Abstract:
The chakra system consists of seven energetic vortexes ascending up the spine that connect to every aspect of human existence. These vortexes become blocked and unblocked through the course of a life, these openings and closings have physiological and mental repercussions. Knowledge of these physical and mental manifestations, indicate where the chakra practitioner is in need, the practitioner can then manipulate their mind and body to create a desired outcome. These manipulations are based upon physical exercises and associative meditations for the purpose of expanding the human experience. As a poem can be thought of as the articulation of the human experience, and the chakra system can be thought of as a means to understand and enhance that experience, it is interesting and worthwhile leap to explore the how the chakras can develop and refresh the way we read and write poetry. This critical preface closely reads seven poems, one through each chakra, finding what the chakras unveil. Here, each chakra is considered for its dynamic creative capabilities and for its beneficial potentiality in the reading and writing process, finding each chakra provides tools: idea generators with the potential to free the poet from usual patterns of creativity while broadening vision and expressivity. In this collection of poetry poems are experiences chopped into consumable units that show and tell the constant negotiation between what is actually happening and the stories we tell ourselves about what is happening.

Abstract: The overall objective of this research is to study the phenomenon of subtle human physiology, or human multidimensional anatomy (Gerber, 1988), and the specific objective is to observe whether the perception of this physiology is possible through the practice of Yoga. For the Yoga the human being consists of subtle energy structures called Chacras, Nadis and Koshas. The research is in the field of Phenomenology (Moreira, 2002), and addresses some topics aimed at understanding the phenomenon of human subtle energy. A field research, qualitative character, where they were organized two groups of practice of Hatha Yoga along the search. To measure the perception of the participants, we used questionnaires, observations in the field journal, student annotations on drawings they produced, and even his spontaneous reports that occurred at the end of practice. Was held the thematic analysis of the data collected (Bardin, 2011), which were compared with unusual perceptions that occur during meditation and that are described by Kornfield (1993). It was observed that the participants of the field research had some awareness of subtle body structures.

This investigation into embodied female spirituality clearly required an approach which was able to holistically engage all human faculties - different aspects of mind, body, spirit, intuition and memory. Consequently it was essential to use my creative practice as an integrative aspect of the research. I have used my creative practice across health and healing, Sufi processes and light based media to investigate, develop and practice 'embodied female spirituality'. A shamanic-performance paradigm and feminism have been central, philosophically, to the study. In addition I have chosen to explicate the connections between these discourses of the body, the text and the imagery through my own story, my autobiography. The methodology involves two research strategies; the use of creative practice as research and the use of autobiography as a research tool. The creative practice can be seen as a continuum of modalities, extending from the private to the public. Three dimensions of the practice will be discussed. The following is a description of the dimension of a typical session in (1) a body-based natural therapy treatment I deliver (2) a group-body-based Sufi session I deliver and (3) a brief outline of the approach I have taken to the research within light based media and a list of the works.

Abstract:
This dissertation explores the integration of Thai traditional music in Chakra, for wind band, by Narong Prangchareon. Nipat Kanchanahud explores how Narong, inspired by Eastern philosophy, integrates elements of Thai traditional music and the types, styles, scales, and dialects of Thai culture with the formal elements of Western music and the instrumentation of the Western wind band. Chakra uniquely spans Eastern and Western cultures, creating a new musical language for both worlds to appreciate and enjoy. Further, the composition richly demonstrates the viability of the wind band as an international medium. The orchestration of Chakra reveals Narong’s musical lineage from Edgard Varèse through Chen Yi. A conductor’s guide, included with this dissertation, is designed to aid and encourage performances of Chakra throughout the world.

Abstract:
Religion
Ph.D.
The intention of this project is to make a case for the cakras by finding their place in contemporary discourse. The assumption that allows for this project is that the structure and context of the cakras as psycho-physical phenomenon are not sufficiently established in scholarship. The method employed is to illuminate the cakras, which are primarily addressed as historical/textual entities, as phenomenological and psychological entities. This will be done through the phenomenology of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and the additions to his depiction of the lived body as per YUASA Yasuo, who introduces the “unconscious quasi-body” (i.e., the subtle body) as a level of the body of which one may become aware. The cakras will also be presented as that which function similarly to psychological entities, introducing the depth psychology and commentary of C.G. Jung. By doing so, the human component of the cakras will be drawn out of historical/textual matters and into the lived experience of the human body where they may become the subject of phenomenological and psychological analysis. Through arguing for the addition of these standpoints, future dialog with other disciplines, especially contemporary cakra practitioners, may be facilitated.

This research geopolitics of zulus has for subject the place and history of zulu for shaka to the new south africa. The differents representations and view of zulus territories are presented ans analysed. But these representations are only the translation of the south africa's imbroglio. Each actor wants to lay down his view. This work presents and relate history and fresco of zulus. Shaka and his conquests war against britannic, bambate rebellion. . . Abstract:
Creating a sense of place; a meaningful urban landscape has been one of the great challenges of the contemporary built world. Urban fabric once molded and sanctified by religion, myth, and subtle forces, is presently understood through formal and functional issues. This thesis contends that an important part of the experience of place is through understanding the landscape as a part of a greater narrative of spiritual or energetic significance. In a contemporary context, this can be engaged through the conception of the human body. The human body has held a special role with regards to the built world. We assess the world with the aid of our physical bodies and our relationship to space is shaped by the understanding of ourselves as psychological and spiritual creatures. Currently, North American culture is undergoing great change in the comprehension of the body. This includes a reality where the energetic or subtle body is recognized as a valid element of human existence and an inherent mind-body connection is being supported by advances in the world of science. There is also an increasing awareness that the divide between human beings and the natural environment is detrimental to both physical and mental health. The city of Toronto is in a period of redefinition and this new interest in the human condition can play a central role in the development of the city fabric. Its main civic avenue, University Avenue, becomes the site for an urban project guided by respect for the physical, energetic and cyclical nature of the human being. A network of public spaces is created that allows people to reconnect to the city as a part of a narrative of body, energy, and the cycles of the natural world.

Abstract:
A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Science, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science. Johannesburg, 2018
The morphological variation between populations is shaped by adaptive responses to prevailing environmental conditions and/or not adaptive stochastic effects. Within-population variation is mainly related to age and sexual dimorphism, as well as temporal and spatial variation in environmental conditions. The aim of this study was to investigate patterns of variation in the skull, mandibles, and dentition in a population of the African four-striped mouse Rhabdomys dilectus chakae. Geometric morphometrics was used to assess the variation related to allometry and age, sexual dimorphism, and the inter-annual variation between specimens collected in different years (1975, and 1994-1997). A review of the literature on the application of geometric morphometrics to rodent morphological variation was conducted and landmark morphometrics were concluded to be the most appropriate methods for the skull and the mandible analyses, with a separate analysis using landmarks and semi-landmarks to analyse the variation of mandibular curves, and outline morphometrics with an Elliptic Fourier analysis of the upper molars. Images of the skull (ventral and lateral view at 5x magnification), mandible (at 6.8x magnification), and the three left upper molars (at 10.5x magnification) were captured using a stereoscopic microscope. Landmarks were digitized on the skull and mandible images, with semi-landmarks digitized on mandible images, and outlines were digitized on molars. Multivariate analysis of variance was used to analyse shape and size variation due to age, sex, and year of sampling and a multivariate regression was used to analyse allometry. A PCA was used to visualize shape variation, and boxplots of log-centroid size to visualize size variation between age classes, sexes, and years of sampling. Shape variation was significantly predicted by age and year of sampling, while size was significantly predicted by age, sex, and year of sampling. Size significantly contributed to shape variation, although size alone did not appear to explain much of the variation present. Most age-related variation in shape was due to differences between the first three age classes and age class IV, while size increased with increased age (i.e. growth). Males were larger than females although no sexual shape dimorphism was evident between sexes. Typical of species with male-male competition, Rhabdomys dilectus chakae demonstrated sexual size dimorphism; larger males have greater mating opportunities. Specimens from 1994 and 1997 had more variable shapes and were consistently smaller than those collected in 1975, 1995 and 1996, except for dentition where these latter specimens were smaller than those collected in 1994 and 1997. Annual variation in morphology may be a plastic response to prevailing local climatic conditions (i.e. rainfall and temperature), Masters Dissertation Candice Neves iv resulting in annual variation in diet, affecting the skull and dentition. Further studies should consider more populations in the species to assess the generalizability of the findings, particularly annual variation, and to consider spatial variation across the distribution of a population.

This study uses the author’s “journey” of experiencing the Chakra dance to explore two main purposes: First, the self-discovery and awareness of my body and mind; Second, how participation in Chakra dance changes the author’s life. This study used self-narrative qualitative method to record the author’s experience in participating an eight-week Chakra dance program: Muladhara Chakra - dance of the earth, Swadhisthana Chakra – dance of feelinge, Manipura Chakra – dance of warriors, Anahata Chakra - dance of light and love, Visuddha Chakra - dance of expression, Ajna Chakra - dance of intuition, Sahasrara Chakra – dance of spirituality and the final seven chakras party. This study presents the author’s changes of body and mind through the chakra dance experience, as well as reviewing and understanding the author’s life journey. The changes in the perception of the body, the flow of physical body, attitude, imagination, self-acceptance, insight, intimate relationship, and perspective of life in general were recorded in detail. Finally, the author made some suggestions and recommendation to both the public service workers and researchers for future studies.

Vassilatos, Ellas Alexia. "The transculturation of Thomas Mofolo's Chaka : Southern Africa and francophone Africa in dialogue." Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10539/5694.

Full text
Abstract:
Thomas Mofolo’s novel Chaka was a key contributor to Shaka’s mythical status. This thesis attempts to demonstrate the significance of this work in light of the author’s intellectual education and development by the Paris Evangelical Mission Society in Lesotho and the subsequent exploitation of the novel by Léopold Sédar Senghor. In the figure of Shaka, whom Senghor posed as an intellectual challenge to the imperial cultural assumptions of the colonising powers, the Senegalese author created one of Négritude’s most powerful symbols. Following Senghor, a succession of Francophone African versions of Mofolo’s story imbued the Zulu king with each author’s cultural and political idiosyncrasies. These versions offered entirely new texts, which performed the simultaneous acts of deculturation and neoculturation of Mofolo’s novel and Shaka/Chaka’s life. Traditionally, Anglophone and Francophone African literary cultures have been treated as separate intellectual spheres. This thesis seeks to understand the dialogue between them, and examines the evolving narrative of their cultural exchanges through the ‘transculturation’ of Mofolo’s Chaka.

Chaka, Phillip Mpho. "Public relations in national-building : a participatory development communication perspective for South Africa / Phillip Mpho Chaka." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/15776.

Full text
Abstract:
The goal of the study was to advance a participatory development communication perspective for South Africa and suggest how the government can facilitate the country's democratisation by using government PR as a strategic planning tool and developing a government communication framework for nation-building by integrating PR approaches into the communication component of constructing national identity, social cohesion and Nation-building programmes. The primary orientation of this study is interdisciplinary combining a theoretical framework of the concept of the 'nation', the discursive construction of national identity and major debates surrounding the practice of nation-building. In addition to the background on South Africa's history and the current social, political and economic climate, this study applies critical discourse analysis to the role that PR contributes to the advancement of government communication programmes in South Africa. The aim was to explore the role played by PR within the democratic nation-building processes in South Africa and identify which discourses have been and are being mobilised in constructing South African national identity in the context of the young South African democracy and the nation as a whole. The final analysis demonstrates that while Presidential speeches promote hope, unity and citizen participation, they also portray South African citizens as united but diverse individuals whose primary responsibility is to celebrate the country's political transformation and demonstrate loyalty to the post-apartheid goals of nation-building. Furthermore, critical events like the 1994 general elections and major sporting events like the 1995 Rugby World Cup, as well as the 2010 FIFA soccer World Cup are seen as milestone moments in the history of the nation. A mixed-methods approach was used in the study, with qualitative and quantitative research methodologies complementing each other. Various domains of enquiry were used in the research. On the one hand there was a theoretical analysis and appraisal of the PR role in nation-building and Critical discourse analysis of Presidential speeches as a possible instrument for the facilitation of direct democracy. These were complemented by empirical evidence obtained from research participants with a view to reaching conclusions about the research problem. The study analysed interview variation in the constructions of themes according to the different positions people were responding from and also examined the meanings given in relation to Nation-building, national identity and social cohesion. The findings provide examples of an emphasis on the civic dimension of national identity, with speakers emphasising the rights and duties of South African citizenship. But more prominent was a discourse that goes beyond a formal, legalistic civic identity to include a more emotional, semi-cultural bond such as 'unity in diversity' and the 'Rainbow Nation' discourse. The study concludes by recommending that in order to anchor the democratic Nation-building with in the country, the government: should use PR to communicate with the citizenry and keep them in the loop about these adjustments; promote the country's Nation-building process by acknowledging that PR has a critical strategic planning function to cement national unity and develop a shared democratic national identity for South Africa.

Chaka, Matsiliso Merriam. "An evaluation of the effectiveness of the audit committee in the Westonaria Local Municipality / Matsiliso Merriam Chaka." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/10847.

Full text
Abstract:
Audit committees are an integral part of good corporate governance and their establishment strengthens the credibility of governments. As a foundation of good governance, audit committees are positioned to provide an objective assessment of whether or not public resources are responsibly and effectively managed. They also promote accountability and integrity, as well as improvement in the operations of governments and municipalities. The establishment of audit committees in the local sphere of government came with the advent of modernisation in terms of the budget and financial management, which was intended to strengthen accountability. The requirement for effective utilisation of resources by local government is critical for the support and empowerment of local communities and delivery of effective services. The audit committee framework for local government, which is provided by the Municipal Finance Management Act (56 of 2003), is underpinned by principles of good governance and accountability, which promote the effective functioning of audit committees. However, there are perceptions and arguments advanced in the literature regarding the effectiveness of audit committees as an accountability structure. This was brought about by the recurring reported incidences of the failure of businesses, which took place despite the existence of rules and laws regulating the function. As a result, trends of leading best practices were established, which enhanced audit committees' performance and were adopted as a proxy for the measurement of audit committees’ effectiveness. The focus of the study is on validating the perception by management that the audit committee of the Westonaria Local Municipality (WLM) is effective in the execution of its oversight role. A literature study on the functioning of audit committees have been undertaken, official municipal documents were analysed and a questionnaire has been developed and utilised as a means for gathering data, in order to prove the hypothesis to be either true or false. The areas investigated in this study demonstrate that the audit committee of WLM is generally effective in the execution of its oversight function. The findings of the study also identified certain areas in the audit function which require the attention of both management and the audit committee of the municipality. More specifically, the observations made in the study include the following: (i) that audit committee members are not provided with the agendas and reports in sufficient time for them to adequately prepare for meetings; (ii) that a productive relationship between the audit committee and the management of the local government has to be maintained; (iii) that there is a lack of informal meetings between the audit committee and the external and internal auditors; (iv) that no appropriate training of the audit committee on existing and potential audit risks in local government is in place; (v) that there is an absence of continuous learning programmes for the members of the audit committee; and (vi) that audit committee members do not evaluate themselves in terms of their level of knowledge regarding the functioning and activities of their audit committee. Attending to these aspects, as identified through this study, will further improve the audit committee’s activities in the WLM. These aspects are therefore not viewed in a negative light, but are rather regarded as a positive venture to be addressed by municipal management and the audit committee, in order to improve the functioning of the audit committee. These aspects should therefore be added to the many positives aspects that are identified concerning the WLM audit committee, as discussed in this study.
