Abstract:
Work chair is considered as an important element for the users to improve comfort in work environment. An ergonomic chair design and engineering is therefore considered very important for its usability and comfort view of point for the users. The aim of the thesis is to improve the mobility and ergonomics of the existing chair in all aspects. Ergonomically designed chairs are important for long time seated workers to increase their productivity and also to reduce low back injuries which arise due to the poor design chairs in ergonomic aspects. In addition, ergonomically designed chairs help to increase the seating comfortability of the chair users. QFD and waterfall model was followed for the work execution. In this paper, we discuss a design of an ergonomically efficient chair with simple adjustments which gives more comfortability. This will give us a better likelihood to stay in a neutral position. The Ergonomics of the chair is improved in various steps. This thesis focuses on many ideas in which some of them are implemented and evaluated.

Korte, Janice. "South African anthropometric dimensions for the design of an ergonomic office chair." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1006046.

Full text
Abstract:
Office chairs are becoming a modern status symbol in the workplace. Many individuals are seated on office chairs for most of the working day. As a result of using poorly designed chairs injury and discomfort are frequently experienced, most particularly lower back pain. Correct design of chairs is imperative, and must be user-centered. The aim of this investigation has been to gather anthropometric dimensions characteristic of the South African population, as this information has not been widely assimilated to date. Once collated, this information could be used in the design of an ergonomically correct office chair, suitable for the unique characteristics of the South African working population. Anthropometric dimensions were collected from 683 South Africans (comprising 448 South African females and 235 South African males) from pre-selected companies in major centres in South Africa (Johannesburg, Pietermaritzburg, Durban, East London, Grahamstown, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town). Measurements included participants’ personal information (age, sex, home language and ethnic group), basic anthropometric measures (stature, shoulder height, mass, and waist and hip circumference) as well as specific measures of fit of the individual to the specially designed, adjustable chair. Of the 448 females, 317 were Black females, 77 were White females, 35 were Coloured females and 19 were Indian/Asian females. Of the 235 males, 112 were Black males, 79 were White males, 26 were Coloured males and 18 were Indian/Asian males. Office chair dimensions for each ethnic group were represented and differences were noted. A comparison between a current office chair’s dimensions and the South African sample office chair’s dimensions indicated modifications that would need to be constructed to suit the South African sample. The conventional office chair is still the most widely accepted office chair due to its stability and support structures that maintain the correct sitting posture of the user. An ergonomic office chair needs to incorporate anthropometric dimensions worldwide.

Gallagher, Judith. "A Study of Department Chairs in Two-Year Colleges: A Comparison of the 1992 International Community College Chair Survey to Department Chairs in the North Texas Community College Consortium." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2003. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc4329/.

Full text
Abstract:
A study was conducted to gather information from department chairs serving in the 26 two-year colleges that are members of the North Texas Community College Consortium using the International Community College Chair Survey (ICCCS). The ICCCS is designed to gather insights into four aspects of the chairs' professional lives: personal characteristics, responsibilities challenges, and strategies. The study compared the demographic data and the respondents' perceptions of the challenges their units will face in the next 5 years to the original survey conducted in 1992. The regional sample included 616 first-line administrators, and a 30.5% response rate was achieved. The demographic distribution of the regional respondents shows significant shifts in gender, age, education, experience and release time but constancy in race and stability of the population. Similarities between the two samples exist regarding the challenges of maintaining program quality, providing technology, and managing financial issues. The regional sample expresses greater concern about the challenges of distance education, external accountability, and student matters.

Korach, Rachel Mae. "A Comparative Study of Perceptions of High School Department Chairs and High School Teachers on the Role of the High School Academic Department Chair: the Voice of the Teacher-department Chair." PDXScholar, 1996. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/1254.

Abstract:
The purpose of this descriptive study was to examine and compare perceptions between high school department chairs and teachers regarding the role of the high school academic department chair in Oregon, a position which has been largely ignored in recent educational reform efforts. Schools selected for the study were limited to those sharing the same qualities of size and structure as those of the high schools in the researcher's own district. A researcher-constructed questionnaire defining 44 activities comprising five categories of department chair responsibility provided data from 118 high school department chairs and 114 teachers from 34 Oregon high schools. Respondents addressed three issues: (a) definition-perceptions of what the role of the high school department chair looks like in practice; (b) clarification-perceptions of which activities are most important to the role; and (c) extension-perceptions of which activities are most important for the department chair to continue to improve in carrying out the role. Results of this study show teachers' expectations for the role of the department chair to be substantially different from those of the chairs themselves. Chi-square testing revealed statistically significant (R < .05) incongruence of perceptions between department chairs and teachers for 21 of the 44 activities across all five of the categories of department chair responsibility. Department chairs consistently perceived themselves to devote more time to their role than teachers perceived chairs to spend. Teachers placed more importance than did chairs on protection of instructional time and support of teachers' professional needs and concerns. Statistically significant differences in perception between males and females in the study population were also found for 24 of the 44 activities. Females consistently valued more highly than did males those department chair activities that reflect a facilitative, collaborative approach to leadership. Greater percentages of males more highly valued management activities than did females. These findings suggest both ambiguity in role definition and incongruence of role expectations to be obstacles to effective role performance for the high school department chair. Open, focused dialogue is suggested as a means for resolving these contradictions.

Abstract:
Ethno-entertainment is a term that makes apparent the merger of entertainment and science in the depiction of the Native presence in film. This approach to filmmaking is assessed and is determined to be defunct. Experiential-education filmmaking is offered as an alternative approach. It is suggested that Native science can inform this approach in a way that allows a contextual understanding of Native language and culture. My video thesis work, K'anecho'xdekdiigh- I'm Not Going to Teach You, is suggested as an example of how the prominence of Native science may promote survivance rather than perpetuate ethno-entertainment's focus on absence.

Jönsson, Johanna. "Ergonomi : vikten av rätt sittande." Thesis, Växjö University, School of Technology and Design, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:vxu:diva-1231.

Full text
Abstract:

The science of ergonomic means the human in work, which also can be defined as the combination between the human and the working tools. With this as a background it proves that there are high demands on the chairs that are meant for work. The chair is supposed to complement the user to reach an optimal ergonomic sitting.

The purpose of this report is to give an insight in the ergonomic sitting and how workchairs are designed. Ergonomics means that one way to reach an ergonomic sitting is with an open hip angle, which brings out a dynamic sitting. The dynamic sitting gives the user an active sitting. This can partly be achieved through a sitting like the principle for the balance chair. To further achieve a good sitting there are laws that contents the work environment, which controls the sitting on workplaces.

Abstract:
This project was carried out using a product development process for Mitab, a furniture manufacturer in Tranås. The company mainly produce products for public spaces. RAL is a chair in their collections and it is designed mainly for public spaces. There is a need to assemble the chairs with each other at different context. The purpose of this project was to develop a link between the chair seats.   The main focus of the project was to come up with drawings and pictures that visualizes a solution to link RAL-chairs together.   The project started with Mitabs need to join a specific chair model, laterally together. This need generated questions and a product development process was performed to finally result in a production friendly product.   Inspiration and knowledge acquired through studying literature, observation of product development at the company, as well as visits to the furniture fair in Älvsjö. Interviews and tests were used in order to gather information about the problem. Several concepts were developed and evaluated together with the company.   Combining functionality with a design that is compatible with the chair's design as well as a simple and clear design has been the purpose of this project. The result is a coupling seat that is hidden under the seat, and that is easy to use.   The result was a concept of linking chairs together. The coupling is hidden under the chair seat when it is not in use. Plastic and steel was chosen as material and a prototype was produced which shows the form and function of the developed concept.   The resulting drawings has led to a prototype. This prototype meets the requirements Mitab has presented at the start of the project. A cost estimate based on the concept note has been submitted and the total production cost of the chair coupling is far below the company's cost requirements.   Work that remains is to test the prototype and evaluate the sustainability of the product and to evaluate any load requirements. Further detailed cost estimations should be done to obtain a more accurate pricing.

Abstract:

The aim of this project is to develop an auxiliary office chair, which favorably will compete with

the existing chairs on the market. Evolutions of ergonomical survey in the work environment and

on the configuration of offices require new products which fulfill the requirements properly.

In order to achieve it a survey about office chairs has been carried out: types, characteristics, ways

of usage and products on the market besides a large antropometrical study and ergonomics related

to work area study.

The result is an auxillary office chair which improves significatively in ergonomics compared with

such chairs found in the market survey.

Moreover it is achieved a great improvement refering to apilability stackable characteristics and

manufacturing, as this chair has good features as easily cleanning and innovative aesthetics and no

high manufacturing cost. That means an easily marketed product.

Full text
Abstract:
This play is a comedy which revolves around the importance of a French Chair (Louis Xiii) in the life of a family. A young newlywed woman discovers that her husband has a "secret" half sister born out of wedlock. Her mother-in-law has had an affair with a French man, but her husband always believed she had been abused. The young lady senses something is not clear and decides to look for her "half" sister-in-law. She does and manages to organize a get-together to bring everyone in the same place and finally understand what really happened. Eventually, her mother-in-law, now a widower, falls in love again with her ex-lover and they decide to marry. The French Chair was a reason of fights in the young couple and with the mother-in-law. But at the end we learn that young lady's half sister-in-law was conceived on this chair.

Abstract:
This is a master’s thesis project of 30 credits written with guidance from the Swedish research institute ICT Viktoria and Industrial Ecology at KTH. This thesis is conducted by two students at KTH, one with a background in Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Ecology and the other with a background in Energy and Environmental Technology. This study focuses on circular economy linked to the furniture industry in Sweden and how the transition from theoretical to practical concepts can be improved. The methods of this thesis consist of three semi-structured interviews, a survey and an analytical comparative literature review. The interviews, survey and literature review is analyzed with the purpose of finding important criteria relevant for office chairs in circular business models. The interviews are performed face-to-face with three different key persons; an office supply manager, a CEO at a refurbishing company and a product manager. The study focuses on product design within the Swedish furniture industry although some aspects regarding circular business models, logistics and psychological values are included. The results are design criteria for office chairs in circular business models and a design evaluation program for the industry built on these. The program, based on multi criteria analysis, can help reduce the gap between theory and practice of how circular economy should be implemented in the industry. By giving early feedback during the design phase on how well an office chair and a company’s structure meet circular economy criteria the authors hope to ease and speed up this transition. The main characteristics of an office chair designed for circular business models are: Durable Easy to service Adaptable Modular Homogeneous material composition in modules Although the transition to circular business models can be a comprehensive process the authors believe that if furniture manufacturers would integrate circular business models for office chairs into their business structure this would be both economically viable and highly beneficial for their environmental profile which can strengthen their position on the market.

Shu, Chi-Kou. "Computing exact approximations of a Chaitin omega number." Thesis, University of Auckland, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/2292/38.

Full text
Abstract:
A Chaitin Omega number, Ω, is the halting probability of a universal Chaitin (self-delimiting Turing) machine. Every Ω number is both computably enumerable and random. In particular, every Ω number is non-computable. In this thesis, we describe a method to compute the exact values of the first 64 successive bits of a natural Chaitin Omega number. We first describe a model of computation which has been defined and proved to be a universal Chaitin machine U. We then propose a method (procedure) which combines iterative executions of an algorithm with mathematical analysis to get the exact values of the first successive 64 bits of the corresponding Chaitin ΩU number of U. This particular defined Chaitin machine U is essentially a register machine and has been implemented in Java. We call it the canonical compressed model (or compressed model) as it allows only ‘canonical’ program strings to be processed in U. Thus, many input strings which are illegal, hence useless, are ignored and never involved in the computational process. In addition, the compressed design shortens the length of all instructions so that relatively short strings now contain somewhat complex programs. A simulator for U, written in Java, is a primary part of the project. The algorithm is executed iteratively, computing step by step an increasing sequence of rational numbers (in binary) to approximate Ω U. In the n-th step, the algorithm produces four main output files: all halting strings, looping strings, run-time errors, and prefix strings (incomplete programs). In each step, all prefix strings (of the previous step) are read and processed one by one. Each string is extended by 7 bits (ASCII code representations for symbols) to generate new strings that are examined one by one to detect any lexical, syntactic, semantic, or run-time error in each of them. Any of those strings with an error detected is discarded to save storage space and execution time. We solve the Halting Problem for all programs for U of length less than or equal to 84 bits so we can calculate an increasing sequence of exact approximations converging to ΩU. By means of a mathematical analysis the first successive 64 bits, 0000001000000100000110001000011010001111110010111011101000010000 of the 84 bits are proved to be the exact first bits of ΩU. Actually, more bits can be obtained by this procedure if the disk space is sufficient for it to go on, but this procedure cannot be extended indefinitely. In order to assure that our computing result is correct, we have proved that all input strings of length less than or equal to 84 executed in U over 100 steps are not halting programs.* *This dissertation is a compound document (contains both a paper copy and a CD as part of the dissertation). Abstract:
The role of the department chairs is essential in higher education. Hence, determining the sources of their stressors as well as clarifying the ways these stressors impact their lives could be helpful in identifying solutions that make chairs more efficient both personally and professionally. A three-stage Delphi methodology was used for this study to explore the top stressors that department chairs (4 women, 16 men) across different disciplines at one Canadian university experience and the ways these stressors influence their personal and professional lives. The findings of the study revealed 18 categories of stressors. Among all these categories, the five with the highest level of agreement between department chairs were examined in detail. The top five stressors were: "Personal time for research", "Deadlines", "Task demands", "Time pressure", and "Centralization". These stressors were found to impact the chairs' personal and professional lives adversely. Awareness about stress factors that decrease the efficiency of chairs at work and their satisfaction at home can inform the planning and implementation of initiatives to counter the negative influence of the stressors on department chairs and the whole university as a system.

Abstract:

Abstract:
A chair was designed and built through exploration of material and form. Cardboard was chosen as the main material to create the chair. Initially it was paired with concrete and a first study was developed. Cardboard and concrete as materials were too different and did not support each other. Failures in the design and material were noted which informed the next steps of the thesis. Rather than stacking the cardboard, I implemented a quarter iso-grid that required less cardboard, could create more complex forms, and was also able to interface more effectively with other materials. A chair form was designed to be tested. Ultimately, two materials were chosen to compliment the cardboard quarter iso-grid. In the first chair a fiberglass skin was used to cover the cardboard, providing lightweight structural support. The second chair used steel in place of fiberglass. Sections of the cardboard were replaced with steel. The two versions of the chair each had their strengths and weaknesses. The fiberglass was lightweight, strong, and smooth, however it was difficult to work with and the cardboard became less apparent as a part of the chair. On the other hand the steel fit into the quarter iso-grid as a rib element similar to the cardboard making the quarter iso-grid and cardboard more apparent. The steel suffered in strength due to the notches necessary for the quarter iso-grid and had to be reinforced.

Abstract:
The main purpose of this multidisciplinary research is to define and assess the concept of “cybereroticism”. This notion is of such significance in the « virtual body » representation that it now seems possible to consider it an emblematic figure of the way the body is implicated in the contemporary field. Our method, combining aesthetics, cultural studies and psychoanalysis, is set up in three steps. First of all, we will provide a database highlighting the conceptual framework, which will allow us to create the initial terms of reference. In order to achieve this, we will provide a corpus of serious movies reflecting a spontaneous approach of this topic, mainly eXistenZ, Demonlover, The Cell and The Lawmmower Man. A second database will be achieved by observing video games, including pornographic and hentai games, in order to identify the conditions of the experience in its current state. Lastly, we will demonstrate how the persistence of the themes of violence and sadism, as well as the abandon of the body, its renewal or its reconfiguration, refer ultimately to anguish as a key aspect of the experience. This research hypothesis will eventually represent the last part of this thesis

Abstract:

Grady, Malcolm Robert. "The role of the chair of governors in school governance : a view from the chair." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/351.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the introduction of Local Management of Schools(LMS) as a result of the 1988 Education Reform Act (ERA),the role of the school governing body has evolved and been refined by successive legislative acts and consequent regulations. In recognition of this development, governing bodies have been the subject of a number of research studies eg Kogan et al (1984), Earley (1994), Deem et al (1995) and Scanlon et al (1999), all examining a range of themes from role and context, composition and early development, citizenship and effectiveness. Suchr esearchp rovides the context for this study into the role of the Chair of a school governing body. Other than Esp and Saran (1995), Sheam et al (1995) and Scanlon et al (1999), little research has been conducted into the role of the Chair. It is the contention of this study that, through incremental legislative acts, statutory instruments, circulars and other official DfEE documentation, the role of the Chair has become central not only to the workings of the governing body but also central to the operation of school governance as seen through the eyes of the DfEE. This position has, however, not been a planned progression of deliberate steps but an unplanned incremental development. The Chair of governors, it is argued here, has emerged as a"key player" in the operation of school governance. The research was conducted in four LEAs in the North East of England using a number of research instruments which included a questionnaire, semi-structured interviews, diary recording, recorded observations and documentation analysis. The questionnaire was sent to all Chairs of governors in three LEAs - Northshire, Newshire and Sunshire. The sample was 320 and the response rate was 43%. The interviews were conducted with twelve Chairs in three LEAs with the author's LEA of Southshire replacing Sunshire. Three interviews were also conducted with the Governor Training Co-ordinators in three LEAs in the region. Eight Chairs of governors were invited to record a structured diary for a period of four weeks and six Chairs did so. Three governing body meetings in the author's LEA were observed and recorded using an observation schedule. Finally, in addition to the close scrutiny of all legislative acts since 1980 with regard to education and school governance and other official documentation, minutes of meetings of school governing bodies in Southshire for the academic year 1998-99 were examined. The findings from this localised study show that the Chairs' perceive themselves as "key players", with the Head teacher, in the operation of school business. This is supported by factors such as the amount of time spent by Chairs on school business, their role in the committee structure of governing bodies, their working relationships with Heads and the routes of contact to the WEE and LEA. Whilst pressures continue to grow and the pace of change quickens, Chairs feel that they are able to cope. Evidence of tensions in the relationships between Chair and Head were found to be less than expected and where they did exist, they were largely as a result of difficult inter-personal relationships rather than policy differences. The research also shows a lack of formal and informal contact between Chairs. There is no self-supporting network at local, regional or national level. Chairs' acknowledged the importance of training but were willing to demote its priority in the face of other factors eg budgets. Chairs did not access training for themselves. The research concludes with the need to re-assess the role of the Chair in the light of the key functions now allocated to the position by legislation and the growing significance the position has in the operation of effective school governance.

Abstract:
Tuscany keeps a group of four pulpits, sculpted between 1260-1310 by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, which are known as the greatest Italian gothic sculpture masterpieces. Those monuments have been dismembered and the subsequent restaurations have lost part of the original meaning, as the order of the figures has been forgotten. The present study tries to look for the logic that ties all figures within a coherent and unificated signification. It begins with a recall of the liturgical principles on which the pulpit is built, as the monuments exist as an active part of the christian ritual before they're considered as works of art. The analysis of the production of pulpits on a larger geographical and historical scale is also useful to observe with a better accuracy the originality of the Pisani's work. .

Full text
Abstract:
The driver’s environment in todays trucks is being continually improved to increase the drivers comfort and safety. One of the most influencing factors of the driving experience is the driver’s chair. The purpose of this master thesis was to continue the development of a new driver’s chair, based on a pilot study and a number of patents from Scania CV AB. The aim of this development was to create one or several concept chairs, ready for further prototyping and analysis. The concept(s) were to be constructed using CAD software, thus verifying dimensions and functions. Beyond this, the concept(s) were to be calculated and simulated for structural integrity during a crash. A product development process divided into three phases, information gathering, concept development and construction, was used. During the first phase, information was collected with the purpose of increasing subject knowledge, identifying user demands and mapping out useable technologies. In the second phase, product development, a product specification was created and idea solutions were generated. Eight pilot concepts were created from the generated ideas. The concepts were transformed into CAD mock-ups, verifying movement patterns and secondary functions. Finally, the concepts were evaluated and selected with the aid of quantitative evaluation methods. The selected concept differed somewhat from the patents, but kept the same basic method of chair suspension. These differences were caused by forced adaptations of the concept structure to conform to product specifications. In the third phase, mechanical construction was performed in parallel with a master thesis aiming to simulate and verify crash testing of the concept. An iterative loop between construction and simulation was set up to quickly create a robust chair frame. With the frame properly designed and evaluated, the chair’s secondary functions could be designed and applied. The resulting concept was deemed to have the potential to conform to product demands, in some cases outperforming the current chair models. The biggest advantages of the concept were increased safety due to the sturdy frame, a suspension independent of chair settings and a potentially lower weight. One specific demand was that the concept must be able to fit in all of the cabs in Scanias cab range. Concessions and trade-offs in chair geometry and structure had to be made to meet this goal. This led to an increase in the complexity of the structure and the elimination of some of the patents inherent strengths, but secured cab compatibility and kept in important comfort functions. The conclusion was that the pilot study and the patents were considered possible to put into practice, but in a less effective and optimal way compared to what was originally thought to be possible. Removing or reducing the demand on cab compatibility, the concept was still deemed to be able to reach its full potential with additional development.

Abstract:
The governing purpose of the thesis is to develop a chair concept based on a tilting mechanism called VAPAC. This chair concept has many potential ergonomic and environmental benefits that should be included and developed in the design. The report starts with an analysis of different segments within the chair market. Based on an evaluation, office chairs was chosen as the segment for the VAPA-Chair. Due to an interesting tilting idea suggested by the Supervisor/Concept originator, a test rig was built in order to try out a chair concept using straps for the tilting mechanism. This assignment was not originally one of the main tasks in the problem definition of this thesis . Due to curiosity and expectations for the idea, it was chosen to include this assignment in the thesis. A user survey reviled that this tilting idea offered an exciting and comfortable sitting experience. The concept using straps as tilting stringers was therefore developed further and important lengths and angles regarding the tilting mechanisms were settled. A problem occurred due to the risk of the chair tilting completely around if the user leans too much forwards or backwards in the chair. Making the stringers stiff so that they can withstand pressure when introduced to a load solved this problem. The tilting function was still the same as with the regular straps because the stringers were attached in joints, allowing the stiff straps to rotate freely. An Idea using turnbuckles as stringer was developed. This solution ensured the required stiffness as well as possibilities for height adjustment and a stop mechanism for the tilting. The terms “Ergonomic” and “Environmental friendly” is introduced, and important elements from these was set as requirements for the chair concept. Design sketches, doodling and brainstorming generated ideas for different concepts. Different functional concepts was introduced and evaluated as sub-parts of the chair. One concept was chosen for each part resulting in a holistic concept for the chair. The preliminary work results in a final concept, which is presented in the form of hand sketches and a 3D model using the program NX 7.5 Mechatronics . A lot of time was spent on modeling a simple and functional design with ergonomic and environmental friendly solutions.A material analysis was conducted regarding the bearing structure of the chair using the Life cycle analysis tool Eco-indicator 99. The analysis compared aluminum and steel. Due to low environmental impact using recycled aluminum, this material was chosen for the VAPA-Chair. A life cycle analysis was also conducted on the chair using the program CES Edupack. The analysis showed that the part of the chair’s lifecycle that impacts the environment the most, is the production of materials. Based on these results, it is recommended that the VAPA-Chair should focus on weight optimization of the chair and use as much recycled aluminum as possible in the production. Based on results from the report, a list of recommendations for further work is presented.

Abstract:

Résumé anglais : The metropolitan see has 2 meanings: all the dioceses suffragan of the metropolitan and the bishopric belonging to. Because of the geographical position and his size the Russian metropolitan see profits of a particular status. Diocese of Russia became autocephalous in fact in 1448, and saw his boundaries reduced to the muscovite state and the zones recognizing his authority. Politic of instauration of the metropolitan cult, which deserves the rising of the muscovite principality, continues and takes a new dimension. Relations between Church and the muscovite princes being a much studied subject, priority here is given to the internal organization of the see (about the clauses of accession to the prelacy and the organization of the dioceses) to the temporal (exclusively to landed property, because sources are deficiency to the study about the movable estate). Full text
Abstract:
About five years after British Occupation of Hong Kong in 1842, the foundation stone of St. John’s Cathedral was laid by Sir John Davis, the first Hong Kong Governor, on 11th March 1847. Being the second oldest building built in the colonial era of Hong Kong, although St. John’s Cathedral is not the official church in Hong Kong, it is the sovereign’s church. The Cathedral, together with the City Hall and the then Supreme Court building (i.e. the current LEGCO building) symbolised the 3 pillars of British sovereignty, namely: Religion, Administration/Military and Judiciary. Over the past hundred and sixty years, St. John’s Cathedral has grown with the Hong Kong society. Some of its growth has been reflected on the church building and the development of the St. John’s Cathedral compound. Yet, books on it were few on St. John’s Cathedral. Moreover, like general studies on church architecture, those books mainly focus on the buildings, and the interior furnishing, which is also an important component part of the church architecture has been overlooked. Among different church furnishing, the Bishop’s Throne is perhaps one of the most important pieces of interior furniture for a cathedral. From a Christian perspective, one might argue that the altar is far more important than the Bishop’s Throne as it is the centre of activities during worship. For example in Eucharist, the Christian celebration of the Last Supper, which is seen as a memorial of Christ’s sacrifice, a priest or minister celebrates at the altar, on which the bread and the wine which represents the body and blood of Christ are placed; also the area around the altar is seen as endowed with greater holiness. This is certainly very true, however, from the conservation perspective, the Bishop’s Throne deserves the same level of attention as the altar does. In fact, the name of “Cathedral” comes from the word “Cathedra” which is Bishop’s Throne in Greek, and a Cathedral is a church into which a Bishop’s official cathedra is installed. The dissertation aims at understanding the construction, placement, and symbolism of the Bishop’s Throne in Hong Kong. It will focus on the current and original Bishop’s Thrones in Hong Kong’s St. John’s Cathedral. The purpose is to research and document the construction, placement, design, and symbolism of the two Bishop’s Thrones in there. I hope that this dissertation will serve as a basis for future conservation of the Bishop’s Thrones in the way that it can minimize potential negative impact on the Bishop’s Thrones’ authenticity by any future conservation work i

Lee, Hyun. "Reliability evaluation of the BIFMA Chair Measurement Device." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/44963.

Full text
Abstract:

In the last decade, most offices have been equipped with computers, and most office workers spend much of their time sitting in chairs. And recently, as many office workers complain of back pains, the importance ofproper sitting and of chair designs that provide comfortable and suitable sitting posture has become recognized widely.

One organization involved in the design of chairs is the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) and its ANSIIHFES 100 committee. This committee has established the ANS/IHFES 100 standard for various types of furniture used at computer workstations, including chairs, desks, and tables. This committee also has designed the Chair Measurement Device (CMD) for specific assessments of seat height, seat depth, seat width, backrest height, backrest width, lumbar support, seat to back included angle, seat pan angle, armrest height, and armrest clearance, for the purpose of developing chairs in connection with other related furniture, such as computer desks. The CMD has been developed through the Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturer's Association (BIFMA).

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reliability of the CMD, for future use in evaluating chair design. Eight participants made specific measurements of three chairs over three measurement sessions. Six measurements were taken from each chair: lumbar support height, seat height, seat depth, backrest height, seat pan angle, and seat to back included angle. This experiment produced 2,160 data points, and standard deviation and confidence interval analysis was used to evaluate the inter-evaluator reliability (ie., consistency across the different evaluators) and the intra-evaluator reliability (i.e., consistency within an evaluator).

All standard deviations and 99% confidence intervals of the measurements were very small, implying that the measurements using the CMD were reliable across the evaluators, as well as within evaluators. The results also show that the procedure established for measurements was adequate for ANSIIHFES 100 compliance evaluations.

Exquisite is defined as carefully selected or sought out. I believe myself to be a selected soul placed in a body of circumstance. My work is self-explorative and telling of those circumstances in hopes of evoking empathy. Our bodies function and exist on many different levels. What I understand as normal for most differs vastly from what is normal for me. I aim to offer my perspective on the world, establish understanding, and blur the lines of normalcy.

Abstract:

Mathews, Gina Marie. "The Licensing, Preparation, and Role of High School Department Chairs." ScholarWorks, 2016. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/2161.

Abstract:
Limited existing research indicates that high school department chairs may not be prepared to fulfill their duties because of varying role descriptions and training. This qualitative comparative layered case study examined the alignment of high school department chairs' contextual intelligence in an eastern seaboard region of the United States from 3 perspectives: (a) school districts' role descriptions, (b) local universities' leadership courses, and (c) a state's education department's licensure requirements. Sternberg's contextual intelligence, the learned skill of decision-making based on past experiences, present settings, and future ideals, conceptually framed this study. The primary research question explored the extent to which conceptual similarities existed amongst those perspectives. Purposeful, chain, and stratified sampling techniques were used. Institutions' public email addresses were used to request participation from 10 education professors, 21 high school department chairs, and 41 school departments. Three education professors and 4 department chairs participated in semistructured interviews. The education department's website and 6 school districts provided artifact data. Inductive and deductive content analysis strategies were used to identify, compare, and triangulate themes. Findings suggest that state department's licensure requirements for supervisor/director align with local universities' leadership courses but may not align with local school districts' department chair role descriptions. Thus, participating school districts may need to revisit role descriptions. These findings may promote positive social change by influencing school districts, universities, and a state's education department to continue to recognize and develop high school department chairs' contextual intelligence.
