried out. The collection of manuscripts, for its part, has never been exploited. These two collections offer many challenges for the scientific community. During this work, we propose a complete pipeline for the automatic processing of these documents. This is based on different DIA techniques. The challenges encountered come from the characteristics of the documents themselves, but also from the linguistic specificities of Cham. An analysis of these characteristics has been carried out in order to propose solutions adapted to inscriptions and manuscripts

Full textThe language area in a bamileke chiefdom is a monograph on one of the hundred chiefdoms which are located in the center west of camerron. It is called bangoua and it has six thousand inhabitants. This monograph consists of five parts, namely: the history of the chiefdom, the kinship system, the way society is organised, economical development and social structure. The historical data shows that this society was made up by the progressive overlapping of a segmentary lineage system and chieftain-centred political organisation. The independant analysis of these two institutions reveals that, although they both have the same basic structure, beliefs and economical activities promoted by the kinship system and the political organisation are quite different. The dichotomy between structure and self concept (meaning) explains that the bangoua were able to have two kinds of beliefs and two different economical practises without this causing unbearable congtradictions. The constant switching between the kinship system belief and those of the political organisation is one of the main factor infuencing the bangoua's adaptation to a western-system economy. The bamileke dynamism has been explained by demographic growth and their geographical situation, but it has been proven with other tribes (cf. Kirdi of north cameroon) that, when these two conditions exist, the society does not become necesseraly enterprising

Full textThis study aims at analysing various lexical, morphosyntactic and semantic aspects of one among several obstacles arising when studying a foreing language : time-honoured metaphorical expressions. The scope of research has been restricted to the specific field of music, comparaisons being made between French and Italian. A statistical study on the corpuses investigates the settling phenomenon from all terms of this music-specific lexical area to the field of figures of speech. Correlations with classes of lexemes in standard language allow a better appreciation of their metaphorical originality. Cutting out according to various levels of language qualifies these somehow mathematical considerations. The observation of morpho-syntactic structures along a Chomsky-inspired approach reveals how regular and simple these structures are. The only original feature would be a certain partiality for some of them. The examination of the mechanisms of semantic transfers proceeds from data resulting from the morpho-syntactic analysis. Semic analysis of literal utterances make us understand significant distorsions in the perception of voiced occurrences. The sphere of affectivity constitutes the essential of the signified. Phonetism in expressions follows disclosed semantic orientations. The two languages stand apart more through modalities of derision than through a different use of referents. The symbolic substrate erases, through its diachronic depth, the occasional gap between two languages. The study closes on didactical suggestions

Full textThe Kurdish field of literature which uses a dominated language is questioned here inside the frame of the territorialized language conflict in Turkey. This conflict places front to front two nationalisms with contradictory views regarding identities and territories. So first we question the Turkish State language policies concerning the Kurdish language and the territory to which it refers. Face to face to those policies, there stand the Kurdish politic movements whose one of the functions is to define a national identity and its possible link with the language. In that frame, the Kurdish literary products are questioned, as well as their organization by the actors, inside a national identity in permanent re-production. Therefore we examine in which way, inside the conflict, a Kurdish literary field, with its plural territories, will emerge and get autonomous; and which are the literary and non-literary objectives aimed at by that field

Full textThis research examines the conditions of possibilities within and the routes of entry of the African authors into the comic field of the French-speaking Europe. The dissertation employs a sociological approach by making, firstly, an institutional analysis of the conditions of production, circulation and reception, as well as the sociability in the local contexts, in particular in the French-speaking countries of sub-Saharan Africa. The examination of the modalities of publication in the edition or in the press, of the associations of authors, festivals and other promotional initiatives, and of the possibilities offered by associations and institutions, shows that local authors have to realize their artistic vocation and their professional projects in poorly organized and unfavourable environments. Of course, this state of things requires agents to exercise their greater or lesser skill in adapting to it and making it play to the advantage of their professional career, but it also prompts a number of authors to consider the publication in the European field as the goal towards which to focus their efforts and strategies. The general problem of entry is the angle of attack of the second part, which draws on Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of fields to analyse the trajectories of the few African comics authors who managed to achieve a certain legitimation in European environments, namely Congolese Barly Baruti and Pat Masioni and the Ivorian Marguerite Abouet, as well as some other significant paths. The notions of habitus, strategy, periphery, autonomy and heteronomy, but also antinomy have helped to illuminate these paths. The theory of fields, which emphasizes the social conditions relating to the creation, circulation and consumption of symbolic goods and the institutions involved in the "mise en act" of the artistic-cultural object, in order to understand the position in the society of reference, was instrumental in understanding the importance of several factors: the impact of associations and of the international institutions; autonomy as a second step or eventually as a decisive phase, determining the entrance from the beginning; the “instances of legitimation”

Full textThe aim of the study is to characterise the generic features, both linguistic and discursive, of oral scientific research papers. To this end a corpus has been collected and transcribed comprising video recordings of 90 research papers given in english at international scientific conferences in 1993-1994 in the fields of geology, medicine, and physics (30 papers in each field, equally distributed between native and non-native english speakers), and a second, comparative corpus of proceedings papers in physics. The data are strictly controlled for the three variables of mode (oral/written), scientific field, and speaker origin (native/non-native). The approach is ethnographic and constructivist. Computer-aided text analysis reveals that oral scientific discourse exhibits a highly different set of linguistic characteristics from scientific research articles. The variable of mode is shown to exert the greatest influence, but certain features are field-dependent, while others vary as a function of speaker origin. The discourse analysis highlights two key features of the genre : the nature of the claims, and visual communication. The position of conference papers in the life of a fact (between laboratory work and certified knowledge), and the role of question time, leads us to attribute the status of 'proto-claim' to the knowledge claims of this genre. A four-part typology of the visual channel - the scriptovisual pyramid - is proposed and each scientific field shown to have a specific visual profile. Recurrent sequences of visuals are analysed and reveal the existence of field-specific modes of visual argument and of a hierarchy of visuals. It is claimed that in oral scientific papers the visual channel plays an important role in conveying discourse structure to a specialist audience

Full textOur visual system presents some flexibility and experience has been shown to tune it. Early profound deafness and sign language experience can therefore be considered as two potential sources of visual plasticity. The aim of this thesis is to untangle the respective impact of deafness (or auditory deprivation) and sign language experience on peripheral visual field perception and face processing and facial expressions recognition; two crucial mechanisms for sign language communication. Signs are indeed perceived in the lower part of the peripheral visual field and faces provided syntactic, grammatical or affective information to precise or nuances linguistic gestures. A first series of studies explores deafness and sign language experience effects on peripheral visual perception and more particularly in the lower visual space from basic to more complex visual processing. Results suggest that sign language experience in hearing population can affect some aspect of lower visual field processing and that early deafness mainly increase speed of low-level visual processing. The second series of studies explores deafness and sign language experience impact on face processing and more particularly on face recognition and expression recognition. Results suggest a difference in gaze strategy to explore and recognize face in deaf signers supported by a shift in decision-making strategy in both deaf and hearing signers for face recognition. Finally, deafness combined to sign language experience doesn’t seem to affect thresholds for facial expression recognition and categorization. Altogether the results from these six studies provide new insight in our current knowledge about visual perception in early deaf signers and highlight the importance to systematically control sign language experience since its experience can have an impact in both hearing and deaf signers. Key words: Deafness, sign language, visual plasticity, visual periphery, face recognition, facial expression recognition

Full textThis study contributes to understand strategies, initiatives and genuine effects of French language dissemination. It’s set in Chad, a black African space connecting two globalized linguistics communities : the French-speaking world and the Arabic-speaking world. This work aims to investigate dynamics of FLLC as a didactic intervention authority and a sharing place of powers and interests between Chad and France. Chad choppy linguistic and educational context analysis allows understanding the emergence issues of this training system and appraising the influence of the various policies on its evolution. Practical details of dividing out roles between the two states and functionality of didactic triangle are dissected and assessed. Cadence and conditions of FLLC network genuine independence are argued more particularly about the training of teachers. Finally the analysis of the Arabic-speaking learner integration in Chad French-speaking economic and administrative network allows estimating FLLC impact and its social utility for this nation in construction. Data and analysis produced claim to be instructive, pragmatic and useful for the coming development of this original organisation institution

Full textThe objective of my PhD thesis in linguistics is to study the language of chat rooms used on the internet. It involves analyzing the conversations on different communication channels in a contrastive perspective between French, Spanish and Polish. The chat in these three languages constitutes the corpus, the starting point of this work. This research aims at studying the linguistic aspects of the chat in order to propose a definition and to distinguish the coincident features from the divergent ones which have been compared. In the first part, I analyze the socio-historical approach of the chat. In the second part, I describe the relationship between written and oral language, which aims at highlighting the textual character of conversations and, at the same time, their characteristics concerning oral interactions. In the third section, I study the issue of various linguistic features present in the chat. Firstly, I classify the different graphic characteristics, then, I proceed to the lexical analyses of the chat vocabulary taking into account not only slang but also more specific phenomena i. E. Emoticons and acronyms. Finally, I describe the particular syntactic phenomena present in the chat. In conclusion, I answer the issues raised at the beginning of my thesis concerning French, Spanish and Polish linguistic features in the chat and the identity of chat users known through their conversations. I also sum up the universality of the chat communication

Full textLanguage is a social fact, therefore there are less languages than men. Every man cannot speak anything less than a language, therefore every topolect is one. A language has no varieties. Any diversity originates from the interaction among languages and the ceaseless change it gives rise to, resulting in new states of language = languages. The primary community, the inhabited centre, has no topolects, it is linguistically a point ; secondary communities can give rise to more languages (“common languages”). The “linguistic space” is actually a field of force, whose vectors are languages. Relationships between languages are ruled from gravitational laws. Their parameters are the mass of parole, resulting from the release of parole x the width of the audience x the content in the given language ; as well as the distance, that measures exposure. Both bring about the intensity and the direction of attraction. Inter-individual diversity spans the time-line, alongside language change. There are accordingly worldwide, at any moment, about 2 million inhabited centres = 2 million languages >, a terminus ad quem. Absolute identity of two languages does add up to a single language, but it has to be proved each time : we think that it can't, unless within the framework of the global village / the diffuse city. As language is a vector, it is defined by a mathematical quantity-intensity. The interaction of these vectors sketches the linguistic state of the world as well as the forecast of future change. A nine-months field survey in Mali provides us with a test of validation of the model

Full textThis thesis presents the Egyptian literary output of the last three decades through an analysis of the social conditions of production and reproduction of the "writers" (poets, novelists, playwrights, literary critics) as a specific fraction of the national intellectual elite, using mainly the sociological tools developped by Pierre Bourdieu. The introduction recalls how the problematics which still structure the Egyptian literary field were set up during the century of the Nahda. The first part analyses the field's recent evolution from the angle of the external constraints imposed upon it by the field of power (the political and religious authority), the social field (the market) and foreign cultural hegemony (the translation processes). Theses constraints result in a strong normativity, a "realist paradigm" and a literary problematic based on identity. In the same time, the autonomous pole of the field is ruled by a logic of competition and distinction which allows the successive avant-gardes to reintepret and subvert these constraints and further impose the idea of a creation at once "pure" and "engaged" as a superior aesthetic value. The second part deals with this internal dynamics : it analyses the process of definition of a "legitimate field" within the social spaces where literature is being produced, the social hierarchies and symbolic struggles through which this legitimate field is structured, and the careers of some writers belonging to the avant-gardes' successive generations, from Nagib Mahfuz to the young "generation of the nineties"

Full textThe first step of this study is to try an “essay of a theory for the present litérary writing in the french-speaking communities of Africa”. Secondarily, the purpsose was to give another definition, through “another reading”of the african french-speaking literary fact, the nature and the function of the dominated contries literatures. In a historicity perspective, it appeared that the african french –speaking literature, in its all, has been set-up since 1930 in an “autonomous” social word, which general copyrights are principally based on the cultural catégories, knows as the “oral” and “traditional” ones. On a pratical point of view, the oral way and the african oral tradition, far to invariably be the extension of the proclamation of a “negro soul”, are essentially the “ rule of the african literary game”. Subjects of stakes and places of tensions, the oral way and the oral tradition are used by writers of the african field, in their need of structural setting up: the pioneers (Césaire/Senghor) for the maintaining of their “dominant status”; the pretenders (Pacéré/Zadi) for their pretentiousness for the “classicism”. Strategically beneficial and symbolically rich of resources, the oral and the traditional items suffer from all kind of amplifications, of magnifications and extrapolations (speechs relating to the identity, manipulation of the roots and the purity, arguments of the sacred and secret ). In all case , the literary act in Africa or in the french-speaking communities, like the political or economical act is a “calculated act” that the rationality to be hold , needs a perfect knowledge of what has been agreed to call, following the Bourdieu's terminology a “symbolic field” and/or the “african literary field”

Full textSpanning the fields of the sociology of literature and intellectuals, this dissertation studies the Algerian literary field as a bilingual, transnational one, during a period of crisis. It brakes with what I call "methodological monohngualism", as well as moving away from a "methodological nationalism" and a language of "crisis exception". I aim to understand the role of the linguistic issue (French/Arabic, Tamazight also) in writers' political stance during the civil war. We show that the transnational issue is far more decisive than the linguistic one in explaining the stance of writers, even though the civil war became what is sometimes called a "war of languages" within the literary field. Moreover, as many writers had to go into exile, especially in France, we show how this period questions the "national literatures" thesis adopted by some, and its image in the former metropole, between literary universality and a niche market. Finally the thesis sheds light on the relationship between literature and politics, since the literary value of political commitment differs from Algeria to France, and since other categories of intellectual increasingly compete with the figure of the "engaged writer". The empirical research is based on two statistical surveys, a bibliographical one of 1600 literary works published by Algerian writers and a prosopographical one of 174 writers in activity during the 1990s, enabling us to build a Multiple Component Analysis ; the research is also based on approximately 80 semi-structured interviews, archives, the exhaustive study of newspapers and the analysis of literary texts

Full textThe main objective of this research was to examine the interaction between ESL and FSL sixth graders in Quebec and Ontario communicating in a Tandem chat project. More specifically, it aimed to find out if participants provided each other with different types of corrective feedback and whether this feedback led to repair. It also examined how the students viewed this project. The chat sessions took place over four months and involved the completion of 16 tasks (8 in English and 8 in French). The results showed that L2 Grade 6 students provided feedback to their chat partners in 370 instances. The students in both the ESL and FSL exchanges provided three types of feedback: explicit, recasts, and negotiation of form. A major finding is that unlike previous studies involving young learners, the preference was for explicit feedback rather than recasts. In contrast to the Morris’ (2005) study which also involved young learners engaged in chat, the rate of repair was very low. Unlike the FSL students, the great majority of ESL students liked the chat exchange and found it useful not only for learning their L2 but also their L1. The pedagogical implications of this study as well as suggestions for future research are discussed.

Full textPsychoanalysis is first of all the invention of a new profession, and therefore a new dialogue with desire placed as an object. This profession consists in the analyst being taken for the Other, another, then to be abandoned, stripped and sometimes humiliated because life is always a thousand times more beautiful than the austere successive sessions. This leads to misunderstandings, being taken for the other. It's insulting like life can be. It summarizes the couch, there are cries that corne out of the silence and whispers sometimes whispers like those in Bergman, not addressed to the "friend in generations" (Ossip Mandelstam), but to another, that will be found in the scum of the world, past, present and future. The analytic session, with its own performativity, received this vocation, this vocalization which almost restored the short circuit, what an insult, to restore the order of the signifiers that psychosis, which is the answer before the question has reversed. The President Schreber's Luder is this poetic wrench, as Certeau says, the limit between nature and function, this vain hope that is a welling insult like lightning. What is being done by insulting the other if not a caption of strength and scowling back to its origin? The analysis unfolds the contrary, with culture, next to to the necessary politics, this existing drive towards the unknown, this opening against the abysmal myth which is this morbid search for your fixed origin ("your race! "). These twenty chapters are twenty round-tables of Freud, with Rabelais, Judith Butler and àthers examining what is the knowledge of the insult

Full textOriginating from grassroots initiatives, the field of language education for allophone adult migrants has progressively become, in France, more institutionalized and professionalized. Perhaps the most striking recent development in this process is the publication of the French as a Language of Integration reference document (Référentiel Français Langue d’Intégration—FLI) in October 2011. Indeed, the use or non-use of one or another of the lexemes of the “insertion-integration-assimilation” paradigm has been subject to debate within political and everyday discourse since the 1980s. The designation of one of these lexemes thus constitutes a clear statement.Considering the regularly reoccurring debate over the naming of the process by which migrants and society interact, which appertains to various social domains, my research aims at shedding light on the uses of the forementioned paradigm’s lexemes, especially within the institutionalized and professionalized field of migrant language education. My thesis also aims at defining this field’s current organizational and professional structures. From three discursive subgroups, whose speakers occupy distinct social positions (lexicographers, institutional experts, professional language educators), I will highlight the characteristics of their diverse semantic understandings of the paradigm’s lexemes. Notably, the conceptual tools used to conduct my study will be those of discourse analysis. On one side, through lexical discourse analysis that takes into account the characteristics of the studied actors’ real uses of the paradigm’s lexemes, I will identify elements of meaning construction, thereby bringing to light the resulting structuring semantic oppositions and grey areas favouring the emergence of semantic conflicts. On the other hand, I will broaden my analysis to take into account each subgroup’s specificities, which are based on distinct discursive genres, constructing and testifying to the power relationships at play within the field. This thesis therefore lays the foundation for a problematization of the field of allophone migrant language education, both from the point of view of its organization and orientations set by the State as well as that of the needs which emerge from the discourse of educators in terms of initial and continuing education

Full textAimé Césaire is with no doubt the french caribbean poet symbolic of our time. At the crosswords ofworlds, ofcultures discoveringeach others, he never renounced bis black identity, always assumed bis past and history marked by colonization and protested againstall forms ofoppression, suffering and alienation. He is also the one who understood that it is by claiming a singular identity that theBlack man (denied ofits humanity in the past) can reach universality. He overthrows images and stereotypes ofthe Black man andproposes a new model. To the black would-be white writer, he opposes the black man who speaks and knocks down everything : language, codes, syntax and poetry. The aim of our study is to analyse the reception ofthis poetic work qualified as founding and fundamental, subversive and cannibal ;a multidimensional poetry which influenced entire generations ofthinkers, writers. This open work, both popular and scholarly callsfor endless remodelled readings and interpretations as well as explorations of its varions rewritings. That is why it is interesting to focus on the ambivalent relationship, sometimes challenging and full ofrevoit and fascination, between the founding Father and its successors. Full textFounded during the colonial era, the ivorian literature has greatly evolved since 1960. Cote D'Ivoire currently is home to no less than ten publishing houses and world re-known writers such as Dadie, Kourouma, Adiaffi and Tadjo. The ivorian literature in general, and the novel in particular, have mostly focused on authors and their works. As a result, there is a sheer lack of review of the workings of the literary field as a whole. Which makes it utterly important to apply Pierre Bourdieu's sociology of the literary field to the ivorian literature. This study is a novel approach that is more encompassing in that it brings together not only ivorian authors and their writings but also editors, distribution and diffusion outlets and literary critics. The purpose of this study is to highlight the ivorian literary field and stress its peculiar nature as it relates to French Speaking Africa's literary field

Full textThe purpose of this study is to provide a comparative linguistic analysis of the words « État/gosudarstvo » and the notion of State. The objective is to determine common semantic features of the both words. In order to do this, lexical and semantic fields were created. The elaboration of word families allows to compare the French and Russian combinations. Moreover, inspiration was found through cognitive linguistics and through psycholinguistics theory on word association norms. We analyzed the semantic features on comparing various corpus: general dictionaries, associative thesaurus and media texts. This makes it possible to highlight the differences and similarities of the both features and to identify the links between linguistic and extra-linguistic factors

Full textThe dissertation studies the transformations of the legends of two popular Chan masters undergone when turned into full-length vernacular novels during the 17th century. The first part deals with a novel entitled "Expelling the devils and restoring proper social relationships, or the Salvation of the East" (Saomei dunlun dongdu ji), published in Suzhou in 1635. While taking the Chan patriarch Bodhidharma's travels from India to China as its narrative framework, the novel develops in 100 chapters an allegory of moral progress through the strict observance of the five cardinal relationships. The Dhyâna master uses his unique awakening techniques in order to lead stray humans towards moral salvation. The second part focuses on the rewriting process affecting the legend of monk Daoji (Crazy Ji), as apparent in the 1668 novel "The Story of Fermented Dhûta" (Qu toutuo zhuan). This text introduces itself as a critical commentary of earlier versions of the saint's legend, and further turns their themes of Dhyâna masters, with their picturesque ways of teachings, are here portrayed as heralds of Confucian ethics. This characterises the above novels as a peculiar moment in the history of Chinese transformation of Buddhism. The dissertation studies not only the discourse of the novels, but also their publishing story, the identity and purpose of their authors as well as their reception. Both works are shown to have emerged at the meeting point between the two genres of literati novel and moral tract

Full textIn the last years new communicative practices have appeared due to the Computer-Mediated Communication spreading, The impact of this communicative practice in the education field and, specially, in foreign languages learning has meant the incorporation of new methodological proposals in order to take advantage of this communication. This study focuses on linguistic and interaction analyses o synchronous interactions carried out in the different chat rooms of a virtual platform (wwwgalanet. Eu) created to favor Romanic language on line teaching. The main objectives are: first, to offer a detailed description of the Spanish discourse used by second language learning students and, second, to specify what kind of negotiations between native and non-native speakers can help on line Spanish acquisition. Both matters will enable us to create a theoretical guide’s outline of the synchronous written interaction on line. We will specify the competences and strategies that the students must develop in it in order to be efficient in these communicative practices. To achieve these objectives, we have made up a corpus of 55 interactions carried out between 2004 and 2007 in the chat rooms of the Galanet platform (a pedagogical and virtual environment). The analysis perspective used refers to the Computer-Mediated Discourse Analyses as well as to the Interactive Discourse Analyses. Both of them will bring us the necessary tools to define the communicative and linguistic features of this sort of communication, This description will be essential to advance in the study of the chat as a space of communication in our specific field : the didactics of Spanish as a foreign language

The gap between actual and expected use of technology in education prompted an exploration of my suspicions that human thoughts, feelings, and experiences with technology are central to the problem. While many internal factors influence teachers, this study explores the impact Lankshear and Knobel's mindsets have on teachers' decisions to implement digital technologies in education. Specifically I ask how mindsets about knowledge production and technology are mediators of, and mediated by, the activity of literacy teaching and learning in homeschooling environments. I reached over a hundred homeschooling parents through network sampling and a hundred parents submitted a survey designed to place them in one of four quadrants on a grid, assigning them a Mindset 1 rating and Mindset 2 rating. I randomly selected volunteers for each quadrant. I coded and analyzed nineteen interviews according the elements in the Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) heuristic and Lankshear and Knobel's mindsets. Findings indicate that mindsets do mediate technology use in literacy teaching; educators with high Mindset 1 (M1) ratings engage in more traditional educational methods, using technology for enhancing traditional literacy practices. Educators with high Mindset 2 (M2) ratings only implement technology for transformative practices if they also hold a low M1 rating. Regarding transformative use of technology (an M2 outcome), educational institutions must decide whether they want technology to transform instructional processes, literacy outcomes, or products or both.

Full textThis research work is based on an experience with e-mail exchanges between students at Javeriana University, in Bogota, Colombia, who are taking a degree in modern languages and French native speakers. Colombian students were introduced to French students so as to allow each of them to build their own learning approach while communicating with a native speaker. The purpose of this research work is to study the impact of a long-term engagement on the process of mastering a foreign language. This engagement might have a positive impact due to the establishment of an interpersonal relationship between two participants. The research was done over e-mails written in a foreign language: the students were aware of the linguistic and cultural discrepancy and of the need to adjust to each other’s language so that the exchange could be successful. This research study also implies a bilingual dimension since each student knows the language of his/her partner (Spanish – French). We carried out a conversational study taking into account the messages exchanged by all the pairs of the corpus. Our attention was focused on the interactional dimension of the exchange and on the use of communication and learning strategies by the participants to reach mutual understanding and the mastering of the linguistic elements of the foreign language. The results show that relational factors such as establishing closer links and being committed improve the quality of the exchange. Besides, the study of the strategies shows that observable attitudes in both learning the language and transmitting knowledge might occur for a small sample of learners
